We find a new analytical solution for the chemical evolution equations, taking into account the delayed contribution of all low and intermediate mass stars (LIMS) as one representative star that enriches the interstellar medium. This solution is built only for star formation rate proportional to the gas mass in a closed box model. We obtain increasing C/O and N/O ratios with increasing O/H, behavior impossible to match with the Instantaneous Recycling Approximation (IRA). Our results, obtained by two analytical equations, are very similar to those found by numerical models that consider the lifetimes of each star. This delayed model reproduces successfully the evolution of C/O-O/H and Y-O relations in the solar vicinity. This analytical approximation is a useful tool to study the chemical evolution of elements produced by LIMS when a galactic chemical evolutionary code is not available.
It now becomes possible to perform multiphase studies of the ISM from hot to molecular phases. HI and HII in star--forming gas-rich galaxies seem to exhibit differences in their metal composition in the sense that HII is less enriched in nitrogen, argon and possibly oxygen than the HII ionized gas. This observational evidence needs to be confirmed on larger sample and yet remains difficult to intepret. We review some possible interpretations. If, on the other hand, metals remain for a long time in hot gas they might ultimately cool down and mix with the original interstellar medium rather than…
We report the results of our project devoted to study the chemical enrichment history of the field population in the Magellanic Clouds using Ca II triplet spectroscopy.
Studies of damped Lyman-alpha absorption systems in quasar spectra are yielding very interesting results regarding the chemical evolution of these galaxies. We present some preliminary results from such a program.
We present evidence that damped Lyman-alpha galaxies detected in spectra of quasars may not have started forming stars until the redshift z~3. If damped Lyman-alpha absorbers are the progenitors of disk galaxies, then the above result may indicate that star formation in galactic disks first began at z~3.
We simulate cosmic chemical enrichment with a hydrodynamical model including supernova and hypernova feedback. We find that the majority of stars in present-day massive galaxies formed in much smaller galaxies at high redshifts, despite their late assembly times. The hypernova feedback drives galactic outflows efficiently in low mass galaxies, and these winds eject heavy elements into the intergalactic medium. The ejected baryon fraction is larger for less massive galaxies, correlates well with stellar metallicity. The observed mass-metallicity relation is well reproduced as a result of the ma…
We present cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy clusters aimed at studying the process of metal enrichment of the intra--cluster medium (ICM). These simulations have been performed by implementing a detailed model of chemical evolution in the Tree-SPH \gd code. This model allows us to follow the metal release from SNII, SNIa and AGB stars, by properly accounting for the lifetimes of stars of different mass, as well as to change the stellar initial mass function (IMF), the lifetime function and the stellar yields. As such, our implementation of chemical evolution represents a power…
Recent advances in stellar population modelling and avalanches of data from mega-surveys have revived the interest in techniques to extract information about galaxy evolution from integrated spectra. This contribution provides an informal and (hopefully) pedagogical, but inevitably biased and incomplete introduction to this field. Emphasis is given to the several choices one has to make in the process of modelling galaxy spectra.
Two aspects of the chemical evolution of 4He in the Galaxy are considered on the basis of a sample of disk planetary nebulae by the application of corrections due to the contamination of 4He from the progenitor stars. First, the He/H radial gradient is analyzed, and then, the helium to heavy element enrichment ratio is determined for metallicities up to the solar value.
We discuss a model for treating chemical enrichment by SNII and SNIa explosions in simulations of cosmological structure formation. Our model includes metal-dependent radiative cooling and star formation in dense collapsed gas clumps. Metals are returned into the diffuse interstellar medium by star particles using a local SPH smoothing kernel. A variety of chemical abundance patterns in enriched gas arise in our treatment owing to the different yields and lifetimes of SNII and SNIa progenitor stars. In the case of SNII chemical production, we adopt metal-dependent yields. Because of the sensit…
A population number synthesis code follows in detail the evolution of a population of single stars and of close binaries. We use our code to simulate the population of neutron star - neutron star and black hole - neutron star binaries. We then combine our population number synthesis code with a galactic chemical evolutionary model in order to follow the time evolution of the formation and merger rate of these double compact star binaries and the resulting chemical enrichment of r-process elements, over the whole Galactic lifetime. It can be concluded that the neutron star/black hole merger pro…
We present theoretical evolutionary models for Z=0 stars in the mass range 4< M/Mo <8 from the pre-main sequence up to the AGB phase. Contrary to previous calculations we found that these stars develop normal thermal pulses and third dredge-up episodes. Special attention is devoted to analyze the chemical enrichment in the envelope due to the above mechanisms. As a consequence, we show that these stars become carbon and nitrogen rich. Using different IMFs proposed in the literature for the Population III stars, we study their contribution to the pre-galactic chemical enrichment. It is found th…
We investigate the origin of the abundance variations observed among similarly aged F and G dwarfs in the local Galactic disk. We present arguments in support of combined infall of metal-deficient gas and sequential enrichment by successive stellar generations in the local Galactic disk ISM. We show that galactic chemical evolution models which take into account these processes simultaneously are consistent with both the observed abundance variations among similarly aged dwarfs in the solar neighbourhood and the abundances observed in the local disk ISM. For reasonable choices of parameters, t…
Many globular cluster systems have a distinct bimodal metallicity distribution function (MDF) which has strikingly similar features in many large galaxies of all types. By using the Milky Way cluster system as a typical example, we show that bimodal MDFs can be very well matched with a double ``accreting-box'' chemical enrichment model in which both the halo (metal-poor) and bulge (metal-rich) clusters form during an early phase of gas inflow simultaneously with star formation. However, differences in effective yield between the two phases are not enough by themselves to reproduce the observed…
We present deep ground-based {\it B} and {\it R} observations of 12 fields in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The resulting color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) reach the oldest main-sequence (MS) turnoff at M$_{R}$$\thicksim$3.5 and reveal the stellar population differences between the part of the galaxy facing the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and an area on the opposite side. In the Southern part of the galaxy, we found that there are still intermediate-age stars as far as 4 kpc from the SMC center. The Chemical Enrichment History (CEH) in one of our SMC fields is also presented.
We review observations on the chemical enrichment of the intracluster medium (ICM) performed using BeppoSAX MECS data. The picture emerging is that non-cooling flow clusters have flat metallicity profiles, whereas a strong enhancement in the abundance is found in the central regions of the cooling flow clusters. All the non-cooling flow clusters present evidence of recent merger activity suggesting that the merger events redistributes efficiently the metal content of the ICM. The observed abundance excess in the central regions of cooling flow clusters is probably due to metals ejected from th…
The warm ionized gas in low-mass, metal-poor starforming galaxies is chemically homogeneous despite the prevalence of large H II regions which contain hundreds of evolved massive stars, supernovae, and Wolf-Rayet stars with chemically-enriched winds. Galaxies with large Wolf-Rayet star content are chemically indistinguishable from other vigorously star-forming galaxies. Furthermore, no significant localized chemical fluctuations are present in the vicinity of young star clusters, despite large expected chemical yields of massive stars. An ad-hoc fine-tuning of the release, dispersal and mixing…
In this paper we show preliminary results concerning the chemical and energetic enrichment of the ICM by means of supernova-driven wind models in elliptical galaxies. These models are obtained by taking into account new prescriptions about supernova remnant evolution in the interstellar medium. We find that models, which can reproduce the Fe abundance and the [$α$/Fe] ratios observed in the ICM, predict that the SN energy input can provide about 0.3 keV per ICM particle. We have obtained this result by assuming that each SN explosion inject on the average into the ISM no more than 20% of its i…
We present a longslit optical spectrophotometric survey in the irregular "post-starburst" galaxy NGC 1569 to search for chemical gradients and inhomogeneities in the interstellar medium. Despite the presence of two massive evolved starclusters and numerous HII regions, we find no evidence for chemical gradients or inhomogeneities that may be attributed to enrichment from the recent star formation activity. The chemical properties are consistent with 12+log(O/H)=8.19+/-0.04 and log(N/O)=-1.40+/-0.05 at all locations. No localized chemical self-enrichment ("pollution") from massive star evolutio…
It is clear from stellar evolution and from observations of WR stars that massive stars are releasing metal-enriched gas through their stellar winds in the Wolf-Rayet phase. Although HII region spectra serve as diagnostics to determine the present-day chemical composition of the interstellar medium, it is far from being understood to what extent the HII gas is already contaminated by chemically processed stellar wind. Therefore, we analyzed our models of radiative and wind bubbles of an isolated 85 Msun star with solar metallicity (Kröger et al. 2006) with respect to the chemical enrichment of…
We explore the contribution of intracluster stars (ICS) to the chemical enrichment history of the intracluster medium (ICM). In contrast to scenarios in which all the metals originate in cluster galaxies and are then transported into the ICM, intracluster stars enrich the ICM in situ, thereby contributing 100% of their supernovae ejecta directly into the ICM. Modeling the ICS as an ancient, single burst stellar population with a normal initial mass function, we generate ICM iron abundances in the range of the observed values of several tenths solar. Large observational and theoretical uncertai…
The recent discovery of a hyper metal-poor (HMP) star, whose metallicity Fe/H is smaller than 1/100,000 of the solar ratio, together with one earlier HMP star, has raised a challenging question if these HMP stars are the actual first generation, low mass stars in the Universe. We argue that these HMP stars are the second generation stars being formed from gases which were chemically enriched by the first generation supernovae. The key to this solution is the very unusual abundance patterns of these HMP stars with important similarities and differences. We can reproduce these abundance features…
We present stellar metallicities derived from Ca II triplet spectroscopy in over 350 red giant branch stars in 13 fields distributed in different positions in the SMC, ranging from $\sim$1\arcdeg\@ to $\sim$4\arcdeg\@ from its center. In the innermost fields the average metallicity is [Fe/H] $\sim -1$. This value decreases when we move away towards outermost regions. This is the first detection of a metallicity gradient in this galaxy. We show that the metallicity gradient is related to an age gradient, in the sense that more metal-rich stars, which are also younger, are concentrated in the ce…
The results, obtained with evolutionary synthesis code package, developed by the author, for spectral properties of stellar populations with different initial metallicities Z, are presented and discussed . Also, their contributions to the production of most common nucleosynthesis elements He, C and O were followed. These computations have been performed on the basis of two available but different homogeneous multicomposition stellar evolutionary tracks grids by Geneva and Padova groups and the Kurucz model atmospheres. Next to the discussion of overall effects and evelutionary differences, cau…
We use cosmological hydrodynamical simulations including star formation and metal enrichment to study the evolution of the chemical properties of galaxy-like objects at high redshift in the range $0.25<z< 2.35$ in a hierarchical clustering scenario. As the galactic objects are assembled we find that their gaseous components exhibit neutral Hydrogen column densities with abundances and scatter comparable to those observed in damped Lyman-$α$ systems (DLAs).The unweighted mean of abundance ratios and least square linear regressions through the simulated DLAs yield intrinsic metallicity evolution…
We combine spectroscopic metallicity values with integrated narrowband continuum colors to explore the internal metallicity distribution in early-type galaxies. The different techniques for determining metallicity (indices versus colors) allows for an estimate of the contribution from metal-poor stars in a predominantly metal-rich population which, in turn, places constraints on the shape and width of a galaxy's metallicity distribution function (MDF). The color-spectroscopic data is compared to the closed box, infall and inhomogeneous chemical evolution models. The G-dwarf problem, a deficien…
An early history of metal enrichment in the Galactic halo is studied. We investigate chemical inhomogeneity by using a stochastic chemical evolution model. The model confronts with metallicity distribution function of long-lived halo stars which is found to be a clue to obtain the best model prescriptions. We find that the star formation in the halo virtually terminated by around 1 Gyr and that the halo has never been chemically homogeneous in its star formation history. This conclusion does not depend whether mass loss from the halo is taken into account or not. Observed ratios of alpha-eleme…
Chemical compositions are derived from high-resolution spectra for five field SRd variables. These supergiants not previously analysed are shown to be metal-poor: KK Aql with [Fe/H] = -1.2, AG Aur with [Fe/H] = -1.8, Z Aur with [Fe/H] = -1.4, W LMi with [Fe/H] = -1.1, and WW Tau with [Fe/H] = -1.1. Their compositions are, except for two anomalies, identical to within the measurement errors with the compositions of subdwarfs, subgiants, and less evolved giants of the same [Fe/H]. One anomaly is an s-process enrichment for KK Aql, the first such enrichment reported for a SRd variable. The second…
We studied the chemical enrichment of the interstellar medium and stellar population of the building blocks of current typical galaxies in the field, in cosmological hydrodynamics simulations. The simulations include detail modeling of chemical enrichment by SNIa and SNII. In our simulations the metal missing problem is caused by chemical elements being locked upon in the central regions (or bulges) mainly, in stars. Supernova energy feedback could help to reduce this concentration by expelling metals to the intergalactic medium.
A simple chemical enrichment model for cluster early-type galaxies is described in which the mechanisms considered in the evolutionary model are infall of primordial gas, outflows and a possible variation in the star formation efficiency. We find that - within the framework of our models - only outflows can generate a suitable range of metallicities. The chemical enrichment tracks can be combined with the latest population synthesis models to simulate clusters over a wide redshift range, for a set of toy models. The color-magnitude relation of local clusters is used as a constraint, fixing the…
AIMS: We spectroscopically characterize the Galactic Bulge to infer its star formation timescale, compared to the other Galactic components, through the chemical signature on its individual stars. METHODS: We derived iron and oxygen abundances for 50 K giants in four fields towards the Galactic bulge. High resolution (R=45,000) spectra for the target stars were collected with FLAMES-UVES at the VLT. RESULTS: Oxygen, as measured from the forbidden line at 6300 Å, shows a well-defined trend with [Fe/H], with [O/Fe] higher in bulge stars than in thick disk ones, which were known to be more oxygen…
In this paper, we present a model of the formation and chemical enrichment of elliptical galaxies that differs from the conventional picture in two ways: 1)Ellipticals do not form in a single monolithic collapse and burst of star formation at high redshift. Instead, most of their stars form at modest rates in disk galaxies, which then merge to form the ellipticals. 2)Galaxies do not undergo closed-box chemical evolution. Instead, metals can be transferred between the stars, cold gas and the hot gas halos of the galaxies. It is assumed that metals are ejected out of disk galaxies during superno…
We explore the mass-assembly and chemical enrichment histories of star forming galaxies by applying a population synthesis method to a sample of 84828 galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5. Our method decomposes the entire observed spectrum in terms of a sum of simple stellar populations spanning a wide range of ages and metallicities, thus allowing the reconstruction of galaxy histories. A comparative study of galaxy evolution is presented, where galaxies are grouped onto bins of nebular abundances or mass. We find that galaxies whose warm interstellar medium is poor in he…
Elliptical galaxies are often assumed to be the primary source of heavy elements in the intracluster medium (ICM), with the contribution of other morphological types being negligible. In this paper we argue that a role of spiral galaxies in the chemical evolution of the ICM is also important. This statement rests upon our recent calculations of the heavy element loss from a disk galaxy through the hot steady-state galactic wind and dust grains expulsion by stellar radiation pressure. We show that a typical disk galaxy is nearly as effective in enriching the ICM as an elliptical galaxy of the s…
We present an analysis of the properties of the hot interstellar medium (ISM) in the merging pair of galaxies known as The Antennae (NGC 4038/39), performed using the deep, coadded ~411 ks Chandra ACIS-S data set. These deep X-ray observations and Chandra's high angular resolution allow us to investigate the properties of the hot ISM with unprecedented spatial and spectral resolution. Through a spatially resolved spectral analysis, we find a variety of temperatures (from 0.2 to 0.7 keV) and Nh (from Galactic to 2x10^21 cm^-2). Metal abundances for Ne, Mg, Si, and Fe vary dramatically throughou…
We have developed a new galactic chemo-dynamical evolution code, called GCD+, for studies of galaxy formation and evolution. This code is based on our original three-dimensional tree N-body/smoothed particle hydrodynamics code which includes self-gravity, hydrodynamics, radiative cooling, star formation, supernova feedback, and metal enrichment. GCD+ includes a new Type II (SNe II) and Ia (SNe Ia) supernovae model taking into account the lifetime of progenitor stars, and chemical enrichment from intermediate mass stars. We apply GCD+ to simulations of elliptical galaxy formation, and examine t…
The study of the metal enrichment of the intra-cluster and inter-galactic media (ICM and IGM) represents a direct means to reconstruct the past history of star formation, the role of feedback processes and the gas-dynamical processes which determine the evolution of the cosmic baryons. In this paper we review the approaches that have been followed so far to model the enrichment of the ICM in a cosmological context. While our presentation will be focused on the role played by hydrodynamical simulations, we will also discuss other approaches based on semi-analytical models of galaxy formation, a…
New detailed stellar yields of several elemental species are derived for massive stars in a wide range of masses (from 6 to 120 Msol) and metallicities (Z= 0.0004, 0.004, 0.008, 0.02, 0.05). Our calculations are based on the Padova evolutionary tracks and take into account recent results on stellar evolution, such as overshooting and quiescent mass-loss, paying major attention to the effects of the initial chemical composition of the star. We finally include modern results on explosive nucleosynthesis in SNae by Woosley & Weaver 1995. The issue of the chemical yields of Very Massive Objects (f…
(Abridged) We use a combination of high resolution N-body simulations and semi-analytic techniques to follow the formation, the evolution and the chemical enrichment of cluster galaxies in a Lambda-CDM Universe. We model the transport of metals between the stars, the cold gas in galaxies, the hot gas in dark matter haloes, and the intergalactic gas outside virialized haloes. We have compared three different feedback schemes. The `retention' model assumes that material reheated by supernova explosions is able to leave the galaxy, but not the dark matter halo. The `ejection' model assumes that t…
A stochastic model of the chemical enrichment of metal-poor systems by core-collapse (Type II) supernovae is presented, allowing for large-scale mixing of the enriched material by turbulent motions and cloud collisions in the interstellar medium. Infall of pristine material is taken into account by following the evolution of the gas density in the medium. Analytical expressions were derived for the number of stars enriched by a given number of supernovae, as well as for the amount of mass with which the ejected material from a supernova is mixed before being locked up in a subsequently formed …
We have tried to understand the recent observations related to metallicity in Ly $α$ forest clouds in the framework of the two component model suggested by Chiba & Nath (1997). We find that even if the mini-halos were chemically enriched by an earlier generation of stars, to have [C/H] $\simeq$ -2.5, the number of C IV lines with column density $>10^{12} cm^{-2}$, contributed by the mini-halos, at the redshift of 3, would be only about 10% of the total number of lines, for a chemical enrichment rate of $(1+z)^{-3}$ in the galaxies. Recently reported absence of heavy element lines associated wi…
We develop a model for the metal enrichment of the intracluster medium (ICM) that combines a cosmological non-radiative hydrodynamical N-Body/SPH simulation of a cluster of galaxies, and a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. The novel feature of our hybrid model is that the chemical properties of the diffuse gas in the underlying simulation are dynamically and consistently generated from stars in the galaxies. We follow the production of several chemical elements, provided by low- and intermediate-mass stars, core collapse and type Ia supernovae. We analyse the spatial distribution of met…
The virial mass ($M_{\rm vir}$)-metallicity relation among the Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) is examined. Hirashita, Takeuchi, & Tamura showed that the dSphs can be divided into two distinct classes with respect to the relation between their virial masses and luminosities: low-mass ($M_{\rm vir} \la 10^8 M_\odot$) and high-mass ($M_{\rm vir} \ga 10^8 M_\odot$) groups. We see that both the mass-metallicity and the mass-luminosity relations of the high-mass dSphs are understood as a low-mass extension of giant ellipticals. On the contrary, we find that the classical galactic-wind…
Using Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet and ground-based optical spectroscopy, we measure the C/O and N/O ratios of three metal-poor galaxies with similar metallicity but differing N/O. The C/O ratios estimated from C III] lambda1909 and [O III] lambda5007 lines are consistent with those measured from C II] lambda2326 and [O II] lambda3727 lines. We develop the use of the C^+/O^+ ratio as a reasonable substitute diagnostic of the carbon abundance in HII regions. The proximity of the C II] lambda2326 multiplet to the [O II] lambda3726,3729 lines makes these transitions a potential tool for mea…
Damped Lyman-alpha absorption systems found in the spectra of high redshift quasars are believed to trace the interstellar gas in high redshift galaxies. In this paper, we study the elemental abundances of C, N, O, Al, Si, S, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, and Zn in a sample of 14 damped Lyman-alpha systems using high quality echelle spectra of quasars obtained with the 10m Keck telescope. These abundances are combined with similar measurements in the literature in order to investigate the chemical evolution of damped Lyman-alpha galaxies in the redshift range 0.7<z<4.4. Among the things investigated are: th…
In this paper the role of very massive pop III stars in the chemical enrichment of the early universe is discussed. We first compare our predictions with the abundance ratios measured in the high redshift Lyman-alpha forest to check whether they are compatible with the values predicted by assuming that the early universe was enriched by massive pop III stars. We conclude that to explain the observed C/Si ratio in the intergalactic medium, a contribution from pop II stars to carbon enrichment is necessary, already at redshift z=5. We then evaluate the number of Pair-Instability Supernovae (SN_(…
Using a new numerical model for cosmic chemical evolution, we study the influence of hypernova feedback on the star formation and metal enrichment history of the universe. For assumptions which produce plausible results in idealized collapse models of individual galaxies, our cosmological simulations of the standard Lambda-CDM cosmology show a peak of the cosmic star formation rate at z~4, with ~10% of the baryons turning into stars. We find that the majority of stars in present-day massive galaxies formed in much smaller galaxies at high redshifts, giving them a mean stellar age as old as 10 …
The time-scales of chemical enrichment are fundamental to understand the evolution of abundances and abundance ratios in galaxies. In particular, the time-scales for the enrichment by SNe II and SNe Ia are crucial in interpreting the evolution of abundance ratios such as [alpha/Fe]. In fact, the alpha-elements are produced mainly by SNe II on time-scales of the order of 3 to 30 Myr, whereas the Fe is mainly produced by SNe Ia on a larger range of time-scales, going from 30 Myr to a Hubble time. This produces differences in the [alpha/Fe] ratios at high and low redshift and it is known as "time…
We investigate chemical enrichment in Damped Lyman alpha (DLA) systems in the hierarchical structure formation scenario using a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. The model developed by Nagashima, Totani, Gouda and Yoshii takes into account various selection effects on high-redshift galaxies and can show fundamental observational properties of galaxies, such as luminosity functions and number-magnitude/redshift relations. DLA systems offer the possibilities of measuring metal abundance more accurately than faint galaxies. For example, recent measurements of zinc abundance can provide goo…
High resolution (R > 40 000) and high S/N spectra have been acquired with UVES on the VLT-Kueyen (Paranal Observatory, ESO Chile) for several main sequence turnoff stars (V ~ 17 mag) and subgiants at the base of the Red Giant Branch (V ~ 16 mag) in three globular clusters (NGC 6397, NGC 6752 and 47 Tuc/NGC 104) at different metallicities (respectively [Fe/H] = -2.0; -1.5; -0.7$). Spectra for a sample of 25 field halo subdwarves have also been taken with equal resolution, but higher S/N. These data have been used to determine the abundances of several neutron-capture elements in these three clu…
I review the observational characteristics of intermediate-to-high redshift star forming galaxies, including their star formation rates, dust extinctions, ISM kinematics, and chemical compositions. I present evidence that the mean rate of metal enrichment, Delta{Z}/Delta{z}, from z=0--3, as determined from nebular oxygen abundance measurements in star forming galaxies, is 0.15 dex per redshift unit for galaxies more luminous than M_B=-20.5. This rate of chemical enrichment is consistent with the chemical rise in Galactic disk stars. It is less dramatic than, but perhaps consistent with, the en…
We compute the chemical and thermal history of the intra-cluster medium in rich and poor clusters under the assumption that supernovae (I, II) are the major responsible both for the chemical enrichment and the heating of the intra-cluster gas. We assume that only ellipticals and S0 galaxies contribute to the enrichment and heating of the intra-cluster gas through supernova driven winds and explore several prescriptions for describing the feed-back between supernovae and the interstellar medium in galaxies. We integrate then the chemical and energetical contributions from single cluster galaxie…
We present chemical evolution models for the Galactic disk. We also present a new determination of X, Y, and Z for M17 a Galactic metal-rich Hii region. We compare our models for the Galactic disk with the Galactic Hii regions abundances. The $ΔY/ΔO$ ratio predicted from the galactic chemical evolution model is in very good agreement with the $ΔY/ΔO$ value derived from M17 and the primordial helium abundance, Yp, taking into account the presence of temperature variations in this Hii region. From the M17 observations we obtain that $ΔY/ΔZ = 1.97 \pm 0.41$, in excellent agreement with two $ΔY/ΔZ…
It is frequently debated in literature whether a "standard" Initial Mass Function (IMF) - meaning an IMF of the kind usually adopted to explain the chemical evolution in the local Solar Neighbourhood - can account for the observed metal enrichment and Iron Mass-to-Light Ratio in clusters of galaxies. We address this problem by means of straightforward estimates that should hold independently of the details of chemical evolution models. It is crucial to compute self-consistently the amount of mass and metals locked-up in stars, by accounting for the stellar mass-to-light ratio predicted by a gi…
We have detected the [S IV] 10.5 micron and [Ne II] 12.8 micron fine-structure lines in the halo population planetary nebula (PN) DdDm 1, and set upper limits on their intensities in the halo PN H 4-1. We also present new measurements of optical lines from various ions of S, Ne, O, and H for DdDm 1, based on a high-dispersion spectrum covering the spectral range 3800 A to 1 micron. These nebulae have similar O/H abundances, (O/H) = 1e-4, but S/H and Ne/H are about half an order of magnitude lower in H 4-1 than in DdDm 1; thus H 4-1 appears to belong to a more metal-poor population. This suppor…
A chromospheric age distribution of 552 late-type dwarfs is transformed into a star formation history by the application of scale height corrections, stellar evolutionary corrections and volume corrections. We show that the disk of our Galaxy has experienced enhanced episodes of star formation at 0-1 Gyr, 2-5 Gyr and 7-9 Gyr ago, although the reality of the latter burst is still uncertain. The star sample birthsites are distributed over a very large range of distances because of orbital diffusion, and so give an estimate of the global star formation rate. These results are compared with the me…
A stochastic model of the chemical enrichment of metal-poor systems by core-collapse supernovae is used to study the scatter in stellar abundance ratios. The resulting scatter in abundance ratios, e.g. as functions of the overall metallicity, is demonstrated to be crucially dependent on the as yet uncertain supernovae yields. The observed abundance ratios and their scatters therefore have diagnostic power as regards the yields. The relatively small star-to-star scatter observed in many chemical abundance ratios, e.g. by Cayrel et al. (2004) for stars down to [Fe/H] = -4, is tentatively explain…
We perform three-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations in a realistic cosmological setting to investigate the expansion, feedback, and chemical enrichment properties of a 200 M_sun pair-instability supernova in the high-redshift universe. We find that the SN remnant propagates for a Hubble time at z = 20 to a final mass-weighted mean shock radius of 2.5 kpc (proper), roughly half the size of the HII region, and in this process sweeps up a total gas mass of 2.5*10^5 M_sun. The morphology of the shock becomes highly anisotropic once it leaves the host halo and encounters filame…
Observations of the stellar content of the bulge of the Milky Way can provide critical guidelines for the interpretation of observations of distant galaxies, in particular for understanding their stellar content and evolution. In this brief overview I will first highlight some recent work directed towards measuring the history of star formation and the chemical composition of the central few parsecs of the Galaxy. These observations point to an episodic history of star formation in the central region with several bursts having occurred over the past few 100 Myr (e.g. Blum et al. 1996b). High r…
I study the effect of the galaxies of the Milky Way subgroup on the chemical enrichment of the diffuse gas within the Local Group. The preferred model predicts that the present-day intergalactic medium mass is 1/22 of the initial baryonic mass and its metallicity is 1/20 $Z_\odot$. Nearly 80 % of intergalactic metals were produced in the Galactic bulge.
We present 2D axisymmetric hydrodynamic simulations investigating the long term effect of FR II radio galaxies on the metal distribution of the surrounding intra-cluster medium (ICM). A light jet is injected into a cooling flow atmosphere for 10-30 Myr. We then follow the subsequent evolution for 3 Gyr on a spherical grid spanning 3 Mpc in radius. A series of passive tracer particles were placed in an annulus about the cluster core to simulate metal carrying clouds in order to calculate the metallicity (Z) as a function of time and radial distance from the cluster centre. The jet has a signifi…
