Optical spectroscopy on single crystals of the new iron arsenide superconductor Ba{0.55}K{0.45}Fe2As2 shows that the infrared spectrum consists of two major components: a strong metallic Drude band and a well separated mid infrared absorption centered at 0.7 eV. It is difficult to separate the two components unambiguously but several fits of Lorentzian peaks suggest a model with a Drude peak having a plasma frequency of 1.8 to 2.1 eV and a midinfrared peak with a plasma frequency of 2.5 eV. In contrast to the cuprate superconductors the scattering rate obtained from the extended Drude model saturates at 150 meV as compared to 500 meV for a typical cuprate. Detailed analysis of the frequency dependent scattering rate shows that the charge carriers interact with broad bosonic spectrum with a peak at 25 meV and a coupling constant lambda =approx 2 at low temperature. As the temperature increases this coupling weakens to lambda=0.6 at ambient temperature. This suggests a bosonic spectrum that is similar to what is seen in the lower Tc cuprates.
A theory for tunneling spectroscopy in normal metal /insulator/triplet superconductor junction is presented. We assume two kinds of non-unitary triplet superconducting states which are the most promising states for Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$. The calculated conductance spectra showzero-bias peaks as well as gap structures. The existences of residual components in the spectra reflect the non-unitary properties of superconducting states.
We present intrinsic tunneling spectroscopy measurements on small Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$ mesas. The tunnel conductance curves show both sharp peaks at the superconducting gap voltage and broad humps representing the $c$-axis pseudo-gap. The superconducting gap vanishes at $T_c$, while the pseudo-gap exists both above and below $T_c$. Our observation implies that the superconducting and pseudo-gaps represent different coexisting phenomena.
The vortex electronic structure in the multiband superconductor NbSe2 is studied by means of Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy (STS) using a superconducting tip. The use of a superconducting tip (Pb) as a probe provides an enhancement of the different features related to the DOS of NbSe2 in the tunneling conductance curves. This use allows the observation of rich patterns of electronic states in the conductance images around the vortex cores in a wide range of temperature, as well as the simultaneous acquisition of Josephson current images in the vortex state.
The recently discovered superconducting - spin density wave materials, containing Fe and As, have raised huge interest. However most materials prepared to date, suffer from a varying degree of content of foreign Fe-As phases, Fe2As, FeAs2 and FeAs, which can lead to wrong conclusions concerning the properties of these materials. We show here that Mossbauer Spectroscopy is able to determine quite easily the relative content of the foreign phases. This procedure is demonstrated by a study of seven samples of superconducting or spin density wave materials, prepared in three different laboratories…
We performed optical spectroscopy measurement on a superconducting Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystal with T$_c$=37 K. Formation of the superconducting energy gaps in the far-infared reflectance spectra below T$_c$ is clearly observed. The gap amplitudes match well with the two distinct superconducting gaps observed in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments on different Fermi surfaces. We determined absolute value of the penetration depth at 10 K as $λ\simeq2000 Å$. A spectral weight analysis shows that the Ferrell-Glover-Timkham sum rule is satisfied at low energy s…
Intrinsic tunneling spectroscopy in high magnetic field ($H$) is used for a direct test of superconducting features in a quasiparticle density of states of high-$T_c$ superconductors. We were able to distinguish with a great clarity two co-existing gaps: (i) the superconducting gap, which closes as $H \to H_{c2}(T)$ and $T\to T_c(H)$, and (ii) the $c$-axis pseudo-gap, which does not change neither with $H$, nor $T$. Strikingly different magnetic field dependencies, together with previously observed different temperature dependencies of the two gaps ~\cite{Krasnov}, speak against the supercondu…
After more than 25 years of research, three even-parity superconducting states -- the $d+id$-wave, $d+ig$-wave, and $s+id$-wave states -- have emerged as leading candidates for the superconducting states of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. In the present work, we propose a tunneling spectroscopy experiment for distinguishing among these three superconducting states. The key component of our proposal is that we examine the conductance spectra of normal-metal/Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ junctions with various angles between the junction interface and the crystal axis of the Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. The angle dependence of the conductanc…
Point contact spectroscopy measurements have been performed on Nb/PdNi bilayers in which the thickness of the Nb layer, dNb, was kept constant to 40 nm while the thickness of PdNi, dPdNi, was changed from 2 nm to 9 nm. Features related to the superconducting gap induced in the ferromagnet have been observed in the dV/dI versus V curves. These structures show a non-monotonic behaviour as a function of dPdNi as a consequence of the damped oscillatory behaviour of the superconducting order parameter in the ferromagnetic layer.
Motivated by recent experiments, we investigate Josephson scanning tunneling spectroscopy in an s-wave superconductor. We demonstrate that the spatial oscillations in the superconducting order parameter induced by defects can be spatially imaged through local measurements of the critical Josephson current, providing unprecedented insight into the nature of superconductivity. The spatial form of the Josephson current reflects the nature of the defects, and can be used to probe defect-induced phase transitions from an $S=0$ to an $S=1/2$ ground state.
The superconducting compound, LiFeAs, is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. A gap map of the unreconstructed surface indicates a high degree of homogeneity in this system. Spectra at 2 K show two nodeless superconducting gaps with $Δ_1=5.3\pm0.1$ meV and $Δ_2=2.5\pm0.2$ meV. The gaps close as the temperature is increased to the bulk $T_c$ indicating that the surface accurately represents the bulk. A dip-hump structure is observed below $T_c$ with an energy scale consistent with a magnetic resonance recently reported by inelastic neutron scattering.
The superconducting gap in FeAs-based superconductor SmFeAs(O1-xFx) (x = 0.15 and 0.30) and the temperature dependence of the sample with x = 0.15 have been measured by Andreev reflection spectroscopy. The intrinsic superconducting gap is independent of contacts while many other "gap-like" features vary appreciably for different contacts. The determined gap value of 2D = 13.34 +/-0.47 meV for SmFeAs(O0.85F0.15) gives 2D/kBTC = 3.68, close to the BCS prediction of 3.53. The superconducting gap decreases with temperature and vanishes at TC, in a manner similar to the BCS behavior but dramaticall…
We report on tunneling spectroscopy experiments in small grains of the new binary intermetallic superconductor MgB2. Experiments have been performed at 2.5 K using a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope. Good fit to the BCS model is obtained, with a gap value of 2 meV. In the framework of this model, this value should correspond to a surface critical temperature of 13.2 K. No evidence of gap anisotropy has been found.
Carbon- and boron-2$p$ states of superconducting and non-superconducting boron-doped diamond samples are measured using soft X-ray emission and absorption spectroscopy. For the superconducting sample, a large density of hole states is observed in the valence band in addition to the states in the impurity band. The hole states in the valence band is located at about 1.3 eV below the valence band maximum regardless of the doping level, which cannot be interpreted within a simple rigid band model. Present experimental results, combined with the first principles calculations, suggest that supercon…
We present the first scanning tunneling spectroscopy study on the Chevrel phase PbMo6S8, an extreme type II superconductor with a coherence length only slightly larger than in high-Tc cuprates. Tunneling spectra measured on atomically flat terraces are spatially homogeneous and show well-defined coherence peaks. The low-energy spectral weight, the zero bias conductance and the temperature dependence of the gap are incompatible with a conventional isotropic s-wave interpretation, revealing the presence of low-energy excitations in the superconducting state. We show that our data are consistent …
The heating-compensated interlayer tunneling spectroscopy is performed on stacks of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$ intrinsic junctions. The high-accuracy spectra without the local heating, for varying temperatures and magnetic fields, reveal that the spectral weight forming the superconducting coherence peak is mainly contributed from the dip position of the hump structure of the pseudogap state. The observed U-shaped subgap structure is consistent with the weighted antinodal tunneling between Cu-O double layers in a junction as suggested in Ref. [17].
We investigated the microwave conductivity spectrum of FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ epitaxial films on CaF$_2$ in the vicinity of the superconducting transition. We observed the critical behavior of the superconducting fluctuations in these films with a dimensional crossover from two-dimensional to three-dimensional as the film thickness increased. From the temperature dependence of the scaling parameters we conclude that the universality class of the superconducting transition in FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ is that of the 3D-XY model. The lower limit of the onset temperature of the superconducting fluct…
Temperature and doping dependent tunneling spectroscopy on $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}$ single crystals has been investigated by using break-junction technique. The results provide direct evidence that the pseudogap persists into heavily overdoped regime, possibly in whole doping range of the superconducting phase. The gap value determined from the peak-to-peak of the conductance, $Δ_{p-p}$, exhibits a jump-like increase as $T$ is raised across the critical temperature. The magnitude of the jump, the pseudogap opening temperature and superconducting gap decrease with raising doping. The $Δ_{p-p}$ b…
In this letter we describe the observation of a magnetic field dependent electronic gap, suggestive of local superconductivity, in the point-contact spectrum of micro-crystalline graphite. Magnetic field dependent point-contact spectroscopy was carried out at a temperature of $1.8\,\mathrm{K}$ using an etched aluminium tip. At zero field a gap structure in the differential conductance is observed, showing a gap of $Δ= 4.2\,\mathrm{meV}$. On applying magnetic fields of up to $500\,\mathrm{mT}$, this gap gradually closes, following the theoretical prediction by Ginzburg and Landau for a fully fl…
We report on investigations of the superconducting energy gap of the A15 superconductor Nb_3Sn by point-contact spectroscopy of breakjunctions. The voltage-dependent differential conductance dI/dV reveals features of a second energy gap besides the energy gap known from previous tunnel measurements with maxima at Δ_1=3.92 +/- 0.16 meV and Δ_2=0.85 +/- 0.17 meV as derived from a histogram summarizing the data of more than 60 contacts. These findings are the first spectroscopic evidence that Nb_3Sn belongs to the class of two-band superconductors and they are in line with low-temperature specifi…
We present direct measurements of the superconducting order parameter in nearly optimal FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ single crystals with critical temperature $T_C \approx 14$ K. Using intrinsic multiple Andreev reflection effect (IMARE) spectroscopy and measurements of lower critical field, we directly determined two superconducting gaps, $Δ_L \approx 3.3 - 3.4$ meV and $Δ_S \approx 1$ meV, and their temperature dependences. We show that a two-band model fits well the experimental data. The estimated electron-boson coupling constants indicate a strong intraband and a moderate interband interaction.
We comment on the model proposed by Orenstein and Dodge in arXiv:1506.06758v1, which describes time-domain terahertz measurements of transiently generated, high-electron-mobility (or superconducting) phases of solids. The authors' main conclusion is that time-domain terahertz spectroscopy does not measure a response function that is mathematically identical to the transient optical conductivity. We show that although this is correct, the difference between the measured response function and the microscopic optical conductivity is small for realistic experimental parameters. We also show that f…
We develop a theory of tunneling spectroscopy in superconducting topological insulator (STI), i.e. superconducting state of a carrier-doped topological insulator. Based on the quasi-classical approximation, we obtain an analytical expression of the energy dispersion of surface Andreev bound states (ABSs) and a compact formula for tunneling conductance of normal metal/STI junctions. The obtained compact formula of tunneling conductance makes the analysis of experimental data easy. As an application of our theory, we study tunneling conductance in Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$. We reveal that our theory re…
The superconducting energy gap and quasiparticle density of states (DOS) is measured by means of Andreev-reflection spectroscopy in normal metal - superconductor point contacts. It is found that both in paramagnetic and in antiferromagnetically ordered states (Tm- and Dy-compounds) the DOS has the BCS-like form while in Er- the dip in the temperature dependence of the gap is observed at the Neel temperature. In Ho-compound, the non-BCS-like form of DOS is observed in the temperature region where the incommensurate spin density waves exist along the axes a and c . Inelastic point-contact spectr…
We study the new binary intermetallic superconductor MgB2 using high-resolution photo-emission spectroscopy. The superconducting-state spectrum measured at 5.4 K shows a coherent peak with a shoulder structure, in sharp contrast to that expected from a simple isotropic-gap opening. The spectrum can be well reproduced using the weighted sum of two Dynes functions with the gap sizes of 1.7 and 5.6 meV. Temperature-dependent study shows that both gaps close at the bulk transition temperature. These results provide spectroscopic evidence for a multiple gap of MgB2.
The description of the proximity effect in superconducting/ferromagnetic heterostructures requires to use spin-dependent boundary conditions. Such boundary conditions must take into account the spin dependence of the phase shifts acquired by electrons upon scattering on the boundaries of ferromagnets. The present article shows that this property can strongly affect the critical temperature and the energy dependence of the density of states of diffusive heterostructures. These effects should allow a better caracterisation of diffusive superconductor/ferromagnet interfaces.
Using muon spin rotation (\muSR) and infrared spectroscopy we investigated the recently discovered superconductor K0.73Fe1.67Se2 with Tc = 32 K. We show that the combined data can be consistently described in terms of a macroscopically phase segregated state with a matrix of ~88% volume fraction that is insulating and strongly magnetic and inclusions with a ~12% volume fraction which are metallic, superconducting and non-magnetic. The electronic properties of the latter, in terms of the normal state plasma frequency and the superconducting condensate density, appear to be similar as in other i…
Point contact Andreev reflection studies have been conducted on FeSe single crystals by lowering the temperatures down to 0.5 K. The point contact Andreev reflection spectra were analyzed in the framework of the two-band model. As a result, the presence of two anisotropic superconducting gaps in FeSe were certainly established and their BCS-like temperature dependencies were obtained. The weights of each gap have been determined and the anisotropy parameter has been calculated. It is shown, that sub-kelvin temperatures are necessary to ascertain details of the superconducting gap structure, es…
We use angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to study the momentum dependence of the superconducting gap in NdFeAsO1-xFx single crystals. We find that the Gamma hole pocket is fully gapped below the superconducting transition temperature. The value of the superconducting gap is 15 +- 1.5 meV and its anisotropy around the hole pocket is smaller than 20% of this value. This is consistent with an isotropic or anisotropic s-wave symmetry of the order parameter or exotic d-wave symmetry with nodes located off the Fermi surface sheets. This is a significant departure from the situation i…
Pressure dependence of the electronic and crystal structures of K$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_{2}$, which has pressure-induced two superconducting domes of SC I and SC II, was investigated by x-ray emission spectroscopy and diffraction. X-ray diffraction data show that compressibility along the c-axis changes around 12 GPa, where a new superconducting phase of SC II appears. This suggests a possible tetragonal to collapsed tetragonal phase transition. X-ray emission spectroscopy data also shows the change in the electronic structure around 12 GPa. These results can be explained by the scenario that the…
We present resistance versus temperature data for a series of boron-doped nanocrystalline diamond films whose grain size is varied by changing the film thickness. Upon extracting the fluctuation conductivity near to the critical temperature we observe three distinct scaling regions -- 3D intragrain, quasi-0D, and 3D intergrain -- in confirmation of the prediction of Lerner, Varlamov and Vinokur. The location of the dimensional crossovers between these scaling regions allows us to determine the tunnelling energy and the Thouless energy for each film. This is a demonstration of the use of \emph{…
We present a study of the superconducting energy gap performed with point contact spectroscopy in a single crystal of the superconductor Zr0:97V0:03B2. We determined the size and evolution with temperature of the energy gap, the transition temperature in the compound occurs at the onset of Tc = 9.3 K. The point contact junctions were measured from 1.7 to 20 K. The differential conductance as a function of bias voltage was analyzed with the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model, the evolution of the gap with temperature was compared with the BCS theory, the ratio 2Δ(0)/KBTC was of the order of 8.95 in…
Point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy was performed on single crystals of the heavy-fermion superconductor PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$, down to 90mK and up to 3Tesla. The conductance spectra showed multiple structures, including zero-bias peaks and spectral dips, which are interpreted as signatures of multiple pairing gaps, one clearly having nodes. Samples with 2% Ru replacing Os were also measured, showing pronounced spectral humps consistent with the emergence of a non-nodal gap. Detailed analysis of the spectral evolution revealed a magnetic field-\emph{vs.}-temperature phase diagram for P…
We identified quasiparticle states at well-defined energies inside the superconducting gap of the electron system at the LaAlO$_3$-SrTiO$_3$ interface using tunneling spectroscopy. The states are found only in a number of samples and depend upon the thermal-cycling history of the samples. The states consist of a peak at zero energy and other peaks at finite energies, symmetrically placed around zero energy. These peaks disappear, together with the superconducting gap, with increasing temperature and magnetic field. We discuss the likelihood of various physical mechanisms that are known to caus…
Time-resolved terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) is an ideal tool for probing photoinduced nonequilibrium metallic and superconducting states. Here, we focus on the interpretation of the two-dimensional response function $Σ(ω;t)$ that it measures, examining whether it provides an accurate snapshot of the instantaneous optical conductivity, $σ(ω;t)$. For the Drude model with a time-dependent carrier density, we show that $Σ(ω;t)$ is not simply related to $σ(ω;t)$. The difference in the two response functions is most pronounced when the momentum relaxation rate of photocarriers is long…
Planar tunneling junctions of the presumably unconventional superconductor FeSe were prepared and investigated. The junctions consisted of FeSe/AlOx/Ag multilayers patterned lithographically into mesa structures. Bias voltage dependent differential conductivities dI/dV(V) of junctions in the tunneling, intermediate barrier strength, and metallic regimes were investigated. Depending on the barrier type between two and four features of the conductivity were obtained, which are discussed in the framework of multiple superconducting energy gaps. Specifically we reproduced with all barrier types an…
We performed point-contact spectroscopy on the binary superconductor MgB$_2$. The differential conductance shows gap-related structures which vary in width and position from contact to contact. The distribution of energy gaps shows a distinct accumulation around 1.7 and 7 meV which is associated with the occurrence of a small and a large energy gap in MgB$_2$. While with increasing $T$ the structure in $dI/dV$ associated with the small gap is present up to $T_C$, in magnetic field it is suppressed well below $B_{c2}$.
We report a detailed spectroscopic study of the electron doped cuprate superconductor Pr(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4-δ) using point contact junctions for x=0.125(underdoped), x=0.15(optimally doped) and x=0.17(overdoped). From our conductance measurements we are able to identify bosonic resonances for each doping. These excitations disappear above the critical temperature, and above the critical magnetic field. We find that the energy of the bosonic excitations decreases with doping, which excludes lattice vibrations as the paring glue. We conclude that the bosonic mediator for these cuprates is more likel…
We have examined the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and orbital depairing in thin films of Nb-doped SrTiO$_3$ by superconducting tunneling spectroscopy. The orbital depairing is geometrically suppressed in the two-dimensional limit, enabling a quantitative evaluation of the Fermi level spin-orbit scattering using Maki's theory. The response of the superconducting gap under in-plane magnetic fields demonstrates short spin-orbit scattering times $τ_{so} \leq 1.1$ ps. Analysis of the orbital depairing indicates that the heavy electron band contributes significantly to pairing. These results …
Superconducting persistent-current qubits are quantum-coherent artificial atoms with multiple, tunable energy levels. In the presence of large-amplitude harmonic excitation, the qubit state can be driven through one or more of the constituent energy-level avoided crossings. The resulting Landau-Zener-Stueckelberg (LZS) transitions mediate a rich array of quantum-coherent phenomena. We review here three experimental works based on LZS transitions: Mach-Zehnder-type interferometry between repeated LZS transitions, microwave-induced cooling, and amplitude spectroscopy. These experiments exhibit a…
Using intrinsic multiple Andreev reflections effect (IMARE) spectroscopy, we studied ballistic superconductor - normal metal - superconductor (SnS) contacts in layered oxypnictide superconductors NdFeAsO$_{0.6}$H$_{0.36}$ with critical temperatures $T_c = 45-48$ K. We directly determined the magnitude of two bulk superconducting order parameters, the large gap $Δ_L \approx 10.4$ meV, and a possible small gap $Δ_S \approx 1.8$ meV, and their temperature dependence. Additionally, a resonant coupling with a characteristic bosonic mode was observed. The boson energy at 4.2 K, $\varepsilon_0 = 10.5…
We investigated SrFe$\mathrm{_2}$(As$\mathrm{_{1-x}}$P$\mathrm{_x}$)$\mathrm{_2}$ single crystals with four different phosphorus concentrations x in the superconducting phase (x = 0.35, 0.46) and in the magnetic phase (x = 0, 0.2). The superconducting samples display a V-shaped superconducting gap, which suggests nodal superconductivity. Furthermore we determined the superconducting coherence length by measuring the spatially resolved superconducting density of states (DOS). Using inelastic tunneling spectroscopy we investigated excitations in the samples with four different phosphorus concent…
We have investigated the low energy electronic state of a boron-doped diamond thin film by the ultrahigh resolution laser-excited photoemission spectroscopy. We observed a clear shift of the leading edge below 11 K indicative of a superconducting gap opening ($Δ\sim 0.78$ meV at 4.5 K). The gap feature is significantly broad and the well-defined quasiparticle peak is not recognizable even at the lowest temperature of measurement 4.5 K. We discuss our result in terms of possible disorder effect on superconductivity in this system.
We study the quantum mechanical behavior of a macroscopic, three-body, superconducting circuit. Microwave spectroscopy on our system, a resonator coupling two large Josephson junctions, produced complex energy spectra well explained by quantum theory over a large frequency range. By tuning each junction separately into resonance with the resonator, we first observe strong coupling between each junction and the resonator. Bringing both junctions together into resonance with the resonator, we find spectroscopic evidence for entanglement between all three degrees of freedom and suggest a new meth…
Electronic structure of newly synthesized single crystals of calcium iron arsenide doped with sodium with Tc ranging from 33 to 14 K has been determined by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The measured band dispersion is in general agreement with theoretical calculations, nonetheless implies absence of Fermi surface nesting at antiferromagnetic vector. A clearly developing below Tc strongly band-dependant superconducting gap has been revealed for samples with various doping levels. BCS ratio for optimal doping, $2Δ/k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}=5.5$, is substantially smaller than the nu…
The inelastic magnetic scattering of neutrons from thin superconducting films irradiated with microwave radiations, is analyzed. This process is due to the interaction of the magnetic field generated by the neutron, with the oscillating current induced by the electromagnetic field penetrated into the film. In the Born approximation, the neutron energy can both increase and decrease by the energy quantum of the field. The scattering cross section, which increases with decreasing the field frequency, is derived, and its numerical calculations are carried out. Measurements of this cross section g…
New tunneling data are reported in underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8-d using superconductor-insulator-superconductor break junctions. Energy gaps, Delta, of 51+2, 54+2 and 57+3 meV are observed for three crystals with Tc=77, 74, and 70 K respectively. These energy gaps are nearly three times larger than for overdoped crystals with similar Tc. Detailed examination of tunneling spectra over a wide doping range from underdoped to overdoped, including the Josephson IcRn product, indicate that these energy gaps are predominantly of superconducting origin.
Specific heat has been measured down to 600 mK and up to 8 Tesla by the highly sensitive AC microcalorimetry on the MgCNi3 single crystals with Tc ~ 7 K. Exponential decay of the electronic specific heat at low temperatures proved that a superconducting energy gap is fully open on the whole Fermi surface, in agreement with our previous magnetic penetration depth measurements on the same crystals. The specific-heat data analysis shows consistently the strong coupling strength 2D/kTc ~ 4. This scenario is supported by the direct gap measurements via the point-contact spectroscopy. Moreover, the …
In this short review, we attempt to give a comprehensive discussion of studies performed to date by muon-spin spectroscopy (more precisely the relaxation and rotation technique, also know as \muSR technique) on the recently discovered layered iron-based superconductors. On one side, \muSR has been used to characterized the magnetic state of different families of layered iron-based systems. Similarly the subtle interplay of the magnetic state and the structural transition present in some families has been investigated. We will also discuss the information provided by this technique on the inter…
Using Andreev reflection (AR) as an experimental gauge of the superconducting proximity effect (PE), we assess the topological purity of the superconductivity that is induced by the c-axis PE between an s-wave superconductor and the topological insulators Bi$_{2}$X$_{3}$ (X=Se,Te). Point-contact AR spectroscopy is performed with Nb tips on Bi$_{2}$X$_{3}$ single crystals at 4.2 K. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy is also used, to locate the Fermi level $E_F$ relative to the Dirac point in the crystals. The AR data is analyzed with Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk theory, taking into account tip-induced…
The superconducting systems emerging from topological insulators upon metal ion intercalation or application of high pressure are ideal for investigation of possible topological superconductivity. In this context, Sr-intercalated Bi$_2$Se$_3$ is specially interesting because it displays pressure induced re-entrant superconductivity where the high pressure phase shows almost two times higher $T_c$ than the ambient superconducting phase ( $T_C\sim$ 2.9 K). Interestingly, unlike the ambient phase, the pressure-induced superconducting phase shows strong indication of unconventional superconductivi…
The thermal conductivity $κ$ of underdoped \Y was measured in the $T \to 0$ limit as a function of hole concentration $p$ across the superconducting critical point at $p_{SC}$ = 5.0%. ``Time doping'' was used to resolve the evolution of bosonic and fermionic contributions with high accuracy. For $p \leqslant p_{SC}$, we observe an additional $T^3$ contribution to $κ$ which we attribute to the boson excitations of a phase with long-range spin or charge order. Fermionic transport, manifest as a linear term in $κ$, is seen to persist unaltered through $p_{SC}$, showing that the state just below $…
We measure the anisotropic mid-infrared response of electrons and phonons in bulk YBa2Cu3O7 after femtosecond photoexcitation. A line shape analysis of specific lattice modes reveals their transient occupation and coupling to the superconducting condensate. The apex oxygen vibration is strongly excited within 150 fs demonstrating that the lattice absorbs a major portion of the pump energy before the quasiparticles are thermalized. Our results attest to substantial electron-phonon scattering and introduce a powerful concept probing electron-lattice interactions in a variety of complex materials…
We report on the superconducting properties of A_{x}Fe_{2-y}Se_{2} (A = Rb, K) single crystals studied with the muon spin relaxation or rotation (\muSR) technique. At low temperatures, close to 90% of the sample volumes exhibit large-moment magnetic order which impedes the investigation of their superconducting properties by \muSR. On the other hand, about 10% of the sample volumes remain paramagnetic and clearly show a superconducting response. The temperature dependence of the superconducting carrier density was analyzed within the framework of a single s-wave gap scenario. The zero-temperat…
A precursor of superconductivity has been searched in the in-plane optical spectra of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$, in which the previous $c$-axis optical spectra showed the presence of superconducting carriers at a temperature far above $T_c$ [Uykur $et al$., Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 127003 (2014)][Dubroka $et al$., Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 047006 (2011)]. By carefully subtracting the normal component from the imaginary part of conductivity $σ_2$($ω$), we found a clear in-plane response of superconducting condensate at the temperature consistent with the $c$-axis optical data. This confirms that t…
We use point contact spectroscopy to probe the superconducting and normal state properties of the iron-based superconductor $\rm{NaFe_{1-\textit{x}}Co_{\textit{x}}As}$ with $\rm{\textit{x} = 0, 0.02, 0.06}$. Andreev spectra corresponding to multiple superconducting gaps are detected in the superconducting phase. For $\rm{\textit{x} = 0.02}$, a broad conductance enhancement around zero bias voltage is detected in both the normal and the superconducting phase. Such a feature is not present in the $\rm{\textit{x} = 0.06}$ samples. We suspect that this enhancement is caused by orbital fluctuations…
The phenomenon of field-induced superconductor-to-insulator transitions observed experimentally in electron-doped SrTiO$_{3}$/LaAlO$_{3}$ interfaces, analyzed recently by means of 2D superconducting fluctuations theory (Phys. Rev. B \textbf{104}, 054503 (2021)), is revisited with new insights associating it with the appearance at low temperatures of field-induced boson insulating states. Within the framework of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau functional approach, we pinpoint the origin of these states in field-induced extreme softening of fluctuation modes over a large region in momentum sp…
The type I superconductor lead (Pb) has been theoretically predicted to be a two-band superconductor. We use scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) to resolve two superconducting gaps with an energy difference of 150$\,μ$eV. Tunneling into Pb(111), Pb(110) and Pb(100) crystals reveals a strong dependence of the two coherence peak intensities on the crystal orientation. We show that this is the result of a selective tunneling into the two bands at the energy of the two coherence peaks. This is further sustained by the observation of signatures of the Fermi sheets in differential conductance maps…
