We present 3D hydrodynamical simulations of a precessing jet propagating inside a supernova remnant (SNR) shell, particularly applied to the W50-SS433 system in a search for the origin of its peculiar elongated morphology. Several runs were carried out with different values for the mass loss rate of the jet, the initial radius of the SNR, and the opening angle of the precession cone. We found that our models successfully reproduce the scale and morphology of W50 when the opening angle of the jets is set to 10$\degr$ or if this angle linearly varies with time. For these models, more realistic runs were made considering that the remnant is expanding into an interstellar medium (ISM) with an exponential density profile (as HI observations suggest). Taking into account all these ingredients, the large scale morphology of the W50-SS 433 system, including the asymmetry between the lobes (formed by the jet-SNR interaction), is well reproduced.
We present two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of both jet- and wind-driven models for protostellar outflows in order to make detailed comparisons to the kinematics of observed molecular outflows. Comparing the different simulations with observations, we find that some outflows, e.g., HH 212, show features consistent with the jet-driven model, while others, e.g., VLA 05487, are consistent with the wind-driven model.
We analyze the structural and dynamical properties of disk-like objects formed in fully consistent cosmological simulations with an inefficient star formation algorithm. Comparison with data of similar observable properties of spiral galaxies gives satisfactory agreement.
The results from hydrodynamical TREESPH simulations of galaxy clusters are used to investigate the dependence of the final cluster X-ray properties upon the numerical resolution and the assumed star formation models for the cooled gas. When cold gas particles are allowed to convert into stars the final gas profiles show a well defined core radius and the temperature profiles are nearly flat. Final X-ray luminosities are found to be numerically stable, with uncertainties of a factor 2.
Hydrodynamical SPH simulations of galaxy clusters are used to investigate the metal enrichment of the intracluster medium. The final metallicity abundances of the simulated clusters are determined according to the numerical resolution and a number of model parameters. For a fiducial set of model prescriptions the results of the simulations indicate iron abundances in broad agreement with data. Final X-ray properties are not sensitive to the heating of the ICM. This supports a scenario where the ICM evolution of cool clusters is driven by radiative cooling.
We present preliminary results on the effects of mergers on the chemical properties of galactic objects in hierarchical clustering scenarios. We adopt a hydrodynamical chemical code that allows to describe the coupled evolution of dark matter and baryons within a cosmological context. We found that disk-like and spheroid-like objects have distinctive metallicity patterns that may be the result of different evolution.
We present a new approach to doing Eulerian computational fluid dynamics that is designed to work at high Mach numbers encountered in hydrodynamical simulations of the IGM. In conventional Eulerian CFD, the thermal energy is poorly tracked in supersonic bulk flows where local fluid variables cannot be accurately separated from the much larger bulk flow components. We described a method in which local fluid quantities can be directly tracked and the Eulerian fluid equations solved in a local frame moving with the flow. The new algorithm has been used to run large hydrodynamical simulations on a…
We present a new Eulerian code able to follow the evolution of large-scale structures in the Universe in the weakly nonlinear regime. We compare test results with a N-body code and analytical results.
The excitation of internal gravity waves by an entropy bubble oscillating in an isothermal atmosphere is investigated using direct two-dimensional numerical simulations. The oscillation field is measured by a projection of the simulated velocity field onto the anelastic solutions of the linear eigenvalue problem for the perturbations. This facilitates a quantitative study of both the spectrum and the amplitudes of excited g-modes.
We have carried out a comparative analysis of the properties of dark matter halos in N-body and hydrodynamical simulations. We analyze their density profiles, shapes and kinematical properties with the aim of assessing the effects that hydrodynamical processes might produce on the evolution of the dark matter component. The simulations performed allow us to reproduce dark matter halos with high resolution, although the range of circular velocities is limited. We find that for halos with circular velocities of $[150-200] km s^{-1}$ at the virial radius, the presence of baryons affects the evolu…
Observations with the SZ effect constitute a powerful new tool for investigating clusters and constraining cosmological parameters. Of particular interest is to investigate how the SZ signal correlates with other cluster properties, such as the mass, temperature and X-ray luminosities. In this presentation we quantify these relations for clusters found in hydrodynamical simulations of large scale structure and investigate their dependence on the effects of radiative cooling and pre-heating.
The results from hydrodynamical TREESPH simulations of galaxy clusters are used to investigate the dependence of the final cluster X-ray properties upon the numerical resolution and the assumed star formation models for the cooled gas. A comparison between runs with different star formation methods shows that the results of simulations, based on star formation methods in which gas conversion into stars is controlled by an efficiency parameter c_{star}, are sensitive to the simulation numerical resolution. In this respect star formation methods based instead on a local density threshold, are sh…
We report first results of an implementation of a chemical model in a cosmological code, based on the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) technique. We show that chemical SPH simulations are a promising tool to provide clues for the understanding of the chemical properties of galaxies in relation to their formation and evolution in a cosmological framework.
We present cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy clusters aimed at studying the process of metal enrichment of the intra--cluster medium (ICM). These simulations have been performed by implementing a detailed model of chemical evolution in the Tree-SPH \gd code. This model allows us to follow the metal release from SNII, SNIa and AGB stars, by properly accounting for the lifetimes of stars of different mass, as well as to change the stellar initial mass function (IMF), the lifetime function and the stellar yields. As such, our implementation of chemical evolution represents a power…
We present a study of hydrodynamic drag forces in smoothed particle simulations. In particular, the deceleration of a resolution-limited cold clump of gas moving through a hot medium is examined. It is found that the drag for subsonic velocities exceeds that predicted by simple physical approximations. This is shown to be a result of the hydrodynamical method which encourages the accretion of particles from the hot medium onto a shell around the cold clump, effectively increasing the radius of the clump. For sonic and supersonic velocities, the drag is shown to be dependent on the effective cr…
We present results that suggest that disc angular momentum catastrophes (DAMCs) plaguing hierarchical hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation, not including star formation processes, are due to the inward gas transport that follows bar disk instabilities triggered by interactions and mergers. They also show that DAMCs can be easily avoided by including star-forming processes, as they lead unavoidably to the formation of compact stellar bulges that stabilize disks against bars. The formation of disks similar to those observed demands, in addition, that not all the gas is depleted into st…
We performed hydrodynamical simulations with and without radiative cooling of jet models with parameters representative for the symbiotic system MWC 560. For symbiotic systems we have to perform jet simulations of a pulsed underdense jet in a high density ambient medium. We present the jet structure resulting from our simulations and calculate emission plots which account for expected radiative processes. In addition, our calculations provide expansion velocities for the jet bow shock, the density and temperature structure in the jet, and the propagation and evolution of the jet pulses. In MWC…
We analyze the structural and dynamical properties of disk-like objects formed in fully consistent cosmological simulations which include inefficient star formation. Comparison with data of similar observable properties of spiral galaxies gives satisfactory agreement, in contrast with previous findings using other codes. This suggests that the stellar formation implementation used has allowed the formation of disks as well as guaranteed their stability.
The problem of the resolution of turbulent flows in adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) simulations is investigated by means of 3D hydrodynamical simulations in an idealised setup, representing a moving subcluster during a merger event. AMR simulations performed with the usual refinement criteria based on local gradients of selected variables do not properly resolve the production of turbulence downstream of the cluster. Therefore we apply novel AMR criteria which are optimised to follow the evolution of a turbulent flow. We demonstrate that these criteria provide a better resolution of the flow pa…
We present detailed simulations of the interaction of a stream emanating from a mass-losing secondary with the core of a massive supergiant in the slow merger of the two stars inside a common envelope. The dynamics of the stream can be divided into a ballistic phase, starting at the L_1 point, and a hydrodynamical phase where the stream interacts strongly with the core. Considering the merger of a 1 and 5Msun star with a 20Msun evolved supergiant, we present two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations using the PROMETHEUS code to demonstrate how the penetration depth and post-impact conditions …
We present hydrodynamical simulations, using a 2-D two component model (ambient medium and pul sar wind have different specific heat ratios), of bow shocks in a representative regime for pu lsar wind driven bow-shock nebulae. We also investigate the behaviour of a passive toroidal ma gnetic field wound around the pulsar velocity direction. Moreover we estimate the opacity of t he bow-shock to penetration of ISM neutral hydrogen: this quantity affects observable properti es of the nebula, like its size, shape, velocity and surface brightness distribution. Finally we compare these numerical resu…
Planet evolution is tightly connected to the dynamics of both distant and close disk material. Hence, an appropriate description of disk-planet interaction requires global and high resolution computations, which we accomplish by applying a Nested-Grid method. Through simulations in two and three dimensions, we investigate how migration and accretion are affected by long and short range interactions. For small mass objects, 3D models provide longer growth and migration time scales than 2D ones do, whereas time lengths are comparable for large mass planets.
(Abridged) In the first paper of this series, we presented hydrodynamical simulations with radiative cooling of jet models with parameters representative of the symbiotic system MWC 560. These were jet simulations of a pulsed, initially underdense jet in a high-density ambient medium. They were stopped when the jet reached a length of 50 AU. There, however, a transition of the initially underdense jet towards an overdense jet should occur, which should result in changed kinematics. Therefore, we describe two hydrodynamical simulations with cooling beyond this density balance, one with the same…
We report on time-dependent axisymmetric simulations of an X-ray excited flow from a parsec-scale, rotating, cold torus around an active galactic nucleus. Our simulations account for radiative heating and cooling and radiation pressure force. The simulations follow the development of a broad bi-conical outflow induced mainly by X-ray heating. We compute synthetic spectra predicted by our simulations. The wind characteristics and the spectra support the hypothesis that a rotationally supported torus can serve as the source of a wind which is responsible for the warm absorber gas observed in the…
The abundance and structure of dark matter subhalos has been analyzed extensively in recent studies of dark matter-only simulations, but comparatively little is known about the impact of baryonic physics on halo substructures. We here extend the SUBFIND algorithm for substructure identification such that it can be reliably applied to dissipative hydrodynamical simulations that include star formation. This allows, in particular, the identification of galaxies as substructures in simulations of clusters of galaxies, and a determination of their content of gravitationally bound stars, dark matter…
Aims. This work presents a new hydrodynamical algorithm to study astrophysical detonations. A prime motivation of this development is the description of a carbon detonation in conditions relevant to superbursts, which are thought to result from the propagation of a detonation front around the surface of a neutron star in the carbon layer underlying the atmosphere. Methods. The algorithm we have developed is a finite-volume method inspired by the original MUSCL scheme of van Leer (1979). The algorithm is of second-order in the smooth part of the flow and avoids dimensional splitting. It is appl…
To date, fully cosmological hydrodynamic disk simulations to redshift zero have only been undertaken with particle-based codes, such as GADGET, Gasoline, or GCD+. In light of the (supposed) limitations of traditional implementations of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), or at the very least, their respective idiosyncrasies, it is important to explore complementary approaches to the SPH paradigm to galaxy formation. We present the first high-resolution cosmological disk simulations to redshift zero using an adaptive mesh refinement (AMR)-based hydrodynamical code, in this case, RAMSES. We a…
A large set of TREESPH simulations is used to test the global morphology of galaxy clusters and its evolution against X-ray data. A powerful method to investigate substructures in galaxy clusters are the power ratios introduced by Buote & Tsai. We consider three flat cosmological models: CDM, LCDM($Ω_Λ= 0.7$) and CHDM($Ω_h = 0.2$, 1 massive $ν$), all normalized so to fit the observed number of clusters. For each model we built 40 clusters, using a TREESPH code, and performed a statistical comparison with a data sample including nearby clusters observed with ROSAT PSPC instrument. The compariso…
We present a full hydrodynamical investigation of a system of self-contained, interacting gas `cloudlets'. Calculations are performed using SPH, and cloudlets are allowed to collide, dissipate kinetic energy, merge and undergo local gravitational collapse. The numerical feasibility of such a technique is explored, and the resolution requirements examined. We examine the effect of the collision time and the velocity field on the timescale for evolution of the system, and show that almost all star formation will be confined to dense regions much smaller than the entire cloud. We also investigate…
Results from hydrodynamical SPH simulations of galaxy clusters are used to investigate the dependence of the final cluster X-ray properties on the numerical resolution and the assumed models for the physical gas processes. Two different spatially flat cosmological models have been considered: a low-density cold dark matter universe with a vacuum energy density Omega_L=0.7 (LCDM) and a cold+hot dark matter model (CHDM). These simulations first include radiative cooling and then also conversion of cold gas particles into stars. When cold gas particles are allowed to convert into stars the final …
We simulate the dynamics of the interaction between relativistically expanding spherically symmetric shells using a 1-dimensional hydrodynamic code and calculate spectra and light-curves arising from such collisions by integrating the synchrotron and inverse Compton emission of the shocked gas. The numerical results reflect the most important features observed in Gamma-Ray Bursts: the spectrum exhibits a progressive softening (its break energy decaying exponentially with the 50--300 keV photon fluence), and the pulses that form the burst appear narrower in higher energy bands. Analytical resul…
Transiting planets provide a unique opportunity to study the atmospheres of extra-solar planets. Radiative hydrodynamical models of the atmosphere provide a crucial link between the physical characteristics of the atmosphere and the observed properties. Here I present results from 3D simulations which solve the full Navier-Stokes equations coupled to a flux-limited diffusion treatment of radiation transfer for planets with 1, 3, and 7 day periods. Variations in opacity amongst models leads to a variation in the temperature differential across the planet, while atmospheric dynamics becomes much…
We report results on the formation of disk-like structures in two cosmological hydrodynamical simulations in a hierarchical clustering scenario, sharing the same initial conditions. In the first one, a simple and generic implementation of star formation has allowed galaxy-like objects with stellar bulges and extended, populated disks to form. Gas in the disk comes from both, particles that survive mergers keeping in part their angular momentum content, and new gas supply by infall, once the merger process is over, with global specific angular momentum conservation. The stellar bulge forms from…
Based on axi-symmetric hydrodynamical simulations and 3D reconstructions with Shape, we investigate the kinematic signatures of deviations from homologous ("Hubble-type") outflows in some typical shapes of planetary nebulae. We find that, in most situations considered in our simulations, the deviations from a Hubble-type flow are significant and observable. The deviations are systematic and a simple parameterization of them considerably improves morpho-kinematical models of the simulations. We describe such extensions to a homologous expansion law that capture the global velocity structure of …
Local-box hydrodynamical model atmospheres provide statistical information about the spatial dependence, as well as temporal evolution, of a star's emergent radiation field. Here, we consider late-type stellar atmospheres for which temporal changes of the radiative output are primarily related to convective (granular) surface flows. We derived relations for evaluating the granulation-induced, disk-integrated thus observable fluctuations of the stellar brightness and location of the photocenter from radiation intensities available from a local model. Apart from their application in the context …
NGC 6782 is an early-type barred spiral galaxy exhibiting a rich and complex morphology with multiple ring patterns. To provide a physical understanding of its structure and kinematical properties, two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations have been carried out. Numerical calculations reveal that the striking features in NGC 6782 can be reproduced provided that the gas flow is governed by the gravitational potential associated with a slowly rotating strong bar. In particular, the response of the gaseous disk to the bar potential leads to the excitation of spiral density waves at the inner Lin…
The computationally demanding nature of radiative-hydrodynamical simulations of stellar surface convection warrants an investigation of the sensitivity of the convective structure and spectral synthesis to the numerical resolution and dimension of the simulations, which is presented here. With too coarse a resolution the predicted spectral lines tend to be too narrow, reflecting insufficient Doppler broadening from the convective motions, while at the currently highest affordable resolution the line shapes have converged essentially perfectly to the observed profiles. Similar conclusions are d…
We report the statistical properties of stars, brown dwarfs and multiple systems obtained from the largest hydrodynamical simulation of star cluster formation to date that resolves masses down to the opacity limit for fragmentation (a few Jupiter masses). The simulation is essentially identical to that of Bate, Bonnell & Bromm except that the initial molecular cloud is larger and more massive. It produces more than 1250 stars and brown dwarfs, providing unprecedented statistical information that can be compared with observational surveys. We find that hydrodynamical/sink particle simulations c…
We discuss Tree+SPH simulations of galaxy clusters and groups, aimed at studying the effect of cooling and non-gravitational heating on observable properties of the ICM. We simulate at high resolution four halos, with masses in the range (0.2-4)10^{14}M_sol. We discuss the effects of using different SPH implementations and show that high resolution is mandatory to correctly follow the cooling pattern of the ICM. All of our heating schemes which correctly reproduce the X-ray scaling properties of clusters and groups do not succeed in reducing the fraction of collapsed gas below a level of 20 (30…
We use hydrodynamical N-body simulations to study the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. We construct sets of maps, one square degree in size, in three different cosmological models. We confirm earlier calculations that on the scales studied the kinetic effect is much smaller than the thermal (except close to the thermal null point), with an rms dispersion smaller by about a factor five in the Rayleigh-Jeans region. We study the redshift dependence of the rms distortion and the pixel distribution at the present epoch. We compute the angular power spectra of the maps, including their redshift d…
When low-mass stars form, the collapsing cloud of gas and dust goes through several stages which are usually characterized by the shape of their spectral energy distributions. Such classification is based on the cloud morphology only and does not address the dynamical state of the object. In this paper we investigate the initial cloud collapse and subsequent disk formation through the dynamical behavior as reflected in the sub-millimeter spectral emission line profiles. If a young stellar object is to be characterized by its dynamical structure it is important to know how accurately informatio…
In this work we are interested to study the by-products of SNR-clouds in a starburst (SB) system. These interactions can have an important role in the recycling of matter from the clouds to the ISM and vice-versa. In the present work, we have focused our attention on the global effects of the interactions between clouds and SN shock waves in the ISM of SB environments, and performed 3-D radiative cooling hydrodynamical simulations with the adaptive YGUAZU grid code. We have also considered the effects of the photo-evaporation due to the presence of a high number of UV photons from hot stars an…
We used a series of COBOLD hydrodynamical model atmospheres covering stellar objects from white dwarfs to red giants to derive theoretical estimates of the photometric and photocentric stellar variability in wavelength-integrated light across the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We validated our models against solar measurements from the SOHO/VIRGO instrument. Within our set of models we find a systematic increase of the photometric as well as photocentric variability - which turn out to be closely connected - with decreasing surface gravity. The estimated absolute levels of the photocentric varia…
The development of turbulent gas flows in the intra-cluster medium and in the core of a galaxy cluster is studied by means of adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) cosmological simulations. A series of six runs was performed, employing identical simulation parameters but different criteria for triggering the mesh refinement. In particular, two different AMR strategies were followed, based on the regional variability of control variables of the flow and on the overdensity of subclumps, respectively. We show that both approaches, albeit with different results, are useful to get an improved resolution o…
In papers I and II in this series, we presented hydrodynamical simulations of jet models with parameters representative of the symbiotic system MWC 560. These were simulations of a pulsed, initially underdense jet in a high density ambient medium. Since the pulsed emission of the jet creates internal shocks and since the jet velocity is very high, the jet bow shock and the internal shocks are heated to high temperatures and should therefore emit X-ray radiation. In this paper, we investigate in detail the X-ray properties of the jets in our models. We have focused our study on the total X-ray …
We present results from a careful and detailed analysis of the structural and dynamical properties of a sample of 29 disc-like objects identified at z=0 in three AP3M-SPH fully consistent cosmological simulations. These simulations are realizations of a CDM hierarchical model, where an inefficient Schmidt law-like algorithm to model the stellar formation process has been implemented. We focus on properties that can be constrained with available data from observations of spiral galaxies, namely, the bulge and disc structural parameters and the rotation curves. Comparisons with data from Broeils…
Modern hydrodynamical simulations offer nowadays a powerful means to trace the evolution of the X-ray properties of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) during the cosmological history of the hierarchical build up of galaxy clusters. In this paper we review the current status of these simulations and how their predictions fare in reproducing the most recent X-ray observations of clusters. After briefly discussing the shortcomings of the self-similar model, based on assuming that gravity only drives the evolution of the ICM, we discuss how the processes of gas cooling and non-gravitational heating ar…
We present the results of realistic, 3D, hydrodynamical, simulations of surface convection in red giant stars with varying effective temperatures and metallicities. We use the convection simulations as time-dependent, hydrodynamical, model atmospheres to compute spectral line profiles for a number of ions and molecules under the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). We compare the results with the predictions of line formation calculations based on 1D, hydrostatic, model stellar atmospheres in order to estimate the impact of 3D models on the derivation of elemental abundances. W…
The ejection of the gas out of the disk in late-type galaxies is related to star formation and is due mainly to Type II supernovae. In this paper we studied in detail the development of the Galactic fountains in order to understand their dynamical evolution and their influence in the redistribution of the freshly delivered metals over the disk. To this aim, we performed a number of 3D hydrodynamical radiative cooling simulations of the gas in the Milky Way where the whole Galaxy structure, the Galactic differential rotation and the supernovae explosions generated by a single OB association are…
We derive and analyze a simplified formulation of the numerical viscosity terms appearing in the expression of the numerical fluxes associated to several High-Resolution Shock-Capturing schemes. After some algebraic pre-processing, we give explicit expressions for the numerical viscosity terms of two of the most widely used flux formulae, which implementation saves computational time in multidimensional simulations of relativistic flows. Additionally, such treatment explicitely cancells and factorizes a number of terms helping to amortiguate the growing of round-off errors. We have checked the…
We investigate the properties of the Lyman alpha forest as predicted by numerical simulations for a range of currently viable cosmological models. This is done in order to understand the dependencies of the forest on cosmological parameters. Focusing on the redshift range from two to four, we show that: (1) most of the evolution in the distributions of optical depth, flux and column density can be understood by simple scaling relations, (2) the shape of optical depth distribution is a sensitive probe of the amplitude of density fluctuations on scales of a few hundred kpc, (3) the mean of the b…
We present a study of the galaxy population predicted by hydrodynamical simulations for a set of 19 galaxy clusters based on the GADGET-2 Tree+SPH code. These simulations include gas cooling, star formation, a detailed treatment of stellar evolution and chemical enrichment, as well as SN energy feedback in the form of galactic winds. We compute the spectro-photometric properties of the simulated galaxies. All simulations have been performed for two choices of the stellar initial mass function: a standard Salpeter IMF, and a top-heavier IMF. Several of the observational properties of the galaxy…
We report the results of 1-D hydrodynamical modelling of the evolution of gas in galaxy clusters. We have incorporated many of the effects missing from earlier 1-D treatments: improved modelling of the dark matter and galaxy distributions, cosmologically realistic evolution of the cluster potential, and the effects of a multiphase cooling flow. The model utilises a fairly standard 1-D Lagrangian hydrodynamical code to calculate the evolution of the intracluster gas. This is coupled to a theoretical model for the growth of dark matter density perturbations. The main advantages of this treatment…
We present hydrodynamical simulations, using a 2-D two fluid model, of bow shocks in a representative regime for pulsar wind driven bow-shock nebulae. We also investigate the behaviour of a passive toroidal magnetic field wounded around the pulsar velocity direction. Moreover we estimate the opacity of the bow-shock to penetration of ISM neutral hydrogen. Finally we compare these numerical results with those from an analytical model.
We develop diagnostics based on gas kinematics to identify the presence of a bar in an edge-on spiral galaxy and determine its orientation. We use position-velocity diagrams (PVDs) obtained by projecting edge-on two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of the gas flow in a barred galaxy potential. We show that when a nuclear spiral is formed, the presence of a gap in the PVDs, between the signature of the nuclear spiral and that of the outer parts of the disk, reliably indicates the presence of a bar. This gap is due to the presence of shocks and inflows in the simulations, leading to a depl…
We analyse the number density and radial distribution of substructures and satellite galaxies using cosmological simulations that follow the gas dynamics of a baryonic component, including shock heating, radiative cooling and star formation within the hierarchical concordance LCDM model. We find that the dissipation of the baryons greatly enhances the survival of subhaloes, expecially in the galaxy core, resulting in a radial distribution of satellite galaxies that closely follows the overall mass distribution in the inner part of the halo. Hydrodynamical simulations are necessary to resolve t…
We present results on the X-ray properties of clusters and groups of galaxies, extracted from a large hydrodynamical simulation. We used the GADGET code to simulate a LambdaCDM model within a box of 192 Mpc/h on a side, with 480^3 dark matter particles and as many gas particles. The simulation includes radiative cooling, star formation and supernova feedback. The simulated M-T relation is consistent with observations once we mimic the procedure for mass estimates applied to real clusters. Also, with the adopted choices of Omega_m=0.3 and sigma_8=0.8 the resulting XTF agrees with observational …
We analyse a hydrodynamical simulation model for the recurrent heating of the central intracluster medium (ICM) by active galactic nuclei (AGN). Besides the self-gravity of the dark matter and gas components, our approach includes the radiative cooling and photoheating of the gas, as well as a subresolution multiphase model for star formation and supernova feedback. Additionally, we incorporate a periodic heating mechanism in the form of hot, buoyant bubbles, injected into the intragalactic medium (IGM) during the active phases of the accreting central AGN. We use simulations of isolated clust…
We present results of an analysis of the structural and kinematical properties of a sample of elliptical-like objects (ELOs) identified in four hydrodynamical, self-consistent simulations run with the DEVA code (Serna et al. 2003). Star formation has been implemented in the code through a simple phenomenological parameterization, that takes into account stellar physics processes only implicitly through the values of a threshold gas density, $ρ_{\rm g,thres}$, and an efficiency parameter, $c_*$. The four simulations operate in the context of a $Λ$CDM cosmological model consistent with observati…
Based on radiation hydrodynamics modeling of stellar convection zones, a diffusion scheme has been devised describing the downward penetration of convective motions beyond the Schwarzschild boundary (overshoot) into the radiative interior. This scheme of exponential diffusive overshoot has already been successfully applied to AGB stars. Here we present an application to the Sun in order to determine the time scale and depth extent of this additional mixing, i.e. diffusive overshoot at the base of the convective envelope. We calculated the associated destruction of lithium during the evolution …
We study the neutrino-driven wind from the proto-neutron star by the general relativistic hydrodynamical simulations. We examine the properties of the neutrino-driven wind to explore the possibility of the r-process nucleosynthesis. The numerical simulations with the neutrino heating and cooling processes are performed with the assumption of the constant neutrino luminosity by using realistic profiles of the proto-neutron star (PNS) as well as simplified models. The dependence on the mass of PNS and the neutrino luminosity is studied systematically. Comparisons with the analytic treatment in t…
