We suggest a scenario where the three light quark flavors are sequentially deconfined under increasing pressure in cold asymmetric nuclear matter as found, e.g., in neutron stars. The basis for our analysis is a chiral quark matter model of Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type with diquark pairing in the spin-1 single flavor (CSL), spin-0 two flavor (2SC) and three flavor (CFL) channels. We find that nucleon dissociation sets in at about the saturation density, n_0, when the down-quark Fermi sea is populated (d-quark dripline) due to the flavor asymmetry induced by beta-equilibrium and charge neutrality. At about 3n_0 u-quarks appear and a two-flavor color superconducting (2SC) phase is formed. The s-quark Fermi sea is populated only at still higher baryon density, when the quark chemical potential is of the order of the dynamically generated strange quark mass. We construct two different hybrid equations of state (EoS) using the Dirac-Brueckner Hartree-Fock (DBHF) approach and the EoS by Shen et al. in the nuclear matter sector. The corresponding hybrid star sequences have maximum masses of, respectively, 2.1 and 2.0 M_sun. Two- and three-flavor quark-matter phases exist only in gravitationally unstable hybrid star solutions in the DBHF case, while the Shen-based EoS produce stable configurations with a 2SC phase-component in the core of massive stars. Nucleon dissociation via d-quark drip could act as a deep crustal heating process, which apparently is required to explain superbusts and cooling of X-ray transients.
Using renormalization group methods we evaluate the thermal strangeness and charm chemical equilibrium relaxation times in the deconfined quark-gluon plasma. We present a reaction model and evaluate the total production rate of strangeness in fixed target Pb-Pb collisions at 10--300 A GeV. We discuss the relevance of our results to the diagnosis and understanding of the properties of the deconfined state.
We present possible indications for flavor separation during the QCD crossover transition based on continuum extrapolated lattice QCD calculations of higher order susceptibilities. We base our findings on flavor specific quantities in the light and strange quark sector. We propose a possible experimental verification of our prediction, based on the measurement of higher order moments of identified particle multiplicities. Since all our calculations are performed at zero baryochemical potential, these results are of particular relevance for the heavy ion program at the LHC.
We present results on the chiral transition temperature Tc in 2+1 flavor QCD extrapolated to the continuum limit and the physical light quark mass. The extrapolations are based on the data from simulations on lattices with temporal extent Ntau=6, 8 and 12 with the HISQ/tree and Ntau=8 and 12 with the asqtad action. The chiral transition is analyzed in terms of universal O(N) scaling functions. After performing simultaneous asqtad and HISQ/tree continuum extrapolation the chiral transition temperature is Tc=154 +/- 9 MeV. We also discuss the deconfinement aspects of the transition in terms of t…
We investigate the confinement mechanism in three-flavor QCD with imaginary isospin chemical potentials $(μ_u,μ_d,μ_s)=(iθT,-iθT,0)$, using the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model, where $T$ is temperature. As for three degenerate flavors, the system has $\mathbb{Z}_{3}$ symmetry at $θ=2π/3$ and hence the Polyakov loop $Φ$ vanishes there for small $T$. As for 2+1 flavors, the symmetry is not preserved for any $θ$, but $Φ$ becomes zero at $θ=θ_{\rm conf} < 2π/3$ for small $T$. The confinement phase defined by $Φ=0$ is realized, even if the system does not have $\mathbb{Z}_{3…
I discuss the deconfinement transition in 2+1 flavor QCD in terms of Polyakov loops as well as the hadron resonance gas for hadrons containing static quarks and charm quarks.
We study the deconfinement transition of hadronic matter into quark matter in neutron star conditions in the light of color superconductivity. Deconfinement is considered to be a first order phase transition that conserves color and flavor. It gives a short-lived {($τ\sim τ_{weak}$)} transitory colorless-quark-phase that is {\it not} in $β$-equilibrium. We deduce the equations governing deconfinement when quark pairing is allowed and find the regions of the parameter space (pairing gap $Δ$ versus bag constant $B$) where deconfinement is possible inside cold neutron stars. We show that for a wi…
We give another derivation of quark confinement in QCD from the viewpoint of the low-energy effective Abelian gauge theory of QCD obtained via Abelian projection. It is based on the recently discovered Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition in the four-dimensional Abelian gauge theory. Moreover, we show that there exists a critical gauge coupling constant in QCD, above which confinement set in and below which there is no confinement. In a SU(N) gauge theory with $N_f$ flavored fermions, we argue that this leads to a critical value of fermion flavors $N_f^c$ for the confinement as wel…
We present results on the chiral and deconfinement properties of the QCD transition at finite temperature. Calculations are performed with 2+1 flavors of quarks using the p4, asqtad and HISQ/tree actions. Lattices with temporal extent N_tau=6, 8 and 12 are used to understand and control discretization errors and to reliably extrapolate estimates obtained at finite lattice spacings to the continuum limit. The chiral transition temperature is defined in terms of the phase transition in a theory with two massless flavors and analyzed using O(N) scaling fits to the chiral condensate and susceptibi…
By using the dressed Polyakov loop or dual chiral condensate as an equivalent order parameter of the deconfinement phase transition, we investigate the relation between the chiral and deconfinement phase transitions at finite temperature and density in the framework of three-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. It is found that in the chiral limit, the critical temperature for chiral phase transition coincides with that of the dressed Polyakov loop in the whole $(T,μ)$ plane. In the case of explicit chiral symmetry breaking, it is found that the phase transitions are flavor dependent. For e…
The Polyakov-quark-meson (PQM) model, which combines chiral as well as deconfinement aspects of strongly interacting matter is introduced for three light quark flavors. An analysis of the chiral and deconfinement phase transition of the model and its thermodynamics at finite temperatures is given. Three different forms of the effective Polyakov loop potential are considered. The findings of the (2+1)-flavor model investigations are confronted to corresponding recent QCD lattice simulations of the RBC-Bielefeld, HotQCD and Wuppertal-Budapest collaborations. The influence of the heavier quark ma…
The interaction potential between a pair of heavy quarks is calculated with resummed perturbation method in Gribov-Zwanziger approach at finite temperature. The resummed loop correction makes the potential complex. While the real part is, as expected, screened and becomes short-ranged in hot medium, the strength of the imaginary part increases with temperature and is comparable with the real part, which is very different from the previous calculation in HTL approach. This means that, both the color screening and Landau damping play important role in the dissociation of heavy flavor hadrons in …
Exploiting the recent lattice results for the infrared gluon propagator with light dynamical quarks, we solve the gap equation for the quark propagator. We thus model the chiral symmetry breaking mechanism with increasing number of flavours and study confinement (intimately tied with the analytic properties of QCD Schwinger functions) order parameters. We obtain, with this approach, clear signals of chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement when the number of light quark flavors exceeds a critical value of $N_f^c \approx 8 \pm 1$, in agreement with the state-of-the-art direct lattice analy…
Effects of energy dissipation on quantum nucleation of two-flavor quark matter in dense nuclear matter encountered in neutron star cores are examined at low temperatures. We find that low-energy excitations of nucleons and electrons reduce the nucleation rate exponentially via their collisions with the surface of a quark matter droplet.
We study the deconfinement transition of hadronic matter into quark matter under neutron star conditions assuming color and flavor conservation during the transition. We use a two-phase description. For the hadronic phase we use different parameterizations of a non-linear Walecka model which includes the whole baryon octet. For the quark matter phase we use an SU(3)_f Nambu-Jona-Lasinio effective model including color superconductivity. Deconfinement is considered to be a first order phase transition that conserves color and flavor. It gives a short-lived transitory colorless-quark-phase that …
We investigate the effect of a homogeneous magnetic field on the thermal deconfinement transition of QCD in the large $N_c$ limit. First we discuss how the critical temperature decreases due to the inclusion of $N_f \ll N_c$ flavors of massless quarks. Then we study the equivalent correction in the presence of an external Abelian magnetic field. To leading order in $N_{f}/N_{c}$, the fact that the deconfinement critical temperature decreases with the magnetic field depends solely on quarks behaving paramagnetically. Finally, we discuss the effects from a finite quark mass and its competition w…
Diagonal and off-diagonal flavor and conserved charge susceptibilities reveal the prevalent degrees of freedom of heated strongly interacting matter. Results obtained from lattice simulations are compared with various model estimates in an effort to weed down various possible pictures of a quark gluon plasma. We argue that the vanishing of the off-diagonal quark flavor susceptibilities and its derivatives with respect to chemical potential, at temperatures above 1.5Tc, can only be understood in a picture of a gas or liquid composed of quasi-particles which carry the same quantum numbers as qua…
The phase structure of the two-flavor Polyakov-loop extended Nambu-Jona-Lashinio model is explored at finite temperature and imaginary chemical potential with a particular emphasis on the confinement-deconfinement transition. We point out that the confined phase is characterized by a $\cos3μ_I/T$ dependence of the chiral condensate on the imaginary chemical potential while in the deconfined phase this dependence is given by $\cosμ_I/T$ and accompanied by a cusp structure induced by the Z(3) transition. We demonstrate that the phase structure of the model strongly depends on the choice of the P…
We report on a lattice QCD calculation with two dynamical flavors of the isovector vector correlator in the high-temperature phase. We analyze the correlator in terms of the associated spectral function by performing a fit for the difference of the thermal and vacuum spectral functions, using also an exact sum rule that constrains this difference. Additonally we carry out a direct fit for the thermal spectral function, and obtain good agreement between the two analyses for frequencies below the two-pion threshold. Under the assumption that the spectral function is smooth in that region, we giv…
We consider the position of the deconfining critical endpoint, where the first order transition for deconfinement is washed out by the presence of massive, dynamical quarks. We use an effective matrix model, employed previously to analyze the transition in the pure glue theory. If the param- eters of the pure glue theory are unaffected by the presence of dynamical quarks, and if the quarks only contribute perturbatively, then for three colors and three degenerate quark flavors this quark mass is very heavy, m_de \sim 2.5 GeV, while the critical temperature, T_de, barely changes, \sim 1% below …
We compute and analyze correlation functions in the isovector vector channel at vanishing spatial momentum across the deconfinement phase transition in lattice QCD. The simulations are carried out at temperatures $T/T_c=0.156, 0.8, 1.0, 1.25$ and $1.67$ with $T_c\simeq203$MeV for two flavors of Wilson-Clover fermions with a zero-temperature pion mass of $\simeq270$MeV. Exploiting exact sum rules and applying a phenomenologically motivated ansatz allows us to determine the spectral function $ρ(ω,T)$ via a fit to the lattice correlation function data. From these results we estimate the electrica…
We report on investigations of the chiral and deconfinement aspects of the finite temperature transition in 2+1 flavor QCD using the Highly Improved Staggered Quark (HISQ) action on lattices with temporal extent $N_τ=6$ and $N_τ=8$. We have performed the calculations for physical values of the strange quark mass $m_s$ and the light quark masses $m_l=0.2m_s$ and $0.05m_s$. Several finite temperature observables, including the renormalized Polyakov loop, the renormalized chiral condensate and the chiral susceptibility have been calculated. We also study the fluctuations and correlations of diffe…
Using the formalism of general relativity for axially symmetric gravitational fields and their sources - rotating compact stars - a perturbation theory with respect to angular velocity is developed and physical quantities such as mass, shape, momentum of inertia and total energy of the star are defined. The change of the internal structure of the star due to rotation has been investigated and the different contributions to the moment of inertia have been evaluated separately. Numerical solutions have been performed using a two-flavor model equation of state describing the deconfinement phase t…
Dilepton production from hot, dense and magnetized quark matter is studied using the three-flavor Polyakov loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model in which the anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) of the quarks is also taken into consideration. This is done by first evaluating the thermo-magnetic spectral function of the vector current correlator employing the real time formalism of finite temperature field theory and the Schwinger proper time formalism. The constituent quark mass which goes as an input in the expression of the dilepton production rate (DPR), has been calculated using the th…
Because the properties of the QCD phase transition and the chiral magnetic effect (CME) depend on the number of quark flavors ($N_{f}$) and quark mass, relativistic heavy-ion collisions provide a natural environment to investigate the flavor features if quark deconfinement occurs. We introduce an initial two-flavor or three-flavor dipole charge separation into a multiphase transport (AMPT) model to investigate the flavor dependence of the CME. By taking advantage of the recent ALICE data of charge azimuthal correlations with identified hadrons, we attempt to disentangle two-flavor and three-fl…
The phase diagram at finite temperature and density is investigated in the framework of the Polyakov linear sigma model (PLSM) with three light quark flavors in the mean field approximation. It is found that in the PLSM, the three phase transitions, i.e, the chiral restoration of $u,d$ quarks, the chiral restoration of $s$ quark, and the deconfinement phase transition are independent. There exists two-flavor quarkyonic phase at low density and three-flavor quarkyonic phase at high density. The critical end point (CEP) which separating the crossover from the first-order line in the PLSM model i…
We study the effect of color superconductivity and neutrino trapping on the deconfinement transition of hadronic matter into quark matter in a protoneutron star. To describe the strongly interacting matter a two-phase picture is adopted. For the hadronic phase we use different parameterizations of a non-linear Walecka model which includes the whole baryon octet. For the quark matter phase we use an $SU(3)_f$ Nambu-Jona-Lasinio effective model which includes color superconductivity. We impose color and flavor conservation during the transition in such a way that just deconfined quark matter is …
In this paper, we use a three flavor non-local Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model, an~improved effective model of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) at low energies, to investigate the existence of deconfined quarks in the cores of neutron stars. Particular emphasis is put on the possible existence of quark matter in the cores of rotating neutron stars (pulsars). In contrast to non-rotating neutron stars, whose particle compositions do not change with time (are frozen in), the type and structure of the matter in the cores of rotating neutron stars depends on the spin frequencies of these stars, which o…
We apply the three-flavor (Polyakov-)Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model to generate baryons as quark-diquark bound states using many-body techniques at finite temperature. All the baryonic states belonging to the octet and decuplet flavor representations are generated in the isospin-symmetric case. For each state we extract the melting temperature at which the baryon may decay into a quark-diquark pair. We seek for an evidence of the strangeness dependence of the baryon melting temperature as suggested by the statistical thermal models and supported by lattice-QCD results. A clear and robust signal for …
It was recently conjectured that, in SU(3) gauge theories with fundamental quarks, valence spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking is equivalent to condensation of local dynamical chirality and appearance of chiral polarization scale $Λ_{ch}$. Here we consider more general association involving the low-energy layer of chirally polarized modes which, in addition to its width ($Λ_{ch}$), is also characterized by volume density of participating modes ($Ω$) and the volume density of total chirality ($Ω_{ch}$). Few possible forms of the correspondence are discussed, paying particular attention to sing…
In this work I explore theoretical and phenomenological implications of chemical potentials and charge densities inside a strongly coupled thermal plasma, using the gauge/gravity correspondence. Strong coupling effects discovered in this model theory are interpreted geometrically and may be taken as qualitative predictions for heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. In particular I examine the thermodynamics, spectral functions, transport coefficients and the phase diagram of the strongly coupled plasma. For example stable mesons, which are the analogs of the QCD Rho-mesons, are found to survive…
Effective Lagrangians for Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) especially suited for understanding deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration at nonzero temperature and matter density are reviewed. These effective theories allow one to study generic properties of phase transitions using non-order parameter fields without loosing the information encoded in the true order parameter. {}For the pure gauge theory we demonstrate that, near the deconfining phase transition, the center group symmetry is naturally linked to the conformal anomaly. Another relevant outcome is that when the theory contains als…
We study the free energy of a static quark in QCD with 2+1 flavors in a wide temperature region, 116 MeV $< T < $ 5814 MeV, using the highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) action. We analyze the transition region in detail, obtain the entropy of a static quark, show that it peaks at temperatures close to the chiral crossover temperature and also revisit the temperature dependence of the Polyakov loop susceptibilities using gradient flow. We discuss the implications of our findings for the deconfinement and chiral crossover phenomena at physical values of the quark masses. Finally a comparison…
We study the three-body decay of the newly observed bottom baryon $Λ_b^*(6072)$ by LHCb; $Λ_b^*(6072) \to Λ_b ππ$. Its mass about 500 MeV above the ground state $Λ_b$ and a broad width imply that the state could be an analogue of the Roper resonance of the nucleon $N(1440)$. In terms of sequential processes going through $Σ_b$ and $Σ_b^*$, we find that the observed invariant mass distribution is reproduced assuming its spin and parity $J^P = 1/2^+$. We discuss that the ratio of the two sequential processes and angular correlation of two pions are useful for the determination of spin and parity…
Lattice simulations for (2+1)-flavor QCD with external magnetic field demonstrated that the quark mass is one of the important parameters responsible for the (inverse) magnetic catalysis. We discuss the dependences of chiral condensates and susceptibilities, the Polyakov loop on the magnetic field and quark mass in three degenerate flavor QCD. The lattice simulations are performed using standard staggered fermions and the plaquette action with spatial sizes Ns = 16 and 24 and a fixed temporal size Nt = 4. The value of the quark masses are chosen such that the system undergoes a first order chi…
We analyze the effect of color superconductivity in the transition from hot hadron matter to quark matter in the presence of a gas of trapped electron neutrinos. To describe strongly interacting matter we adopt a two-phase picture in which the hadronic phase is described by means of a non-linear Walecka model and just deconfined matter through the MIT bag model including color superconductivity. We impose flavor conservation during the transition in such a way that just deconfined quark matter is transitorily out of equilibrium with respect to weak interactions. Our results show that color sup…
The phase structure of two-flavor QCD is investigated at real isospin and imaginary quark chemical potentials by using the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. In the region, parity symmetry is spontaneously broken by the pion superfluidity phase transition, whereas charge-conjugation symmetry is spontaneously violated by the Roberge-Weiss transition. The chiral (deconfinement) crossover at zero isospin and quark chemical potentials is a remnant of the parity (charge-conjugation) violation. The interplay between the parity and charge-conjugation violations are analyzed, and it is …
We study two-color QCD with two flavors of Wilson fermion as a function of quark chemical potential mu and temperature T. We find evidence of a superfluid phase at intermediate mu and low T where the quark number density and diquark condensate are both very well described by a Fermi sphere of nearly-free quarks disrupted by a BCS condensate. Our results suggest that the quark contribution to the energy density is negative (and balanced by a positive gauge contribution), although this result is highly sensitive to details of the energy renormalisation. We also find evidence that the chiral cond…
We study the topological charge fluctuations of an SU(2) lattice gauge theory containing both N_f=2 and 4 flavors of Wilson fermion, at low temperature with non-zero chemical potential $μ$. The topological susceptibility, chi_T, is used to characterize differing physical regimes as mu is varied between the onset of matter at mu_o and and color deconfinement at mu_d. Suppression of instantons by matter via Debye screening is also investigated, revealing effects not captured by perturbative predictions. In particular, the breaking of scale invariance leads to the mean instanton size rho becoming…
We study heavy flavor properties at finite temperature in the framework of a relativistic potential model. With an improved method to solve the three-body Dirac equation, we determine a universal set of model parameters for both mesons and baryons by fitting heavy flavor masses in vacuum. Taking heavy quark potential from lattice QCD simulations in hot medium, we systematically calculate heavy flavor binding energies and averaged sizes as functions of temperature. The meson and baryons are separately sequentially dissociated in the quark-gluon plasma, and the mesons can survive at higher tempe…
We study dynamical chiral symmetry breaking for quarks in the fundamental representation of $SU(N_c)$ for $N_f$ number of light quark flavors. We also investigate the phase diagram of quantum chromodynamics at finite temperature $T$ and/or in the presence of a constant external magnetic field $eB$. The unified formalism for this analysis is provided by a symmetry-preserving Schwinger-Dyson equations treatment of a vector$\times$vector contact interaction model which encodes several well-established features of quantum chromodynamics to mimic the latter as closely as possible. Deconfinement and…
The flavor dependence of the QCD phase diagram presents universal properties in the heavy quark limit. For the wide class of models where the quarks are treated at the one-loop level, we show, for arbitrary chemical potential, that the flavor dependence of the critical quark masses-for which the confinement-deconfinement transition is second order-is insensitive to the details of the (confining) gluon dynamics and that the critical temperature is constant along the corresponding critical line. We illustrate this with explicit results in various such one-loop models studied in the literature: e…
It has been known for some time that compact stars containing quark matter can masquerade as neutron stars in the range of measured mass and radius, making it difficult to draw firm conclusions on the phases of matter present inside the star. Using the vector-enhanced Bag model (vBag), we examine mass-radius and mass-compactness relations with Maxwell and Gibbs construction for hybrid stars with transitions from nuclear matter to two or three-flavor quark matter, including sequential transitions. Not only can stable hybrid stars with either two or three-flavor quark matter mimic neutron stars …
We present results from a simulation of SU(2) lattice gauge theory with N_f=4 flavors of Wilson fermion and non-zero quark chemical potential mu, using the same 12^3x24 lattice, bare gauge coupling, and pion mass in cut-off units as a previous study with N_f=2. The string tension for N_f=4 is found to be considerably smaller implying smoother gauge field configurations. Thermodynamic observables and order parameters for superfluidity and color deconfinement are studied, and comparisons drawn between the two theories. Results for quark density and pressure as functions of mu are qualitatively s…
I present recent results from lattice simulations of SU(2) gauge theory with Nf=2 Wilson quark flavors, at non-zero quark chemical potential. The thermodynamic equation of state is discussed along with the nature of the high density matter which forms. It is conjectured that deconfinement may mean different things for bulk and Fermi surface phenomena.
This work presents an effective model for strongly interacting matter and the QCD equation of state (EoS). The model includes both hadron and quark degrees of freedom and takes into account the transition of chiral symmetry restoration as well as the deconfinement phase transition. At low temperatures $T$ and baryonic densities $ρ_B$ a hadron resonance gas is described using a SU(3)-flavor sigma-omega model and a quark phase is introduced in analogy to PNJL models for higher $T$ and $ρ_B$. In this way, the correct asymptotic degrees of freedom are used in a wide range of $T$ and $ρ_B$. Here, r…
Non-perturbative methods of effective field theory such like Lattice QCD have allowed to establish connection between the QCD Lagrangian and quark potential models, a prominent outcome being the Cornell (linear plus Coulomb) potential. In being quite successful in explaining properties of heavy flavor hadrons, be them quarkonia or baryons, this potential has been found less spectacular in the description of the non-strange baryons, the nucleon and the Delta. This behavior indicates that the one-gluon exchange and the flux-tube interaction do not fully account for the complexity of the dynamics…
We consider two-flavor asymmetric QCD combined with a low-energy effective model inspired by chiral perturbation theory and lattice data to investigate the effects of masses, isospin and baryon number on the pressure and the deconfinement phase transition. Remarkable agreement with lattice results is found for the critical temperature behavior. Further analyses of the cold, dense case and the influence of quark mass asymmetry are also presented.
Compact stars may contain quark matter in their interiors at densities exceeding several times the nuclear saturation density. We explore models of such compact stars where there are two first-order phase transitions: the first from nuclear matter to a quark-matter phase, followed at higher density by another first-order transition to a different quark matter phase [e.g., from the two-flavor color superconducting (2SC) to the color-flavor-locked (CFL) phase). We show that this can give rise to two separate branches of hybrid stars, separated from each other and from the nuclear branch by insta…

Lattice simulations have demonstrated that a background (electro)magnetic field reduces the chiral/deconfinement transition temperature of quantum chromodynamics for eB < 1 GeV^2. On the level of observables, this reduction manifests itself in an enhancement of the Polyakov loop and in a suppression of the light quark condensates (inverse magnetic catalysis) in the transition region. In this paper, we report on lattice simulations of 1+1+1-flavor QCD at an unprecedentedly high value of the magnetic field eB = 3.25 GeV^2. Based on the behavior of various observables, it is shown that even at th…

In the initial years of operation, experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) have identified a new form of matter formed in nuclei-nuclei collisions at energy densities more than 100 times that of a cold atomic nucleus. Measurements and comparison with relativistic hydrodynamic models indicate that the matter thermalizes in an unexpectedly short time, has an energy density at least 15 times larger than needed for color deconfinement, has a temperature about twice the critical temperature predicted by lattice QCD, and appears to exhibit collective motion with ideal hydrodynamic …
