We combine spectroscopic metallicity values with integrated narrowband continuum colors to explore the internal metallicity distribution in early-type galaxies. The different techniques for determining metallicity (indices versus colors) allows for an estimate of the contribution from metal-poor stars in a predominantly metal-rich population which, in turn, places constraints on the shape and width of a galaxy's metallicity distribution function (MDF). The color-spectroscopic data is compared to the closed box, infall and inhomogeneous chemical evolution models. The G-dwarf problem, a deficiency in metal-poor stars as compared to closed box models, is evident in the dataset and indicates this deficiency is common to all early-type galaxies. However, even simple infall models predict galaxy colors which are too blue compared to the observations. A simple analytic model is proposed which matches the elliptical data and recent HST observations of M31 (Worthey et al 2005) and NGC 5128 (Harris & Harris 2000) by reducing the number of metal-poor stars in a systematic fashion. While without physical justification, the shape of these models are similar to predictions of inhomogeneous enrichment scenarios.
Hot, X-ray emitting gaseous halos around massive elliptical galaxies are a result of both stellar mass loss and inflow toward the overdensity from which giant ellipticals and their associated galaxy groups formed. The metal abundance in this gas contains important information about early star formation and past supernova activity. We find that Type II supernovae based on a Salpeter IMF, plus a small number of additional Type Ia supernovae, can explain the the density, temperature and abundance profiles currently observed in gaseous halos around massive ellipticals. Within the central, opticall…
We investigate the metal enrichment of elliptical galaxies in the framework of hierarchical models of galaxy formation. The semi-analytical model we use in this Letter, which has been used to study the metal enrichment of the intracluster medium (ICM) by Nagashima et al., includes the effects of flows of gas and metals both into and out of galaxies and the processes of metal enrichment due to both type Ia and type II supernovae. We adopt a solar neighbourhood IMF for star formation in discs, but consider models in which starbursts have either a solar neighbourhood IMF or a top-heavy IMF. We fi…
In this paper, we present a model of the formation and chemical enrichment of elliptical galaxies that differs from the conventional picture in two ways: 1)Ellipticals do not form in a single monolithic collapse and burst of star formation at high redshift. Instead, most of their stars form at modest rates in disk galaxies, which then merge to form the ellipticals. 2)Galaxies do not undergo closed-box chemical evolution. Instead, metals can be transferred between the stars, cold gas and the hot gas halos of the galaxies. It is assumed that metals are ejected out of disk galaxies during superno…
A detailed model of galactic evolution is proposed to explain both the iron content of the Intra-Cluster Medium (ICM) and of the ellipticals pertaining to the cluster. SNII are responsible for the production of Fe in the galaxies and of its partial ejection in the surrounding medium. A high formation rate of massive stars only ($m>3~{\rm M_{\sun}}$) at the very early stage of evolution of ellipticals, reminiscent of starburst galaxies, is advocated. The high rate of SNII explosions induces a powerful galactic wind, followed by a more quiescent evolution where stars are formed, with a normal In…
Models of SN driven galactic winds for ellipticals are presented. We assume that ellipticals formed at high redshift and suffered an intense burst of star formation. The role of supernovae of type II and Ia in the chemical enrichment and in triggering galactic winds is studied. In particular, several recipes for SN feed-back together with detailed nucleosynthesis prescriptions are considered. It is shown that SNe of type II have a dominant role in enriching the interstellar medium of elliptical galaxies whereas type Ia SNe dominate the enrichment and the energetics of the intracluster medium.
The enrichment of the intracluster medium (ICM) of galaxy clusters, within the framework of the supernovae-driven wind model for elliptical galaxies, has been considered under two extreme assumptions regarding the binding energy-mass-radius relations. Unless the binding energy at the time of wind commencement, for a given galactic mass, was a factor of approximately five lower than that predicted by the present-day relation, at most 20% of the ICM gas could have originated within the cluster ellipticals themselves, the remainder being of primordial origin.
We present the analysis of the coadded rest-frame UV spectrum (1200<z<2000 A) of five K-luminous galaxies at z~2 from the K20 survey. The composite spectrum is characterized by strong absorption lines over the UV continuum from C, N, O, Al, Si, and Fe in various ionization stages. While some of these lines are interstellar, several among the strongest absorptions are identified with stellar photospheric lines. Most of the photospheric and interstellar features are stronger in the K-luminous composite spectrum than in LBGs at z~3. This suggests higher metallicity and possibly also larger inters…
Elliptical galaxies are often assumed to be the primary source of heavy elements in the intracluster medium (ICM), with the contribution of other morphological types being negligible. In this paper we argue that a role of spiral galaxies in the chemical evolution of the ICM is also important. This statement rests upon our recent calculations of the heavy element loss from a disk galaxy through the hot steady-state galactic wind and dust grains expulsion by stellar radiation pressure. We show that a typical disk galaxy is nearly as effective in enriching the ICM as an elliptical galaxy of the s…
We have developed a new galactic chemo-dynamical evolution code, called GCD+, for studies of galaxy formation and evolution. This code is based on our original three-dimensional tree N-body/smoothed particle hydrodynamics code which includes self-gravity, hydrodynamics, radiative cooling, star formation, supernova feedback, and metal enrichment. GCD+ includes a new Type II (SNe II) and Ia (SNe Ia) supernovae model taking into account the lifetime of progenitor stars, and chemical enrichment from intermediate mass stars. We apply GCD+ to simulations of elliptical galaxy formation, and examine t…
We present a new model for the chemical evolution of elliptical galaxies taking into account SN feedback, detailed nucleosynthesis and galactic winds. We discuss the effect of galactic winds on the chemical enrichment of the ICM and compute the energy per particle injected by the galaxies into the ICM.
We follow the chemical evolution of a galaxy through star formation and its feedback into the inter-stellar medium, starting from primordial gas and allowing for gas to inflow into the region being modelled. We attempt to reproduce observed spectral line-strengths for early-type galaxies to constrain their star formation histories. The efficiencies and times of star formation are varied as well as the amount and duration of inflow. We evaluate the chemical enrichment and the mass of stars made with time. Single stellar population (SSP) data are then used to predict line-strengths for composite…
We examined the physical origin of the colour-magnitude relation of elliptical galaxies in clusters of galaxies in the hierarchical clustering scenario by using a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. We particularly investigate the effects of the star formation process, the supernova feedback and the UV background on the formation and evolution of elliptical galaxies. It is suggested by observation that the colour-magnitude relation reflects the metallicity-luminosity relation of galaxies, and that for reproducing the colour-magnitude relation it is important to suppress the chemical enric…
We present models of the late stages of stellar evolution intended to explain the UV upturn phenomenon in elliptical galaxies. Such models are sensitive to values of a number of poorly-constrained physical parameters, including metallicity, age, stellar mass loss, helium enrichment, and the distribution of stars on the zero age horizontal branch (HB). We explore the sensitivity of the results to values of these parameters, and reach the following conclusions. Old, metal rich galaxies, such as giant ellipticals, naturally develop a UV upturn within a reasonable time scale - less than a Hubble t…
The abundance of alpha-process elements such as magnesium and carbon relative to iron measured from the broad emission lines of QSOs can serve as a diagnostic of the star formation and chemical enrichment histories of their host galaxies. We investigate the relationship between Fe/Mg and Fe/C abundance ratios and the resulting Fe II / Mg II 2800A and Fe II / 1900A-blend flux ratios, both of which have been measured in QSOs out to redshifts of approximately six. Using a galactic chemical evolution model based on a starburst in a giant elliptical galaxy, we find that these flux ratios are good t…
We review estimates of the metallicities in elliptical galaxies, with an emphasis on recent results from the ASCA satellite. X-ray spectra of elliptical galaxies are adequately fit by models consisting of hot gas with subsolar Fe abundance and roughly solar Si-to-Fe ratio, plus a hard component from an ensemble of X-ray binaries. Although complications in the form of an extra soft continuum or multiple phases can be considered, we show that the consistency of the Si line diagnostic and continuum temperatures demonstrates that the data -- at the present level of sensitivity and spectral resolut…
The presence of black holes (BHs) at the centers of dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs) has been argued both theoretically and observationally. Using archival HST/WFPC2 data, we found the Virgo cluster dwarf elliptical galaxy VCC128 to harbor a binary nucleus, a feature that is usually interpreted as the observable signature of a stellar disk orbiting a central massive black hole. Debattista et al. 2006 estimated its mass M sim 6 10^6 - 5 10^7 Msun. One of the most robust means of verifying the existence of a BH is radio continuum and/or X-ray emission, however because of the deficiency of gas in …
In this paper we show preliminary results concerning the chemical and energetic enrichment of the ICM by means of supernova-driven wind models in elliptical galaxies. These models are obtained by taking into account new prescriptions about supernova remnant evolution in the interstellar medium. We find that models, which can reproduce the Fe abundance and the [$α$/Fe] ratios observed in the ICM, predict that the SN energy input can provide about 0.3 keV per ICM particle. We have obtained this result by assuming that each SN explosion inject on the average into the ISM no more than 20% of its i…
The aim of this paper is to cast light on the formation and evolution of elliptical galaxies by means of N-body/hydro-dynamical simulations that include star formation, feed-back and chemical evolution. Particular attention is paid to the case of dwarf spheroidals of the Local Group which, thanks to their proximity and modern ground-based and space instrumentation, can be resolved into single stars so that independent determinations of their age and star formation history can be derived. Dwarf galaxies are known to exhibit complicated histories of star formation ranging from a single very old …
Narrow band photometry is presented on 27 dwarf ellipticals in the Fornax cluster. Calibrated with Galactic globular cluster data and spectrophotometric population models, the colors indicated that dwarf ellipticals have a mean [Fe/H] of -1.00+/-0.28 ranging from -1.6 to -0.4. The mean age of dwarf ellipticals, also determined photometrically, is estimated at 10+/-1 Gyrs compared to 13 Gyrs for bright Fornax ellipticals. Comparison of our metallicity color and Mg_2 indices demonstrates that the [Mg/Fe] ratio is lower in dwarf ellipticals than their more massive cousins, which is consistent wit…
We present a multiphase model for the evolution of elliptical galaxies. Diffuse gas, molecular clouds, stars and remnants are taken into account. Cloud--cloud collisions and stimulated processes are the main causes of star formation. The occurrence of winds driven by Supernovae is considered, and the evolution of the system is computed also after the first wind, allowing for further star formation from the restored gas. The evolution of the abundances of 15 elements or isotopes is followed with detailed stellar nucleosynthesis. Stellar lifetimes are taken into account and a new IMF has been ad…
We calculate the type Ia supernova rate for different star formation histories in galaxies by adopting the most popular and recent progenitor models. We show that the timescale for the maximum in the type Ia supernova rate, which corresponds also to time of the maximum enrichment, is not unique but is a strong function of the adopted stellar lifetimes, initial mass function and star formation rate. This timescale varies from $\sim 40-50$ Myr for an instantaneous starburst to $\sim$ 0.3 Gyr for a typical elliptical galaxy to $\sim 4.0-5.0$ Gyr for a disk of a spiral Galaxy like the Milky Way. W…
We numerically investigate chemodynamical evolution of interstellar medium (ISM) in gas-rich disk-disk galaxy mergers in order to explore the origin of fundamental chemical properties of halo ISM observed in elliptical galaxies. Main results obtained in this chemodynamical study are the following three. (1) Elliptical galaxies formed by gas-rich mergers show steep negative metallicity gradients of ISM especially in the outer part of galaxies. The essential reason for this is that chemical evolution of ISM in mergers proceeds in such an inhomogeneous way that in the central part of mergers, met…
Considerable evidence suggests that supermassive black holes reside at the centers of massive galactic bulges. At a lower galactic mass range, many dwarf galaxies contain extremely compact nuclei that structurally resemble massive globular clusters. We show that both these types of central massive objects (CMO's) define a single unbroken relation between CMO mass and the luminosity of their host galaxy spheroid. Equivalently, M_CMO is directly proportional to the host spheroid mass over 4 orders of magnitude. We note that this result has been simultaneously and independently identified by Cote…
Far-ultraviolet radiation is a ubiquitous, if unanticipated, phenomenon in elliptical galaxies and early-type spiral bulges. It is the most variable photometric feature associated with old stellar populations. Recent observational and theoretical evidence shows that it is produced mainly by low-mass, small-envelope, helium-burning stars in extreme horizontal branch and subsequent phases of evolution. These are probably descendents of the dominant, metal rich population of the galaxies. Their lifetime UV outputs are remarkably sensitive to their physical properties and hence to the age and the …
Continuum observations at 350um are presented of seven nearby elliptical galaxies, for which CO-gas disks have recently been resolved with interferometry mapping. These SHARCII mapping results provide the first clearly resolved far-infrared(FIR) to submillimeter(submm) continuum emission from cold dust (with temperatures 32K > T > 22K) of any elliptical galaxy at a distance >40Mpc. The measured FIR excess shows that the most likely and dominant heating source of this dust is not dilute stellar radiation or cooling flows, but rather star-formation, that could have been triggered by an accretion…
AIMS: We spectroscopically characterize the Galactic Bulge to infer its star formation timescale, compared to the other Galactic components, through the chemical signature on its individual stars. METHODS: We derived iron and oxygen abundances for 50 K giants in four fields towards the Galactic bulge. High resolution (R=45,000) spectra for the target stars were collected with FLAMES-UVES at the VLT. RESULTS: Oxygen, as measured from the forbidden line at 6300 Å, shows a well-defined trend with [Fe/H], with [O/Fe] higher in bulge stars than in thick disk ones, which were known to be more oxygen…
We present the results of a numerical code that combines multi-zone chemical evolution with 1-D hydrodynamics to follow in detail the evolution and radial behaviour of gas and stars during the formation of elliptical galaxies. We use the model to explore the links between the evolution and formation of elliptical galaxies and QSO activity. The knowledge of the radial gas flows in the galaxy allows us to trace metallicity gradients, and, in particular, the formation of a high-metallicity core in ellipticals. The high-metallicity core is formed soon enough to explain the metal abundances inferre…
Whether or not metal-rich HB stars are the dominant UV source in giant elliptical galaxies (gEs) is an important question in current astronomical research. We follow up our previous evolutionary population synthesis study with quantitative tests to answer this question affirmatively under the following three conditions: (1) Reimers' empirical mass loss formula is proper, (2) the mass loss efficiency parameter in metal-rich stars is somewhat larger than the value estimated from the metal-poor star studies, and (3) the true value of the helium enrichment parameter is positive. All three importan…
We present narrow band photometry of 91 dwarf ellipticals in the Coma and Fornax clusters taken through the Stromgren (uvby) filter system. Dividing the sample by dwarf morphology into nucleated (dEN) and non-nucleated (dE) dwarfs reveals two distinct populations of early-type systems based on integrated colors. The class of dEN galaxies are redder in their continuum colors as compared to bright cluster ellipticals and dE type dwarfs, and their position in multi-color diagrams can only be explained by an older mean age for their underlying stellar populations. By comparison with the narrow ban…
We have studied the effects of an hypothetical initial generation containing very massive stars (M > 100 Msun, pair-creation SNe) on the chemical and photometric evolution of elliptical galaxies. To this purpose, we have computed the evolution of a typical elliptical galaxy with luminous mass of the order of 10^11 Msun and adopted chemical evolution models already tested to reproduce the main features of ellipticals. We have tested several sets of yields for very massive zero-metallicity stars: these stars should produce quite different amounts of heavy elements than lower mass stars. We found…
We have used the ACS camera on HST to obtain (V,I) photometry for 57,000 red-giant stars in the halo of the Leo elliptical NGC 3377. We use this sample of stars to derive the metallicity distribution function (MDF) for its halo field stars, and comment on its chemical evolution history compared with both larger and smaller E galaxies. Our ACS/WFC field spans a radial range extending from 4 to 18 kpc projected distance from the center of NGC 3377 and thus covers a significant portion of this galaxy's halo. We find that the MDF is broad, reaching a peak at [m/H] ~ -0.6$, but containing virtually…
There are strong indications from recent papers (e.g. Worthey et al. 1992) that the abundance ratio of Mg/Fe, and consequently also O/Fe in giant elliptical galaxies is not solar. The line strengths of two Fe lines at 5270 and 5335 A are weaker than one expects from the strength of the Mg b line if [Mg/Fe] = 0. We have synthesized absorption line indices to derive the Mg and Fe abundances of these galaxies. For these models we have calculated new evolutionary tracks of high metallicity stars with a range of Mg/Fe abundances. This is the first time that such tracks have been generated. Integrat…
In this study we present a simple model of elliptical galaxies aimed at interpreting the gradients in colours and narrow band indices observed across these systems. Salient features of the model are the gradients in mass density and star formation and infall of primordial gas aimed at simulating the collapse of a galaxy into the potential well of dark matter. Adopting a multi-zone model we follow in detail the history of star formation, gas consumption, and chemical enrichment of the galaxy and also allow for the occurrence of galactic winds according to the classical supernova (and stellar wi…
We have analyzed the ASCA SIS and GIS data for seventeen groups and determined the average temperature and abundance of the hot x-ray emitting gas. For groups with gas temperatures less than 1.5 keV we find that the abundance is correlated with the gas temperature and luminosity. We have also determined the abundance of the alpha-elements and iron independently for those groups with sufficient counts. We find that for the cool groups (i.e. kT <1.5 keV) the ratio of alpha-elements to iron is ~1, about half that seen in clusters. Spectral fits with the S, Si and Fe abundances allowed to vary sep…
The processes governing both the formation and evolution of elliptical galaxies are discussed by means of a new multi-zone photo-chemical evolution model for elliptical galaxies, taking into account detailed nucleosynthetic yields, feedback from supernovae, Pop III stars and an initial infall episode. By comparing model predictions with observations, we derive a picture of galaxy formation in which the higher is the mass of the galaxy, the shorter are the infall and the star formation timescales. In particular, by means of our model, we are able to reproduce the overabundance of Mg relative to…
Elliptical galaxies are the main contributors to the chemical enrichment of the intracluster and intergalactic medium; understanding how they form and evolve enables us to get important hints on the amounts of energy and processed matter that they eject into the ICM/IGM. Recent pieces of observational evidence point to a strong connection between high redshift quasars and their host galaxies. The aim of this paper is to prove that the main aspects of the chemical evolution of the spheroids can be reproduced in the framework of a model where the shining of the quasar is intimately related to th…
The virial mass ($M_{\rm vir}$)-metallicity relation among the Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) is examined. Hirashita, Takeuchi, & Tamura showed that the dSphs can be divided into two distinct classes with respect to the relation between their virial masses and luminosities: low-mass ($M_{\rm vir} \la 10^8 M_\odot$) and high-mass ($M_{\rm vir} \ga 10^8 M_\odot$) groups. We see that both the mass-metallicity and the mass-luminosity relations of the high-mass dSphs are understood as a low-mass extension of giant ellipticals. On the contrary, we find that the classical galactic-wind…
We present a deep VLA search for HI emission from the low-luminosity Virgo Cluster elliptical galaxy NGC 4476, which contains 1.1 x 10^8 M_sun of molecular gas in an undisturbed disk in regular rotation. No HI was detected. The rms noise in the final image corresponds to a 3 sigma column density sensitivity of 1.2 x 10^20 cm^{-2} at the position of NGC 4476, averaged over the 4 kpc beam. The total HI mass is less than 1.5 x 10^7 M_sun. If we compare our HI upper limit to the H_2 content, we find that NGC 4476 is extremely deficient in HI compared to other galaxies detected in these two species…
We present the first in a series of papers studying the X-ray properties of 28 early type galaxies spanning ~3 orders of magnitude in L_x. We report emission-weighted constraints for Fe, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S and Ni. We find no evidence of the very sub-solar Z_Fe historically reported, confirming a trend in recent X-ray observations of bright galaxies and groups, nor do we find Z_Fe correlates with L_x. In general we find no evidence for multi-phase ISM, indicating multi-temperature fits found with ASCA were due to temperature gradients Chandra can resolve. We compare the stellar Z_Fe, estimated fr…
The time-scales of chemical enrichment are fundamental to understand the evolution of abundances and abundance ratios in galaxies. In particular, the time-scales for the enrichment by SNe II and SNe Ia are crucial in interpreting the evolution of abundance ratios such as [alpha/Fe]. In fact, the alpha-elements are produced mainly by SNe II on time-scales of the order of 3 to 30 Myr, whereas the Fe is mainly produced by SNe Ia on a larger range of time-scales, going from 30 Myr to a Hubble time. This produces differences in the [alpha/Fe] ratios at high and low redshift and it is known as "time…
In order to understand the formation process of elliptical galaxies which are not rotationally supported, we have carried out numerical simulations of the galaxy formation from the density perturbation with a rotation corresponding to a small spin parameter. The three-dimensional TREE N-Body/SPH simulation code used in this paper includes the dark matter and gas dynamics, radiative cooling, star formation, supernova feedback, and metal enrichment. The initial condition is a slowly rotating, top-hat over-dense sphere on which the perturbations expected in a cold dark matter (CDM) universe are s…
The high metallicity of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) is generally interpreted on the base of the galactic wind scenario for elliptical galaxies. In this framework, we develop a toy-model to follow the chemical evolution of the ICM, formulated in analogy to chemical models for individual galaxies. The model computes the galaxy formation history (GFH) of cluster galaxies, connecting the final luminosity function (LF) to the corresponding metal enrichment history of the ICM. The observed LF can be reproduced with a smooth, Madau-plot like GFH peaking at z~ 1-2, plus a "burst" of formation of dw…
We present spectral analysis of the diffuse emission in the normal, isolated, moderate-Lx S0 NGC 1332, constraining both the temperature profile and the metal abundances in the ISM. The characteristics of the point source population and the gravitating matter are discussed in two companion papers. The diffuse emission comprises hot gas, with an ~isothermal temperature profile (~0.5 keV), and emission from unresolved point-sources. In contrast with the cool cores of many groups and clusters, we find a small central temperature peak. We obtain emission-weighted abundance contraints within 20 kpc…
We compute the chemical and thermal history of the intra-cluster medium in rich and poor clusters under the assumption that supernovae (I, II) are the major responsible both for the chemical enrichment and the heating of the intra-cluster gas. We assume that only ellipticals and S0 galaxies contribute to the enrichment and heating of the intra-cluster gas through supernova driven winds and explore several prescriptions for describing the feed-back between supernovae and the interstellar medium in galaxies. We integrate then the chemical and energetical contributions from single cluster galaxie…
(Abridged version) Mayall II = G1 is one of the brightest globular clusters belonging to M31, the Andromeda galaxy. Our observations with HST/WFPC2 provide data for the (I vs. V-I) and (V vs. V-I) color-magnitude diagrams. From model fitting, we determine a rather high mean metallicity of [Fe/H] = --0.95 +- 0.09, somewhat similar to 47 Tucanae. We find a larger spread in V-I than can be explained by the measurement errors, and we attribute this to an intrinsic metallicity dispersion amongst the stars of G1. So far, only omega Centauri, the giant Galactic globular cluster, has been known to exh…
The cosmic star formation histories are evaluated for different minimum masses of the initial halo structures, with allowance for realistic gas outflows. With a minimum halo mass of 10^{7} - 10^{8} M_odot and a moderate outflow efficiency, we reproduce both the current baryon fraction and the early chemical enrichment of the IGM. The intensity of the formation rate of ``normal'' stars is also well constrained by the observations: it has to be dominated by star formation in elliptical galaxies, except perhaps at very low redshift. The fraction of baryons in stars is predicted as are also the ty…
We simulate the formation and chemodynamical evolution of 128 elliptical galaxies using a GRAPE-SPH code that includes various physical processes that are associated with the formation of stellar systems: radiative cooling, star formation, feedback from Type II and Ia supernovae and stellar winds, and chemical enrichment. We find that the star formation timescale controls when and where stars form in the contracting gas cloud, determines the effective radius at given mass, and is constrained by observation to be ten times longer than the local dynamical timescale. We succeed in reproducing the…
We present the results of an optical spectral synthesis analysis for the nuclei of 20 Seyfert 2 and 4 Radio Galaxies, using a base of stellar population templates of different ages and metallicities and a power-law continuum. Compared with the stellar population of elliptical galaxies, we find that Seyfert 2s usually have a smaller contribution from old metal rich stars (10 Gyr, Z>=Z_o), and a larger contribution from stars with 100 Myr. We also find that the contributions from stars with age <=10 Myr and from a power law continuum are small, rarely exceeding 5 per cent. These results show tha…
We present a new chemical evolution model meant to be a first step in the self-consistent study of both optical and X-ray properties of elliptical galaxies. Detailed cooling and heating processes in the interstellar medium are taken into account using a mono-phase one-zone treatment which allows a more reliable modelling of the galactic wind regime with respect to previous work. The model successfully reproduces simultaneously the mass-metallicity, colour-magnitude, the L_X - L_B and the L_X - T relations, as well as the observed trend of the [Mg/Fe] ratio as a function of sigma, by adopting t…
We present an analysis of infrared/optical/ultraviolet spectra of the two images of the first gravitationally lensed quasar Q0957+561A, B. The Hubble Space Telescope observations of Q0957+561A and Q0957+561B are separated in time by the known time delay in this system, so we can directly deduce the flux ratios. These flux ratios of images lead to important information on the dark halo of the main lens galaxy (a giant elliptical at redshift z = 0.36). Our measurements for the continuum are in good agreement with extinction in the elliptical galaxy and a small fraction of mass in collapsed objec…
We simulate the formation and chemodynamical evolution of 124 elliptical galaxies by using a GRAPE-SPH code that includes various physical processes associated with the formation of stellar systems: radiative cooling, star formation, feedback from Type II and Ia supernovae and stellar winds, and chemical enrichment. In our CDM-based scenario, galaxies form through the successive merging of sub-galaxies with various masses. Their merging histories vary between a major merger at one extreme, and a monolithic collapse of a slow-rotating gas cloud at the other extreme. The basic processes driving …
We present here a study of chemical abundances in the giant elliptical galaxy M 87 using high-resolution spectra obtained with the Reflection Grating Spectrometers during two deep XMM-Newton observations. While we confirm the two-temperature structure of the inter-stellar medium (ISM) in M 87, we also show that a continuous temperature distribution describes the data equally well. The high statistics allows us, for the first time, to determine relatively accurate abundance values also for carbon and nitrogen. The comparison of the abundance ratios of C, N, O and Fe in the ISM of M 87 with thos…
The current understanding of galaxy formation is that it proceeds in a 'bottom up' way, with the formation of small clumps of gas and stars that merge hierarchically until giant galaxies are built up. The baryonic gas loses the thermal energy by radiative cooling and falls towards the centres of the new galaxies, while supernovae (SNe) blow gas out. Any realistic model therefore requires a proper treatment of these processes, but hitherto this has been far from satisfactory. Here we report an ultra-high-resolution simulation that follows evolution from the earliest stages of galaxy formation t…
(Abridged) We study the stellar populations of 14 elliptical galaxies in the Virgo cluster. We propose an alternative approach to the standard side-band method to measure equivalent widths (EWs). Our Boosted Median Continuum maps the EWs more robustly than the side-band method, minimising the effect from neighbouring absorption lines and reducing the age-metallicity degeneracy. We concentrate on Balmer lines (Hbeta,Hgamma,Hdelta), the G band and the 4000A break as age-sensitive indicators, and on the combination [MgFe] as the main metallicity indicator. We go beyond the standard comparison of …
Perhaps the most noteworthy of recent findings in extragalactic globular cluster (GC) research are the multimodal GC metallicity distributions seen in massive early-type galaxies. We explore the origin of these distinct GC populations, the implications for galaxy formation and evolution, and identify several new properties of GC systems. First, when we separate the metal-rich and metal-poor subpopulations, in galaxies with bimodal GC metallicity distributions, we find that the mean metallicity of the metal-rich GCs correlates well with parent galaxy luminosity but the mean metallicity of the m…
We have observed three fields of the Coma cluster of galaxies with a narrow band (modified Stromgren) filter system. Observed galaxies include 31 in the vicinity of NGC 4889, 48 near NGC 4874, and 60 near NGC 4839 complete to M_5500=-18 in all three subclusters. Spectrophotometric classification finds all three subclusters of Coma to be dominated by red, E type (ellipticals/S0's) galaxies with a mean blue fraction, f_B, of 0.10. The blue fraction increases to fainter luminosities, possible remnants of dwarf starburst population or the effects of dynamical friction removing bright, blue galaxie…
The molecular gas in (some) early type galaxies holds important clues to the history and the future of these galaxies. In pursuit of these clues we have used the BIMA millimeter array to map CO emission in the giant elliptical galaxies NGC 83 and NGC 2320 and to search for CO emission from the S0 galaxy NGC 5838. We also present V and R images of NGC 83 and NGC 2320 which trace their dust distributions and enable a search for disky stellar structures. The molecular gas in NGC 83 is well relaxed, but both CO and dust in NGC 2320 show asymmetric structures which may be linked to a recent acquisi…
In this poster, we present new results on narrow band photometry for A2218 ($z$=0.18) and A2125 ($z$=0.25), two clusters with similar redshifts, but very different cluster properties. A2218 is a dense, elliptical-rich cluster (Bautz-Morgan type II) similar to Coma in its evolutionary appearance. A2125 is a less dense, more open cluster (Bautz-Morgan type II-III), although similar in richness. The color-magnitude relation indicates that A2125 has a more developed blue population than A2218 (the Butcher-Oemler effect), although both clusters have significant numbers of blue galaxies (normal star…
We have analyzed archival HST/ACS images in Sloan g and z of the globular cluster (GC) systems of 53 ellipticals in the Virgo Cluster, spanning massive galaxies to dEs. Among the new results are: (1) In the gEs M87 and NGC 4649, there is a correlation between luminosity and color for individual metal-poor GCs, such that more massive GCs are more metal-rich. A plausible interpretation of this result is self-enrichment, and may suggest that these GCs once possessed dark matter halos. (2) Many dEs have metal-rich GC subpopulations. We also confirm the GC color--galaxy luminosity relations found p…
We present data probing the spatial and kinematical distribution of both the atomic (HI) and molecular (CO) gas in NGC 5218, the late-type barred spiral galaxy in the spiral-elliptical interacting pair, Arp 104. We consider these data in conjunction with far-infrared and radio continuum data, and N-body simulations, to study the galaxies interactions, and the star formation properties of NGC 5218. We use these data to assess the importance of the bar and tidal interaction on the evolution of NGC 5218, and the extent to which the tidal interaction may have been important in triggering the bar. …
