(Abridged) We study the stellar populations of 14 elliptical galaxies in the Virgo cluster. We propose an alternative approach to the standard side-band method to measure equivalent widths (EWs). Our Boosted Median Continuum maps the EWs more robustly than the side-band method, minimising the effect from neighbouring absorption lines and reducing the age-metallicity degeneracy. We concentrate on Balmer lines (Hbeta,Hgamma,Hdelta), the G band and the 4000A break as age-sensitive indicators, and on the combination [MgFe] as the main metallicity indicator. We go beyond the standard comparison of the observations with simple stellar populations (SSP) and consider various models to describe the star formation histories, either with a continuous star formation rate or with a mixture of two different SSPs. Composite models are found to give more consistent fits among individual line strengths and agree with an independent estimate using the spectral energy distribution. Our age and metallicity estimates correlate well with stellar mass or velocity dispersion, with a significant threshold around 5E10 Msun above which galaxies are uniformly old and metal rich. In a more speculative way, our models suggest that it is formation **epoch** and not formation timescale what drives the Mass-Age relationship of elliptical galaxies.
Extremely Red Objects (EROs) provide the important possibility to shed light on the formation and evolution of the present-day massive ellipticals. On one hand, they allow to select z>1 old passively evolving spheroidals and to compare their abundance with the predictions of galaxy formation scenarios. On the other hand, they provide the possibility to find dust obscured starbursts, a fraction of which may trace the formation of proto-ellipticals at z>2. In this paper, the most recent results on EROs are reviewed and the main implications discussed.
We investigate, by means of numerical simulations, the kinematics of elliptical-spiral merger remnants. Counterrotation can appear both in coplanar and in non-coplanar retrograde mergers, and it is mostly associated to the presence of a disk component, which preserves part of its initial spin. In turn, the external regions of the two interacting galaxies acquire part of the orbital angular momentum, due to the action of tidal forces.
The current evidence about the age of stellar populations in elliptical galaxies is reviewed. The case for the bulk of stars in galactic spheroids (ellipticals and bulges) having formed at high redshift (z>~3) is now compelling, both for cluster and well as field galaxies. Whether the assembly of ellipticals is deferred to lower redshifts compared to the formation of their stars remains controversial, and we mention ongoing observational programs that are designed to solve the issue. We present preliminary results of a pilot project aimed at ascertain the nature of extremely red galaxies (ERGs…
We take advantage of the largest high-resolution simulation of cosmic structure growth ever carried out -- the Millennium Simulation of the concordance LambdaCDM cosmogony -- to study how the star formation histories, ages and metallicities of elliptical galaxies depend on environment and on stellar mass. We concentrate on a galaxy formation model which is tuned to fit the joint luminosity/colour/morphology distribution of low redshift galaxies. Massive ellipticals in this model have higher metal abundances, older luminosity-weighted ages, shorter star formation timescales, but lower assembly …
We perform numerical simulations of galaxy mergers between star-forming and gas-rich spirals in order to explore the origin of the Fundamental Plane (FP) of elliptical galaxies. We consider particularly that the origin of the slope of the FP is essentially due to the non-homology in structure and kinematics of elliptical galaxies and accordingly investigate structural and kinematical properties of elliptical galaxies formed by dissipative galaxy merging with star formation. We found that the rapidity of star formation, which is defined as the ratio of dynamical time-scale of merger progenitor …
Star formation in elliptical galaxies (Es) was and is mostly dominated by mergers and accretions with many suggestive examples seen among local galaxies. Present day star formation in Es is easily measurable in two thirds of Es and appears bursty in character. Direct age determinations from integrated light indicate real age scatter. If one assumes the oldest-looking galaxies are a Hubble time old, the light weighted mean ages of the rest spread to 0.5 of a Hubble time, with scatterlings at very young ages. Larger Es and Es in clusters have less age scatter than smaller or field Es. The size t…
We explore the possibility to calibrate massive cluster ellipticals as cosmological standard rods using the Fundamental Plane relation combined with a correction for luminosity evolution. Though cluster ellipticals certainly formed in a complex way, their passive evolution out to redshifts of about 1 indicates that basically all major merging and accretion events took place at higher redshifts. Therefore, a calibration of their luminosity evolution can be attempted. We propose to use the Mg$-σ$ relation for that purpose because it is independent of distance and cosmology. We discuss a variety …
We present the first results from a study designed to test whether, given high-quality spectrophotometry spanning the mid-UV--optical wavelength regime, it is possible to distinguish the metal content (Z) and star-formation history (sfh) of individual elliptical galaxies with sufficient accuracy to establish whether their formation history is linked to their detailed morphology and position on the Fundamental Plane. From a detailed analysis of UV-optical spectrophotometry of the `cuspy' elliptical galaxy NGC 3605 and the giant elliptical NGC 5018 we find that: 1) optical spectra with l > 3500 …
Globular cluster systems provide valuable fossil records of the formation history of their parent galaxies. This review specifically concentrates on using color distributions of the globular cluster systems of elliptical galaxies to distinguish between competing models for the formation of these galaxies. The observational requirements for testing various formation models are discussed, and the results of past and current studies are reviewed. The conclusions of these studies are that most color distributions appear to have two or more peaks, indicating an episodic formation history. This resu…
We make a prediction of the cosmic supernova rate history as a composite of the supernova rates in spiral and elliptical galaxies. We include the metallicity effect on the evolution of Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) progenitors, and construct detailed models for the evolutions of spiral and elliptical galaxies in clusters and field to meet the latest observational constraints. In the cluster environment, the synthesized cosmic star formation rate (SFR) has an excess at $z \gtsim 3$ corresponding to the early star burst in ellipticals and a shallower slope from the present to the peak at the redshif…
Exploring the recent expansion history of the universe promises insights into the cosmological model, the nature of dark energy, and potentially clues to high energy physics theories and gravitation. We examine the extent to which precision distance-redshift observations can map out the history, including the acceleration-deceleration transition, and the components and equations of state of the energy density. We consider the ability to distinguish between various dynamical scalar field models for the dark energy, as well as higher dimension and alternate gravity theories. Finally, we present …
We present a study of the colors of globular clusters associated with the elliptical galaxy NGC 3923. Our final sample consists of Washington system C and T_1 photometry for 143 globular cluster candidates with an expected contamination of no more than 10%. We find that the color distribution of the NGC 3923 globular cluster system (GCS) is broad and appears to have at least two peaks. A mixture modeling analysis of the color distribution indicates that a two component model is favored over a single component one at a high level of confidence (>99%). This evidence for more than one population …
The distribution and kinematics of the molecular gas in elliptical galaxies give information on the origin and history of the gas and the rate of star formation activity in ellipticals. I describe some preliminary results of a survey which will more than double the number of elliptical galaxies with resolved molecular distributions.
We present a two-pronged approach to the formation of early-type galaxies, using a sample of 18 galaxies at 0.5 < z < 1 from the HST/ACS Ultra Deep Field and GRAPES surveys: 1) We combine slitless low resolution spectroscopy from the GRAPES dataset with simple models of galaxy formation to explore their star formation histories. 2) We also perform an analysis of their surface brightness distribution with the unprecedented details provided by the ACS superb angular resolution and photometric depth. Our spectroscopic analysis reveals that their stellar populations are rather homogeneous in age a…
(Abridged) Environmental differences in the stellar populations of early-type galaxies are explored using principal component analysis (PCA), focusing on differences between elliptical galaxies in Hickson Compact Groups (HCGs) and in the field. The method is model-independent and relies on variations between the observed spectra. The projections (PC1,PC2) reveal a difference with respect to environment, with a wider range in PC1 and PC2 in the group sample. We define a spectral parameter (zeta=0.36PC1-PC2) which simplifies this result to a single number: field galaxies have a very similar valu…
We have obtained Keck spectra for 16 globular clusters (GCs) associated with the merger remnant elliptical NGC 1052, as well as a long-slit spectrum of the galaxy. We derive ages, metallicities and abundance ratios from simple stellar population models using the methods of Proctor & Sansom (2002), applied to extragalactic GCs for the first time. We find all of the GCs to be ~13 Gyr old according to simple stellar populations, with a large range of metallicities. From the galaxy spectrum we find NGC 1052 to have a luminosity-weighted central age of ~2 Gyr and metallicity of [Fe/H]~+0.6. No stro…
We have studied the environmental effect on optical-NIR color gradients of 273 nearby elliptical galaxies. Color gradient is a good tool to study the evolutionary history of elliptical galaxies, since the steepness of the color gradient reflects merging history of early types. When an elliptical galaxy goes through many merging events, the color gradient can be get less steep or reversed due to mixing of stars. One simple way to measure color gradient is to compare half-light radii in different bands. We have compared the optical and near infrared half-light radii of 273 early-type galaxies fr…
Globular clusters are valuable fossil records of the formation and evolution of their host galaxies. The color distribution of elliptical galaxy globular cluster systems indicates an episodic formation history, consistent with a merger origin for these galaxies. Spectroscopic studies of globular cluster systems are a promising route to further constrain models of elliptical galaxy formation. They also provide a useful probe of the mass distribution of ellipticals at large radii.
The star formation history of the dE NGC 185, together with its spatial variations, has been investigated using new ground-based $H_α$ and $BVI$ photometry, and synthetic color--magnitude diagrams (CMDs). We find that the bulk of the stars were formed in NGC 185 at an early epoch of its evolution. After that, the star formation proceeded at a low rate until the recent past, the age of the most recent traces of star formation activity detected in the galaxy being some 100 Myr. The star formation rate, $ψ(t)$ for old and intermediate ages shows a gradient in the sense of taking smaller values fo…
We discuss a class of low-luminosity E/S0 galaxies which have both HI disks and (in contrast to more luminous E/S0s with HI) ongoing star formation. We suggest that such objects are common, but that only a few are known at present because optical magnitude-limited galaxy catalogues are biased against them. The HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS) should eventually detect many more. We suggest that `boxy' and `disky' ellipticals are distinct not only in their structure and kinematics, but in their star-formation history.
We have performed a spectroscopic study of globular clusters (GCs) in the giant elliptical NGC 5128 using the 2dF facility at the Anglo-Australian telescope. We obtained integrated optical spectra for a total of 254 GCs, 79 of which are newly confirmed on the basis of their radial velocities and spectra. In addition, we obtained an integrated spectrum of the galaxy starlight along the southern major axis. We derive an empirical metallicity distribution function (MDF) for 207 GCs (~14 of the estimated total GC system) based upon Milky Way GCs. This MDF is multimodal at high statistical signific…
We have used the ACS camera on HST to obtain (V,I) photometry for 57,000 red-giant stars in the halo of the Leo elliptical NGC 3377. We use this sample of stars to derive the metallicity distribution function (MDF) for its halo field stars, and comment on its chemical evolution history compared with both larger and smaller E galaxies. Our ACS/WFC field spans a radial range extending from 4 to 18 kpc projected distance from the center of NGC 3377 and thus covers a significant portion of this galaxy's halo. We find that the MDF is broad, reaching a peak at [m/H] ~ -0.6$, but containing virtually…
Understanding the formation of globular clusters will help us to constrain the evolutionary history of galaxies. For mergers on-going today, it appears that the number of newly created proto-globulars varies with the progenitor types and that the percentage increase in the total cluster population is 100% or less. Elliptical galaxies, which are generally thought to be the end-result of such mergers, often show evidence for two populations of globular clusters. This has been taken as support for the merger picture but we show that there are several problems when examined in detail. Strong evide…
In order to investigate the nature and origin of dust in elliptical galaxies, a method for the dust mass evaluation, which accounts for the dust temperature distribution, is here presented and discussed. The derived dust masses turn out to be a factor 2-6 larger than those obtained with the single temperature approximation. A correlation between the far-infrared and the blue luminosity has been also found. The results are discussed in terms of dust ``mass discrepancy'' and of the possible evolution scenarios: evaporation flow and/or cooling flow. While the present data cannot discriminate betw…
We investigate the nature of stellar populations of major galaxy mergers between late-type spirals considerably abundant in interstellar medium by performing numerical simulations designed to solve both the dynamical and chemical evolution in a self-consistent manner. We particularly consider that the star formation history of galaxy mergers is a crucial determinant for the nature of stellar populations of merger remnants, and therefore investigate how the difference in star formation history between galaxy mergers affects the chemical evolution of galaxy mergers. We found that the rapidity of…
Near-infrared spectra of 50 elliptical galaxies in the Pisces, A2199 and A2634 clusters, and in the general field, have been obtained. The strength of the CO (2.3 micron) absorption feature in these galaxies is used to explore the presence of an intermediate-age population (e.g. Asymptotic Giant Branch stars) in ellipticals in different environments. We find the strongest evidence for such a population comes from ellipticals in groups of a few members, which we interpret as the result of recent minor merging of these galaxies with later type galaxies. Field galaxies from very isolated environm…
New ground-based and HST observations of distant clusters make it possible to trace the history of E/S0 galaxies to lookback times of ~10 $h_{50}^{-1}$ Gyr. The data strongly favor a scenario in which cluster ellipticals formed very early with a narrow spread in ages. By z = 1.2 there are changes in color and luminosity consistent with simple passive evolution, but even at that redshift the galaxies appear mature, with red colors suggesting ages of several Gyr. Apparently we are still falling well short of seeing the true epoch of formation.
We present preliminary results of numerical simulations of dissipationless merging of stellar systems, aimed at exploring the consequences of merging between gas free, spheroidal systems. In particular, we study the dynamical and structural characteristics of hierarchical merging between equal mass stellar systems, and we compare the properties of the end-products with the most important structural and dynamical scaling relations obeyed by spheroids. In the explored hierarchy of four successive mergings we find that the FP tilt is marginally conserved, but both the Faber-Jackson and Kormendy r…
We report high quality near-infrared spectroscopy of 12 ultra-luminous infrared galaxy mergers (ULIRGs). Our new VLT and Keck data provide ~0.5" resolution, stellar and gas kinematics of these galaxies most of which are compact systems in the last merger stages. We confirm that ULIRG mergers are 'ellipticals-in-formation'. Random motions dominate their stellar dynamics, but significant rotation is common. Gas and stellar dynamics are decoupled in most systems. ULIRGs fall on or near the fundamental plane of hot stellar systems, and especially on its less evolution sensitive, r(eff)-sigma proje…
We present the results of 11 elliptical galaxies with strong nebular emission lines during our study of star formation history along the Hubble sequence. After removing the dilution from the underlying old stellar populations by use of stellar population synthesis model, we derive the accurate fluxes of all emission lines for these objects, which are later classified with emission line ratios into one Seyfert 2, six LINERs and four HII galaxies. We also identify one HII galaxy (A1216+04) as a hitherto unknown Wolf-Rayet galaxy from the presence of the Wolf-Rayet broad bump at 4650 Å. We propos…
The last decade of research on elliptical galaxies has produced a wealth of new information concerning both their detailed structure and their global scaling relations. We review the old and new results about isophote shapes and subcomponents (Sect. 1), scaling relations of global parameters and redshift evolution (Sect. 2), and the ages, metallicities (Sect. 3) and abundance ratios (Sect. 4). Finally, we confront the observations with hierarchical formation scenarios of elliptical galaxies (Sect. 5). The picture emerging from this variety of observational evidence is broadly consistent with t…
A method of deriving and using merging history trees of dark matter galaxy haloes directly from pure gravity N-body simulations is presented. This combines the full non-linearity of N-body simulations with the flexibility of the semi-analytical approach. Merging history trees derived from power-law initial perturbation spectrum simulations (for indices $n=-2$ and $n=0$) by Warren et al. (1992) are shown. As an example of a galaxy formation model, these are combined with evolutionary stellar population synthesis, via simple scaling laws for star formation rates, showing that if most star format…
We present evidence for non-Gaussian velocity fields within the cores of luminous elliptical galaxies. This evidence is based upon high signal-to-noise, medium-resolution spectroscopy of the cores of early-type members of the Virgo and Coma clusters obtained with the WIYN 3.5-m telescope. The Virgo data were acquired using an integral-field unit (DensePak) allowing the velocity field to be sampled over a variety of spatial scales. The Coma data were obtained through single, 2-arcsec diameter fibers. The cross-correlation profiles of luminous ellipticals show considerable structure, often havin…
Using semi-analytical models of galaxy formation, the origin of boxy and disky elliptical galaxies is investigated. We find that the simple scenario, motivated by N-body simulations, in which the isophotal shape is only dependent on the mass ratio of the last major merger, is not able to reproduce the observation that the fraction of boxy and disky ellipticals depends on galaxy luminosity. The observations can however be reproduce with the following reasonable assumptions: (i) equal-mass mergers lead to boxy ellipticals and unequal-mass mergers produce disky ellipticals (as motivated by N-body…
The spatial distributions of the mean luminosity-weighted stellar age, metallicity, and alpha/Fe ratio along both photometric axes of two nearby elliptical galaxies have been obtained using Lick index measurements on long slit spectra in order to reconstruct the star formation history in their kinematically distinct subsystems. Lick indexes were compared with those of single-aged stellar population (SSP) models. A population synthesis method was also applied in order to help disentangling the age-metallicity degeneracy. The stars characteristics are associated with their kinematics: they are o…
How elliptical galaxy dynamics relate to galaxy structure, stellar populations, spiral galaxies and environment are reviewed. The evidence assembled shows that most, if not all, galaxies originally classified as gE contain disks within them. Taken together, the existing evidence are most consistent with the gravitational, hierarchical, clustering, merging (HCM) concept that all galaxies, including gE, are formed from the combination of much smaller galaxies. Within the HCM picture, the evidence also strongly suggests that the subunits which go into forming galaxies must be related in specific …
Diffuse elliptical galaxies (or dwarfs) are the numerically dominant population in clusters like Virgo and Fornax. They carry only a few percent of the baryonic mass but are very sensitive to the environment; so they keep a fossil record of the environmental conditions over the life of the cluster. Recent observations of their kinematics and stellar populations cast new insights to their evolutionary history. The most promising constraints come from integral field spectroscopy. We present for the first time 3D observations of a dwarf elliptical galaxy, IC 3653. These good signal to noise data …
The colour-magnitude relation (CMR) of cluster ellipticals has been widely used to constrain their star formation histories (SFHs) and to discriminate between the monolithic and merger paradigms of elliptical galaxy formation. We investigate the elliptical CMR predicted in the merger paradigm by using a LCDM hierarchical merger model. We first highlight sections of the literature which indicate that the traditional use of fixed apertures to derive colours gives a distorted view of the CMR due to the presence of colour gradients in galaxies. Fixed aperture observations make the CMR steeper and …
We present near-infrared K-band spectroscopy of 21 elliptical or cD Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs), for which we have measured the strength of the 2.293 micron CO stellar absorption feature. We find that the strength of this feature is remarkably uniform among these galaxies, with a smaller scatter in equivalent width than for the normal elliptical population in the field or clusters. The scatter for BCGs is 0.156 nm, compared with 0.240 nm for Coma cluster ellipticals, 0.337 nm for ellipticals from a variety of other clusters, and 0.422 nm for field ellipticals. We interpret this homogenei…
We report on the discovery of a rapidly co-rotating stellar and gas component in the nucleus of the shell elliptical NGC2865. The stellar component extends ~ 0.51/h100 kpc along the major axis, and shows depressed velocity dispersion and absorption line profiles skewed in the opposite sense to the mean velocity. Associated with it is a young stellar population with enhanced \hbeta, lowered Mg and same Fe indices relative to the underlying elliptical. Its recent star formation history is constrained by considering ``bulge+burst'' models under 4 physically motivated scenarios, using evolutionary…
We draw attention to the close relationship between the anisotropy parameter beta(r) for stellar orbits in elliptical galaxies and the temperature profile T(r) of the hot interstellar gas. For nearly spherical galaxies the gas density can be accurately determined from X-ray observations and the stellar luminosity density can be accurately found from the optical surface brightness. The Jeans equation and hydrostatic equilibrium establish a connection between beta(r) and T(r) that must be consistent with the observed stellar velocity dispersion. Purely optical observations of the bright elliptic…
We present the results of spectroscopic observations of 10 nucleated dwarf elliptical galaxies (dE's) in the Fornax cluster. The blue spectra of Fornax dE galaxies indicate a wide range of metallicities at a given luminosity, similar to those of intermediate to \it metal-rich globular clusters. Metal abundances derived in this paper are well correlated with optical colors and agree with previous spectroscopic results. A discrepancy with metallicities inferred from infrared colors is evident; possible causes include an intermediate age population and dilution of spectral features by a blue ligh…
We present new estimates of ages and metallicities, based on FORS/VLT optical (4400-5500A) spectroscopy, of 16 dwarf elliptical galaxies (dE's) in the Fornax Cluster and in Southern Groups. These dE's are more metal-rich and younger than previous estimates based on narrow-band photometry and low-resolution spectroscopy. For our sample we find a mean metallicity [Z/H] = -0.33 dex and mean age 3.5 Gyr, consistent with similar samples of dE's in other environments (Local Group, Virgo). Three dE's in our sample show emission lines and very young ages. This suggests that some dE's formed stars unti…
The restframe UV-to-optical flux ratio, characterizing the ``UV upturn'' phenomenon, is potentially the most sensitive tracer of age in elliptical galaxies; models predict that it may change by orders of magnitude over the course of a few Gyr. In order to trace the evolution of the UV upturn as a function of redshift, we have used the far-UV camera on the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph to image the galaxy cluster CL0016+16 at z=0.55. Our 25''x25'' field includes four bright elliptical galaxies, spectroscopically confirmed to be passively evolving cluster members. The weak UV emission fro…
We present UBVRI surface photometry for 16 dwarf elliptical galaxies in the Virgo Cluster with previously measured kinematic properties. The global optical colors are red, with median values for the sample of 0.24 +/- 0.03 in (U-B), 0.77 +/- 0.02 in (B-V), and 1.02 +/- 0.03 in (V-I). We recover the well known color-magnitude relation for cluster galaxies, but find no significant difference in dominant stellar population between rotating and non-rotating dwarf elliptical galaxies; the average age of the dominant stellar population is 5-7 Gyr in all 16 galaxies in this sample. Analysis of optica…
K-band spectroscopic observations recorded with NIFS+ALTAIR on Gemini North are used to probe the central arcsec of the compact elliptical galaxies NGC 4486B, NGC 5846A, and M32. The angular resolution of these data is ~0.1 arcsec FWHM. The central stellar contents of NGC 4486B and NGC 5846A are similar, in the sense that they occupy the same regions of the (Ca I, 12CO), (Na I, 12CO) and (13CO, 12CO) diagrams. The NGC 4486B and NGC 5846A observations depart from the sequence defined by solar neighborhood giants in the (Na I, 12CO) diagram, in a sense that is consistent with both galaxies havin…
We present narrow band photometry of 91 dwarf ellipticals in the Coma and Fornax clusters taken through the Stromgren (uvby) filter system. Dividing the sample by dwarf morphology into nucleated (dEN) and non-nucleated (dE) dwarfs reveals two distinct populations of early-type systems based on integrated colors. The class of dEN galaxies are redder in their continuum colors as compared to bright cluster ellipticals and dE type dwarfs, and their position in multi-color diagrams can only be explained by an older mean age for their underlying stellar populations. By comparison with the narrow ban…
I discuss the formation of alpha-enhanced metal-rich stellar populations in the nuclei of luminous ellipticals. Based on hierarchical clustering, different galaxy formation scenarios, which imply different star formation histories, are considered. In contrast to the fast clumpy collapse mode, the late merger of two spiral galaxies fails to reproduce significantly $α$-enhanced abundance ratios, unless the IMF is flattened. Following the star formation history predicted by semi-analytic models of hierarchical clustering for the average elliptical, solar abundance ratios are obtained with Salpete…
The study of planetary nebulae (PNe) in the nearby post-merger elliptical galaxy NGC 5128 (Cen A) now has a history of nearly twenty years. As the nearest giant elliptical, it is a prime target for extragalactic PN studies. These studies have addressed many issues including the galaxy's distance, dark matter content, halo structure, merger history, and stellar populations. We review the main PN studies that have been conducted in NGC 5128, and introduce a new study where we measure the [NII]/H-alpha ratio for 134 PNe. We find that there are no PNe in our sample that are obviously of Type I, su…
We present a detailed stellar population analysis of 27 massive elliptical galaxies within 4 very rich clusters at redshift z~0.2. We obtained accurate estimates of the mean luminosity-weighted ages and relative abundances of CN, Mg and Fe as functions of the galaxy velocity dispersion, sigma. Our results are compatible with a scenario in which the stellar populations of massive elliptical galaxies, independently of their environment and mass, had formation timescales shorter than ~1 Gyr. This result implies that massive elliptical galaxies have evolved passively since, at least, as long ago a…
Several recent observations suggest that gas-poor (dissipationless) mergers of elliptical galaxies contribute significantly to the build-up of the massive end of the red sequence. We perform a series of major merger simulations to investigate the spatial and velocity structure of the remnants of such mergers. Regardless of orbital energy or angular momentum, we find that the stellar remnants lie on the fundamental plane defined by their progenitors, a result of virial equilibrium with a small tilt due to an increasing central dark matter fraction. However, the locations of merger remnants in t…
We have constructed a family of simple models for spiral galaxy evolution to allow us to investigate observational trends in star formation history with galaxy parameters. The models are used to generate broad band colours from which ages and metallicities are derived in the same way as the data. We generate a grid of model galaxies and select only those which lie in regions of parameter space covered by the sample. The data are consistent with the proposition that the star formation history of a region within a galaxy depends primarily on the local surface density of the gas but that one or t…
The history of discovering of hot gas in galaxies is traced briefly, its main properties are described and the desirability to make them more precise, in particular to obtain additional data on the mass of such gas is pointed out. For this purpose observations of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect on hot gas of coronas of elliptic galaxies are proposed. The absolute and relative disturbances of the cosmic microwave radiation spectrum due to scattering of relic photons by Maxwellian electrons are calculated according the formula of the article. With the example of three elliptic galaxies it is shown…
We use numerical simulations to investigate the cusp at the centre of elliptical galaxies, due to the slow growth of a super-massive black hole. We study this problem for axisymmetric models of galaxies, with or without rotation. The numerical simulations are based on the `Perturbation Particles' method, and use GRAPEs to compute the force due to the cusp. We study how the density cusp is affected by the initial flattening of the model, as well as the role played by initial rotation. The logarithmic slope of the density cusp is found to be very much insensitive to flattening; as a consequence,…
We study the formation of hot spheroidal systems within the frame of a scenario where galaxy formation and evolution is related to the gentle mass aggregation history and primordial angular momentum of protogalaxies, both defined by the cosmological initial conditions. We explore two cases: (1) the hot spheroidal system forms from the dynamical instabilities of the stellar disks, and (2) the spheroidal systems are formed during the dissipative collapse of the gas before falling to the disk in centrifugal equilibrium. In the former case a good agreement with observations for late type galaxies …
We present the detection of nuclear stellar discs in the low-luminosity elliptical galaxies NGC 4458 and NGC 4478, which are known to host a kinematically-decoupled core. Using archival HST imaging, and available absorption line-strength index data based on ground-based spectroscopy, we investigate the photometric parameters and the properties of the stellar populations of these central structures. Their scale length, h, and face-on central surface brightness, mu_0^c, fit on mu_0^c-h relation for galaxy discs. For NGC 4458 these parameters are typical for nuclear discs, while the same quantiti…
In this study we present a simple model of elliptical galaxies aimed at interpreting the gradients in colours and narrow band indices observed across these systems. Salient features of the model are the gradients in mass density and star formation and infall of primordial gas aimed at simulating the collapse of a galaxy into the potential well of dark matter. Adopting a multi-zone model we follow in detail the history of star formation, gas consumption, and chemical enrichment of the galaxy and also allow for the occurrence of galactic winds according to the classical supernova (and stellar wi…
We aim at reproducing the mass- and sigma-[alpha/Fe] relations in the stellar populations of early-type galaxies by means of a cosmologically motivated assembly history for the spheroids. We implement a detailed treatment for the chemical evolution of H, He, O and Fe in GalICS, a semi-analytical model for galaxy formation which successfully reproduces basic low- and high-redshift galaxy properties. The contribution of supernovae (both type Ia and II) as well as low- and intermediate-mass stars to chemical feedback are taken into account. We find that this chemically improved GalICS does not pr…
Our unified chemical and spectrophotometric evolution code allows to simultaneously study the ISM abundances of a series of elements and the spectral properties of the stellar population in our model galaxies. We use stellar evolutionary tracks, yields, spectra, color and absorption index calibrations for 5 different metallicities and account for the increase in initial metallicity of successive generations of stars. For any kind of stellar system, as described by its star formation history and IMF, we thus can directly compare the time evolution of gaseous and stellar abundance ratios. Spiral…
We present a detailed stellar population analysis of 27 massive elliptical galaxies within 4 very rich clusters at redshift z~0.2: A115, A655, A963 and A2111. Using the new, high-resolution stellar populations models developed in our group, we obtained accurate estimates of the mean luminosity-weighted ages and relative abundances of CN, Mg and Fe. We have found that [CN/H] and [Mg/H] are correlated with sigma while [Fe/H] and Log(age) are not. In addition, both abundance ratios [CN/Fe] and [Mg/Fe] increase with sigma. Furthermore, the [CN/H]-sigma and [CN/Fe]-sigma slopes are steeper for gala…
