Assemblies of purely repulsive and frictionless particles, such as emulsions or hard spheres, display very curious properties near their jamming transition, which occurs at the random close packing for mono-disperse spheres. Although such systems do not contain the long and cross-linked polymeric chains characterizing a rubber, they behave macroscopically in a similar way: the shear modulus $G$ can become infinitely smaller than the bulk modulus $B$. After reviewing recent theoretical results on the structure of such packing (in particular their coordination) I will propose an explanation for the observed scaling of the elastic moduli, and explain why the arguments both apply to soft and hard particles.
The physical gelation of colloids produces elastic structures that are commonly used to stabilize complex fluids in multiple industries. However, the ability to control the level of elastic modulus of these materials is limited by the universality of the arrested spinodal decomposition mechanism that governs their formation. We demonstrate that manipulating particle shape can yield very large shifts in gel elasticity relative to this universal behavior, and that these changes are generated by a set of independent mechanisms that act multiplicatively. Modeling demonstrates that this efficient g…
In complex crystals close to melting or at finite temperatures, different types of defects are ubiquitous and their role becomes relevant in the mechanical response of these solids. Conventional elasticity theory fails to provide a microscopic basis to include and account for the motion of point-defects in an otherwise ordered crystalline structure. We study the elastic properties of a point-defect rich crystal within a first-principles theoretical framework derived from microscopic equations of motion. This framework allows us to make specific predictions pertaining to the mechanical properti…
We theoretically study the effect of external deformation on activated structural relaxation and elementary aspects of the nonlinear mechanical response of glassy hard sphere fluids in the context of the nonequilibrium version of the Elastically Collective Nonlinear Langevin Equation (ECNLE) theory. ECNLE theory describes activated relaxation as a coupled local-nonlocal event involving local caging and longer range collective elasticity, with the latter becoming more important with increasing packing fraction. The central new question is how this physical picture, and the relative importance o…

We propose a microscopic picture for understanding the nonlinear rheology of supercooled liquids with soft-repulsive potentials. Based on Brownian dynamics simulations of supercooled charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions, our analysis shows that the shear thinning of viscosity (eta) at large enough shear rates (sr), expressed as eta~sr^(-lambda), originates from the evolution of the localized elastic region (LER). An LER is a transient region composed of the first several coordination shells of a reference particle. In response to the external shear, particles within LER undergo nearly affin…
Soft colloids allow to explore high density states well beyond random close packing. An important open question is whether softness controls the dynamics under these dense conditions. While experimental works reported conflicting results, numerical studies so far mostly focused on simple models that allow particles to overlap, but neglect particle deformations, thus making the concept of softness in simulations and in experiments very different. To fill this gap here we propose a new model system consisting of polymer rings with internal elasticity. At high packing fractions the system display…
We study the dynamical steady-states of a monolayer of chemically active self-phoretic colloids as a function of packing fraction and self-propulsion speed by means of Brownian dynamics simulations. We focus on the case that a chemical field induces competing attractive positional and repulsive orientational interactions. Analyzing the distribution of cluster size and local density as well as the hexatic order parameter, we distinguish four distinct dynamical states which include collapsed, active gas, dynamical clustering, and motility-induced phase-separated states. The long-range chemical f…
We present a statistical mechanical description of randomly packed spherical particles, where the average coordination number is treated as a macroscopic thermodynamic variable. The overall packing entropy is shown to have two contributions: geometric, reflecting statistical weights of individual configurations, and topological, which corresponds to the number of topologically distinct states. Both of them are computed in the thermodynamic limit for isostatic packings in 2D and 3D, and the result is further expanded to the case of "floppy" particle clusters. The theory is directly applicable t…
