We report a scanning tunneling spectroscopy investigation of polycrystalline SmFeAsO0.85 having a superconducting transition at 52 K. On large regions of the sample surface the tunneling spectra exhibited V-shaped gap structures with no coherence peaks, indicating degraded surface properties. In some regions, however, the coherence peaks were clearly observed, and the V-shaped gaps could be fit to the theory of tunneling into a d-wave superconductor, yielding gap values between 8 to 8.5 meV, corresponding to the ratio 2D/KTc ~ 3.55 - 3.8, which is slightly above the BCS weak-coupling prediction. In other regions the spectra exhibited zero-bias conductance peaks, consistent with a d-wave order parameter symmetry.
We demonstrate the combination of scanning force microscopy and scanning tunneling spectroscopy in a local probe microscope operating at very low temperature (60 mK). This local probe uses a quartz tuning fork ensuring high tunnel junction stability. We performed the spatially-resolved spectroscopic study of a superconducting nano-circuit patterned on an insulating substrate. Significant deviations from the BCS prediction are observed.
We demonstrate Josephson tunneling in vacuum tunnel junctions formed between a superconducting scanning tunneling microscope tip and a Pb film, for junction resistances in the range 50-300 k$Ω$. We show that the superconducting phase dynamics is dominated by thermal fluctuations, and that the Josephson current appears as a peak centered at small finite voltages. In the presence of microwave fields (f=15.0 GHz) the peak decreases in magnitude and shifts to higher voltages with increasing rf power, in agreement with theory.
We propose a set of scanning tunneling microscopy experiments in which the surface of superconductor is scanned by a superconducting tip. Potential capabilities of such experimental setup are discussed. Most important anticipated results of such an experiment include the position-resolved measurement of the superconducting order parameter and the possibility to determine the nature of the secondary component of the order parameter at the surface. The theoretical description based on the tunneling Hamiltonian formalism is presented.
Superconducting scanning tunneling microscope tips have been fabricated with a high degree of reproducibility. The fabrication process relies on sequential deposition of superconducting Pb and a proximity-coupled Ag capping layer onto a Pt/Ir tip. The tips were characterized by tunneling into both normal-metal and superconducting films. The simplicity of the fabrication process, along with the stability and reproducibility of the tips, clear the way for tunneling studies with a well-characterized, scannable superconducting electrode.
Scanning tunneling microscopy can provide a probe for the detailed study of quasiparticle states in high-Tc superconductors. We propose that it can also be used to acquire specific information about impurity-induced quasiparticle states and the superconducting order-parameter structure. In particular, the local density of states is found to be sensitive to impurity-induced resonances and to the symmetry of the order parameter.
We present scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy measurements on a cleaved surface of the LaO0.9F0.1BiSe2 single crystals. Tunneling spectra show a finite local density of states at EF, which is consistent with metallic conductivity in bulk. In addition, the existence of the supermodulation running along the diagonal directions of Bi square lattice was revealed. The period of the supermodulation was about 3 to 5 times the length of the lattice constant. This period is close to that observed in LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2.
We present very low temperature (0.15 K) scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy experiments in the layered superconductor LaSb$_2$. We obtain topographic microscopy images with surfaces showing hexagonal and square atomic size patterns, and observe in the tunneling conductance a superconducting gap. We find well defined quasiparticle peaks located at a bias voltage comparable to the weak coupling s-wave BCS expected gap value (0.17 meV). The amount of states at the Fermi level is however large and the curves are significantly broadened. We find T$_c$ of 1.2 K by following the tunneling…
We present scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy of the newly discovered superconductor CaC$_6$. The tunneling conductance spectra, measured between 3 K and 15 K, show a clear superconducting gap in the quasiparticle density of states. The gap function extracted from the spectra is in good agreement with the conventional BCS theory with $Δ(0)$ = 1.6 $\pm$ 0.2 meV. The possibility of gap anisotropy and two-gap superconductivity is also discussed. In a magnetic field, direct imaging of the vortices allows to deduce a coherence length in the ab plane $ξ_{ab}\simeq$ 33 nm.
Motivated by recent experiments, we investigate Josephson scanning tunneling spectroscopy in an s-wave superconductor. We demonstrate that the spatial oscillations in the superconducting order parameter induced by defects can be spatially imaged through local measurements of the critical Josephson current, providing unprecedented insight into the nature of superconductivity. The spatial form of the Josephson current reflects the nature of the defects, and can be used to probe defect-induced phase transitions from an $S=0$ to an $S=1/2$ ground state.
We have developed a material specific theoretical framework for modelling scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) of high temperature superconducting materials in the normal as well as the superconducting state. Results for $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212) show clearly that the tunneling process strongly modifies the STS spectrum from the local density of states (LDOS) of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital of Cu. The dominant tunneling channel to the surface Bi involves the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals of the four neighbouring Cu atoms. In accord with experimental observations, the computed spectrum displays a…
Quasiparticle tunneling spectra of both hole-doped (p-type) and electron-doped (n-type) cuprates are studied using a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. The results reveal that neither the pairing symmetry nor the pseudogap phenomenon is universal among all cuprates, and that the response of n-type cuprates to quantum impurities is drastically different from that of the p-type cuprates. The only ubiquitous features among all cuprates appear to be the strong electronic correlation and the nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic Cu^{2+}-Cu^{2+} coupling in the CuO_2 planes.
We establish in a combination of ab initio theory and experiments that the tunneling process in scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy on the A-122 iron pnictide superconductors - in this case BaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ - involve a strong adatom filtering of the differential conductance from the near-EF Fe3d states, which in turn originates from the top-most sub-surface Fe layer of the crystal. The calculations show that the dominance of surface Ba-related tunneling pathways leaves fingerprints found in the experimental differential conductance data, including large particle-hole asymmetry a…
Recent angle-resolved photoemission and neutron scattering data have provided new ingredients for the interpretation of scanning tunneling spectra on Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$. We analyze the low-temperature tunneling spectra, from oxygen overdoped to underdoped samples, including details about the bilayer splitting and the neutron resonance peak. Two van Hove singularities are identified: the first is integrated in the coherence peaks, the second is heavily broadened at higher binding energy. The shape of the tunneling spectra suggests a strong coupling of the quasiparticles with a collec…
We have developed a method for the reproducible fabrication of superconducting scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tips. We use these tips to form superconductor/insulator/superconductor tunnel junctions with the STM tip as one of the electrodes. We show that such junctions exhibit fluctuation dominated Josephson effects, and describe how the Josephson product IcRn can be inferred from the junctions' tunneling characteristics in this regime. This is first demonstrated for tunneling into Pb films, and then applied in studies of single crystals of NbSe2. We find that in NbSe2, IcRn is lower than…
Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of thin epitaxial $SrRuO_{3}/(110)YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$ ferromagnet/superconductor bilayers, reveal a clear penetration of the Andreev bound states into the ferromagnetic layer. The penetration is manifested in the density of states of the ferromagnet as a split zero bias conductance peak with an imbalance between peak heights. Our data indicate that the splitting occurs at the superconductor side as a consequence of induced magnetization, confirming recent theoretical predictions. The imbalance is attributed to the spin polarization in the ferromagnet.
By spatially mapping the Doppler effect of an in-plane magnetic field on the quasiparticle tunneling spectrum, we have laterally imaged the vortex lattice in superconducting 2H-NbSe2. Cryomagnetic scanning tunneling spectroscopy was performed at 300 mK on the ab-surface oriented parallel to the field H. Conductance images at zero bias show stripe patterns running along H, with the stripe separation varying as H^-0.5. Regions of higher zero-bias conductance show lower gap-edge conductance, consistent with spectral redistribution by spatially-modulated superfluid momentum. Our results are interp…
We present the first scanning tunneling spectroscopy study on the Chevrel phase PbMo6S8, an extreme type II superconductor with a coherence length only slightly larger than in high-Tc cuprates. Tunneling spectra measured on atomically flat terraces are spatially homogeneous and show well-defined coherence peaks. The low-energy spectral weight, the zero bias conductance and the temperature dependence of the gap are incompatible with a conventional isotropic s-wave interpretation, revealing the presence of low-energy excitations in the superconducting state. We show that our data are consistent …
We discuss how variations in the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip, whether unintentional or intentional, can lead to changes in topographic images and dI/dV spectra. We consider the possibility of utilizing functionalized tips in order to improve the sensitivity of STM experiments to local irregularities at the surface or hidden below the surface layers. The change in the tip symmetry can radically alter the contrast of the topographic image due to changes in tip-surface overlap. The dI/dV curves change their shape according to which sample bands the tip orbital tends to overlap. In add…
Scanning tunneling spectroscopy on gold layers over-coating \textit{c}-axis $YBa_2Ca_3O_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) films reveals proximity induced gap structures. The gap size reduced exponentially with distance from \textit{a}-axis facets, indicating that the proximity effect is primarily due to the (100) YBCO facets. The penetration depth of superconductivity into the gold is $\sim 30$ nm, in good agreement with estimations for the dirty limit. The extrapolated gap at the interface is $\sim 15$ meV, consistent with recent point-contact experiments. The proximity-induced order parameter appears to have pr…
A scanning tunneling microscope is used to explore the evolution of electron and Cooper pair transport across single Mn-phthalocyanine molecules adsorbed on Pb(111) from tunneling to contact ranges. Normal-metal as well as superconducting tips give rise to a gradual transition of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer energy gap in the tunneling range into a zero-energy resonance close to and at contact. Supporting transport calculations show that in the normal-metal - superconductor junctions this resonance reflects the merging of in-gap Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states as well as the onset of Andreev reflecti…
The type I superconductor lead (Pb) has been theoretically predicted to be a two-band superconductor. We use scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) to resolve two superconducting gaps with an energy difference of 150$\,μ$eV. Tunneling into Pb(111), Pb(110) and Pb(100) crystals reveals a strong dependence of the two coherence peak intensities on the crystal orientation. We show that this is the result of a selective tunneling into the two bands at the energy of the two coherence peaks. This is further sustained by the observation of signatures of the Fermi sheets in differential conductance maps…
The superconducting compound, LiFeAs, is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. A gap map of the unreconstructed surface indicates a high degree of homogeneity in this system. Spectra at 2 K show two nodeless superconducting gaps with $Δ_1=5.3\pm0.1$ meV and $Δ_2=2.5\pm0.2$ meV. The gaps close as the temperature is increased to the bulk $T_c$ indicating that the surface accurately represents the bulk. A dip-hump structure is observed below $T_c$ with an energy scale consistent with a magnetic resonance recently reported by inelastic neutron scattering.
We report on the temperature dependence of the impurity-induced resonant state in Zn-doped Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O$_{8+δ}$ by scanning tunneling spectroscopy at 30 mK < T < 52 K. It is known that a Zn impurity induces a sharp resonant peak in tunnel spectrum at an energy close to the Fermi level. We observed that the resonant peak survives up to 52 K. The peak broadens with increasing temperature, which is explained by the thermal effect. This result provides information to understand the origin of the resonant peak.
We present scanning tunneling microscopy measurements of the surface of superconducting MgB2 with a critical temperature of 39K. In zero magnetic field the conductance spectra can be analyzed in terms of the standard BCS theory with a smearing parameter Gamma. The value of the superconducting gap is 5.2 meV at 4.2 K, with no experimentally significant variation across the surface of the sample. The temperature dependence of the gap follows the BCS form, fully consistent with phonon-mediated superconductivity in this novel superconductor. The application of a magnetic field induces strong pair-…
We report on the results of scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements on single crystals of Mg2. Tunneling was performed both parallel and perpendicular to the crystalline c-axis. In the first case, a single superconducting gap (Delta_pi = 2.2 meV) associated with the pi-band is observed. Tunneling parallel to the ab-plane reveals an additional, larger gap (Delta_sigma ~ 7 meV) originating in the highly two-dimensional sigma-band. Vortex imaging in the pi-band was performed with the field and tunnel current parallel to the c-axis. The vortices have a large core size compared to estimates ba…
We report a characterization of surfaces of the dichalcogenide TaSe$_2$ using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S) at 150 mK. When the top layer has the 2H structure and the layer immediately below the 1T structure, we find a singular spatial dependence of the tunneling conductance below 1 K, changing from a zero bias peak on top of Se atoms to a gap in between Se atoms. The zero bias peak is additionally modulated by the commensurate $3a_0 \times 3a_0$ charge density wave of 2H-TaSe$_2$. Multilayers of 2H-TaSe$_2$ show a spatially homogeneous superconducting gap with a criti…
A series of MgB$_2$ thin films systematically disordered by neutron irradiation have been studied by Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy. The c-axis orientation of the films allowed a reliable determination of local density of state of the $π$ band. With increasing disorder, the conductance peak moves towards higher voltages and becomes lower and broader, indicating a monotonic increase of the $π$ gap and of the broadening parameter. These results are discussed in the frame of two-band superconductivity.
We observed surface and electronic structure of LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 single crystal by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) at 4.2 K. Square lattice composed of Bi atoms was observed at a positive sample bias voltage on the surface prepared by cleavage. At a negative sample bias voltage, a stripe structure running along Bi-Bi directions was observed as in the previous report on NdO0.7F0.3BiS2. Furthermore, we observed a supermodulation running along the diagonal directions with the period of about 5 times of the lattice constant. This seems to be indicative of structural instability…
The pseudogap (PG) state and its related intra-unit-cell symmetry breaking remain the focus in the research of cuprate superconductors. Although the nematicity has been studied in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$, especially underdoped samples, its behavior in other cuprates and different doping regions is still unclear. Here we apply a scanning tunneling microscope to explore an overdoped (Bi, Pb)$_2$Sr$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$ with a large Fermi surface (FS). The establishment of a nematic order and its real-space distribution is visualized as the energy scale approaches the PG.
Tunneling spectroscopy of epitaxial (100) oriented \chem{YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}} films was performed using an STM at 4.2 K. On atomically smooth areas, tunneling spectra revealing clear U-shaped gaps with relatively low zero bias conductance were measured. These spectra can be well fitted to the tunneling theory into a d-wave superconductor only when introducing a strong dependence of the tunneling probability on the wave-vector \emph{\textbf{k}}. Possible origins for this \emph{\textbf{k}}-selectivity in STM measurements will be discussed. On other areas, V-shaped gaps as well as zero bias conducta…
The tunneling path between the CuO2-layers in cuprate superconductors and a scanning tunneling microscope tip passes through a barrier made from other oxide layers. This opens up the possibility that inelastic processes in the barrier contribute to the tunneling spectra. Such processes cause one or possibly more peaks in the second derivative current-voltage spectra displaced by phonon energies from the density of states singularity associated with superconductivity. Calculations of inelastic processes generated by apical O-phonons show good qualitative agreement with recent experiments report…
We present a method to identify distinct tunneling modes in tunable superconducting tunnel junction composed of superconducting tip and sample in scanning tunneling microscope. Combining the measurement of the relative decay constant of tunneling current extracted from I-V-z spectroscopy with its statistical analysis over the atomic disorders in the sample surface, we identified the crossover of tunneling modes between single quasiparticle tunneling, multiple Andreev reflection, and Josephson tunneling with respect to the bias voltage. The method enables one to determine the particular tunneli…
We present Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy measurements at 0.1 K using tips made of Al. At zero field, the atomic lattice and charge density wave of 2HNbSe2 are observed, and under magnetic fields the peculiar electronic surface properties of vortices are precisely resolved. The tip density of states is influenced by the local magnetic field of the vortex, providing for a new probe of the magnetic field at nanometric sizes.
High--quality single crystals of the heavy fermion superconductors CeCoIn$_5$ and CeIrIn$_5$ have been studied by means of low--temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscopy. Methods were established to facilitate \textit{in-situ} sample cleaving. Spectroscopy in CeCoIn$_5$ reveals a gap which persists to above $T_c$, possibly evidencing a precursor state to SC. Atomically resolved topographs show a rearrangement of the atoms at the crystal surface. This modification at the surface might influence the surface properties as detected by tunneling spectroscopy.
Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy we examined the local density of states of thin c-axis La2-xSrxCuO4 films, over wide doping and temperature ranges. We found that the pseudogap exists only at doping levels lower than optimal. For x = 0.12, close to the 'anomalous' x = 1/8 doping level, a zero bias conductance peak was the dominant spectral feature, instead of the excepted V- shaped (c-axis tunneling) gap structure. We have established that this surprising effect cannot be explained by tunneling into (110) facets. Possible origins for this unique behavior are discussed.
We report current driven scanning tunneling spectroscopy (CDSTS) measurements at very low temperatures on vortices in 2H-NbSe2. We find that a current produces an increase of the density of states at the Fermi level in between vortices, and a reduction of the zero bias peak at the vortex center. This occurs well below the de-pairing current. We conclude that a supercurrent affects the low energy part of the superconducting gap structure of 2H-NbSe2.
We extract the density of states (DOS) from the scanning tunneling spectroscopy data for Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ superconductor. The obtained sample DOS is composed of two ordinary $s$-wave types from the band at $Γ$ point and a linear-like DOS within the $s$-wave gap from the band at M point in the Brillouin zone, and is consistent with the corresponding data from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We clarify that the major peak of the tunneling conductance is not related to the DOS but is rather the effect of nonequilibrium coherent tunneling including all coherent spins in the t…
We have imaged the current noise with atomic resolution in a Josephson scanning tunneling microscope with a Pb-Pb junction. By measuring the current noise as a function of applied bias, we reveal the change from single electron tunneling above the superconducting gap energy to double electron charge transfer below the gap energy when Andreev processes become dominant. Our spatially resolved noise maps show that this doubling occurs homogeneously on the surface, also on impurity locations, demonstrating that indeed the charge pairing is not influenced by disruptions in the superconductor smalle…
We report a reproducible technique for the fabrication of sharp superconducting Nb tips for scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Sections of Nb wire with 250 $μ$m diameter are dry etched in an SF$_6$ plasma in a Reactive Ion Etcher. The gas pressure, etching time and applied power are chosen to produce a self-sharpening effect to obtain the desired tip shape. The resulting tips are atomically sharp, with radii of less than 100 nm, and generate good STM images and spectroscopy on single crystal samples of Au(111), Au(100), and Nb(100), as well as a doped topo…
We report a detailed study of tunneling spectra measured on 2H-Ta$_x$Nb$_{1-x}$Se$_2$ ($x=0\sim 0.1$) single crystals using a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. The prominent gap-like feature unintelligible for a long time was found to be accompanied by some "in-gap" fine structures. By investigating the second-derivative spectra and their temperature and magnetic field dependencies, we were able to prove that inelastic electron tunneling is the origin of these features and obtain the Eliashberg function of 2H-Ta$_x$Nb$_{1-x}$Se$_2$ at atomic scale, providing a potential way to stu…
We perform the scanning tunneling spectroscopy based superconductor-vacuum-superconductor analogue to the seminal McMillan and Rowell superconductor-insulator-superconductor device study of phonons in the archetypal elemental superconductor Pb [W. L. McMillan and J. M. Rowell, Phys. Rev. Lett. 14, 108 (1965)]. We invert this spectroscopic data utilizing strong-coupling Eliashberg theory to obtain a local α^2F(ω) and find broad underlying agreement with the pioneering results, highlighted by previously unobserved electron-hole asymmetries and new fine structure which we discuss in terms of both…
Fourier transformation of atomically resolved STM topography of $(LaSe)_{1.14}(NbSe_2)$ revealed a surface modulation along the hexagonal surface lattice of $NbSe_2$ layer, but with a two times larger period. We compare it to the modified charge density wave found on plain $NbSe_2$ under strain.
In this brief note we repeat an earlier calculation of the Fourier transformed scanning tunneling spectra of the $d$-density wave (DDW) phase using a different band structure, which is more realistic and consistent with the angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data. We note that four peaks, which used to be located at $(\pm π/4,0)$ and $(0, \pm π/4)$, are still present, but at positive energies their wavevectors shift to the neighborhood of $(\pm 2 π/5,0)$, $(0, \pm 2π/5)$ and slowly disperse with energy. The implications for the sensitivity with respect to the band structure are …
We apply high resolution scanning tunneling microscopy to study intrinsic defect states of bulk FeSe. Four types of intrinsic defects including the type I dumbbell, type II dumbbell, top-layer Se vacancy and inner-layer Se-site defect are extensively analyzed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy. From characterized depression and enhancement of density of states measured in a large energy range, the type I dumbbell and type II dumbbell are determined to be the Fe vacancy and Se$_\mathrm{Fe}$ defect, respectively. The top-layer Se vacancy and possible inner-layer Se-site vacancy are also determin…
In this paper we present scanning tunneling microscopy of a large $\textrm{Bi}_2\textrm{Se}_3$ crystal with superconducting PbBi islands deposited on the surface. Local density of states measurements are consistent with induced superconductivity in the topological surface state with a coherence length of order 540 nm. At energies above the gap the density of states exhibits oscillations due to scattering caused by a nonuniform order parameter. Strikingly, the spectra taken on islands also display similar oscillations along with traces of the Dirac cone, suggesting an inverse topological proxim…
We present the main features of a home-built scanning tunneling microscope that has been attached to the mixing chamber of a dilution refrigerator. It allows scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy measurements down to the base temperature of the cryostat, T approx. 30mK, and in applied magnetic fields up to 13T. The topography of both highly-ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and the dichalcogenide superconductor NbSe2 have been imaged with atomic resolution down to T approx. 50mK as determined from a resistance thermometer adjacent to the sample. As a test for a successful operation in…
We studied the proximity effect between a superconductor (Nb) and a diluted ferromagnetic alloy (CuNi) in a bilayer geometry. We measured the local density of states on top of the ferromagnetic layer, which thickness varies on each sample, with a very low temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscope. The measured spectra display a very high homogeneity. The analysis of the experimental data shows the need to take into account an additional scattering mechanism. By including in the Usadel equations the effect of the spin relaxation in the ferromagnetic alloy, we obtain a good description of the ex…
Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has made tremendous progress in the study and understanding of both classical and unconventional superconductors. This has motivated a rapidly growing effort to apply the same techniques to the iron-based high-Tc superconductors since their discovery in 2008. Five years have brought exciting advances in imaging and spectroscopic investigation of this new class of materials. In this review, we focus on several recent STM contributions to the identification of the gap symmetry and pairing glue. We highlight the unique capabilities and challenges still ahead fo…
In two dimensions the non-interacting density of states displays a Van Hove singularity (VHS) which introduces an intrinsic electron-hole asymmetry, absent in three dimensions. We show that due to this VHS the strong-coupling analysis of tunneling spectra in high-$T_c$ superconductors must be reconsidered. Based on a microscopic model which reproduces the experimental data with great accuracy, we elucidate the peculiar role played by the VHS in shaping the tunneling spectra, and show that more conventional analyses of strong-coupling effects can lead to severe errors.
The proximity effect between a superconductor and a highly diffusive two-dimensional metal was revealed in a Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy experiment. The in-situ elaborated samples consisted of superconducting single crystalline Pb islands interconnected by a non-superconducting atomically thin disordered Pb wetting layer. In the vicinity of each superconducting island the wetting layer acquires specific tunneling characteristics which reflect the interplay between the proximity-induced superconductivity and the inherent electron correlations of this ultimate diffusive two-dimensional metal…
In the vortex core of slightly overdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox, the electron-like and hole-like states have been found to exhibit spatial modulations in anti-phase with each other along the Cu-O bonding direction. Some kind of one-dimensionality has been observed in the vortex core, and it is more clearly seen in differential conductance maps at lower biases below +-9 mV.
In the presence of an external magnetic field, the low lying elementary excitations of a d-wave superconductor have quantized energy and their momenta are locked near the node direction. It is argued that these discrete states can most likely be detected by a local probe, such as a scanning tunneling microscope. The low temperature local tunneling conductance on the Wigner-Seitz cell boundaries of the vortex lattice is predicted to show peaks spaced as $\pm \sqrt{n}, n ={0,1,2, ...}$. The $n=0$ peak is anomalous, and it is present only if the superconducting order parameter changes sign at cer…
