The weak van der Waals interlayer interactions in the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) materials have created a rich platform to study their exotic electronic properties through chemical doping or physical gating techniques. We reported bulk superconductivity up to 7.6 K through careful manipulation of the charge carrier density and interlayer spacing d in the chemically intercalated two dimensional 1T-SnSe2 phase. We found, for the first time in the two dimensional SnSe2, that polar organic molecules cointercalated with the alkali metal Li into the basal layers, thus significantly enhancing the superconducting Tc. We observed that the Tc scales with the basal spacing distance, meanwhile being almost independent of x in Lix(THF)ySnSe2 system. Our results offers a new general chemical route to study the rich electron correlations and the interplay of charge density wave and unconventional superconductivity in the two dimensional material.
New superconductors, Li$_x$(C$_n$H$_{2n+3}$N)$_y$Fe$_{1-z}$Se ($n$ = 6, 8, 18), have been synthesized via the co-intercalation of linear monoamines together with Li into FeSe. The distance between neighboring Fe layers expands up to 55.7 Å for n = 18, which is much larger than the previous record of 19 Å in the FeSe-based intercalation superconductors. Tc remains saturated at $\sim$42 K.
The electronic structure of the intercalated iron-based superconductor Ba2Ti2Fe2As4O (Tc - 21.5 K) has been investigated by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and combined local density approximation and dynamical mean field theory calculations. The electronic states near the Fermi level are dominated by both the Fe 3d and Ti 3d orbitals, indicating that the spacing layers separating different FeAs layers are also metallic. By counting the enclosed volumes of the Fermi surface sheets, we observe a large self-doping effect, i.e. 0.25 electrons per unit cell are transferred from the…
Using the ab initio FLAPW-GGA method we examine the electronic band structure, densities of states, and the Fermi surface topology for a very recently synthesized ThCr2Si2-type potassium intercalated iron selenide superconductor KxFe2Se2. We found that the electronic state of the stoichiometric KFe2Se2 is far from that of the isostructural iron pnictide superconductors. Thus the main factor responsible for experimentally observed superconductivity for this material is the deficiency of potassium, i.e. the hole doping effect. On the other hand, based on the results obtained, we conclude that th…
New FeSe-based intercalation superconductors, $A_x$(C$_8$H$_{11}$N)$_y$Fe$_{1-z}$Se ($A$ = Li, Na), with $T_\mathrm{c}$ = 39-44 K have been successfully synthesized via the intercalation of alkali metals and 2-phenethylamine into FeSe. The interlayer spacings, namely, the distances between neighboring Fe layers, $d$, of $A_x$(C$_8$H$_{11}$N)$_y$Fe$_{1-z}$Se ($A$ = Li, Na) are 19.04(6) and 18.0(1) Å, respectively. These $d$ values are the largest among those of the FeSe-based intercalation compounds and are understood to be due to the intercalation of two molecules of 2-phenethylamine in series…
We have succeeded in synthesizing new intercalation superconductors Lix(C2H8N2)yMoSe2 and Lix(C6H16N2)yMoSe2 with Tc = 4.2 and 3.8-6.0 K, respectively, via the co-intercalation of lithium and ethylenediamine or hexamethylenediamine into semiconducting 2H-MoSe2. It has been found that the Tc values are related not to the interlayer spacing between MoSe2 layers so much but to the electronic density of states (EDOS) at the Fermi level. Moreover, only Li-intercalated LixMoSe2 with a small interlayer spacing has been found to be non-superconducting. Accordingly, it has been concluded that not only …
In the recently synthesized Li$_x$(NH$_2$)$_y$(NH$_3$)$_z$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ family of iron chalcogenides a molecular spacer consisting of lithium ions, lithium amide and ammonia separates layers of FeSe. It has been shown that upon variation of the chemical composition of the spacer layer, superconducting transition temperatures can reach $T_c\sim 44 \mathrm{K}$, but the relative importance of the layer separation and effective doping to the $T_c$ enhancement is currently unclear. Using state of the art band structure unfolding techniques, we construct eight-orbital models from ab-initio density fu…
The ubiquitous coexistence of majority insulating 245 phases and minority superconducting (SC) phases in AxFe2-ySe2 (A = K, Cs, Rb, Tl/Rb, Tl/K) formed by high-temperature routes makes pure SC phases highly desirable for studying the intrinsic properties of this SC family. Here we report that there are at least two pure SC phases, KxFe2Se2(NH3)y (x ~ 0.3 and 0.6), determined mainly by potassium concentration in the K-intercalated iron selenides formed via the liquid ammonia route. K0.3Fe2Se2(NH3)0.47 corresponds to the 44 K phase with lattice constant c = 15.56(1) angstroms and K0.6Fe2Se2(NH3)…
We present a theoretical investigation on electron-phonon superconductivity of honeycomb MX$_2$ layered structures. Where X is one element of the group-IV (C, Si or Ge) and M an alkali or an alkaline-earth metal. Among the studied composition we predict a $T_c$ of 7 K in RbGe$_2$, 9 K in RbSi$_2$ and 11 K in SrC$_2$. All these compounds feature a strongly anisotropic superconducting gap. Our results show that despite the different doping and structural properties, the three families of materials fall into a similar description of its superconducting behavior. This allows us to estimate an uppe…
Doping bismuth selenide (Bi2Se3) with elements such as copper and strontium (Sr) can induce superconductivity, making the doped materials interesting candidates to explore potential topological superconducting behaviors. It was thought that the superconductivity of doped Bi2Se3 was induced by dopant atoms intercalated in van der Waals gaps. However, several experiments have shown that the intercalation of dopant atoms may not necessarily make doped Bi2Se3 superconducting. Thus, the structural origin of superconductivity in doped Bi2Se3 remains an open question. Herein, we combined material syn…
The iron chalcogenides FeSe and FeS are superconductors composed of two-dimensional sheets held together by van der Waals interactions, which makes them prime candidates for the intercalation of various guest species. We review the intercalation chemistry of FeSe and FeS superconductors and discuss their synthesis, structure, and physical properties. Before we review the latest work in this area, we provide a brief background on the intercalation chemistry of other inorganic materials that exhibit enhanced superconducting properties upon intercalation, which include the transition metal dichal…
We propose a theoretical description of the phase diagram and physical properties in A2Fe4Se5-type (A=K, Tl) compounds based on a coexistent local moment and itinerant electron picture. Using neutron scattering and ARPES measurements to fix the general structure of the local moment and itinerant Fermi pockets, we find a superconducting (SC) regime with s-wave pairing at the M pockets and an incipient sign-change s-wave near the Gamma point, which is adjacent to an insulating state at low doping and a charge-density-wave (CDW) state at high doping. The uniform susceptibility and resistivity are…
The geometrical and electronic structure of tripotassium doped phenanthrene, \ce{K3C14H10}, have been studied by first-principles density functional theory. The main effect of potassium doping is to inject charge in the narrow phenanthrene conduction band, rendering the system metallic. The Fermi surface for the experimental X-rays unit cell is composed of two sheets with marked one and two dimensional character respectively.
Recent observation of proximity effect \cite{Morpurgo:2007} has ignited interest in superconductivity in graphene and its derivatives. We consider Ca-intercalated graphene bilayer and argue that it is a superconductor, and likely with a sizeable $T_{c}$. We find substantial and suggestive similarities between Ca-intercalated bilayer (C$_{6}$CaC$_{6}$), and CaC$_{6} $, an established superconductor with $T_{c}$ = 11.5 K. In particular, the nearly free electron band, proven to be instrumental for superconductivity in intercalated graphites, does cross the chemical potential in (C$_{6}$CaC$% _{6}…
New intercalation superconductors of Li$_x$(C$_2$H$_8$N$_2$)$_y$TiSe$_2$ and Li$_x$(C$_6$H$_{16}$N$_2$)$_y$TiSe$_2$ with $T_{\rm c}$ = 4.2 K have successfully been synthesized via the co-intercalation of lithium and ethylenediamine or hexamethylenediamine into 1T-TiSe$_2$. Moreover, it has been found that both intercalation compounds of Li$_x$TiSe$_2$ and (C$_2$H$_8$N$_2$)$_y$TiSe$_2$ also show superconductivity with $T_{\rm c}$ = 2.4 K and 2.8 K, respectively. These results indicate that both the electron doping due to the intercalation of lithium and the expansion of the interlayer spacing b…
Superconductivity with zero resistance transition temperature (Tc) up to 8.4 K and 8.3 K can be obtained by doping cobalt and sodium in alfa-FeSe with the nominal composition of Fe0.92Co0.08Se and Na0.1FeSe, respectively. The electrical resistivity and AC magnetic susceptibility of the prepared samples, measured with physical property measurement system (PPMS), unambiguously consistent with each other to indicate that the samples are superconductive. The respective doping mechanisms for cobalt and sodium into the parent alfa-FeSe are the Fe-site substitution and the interlayer insertion. It is…
Electron-doped TiNCl is a superconductor, for which exotic mechanisms of the superconductivity have been discussed. However, difficulty in preparing large single-phase samples has prevented the direct observation of its electronic structure and how that changes with electron doping. In this study, micro-photoemission spectroscopy (μ-PES) was used to reveal the electronic structures of TiNCl and Na-intercalated TiNCl (Na-TiNCl). Comparison of Ti 2p core-level spectra shows the enhancement of a spectral feature in Na-TiNCl that suggests an increase in its metallic character. This indicates the i…
Superconductivity and charge density wave (CDW) appear in the phase diagram of a variety of materials including the high - $T$$_c$ cuprate family and many transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Their interplay may give rise to exotic quantum phenomena. Here, we show that superconducting arrays can spontaneously form in TiSe$_2$ - a TMD with coexisting superconductivity and CDW - after lithium ion intercalation. We induce a superconducting dome in the phase diagram of Li$_x$TiSe$_2$ by using the ionic solid-state gating technique. Around optimal doping, we observe magnetoresistance oscillatio…
Creating carrier reservoirs in layered compounds can effectively tune the carrier density, which often induces a variety of emergent properties. Based on solid-ion-conductor gating technique, we successfully induce superconductivity of 4.8 K in ultrathin Li-intercalated SnSe2 samples. The Li+ ions are driven in between interspacing of SnSe2 layers and form a single reservoir layer to provide electrons. In addition, a dome-like T c is found through substituting of S for Se, where the optimal T c is 6.2 K for SnSe1.8S0.2. Density functional theory calculations confirm that the intercalated LiSnS…
Metal-intercalated iron selenides are a class of superconductors that have received much attention but are less understood in comparison with their FeAs-based counterparts. Here, the controversial issues such as Fe vacancy, the real phase responsible for superconductivity, and lattice stability have been addressed based on first-principles calculations. New insights into the distinct features in terms of carrier doping have been revealed.
Behavior consistent with Coulomb-mediated high-T$_C$ superconductivity is shown to be present in the intercalated group-4-metal nitride halides A$_x$(S)$_y$MNX, where the MNX host (M = Ti, Zr, Hf; X = Cl, Br) is partially intercalated with cations A$_x$ and optionally molecular species (S)$_y$ in the van der Waals gap between the halide X layers, expanding the basal-plane spacing d. The optimal transition temperature is modeled by T$_{C0}$ ${\propto}$ ζ$^{-1}$(σ/$A$)$^{1/2}$, where the participating fractional charge per area per formula unit σ/$A$ and the distance ζ, given by the transverse A…
The discovery of superconductivity in alkali-ammonia co-intercalated FeSe has generated intensive interest because of their highest Tc (~ 45 K) among iron-chalcogenide superconductors with bulk form. Here, we report the phase diagrams of two series of Li/Na-ammonia co-intercalated FeSe1-zTez. When superconductivity is suppressed by Te doping, the magnetic ordering states are emergent. Moreover, a novel phase Lix(NH3)yFe2-δTe2 with possible antiferromagnetism is discovered. This strongly indicates the intimate relation between superconductivity and magnetism in these materials, like in other ir…

We report anisotropy of the upper critical field (Bc2) of an intercalated graphite superconductor YbC6 (Tc = 6.5 K) determined from angular dependent magnetoresistance measurements. Though the perpendicular coherence length is much longer than interlayer spacing, measured angular dependences of Bc2 are well fitted by the Lawrence-Doniach model or the Tinkham model, which are known to be applicable to quasi two-dimensional materials or thin films, rather than the effective mass model. This observation is similar to the measurements for the other intercalated graphite superconductor, CaC6, by Jo…
We have systematically grown large single crystals of layered compound beta-PdBi2, both the hole-doped PdBi2-xPbx and the electron-doped NaxPdBi2, and studied their magnetic and transport properties. Hall-effect measurement on PdBi2, PdBi1.8Pb0.2, and Na0.057PdBi2 shows that the charge transport is dominated by electrons in all of the samples. The electron concentration is substantially reduced upon Pb-doping in PdBi2-xPbx and increased upon Na-intercalation in NaxPdBi2, indicating the effective hole-doping by Pb and electron-doping by Na. We observed a monotonic decrease of superconducting tr…
The interplay between magnetism and superconductivity is one of the dominant themes in the study of unconventional superconductors, such as high-Tc cuprates, iron pnictides and heavy fermions. In such systems, the same d- or f-electrons tend to form magnetically ordered states and participate in building up a high density of states at the Fermi level, which is responsible for the superconductivity. Charge-density-wave (CDW) is another fascinating collective quantum phenomenon in some low dimensional materials, like the prototypical transition-metal poly-chalcogenides, in which CDW instability …
The discovery of ThCr2Si2-type AxFe2-ySe2 (A = K, Rb, Cs and Tl) with Tc ~ 30K make much progress in iron-based superconducting field, but their multiple-phase separations are disadvantageous for understanding the origin. On the other hand, for small alkali metals, studies on (Li,Na)FeCu(S,Se)2 and NaFe2-δS2 shows that these compounds possess CaAl2Si2-type structure, implying that ThCr2Si2-type structure is unstable for small alkali-metal intercalated FeSe under high-temperature. Here we report a new intercalate Na0.65(1)Fe1.93(1)Se2 with Tc ~ 37 K, synthesized by low-temperature ammonothermal…
Graphene holds promises for exploring exotic superconductivity with Dirac-like fermions. Making graphene a superconductor at large scales is however a long-lasting challenge. A possible solution relies on epitaxially-grown graphene, using a superconducting substrate. Such substrates are scarce, and usually destroy the Dirac character of the electronic band structure. Using electron diffraction (reflection high-energy, and low-energy), scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and density functional th…
We study superconductivity in multilayer copper oxides, in the frame of a realistic microscopic formulation. Solving the full temperature dependent BCS gap equations, we obtain a maximum in the transition temperature Tc for M=3 or 4 CuO2 layers in the unit cell for appropriate values of the interlayer tunneling (negative pair tunneling), and via the consideration of the doping imbalance between the inner and outer layers. This is the ubiquitous experimental result for Ca intercalated copper oxides, as opposed to other intercalating elements. Further, using a restricted set of parameters, we ob…
We study mean-field phases of the t-J model with long-range Coulomb interaction. In the order of increasing doping density we find a classical antiferromagnet, charge and spin stripes, and a uniform d-wave superconductor, at the realistic doping parameters. Both in-phase and anti-phase stripes exist as metastable configurations, but the in-phase stripes have a slightly lower energy. The dependence of the stripe width and the inter-stripe spacing on the doping is examined. Effects of fluctuations around the mean-field states are discussed.
We investigate the possibility of inducing superconductivity in a graphite layer by electronic correlation effects. We use a phenomenological microscopic Hamiltonian which includes nearest neighbor hopping and an interaction term which explicitly favors nearest neighbor spin-singlets through the well-known resonance valence bond (RVB) character of planar organic molecules. Treating this Hamiltonian in mean-field theory, allowing for bond-dependent variation of the RVB order parameter, we show that both s- and d-wave superconducting states are possible. The d-wave solution belongs to a two-dime…
Superconductivity mostly appears in high carrier density systems and sometimes exhibits common phase diagrams in which the critical temperature Tc continuously develops with carrier density. Superconductivity enhanced in lightly doped regime has seldom been reported, although it is an ideal direction towards the crossover between Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) and Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) limits, where the behavior of Cooper pairs changes dramatically. Here we report transport properties and superconducting gaps in single-crystalline lithium-intercalated layered nitrides (LixHfNCl and L…
First-principles calculations were carried out to provide a chemical basis for proposed structures associated with the recently reported room-temperature superconductivity in a carbonaceous sulfur hydride material under pressure. Calculations were performed on supercells of H$_3$S doped with 1.85-25\% carbon, corresponding to SH$_3$~$\rightarrow$~CH$_3$ or SH$_3$~$\rightarrow$~CH$_4$ substitutions, primarily at pressures of 270 GPa where the maximum critical temperature, $T_c$, has been reported. In the first type of substitution, the carbon atoms can be six-fold coordinated, stabilizing a CH$…
In their article, Zhang et al. [Phys. Rev. B 86, 024516 (2012)] present a remarkable result for A$_x$(S)$_y$TiNCl compounds ($α$-phase TiNCl partially intercalated with alkali A and optionally co-intercalated molecular species S), finding the superconducting transition temperature T$_C$ scales with $d$$^{-1}$, where the spacing $d$ between TiNCl layered structures depends on intercalant thickness. Recognizing that this behavior indicates interlayer coupling, Zhang et al. cite, among other papers, the interlayer Coulombic pairing mechanism picture [Harshman et al., J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 23,…
We propose to raise the critical temperature $T_c$ for superconductivity in doped C$_{60}$ molecular crystals by increasing the electronic density of states at the Fermi level $N(E_F)$ and thus the electron-phonon coupling constant in low-dimensional C$_{60}$ nanoarrays. We consider both electron and hole doping and present numerical results for $N(E_F)$, which increases with decreasing bandwidth of the partly filled $h_u$ and $t_{1u}$ derived frontier bands with decreasing coordination number of C$_{60}$. Whereas a significant increase of $N(E_F)$ occurs in 2D arrays of doped C$_{60}$ interca…
The effect of the exchange interaction on the vibrational properties and on the electron-phonon coupling were investigated in several recent works. In most of the case, exchange tends to enhance the electron-phonon interaction, although the motivations for such behaviour are not completely understood. Here we consider the class of weakly doped two-dimensional multivalley semiconductors and we demonstrate that a more global picture emerges. In particular we show that in these systems, at low enough doping, even a moderate electron-electron interaction enhances the response to any perturbation i…
It is well established that the occurrence of superconductivity in iron pnictides is closely related to the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase transitions. It, however, has not been clear whether the same scenario is appropriate for iron chalcogenide counterparts due to the absence of parent compounds for the latter family of superconductors. Here, we report the synthesis and structure determination of two novel phases in ethylenediamine intercalated FeSe, one is tetragonal and the other orthorhombic in room temperature, which can be stabilized with neutral…
It is shown that the main features of the phase diagram for high Tc superconductivity can be calculated as a function of doping in a simple, essentially unique non-Landau/Fermi liquid with quartic interactions. The phase diagram depends on a single parameter 0<gamma<1 determined by the strength of the interaction at short distances. A new d-wave gap equation has solutions that fall under a superconducting dome, which terminates at the renormalization group fixed point. Optimal doping is estimated to occur just below 3/2 π^2. The overall scale for Tc is set by the recently measured universal no…
Artificial lattices have served as a platform to study the physics of unconventional superconductivity. We study semiconductor artificial graphene -- a honeycomb superlattice imposed on a semiconductor heterostructure -- which hosts the Dirac physics of graphene but with a tunable periodic potential strength and lattice spacing, allowing control of the strength of the electron-electron interactions. We demonstrate a new mechanism for superconductivity due to repulsive interactions which requires a strong lattice potential and a minimum doping away from the Dirac points. The mechanism relies on…
