Particle tracking and displacement covariance matrix techniques are employed to investigate the phonon dispersion relations of two-dimensional colloidal glasses composed of soft, thermoresponsive microgel particles whose temperature-sensitive size permits \textit{in situ} variation of particle packing fraction. Bulk, $B$, and shear, $G$, moduli of the colloidal glasses are extracted from the dispersion relations as a function of packing fraction, and variation of the ratio $G/B$ with packing fraction is found to agree quantitatively with predictions for jammed packings of frictional soft particles. In addition, $G$ and $B$ individually agree with numerical predictions for frictional particles. This remarkable level of agreement enabled us to extract an energy scale for the inter-particle interaction from the individual elastic constants and to derive an approximate estimate for the inter-particle friction coefficient.
The rotational Brownian motion of colloidal spheres in dense suspensions reflects local hydrodynamics and friction, both key to non-linear rheological phenomena such as shear-thickening and jamming, and transport in crowded environments, including intracellular migration and blood flow. To fully elucidate the role of rotational dynamics experimentally, it is crucial to measure the translational and rotational motion of all spheres simultaneously. Here, we develop compositionally uniform colloidal spheres with an off-centre, fully embedded core with a different fluorophore to the particle body,…
We compare the structural and mechanical properties of mechanically stable (MS) packings of frictional disks in two spatial dimensions (2D) generated with isotropic compression and simple shear protocols from discrete element modeling (DEM) simulations. We find that the average contact number and packing fraction at jamming onset are similar (with relative deviations $< 0.5\%$) for MS packings generated via compression and shear. In contrast, the average stress anisotropy $\langle {\hat Σ}_{xy} \rangle = 0$ for MS packings generated via isotropic compression, whereas $\langle {\hat Σ}_{xy} \ra…
The postulate of the existence of a jamming phase diagram (Liu and Nagel, Nature 396, 21 EP (1998aa)) provides a theoretical basis for the classification of a wide range of amorphous solids (colloidal, molecular and emulsion glasses, colloidal and polymer gels, foams and granular matter) on the basis of whether these materials are in the jammed or unjammed state. Whilst such simple classification is appealing, it fails to capture that the criterion of rigidity of such amorphous solids may be defined with respect to a particular deformation orientation or mode (i.e. shear, extrusion, consolidat…
We show how rigidity emerges in experiments of sheared frictional granular materials by using generalizations of two methods for identifying rigid structures. Both approaches, the force-based dynamical matrix and the topology-based rigidity percolation, agree with each other and identify similar rigid structures. As the system becomes jammed, at a contact number of $z=2.4\pm 0.1$, a rigid backbone interspersed with floppy, particle-filled holes of a broad range of sizes emerges, creating a sponge-like morphology. We also find that the pressure within rigid structures always exceeds the pressur…
There is now convincing evidence that inter-particle frictional contacts are essential for observing shear-thickening in concentrated suspensions of compact particles. While this has inspired many strategies to tailor the rheology in these systems, in the more general case, viz-a-viz suspensions of anisotropic particles, the mechanism of shear-thickening remains unclear. Here through simultaneous measurements of the bulk viscosity and the first Normal stress difference, we show that strong shear thickening in suspensions of colloidal rods is accompanied by large positive normal stresses, indic…
We study the response to shear deformations of packings of long spherocylindrical particles that interact via frictional forces with friction coefficient $μ$. The packings are produced and deformed with the help of molecular dynamics simulations combined with minimization techniques performed on a GPU. We calculate the linear shear modulus $g_\infty$, which is orders of magnitude larger than the modulus $g_0$ in the corresponding frictionless system. The motion of the particles responsible for these large frictional forces is governed by and increases with the length $\ell$ of the spherocylind…
The packing and flow of aspherical frictional particles are studied using discrete element simulations. Particles are superballs with shape $|x|^{s}+|y|^{s}+|z|^{s} = 1$ that varies from sphere ($s=2$) to cube ($s=\infty$), constructed with an overlapping-sphere model. Both packing fraction, $ϕ$, and coordination number, $z$, decrease monotonically with microscopic friction $μ$, for all shapes. However, this decrease is more dramatic for larger $s$ due to a reduction in the fraction of face-face contacts with increasing friction. For flowing grains, the dynamic friction $\tildeμ$ - the ratio o…
Since the 1920s, packing arguments have been used to rationalize crystal structures in systems ranging from atomic mixtures to colloidal crystals. Packing arguments have recently been applied to complex nanoparticle structures, where they often, but not always, work. We examine when, if ever, packing is a causal mechanism in hard particle approximations of colloidal crystals. We investigate three crystal structures comprised of their ideal packing shapes. We show that, contrary to expectations, the ordering mechanism cannot be packing, even when the thermodynamically self-assembled structure i…
Dense, stabilized, frictional particulate suspensions in a viscous liquid undergo increasingly strong continuous shear thickening (CST) as the solid packing fraction, $ϕ$, increases above a critical volume fraction, and discontinuous shear thickening (DST) is observed for even higher packing fractions. Recent studies have related shear thickening to a transition from mostly lubricated to predominantly frictional contacts with the increase in stress. The rheology and networks of frictional forces from two and three-dimensional simulations of shear-thickening suspensions are studied. These are a…
Discontinuous shear-thickening in dense suspensions naturally emerges from the activation of frictional forces by shear flow in non-Brownian systems close to jamming. Yet, this physical picture is incomplete as most experiments study soft colloidal particles subject to thermal fluctuations. To characterise discontinuous shear-thickening in colloidal suspensions we use computer simulations to provide a complete description of the competition between athermal jamming, frictional forces, thermal motion, particle softness, and shear flow. We intentionally neglect hydrodynamics, electrostatics, lub…
This paper investigates whether in frictional granular packings, like in Hamiltonian amorphous elastic solids, the stress autocorrelation matrix presents long range anisotropic contributions just as elastic Green's functions. We find that in a standard model of frictional granular packing this is not the case. We prove quite generally that mechanical balance and material isotropy constrain the stress auto-correlation matrix to be fully determined by two spatially isotropic functions: the pressure and torque auto-correlations. The pressure and torque fluctuations being respectively normal and h…
In stark contrast to the jamming of frictionless hard-sphere (hard-disk if in two dimensions) packings, the critical jamming of frictional packings is much more elusive and still under intense debate. Here we show that frictional hard-disk packings self-organize near a critical jamming state when subjected to quasi-static steady-state cyclic shear, displaying scale-free fluctuations in particle velocity fields as characterized by the power spectra $E(k)\propto k^{-α}$ for both longitudinal and transverse modes in wavevector space, with $α\approx2.0\pm0.15$, and the nearly flat spectra $E(ω)\pr…
The transmission rules of interparticle forces between granular particles were analyzed, and a discrete packing model was proposed to calculate the static pressure at the bottom of granular material confined in a vertical column. The mechanical analysis and numerical simulation results indicate that the silo effect is caused by the frictional contacts between border particles and inner walls, the static pressure at the bottom depends on the external load initially, and then tends to a saturation pressure (Pn) in an exponential form. The saturation pressure (Pn) is positive linear related to th…

Transport properties of a hard-sphere colloidal fluid are investigated by Brownian dynamics simulations. We implement a novel algorithm for the time-dependent velocity-autocorrelation function (VACF) essentially eliminating the noise of the bare random motion. The measured VACF reveals persistent anti-correlations manifested by a negative algebraic power-law tail $t^{-5/2}$ at all densities. At small packing fractions, the simulations fully agree with the analytic low-density prediction, yet the amplitude of the tail becomes dramatically suppressed as the packing fraction is increased. The mod…
Formation mechanism of speed-dependent ice bandings in freezing colloidal suspensions, of significance in frost heaving and materials science, remains a mystery. With quantitative experiments, we propose a possible mechanism of speed-dependent ice bandings by focusing on the particle packing density and dynamic interface undercooling. The particle packing density ahead of the freezing interface decreases with increasing pulling speeds, attributed to the speed-dependent packing of particles. Through affecting the curvature undercooling of pore ices, the speed-dependent packing of particles can …
We present the Brownian dynamics simulation of active colloidal suspension in two dimensions, where the self-propulsion speed of a colloid is regulated according to the local density sensed by it. The role of concentration-dependent motility on the phase-separation of colloids and their dynamics is investigated in detail. Interestingly, the system phase separates at a very low packing fraction ($Φ\approx 0.125$) at higher self-propulsion speeds ($\text{Pe}$), which coexists with a homogeneous phase and attains long-range crystalline order beyond a transition point. The transition point is quan…
Packings of macroscopic granular chains capture some of the essential aspects of molecular polymer systems and have been suggested as a paradigm to understand the physics on a molecular scale. However, here we demonstrate that the interparticle friction $μ$ in granular chain packings, which has no counterpart in polymer systems, leads to a nontrivial yielding and rheological response. Based on discrete element simulations we study the nonlinear rheology of random packings of granular chains under large amplitude oscillatory shear. We find that the maximum stress and the penetration depth of th…
