After more than 25 years of research, three even-parity superconducting states -- the $d+id$-wave, $d+ig$-wave, and $s+id$-wave states -- have emerged as leading candidates for the superconducting states of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. In the present work, we propose a tunneling spectroscopy experiment for distinguishing among these three superconducting states. The key component of our proposal is that we examine the conductance spectra of normal-metal/Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ junctions with various angles between the junction interface and the crystal axis of the Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. The angle dependence of the conductance spectra shows a unique pattern in each superconducting state, which can function as a fingerprint for verifying the pairing symmetry of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$.
We examine the tunneling spectroscopy of three-dimensional normal-metal/Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ junctions as an experimental means to identify pairing symmetry in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. In particular, we consider three different possible pairing states in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$: spin-singlet chiral $d$-wave, spin-triplet helical $p$-wave, and spin-nematic $f$-wave ones, all of which are consistent with recent nuclear-magnetic-resonance experiments [A. Pustogow et al., Nature 574, 72 (2019)]. The Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk theory is employed to calculate the tunneling conductance, and the cylindrical two-dimensional Fermi …
We perform tunneling spectroscopy of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ searching for the edge states peculiar to topological superconductivity. Conductance spectra obtained on Sr$_2$RuO$_4$/Au junctions fabricated using $in$ $situ$ process show broad humps indicating the successful detection of a-axis edge of 1.5K phase. Three types of peak shape are detected: domelike peak, split peak and two-step peak. By comparing the experiments with predictions for unconventional superconductivity, these varieties are shown to originate from multiband chiral p-wave symmetry with weak anisotropy of pair amplitude. The broad h…
We study the surface Andreev bound state (ABS) of superconducting Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, which is a candidate material for the realization of the chiral $p$-wave superconducting state. In order to clarify the role of chiral edge modes as ABSs, the surface density of states and the tunneling conductance is calculated in the normal metal/Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ junction within the framework of recursive Green's function method, while taking into account the orbital degrees of freedom (including Spin-Orbit interactions) with realistic material parameters. In Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, there are two bands $α$ and $β$ originati…
A theory of tunneling conductance spectra for normal metal/insulator/Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ junction is studied theoretically. We assume several types of pair potentials with triplet symmetries that are promising candidates for Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$. The calculated conductance spectra show either zero bias peaks or gap like structures depending on the orientations of the junctions. The existence of a residual components in the gap reflects a non-unitary property of the superconducting states. Based on the calculation of a temperature dependence, we will verify that the measurement temperature below 100…
Tunneling conductance spectra of normal metal/insulator/triplet superconductor junctions are investigated theoretically. As triplet paring states we select several types of symmetries that are promising candidates for the superconducting states in UPt$_{3}$ and in Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$. The calculated conductance spectra are sensitive to the orientation of the junction which reflects the anisotropy of the pairing states. They show either zero-bias conductance peaks or gap-like structures depending on the orientation of the junctions. The existence of a residual density of states, peculiar to nonun…
Superconductivity in Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ is unconventional, believed to be of $p_{x}\pm ip_{y}$ pairing symmetry. These two degenerate order parameters allow the formation of chiral domains separated by domain walls. In a Josephson junction formed on the edge of a single crystal of Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$, the chiral domains can create a variation of the phase in the tunneling direction causing interference effects which suppress and modulate the critical current of the junction. Cooling the junction in a magnetic field lifts the degeneracy between the order parameter states and induces a preferential…
We study the tunneling conductance of a ballistic normal metal / ferromagnet / spin-triplet superconductor junction using the extended Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk formalism as a model for a $c$-axis oriented Au / SrRuO$_{3}$ / Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ junction. We compare chiral $p$-wave (CPW) and helical $p$-wave (HPW) pair potentials, combined with ferromagnet magnetization directions parallel and perpendicular to the interface. For fixed $θ_{M}$, where $θ_{M}$ is a direction of magnetization in the ferromagnet measured from the $c$-axis, the tunneling conductance of CPW and HPW clearly show different…
A major challenge to the chiral $p$-wave hypothesis for the pairing symmetry of the unconventional superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is the null result of sensitive scanning magnetometry experiments designed to detect the expected spontaneous charge currents. Motivated by junction tunneling conductance measurements which indicate the quenching of superconductivity at the surfaces of even high-purity samples, we examine the spontaneous currents in a chiral $p$-wave superconductor near a normal metal / superconductor interface using the lattice Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations and Ginzburg-Landau theor…
We calculate the tunneling conductance spectra of a normal-metal/insulator/triplet superconductor using the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) formulation. Possible states for the superconductor are considered with horizontal lines of nodes, breaking the time reversal symmetry. These results would be useful to discriminate between pairing states in superonductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and also in UPt$_3$.
To establish the mechanism of unconventional superconductivity in Sr$_2$RUO$_4$, a prerequisite is direct information concerning the momentum-space structure of the energy gaps $Δ_i(k)$, and in particular whether the pairing strength is stronger ("dominant") on the quasi-1D ($α$ and $β$) or on the quasi-2D ($γ$) Fermi surfaces. We present scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements of the density-of-states spectra in the superconducting state of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ for $0.1 T_C<T<T_C$, and analyze them, along with published thermodynamic data, using a simple phenomenological model. We show that…
Differential resistance measurements are conducted for point contacts (PCs) between tungsten tip approaching along the $c$ axis direction and the $ab$ plane of Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ single crystal. Three key features are found. Firstly, within 0.2 mV there is a dome like conductance enhancement due to Andreev reflection at the normal-superconducting interface. By pushing the W tip further, the conductance enhancement increases from 3\% to more than 20\%, much larger than that was previously reported, probably due to the pressure exerted by the tip. Secondly, there are also superconducting like fea…
A theory for tunneling spectroscopy in normal metal /insulator/triplet superconductor junction is presented. We assume two kinds of non-unitary triplet superconducting states which are the most promising states for Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$. The calculated conductance spectra showzero-bias peaks as well as gap structures. The existences of residual components in the spectra reflect the non-unitary properties of superconducting states.
We calculate the tunneling conductance spectra of a normal metal / insulator / triplet superconductor from the reflection amplitudes using the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) formula. For the triplet superconductor we assume one special p-wave order parameter having line nodes and two two dimensional $f$-wave order parameters with line nodes breaking the time-reversal symmetry. Also we examine nodeless pairing potentials. The tunneling peaks are due to the formation of bound states for each surface orientation at discrete quasiparticles trajectory angles. The tunneling spectra can be used to di…
We report first measurements on tunneling into the {\it interior} of a Ru microdomain embedded in bulk chiral p-wave superconductor Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$. The junctions were prepared by pressing a pure In wire onto the ${\it{ab}}$ face of a Ru-containing Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ single crystal. Below the superconducting transition temperature ($T_{c}$) of Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ (= 1.5 K), we observed a zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) associated with the proximity-induced p-wave superconductivity. However, below 0.44 K, roughly the $T_{c}$ of bulk Ru (= 0.5 K), an unexpected Ru gap and a broad ZBCP superimpo…
The superconducting state of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ was once thought to be a leading candidate for $p$-wave superconductivity. A constant Knight shift below the transition temperature provided evidence for spin-triplet pairing, and a $π$ phase shift observed in Josephson junction tunneling experiments suggested odd-parity pairing, both of which are described by $p$-wave states. However, with recent experiments observing a significant decrease in the Knight shift below the transition temperature, signifying a spin-singlet state, the odd-parity results are left to be reconciled. In this work, we show tha…
We demonstrate that the feedback effect from bosonic excitations on fermions, which in the past allowed one to verify the phononic mechanism of a conventional, $s-$wave superconductivity, may also allow one to experimentally detect the ``fingerprints'' of the pairing mechanism in cuprates. We argue that for spin-mediated $d-$wave superconductivity, the fermionic spectral function, the density of states, the tunneling conductance through an insulating junction, and the optical conductivity are affected by the interaction with collective spin excitations, which below $T_c$ are propagating, magno…
Fine structures in the tunneling spectra of superconductors have been widely used to identify fingerprints of the interaction responsible for Cooper pairing. Here we show that for scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) of Pb, the inclusion of inelastic tunneling processes is crucial for the proper interpretation of these fine structures. For STM the usual McMillan inversion algorithm of tunneling spectra must therefore be modified to include inelastic tunneling events, an insight that is crucial for the identification of the pairing glue in conventional and unconventional superconductors alike.
We consider different effects that arise when time-reversal symmetry breaking superconductors are subjected to an external magnetic field, thus rendering the superconductor to be in the mixed state. We focus in particular on two time-reversal symmetry breaking order parameters which are believed to be realized in actual materials: $p+ıp'$-wave and $d+ıs$- or $d+ıd'$-wave. The first order parameter is relevant for Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, while the latter order parameters have been suggested to exist near surfaces in some of the high-$T_c$ cuprates. We investigate the interplay between surface states and…
We calculate the tunneling conductance spectra of a ferromagnetic metal / insulator / triplet superconductor from the reflection amplitudes using the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) formula. For the triplet superconductor, we assume one special $p$-wave order parameter, having line nodes, and two two dimensional $f$-wave order parameters with line nodes, breaking the time reversal symmetry. Also we examine nodeless pairing potentials. The evolution of the spectra with the exchange potential depends solely on the topology of the gap. The weak Andreev reflection within the ferromagnet results in …
We establish in a combination of ab initio theory and experiments that the tunneling process in scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy on the A-122 iron pnictide superconductors - in this case BaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ - involve a strong adatom filtering of the differential conductance from the near-EF Fe3d states, which in turn originates from the top-most sub-surface Fe layer of the crystal. The calculations show that the dominance of surface Ba-related tunneling pathways leaves fingerprints found in the experimental differential conductance data, including large particle-hole asymmetry a…
We investigated the low-energy incommensurate (IC) magnetic fluctuations in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ by the high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering measurements and random phase approximation (RPA) calculations. We observed a spin resonance with energy of $\hbarω_\text{res}=0.56$~meV centered at a characteristic wavevector $\mathbf{Q}_\text{res}=(0.3, 0.3, 0.5)$. The resonance energy corresponds well to the superconducting gap $2Δ=0.56$~meV estimated by the tunneling spectroscopy. The spin resonance shows the $L$ modulation with a maximum at around $L = 0.5$. The $L$ modulated intensity of the spin …
We theoretically study the charge conductance in anomalous Rashba metal (ARM)/superconductor junctions for various types of the pairing symmetries in the superconductor. The exotic state dubbed ARM, where one of the spin resolved Fermi surface is absent, is realized when the chemical potential is tuned both in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction (RSOI) and an exchange field. Although a fully polarized ferromagnet metal (FPFM) is also a system where the electron's spin degrees of a freedom is reduced to be half, the electrons in an ARM have distinct features from those in FPFM. For th…
The origin of Cooper pairing in high-temperature superconductors, such as the copper-oxide and iron-based system, is still under debate. High transition temperatures together with unconventional pairing states support the picture of an electronic pairing glue in the cuprates, where superconductivity is mediated by collective bosonic excitations of the electron fluid. In other materials, most importantly iron based systems with only hole or only electron pockets, the microscopic origin is hotly debated. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been shown to be a powerful experimental probe to de…
In conventional superconductors, magnetic impurities form an impurity band due to quantum interference of the impurity bound states, leading to suppression of the superconducting transition temperature. Such quantum interference effects can also be expected in d-wave superconductors. Here, we use scanning tunneling microscopy to investigate the effect of multiple non-magnetic impurities on the local electronic structure of the high-temperature superconductor Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$Ca(Cu$_{1-x}$Zn$_{x}$)$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$. We find several fingerprints of quantum interference of the impurity bound states …
The pairing mechanism in the iron pnictides remains unresolved yet. One of the central issues is the structure of the superconducting order parameter which classifies the community into two different and highly disputed camps. On one hand the picture of pairing based on the magnetic origin predicts a sign reversal gap on the electron and hole Fermi pockets, leading to the S+- pairing. On the other hand, a more conventional S++ pairing gap was suggested based on the phonon or orbital fluctuation mediated pairing. In the superconducting state, the impurities may generate a unique pattern of loca…
We present an angle resolved photoemission study of the surface and bulk electronic structure of the single layer ruthenate Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. As the early studies of its electronic structure by photoemission and scanning tunneling microscopy were confronted with a problem of surface reconstruction, surface aging was previously proposed as a possible remedy to access the bulk states. Here we suggest an alternative way by demonstrating that, in the case of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, circularly polarised light can be used to disentangle the signals from the bulk and surface layers, thus opening the possibility …
Ferromagnetic spin valves offer the key building blocks to integrate giant- and tunneling-magnetoresistance effects into spintronics devices. Starting from a generalized Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk approach, we theoretically investigate the impact of interfacial Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings on the tunneling conductance, and thereby the magnetoresistance characteristics, of ferromagnet/superconductor/ferromagnet spin-valve junctions embedding thin superconducting spacers between the either parallel or antiparallel magnetized ferromagnets. We focus on the unique interplay between usu…
Quasiparticle interference (QPI) imaging of Bogoliubov excitations in quasi-two dimensional unconventional superconductors has become a powerful technique for measuring the superconducting gap and its symmetry. Here, we present the extension of this method to three-dimensional superconductors and analyze the expected QPI spectrum for the two-component heavy fermion superconductor UPt$_3$ whose gap structure is still controversial. Starting from a 3D electronic structure and the three proposed chiral gap models $E_{1g,u}$ or $E_{2u}$, we perform a slab calculation that determines the 2D continu…
Tunneling conductance in ferromagnet / unconventional superconductor junctions is studied theoretically as a function of temperatures and spin-polarization in feromagnets. In d-wave superconductor junctions, the existence of a zero-energy Andreev bound state drastically affects the temperature-dependence of the zero-bias conductance (ZBC). In p-wave triplet superconductor junctions, numerical results show a wide variety in temperature-dependence of the ZBC depending on the direction of the magnetic moment in ferromagnets and the pairing symmetry in superconductors such as $p_{x}$, $p_{y}$ and …
We investigate theoretically how the proximity effect in superconductor/ferromagnet hybrid structures with intrinsic spin-orbit coupling manifests in the density of states and critical temperature. To describe a general scenario, we allow for both Rashba and Dresselhaus type spin-orbit coupling. Our results are obtained via the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity, extended to include spin-orbit coupling in the Usadel equation and Kupriyanov--Lukichev boundary conditions. Unlike previous works, we have derived a Riccati parametrization of the Usadel equation with spin-orbit coupling whic…
We explore a $Z_{2}$ fractionalized Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superconducting state, which is a minimal extension of usual BCS framework. It is found that this state has similar thermal and transport properties, but its single-particle feature strongly deviates from the coherent quasiparticle behavior of the classic/conventional BCS superconducting state. The fingerprint of such $Z_{2}$ BCS state is the absence of the BCS coherent peaks and instead a kink in the local density of state occurs, which in principle could be probed by scanning tunneling microscopy or point-contact spectroscop…
