I discuss the deconfinement transition in 2+1 flavor QCD in terms of Polyakov loops as well as the hadron resonance gas for hadrons containing static quarks and charm quarks.
Modifications in the production pattern of heavy quark bound states have long been considered to provide sensitive signatures for the thermal properties of dense matter created in heavy ion collisions. The original concept of Matsui and Satz for quarkonium suppression as signature for deconfinement in heavy ion collisions has been challenged recently through lattice studies of spectral functions, which indicate the persistence of heavy quark bound states at temperatures well above the transition, as well as through the refined analysis of hadronization and recombination models, which take into…
Using combined strong coupling and hopping parameter expansions, we derive an effective three-dimensional theory from thermal lattice QCD with heavy Wilson quarks. The theory depends on traced Polyakov loops only and correctly reflects the centre symmetry of the pure gauge sector as well as its breaking by finite mass quarks. It is valid up to certain orders in the lattice gauge coupling and hopping parameter, which can be systematically improved. To its current order it is controlled for lattices up to N_τ\sim 6 at finite temperature. For nonzero quark chemical potentials, the effective theor…
We have investigated hadron screening masses, the chiral condensate, and the pion decay constant close to the deconfinement phase transition in the confined phase of QCD. The simulations were done in the quenched approximation, on a lattice of size \mbox{$32^{3}\times 8$}. We examined temperatures ranging from $0.75\tc$ up to $0.92\tc$. We see no sign of a temperature dependence in the chiral condensate or the meson properties, but some temperature dependence for the nucleon screening mass is not excluded.
The equation of state of pure QCD, obtained from lattice QCD, is discussed for temperatures ranging from $0.9\tc$ to $4\tc$, as well as results on screening masses, the chiral condensate, and the pion decay constant close to the deconfinement phase transition in the confined phase of QCD. The equation of state differs significantly from that of a free gas. There is little evidence of a temperature dependence in the chiral condensate or the meson properties, but perhaps some for the nucleon screening mass. Above the phase transition one sees non-perturbative effects, even though hadron correlat…
The flux tube model offers a pictorial description of what happens during the deconfinement phase transition in QCD. The 3-point vertices of a flux tube network lead to formation of baryons upon hadronisation. Therefore, correlations in the baryon number distribution at the last scattering surface are related to the preceding pattern of the flux tube vertices, and provide a signature of the nearby deconfinement phase transition. I discuss the nature of the expected signal, which should be observable in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC.
Pure SU(3) glue theories exhibit a deconfining phase transition at a nonzero temperature, Tc. Using lattice measurements of the pressure, we develop a simple matrix model to describe the transition region, when T > Tc. This model, which involves three parameters, is used to compute the behavior of the 't Hooft loop. There is a Higgs phase in this region, where off diagonal color modes are heavy, and diagonal modes are light. Lattice measurements of the latter suggests that the transition region is narrow, extending only to about 1.2 Tc. This is in stark contrast to lattice measurements of the …
Lattice QCD indicates a large amount of entropy associated with the heavy quark-antiquark pair immersed in the quark-gluon plasma. This entropy grows as a function of the inter-quark distance giving rise to an entropic force that can be very effective in dissociating the bound quarkonium states. In addition, the lattice data show a very sharp peak in the heavy quark-antiquark entropy at the deconfinement transition. Since the quark-gluon plasma around the deconfinement transition is strongly coupled, we employ the holographic correspondence to study the entropy associated with the heavy quark-…
Using non-perturbative lattice method we studied hadronic screening correlators above and immediately below the deconfinement transition temperature, Tc, in the quenched approximation with lattice spacing of 1/(8T) using clover improved Wilson fermions. Simulations were performed at temperatures T /Tc = 0, 0.95 and 1.5. Mesonic screening correlators show no statistically significant thermal effects below Tc, and clear evidence for weakly interacting quarks above Tc . Baryon screening correlators yield similar physics above Tc, but show precursor effects for chiral symmetry restoration below Tc…
Effective three-dimensional Polyakov loop theories derived from QCD by strong coupling and hopping expansions are valid for heavy quarks and can also be applied to finite chemical potential $μ$, due to their considerably milder sign problem. We apply the Monte-Carlo method to the $N_f=1,2$ effective theories up to $\mathcal{O}(κ^4)$ in the hopping parameter at $μ=0$ to determine the critical quark mass, at which the first-order deconfinement phase transition terminates. The critical end point obtained from the effective theory to order $\mathcal{O}(κ^2)$ agrees well with 4-dimensional QCD simu…
We study the temperature dependence of bottomonium for temperatures in the range $0.4 T_c < T < 2.1 T_c$, using nonrelativistic dynamics for the bottom quark and full relativistic lattice QCD simulations for $N_f=2$ light flavors on a highly anisotropic lattice. We find that the $Υ$ is insensitive to the temperature in this range, while the $χ_b$ propagators show a crossover from the exponential decay characterizing the hadronic phase to a power-law behaviour consistent with nearly-free dynamics at $T \simeq 2 T_c$.
Starting from Wilson's action, we calculate strong coupling series for the Polyakov loop susceptibility in lattice gauge theories for various small N_τin the thermodynamic limit. Analysing the series with Padé approximants, we estimate critical couplings and exponents for the deconfinement phase transition. For SU(2) pure gauge theory our results agree with those from Monte-Carlo simulations within errors, which for the coarser N_τ=1,2 lattices are at the percent level. For QCD we include dynamical fermions via a hopping parameter expansion. On a N_τ=1 lattice with N_f=1,2,3, we locate the sec…
Since the initial investigation by Matsui and Satz heavy quark bound states at finite temperature have been subject to numerous studies. The derivation of a finite-temperature potential from first principles was attempted only recently however, by generalising the Schroedinger equation which is successfully employed for the description of quarkonia at zero temperature to a thermal setting. In this note the finite-temperature static potential is derived to leading order using resummed perturbation theory. The modification of the heavy quarkonium spectral function by an imaginary part of the pot…
We study the quark mass dependence of the QCD phase transition by an effective potential defined through the distribution function of observables. As a test of the method, we study the first order deconfinement phase transition in the heavy quark mass limit and its fate at lighter quark masses. We confirm that the distribution function for the plaquette has two peaks indicating that the phase transition is of first order in the heavy quark limit. We then study the quark mass dependence of the distribution function by a reweighting method combined with the hopping parameter expansion. We find t…

We present possible indications for flavor separation during the QCD crossover transition based on continuum extrapolated lattice QCD calculations of higher order susceptibilities. We base our findings on flavor specific quantities in the light and strange quark sector. We propose a possible experimental verification of our prediction, based on the measurement of higher order moments of identified particle multiplicities. Since all our calculations are performed at zero baryochemical potential, these results are of particular relevance for the heavy ion program at the LHC.
It is expected that nucleons and their parity partners become degenerate when chiral symmetry is restored. We investigate this question in the context of the thermal transition from the hadronic phase to the quark-gluon plasma, using lattice QCD simulations with N_f=2+1 flavours. We observe a clear sign of parity doubling in the quark-gluon plasma. Besides, we find that the nucleon ground state is, within the uncertainty, largely independent of the temperature, whereas temperature effects are substantial in the negative-parity (N^*) channel, already in the confined phase.
We study the deconfinement transition line in QCD for quark chemical potentials up to $μ_q \sim 5 T$ ($μ_B \sim 15 T$). To circumvent the sign problem we use the complex Langevin equation with gauge cooling. The plaquette gauge action is used with two flavors of naive Wilson fermions at a relatively heavy pion mass of roughly 1.3 GeV. A quadratic dependence describes the transition line well on the whole chemical potential range.
To understand the phase transition phenomena, information theoretical approaches can pick up some important properties of the phenomena based on the probability distribution. In this paper, we show information theoretical aspects of the 3-dimensional 3-state Potts model with the external field which is corresponding to the QCD effective model with heavy quarks. The transfer mutual information which represents the information flow of two spin variables is numerically estimated based on the Markov-chain Monte-Carlo method. The transfer mutual information has the peak near the confinement-deconfi…
A phase of strong interacting matter with deconfined quarks is expected in the core of massive neutron stars. In this article, we perform a study of the hadron-quark phase transition in cold (T = 0) neutron star matter and we calculate various structural properties of hybrid stars. For the quark phase, we make use of an equation of state (EOS) derived with the field correlator method (FCM) recently extended to the case of nonzero baryon density. For the hadronic phase, we consider both pure nucleonic and hyperonic matter, and we derive the corresponding EOS within a relativistic mean field app…
Binder liked ratios of baryon number are firstly suggested in relativistic heavy ion collisions. Using 3D-Ising model, the critical behavior of Binder ratios and ratios of high order cumulants of order parameter are fully presented. Binder ratio is shown to be a step function of temperature. The critical point is the intersection of the ratios of different system sizes between two platforms. From low to high temperature through the critical point, the ratios of third order cumulants change their values from negative to positive in a valley shape, and ratios of fourth order cumulants oscillate …
At zero temperature the negative-parity ground states of the nucleon and delta baryons are non-degenerate with the positive-parity partners due to spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry. However, chiral symmetry is expected to be restored at sufficiently high temperature, in particular when going from the hadronic to the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) phase. This would imply that channels with opposite parity become degenerate. We study the nucleon (spin $1/2$) and $Δ$ (spin $3/2$) baryons in both parity sectors using lattice QCD. The range of temperatures spans both the hadronic and QGP phases. Us…
In this paper we propose an effective description of the transition to deconfinement in the vicinity of a black hole. For this we adapt the approach that uses the dual quark condensate as order parameter for confinement, originally introduced in the context of lattice QCD, to a strongly interacting fermion effective field theory propagating on a curved background. We construct numerically the dual condensate and determine approximately the region of the deconfined phase. The present analysis suggests that quarks will be radiated directly by Hawking emission, while hadrons will form at the boun…
At high temperatures or densities, hadronic matter shows different forms of critical behaviour: colour deconfinement, chiral symmetry restoration, and diquark condensation. I first discuss the conceptual basis of these phenomena and then consider the description of colour deconfinement in terms of symmetry breaking, through colour screening and as percolation transition.
We analyse the behaviour of hyperons with strangeness $S=-1$,$-2$,$-3$ in the hadronic and quark gluon plasma phases, with particular interest in parity doubling and its emergence as the temperature grows. This study uses our FASTSUM anisotropic $N_f\!\!=$~2+1 ensembles, with four temperatures below and four above the deconfinement transition temperature, $T_c$. The positive-parity groundstate masses are found to be largely temperature independent below $T_c$, whereas the negative-parity ones decrease considerably as the temperature increases. Close to the transition, the masses are almost deg…
Possible phase transition of strongly interacting matter from hadron to a Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) state have in the p ast received considerable interest. It has been suggested that this problem might be treated by percolation theory. Th e Color String Percolation Model (CSPM) is used to determine the equation of state (EOS) of the QGP produced in central Au-Au collisions at RHIC energies. The bulk thermodynamic quantities- energy density, entropy density and t he sound velocity- are obtained in the framework of CSPM. It is shown that the results are in excellent agreement with the recent latt…
Analyzing correlation functions of charmonia at finite temperature ($T$) on $32^3\times(32-96)$ anisotropic lattices by the maximum entropy method (MEM), we find that $J/ψ$ and $η_c$ survive as distinct resonances in the plasma even up to $T \simeq 1.6 T_c$ and that they eventually dissociate between $1.6 T_c$ and $1.9 T_c$ ($T_c$ is the critical temperature of deconfinement). This suggests that the deconfined plasma is non-perturbative enough to hold heavy-quark bound states. The importance of having sufficient number of temporal data points in the MEM analysis is also emphasized.
In this work we analyse positive- and negative-parity channels for the nucleon (spin $1/2$ octet), $Δ$ and $Ω$ baryons (spin $3/2$ decuplet) using lattice QCD. In Nature, at zero temperature, chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken, causing positive- and negative-parity ground states to have different masses. However, chiral symmetry is expected to be restored (for massless quarks) around the crossover temperature, implying that the two opposite parity channels should become degenerate. Here we study what happens in a temperature range which includes both the hadronic and the quark gluon plasm…
We extend previous work on dynamical AdS/QCD models by introducing an extra ingredient under the form of a background magnetic field, this to gain insight into the influence such field can have on crucial QCD observables. Therefore, we construct a closed form analytic solution to an Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system with a magnetic field. We specifically focus on the deconfinement transition, reporting inverse magnetic catalysis, and on the string tension, reporting a weaker/stronger confinement along/perpendicular to the magnetic field. The latter, being of importance to potential modelling of …
It is expected that the only effect of heavy dynamical fermions in QCD is to renormalize the gauge coupling. We derive a simple expression for the shift in the gauge coupling induced by $N_f$ flavors of heavy fermions. We compare this formula to the shift in the gauge coupling at which the confinement-deconfinement phase transition occurs (at fixed lattice size) from numerical simulations as a function of quark mass and $N_f$. We find remarkable agreement with our expression down to a fairly light quark mass. However, simulations with eight heavy flavors and two light flavors show that the eig…
A lot of effort in lattice simulations over the last years has been devoted to studies of the QCD deconfinement transition. Most state-of-the-art simulations use rooted staggered fermions, while Wilson fermions are affected by large systematic uncertainties, such as coarse lattices or heavy sea quarks. Here we report on an ongoing study of the transition, using two degenerate flavours of nonperturbatively $\Ord(a)$ improved Wilson fermions. We start with $N_{t}=12$ and 16 lattices and pion masses of 600 to 450 MeV, aiming at chiral and continuum limits with light quarks.
Heavy quark potentials are investigated at high temperatures. The temperature range covered by the analysis extends from $T$ values just below the deconfinement temperature up to about $4 T_c$ in the deconfined phase. We simulated the pure gauge sector of QCD on lattices with temporal extents of 4, 6 and 8 with spatial volumes of $32^3$. On the smallest lattice a tree level improved action was employed while in the other two cases the standard Wilson action was used. Below $T_c$ we find a temperature dependent logarithmic term contributing to the confinement potential and observe a string tens…
