Impulse formulations of Hall magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations are developed. The Lagrange invariance of a generalized ion magnetic helicity is established for Hall MHD. The physical implications of this Lagrange invariant are discussed. The discussion is then extended to compressible Hall MHD. Compressibility effects are shown not to affect, as to be expected, the physical implications of the generalized ion magnetic helicity Lagrange invariant.
Hall magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) with electron inertia is considered. A much wider class of equilibrium solutions and the concomitant self-organization aspects are discussed. The force-free field state B - J is shown to be a consequence of the triple Beltrami condition.
The purpose of this paper is to show that, thanks to the restoration of the legitimate connection between the current density and the plasma flow velocity in Hall magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), Kelvin's Circulation Theorem becomes valid in Hall MHD. The ion-flow velocity in the usual circulation integral is now replaced by the canonical ion-flow velocity.
Parker's formulation of isotopological plasma relaxation process in magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) is extended to Hall MHD. The torsion coefficient alpha in the Hall MHD Beltrami condition turns out now to be proportional to the "potential vorticity." The Hall MHD Beltrami condition becomes equivalent to the "potential vorticity" conservation equation in two-dimensional (2D) hydrodynamics if the Hall MHD Lagrange multiplier beta is taken to be proportional to the "potential vorticity" as well. The winding pattern of the magnetic field lines in Hall MHD then appears to evolve in the same way as "po…
In this work we numerically test a model of Hall magnetohydrodynamics in the presence of a strong mean magnetic field, the reduced Hall MHD model (RHMHD) derived by Gomez et al., with the addition of weak compressible effects. The main advantage of this model lies in the reduction of computational cost. Nevertheless, up until now the degree of agreement with the original Hall MHD system and the range of validity in a regime of turbulence was not established. In this work direct numerical simulations of three-dimensional Hall MHD turbulence in the presence of a strong mean magnetic field are co…
Axisymmetric relaxed states of a cylindrical plasma column are found analytically in both standard and Hall magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) by complete minimization of energy with constraints imposed by invariants inherent in corresponding models. It is shown that the relaxed state in Hall MHD is the force-free magnetic field with uniform axial flow and/or rigid azimuthal rotation. The relaxed states in standard MHD are more complex due to the coupling between velocity and magnetic field. Application of these states for reversed-field pinches (RFP) is discussed.
It is shown that incompressible spin quantum Hall magnetohydrodynamics allows an exact solution for the propagation of a circularly polarized electromagnetic wave. The solution is obtained assuming a condition between the fluid velocity and the magnetic field which eliminates the nonlinear terms in Maxwell equations. As a result of the coupling with spin, the propagation mode depends on the amplitude of the magnetic field. From the full solution, the limits of small and large wavenumber are studied obtaining linear and a nonlinear spin-modified modes.
\large{\bf Abstract-} Unsteady Hall Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) near a hyperbolic magnetic neutral line is investigated. An exact analytical solution describing a self-similar evolution is given. This solution shows a negligible impact on the current-sheet formation process near the hyperbolic magnetic neutral line at small times by the Hall effect but, subsequently, a quenching by the Hall effect of the finite-time singularity exhibited in ideal MHD and, hence a prevention of the current density blow-up at large times. The asymptotic result given by this time-dependent solution is in full quan…
We analyze the effect of the Hall term in the magnetohydrodynamic turbulence under a strong externally supported magnetic field, seeing how this changes the energy cascade, the characteristic scales of the flow and the dynamics of global magnitudes, with particular interest in the dissipation. Numerical simulations of freely evolving three-dimensional reduced magnetohydrodynamics (RHMHD) are performed, for different values of the Hall parameter (the ratio of the ion skin depth to the macroscopic scale of the turbulence) controlling the impact of the Hall term. The Hall effect modifies the tran…
Plasma density gradients are known to drive magnetic shocks in electron-magnetohydrodynamics (EMHD). Previous slab modeling has been extended to cylindrical modeling of radially imploding shocks. The main new effect of the cylindrical geometry is found to be a radial dependence in the speed of shock propagation. This is shown here analytically and in numerical simulations. Ion acceleration by the magnetic shock is shown to possibly become substantial, especially in the peaked structures that develop in the shock because of electron inertia.
A new sub-grid-scale model is developed for studying influences of the Hall term on macroscopic aspects of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. Although the Hall term makes numerical simulations extremely expensive by exciting high-wave-number coefficients and makes magnetohydrodynamic equations stiff, studying macroscopic aspects of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence together with the Hall term is meaningful since this term often influences not only sub-ion-scales but also macroscopic scales. A new sub-ion-scale sub-grid-scale model for large eddy simulations of Hall magnetohydrodynamic turbulence is …
The dynamics of an incompressible, dissipationless Hall magnetohydrodynamic medium are investigated from Lagrangian mechanical viewpoint. The hybrid and magnetic helicities are shown to emerge, respectively, from the application of the particle relabeling symmetry for ion and electron flows to Noether's first theorem, while the constant of motion associated with the theorem is generally given by their arbitrary linear combination. Furthermore, integral path variation associated with the invariant action is expressed by the operation of an integro-differential operator on the reference path. Th…
Many linear stability aspects in plasmas are heavily influenced by non-ideal effects beyond the basic ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) description. Here, the extension of the modern open-source MHD spectroscopy code Legolas with viscosity and the Hall current is highlighted and benchmarked on a stringent set of historic and recent findings. The viscosity extension is demonstrated in a cylindrical setup featuring Taylor-Couette flow and in a viscoresistive plasma slab with a tearing mode. For the Hall extension, we show how the full eigenmode spectrum relates to the analytic dispersion relation…
Hall magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) properties near a two-dimensional (2D) X-type magnetic neutral line in the steady state are considered via heuristic and rigorous developments. Upon considering the steady-state as the asymptotic limit of the corresponding \textit{time-dependent} problem and using a rigorous development, Hall effects are shown to be able to sustain the hyperbolicity of the magnetic field (and hence a more open X-point configuration) near the neutral line in the steady state. The heuristic development misses this subtle connection of the steady state with the corresponding \texti…
In this study, the dynamics of a dissipationless incompressible Hall magnetohydrodynamic (HMHD) medium are formulated as geodesics on a direct product of two volume-preserving diffeomorphism groups. Formulations are given for the geodesic and Jacobi equations based on a linear connection with physically desirable properties, which agrees with the Levi-Civita connection. Derivations of the explicit normal-mode expressions for the Riemannian metric, Levi-Civita connection, and related formulae and equations are also provided using the generalized Elsässer variables (GEVs). Examinations of the st…
The extended magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) system, including the Hall effect and the electron inertia effect, has a Hamiltonian structure embodied by a noncanonical Poisson algebra on an infinite-dimensional phase space. A nontrivial part of the formulation is the proof of Jacobi's identity for the Poisson bracket. We unearth a basic Lie algebra that generates the Poisson bracket. A class of similar Poisson algebra may be generated by the same Lie algebra, which encompasses the Hall MHD system and inertial MHD system.
A set of reduced Hall magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations are used to evaluate the stability of large aspect ratio current sheets to the formation of plasmoids (secondary islands). Reconnection is driven by resistivity in this analysis, which occurs at the resistive skin depth $d_η\equiv S_L^{-1/2} \sqrt{L v_A/γ}$, where $S_L$ is the Lundquist number, $L$ the length of the current sheet, $v_A$ the Alfvén speed, and $γ$ the growth rate. Modifications to a recent resistive MHD analysis [N.\ F.\ Loureiro, A.\ A.\ Schekochihin, and S.\ C. Cowley, Phys.\ Plasmas {\bf 14}, 100703 (2007)] arise when …
A recent paper by A.~Z.~Janda [J.~Math.~Phys.~{\bf 59}, 061509 (2018)] presented a partial solution of the equations of dissipationless Hall magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in terms of the Weierstrass elliptic function. Unfortunately, an error crept up in the analysis, where the kinetic and potential energies of the initial Hall MHD state were misidentified. The present comment presents the correct energy analysis and offers a complete solution of dissipationless Hall magnetohydrodynamics in terms of the Jacobi elliptic functions.
We present a new Hamiltonian formulation of barotropic Hall magnetohydrodynamics in two complementary approaches based on Dirac's constraint analysis. In one case the Hamiltonian is canonical involving physical variables only but the brackets are noncanonical, while in the other case the phase space is enlarged to retain the canonical structure of brackets.
We present two generalized hybrid kinetic-Hall magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) models describing the interaction of a two-fluid bulk plasma, which consists of thermal ions and electrons, with energetic, suprathermal ion populations described by Vlasov dynamics. The dynamics of the thermal components are governed by standard fluid equations in the Hall MHD limit with the electron momentum equation providing an Ohm's law with Hall and electron pressure terms involving a gyrotropic electron pressure tensor. The coupling of the bulk, low-energy plasma with the energetic particle dynamics is accomplishe…
The recent formulations of multi-region relaxed magnetohydrodynamics (MRxMHD) have generalized the famous Woltjer-Taylor states by incorporating a collection of "ideal barriers" that prevent global relaxation, and flow. In this paper, we generalize MRxMHD with flow to include Hall effects (MRxHMHD), and thereby obtain the partially relaxed counterparts of the famous double Beltrami states as a special subset. The physical and mathematical consequences arising from the introduction of the Hall term are also presented. We demonstrate that our results (in the ideal MHD limit) constitute an import…
Through the use of suitable variable transformations, the commonality of all extended magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) models is established. Remarkable correspondences between the Poisson brackets of inertialess Hall MHD and inertial MHD (which has electron inertia, but not the Hall drift) and extended MHD (which has both effects), are established. The helicities (two in all) for each of these models are obtained through these correspondences. The commonality of all the extended MHD models is traced to the existence of two Lie-dragged 2-forms, which are closely associated with the canonical momenta…
Various exact laws governing compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) and Hall-MHD (CHMHD) turbulence have been derived in recent years. Other than their fundamental theoretical interest, these laws are generally used to estimate the energy dissipation rate from spacecraft observations in order to address diverse problems related, e.g., to heating of the solar wind (SW) and magnetospheric plasmas. Here we use various $1024^3$ direct numerical simulation (DNS) data of free-decay isothermal CHMHD turbulence obtained with the GHOST code (Geophysical High-Order Suite for Turbulence) to analyze two o…
We derive the coarse-graining (CG) equations of incompressible Hall Magnetohydrodynamics (HMHD) turbulence to investigate the {\it local (in space)} energy cascade rate as a function of the filtering scale $\ell$. First, the CG equations are space averaged to obtain the analytical expression of the mean cascade rate. Its application to 3 dimensional (3D) simulations of (weakly compressible) HMHD shows a cascade rate consistent with the value of the mean dissipation rate in the simulations and with the classical estimates based on the "third-order" law. Furthermore, we developed an anisotropic …
Nonlinear and low-frequency solitary waves are investigated in the framework of the one-dimensional Hall-magnetohydrodynamic model with finite Larmor effects and a double adiabatic model for plasma pressures. The organization of these localized structures in terms of the propagation angle with respect to the ambient magnetic field $θ$ and the propagation velocity $C$ is discussed. There are three types of regions in the $θ-C$ plane that correspond to domains where either solitary waves cannot exist, are organized in branches, or have a continuous spectrum. A numerical method valid for the two …
We present a detailed study of intermittency in the velocity and magnetic field fluctuations of compressible Hall-magnetohydrodynamic turbulence with an external guide field. To solve the equations numerically, a reduced model valid when a strong guide field is present is used. Different values for the ion skin depth are considered in the simulations. The resulting data is analyzed computing field increments in several directions perpendicular to the guide field, and building structure functions and probability density functions. In the magnetohydrodynamic limit we recover the usual results wi…
We investigate the properties of plasma turbulence by means of two-dimensional Hall-magnetohydrodynamic (HMHD) and hybrid particle-in-cell (HPIC) numerical simulations. We find that HMHD simulations exhibit spectral properties that are in most cases in agreement with the results of the HPIC simulations and with solar wind observations. The energy spectra of magnetic fluctuations exhibit a double power-law with spectral index $-5/3$ at MHD scales and $-3$ at kinetic scales, while for velocity fluctuations the spectral index is $-3/2$ at MHD scales. The break between the MHD and the kinetic scal…
This study shows that a relativistic Hall effect significantly changes the properties of wave propagation by deriving a linear dispersion relation for relativistic Hall magnetohydrodynamics (HMHD). Whereas, in non- relativistic HMHD, the phase and group velocities of fast magnetosonic wave become anisotropic with an increasing Hall effect, the relativistic Hall effect brings upper bounds to the anisotropies. The Alfveén wave group velocity with strong Hall effect also becomes less anisotropic than non-relativistic case. Moreover, the group velocity surfaces of Alfvén and fast waves coalesce in…
We present estimates of the turbulent energy cascade rate, derived from a Hall-MHD third-order law. We compute the contribution from the Hall term and the MHD term to the energy flux. We use MMS data accumulated in the magnetosheath and the solar wind, and compare the results with previously established simulation results. We find that in observation, the MHD contribution is dominant at inertial scales, as in the simulations, but the Hall term becomes significant in observations at larger scales than in the simulations. Possible reasons are offered for this unanticipated result.
The dynamics of a dissipationless incompressible Hall magnetohydrodynamic (HMHD) medium is formulated using Lagrangian mechanics on a semidirect product of two volume preserving diffeomorphism groups. In the case of $\mathbb{T}^3$ or $E^3$, the generalized Elsasser variables introduced by Galtier (S. Galtier 2006 J. Plasma Phys. 72 721-769) yield remarkably simple expressions of basic formulas and equations such as the structure constants of Lie algebra, the equation of motion, and the conservation laws. Four constants of motion, where three of the four are independent, are naturally derived f…
We derive the exact law for three-dimensional (3D) homogeneous compressible isothermal Hall magnetohydrodynamics (CHMHD) turbulence, without the assumption of isotropy. The Hall current is shown to introduce new flux and sources terms that act at the small scales (comparable or smaller than the ion skin depth) to significantly impact the turbulence dynamics. The new law provides an accurate means to estimate for the first time the energy cascade rate over a broad range of scales covering the MHD inertial range and the sub-ion dispersive range in 3D numerical simulations and {\it in situ} space…
The first complete estimation of the compressible energy cascade rate $|\varepsilon_\text{C}|$ at magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) and sub-ion scales is obtained in the Earth's magnetosheath using Magnetospheric MultiScale (MMS) spacecraft data and an exact law derived recently for {\it compressible} Hall MHD turbulence. A multi-spacecraft technique is used to compute the velocity and magnetic gradients, and then all the correlation functions involved in the exact relation. It is shown that when the density fluctuations are relatively small, $|\varepsilon_\text{C}|$ identifies well with its incompres…
We present a numerical solver for plasma dynamics simulations in Hall magnetohydrodynamic (HMHD) approximation in one, two and three dimensions. We consider both isotropic and anisotropic thermal pressure cases, where a general gyrotropic approximation is used. Both explicit energy conservation equation and general polytropic state equations are considered. The numerical scheme incorporates second-order Runge-Kutta advancing in time and Kurganov-Tadmor scheme with van Leer flux limiter for the approximation of fluxes. A flux-interpolated constrained-transport approach is used to preserve solen…
Viscous phenomena are the hallmark of the hydrodynamic flow exhibited by Dirac fermions in clean graphene at high enough temperatures. We report a quantitative calculation of the electronic shear and Hall viscosities in graphene based on the kinetic theory combined with the renormalization group providing a unified description at arbitrary doping levels and non-quantizing magnetic fields. At charge neutrality, the Hall viscosity vanishes, while the field-dependent shear viscosity decays from its zero-field value saturating to a nonzero value in classically strong fields. Away from charge neutr…
Space and astrophysical plasmas are frequently found in the regime of differential rotation, where the presence of a magnetic field can result in the magnetorotational instability, directly responsible for important phenomena such as turbulent angular momentum transport in accretion disks. In the absence of an imposed magnetic field, a nonlinear dynamo is necessary for this transport mechanism to take place. In protoplanetary disks there are regions with high density and very low temperatures, which are two necessary conditions for the Hall effect to operate, affecting the development of the d…
A dynamical vectorial equation for homogeneous incompressible Hall-MHD turbulence together with the exact scaling law for third-order correlation tensors, analogous to that for the incompressible MHD, is rederived and applied to the results of two-dimensional hybrid simulations of plasma turbulence. At large (MHD) scales the simulations exhibits a clear inertial range where the MHD dynamic law is valid. In the sub-ion range the cascade continues via the Hall term but the dynamic law derived in the framework of incompressible Hall MHD equations is obtained only in a low plasma beta simulation. …
We derive two new forms of the Kármán-Howarth-Monin equation for decaying compressible Hall magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. We test them on results of a weakly-compressible, two-dimensional, moderate-Reynolds-number Hall MHD simulation and compare them with an isotropic spectral transfer (ST) equation. The KHM and ST equations are automatically satisfied during the whole simulation owing to the periodic boundary conditions and have complementary cumulative behavior. They are used here to analyze the onset of turbulence and its properties when it is fully developed. These approaches give …
There are several plasma models intermediate in complexity between ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) and two-fluid theory, with Hall and Extended MHD being two important examples. In this paper we investigate several aspects of these theories, with the ultimate goal of deriving the noncanonical Poisson brackets used in their Hamiltonian formulations. We present fully Lagrangian actions for each, as opposed to the fully Eulerian, or mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian, actions that have appeared previously. As an important step in this process we exhibit each theory's two advected fluxes (in analogy to id…
The role of a super-Alfvénic plasmoid instability in the onset of fast reconnection is studied by means of the largest Hall magnetohydrodynamics simulations to date, with system sizes up to $10^{4}$ ion skin depths ($d_{i}$). It is demonstrated that the plasmoid instability can facilitate the onset of rapid Hall reconnection, in a regime where the onset would otherwise be inaccessible because the Sweet-Parker width is significantly above $d_{i}$. However, the topology of Hall reconnection is not inevitably a single stable X-point. There exists an intermediate regime where the single X-point to…
It is well established that the magnetically structured solar atmosphere supports the propagation of MHD waves along various kind of jets including also the solar wind. It is well-known as well that under some conditions, namely high enough jet speeds, the propagating MHD modes can become unstable against to the most common Kelvin--Helmholtz instability (KHI). In this article, we explore how the propagation and instability characteristics of running along a slow solar wind MHD modes are affected when they are investigated in the framework of the ideal Hall-magnetohydrodynamics. Hall-MHD is app…
This study investigates the properties of waves in relativistic extended magnetohydrodynamics (RXMHD), which includes Hall and electron thermal inertia effects. We focus on the case when the electron temperature is ultrarelativistic, and thus, the electron thermal inertia becomes finite at near the proton inertial scale. We derive the linear dispersion relation of RXMHD and find that the Hall and electron thermal inertia effects couple with the displacement current, giving rise to three superluminous waves in addition to the slow, fast, and Alfvén waves. We also show that the phase- and group-…
We report a numerical investigation of three dimensional, incompressible, Hall magnetohydrodynamic turbulence with a relatively strong mean magnetic field. Using helicity decomposition and cross-bicoherence analysis, we observe that the resonant three--wave coupling is substantial among ion cyclotron and whistler waves. A detailed study of the degree of non-linearity of these two populations shows that the ion cyclotron component experiences a transition from weak to strong wave turbulence going from large to small scales, while the whistler fluctuations display a weak wave turbulence characte…
The three-dimensional (3D) Hall magnetohydrodynamics (HMHD) equations are often used to study turbulence in the solar wind. Some earlier studies have investigated the statistical properties of 3D HMHD turbulence by using simple shell models or pseudospectral direct numerical simulations (DNSs) of the 3D HMHD equations; these DNSs have been restricted to modest spatial resolutions and have covered a limited parameter range. To explore the dependence of 3D HMHD turbulence on the Reynolds number $Re$ and the ion-inertial scale $d_{i}$, we have carried out detailed pseudospectral DNSs of the 3D HM…
The present paper provides comprehensive description of various regimes involved in the two-fluid model of the resistive tearing instability. These include two novel regimes of this instability, which correspond to the long-wave modes that can develop in a highly-elongated current sheet. This issue is relevant to the study of fast magnetic reconnection and magnetic turbulence in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) objects with a large value of the Lundquist number.

We investigate a role of the Hall-effect in the current sheet evolution and onset of the secondary tearing (plasmoid) instability in the framework of the incompressible resistive Hall-magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). The model under consideration is a force-free modification of the Taylor's problem. Thus, the first part of the paper is devoted to a detailed analytical study of the Hall-MHD forced magnetic reconnection in a tearing stable force-free magnetic configuration. Then, in the second part, these results are used to investigate when and how the plasmoid instability can develop in the course …
A systematic study of energy conservation for extended magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models that include Hall terms and electron inertia is performed. It is observed that commonly used models do not conserve energy in the ideal limit, i.e., when viscosity and resistivity are neglected. In particular, a term in the momentum equation that is often neglected is seen to be needed for conservation of energy.
