When low-mass stars form, the collapsing cloud of gas and dust goes through several stages which are usually characterized by the shape of their spectral energy distributions. Such classification is based on the cloud morphology only and does not address the dynamical state of the object. In this paper we investigate the initial cloud collapse and subsequent disk formation through the dynamical behavior as reflected in the sub-millimeter spectral emission line profiles. If a young stellar object is to be characterized by its dynamical structure it is important to know how accurately information about the velocity field can be extracted and which observables provide the best description of the kinematics. Of particular interest is the transition from infalling envelope to rotating disk, because this provides the initial conditions for the protoplanetary disk, such as mass and size. We use a hydrodynamical model, describing the collapse of a core and formation of a disk, to produce synthetic observables which we compare to calculated line profiles of a simple parameterized model. Because we know the velocity field from the hydrodynamical simulation we can determine in a quantitative way how well our best-fit parameterized velocity field reproduces the original. We use a molecular line excitation and radiation transfer code to produce spectra of both our hydro dynamical simulation as well as our parameterized model. We find that information about the velocity field can reasonably well be derived by fitting a simple model to either single-dish lines or interferometric data, but preferentially by using a combination of the two. Our result shows that it is possible to establish relative ages of a sample of young stellar objects using this method, independently of the details of the hydrodynamical model.
We performed hydrodynamical simulations with and without radiative cooling of jet models with parameters representative for the symbiotic system MWC 560. For symbiotic systems we have to perform jet simulations of a pulsed underdense jet in a high density ambient medium. We present the jet structure resulting from our simulations and calculate emission plots which account for expected radiative processes. In addition, our calculations provide expansion velocities for the jet bow shock, the density and temperature structure in the jet, and the propagation and evolution of the jet pulses. In MWC…
The results from hydrodynamical TREESPH simulations of galaxy clusters are used to investigate the dependence of the final cluster X-ray properties upon the numerical resolution and the assumed star formation models for the cooled gas. When cold gas particles are allowed to convert into stars the final gas profiles show a well defined core radius and the temperature profiles are nearly flat. Final X-ray luminosities are found to be numerically stable, with uncertainties of a factor 2.
We have carried out a comparative analysis of the properties of dark matter halos in N-body and hydrodynamical simulations. We analyze their density profiles, shapes and kinematical properties with the aim of assessing the effects that hydrodynamical processes might produce on the evolution of the dark matter component. The simulations performed allow us to reproduce dark matter halos with high resolution, although the range of circular velocities is limited. We find that for halos with circular velocities of $[150-200] km s^{-1}$ at the virial radius, the presence of baryons affects the evolu…
We present synthetic line profiles as predicted by the models of 2-D line- driven disk winds due to Proga, Stone & Drew. We compare the model line profiles with HST observations of the cataclysmic variable IX Vel. The model wind consists of a slow outflow that is bounded on the polar side by a fast stream. We find that these two components of the wind produce distinct spectral features. The fast stream produces profiles which show features consistent with observations. These include the appearance of the P-Cygni shape for a range of inclinations, the location of the maximum depth of the absorp…
[Abridged] We have analysed the mass and velocity distributions of two samples of relaxed elliptical-like-objects (ELOs) identified, at z=0, in a set of self-consistent hydrodynamical simulations operating in the context of a concordance cosmological model. Our analysis shows that they are embedded in extended, massive dark matter haloes, and they also have an extended corona of hot diffuse gas. Dark matter haloes have experienced adiabatic contraction along their assembly process. The relative ELO dark- to bright-mass content and space distributions show broken homology, and they are consiste…
Results from a large set of hydrodynamical SPH simulations of galaxy clusters in a flat LCDM cosmology are used to investigate the metal enrichment and heating of the ICM. The physical modeling of the gas includes radiative cooling, star formation, energy feedback and metal enrichment that follow from the explosions of SNe of type II and Ia. The metallicity dependence of the cooling function is also taken into account. For a fiducial set of model prescriptions the results indicate radial iron profiles in broad agreement with observations; global iron abundances are also consistent with data. I…
(Abridged) In the first paper of this series, we presented hydrodynamical simulations with radiative cooling of jet models with parameters representative of the symbiotic system MWC 560. These were jet simulations of a pulsed, initially underdense jet in a high-density ambient medium. They were stopped when the jet reached a length of 50 AU. There, however, a transition of the initially underdense jet towards an overdense jet should occur, which should result in changed kinematics. Therefore, we describe two hydrodynamical simulations with cooling beyond this density balance, one with the same…
Results from hydrodynamical SPH simulations of galaxy clusters are used to investigate the dependence of the final cluster X-ray properties on the numerical resolution and the assumed models for the physical gas processes. Two different spatially flat cosmological models have been considered: a low-density cold dark matter universe with a vacuum energy density Omega_L=0.7 (LCDM) and a cold+hot dark matter model (CHDM). These simulations first include radiative cooling and then also conversion of cold gas particles into stars. When cold gas particles are allowed to convert into stars the final …
The computationally demanding nature of radiative-hydrodynamical simulations of stellar surface convection warrants an investigation of the sensitivity of the convective structure and spectral synthesis to the numerical resolution and dimension of the simulations, which is presented here. With too coarse a resolution the predicted spectral lines tend to be too narrow, reflecting insufficient Doppler broadening from the convective motions, while at the currently highest affordable resolution the line shapes have converged essentially perfectly to the observed profiles. Similar conclusions are d…
We present the results of realistic, 3D, hydrodynamical, simulations of surface convection in red giant stars with varying effective temperatures and metallicities. We use the convection simulations as time-dependent, hydrodynamical, model atmospheres to compute spectral line profiles for a number of ions and molecules under the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). We compare the results with the predictions of line formation calculations based on 1D, hydrostatic, model stellar atmospheres in order to estimate the impact of 3D models on the derivation of elemental abundances. W…
Modeling the structure of molecular clouds depends on good methods to statistically compare simulations with observations in order to constrain the models. Here we characterize a suite of hydrodynamical and magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations of supersonic turbulence using an averaged wavelet transform, the Delta-variance, that has been successfully used to characterize observations. We find that, independent of numerical resolution and dissipation, the only models that produce scale-free, power-law Delta-variance spectra are those with hypersonic Mach numbers above M ~ 4, while slower sup…
We investigate the X-ray and mass distribution in the merging galaxy cluster 1E 0657-56. We study head-on collisions of two virialized clusters with an NFW density profile in the $Λ$CDM universe using an N-body + hydrodynamical code. A clear off-set of an X-ray peak from a mass peak, which is like what is reported in Clow et al. (2004), is first reproduced in the N-body + hydrodynamical simulations. We estimate the ram pressure-stripping conditions of the substructure in mergers of two NFW dark halos using a simple analytical model. We find that the ram pressure dominates the gravity of the su…
Modern hydrodynamical simulations offer nowadays a powerful means to trace the evolution of the X-ray properties of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) during the cosmological history of the hierarchical build up of galaxy clusters. In this paper we review the current status of these simulations and how their predictions fare in reproducing the most recent X-ray observations of clusters. After briefly discussing the shortcomings of the self-similar model, based on assuming that gravity only drives the evolution of the ICM, we discuss how the processes of gas cooling and non-gravitational heating ar…
We present 3D hydrodynamical simulations of a precessing jet propagating inside a supernova remnant (SNR) shell, particularly applied to the W50-SS433 system in a search for the origin of its peculiar elongated morphology. Several runs were carried out with different values for the mass loss rate of the jet, the initial radius of the SNR, and the opening angle of the precession cone. We found that our models successfully reproduce the scale and morphology of W50 when the opening angle of the jets is set to 10$\degr$ or if this angle linearly varies with time. For these models, more realistic r…
Aims. This work presents a new hydrodynamical algorithm to study astrophysical detonations. A prime motivation of this development is the description of a carbon detonation in conditions relevant to superbursts, which are thought to result from the propagation of a detonation front around the surface of a neutron star in the carbon layer underlying the atmosphere. Methods. The algorithm we have developed is a finite-volume method inspired by the original MUSCL scheme of van Leer (1979). The algorithm is of second-order in the smooth part of the flow and avoids dimensional splitting. It is appl…
We study both analytically and numerically hydrodynamical effects of two colliding shells, the simplified models of the internal shock in various relativistic outflows such as gamma-ray bursts and blazars. We pay particular attention to three interesting cases: a pair of shells with the same rest mass density (``{\it equal rest mass density}''), a pair of shells with the same rest mass (``{\it equal mass}''), and a pair of shells with the same bulk kinetic energy (``{\it equal energy}'') measured in the intersteller medium (ISM) frame. We find that the density profiles are significantly affect…
We present hydrogen emission line profile models of magnetospheric accretion onto Classical T Tauri stars. The models are computed under the Sobolev approximation using the three-dimensional Monte Carlo radiative-transfer code TORUS. We have calculated four illustrative models in which the accretion flows are confined to azimuthal curtains - a geometry predicted by magneto-hydrodynamical simulations. Properties of the line profile variability of our models are discussed, with reference to dynamic spectra and cross-correlation images. We find that some gross characteristics of observed line pro…
We discuss Tree+SPH simulations of galaxy clusters and groups, aimed at studying the effect of cooling and non-gravitational heating on observable properties of the ICM. We simulate at high resolution four halos, with masses in the range (0.2-4)10^{14}M_sol. We discuss the effects of using different SPH implementations and show that high resolution is mandatory to correctly follow the cooling pattern of the ICM. All of our heating schemes which correctly reproduce the X-ray scaling properties of clusters and groups do not succeed in reducing the fraction of collapsed gas below a level of 20 (30…
We present results of a study on the evolution of the parameters characterizing the structure and dynamics of the relaxed elliptical-like objects (ELOs) identified at z=0, z=1 and z=1.5 in a set of hydrodynamical, self-consistent simulations operating in the context of a concordance cosmological model. The values of the stellar mass, the stellar half-mass radius and the stellar mean-square velocity have been measured in each ELO and found to populate, at any z, a flattened ellipsoid close to a plane (the dynamical plane, DP). Our simulations indicate that, at the intermediate zs considered, in…
We report on a study of the parameters characterizing the mass and velocity distributions of two samples of relaxed elliptical-like objects (ELOs) identified, at z=0, in a set of self-consistent hydrodynamical simulations operating in the context of a concordance cosmological model. Star formation (SF) has been phenomenologically implemented in the simulations in the framework of the turbulent sequential scenario through a threshold gas density and an efficiency parameter. Each ELO sample is characterized by the values these parameters take. We have found that the (logarithms of the) ELO stell…
Understanding the gas abundance distribution is essential when tracing star formation using molecular line observations. Changing density and temperature conditions cause gas to freeze-out onto dust grains, and this needs to be taken into account when modeling a collapsing molecular cloud. This study aims to provide a realistic estimate of the CO abundance distribution throughout the collapse of a molecular cloud. We provide abundance profiles and synthetic spectral lines which can be compared to observations. We use a 2D hydrodynamical simulation of a collapsing cloud and subsequent formation…
We present results on the X-ray properties of clusters and groups of galaxies, extracted from a large hydrodynamical simulation. We used the GADGET code to simulate a LambdaCDM model within a box of 192 Mpc/h on a side, with 480^3 dark matter particles and as many gas particles. The simulation includes radiative cooling, star formation and supernova feedback. The simulated M-T relation is consistent with observations once we mimic the procedure for mass estimates applied to real clusters. Also, with the adopted choices of Omega_m=0.3 and sigma_8=0.8 the resulting XTF agrees with observational …
We analyze the flux power spectrum and its covariance using simulated Lyman alpha forests. We find that pseudo-hydro techniques are good approximations of hydrodynamical simulations at high redshift. However, the pseudo-hydro techniques fail at low redshift because they are insufficient for characterizing some components of the low-redshift intergalactic medium, notably the warm-hot intergalactic medium. Hence, to use the low-redshift Lyman alpha flux power spectrum to constrain cosmology, one would need realistic hydrodynamical simulations. By comparing one-dimensional mass statistics with fl…
The Discrete Absorption Components (DACs) commonly observed in the ultraviolet lines of hot stars have previously been modelled by dynamical simulations of Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs) in their line-driven stellar winds. Here we apply the kinematic DAC inversion method of Brown et al. to the hydrodynamical CIR models and test the reliability of the results obtained. We conclude that the inversion method is able to recover valuable information on the velocity structure of the mean wind and to trace movement of velocity plateaux in the hydrodynamical data, though the recovered density p…
The current status of numerical simulations of galaxy formation is reviewed. After a short description of the main numerical simulation techniques, three sample applications illustrate how numerical simulations have provided deeper insight in the galaxy formation process and how they have illuminated success and failure of the hierarchical galaxy formation paradigm: N-body simulations demonstrate that the density profiles of dark matter halos that form in hierarchical clustering scenarios follow a characteristic law. A comparison with the kinematics of disk galaxies however unravels that these…
Two-dimensional (axially symmetric) numerical hydrodynamical calculations of accretion flows which cannot cool through emission of radiation are presented. The calculations begin from an equilibrium configuration consisting of a thick torus with constant specific angular momentum. Accretion is induced by the addition of a small anomalous azimuthal shear stress which is characterized by a function ν. We study the flows generated as the amplitude and form of νare varied. A spherical polar grid which spans more than two orders of magnitude in radius is used to resolve the flow over a wide range o…
We have performed a series of simulations of clusters of galaxies on the basis of the smoothed particle hydrodynamics technique in a spatially-flat cold dark matter universe with $Ω=0.3$, $λ=0.7$, and H_0=70 km/s/Mpc as one of the most successful representative cosmological scenarios. In particular, we focus on the Sunyaev--Zel'dovich effect in submm and mm bands, and estimate the reliability of the estimates of the global Hubble constant $H_0$ and the peculiar velocity of clusters $v_r$. Our simulations indicate that fractional uncertainties of the estimates of $H_0$ amount to $\sim 20%$ main…
We present a comparison between simulation results and X-ray observational data on the evolution of the metallicity of the intra-cluster medium (ICM). The simulations of galaxy clusters were performed with the Tree-SPH Gadget2 code that includes a detailed model of chemical evolution, by assuming three different shapes for the stellar initial mass function (IMF), namely the Salpeter (1955), Kroupa (2001) and Arimoto-Yoshii (1987) IMF. Our simulations predict significant radial gradients of the Iron abundance, which extend over the whole cluster virialized region. At larger radii, we do not det…
Numerical hydrodynamical simulations are used to predict the expected absorption properties of the Lyman-Alpha forest for a variety of Cold Dark Matter dominated cosmological scenarios: CHDM, OCDM, LCDM, SCDM, and tCDM. Synthetic spectra are constructed duplicating the resolution, signal-to-noise ratio, and wavelength coverage of several published high resolution spectra, and their statistical properties compared on the basis of the flux distribution of the spectra, the distribution of coefficients in a wavelet decomposition of the spectra, and the distributions of absorption line profile para…
We use a one dimensional hydrodynamical code to study the evolution of spherically symmetric perturbations in the framework of Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). The code evolves spherical gaseous shells in an expanding Universe by employing a MOND-type relationship between the fluctuations in the density field and the gravitational force, $g$. We focus on the evolution of initial density perturbations of the form $δ_{i}\sim r_{i}^{-s}$ for $0<s<3$. A shell is initially cold and remains so until it encounters the shock formed by the earlier collapse of shells nearer to the centre. During the …
We study the neutrino-driven wind from the proto-neutron star by the general relativistic hydrodynamical simulations. We examine the properties of the neutrino-driven wind to explore the possibility of the r-process nucleosynthesis. The numerical simulations with the neutrino heating and cooling processes are performed with the assumption of the constant neutrino luminosity by using realistic profiles of the proto-neutron star (PNS) as well as simplified models. The dependence on the mass of PNS and the neutrino luminosity is studied systematically. Comparisons with the analytic treatment in t…
In spite of a large number of global three-dimensional (3D) magneto-hydrodynamical (MHD) simulations of accretion flows and jets being made recently, their astrophysical relevance for realistic situations is not well known. In order to examine to what extent the simulated MHD flows can account for the observed spectral energy distribution (SED) of Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), for the first time we calculate the emergent spectra from 3D MHD flows in a wide range of wavelengths (from radio to X-ray) by solving the 3D radiative transfer equations. We use the simulation data by Kato, Mineshige, and Sh…
We perform simulations of relativistic binary stars in post-Newtonian gravity to investigate their dynamical stability prior to merger against gravitational collapse in a tidal field. In general, our equations are only strictly accurate to first post-Newtonian order, but they recover full general relativity for spherical, static stars. We study both corotational and irrotational binary configurations of identical stars in circular orbits. We adopt a soft, adiabatic equation of state with $Γ= 1.4$, for which the onset of instability occurs at a sufficiently small value of the compaction $M/R$ t…
