Superconductivity at the interface between the insulators LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 has been tuned with the electric field effect. The data provide evidence for a two dimensional quantum superconductor to insulator (2D-QSI) transition. Here we explore the compatibility of this phase transition line with Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) behavior and a 2D-QSI transition. In an intermediate regime, limited by a finite size effect, we uncover remarkable consistency with BKT- criticality, weak localization in the insulating state and non-Drude behavior in the normal state. Our estimates for the critical exponents of the 2D-QSI-transition, z =1 and nu=3, suggest that it belongs to the 3D-xy universality class.
The superconductor to insulator transition is studied in a self-charging model for a ladder of Josephson-junctions in presence of an external magnetic field. Path integral Monte Carlo simulations of the equivalent (1+1)-dimensional classical model are used to study the phase diagram and critical behavior. In addition to a superconducting (vortex-free) phase, a vortex phase can also occur for increasing magnetic field and small charging energy. It is found that an intervening insulating phase separates the superconducting from the vortex phases. Surprisingly, a finite-size scaling analysis show…
We propose a microscopic model Hamiltonian to account for impurity doping induced insulator-superconductor transition and the coexistence of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in the high-Tc cuprates. The crossover from non Fermi liquid to Fermi liquid regime characterized by delocalization of delocalization of d electrons at Cu sites is discussed.
In this paper, a brief review of the history of topological insulators is given. After that, electronic transport experiments in topological insulator-superconductor hybrid structures, including experimental methods, physical properties and seemingly contradictory observations are discussed. Additionally, some new topological insulator hybrid structures are proposed.
Results on the superconductor to insulator transition in two-dimensional films are analyzed in terms of coupling of the system to a dissipative bath. Upon lowering the temperature the parameter that controls this coupling becomes relevant and a wide range of metallic phase is recovered.
We study the perpendicular transport characteristics of small superconductor/ferromagnetic insulator/superconductor (YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$/LaMnO$_{3+δ}$/YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$) tunnel junctions. At a large bias voltage $V\sim 1$ V we observe a step-like onset of excess current that occurs below the superconducting transition temperature $T<T_c$ and is easily suppressed by a magnetic field. The phenomenon is attributed to a novel type of the superconducting proximity effect of non-equilibrium electrons injected into the conduction band of the ferromagnetic insulator via a Fowler-Nordheim tunne…
This is a short note presenting a repeated experiment of the half-quantized transport signature given by Majorana chiral modes living in a heterostructure formed by an s-wave superconductor and a quantum-anomalous-Hall insulator.
The time-averaged and low--frequency noise transport properties were investigated in the vicinity of the superconductor--insulator transition for a Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_{x}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ ($x=0.3$) thin film. The results are consistent with a superconductor (metal) embedded in a strong insulator, the latter showing two-dimensional variable range hopping properties. The weak insulator behavior -- if any -- is attributed to the metallic inclusions only.
Using the scaling theory of quantum critical phenomena we present a detailed analysis of various superconducting properties of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$, Y$_{0.8}$Ca$_{0.2}$-123, Tl-1212 and Tl-2201. Our results include: the experimental data are fully consistent with a 2D insulator to superconductor (ISQ) transition in the underdoped limit. The quantum critical properties appear to be equivalent to those of a dirty 2D bosonic system with long range Coulomb interaction. Together with previous evidence, this transition appears to be a generic feature of cuprate superconductors. The 3D superco…
We show that quantum vortex-loop proliferation may be one possible explanation of the super-long-range proximity effect observed in an insulating underdoped cuprate, using the dual theory of quantum vortices. As a test of this scenario, we propose that a dual proximity effect experiment can confirm the superfluid motion of the quantum vortices in the vortex-proliferated insulator and can measure the divergent correlation lengths near the superconductor-insulator transition.
A zero-temperature magnetic-field-driven superconductor to insulator transition (SIT) in quasi-two-dimensional superconductors is expected to occur when the applied magnetic-field crosses a certain critical value. A fundamental question is whether this transition is due to the localization of Cooper pairs or due to the destruction of them. Here we address this question by studying the SIT in amorphous WSi. Transport measurements reveal the localization of Cooper pairs at a quantum critical field B_c^1 (Bose-insulator), with a product of the correlation length and dynamical exponents zv~4/3 nea…
Two experiments are described which are related to the problem of localized Cooper pairs. Magnetic-field-tuned superconductor-insulator transition was studied in amorphous In--O films with onset of the superconducting transition in zero field near 2 K. Experiments performed in the temperature range T>0.3 K indicate that at the critical field, B=B_c, the first derivative of the resistance dR/dT is non-zero at T=0 and hence the scaling relations should be written in more general form. Study of the magnetotransport of high-resistance metastable alloy Cd-Sb on the insulating side of the supercondu…
We consider the interface between a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superconductor and non-superconducting band insulator. We show that under certain conditions, such interfaces can have an elevated superconducting critical temperature, without increasing the strength of the pairing interaction at the interface. We identify the regimes where the interface critical temperature exceeds the critical temperature associated with a superconductor-vacuum interface.
In this work we report a systematic study of electrical current effects on superconducting properties of granular Y$_{1-x}$Pr$_{x}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ samples with x close to the critical Pr concentration above which the superconductivity vanishes. The results indicate the occurrence of superconductor-insulator quantum phase transition (SIT) driven by the applied electrical current, and suggest that the current-induced SIT can be considered as the dynamical counterpart of the magnetic-field- tuned SIT.
We present results on disordered amorphous films which are expected to undergo a field-tuned Superconductor-Insulator Transition. The addition of a parallel ground plane in proximity to the film changes the character of the transition.Although the screening effects expected from "dirty-boson" theories are not evident, there is evidence that the ground plane couples a certain type of dissipation into the system, causing a dissipation-induced phase transition. The dissipation due to the phase transition couples similarly into quantum phase transition systems such as superconductor-insulator transiti…
In this paper we characterize the superconductor-insulator phase transition on a network of 2d percolation clusters. Sufficiently close to the percolation threshold, this network has a broad degree distribution, and at p=p_c the degree distribution becomes scale-free. We study the Transverse Ising Model on this complex topology in order to characterize the superconductor-insulator transition in a network formed by 2d percolation clusters of a superconductor material. We show, by a mean-field treatment, that the critical temperature of superconductivity depends on the maximal eigenvalue of the …
We establish the superconductor-insulator phase diagram for quasi-one dimensional wires by measuring a large set of MoGe nanowires. This diagram is consistent with the Chakravarty-Schmid-Bulgadaev phase boundary, namely with the critical resistance being equal to R_Q = h/4e^2. We find that transport properties of insulating nanowires exhibit a weak Coulomb blockade behavior.
3D topological insulator/s-wave superconductor heterostructures have been predicted as candidate systems for the observation of Majorana fermions in the presence of superconducting vortices. In these systems, Majorana fermions are expected to form at the interface between the topological insulator and the superconductor while the bulk plays no role. Yet the bulk of a 3D topological insulator penetrated by a magnetic flux is not inert and can gap the surface vortex modes destroying their Majorana nature. In this work, we demonstrate the circumstances under which only the surface physics is impo…
Effect of disorder in metallic thin film is examined as a possible mechanism of the Superconductor-Insulator (S-I) transition. The critical value of disorder corresponding to the transition point is found analytically by using Matsubara-Matsuda model and Green's function method.
We investigate Josephson junctions among conventional superconducting wires, in the presence of externally applied Zeeman fields and supercurrents. We demonstrate that the critical Josephson current and the current-phase relation of the junction depends on the relative orientation of the applied Zeeman fields and supercurrents. The controllability of the Josephson current relies on the stabilization of conventional superconductivity in high magnetic fields, due to the restoration of the opposite momentum opposite spin projection resonance at the Fermi level. We assert that our results can lead…
We have studied the effect of perpendicular magnetic fields and temperatures on the nonlinear electronic transport in amorphous Ta superconducting thin films. The films exhibit a magnetic field induced metallic behavior intervening the superconductor-insulator transition in the zero temperature limit. We show that the nonlinear transport in the superconducting and metallic phase is of non-thermal origin and accompanies an extraordinarily long voltage response time.
Superconductor-Ferromagnet (SF) heterostructures are of interest due to numerous phenomena related to the spin-dependent interaction of Cooper pairs with the magnetization. Here we address the effects of a magnetic insulator on the density of states of a superconductor based on a recently developed boundary condition for strongly spin-dependent interfaces. We show that the boundary to a magnetic insulator has a similar effect like the presence of magnetic impurities. In particular we find that the impurity effects of strongly scattering localized spins leading to the formation of Shiba bands c…
The antiferromagnetic(AFM) insulator-superconductor transition has been always a center of interest in the underlying physics of unconventional superconductors. The quantum phase transition between Mott insulator with AFM and superconductor can be induced by doping charge carriers in high-Tc cuprate superconductors. For the best characterized organic superconductors of k-(BEDT-TTF)2X (X=anion), a first order transition between AFM insulator and superconductor can be tuned by applied external pressure or chemical pressure. Also, the superconducting state can be directly developed from AFM insul…
The magnetic field driven superconductor to insulator transition in thin films was theoretically analyzed via a vortex-charge duality transformation applied to the Hamiltonian. Vortices condensation was conjectured as the underline physical mechanism of the insulating phase. Experimental evidence supported duality symmetry across the magnetic-field driven superconductor to insulator transition in amorphous Indium Oxide films. Counterintuitively, duality symmetry is broken at low temperatures where the insulating phase develops strongly non linear current-voltage characteristics. Here, we follo…
Properties of one-dimensional superconducting wires depend on physical processes with different characteristic lengths. To identify the process dominant in the critical regime we have studied trans- port properties of very narrow (9-20 nm) MoGe wires fabricated by advanced electron-beam lithography in wide range of lengths, 1-25 microns. We observed that the wires undergo a superconductor -insulator transition that is controlled by cross sectional area of a wire and possibly also by the thickness-to-width ratio. Mean-field critical temperature decreases exponentially with the inverse of the wi…
Magnetic-field tuned superconductor to insulator transition was observed in a novel hybrid system of granular superconducting indium, deposited on indium oxide thin film, which exhibits global superconductivity at low magnetic fields. We have used annealing to tune the coupling to lie just at the borderline where superconductivity in the underlying InOx is suppressed, which is also close to the metal-insulator transition of the InOx. The hybrid system exhibits a "giant" magnetoresistance above the H-SIT, with critical behavior that manifests the duality between Cooper pairs and vortices.
A significant anisotropy of the magnetic-field driven superconductor-insulator transition is observed in thin films of amorphous indium-oxide. The anisotropy is largest for more disordered films which have a lower transition field. At higher magnetic field the anisotropy reduces and even changes sign beyond a sample specific and temperature independent magnetic field value. The data are consistent with the existence of more that one mechanism affecting transport at high magnetic fields.
We present the results of a systematic study of thin-films of amorphous indium-oxide near the superconductor-insulator transition. We show that the film's resistivity follows a simple, well-defined, power-law dependence on the perpendicular magnetic field. This dependence holds well into the insulating state. Our results indicate that vortices play a central role in the transport of our films in the superconducting as well as insulating phases.
Measurements of transport properties of amorphous insulating indium oxide thin films have been interpreted as evidence of the presence of superconducting islands on the insulating side of a disorder-tuned superconductor-insulator transition. Although the films are not granular, the behavior is similar to that observed in granular films. The results support theoretical models in which the destruction of superconductivity by disorder produces spatially inhomogenous pairing with a spectral gap.
A study of magnetic-field tuned superconductor-insulator transitions in amorphous $Nb_{0.15}Si_{0.85}$ thin films shows that quantum superconductor-insulator transitions are characterized by an unambiguous signature -- a kink in the temperature profile of the critical magnetic field. Using this criterion, we show that the nature of the magnetic-field tuned superconductor-insulator transition depends on the orientation of the field with respect to the film. For perpendicular magnetic field, the transition is controlled by quantum fluctuations with indications for the existence of a Bose insulat…
We study the Josephson transport in a high-Tc superconductor/ferromagnetic-insulator(FI)/high-Tc superconductor numerically. We found the formation of a pi-junction in such systems. More remarkably the ground state of such junction alternates between 0- and pi-states when thickness of FI is increasing by a single atomic layer. We propose an experimental setup for observing the atomic-scale 0-pi transition. Such FI-based pi-junctions can be used to implement highly-coherent quantum bits.
We study the properties of the Bose glass phase of localized flux lines in irradiated superconductors near the matching field $B_Φ$. Repulsive vortex interactions destroy the Mott insulator phase predicted to occur at $B=B_Φ$. For ratios of the penetration depth to average defect distance $λ/ d \leq 1$ remnants of the Mott insulator singularities remain visible in the magnetization, the bulk modulus, and the magnetization relaxation, as B is varied near $B_Φ$. For $λ\geq d$, the ensuing weakly pinned Bose glass is characterized by a soft Coulomb gap in the distribution of pinning energies.
A non-band theory is developed to describe the superconductor-insulator (SI) transtition in resistively shunted, single Josephson junctions. The $I-V$ characteristic is formulated by a Landauer-like formula and evaluated by the path-integral transfer-matrix method. The result is consistent with the recent experiments at around 80 $mK$. However, the insulator phase shrinks with decreasing temperature indicating that the single Josephson junction becomes all superconducting at absolute zero temperature, as long as dissipation is present.
We study the Josephson effect in spin-singlet superconductor/helical $p$-wave superconductor junctions with a ferromagnetic barrier using the quasiclassical Green function method. It is found that both $\sinϕ$-type and $\cosϕ$-type current-phase relations always exist, irrespective of the gap symmetries in superconductors. The indispensable condition for the $\sinϕ$-type and $\cosϕ$-type current is that the magnetization must have a component parallel to the crystallographic $a$ or $b$ axis, which is distinct from the case of $p$-wave superconductor described by a $\vect{d}$-vector with a unif…
We analyze here the behavior of the Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$ near a $z=2$ insulator-superconductor quantum critical point in a perpendicular magnetic field. We show that the form of the conductivity is sensitive to the presence of dissipation $η$, and depends non-monotonically on $H$ once $η$ is weak enough. $σ_{xy}$ passes through a maximum at $H \sim ηT$ in the quantum critical regime, suggesting that the limits $H \to 0$ and $η\to 0$ do not commute.
We study numerically the superconductor to insulator transition in two-dimensional phase-glass (or chiral-glass) models with varying degree of disorder. These models describe the effects of gauge disorder in superconductors due to random negative Josephson-junction couplings, or $π$ junctions. Two different models are considered, with binary and Gaussian distribution of quenched disorder, having nonzero mean. Monte Carlo simulations in the path-integral representation are used to determine the phase diagram and critical exponents. In addition to the usual superconducting and insulating phases,…
We study junctions between superconductors mediated by the edge states of a quantum spin Hall insulator. We show that such junctions exhibit a fractional Josephson effect, in which the current phase relation has a 4π, rather than a 2πperiodicity. This effect is a consequence of the conservation of fermion parity - the number of electrons modulo 2 - in a superconducting junction, and is closely related to the Z_2 topological structure of the quantum spin Hall insulator. Inelastic processes, which violate the conservation of fermion parity, lead to telegraph noise in the equilibrium supercurrent…
The proximity effect and the Josephson current in a superconductor-insulator-ferromagnet-superconductor (SIFS) junction are investigated within the framework of the quasiclassical Eilenberger equations. This investigation allows us to compare the dirty and the clean limits, to investigate an arbitrary impurity scattering, and to determine the applicability limits of the Usadel equations for such structures. The role of different types of the FS interface is analyzed. It is shown that the decay length and the spatial oscillation period of the Eilenberger function may exhibit a nonmonotonic depe…
We study the transport properties of a diffusive Josephson junction between two spin-split superconductors made of superconductor-ferromagnetic insulator bilayers (FIS) on top of a 3D topological insulator (TI). We derive the corresponding Usadel equation describing the quasiclassical Green's functions in these systems and first solve the equation analytically in the weak-proximity case. We demonstrate the appearance of an anomalous phase in the absence of an external magnetic field. We also explore non-reciprocal electronic transport. Specifically, we calculate the junction's diode efficiency…
We report results of transport measurements in the quantum critical regime of the disorder tuned, 2D superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) in homogeneously disordered films. We show that, as the superconducting transition temperature decreases, the transition width grows, appearing to diverge at the SIT. In addition, structure develops in the DC current-voltage characteristics of films closest to the SIT indicating that the 2D superconductivity is driven into a regime of extreme inhomogeneity. The data suggest a picture of the phase transition in which large amplitude fluctuations occur as…
We study the influence of a tunable dissipative environment on the dynamics of Josephson junction arrays near the superconductor-insulator transition. The experimental realization of the environment is a two dimensional electron gas coupled capacitively to the array. This setup allows for the well-controlled tuning of the dissipation by changing the resistance of the two dimensional electron gas. The capacitive coupling cuts off the dissipation at low frequencies. We determine the phase diagram and calculate the temperature and dissipation dependence of the array conductivity. We find good agr…
We argue that a normal Fermi liquid and a singlet, spin gapped Mott insulator cannot be continuously connected, and that some intermediate phase must intrude between them. By explicitly working out a case study where the singlet insulator is stabilized by orbital degeneracy and an inverted Hund's rule coupling, mimicking a Jahn-Teller effect, we find that the intermediate phase is a superconductor.
A parallel field negative magnetoresistance has been found in quench-condensed ultrathin films of amorphous bismuth in the immediate vicinity of the thickness-tuned superconductor-insulator transition. The effect appears to be a signature of quantum fluctuations of the order parameter associated with the quantum critical point.
As platforms of Majorana modes, topological insulator (quantum anomalous Hall insulator)/superconductor (SC) heterostructures have attracted tremendous attention over the past decade. Here we substitute the topological insulator by its higher-order counterparts. Concretely, we consider second-order topological insulators (SOTIs) without time-reversal symmetry and investigate SOTI/SC heterostructures in both two and three dimensions. Remarkably, we find that such novel heterostructures provide natural realizations of second-order topological superconductors (SOTSCs) which host Majorana corner m…
We present a model of a strongly correlated system with a non-Fermi liquid high temperature phase. Its ground state undergoes an insulator to superconductor quantum phase transition (QPT) as a function of a pairing interaction strength. Both the insulator and the superconductor are originating from the same interaction mechanism. The resistivity in the insulating phase exhibits the activation behavior with the activation energy, which goes to zero at the QPT. This leads to a wide quantum critical regime with an algebraic temperature dependence of the resistivity. Upon raising the temperature i…
We investigate the behaviors of entanglement entropy in the holographical insulator/superconductor phase transition. We calculate the holographic entanglement entropy for two kinds of geometry configurations in a completely back-reacted gravitational background describing the insulator/superconductor phase transition. The non-monotonic behavior of the entanglement entropy is found in this system. In the belt geometry case, there exist four phases characterized by the chemical potential and belt width.
The superconductor-insulator (SI) transition in two-dimensional Ta thin films is investigated by controlling both film thickness and magnetic field. An intriguing metallic phase intervening superconductor and an insulator phase is observed within a narrow range of film thickness and magnetic field. Finite scaling analysis has been performed to investigate the nature of the SI transition in the thickness-tuned metallic and superconducting samples. The critical exponents in the disorder-induced metallic samples are clearly different from the exponents obtained in the superconducting samples. Dyn…
The superconductor-insulator transition in ultrathin films of amorphous Bi was tuned by an applied magnetic field. A finite size scaling analysis has been carried out to determine the critical exponent product vz=0.7 for five films of different thicknesses and normal state resistances. This result differs from the exponents found in previous experiments on InOx and MoGe films. We discuss several possible reasons for this disagreement.
In high temperature cuprate superconductors, it is now generally agreed that the parent compound is a Mott insulator and superconductivity is realized by doping the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator. In the iron-based superconductors, however, the parent compound is mostly antiferromagnetic metal, raising a debate on whether an appropriate starting point should go with an itinerant picture or a localized picture. It has been proposed theoretically that the parent compound of the iron-based superconductors may be on the verge of a Mott insulator, but so far no clear experimental evidence of dopi…
We study the disorder driven superconductor to insulator transition in amorphous films of high carrier-concentration indium-oxide. Using thin films with various sizes and aspect ratios we show that the `critical' sheet-resistance $R_{\small \square}$ depends systematically on sample geometry; superconductivity disappears when $R_{\small \square}$ exceeds $\approx6 $k$Ω$ in large samples. On the other hand, wide and sufficiently short samples of the same batch exhibit superconductivity (judged by conductivity versus temperature) up to $R_{\small \square}$ which is considerably larger. These res…
We present observations of the insulator-superconductor transition in ultrathin films of Bi on solid xenon condensed on quartz and on Ge on quartz. The relative permeability $ε_{r}$ ranges from 1.5 for Xe to 15 for Ge. Though we find screening effects as expected, the I-S transition is robust, and unmodified by the substrate. The resistance separatrix is found to be close to $h/4e^2$ and the crossover thickness close to 25 $Å$ for all substrates. I-V studies and Aslamazov-Larkin analyses indicate superconductivity is inhomogeneous. The transition is best described in terms of a percolation mod…
We present results of measurements obtained from a mesoscopic ring of a highly disordered superconductor. Superimposed on a smooth magnetoresistance background we find periodic oscillations with a period that is independent of the strength of the magnetic field. The period of the oscillations is consistent with charge transport by Cooper pairs. The oscillations persist unabated for more than 90 periods, through the transition to the insulating phase, up to our highest field of 12 T.
The superconductor-insulator transition in the presence of strong compensation of dopants was recently realized in La doped YBCO. The compensation of acceptors by donors makes it possible to change independently the concentration of holes n and the total concentration of charged impurities N. We propose a theory of the superconductor-insulator phase diagram in the (N,n) plane. It exhibits interesting new features in the case of strong coupling superconductivity, where Cooper pairs are compact, non-overlapping bosons. For compact Cooper pairs the transition occurs at a significantly higher dens…
The evolution with carrier concentration of the electrical properties of amorphous indium oxide (InO) thin films has been studied using electronic double layer transistor configurations. Carrier variations of up to 7 X 10^(14) carriers/cm^2 were achieved using an ionic liquid as a gate dielectric. The superconductor-insulator transition was traversed and the magnitude and position of the large magnetoresistance peak found in the insulating regime were modified. The systematic variation of the magnetoresistance peak with charge concentration was found to be qualitatively consistent with a simul…
Understanding the subgap behavior of Normal-Insulator-Superconductor (NIS) tunnel junctions is important in order to be able to accurately model the thermal properties of the junctions. Hekking and Nazarov developed a theory in which NIS subgap current in thin-film structures can be modeled by multiple Andreev reflections. In their theory, the current due to Andreev reflections depends on the junction area and the junction resistance area product. We have measured the current due to Andreev reflections in NIS tunnel junctions for various junction sizes and junction resistance area products and…
We study the superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) in $d$-wave superconducting ultrathin films. By means of the kernel polynomial method, the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations are solved for square lattices with up to $360\times 360$ unit cells self-consistently, making it possible to observe fully the nanoscale spatial fluctuations of the superconducting order parameters and discriminate accurately the localized quasiparticle states from the extended ones by the lattice-size scaling of the generalized inverse participation ratio. It is shown that Anderson localization can not entirely inhibi…
We studied low-frequency spin dynamics near the impurity-induced superconductor-to-insulator transition for underdoped high-Tc superconductor YBa2(Cu1-xMx)4O8 (M=Ni, Zn) using the Cu nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spin-echo technique. We observed remarkable suppression of the normal-state pseudo spin-gap and a loss of Cu NQR spectrum intensity at low temperatures around the critical impurity concentration.
