Exciton effects are studied in single-wall boron-nitride nanotubes. The Coulomb interaction dependence of the band gap, the optical gap, and the binding energy of excitons are discussed. The optical gap of the (5,0) nanotube is about 6eV at the onsite interaction U=2t with the hopping integral t=1.1eV. The binding energy of the exciton is 0.50eV for these parameters. This energy agrees well with that of other theoretical investigations. We find that the energy gap and the binding energy are almost independent of the geometries of nanotubes. This novel property is in contrast with that of the carbon nanotubes which show metallic and semiconducting properties depending on the chiralities.
Exciton effects are studied in single-wall boron-nitride (BN) nanotubes. Linear absorption spectra are calculated with changing the chiral index of the zigzag nanotubes. We consider the extended Hubbard model with atomic energies at the boron and nitrogen sites. Exciton effects are calculated using the configuration interaction technique. The Coulomb interaction dependence of the band gap, the lowest exciton energy, and the binding energy of the exciton are discussed. The optical gap of the (5,0) nanotube is about 6 eV at the onsite interaction U=2t with the hopping integral t=1.2 eV. The bind…
We represent the results of quantum chemical calculations of boron nitride nanotubes intercalated by alkali and alkali-earth metall atoms and its ions. It was obtained that unpair spins were localized on seperated metal atoms. So we propose to construct the two-qubit cells on the basis of infilled boron nitride nanotubes for the quantum computer.
We investigate the symmetry of the boron buckyball and a related boron nanotube. Using large-scale ab-initio calculations up to second-order Møller Plesset perturbation theory, we have determined unambiguously the equilibrium geometry/symmetry of two structurally related boron clusters: the B80 fullerene and the finite-length (5,0) boron nanotube. The B80 cluster was found to have the same symmetry, Ih, as the C60 molecule since its 20 additional boron atoms are located exactly at the centers of the 20 hexagons. Additionally, we also show that the (5,0) boron nanotube does not suffer from atom…
We present a new class of boron sheets, composed of triangular and hexagonal motifs, that are more stable than structures considered to date and thus are likely to be the precursors of boron nanotubes. We describe a simple and clear picture of electronic bonding in boron sheets and highlight the importance of three-center bonding and its competition with two-center bonding, which can also explain the stability of recently discovered boron fullerenes. Our findings call for reconsideration of the literature on boron sheets, nanotubes, and clusters.
The configurations, stability and electronic structures of a new class of boron sheet and related boron nanotubes are predicted within the framework of density functional theory. This boron sheet is sparser than those of recent proposals. Our theoretic results show that the stable boron sheet remains flat and is metallic. There are bands similar to the p-bands in graphite near the Fermi level. Stable nanotubes with various diameters and chiral vectors can be rolled from the sheet. Within our study, only the thin (8, 0) nanotube with a band gap of 0.44 eV is semiconducting, while all the other …
In this paper we report a theoretical study of the effects of the presence of boron in growing carbon nanotubes. We employ a well established Tight Binding model to describe the interactions responsible for the energetics of these systems, combined with the Molecular Dynamics simulation technique and Structural Relaxation calculations. We find, in agreement with the previous theoretical/experimental work of Blase {\em et al.} [{\em Phys. Rev. Lett.} {\bf 83}, 5078 (1999)], that boron favors (n,0) (zig-zag) tubular structures over (n,n) (arm-chair) ones by stabilizing the zig-zag edge. Furtherm…
High pressure Raman experiments on Boron Nitride multi-walled nanotubes show that the intensity of the vibrational mode at ~ 1367 cm-1 vanishes at ~ 12 GPa and it does not recover under decompression. In comparison, the high pressure Raman experiments on hexagonal Boron Nitride show a clear signature of a phase transition from hexagonal to wurtzite at ~ 13 GPa which is reversible on decompression. These results are contrasted with the pressure behavior of carbon nanotubes and graphite.
The current rechargeable battery technologies have a failure in their performance at high pressure and temperature. In this article, we have brought theoretical insights on using boron nitride flakes as a protecting layer for a lithium-ion battery device and extended its application for a spin-dependent photon emission device. Hence, the electronic properties of pristine and lithium-doped hydrogen-edged boron nitride flakes have been studied by the first principle density functional theory calculations. In this study, we have discussed the stability, adsorption energies, bond lengths, electron…
In an attempt to understand why catalytic methods for the growth of boron nitride nanotubes work much worse than for their carbon counterparts, we use first-principles calculations to study the energetics of elemental reactions forming N2, B2 and BN molecules on an iron catalyst. We observe that in the case of these small molecules, the catalytic activity is hindered by the formation of B2 on the iron surface. We also observe that the local morphology of a step edge present in our nanoparticle model stabilizes the boron nitride molecule with respect to B2 due to the ability of the step edge to…
Cathodoluminescence imaging and spectroscopy experiments on a single bamboo-like boron nitride nanotube are reported. Imaging experiments show that the luminescence is located all along the nanotube. Spectroscopy experiments point out the important role of dimensionality in this one dimensional object.
Based on a numerical ab initio study, we discuss a structure model for a broad boron sheet, which is the analog of a single graphite sheet, and the precursor of boron nanotubes. The sheet has linear chains of sp hybridized sigma bonds lying only along its armchair direction, a high stiffness, and anisotropic bonds properties. The puckering of the sheet is explained as a mechanism to stabilize the sp sigma bonds. The anisotropic bond properties of the boron sheet lead to a two-dimensional reference lattice structure, which is rectangular rather than triangular. As a consequence the chiral angle…
The recent discovery of pure boron nanotubes raises questions about their detailed atomic structure. Previous simulations predicted tubular structures with smooth or puckered surfaces. Here, we present some novel results based on ab initio simulations of bundled single-wall zigzag boron nanotubes (ropes). Besides the known smooth and puckered modifications, we found new forms that are radially constricted, and which seem to be energetically superior to the known isomers. Furthermore, those structures might be interpreted as intermediate states between ideal tubular phases and the known bulk ph…
Ab initio density-functional theory study suggests that pillared Li-dispersed boron carbide nanotubes is capable of storing hydrogen with a mass density higher than 6.0 weight% and a volumetric density higher than 45 g/L. The boron substitution in carbon nanotube greatly enhances the binding energy of Li atom to the nanotube, and this binding energy (~ 2.7 eV) is greater than the cohesive energy of lithium metal (~1.7 eV), preventing lithium from aggregation (or segregation) at high lithium doping concentration. The adsorption energy of hydrogen on the Li-dispersed boron carbide nanotube is in…
A new interlayer force-field for layered hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) based structures is presented. The force-field contains three terms representing the interlayer attraction due to dispersive interactions, repulsion due to anisotropic overlaps of electron clouds, and monopolar electrostatic interactions. With appropriate parameterization, the potential is able to simultaneously capture well the binding and lateral sliding energies of planar h-BN based dimer systems as well as the interlayer telescoping and rotation of double walled boron-nitride nanotubes of different crystallographic ori…
We report on the measurement of the effective radial modulus of multiwalled Boron Nitride nanotubes with external radii in the range 3.7 to 36 nm and number of layers in between 5 and 48. These Boron Nitride nanotubes are radially much stiffer than previously reported thinner and smaller Boron Nitride nanotubes. Here, we show the key role of the morphology of the nanotubes in determining their radial rigidity, in particular we find that the external and internal radii, R_ext and R_int, have a stronger influence on the radial modulus than the NT's thickness, t. We find that the effective radial…
Imaging and spectroscopy performed in a low-voltage scanning transmission electron microscope (LV-STEM) are used to characterize the structure and chemical properties of boron-terminated tetravacancies in hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). We confirm earlier theoretical predictions about the structure of these defects and identify new features in the electron energy-loss spectra (EELS) of B atoms using high resolution chemical maps, highlighting differences between these areas and pristine sample regions. We correlate our experimental data with calculations which help explain our observations.
We investigate the field emission properties of nitrogenated and boronated carbon nanotubes using time-dependent density functional theory, were the wave function propagation is performed using the Crank-Nicholson algorithm. We extract the current-voltage characteristics of the emitted electrons from nanotubes with different doping configurations. We found that boron doping either impedes, or slightly enhances, field emission. Nitrogen strongly influences the emission current, and the current is sensitive to the location of the nitrogen dopant in the nanotube. The emitted charge cloud from nit…
The effect of doping of cubic boron nitride with beryllium, silicon, sulfur and magnesium on the lattice parameters, electrical conductivity and EPR spectra has been studied. It is established that the degree of doping increases significantly in the case of crystallization of cubic boron nitride from BN solutions in supercritical ammonia at 3.9-4.2 GPa and 1100°C in comparison with the conventional synthesis from melts of the Mg-B-N system at 4.2 GPa and 1400°C. Doping with silicon and beryllium results in semiconductor properties of cubic boron nitride.
A comparison between experimental and theoretical electron Energy Loss Near Edge Structure (ELNES) of B and N K-edges in cubic boron nitride is presented. The electron energy loss spectra of cubic boron nitride particles were measured using a scanning transmission electron microscope. The theoretical calculation of the ELNES was performed within the framework of density functional theory including single particle core-hole effects. It is found that experimental and calculated ELNES of both the B and N K-edges in cubic boron nitride show excellent agreement.
Ab initio calculations of the spontaneous polarization and piezoelectric properties of boron nitride nanotubes show that they are excellent piezoelectric systems with response values larger than those of piezoelectric polymers. The intrinsic chiral symmetry of the nanotubes induces an exact cancellation of the total spontaneous polarization in ideal, isolated nanotubes of arbitrary indices. Breaking of this symmetry by inter-tube interaction or elastic deformations induces spontaneous polarization comparable to those of wurtzite semiconductors.
Recently hybridized monolayers consisting of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) phases inside graphene layer have been synthesized and shown to be an effective way of opening band gap in graphene monolayers [1]. In this letter, we report an ab initio density functional theory (DFT)- based study of h-BN domain size effect on the elastic properties of graphene/boron nitride hybrid monolayers (h-BNC). We found both inplane stiffness and longitudinal sound velocity of h-BNC linearly decrease with h-BN concentration.
Graphene nanoribbons are prepared inside boron nitride nanotubes by liquid phase encapsulation and subsequent annealing of 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene. The product is imaged with high resolution transmission electron microscopy, and characterized by optical absorption and Raman spectroscopy. Carbon-containing material is detected inside the boron nitride nanotubes with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The observed structures twist under the electron beam and the characteristic features of nanoribbons appear in the Raman spectra.
Boron-doped multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were synthesized using a methanol solution of boric acid as a source material. Accurate measurements of the electrical resistivity of an individual boron-doped MWNT was performed with a four-point contact, which was fabricated using an electron beam lithography technique. The doped boron provides conduction carriers, which reduces the resistivity of the MWNT.
We have studied zig-zag boron nitride (BN) nanotubes doped with the Ni hexagonal-closepacked nanowire. The doped BN nanotubes are ferromagnetic metals with substantial magnetism. Some special magnetic properties resulting from the interaction between the Ni nanowire and BN nanotubes are found. The Ni doped BN(9,0) nanotube shows semi-half-metallic behavior, which could become half-metallic after doping electrons more than 1.4 e/unit cell. The intrinsic halfmetallic behavior could be achieved by two dierent ways: one is coating the Ni nanowire with a smaller BN nanotube, i.e., BN(8,0), the othe…
Nanostructure and mechanical properties of bulk nanocristalline cubic boron nitride have been studied by transmission electron microscopy, and micro- and nanoindentation. The obtained data on hardness, elastic properties and fracture toughness clearly indicate that nano-cBN belongs to a family of advanced ultra-hard materials.
In this work we introduce the use of TiN/Ti2 N layers as a back contact for lifted-off membranes of anodic Ta3N5 nanotube layers. In photoelectrochemical H2 generation experiments under simulated AM 1.5G light, shift of the onset potential for anodic photocurrents to lower potentials is observed, as well as a higher magnitude of the photocurrents compared to conventional Ta3N5 nanotubes (~ 0.5 V RHE ). We ascribe this beneficial effect to the improved conductive properties of the TiNx -based back contact layer that enables a facilitated electron-transport for tantalum-nitride based materials t…
Monolayer of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), commonly known as "white graphene" is a promising wide bandgap semiconducting material for deep-ultaviolet optoelectronic devices. In this report, the light absorption of a single layer hexagonal boron nitride is calculated using a tight-binding Hamiltonian. The absorption is found to be monotonically decreasing function of photon energy compared to graphene where absorption coefficient is independent of photon energy and characterized by the effective fine-structure constant.
We present {\it ab initio} and self-consistent tight-binding calculations on the band structure of single wall semiconducting carbon nanotubes with high degrees (up to 25 %) of boron substitution. Besides a lowering of the Fermi energy into the valence band, a regular, periodic distribution of the p-dopants leads to the formation of a dispersive ``acceptor''-like band in the band gap of the undoped tube. This comes from the superposition of acceptor levels at the boron atoms with the delocalized carbon $π$-orbitals. Irregular (random) boron-doping leads to a high concentration of hybrids of ac…
Bilayer graphene nanoribbon with zigzag edge is investigated with the tight binding model. Two stacking structures, alpha and beta, are considered. The band splitting is seen in the alpha structure, while the splitting in the wave number direction is found in the beta structure. The local density of states in the beta structure tend to avoid sites where interlayer hopping interactions are present. The calculation is extended to the boron-carbon-nitride systems. The qualitative properties persist when zigzag edge atoms are replaced with borons and nitrogens.
An ab initio calculations have been carried out for examining the curvature effect of small diameter hexagonal boron nanotubes. The considered conformations of boron nanotubes are namely armchair (3,3), zigzag (5,0) and chiral (4,2), and consist of 12, 20, and 56 atoms, respectively. The strain energy is evaluated in order to examine the curvature effect. It is found that the strain energy of hexagonal BNT strongly depends upon the radius, whereas the strain energy of triangular BNTs depends on both radius and chirality.
There is a strong interest to attach nanoparticles non-covalently to one-dimensional systems like boron nitride nanotubes to form composites. The combination of those materials might be used for catalysis, in solar cells, or for water splitting. Additionally, the fundamental aspect of charge transfer between the components can be studied in such systems. We report on the synthesis and characterization of nanocomposites based on semiconductor nanoparticles attached directly and non-covalently to boron nitride nanotubes. Boron nitride nanotubes were simply integrated into the colloidal synthesis…
Two dimensional van der Waals crystals and their heterostructures provide an exciting alternative to bulk wide bandgap semiconductors as hosts of single photon emitters. Amongst different layered materials, bright and robust defect-based single photon emitters have been observed within hexagonal boron nitride, a layered wide-bandgap semiconductor. Despite research efforts to date, the identities of the deep defects responsible for quantum emissions in hexagonal boron nitride remain unknown. In this theoretical work, I demonstrate that the strain-induced changes in emission frequencies depend o…
Using the minima hopping global geometry optimization method on the density functional potential energy surface we study medium size and large boron clusters. Even though for isolated medium size clusters the ground state is a cage like structure they are unstable against external perturbations such as contact with other clusters. The energy landscape of larger boron clusters is glass like and has a large number of structures which are lower in energy than the cages. This is in contrast to carbon and boron nitride systems which can be clearly identified as structure seekers in our minima hoppi…
Despite a recent flurry of experimental and simulation studies, an accurate estimate of the interaction strength of water molecules with hexagonal boron nitride is lacking. Here we report quantum Monte Carlo results for the adsorption of a water monomer on a periodic hexagonal boron nitride sheet, which yield a water monomer interaction energy of -84 +/- 5 meV. We use the results to evaluate the performance of several widely used density functional theory (DFT) exchange correlation functionals, and find that they all deviate substantially. Differences in interaction energies between different …
The influence of triaxial in-plane strain on the electronic properties of a hexagonal boron-nitride sheet is investigated using density functional theory. Different from graphene, the triaxial strain localizes the molecular orbitals of the boron-nitride flake in its center depending on the direction of the applied strain. The proposed technique for localizing the molecular orbitals that are close to the Fermi level in the center of boron nitride flakes can be used to actualize engineered nanosensors, for instance, to selectively detect gas molecules. We show that the central part of the strain…
Uniaxial tensile properties of hexagonal boron nitride nanoribbons and dependence of these properties on temperature, strain rate, and the inclusion of vacancy defects have been explored with molecular dynamics simulations using Tersoff potential. The ultimate tensile strength of pristine hexagonal boron nitride nanoribbon of 26 nm x 5 nm with armchair chirality is found to be 100.5 GPa. The ultimate tensile strength and strain have been found decreasing with increasing the temperature while an opposite trend has been observed for increasing the strain rate. Furthermore, the vacancy defects re…
Using combination of Density Functional Theory and Monte Carlo simulation, we study the phase stability and electronic properties of two dimensional hexagonal composites of boron nitride and graphene, with a goal to uncover the role of the interface geometry formed between the two. Our study highlights that preferential creation of extended armchair interfaces may facilitate formation of solid solution of boron nitride and graphene within a certain temperature range. We further find that for band-gap engineering, armchair interfaces or patchy interfaces with mixed geometry are most suitable. E…
We study silicene on hexagonal boron nitride, using first principles calculations. Since hexagonal boron nitride is semiconducting, the interaction with silicene is weaker than for metallic substrates. It therefore is possible to open a 50 meV band gap in the silicene. We further address the effect of Mn decoration by determining the onsite Hubbard interaction parameter, which turns out to differ significantly for decoration at the top and hollow sites. The induced magnetism in the system is analyzed in detail.
The defect-mediated hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) supercell display the visible optical spectra and electronic characteristics. The defects in the hBN supercell include the atomic vacancy, antisite, antisite vacancy, and substitution of a foreign atom for boron or nitrogen. The hBN supercell with VB, CB, and NB-VN has the high electron density of states across the Fermi level which indicates the high conductive electronic characteristics. The hBN with defects including atomic vacancy, antisite vacancy, and substitution of a foreign atom for boron or nitride exhibit the distinct spin-resolved o…
Many quantum emitters have been measured close or near the grain boundaries of the two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride where various Stone-Wales defects appear. We show by means of first principles density functional theory calculations that the pentagon-heptagon Stone-Wales defect is an ultraviolet emitter and its optical properties closely follow the characteristics of a 4.08-eV quantum emitter often observed in polycrystalline hexagonal boron nitride. We also show that the square-octagon Stone-Wales line defects are optically active in the ultraviolet region with varying gaps depending …
The growth of nanotube films on various substrates and surfaces is vital for applications in nanoscale functional devices. We report a simple and versatile boron (B) ink painting method that enables high-density boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) films with any desired pattern to be grown on, and firmly attached to, different surfaces. In the method, special B ink is first painted, sprayed or inkjet printed at desired location with required pattern, and then the ink layer is annealed in a nitrogen-containing atmosphere to form BNNT film. The B ink is a liquid mixture of ball-milled B particles, met…
We report all-electron, density-functional calculations with large Gaussian polarization basis set of the recently synthesized octahedral B24N24 cage that is perfectly round by symmetry, and boron-nitride (BN) clusters that its existence might suggest. We consider whether it is energetically possible that the two halves of this round cage could cap the BN nanotubes, modeled by B28N28 and B32N32. The energetics show that BN nanotubes with such round caps, are only slightly less favorable than the BN clusters containing six squares as the only defects in the otherwise perfect hexagonal lattice. …
In the present work we discuss based on extensive fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations the dynamics of Neon atoms oscillating inside (5,5)single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and boron-nitride (BNNT) ones. Our results show that sustained high frequency oscillatory regimes are possible for a large range of temperatures. Our results also show that the general features of the oscillations are quite similar to CNT and BNNT, in contrast with some speculations in previous work literature about the importance of broken symmetry and chirality exhibited by BNNTs.
The phonon dispersion, density of states, Grüneisen parameters, and the lattice thermal conductivity of single- and multi-layered boron nitride were calculated using first-principles methods. For the bulk {\it h}-BN we also report the two-phonon density of states. We also present simple analytical solutions to the acoustic vibrational mode-dependent lattice thermal conductivity. Moreover, computations based on the elaborate Callaway-Klemens and the real space super cell methods are presented to calculate the sample length and temperature dependent lattice thermal conductivity of single- and mu…
We report first-principles calculations of the effects of quasiparticle self-energy and electron-hole interaction on the optical properties of single-walled BN nanotubes. Excitonic effects are shown to be even more important in BN nanotubes than in carbon nanotubes. Electron-hole interactions give rise to complexes of bright (and dark) excitons, which qualitatively alter the optical response. Excitons with binding energy larger than 2 eV are found in the (8,0) BN nanotubes. Moreover, unlike the carbon nanotubes, theory predicts that these exciton states are comprised of coherent supposition of…
Spectro-ptychography offers improved spatial resolution and additional phase spectral information relative to that provided by scanning transmission X-ray microscopes (STXM). However, carrying out ptychography at the lower range of soft X-ray energies (e.g., below 200 eV to 600 eV) on samples with weakly scattering signals can be challenging. We present soft X-ray ptychography results at energies as low as 180 eV and illustrate the capabilities with results from permalloy nanorods (Fe 2p), carbon nanotubes (C 1s), and boron nitride bamboo nanostructures (B 1s, N1s). We describe optimization of…
The effects of edge hydrogenation and hydroxylation on the relative stability and electronic properties of hexagonal boron nitride quantum dots (h-BNQDs) are investigated. Zigzag edge hydroxylation is found to result in considerable energetic stabilization of h-BNQDs as well as a reduction of their electronic gap with respect to their hydrogenated counterparts. The application of an external in-plane electric field leads to a monotonous decrease of the gap. When compared to their edge-hydrogenated counterparts, significantly lower field intensities are required to achieve full gap closure of t…
We have carried out first-principles calculations on electronic properties of graphene quantum dots embedded in hexagonal boron nitride monolayer sheets. The calculations with density functional theory show that the band gaps of quantum dots are determined by the quantum confinement effects and the hybridization of π orbitals from B, N and C atoms. The energy states near the Fermi level are found to be strongly localized within and in the vicinity of the quantum dots.
The sputtering of hexagonal boron nitride due to low energy xenon ion bombardments occurs in various applications including fabrication of cubic boron nitride and erosion of Hall thruster channel walls. At low ion energies, accurate experimental characterization of sputter yields increases in difficulty due to the low yields involved. A molecular dynamics model is employed to simulate the sputtering process and to calculate sputter yields for ion energies ranging from 10 eV to 350 eV. The results are compared to experimental data and a semi-empirical expression developed by Bohdansky is found …
Novel materials with tunable magnetic states play a significant role in the development of next-generation spintronic devices. In this paper, we examine the role of biaxial strain on the electronic properties of vacancy-decorated hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) monolayers using density functional theory calculations. We found that the strain can lead to switching of the magnetic state for h-BN monolayers with boron vacancy or divacancy. Our findings promise a new route for the operation of low-dimensional spintronic devices.
Nanotubular materials inspired by crystalline diborides such as AlB_2 are proposed. The atomic structure, in particular the basic chemical question of where to put Al atoms in order to stabilize nanotubular Al-B systems, is investigated using density-functional calculations for prototype systems. The optimized tubular prototypes are found to be competitive in energy with their bulk crystalline counterparts. All of the tubular Al-B systems investigated are calculated to be metallic.
The dispersion of nitride and carbide ceramic particles in water is difficult, due to the absence of hydroxyl groups on their surface. Boron nitride is not an exception and despite its numerous applications, no effective dispersant has been identified so far. We demonstrate here the dispersion properties of two cellulose derivatives for hexagonal boron nitride powders, hydroxyl ethyl cellulose and methyl cellulose. The effect of particle sizes and cellulose concentration was investigated. The adsorption of cellulose onto the surface of the BN particles was confirmed by isotherm adsorption. Zet…
In this work we show, by means of a density functional theory formalism, that the simple physical contact between hydrogen terminated boron nitride surfaces gives rise to a metallic interface with free carries of opposite sign at each surface. A band gap can be induced by applying uniaxial pressure. The size of the band gap changes continuously from zero up to 4.4 eV with increasing pressure, which is understood in terms of the interaction between surface states. Due to the high thermal conductivity of cubic boron nitride and the coupling between band gap and applied pressure, such tunable ban…
Single- and multi-walled molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) nanotubes have been coaxially grown on small diameter boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) which were synthesized from heteronanotubes by removing single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), and systematically investigated by optical spectroscopy. The strong photoluminescence (PL) from single-walled MoS$_2$ nanotubes supported by core BNNTs is observed in this work, which evidences a direct band gap structure for single-walled MoS$_2$ nanotubes with around 6 - 7 nm in diameter. The observation is consistent with our DFT results that the single-wa…
Covalent functionalization is a way to tune the electrochemical properties of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) monolayers. The wide band gap insulator h-BN may become metallic conductor upon functionalization with strong oxidants, such as fluorosulfonyl radicals ($\cdot$OSO$_2$F), as known since 1978 [N. Bartlett et al., J. Chem. Soc. Chem. Comm. {\bf 5}, 200 (1978)], with electrical conductivity of 1.5 S/cm [C. Shen et al., J. Solid State Chem. {\bf 147}, 74 (1999)] that greatly surpasses commercial cathode material Li$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ while retaining excellent ionic conductivity. Functionalized …
Topological insulators hold great potential for efficient information processing and storage. Using density functional theory calculations, we predict that a honeycomb lead monolayer can be stabilized on the Al2O3 (0001) substrate and becomes topologically non-trivial with a sizeable band gap (~0.27 eV). Furthermore, we propose to use hexagonal boron-nitride (h-BN) monolayer as a protection for the topological states of Pb/Al2O3 and Sn/Al2O3. Our findings suggest new possibilities for designing and protecting two-dimensional TIs for practical applications.
Carbon nanoscrolls (CNSs) are structures formed by rolling up graphene layers into a papyruslike shape. CNNs have been experimentally produced by different groups. Boron nitride nanoscrolls (BNNSs) are similar structures using boron nitride instead of graphene layers. In this work we report molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics results for the structural and dynamical aspects of BNNS formation. Similarly to CNS, BNNS formation is dominated by two major energy contributions, the increase in the elastic energy and the energetic gain due to van der Waals interactions of the overlapping surfa…
We present an ab-initio study of boron nitride as well as carbon allotropes. Their relative thermodynamic stabilities and structural phase transitions from low- to high-density phases are investigated. Pressure-temperature phase diagrams are calculated and compared to experimental findings. The calculations are performed using quantum chemical wavefunction based as well as density functional theories. Our findings reveal that predicted energy differences often depend significantly on the choice of the employed method. Comparison between calculated and experimental results allows for benchmarki…
