Substantial control of the interlayer spacing in Bi-based high temperature superconductors has been achieved through the intercalation of guest molecules between the superconducting layers. Measurements using implanted muons reveal that the penetration depth increases with increasing layer separation while T_c does not vary appreciably, demonstrating that the bulk superfluid density is not the determining factor controlling T_c. Our results strongly suggest that the superfluid density appearing in the Uemura scaling relation n_s/m* \propto T_c should be interpreted as the two dimensional density within the superconducting layers, which we find to be constant for each class of system investigated.
A new iron-based superconductor, Lix(C6H16N2)yFe2-zSe2, with Tc = 38 K has successfully been synthesized via the intercalation of lithium and hexamethylenediamine into FeSe. The superconducting transition has been confirmed not only by magnetic susceptibility measurements but also by electrical resistivity ones. The interlayer spacing, namely, the dicstance between neighboring Fe layers, d, is 16.225(5) $\mathring{\text{A}}$, which is the largest among those of FeSe-based intercalation compounds. It has been found that the dependence of Tc on d in FeSe-based intercalation superconductors appea…
We have magnetically imaged interlayer Josephson vortices emerging from an ac face of single crystals of the single layer cuprate high-Tc superconductor (Hg,Cu)Ba2CuO4+d. These images provide a direct measurement of the c-axis penetration depth of about 10 microns. This length is a factor of 10 longer than predicted by the interlayer tunneling model for the mechanism of superconductivity in layered compounds, indicating that the condensation energy available through this mechanism is 100 times smaller than is required for superconductivity.
New superconductors, Li$_x$(C$_n$H$_{2n+3}$N)$_y$Fe$_{1-z}$Se ($n$ = 6, 8, 18), have been synthesized via the co-intercalation of linear monoamines together with Li into FeSe. The distance between neighboring Fe layers expands up to 55.7 Å for n = 18, which is much larger than the previous record of 19 Å in the FeSe-based intercalation superconductors. Tc remains saturated at $\sim$42 K.
We comment on the work by Moler, et al., [Science 279, 1193 (1998)] concerning determination of the c-axis penetration depth in the single-layer compound Tl-2201 through measuring the magnetic flux due to isolated interlayer Josephson vortices.
New FeSe-based intercalation superconductors, $A_x$(C$_8$H$_{11}$N)$_y$Fe$_{1-z}$Se ($A$ = Li, Na), with $T_\mathrm{c}$ = 39-44 K have been successfully synthesized via the intercalation of alkali metals and 2-phenethylamine into FeSe. The interlayer spacings, namely, the distances between neighboring Fe layers, $d$, of $A_x$(C$_8$H$_{11}$N)$_y$Fe$_{1-z}$Se ($A$ = Li, Na) are 19.04(6) and 18.0(1) Å, respectively. These $d$ values are the largest among those of the FeSe-based intercalation compounds and are understood to be due to the intercalation of two molecules of 2-phenethylamine in series…
The conductivity sum rule for a one-band hopping model relates the integrated spectral weight of the real part of the conductivity to the average kinetic energy. For such a model, the superconducting penetration depth is therefore dependent upon both the change in the conductivity spectral weight and the change in kinetic energy between the normal and superconducting states. Here we examine the consequences of this for the c-axis penetration depth of a layered system in which the charge transfer perpendicular to the layers (along the c-axis) is mediated by interlayer impurity scattering.
The weak van der Waals interlayer interactions in the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) materials have created a rich platform to study their exotic electronic properties through chemical doping or physical gating techniques. We reported bulk superconductivity up to 7.6 K through careful manipulation of the charge carrier density and interlayer spacing d in the chemically intercalated two dimensional 1T-SnSe2 phase. We found, for the first time in the two dimensional SnSe2, that polar organic molecules cointercalated with the alkali metal Li into the basal layers, thus significantly enhanc…
We study the effect of oxygen-doping on the critical temperature, Tc, the vortex matter phase diagram and the nature of the coupling mechanism between the Cu-O layers in the three-layer Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+delta (Bi-2223) compound. Contrary to previous reports, in the overdoped (OD) regime we do find a variation of Tc with increasing the oxygen partial-pressure of the post-annealing treatment. This variation is less significant than in the bi-layer parental compound Bi-2212 and does not follow the universal Tc vs.delta relation. Magnetic measurements reveal that increasing delta enlarges the field…
For a two layer system in a weak coupling BCS formalism any interlayer interaction, regardless of its sign, enhances the critical temperature. The sign has an effect upon the relative phase of the order parameter in each of the two planes but not upon its magnitude. When one of the planes has a dispersion consistent with CuO chains and no intrinsic pairing interaction there is both an enhancement of the critical temperature and an s+d mixing in both layers as the interlayer interaction is increased. The magnetic penetration depth, c-axis Josephson tunneling, density of states and Knight shift …
We have succeeded in synthesizing new intercalation superconductors Lix(C2H8N2)yMoSe2 and Lix(C6H16N2)yMoSe2 with Tc = 4.2 and 3.8-6.0 K, respectively, via the co-intercalation of lithium and ethylenediamine or hexamethylenediamine into semiconducting 2H-MoSe2. It has been found that the Tc values are related not to the interlayer spacing between MoSe2 layers so much but to the electronic density of states (EDOS) at the Fermi level. Moreover, only Li-intercalated LixMoSe2 with a small interlayer spacing has been found to be non-superconducting. Accordingly, it has been concluded that not only …
The issue of whether the quantum critical point (QCP) is hidden inside unconventional superconductors is a matter of hot debate. Although a prominent experiment on London penetration depth has demonstrated the existence of the QCP in the isovalent-doped iron-based superconductor BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$, with the observation of a sharp peak in the penetration depth in the vicinity of the disappearance of magnetic order at zero temperature, the nature of such an emerging QCP remains unclear. Here, we provide a unique picture to understand well the phenomena of the QCP based on the framewor…
Muon-spin rotation spectroscopy has been used to measure the internal magnetic field distribution in NbSe2 for Hc1 << H < 0.25 Hc2. The deduced profiles of the supercurrent density indicate that the vortex-core radius in the bulk decreases sharply with increasing magnetic field. This effect, which is attributed to increased vortex-vortex interactions, does not agree with the dirty-limit microscopic theory. A simple phenomenological equation in which the core radius depends on the intervortex spacing is used to model this behaviour. In addition, we find for the first time that the in-plane magn…
The superconducting and magnetic properties of Nb/Pd_1-xFe_x/Nb triple layers with constant Nb layer thickness d_Nb=200 A and different interlayer thicknesses are investigated. The thickness dependence of the magnetization and of the superconducting transition temperature shows that for small iron concentration x the Pd_1-xFe_x layer is likely to be in the paramagnetic state for very thin films whereas ferromagnetic order is established for x>=0.13. The parallel critical field B_c2II(T) exhibits a crossover from two-dimensional (2D) behavior where the Nb films are coupled across the interlayer…
In the previous four decades, a two-coil mutual inductance (MI) technique has been widely employed in characterizing magnetic penetration depth, $λ$, of superconducting films. However, the conventional methods used to obtain $λ$ are not applicable to small-sized films with common shapes, which limits the application of the MI technique in superconductivity research. Here, we first employed the fast wavelet collocation (FWC) method to a two-coil system and then proposed the possibility of directly obtaining the absolute $λ$ of polygonal superconducting films with arbitrary sizes. To verify its …
We report on generic trends in the behavior of the interlayer penetration depth $λ_c$ of several different classes of quasi two-dimensional superconductors including high-T$_c$ cuprates, Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, transition metal dichalcogenides and organic materials of the $(BEDT-TTF)_2X$ - series. Analysis of these trends reveals two distinct patterns in the scaling between the values of $λ_c$ and the magnitude of the c-axis DC conductivity $σ_{DC}$: one realized in the systems with a ground state formed out of well defined quasiparticles and the other seen in systems in which the quasiparticles are no…
A simplified model of c axis transport in the high T_c superconductors is presented. Expressions are found for the c axis optical conductivity, the d.c. resistivity, and the c axis penetration depth. Within the framework of this model, the pseudogap in the optical conductivity arises naturally as a result of the layered band structure of the high T_c materials. We discuss the occurence of the pseudogap in terms of three parameters: a band gap Delta_{ps}, a temperature dependent scattering rate Gamma(T), and the strength of the interlayer coupling t_{perp}. We are also able to find analytic exp…
In their article, Zhang et al. [Phys. Rev. B 86, 024516 (2012)] present a remarkable result for A$_x$(S)$_y$TiNCl compounds ($α$-phase TiNCl partially intercalated with alkali A and optionally co-intercalated molecular species S), finding the superconducting transition temperature T$_C$ scales with $d$$^{-1}$, where the spacing $d$ between TiNCl layered structures depends on intercalant thickness. Recognizing that this behavior indicates interlayer coupling, Zhang et al. cite, among other papers, the interlayer Coulombic pairing mechanism picture [Harshman et al., J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 23,…
We report on the study of electron transport in the oxide heterostructures with superconductor/magnetic matter (S/M) interfaces where anomaly large penetration of superconducting correlations in magnetic matter (proximity effect) is realized. The developed theoretical model based on multilayer magnetic structure of M-interlayer and experiment show presence of the long-range proximity effect at S/M-interface with antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering of the interlayer magnetization. The investigated hybrid heterostructures include cuprate superconductor, the AF-cuprate interlayer and conventional sup…
In a bilayer system of fermionic dipoles, a full control over the strength of the attractive interactions between two layers leads to the BCS-BEC crossover. Here, using the BCS mean field theory, we study such a crossover in symmetric bilayers of ultracold dipolar fermions with their dipole moments being perpendicular to layers. In particular, we investigate how the pairing between two layers and the many-body screening of interlayer interaction affect each other. We compare results for pairings obtained with three different approximations for the interlayer interactions namely, bare dipole-di…
The recently discovered (Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$)OHFeSe superconductor provides a new platform for exploiting the microscopic mechanisms of high-$T_c$ superconductivity in FeSe-derived systems. Using density functional theory calculations, we first show that substitution of Li by Fe not only significantly strengthens the attraction between the (Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$)OH spacing layers and the FeSe superconducting layers along the \emph{c} axis, but also minimizes the lattice mismatch between the two in the \emph{ab} plane, both favorable for stabilizing the overall structure. Next we explore the el…
We present a quantitative study of the current-voltage characteristics (CVC) of diffusive superconductor/ insulator/ ferromagnet/ superconductor (SIFS) tunnel Josephson junctions. In order to obtain the CVC we calculate the density of states (DOS) in the F/S bilayer for arbitrary length of the ferromagnetic layer, using quasiclassical theory. For a ferromagnetic layer thickness larger than the characteristic penetration depth of the superconducting condensate into the F layer, we find an analytical expression which agrees with the DOS obtained from a self-consistent numerical method. We discus…

Scanning SQUID susceptometry images the local magnetization and susceptibility of a sample. By accurately modeling the SQUID signal we can determine the physical properties such as the penetration depth and permeability of superconducting samples. We calculate the scanning SQUID susceptometry signal for a superconducting slab of arbitrary thickness with isotropic London penetration depth, on a non-superconducting substrate, where both slab and substrate can have a paramagnetic response that is linear in the applied field. We derive analytical approximations to our general expression in a numbe…
In the intermediate mixed state (IMS) of type-II/1 superconductors, vortex lattice (VL) and Meissner state domains coexist due to a partially attractive vortex interaction. Using a neutron-based multiscale approach combined with magnetization measurements, we study the continuous decomposition of a homogeneous VL into increasingly dense domains in the IMS in bulk niobium samples of varying purity. We find a universal temperature dependence of the vortex spacing, closely related to the London penetration depth and independent of the external magnetic field. The rearrangement of vortices occurs …
We study the zero temperature phase diagram of an imbalanced bilayer of dipolar fermions. We consider perpendicularly aligned identical dipoles in two layers and investigate the effect of population imbalance on the ground state phase at different layer spacings and average densities. The attractive part of the interlayer interaction could lead to the BEC-BCS crossover and the Fermi surface mismatch between two layers results in interesting uniform and nonuniform superfluid phases, which we have investigated here using the BCS mean-field theory together with the superfluid-mass density criteri…
We report on generic trends in the behavior of the interlayer penetration depth $λ_c$ of several different classes of quasi two-dimensional superconductors including cuprates, Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, transition metal dichalcogenides and organic materials of the $(BEDT-TTF)_2X$-series. Analysis of these trends reveals two distinct patterns in the scaling between the values of $λ_c$ and the magnitude of the DC conductivity: one realized in the systems with a Fermi liquid (FL) ground state and the other seen in systems with a marked deviation from the FL response. The latter pattern is found primarily in …
Ground-state properties of a two-dimensional system of superconducting vortices in the presence of a periodic array of strong pinning centers are studied analytically and numerically. The ground states of the vortex system at different filling ratios are found using a simple geometric argument under the assumption that the penetration depth is much smaller than the spacing of the pin lattice. The results of this calculation are confirmed by numerical studies in which simulated annealing is used to locate the ground states of the vortex system. The zero-temperature equilibrium magnetization as …
Post-annealing effects on the crystal structure and superconductivity of the lithium- and hexamethylenediamine (HMDA)-intercalated superconductor Lix(C6H16N2)yFe2-zSe2 have been investigated. Through the post-annealing, a two-step reduction of the interlayer spacing between neighboring Fe layers, d, has been observed. It has been found that a new phase of Lix(C6H16N2)yFe2-zSe2 with d= 10.30(2) Å and Tc = 41 K different from the as-intercalated phase is stabilized owing to the possible stable inclination of HMDA intercalated between FeSe layers. This result supports the domic relation between T…
The nature of the out-of-plane dissipation was investigated in underdoped $Y_{0.54}Pr_{0.46}Ba_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-δ}$ single crystals at temperatures close to the critical temperature. For this goal, temperature and angle dependent out-of-plane resistivity measurements were carried out both below and above the critical temperature. We found that the Ambegaokar-Halperin relationship [V. Ambegaokar, and B. I. Halperin, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{22}, 1364 (1969)] depicts very well the angular magnetoresistivity in the investigated range of field and temperature. The main finding is that the in-plane ph…
We evaluate the spin-wave spectrum and dynamic susceptibility in a layered superconductors with helical interlayer magnetic structure. We especially focus on the structure in which the moments rotate 90$^{\circ}$ from layer to layer realized in the iron pnictide RbEuFe$_{4}$As$_{4}$. The spin-wave spectrum in superconductors is strongly renormalized due to the long-range electromagnetic interactions between the oscillating magnetic moments. This leads to strong enhancement of the frequency of the mode coupled with uniform field and this enhancement exists only within a narrow range of the c-ax…
The structure of a new member of the AxCoO2 x nH2O family (A=Li,Na,K) was determined by high-resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. Layered lithium cobalt oxide hydrate LixCoO2 x 2H2O crystallizes in a disordered monoclinic structure (space group C2/m) with lattice parameters a = 4.8915(2) A, b = 2.8239(1) A, c = 10.7033(9) A, beta = 112.386(4)deg. Unlike the superconducting sodium cobalt oxide hydrate, this material possesses a structure with lithium-water layers intercalated between disordered octahedral sheets of cobalt oxide. The interlayer spacing is slightly larger (~0.9%) due …
We report muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and magnetization measurements, together with synthesis and characterization, of the Li-intercalated layered superconductors Li$_{x}$HfNCl and Li$_{x}$ZrNCl with/without co-intercalation of THF (tetrahydrofuran) or PC (propylene carbonate). The 3-dimensional (3-d) superfluid density $n_{s}/m^{*}$ (superconducting carrier density / effective mass), as well as the two dimensional superfluid density $n_{s2d}/m^{*}_{ab}$ (2-dimensional (2-d) area density of superconducting carriers / ab-plane effective mass), have been derived from the $μ$SR results of the ma…
