Magnetic-field tuned superconductor to insulator transition was observed in a novel hybrid system of granular superconducting indium, deposited on indium oxide thin film, which exhibits global superconductivity at low magnetic fields. We have used annealing to tune the coupling to lie just at the borderline where superconductivity in the underlying InOx is suppressed, which is also close to the metal-insulator transition of the InOx. The hybrid system exhibits a "giant" magnetoresistance above the H-SIT, with critical behavior that manifests the duality between Cooper pairs and vortices.
A significant anisotropy of the magnetic-field driven superconductor-insulator transition is observed in thin films of amorphous indium-oxide. The anisotropy is largest for more disordered films which have a lower transition field. At higher magnetic field the anisotropy reduces and even changes sign beyond a sample specific and temperature independent magnetic field value. The data are consistent with the existence of more that one mechanism affecting transport at high magnetic fields.
The evolution with carrier concentration of the electrical properties of amorphous indium oxide (InO) thin films has been studied using electronic double layer transistor configurations. Carrier variations of up to 7 X 10^(14) carriers/cm^2 were achieved using an ionic liquid as a gate dielectric. The superconductor-insulator transition was traversed and the magnitude and position of the large magnetoresistance peak found in the insulating regime were modified. The systematic variation of the magnetoresistance peak with charge concentration was found to be qualitatively consistent with a simul…
We study magneto-transport properties of several amorphous Indium oxide nanowires of different widths. The wires show superconducting transition at zero magnetic field, but, there exist a finite resistance at the lowest temperature. The $R(T)$ broadening was explained by available phase slip models. At low field, and far below the superconducting critical temperature, the wires with diameter equal to or less than 100 nm, show negative magnetoresistance (nMR). The magnitude of nMR and the crossover field are found to be dependent on both temperature and the cross-sectional area. We find that th…
Transparent conductive indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films, electrochemically intercalated with sodium or other cations, show tunable superconducting transitions with a maximum $T_c$ at 5 K. The transition temperature and the density of states, $D(E_F)$ (extracted from the measured Pauli susceptibility $χ_p$ exhibit the same dome shaped behavior as a function of electron density. Optimally intercalated samples have an upper critical field $\approx 4$ T and $Δ/{k_BT_c} \approx 2.0$. Accompanying the development of superconductivity, the films show a reversible electrochromic change from transpare…
Current-voltage characteristics in the insulator bordering superconductivity in disordered thin films exhibit current jumps of several orders of magnitude due to the development of a thermally bistable electronic state at very low temperatures. In this high-resolution study we find that the jumps can be composed of many (up to 100) smaller jumps that appear to be random. This indicates that inhomogeneity develops near the transition to the insulator and that the current breakdown proceed via percolative paths spanning from one electrode to the other.
We study the insulating phase of disordered indium oxide films that undergo a field-tuned superconductor-insulator transition. The transport measurements in a perpendicular magnetic field show distinct regimes of strongly fluctuating order-parameter amplitude and phase, and reveal a wide range of insulator strength in samples with differing disorder, despite the similarity in behavior near the SIT. We characterize the strength of the insulating phase and compare it to the superconducting strength. We find that the films do not return to the expected normal state even at high perpendicular magn…
In recent years there have been reports of anomalous electrical resistivity and the presence of superconductivity in semiconducting InN layers. By a careful correlation of the temperature dependence of resistivity and magnetic susceptibility with structural information from highresolution x-ray diffraction measurements we show that superconductivity is not intrinsic to InN and is seen only in samples that show traces of oxygen impurity. We hence believe that InN is not intrinsically a superconducting semiconductor.
We combine measurements of the longitudinal ($ρ_{xx}$) and Hall ($ρ_{xy}$) resistivities of disordered two dimensional amorphous indium-oxide films to study the magnetic-field tuned superconductor to insulator transition (H-SIT) in the $T \to 0$ limit. At the critical field, $H_c$, the full resistivity tensor is $T$ independent with $ρ_{xx}(H_c) = h/4e^2$ and $ρ_{xy}(H_c)=0$ within experimental uncertainty in all films (i.e. these appear to be "universal" values), this is strongly suggestive that there is a particle-vortex self-duality at $H=H_c$. The transition separates the (presumably) supe…
Experiments investigating magnetic-field-tuned superconductor-insulator transition (HSIT) mostly focus on two-dimensional material systems where the transition and its proximate ground-state phases, often exhibit features that are seemingly at odds with the expected behavior. Here we present a complementary study of a three-dimensional pressure-packed amorphous indium-oxide (InOx) powder where granularity controls the HSIT. Above a low threshold pressure of ~0.2 GPa, vestiges of superconductivity are detected, although neither a true superconducting transition nor insulating behavior are obser…
We study the low temperature magneto-transport properties of several highly disordered amorphous Indium oxide(a:InO) samples. Simultaneously fabricated devices comprising a 2-dimensional (2D) film and 10 $μ$m long wires of different widths were measured to investigate the effect of size as we approach the 1D limit, which is around 4 times the correlation length, and happens to be around 100 nm for a:InO. The film and the wires showed magnetic field ({\it B}) induced superconductor to insulator transition (SIT). In the superconducting side, the resistance increased with decrease in wire width, …
(abridged) We present results of the disorder-induced metal-insulator-transition (MIT) in three-dimensional amorphous indium-oxide films. The amorphous version studied here differs from the one reported earlier [PRB 46, 10917 (1992)] in that it has a much lower carrier concentration. As a measure of the static disorder we use the dimensionless parameter kFl. Thermal annealing is employed as the experimental handle to tune the disorder. On the metallic side of the transition, the low temperature transport exhibits weak-localization and electron-electron correlation effects characteristic of dis…
At finite temperatures and magnetic fields, type-II superconductors in the mixed state have a non-zero resistance that is overwhelmingly associated with vortex motion. In this work we study amorphous indium oxide films, which are thicker than the superconducting coherence length, and show that near $B_{c2}$ their resistance in the presence of perpendicular and in-plane magnetic fields becomes almost isotropic. Up to a linear rescaling of the magnetic fields both the equilibrium resistance as well as the non-equilibrium current-voltage characteristics are insensitive to magnetic field orientati…
The magnetic-field-tuned quantum superconductor-insulator transitions of disordered amorphous indium oxide films are a paradigm in the study of quantum phase transitions, and exhibit power-law scaling behavior. For superconducting indium oxide films with low disorder, such as the ones reported on here, the high-field state appears to be a quantum-corrected metal. Resistance data across the superconductor-metal transition in these films are shown here to obey an activated scaling form appropriate to a quantum phase transition controlled by an infinite randomness fixed point in the universality …
We present differential conductance measurements of Cobalt / Cobalt-Oxide / Indium planar junctions, 500nm x 500nm in size. The junctions span a wide range of barriers, from very low to a tunnel barrier. The characteristic conductance of all the junctions show a V-shape structure at low bias instead of the U-shape characteristic of a s-wave order parameter. The bias of the conductance peaks is, for all junctions, larger than the gap of indium. Both properties exclude pure s-wave pairing. The data is well fitted by a model that assumes the coexistence of s-wave singlet and equal spin p-wave tri…
We present tunneling spectroscopy and transport measurements on disordered indium oxide films that reveal the existence of a superconducting gap in an insulating state. Two films on both sides of the disorder induced superconductor to insulator transition (SIT) show the same energy gap scale at low temperatures. This energy gap persists up to relatively high magnetic fields and is observed across the magnetoresistance peak typical of disordered superconductors. The results provide useful information for understanding the nature of the insulating state in the disorder induced SIT.
Measurements of transport properties of amorphous insulating indium oxide thin films have been interpreted as evidence of the presence of superconducting islands on the insulating side of a disorder-tuned superconductor-insulator transition. Although the films are not granular, the behavior is similar to that observed in granular films. The results support theoretical models in which the destruction of superconductivity by disorder produces spatially inhomogenous pairing with a spectral gap.
A theory of Kondo lattices is applied to the crossover between local-moment magnetism and itinerant-electron magnetism in the t-J model on a quasi-two dimensional lattice. The Kondo temperature T_K is defined as a characteristic temperature or energy scale of local quantum spin fluctuations. Magnetism with T_N >> T_K, where T_N is the N\eel temperature, is characterized as local-moment one, while magnetism with T_N << T_K is characterized as itinerant-electron one. The Kondo temperature, which also gives a measure of the strength of the quenching of magnetic moments, is renormalized by the Foc…
Many experiments investigating magnetic field tuned superconductor-insulator transition (H-SIT), often exhibit low-temperature resistance saturation, which is interpreted as an anomalous metallic phase emerging from a "failed superconductor," thus challenging conventional theory. Here we study a random granular array of indium islands grown on a gateable layer of indium-oxide. By tuning the intergrain couplings, we reveal a wide range of magnetic fields where resistance saturation is observed, under conditions of careful electromagnetic filtering and within a wide range of linear response. Exp…
We present the results of a systematic study of thin-films of amorphous indium-oxide near the superconductor-insulator transition. We show that the film's resistivity follows a simple, well-defined, power-law dependence on the perpendicular magnetic field. This dependence holds well into the insulating state. Our results indicate that vortices play a central role in the transport of our films in the superconducting as well as insulating phases.
