The superconductor-insulator transition in the presence of strong compensation of dopants was recently realized in La doped YBCO. The compensation of acceptors by donors makes it possible to change independently the concentration of holes n and the total concentration of charged impurities N. We propose a theory of the superconductor-insulator phase diagram in the (N,n) plane. It exhibits interesting new features in the case of strong coupling superconductivity, where Cooper pairs are compact, non-overlapping bosons. For compact Cooper pairs the transition occurs at a significantly higher density than in the case of spatially overlapping pairs. We establish the superconductor-insulator phase diagram by studying how the potential of randomly positioned charged impurities is screened by holes or by strongly bound Cooper pairs, both in isotropic and layered superconductors. In the resulting self-consistent potential the carriers are either delocalized or localized, which corresponds to the superconducting or insulating phase, respectively.
The complex ac conductivity of thin highly disordered InOx films was studied as a function of magnetic field through the nominal two-dimensional superconductor-insulator transition. We have resolved a significant finite-frequency superfluid stiffness well into the insulating regime, giving direct evidence for quantum superconducting fluctuations around an insulating ground state and a state of matter with localized Cooper pairs. A phase diagram is established that includes the superconducting state, a transition to a "Bose" insulator, and an eventual crossover to a "Fermi" insulating state at …
We investigate the magnetic field evolution of the superconducting state in a strongly disordered NbN thin film which exhibits a magnetic field tuned superconductor to insulator-like transition, employing low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). Transport measurements of the sample reveals a characteristic magnetic field, which separates the low field state where resistance decreases with decreasing temperature, i.e. dR/dT > 0 and a high-field state where dR/dT < 0. However, STS imaging of the superconducting state reveals a smooth evolution across this field and the presence of …
In most semiconductors and insulators the presence of a small density of charged impurities cannot be avoided, but their effect can be reduced by compensation doping, i.e. by introducing defects of opposite charge. Screening in such a system leads to the formation of electron-hole puddles, which dominate bulk transport, as first recognized by Efros and Shklovskii. Metallic surface states of topological insulators (TI) contribute extra screening channels, suppressing puddles. We investigate the typical length $l_p$, which determines the distance between puddles and the suppression of puddle for…
In this paper we characterize the superconductor-insulator phase transition on a network of 2d percolation clusters. Sufficiently close to the percolation threshold, this network has a broad degree distribution, and at p=p_c the degree distribution becomes scale-free. We study the Transverse Ising Model on this complex topology in order to characterize the superconductor-insulator transition in a network formed by 2d percolation clusters of a superconductor material. We show, by a mean-field treatment, that the critical temperature of superconductivity depends on the maximal eigenvalue of the …
The competition between superconductivity and localization raises profound questions in condensed matter physics. In spite of decades of research, the mechanism of the superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) and the nature of the insulator are not understood. We use quantum Monte Carlo simulations that treat, on an equal footing, inhomogeneous amplitude variations and phase fluctuations, a major advance over previous theories. We gain new microscopic insights and make testable predictions for local spectroscopic probes. The energy gap in the density of states survives across the transition, …
