Through the use of suitable variable transformations, the commonality of all extended magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) models is established. Remarkable correspondences between the Poisson brackets of inertialess Hall MHD and inertial MHD (which has electron inertia, but not the Hall drift) and extended MHD (which has both effects), are established. The helicities (two in all) for each of these models are obtained through these correspondences. The commonality of all the extended MHD models is traced to the existence of two Lie-dragged 2-forms, which are closely associated with the canonical momenta of the two underlying species. The Lie-dragging of these 2-forms by suitable velocities also leads to the correct equations of motion. The Hall MHD Poisson bracket is analyzed in detail, and the Jacobi identity is verified through a detailed proof and this proof ensures the Jacobi identity for the Poisson brackets of all the models.
The magnetic connection theorem of ideal Magnetohydrodynamics by Newcomb [Newcomb W.A., Ann. Phys., 3, 347 (1958)] and its covariant formulation are rederived and reinterpreted in terms of a "time resetting" projection that accounts for the loss of simultaneity in different reference frames between spatially separated events.
The concept of magnetic connections is extended to non-ideal relativistic magnetohydrodynamical plasmas. Adopting a general set of equations for relativistic magnetohydrodynamics including thermal-inertial, thermal electromotive, Hall and current-inertia effects, we derive a new covariant connection equation showing the existence of generalized magnetofluid connections that are preserved during the dissipationless plasma dynamics. These connections are intimately linked to a general antisymmetric tensor that unifies the electromagnetic and fluid fields, allowing the extension of the magnetic c…
The purpose of this paper is to show that, thanks to the restoration of the legitimate connection between the current density and the plasma flow velocity in Hall magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), Kelvin's Circulation Theorem becomes valid in Hall MHD. The ion-flow velocity in the usual circulation integral is now replaced by the canonical ion-flow velocity.
In this study, the dynamics of a dissipationless incompressible Hall magnetohydrodynamic (HMHD) medium are formulated as geodesics on a direct product of two volume-preserving diffeomorphism groups. Formulations are given for the geodesic and Jacobi equations based on a linear connection with physically desirable properties, which agrees with the Levi-Civita connection. Derivations of the explicit normal-mode expressions for the Riemannian metric, Levi-Civita connection, and related formulae and equations are also provided using the generalized Elsässer variables (GEVs). Examinations of the st…
The possibility that the type of discontinuous flow changes as the conditions gradually (continuously) change is investigated in connection with the problems arising when the results of numerical simulations of magnetic reconnection in plasma are interpreted. The conservation laws at a discontinuity surface in magnetohydrodynamics admit such transitions, but the socalled transition solutions for the boundary conditions that simultaneously satisfy two types of discontinuities should exist in this case. The specific form of such solutions has been found, and a generalized scheme of permitted tra…
Hall magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) properties near a two-dimensional (2D) X-type magnetic neutral line in the steady state are considered via heuristic and rigorous developments. Upon considering the steady-state as the asymptotic limit of the corresponding \textit{time-dependent} problem and using a rigorous development, Hall effects are shown to be able to sustain the hyperbolicity of the magnetic field (and hence a more open X-point configuration) near the neutral line in the steady state. The heuristic development misses this subtle connection of the steady state with the corresponding \texti…
Hamiltonian extended magnetohydrodynamics (XMHD) is restricted to respect helical symmetry by reducing the Poisson bracket for 3D dynamics to a helically symmetric one, as an extension of the previous study for translationally symmetric XMHD (D.A. Kaltsas et al, Phys. Plasmas 24, 092504 (2017)). Four families of Casimir invariants are obtained directly from the symmetric Poisson bracket and they are used to construct Energy-Casimir variational principles for deriving generalized XMHD equilibrium equations with arbitrary macroscopic flows. The system is then cast into the form of Grad-Shafranov…
In the single fluid, nonrelativistic, ideal-Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) plasma description magnetic field lines play a fundamental role by defining dynamically preserved "magnetic connections" between plasma elements. Here we show how the concept of magnetic connection needs to be generalized in the case of a relativistic MHD description where we require covariance under arbitrary Lorentz transformations. This is performed by defining 2-D {\it magnetic connection hypersurfaces} in the 4-D Minkowski space. This generalization accounts for the loss of simultaneity between spatially separated event…
This study shows that a relativistic Hall effect significantly changes the properties of wave propagation by deriving a linear dispersion relation for relativistic Hall magnetohydrodynamics (HMHD). Whereas, in non- relativistic HMHD, the phase and group velocities of fast magnetosonic wave become anisotropic with an increasing Hall effect, the relativistic Hall effect brings upper bounds to the anisotropies. The Alfveén wave group velocity with strong Hall effect also becomes less anisotropic than non-relativistic case. Moreover, the group velocity surfaces of Alfvén and fast waves coalesce in…
The nonlinear dynamics of a bundle of magnetic flux ropes driven by stationary fluid motions at their endpoints is studied, by performing numerical simulations of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations. The development of MHD turbulence is shown, where the system reaches a state that is characterized by the ratio between the Alfven time (the time for incompressible MHD waves to travel along the field lines) and the convective time scale of the driving motions. This ratio of time scales determines the energy spectra and the relaxation toward different regimes ranging from weak to strong turbul…
Variational principles for magnetohydrodynamics were introduced by previous authors both in Lagrangian and Eulerian form. In this paper we introduce simpler Eulerian variational principles from which all the relevant equations of barotropic magnetohydrodynamics can be derived. The variational principle is given in terms of six independent functions for non-stationary barotropic flows and three independent functions for stationary barotropic flows. This is less then the seven variables which appear in the standard equations of barotropic magnetohydrodynamics which are the magnetic field $\vec B…
A new formulation of time-dependent Relaxed Magnetohydrodynamics (RxMHD) is derived variationally from Hamilton's Action Principle using microscopic conservation of mass, and macroscopic conservation of total magnetic helicity, cross helicity and entropy, as the only constraints on variations of density, pressure, fluid velocity, and magnetic vector potential over a relaxation domain. A novel phase-space version of the MHD Lagrangian is derived, which gives Euler--Lagrange equations consistent with previous work on exact ideal and relaxed MHD equilibria with flow, but generalizes the relaxatio…
This text is intended as an introduction to magnetohydrodynamics in astrophysics, emphasizing a fast path to the elements essential for physical understanding. It assumes experience with concepts from fluid mechanics: the fluid equation of motion and the Lagrangian and Eulerian descriptions of fluid flow. In addition, the basics of vector calculus and elementary special relativity are needed. Not much knowledge of electromagnetic theory is required. In fact, since MHD is much closer in spirit to fluid mechanics than to electromagnetism, an important part of the learning curve is to overcome in…
We present a local approach to the study of scale-to-scale energy transfers in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. This approach is based on performing local averages of the physical fields, which amounts to filtering scales smaller than some parameter $\ell$. A key step in this work is the derivation of a local Kármán-Howarth-Monin relation which provides a local form of Politano and Pouquet's 4/3-law, without any assumption of homogeneity or isotropy. Our approach is exact, non-random, and we show its connection to the usual statistical results of turbulence. Its implementation on data obt…
The ideal magnetohydrodynamic theorem on the conservation of the magnetic connections between plasma elements is extended to non-ideal relativistic plasmas in curved spacetime. The existence of generalized magnetofluid connections that are preserved by the plasma dynamics is formalized by means of a covariant connection equation that includes different non-ideal effects. These generalized connections are constituted by 2-dimensional hypersurfaces, which are linked to an antisymmetric tensor field that unifies the electromagnetic and fluid fields. They can be interpreted in terms of generalized…
In this work two important models of treating collisional absorption in a laser driven plasma are compared, the dielectric and the ballistic model. We will see that there exists a remarkable connection between these basic approaches which could give a hint how to overcome the inherent limitations. The approximations made in the models are not identical and lead to different advantages and disadvantages. We notice that the dieletric model is able to handle screening in a selfconsistent manner, but is limited to first order in the electron-ion interaction. The ballistic model calculates the elec…
We unite the one-flow-dominated-state (OFDS) argument of \citet{MeyrandGaltierPRL12} with the one-chiral-sector-dominated-state (OCSCS) one \citep[][]{hydrochirality} to form a nonlinear extended-magnetohydrodynamics (XMHD) theory for the solar wind turbulence (SWT), \textbf{ranging from the MHD- to subproton-, and even to subelectron-scale regimes} \citep[modifying the theory of][]{AbdelhamidLingamMahajanAPJ16}. Degenerate chiral states in \citet{MiloshevichLingamMorrisonNJP17}'s XMHD absolute equilibria are exposed with helical representation, to offer the basis of replacing the linear wave …
The first estimation of the incompressible energy cascade rate at magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) scales is obtained in the plasma upstream of the Martian bow shock, using MAVEN observations and an exact relation derived for MHD turbulence. The energy cascade rate is computed for events with and without proton cyclotron wave (PCW) activity, for time intervals when MAVEN was in the solar wind with no magnetic connection to the bow shock. It is shown that the nonlinear cascade of energy at the MHD scales is slightly amplified when PCWs are present in the plasma. The analysis of the normalized cross he…
