Using the cut-and-paste procedure, we construct static and dynamic plane symmetric wormholes by surgically grafting together two spacetimes of plane symmetric vacuum solutions with a negative cosmological constant. These plane symmetric wormholes may be viewed as domain walls connecting different universes, having planar topology, and upon compactification of one or two coordinates, cylindrical topology or toroidal topology, respectively. A stability analysis is carried out for the dynamic case by taking into account specific equations of state, and a linearized stability analysis around static solutions is also explored. It is found that thin shell wormholes made of a dark energy fluid or of a cosmological constant fluid are stable, while thin shell wormholes made of phantom energy are unstable.
The generalized Darmois--Israel formalism for Einstein--Gauss--Bonnet theory is applied to construct thin-shell Lorentzian wormholes with spherical symmetry. We calculate the energy localized on the shell, and we find that for certain values of the parameters wormholes could be supported by matter not violating the energy conditions.
In this paper, we introduce higher dimensional thin-shell wormholes in pure Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The focus is on thin-shell wormholes constructed by $N\geq5$-dimensional spherically symmetric vacuum solutions. The results suggest that, under certain conditions, it is possible to have thin-shell wormholes that both satisfy the weak energy condition and be stable against radial perturbations.
We construct a rotating thin-shell wormhole using a Myers-Perry black hole in five dimensions, using the Darmois-Israel junction conditions. The stability of the wormhole is analyzed under perturbations. We find that exotic matter is required at the throat of the wormhole to keep it stable. Our analysis shows that stability of the rotating thin-shell wormhole is possible if suitable parameter values are chosen.
A general formalism for the dynamics of non rotating cylindrical thin-shell wormholes is developed. The time evolution of the throat is explicitly obtained for thin-shell wormholes whose metric has the form associated to local cosmic strings. It is found that the throat collapses to zero radius, remains static or expands forever, depending only on the sign of its initial velocity.
In this work we construct charged thin-shell Lorentzian wormholes in dilaton gravity. The exotic matter required for the construction is localized in the shell and the energy conditions are satisfied outside the shell. The total amount of exotic matter is calculated and its dependence with the parameters of the model is analysed.
In this work, we study the thin-shell wormholes in dRGT massive gravity. In order to joint two bulks of the spacetime geometry, we first derive junction conditions of the dRGT spacetime. This results the dynamics of the spherical thin-shell wormholes in the dRGT theory. We show that the massive graviton correction term of the dRGT theory in the Einstein equation is represented in terms of the effective anisotropic pressure fluid. However, if there is only this correction term, without invoking exotic fluids, we find that the thin-shell wormholes can not be stabilized. We then examine the stabi…
We build spherically symmetric wormholes within the DGP theory. We calculate the energy localized on the shell, and we find that for certain values of the parameters wormholes could be supported by matter not violating the energy conditions. We also show that it could exist solitonic shells charaterized by zero pressure and zero energy; thereafter we make some observations regarding their dynamic on the phase plane.
Considerable attention has been devoted to the wormhole physics in the past 30 years by exploring the possibilities of finding traversable wormholes without the need of exotic matter. In particular the thin-shell wormhole formalism has been widely investigated by exploiting the cut-and-paste technique to merge two space-time regions and, to research the stability of these wormholes developed by Visser. This method helps us to minimize the amount of the exotic matter. In this paper we construct a four dimensional, spherically symmetric, dyonic thin-shell wormhole with electric charge $Q$, magne…
We analytically explore the effect of falling matter on a spherically symmetric wormhole supported by a spherical shell composed of exotic matter located at its throat. The falling matter is assumed to be also a thin spherical shell concentric with the shell supporting the wormhole, and its self-gravity is completely taken into account. We treat these spherical thin shells by Israel's formalism of metric junction. When the falling spherical shell goes through the wormhole, it necessarily collides with the shell supporting the wormhole. To treat this collision, we assume the interaction between…
In this article we construct cylindrical thin-shell wormholes in the context of global cosmic strings. We study the stability of static configurations under perturbations preserving the symmetry and we find that the throat tends to collapse or expand, depending only on the direction of the velocity perturbation.
Recently, a class of spherically symmetric thin-shell wormholes in Brans-Dicke gravity have been introduced. Such wormholes can be supported by matter satisfying the weak energy condition (WEC). In this paper, we first obtain all the exact solutions satisfying the WEC. Then we show these solutions can be stable for certain parameters. A general requirement for stability is that $β^2>1$, which may imply that the speed of sound exceeds the speed of light.
A thin-shell wormhole is crafted by the cut-and-paste method of two Bardeen de-Sitter black holes using Darmois-Israel formalism. Energy conditions are considered for different values of magnetic charge while both mass and cosmological constant are fixed. The attractive and repulsive characteristics of the throat of the thin-shell wormhole are also examined through the radial acceleration. Dynamics and stability of the wormhole are studied around the static solutions of the linearized radial perturbations at the throat of the wormhole. The regions of stability are determined by checking out th…
We construct a model of a rotating wormhole made by cutting and pasting two Kerr spacetimes. As a result, we obtain a rotating thin-shell wormhole with exotic matter at the throat. Two candidates for the exotic matter are considered: (i) a perfect fluid; (ii) an anisotropic fluid. We show that a perfect fluid is unable to support a rotating thin-shall wormhole. On the contrary, the anisotropic fluid with the negative energy density can be a source for such a geometry.
Asymmetric thin-shell wormholes from two traversable Morris-Thorne wormhole spacetimes, with identical shape but different redshift functions, are constructed. Energy density of the thin-shell wormhole derives its power from a Morris-Thorne wormhole which is already exotic. By choice, the weak energy condition for the thin-shell wormhole is satisfied. A linear barotropic equation of state is assumed to hold after the radial perturbations. The fate of our thin-shell wormhole, after the perturbation, is striking: the asymmetric thin-shell wormhole is destined either to collapse to the original M…
Thin shell wormholes are constructed by joining two asymptotically flat spacetimes along their inner boundaries. The junction conditions imposed on the spacetimes specify the equation of state of the matter called thin shell distributed along the joined boundaries. Barcelo and Visser (2000) reported that spherically symmetric thin shell wormholes have their shells, namely the wormhole throats, on the photon spheres if the wormholes are $Z_2$-symmetric across the throats and the shells are of pure tension. In this paper, first, we consider general joined spacetimes (JSTs) and show that any $Z_2…
We construct the asymptotically flat charged thin-shell wormholes of Lovelock gravity in seven dimensions by cut-and-paste technique, and apply the generalized junction conditions in order to calculate the energy-momentum tensor of these wormholes on the shell. We find that for negative second order and positive third order Lovelock coefficients, there are thin-shell wormholes that respect the weak energy condition. In this case, the amount of normal matter decreases as the third order Lovelock coefficient increases. For positive second and third order Lovelock coefficients, the weak energy co…
We constructed thin-shell wormholes using the well-known "cut and paste" technique for static black holes sourced by an anisotropic fluid within the context of the Rastall gravity. Using the generalized Lanczos equations we explored the energy conditions at the wormhole's throat along with the traversability condition. We determined the stability regions when the wormhole configurations are surrounded by different bulk sources and obtained that the stability regions are considerably modified due to the non-trivial dependence of the Rastall parameter in the effective potential energy.
We investigate negative tension branes as stable thin shell wormholes in Reissner-Nordstrom-(anti) de Sitter spacetimes in $d$ dimensional Einstein gravity. Imposing Z2 symmetry, we construct and classify traversable static thin shell wormholes in spherical, planar (or cylindrical) and hyperbolic symmetries. In spherical geometry, we find the higher dimensional counterpart of Barcelo and Visser's wormholes, which are stable against spherically symmetric perturbations. We also find the classes of thin shell wormholes in planar and hyperbolic symmetries with a negative cosmological constant, whi…
We study five dimensional thin-shell wormholes in Einstein-Maxwell theory with a Gauss-Bonnet term. The linearized stability under radial perturbations and the amount of exotic matter are analyzed as a function of the parameters of the model. We find that the inclusion of the quadratic correction substantially widens the range of possible stable configurations, and besides it allows for a reduction of the exotic matter required to construct the wormholes.
We consider a static spherically symmetric thin shell wormhole collides with another thin shell consisting of ordinary matter. By employing the geometrical constraint, which leads to the conservation of energy and momentum, we show that the state after the collision can be solved from the initial data. In the low speed approximation, the solutions are rather simple. The shell may either bounce back or pass through the wormhole. In either case, the wormhole shrinks right after the collision. In the "bouncing" case, a surprising result is that the radial speeds before and after the collision sat…
It is proved that all thin-shell wormholes built from two identical regions of vacuum static, spherically symmetric space-times have a negative shell surface energy density in any scalar-tensor theory of gravity with a non-ghost massless scalar field and a non-ghost graviton.
Within 2+1-dimensional cosmological new massive gravity, we consider thin-shell and thin-shell wormhole construction. For this, we introduce first, the junction conditions apt for the fourth order terms in the action of the theory. Then, by employing some specific static solutions in new massive gravity, we study the characteristics of associated thin-shells and thin-shell wormholes. Our finding suggests that, firstly, there cannot exist any thin-shells regarding our chosen solutions of cosmological new massive gravity, and secondly, the constructed thin-shell wormhole does not need to be symm…
We provide a new type of thin-shell wormhole from the black holes with dilaton and monopole fields. The dilaton and monopole that built the black holes may supply fuel to construct the wormholes. Several characteristics of this thin-shell wormhole have been discussed. Finally, we discuss the stability of the thin-shell wormholes with a "phantom-like" equation of state for the exotic matter at the throat.
In this paper, we construct thin-shell wormholes from charged black string through cut and paste procedure and investigate its stability. We assume modified generalized Chaplygin gas as a dark energy fluid (exotic matter) present in the thin layer of matter-shell. The stability of these constructed thin-shell wormholes is investigated in the scenario of linear perturbations. We conclude that static stable as well as unstable configurations are possible for cylindrical thin-shell wormholes.
The thermodynamic stability of a thin-shell wormhole in a Schwarzschild bulk is considered. From the first law, entropy function is found which satisfies the local intrinsic stability conditions. Heat capacity emerges as a well-defined regular function justifying the stability of a Schwarzschild thin-shell wormhole. The scope of applications of the method is not limited by the Schwarzschild wormhole.
A thin-shell wormhole is theoretically constructible by surgically grafting together two Schwarzschild spacetimes using the so-called cut-and-paste technique. By describing such a wormhole as the limiting case of a spherical shell, it is shown that the structure must be unstable to linearized radial perturbations. Some earlier studies by the author et al. have shown, however, that under certain conditions, thin-shell wormholes can be stable.
The original formulation of the "Einstein-Rosen bridge" in the classic paper of Einstein and Rosen (1935) is historically the first example of a static spherically-symmetric wormhole solution. It is not equivalent to the concept of the dynamical and non-traversable Schwarzschild wormhole, also called "Einstein-Rosen bridge" in modern textbooks on general relativity. In previous papers of ours we have provided a mathematically correct treatment of the original "Einstein-Rosen bridge" as a traversable wormhole by showing that it requires the presence of a special kind of "exotic matter" located …
Using 'Cut and Paste' technique, we develop a thin shell wormhole in heterotic string theory. We determine the surface stresses, which are localized in the shell, by using Darmois-Israel formalism. The linearized stability of this thin wormhole is also analyzed.
We match an interior solution of a spherically symmetric traversable wormhole to a unique exterior vacuum solution, with a generic cosmological constant, at a junction interface, and the surface stresses on the thin shell are deduced. In the spirit of minimizing the usage of exotic matter we determine regions in which the weak and null energy conditions are satisfied on the junction surface. The characteristics and several physical properties of the surface stresses are explored, namely, regions where the sign of the tangential surface pressure is positive and negative (surface tension) are de…
A novel framework is presented that can be adapted to a wide class of generic spherically symmetric thin-shell wormholes. By using the Darmois--Israel formalism, we analyze the stability of arbitrary spherically symmetric thin-shell wormholes to linearized perturbations around static solutions. We demonstrate in full generality that the stability of the wormhole is equivalent to choosing suitable properties for the exotic material residing on the wormhole throat. As an application, we consider the thin-shell variant of the Ellis wormhole for the cases of a vanishing momentum flux and non-zero …
Mazharimousavi and Halilsoy [1] recently proposed wormhole solutions in $f(R)$-gravity that satisfy energy conditions but are unstable. We show here that stability could still be achieved for thin-shell wormholes obtained by gluing the wormholes in $f(R)$-gravity with the exterior Schwarzschild vacuum. Using the new geometrical constraints from thin-shell "mass" and from external "force" developed by Garcia, Lobo and Visser, we demarcate and analyze the stability regions.
By applying 'Darmois-Israel formalism', we establish a new class of thin shell wormhole in the context of global monopole resulting from the breaking of a global O(3) symmetry. Since global monopole is asymptotically conical (no longer asymptotically flat), we call it as conical thin shell wormhole. Different characteristics of this conical thin shell wormhole, namely, time evolution of the throat, stability, total amount of exotic matter have been discussed.
We consider the construction of generic spherically symmetric thin-shell traversable wormhole spacetimes in standard general relativity. By using the cut-and-paste procedure, we comprehensively analyze the stability of arbitrary spherically symmetric thin-shell wormholes to linearized spherically symmetric perturbations around static solutions. While a number of special cases have previously been dealt with in scattered parts of the literature, herein we take considerable effort to make the analysis as general and unified as practicable. We demonstrate in full generality that stability of the …
This paper discusses the theoretical construction of thin-shell wormholes from Kiselev black holes. We assume a barotropic equation of state for the exotic matter on the shell. While most of these wormholes are unstable to linearized radial perturbations, a limit argument is used to show that under certain conditions, stable solutions can be found.
We construct thin-shell electrically charged wormholes in d-dimensional general relativity with a cosmological constant. The wormholes constructed can have different throat geometries, namely, spherical, planar and hyperbolic. Unlike the spherical geometry, the planar and hyperbolic geometries allow for different topologies and in addition can be interpreted as higher-dimensional domain walls or branes connecting two universes. In the construction we use the cut-and-paste procedure by joining together two identical vacuum spacetime solutions. Properties such as the null energy condition and ge…
We reconsider the generalized flare-out conditions in static wormhole throats given by Hochberg and Visser. We show that due to the presence of matter sources on the throat, these conditions are not applicable to the thin-shell wormholes.
Abstract This short paper investigates the harmonic behavior of a general-relativistic thin-shell wormhole supported by a particular type of exotic fluid. The exotic fluid obeys a never-studied-before metric-dependent equation of state. This equation of state is tailored such that the wormhole's throat undergoes a harmonic-like behavior before damping to an equilibrium radius. Eventually, the mirror-symmetric Schwarzschild thin-shell wormhole is studied in this framework as an example.
The study of traversable wormholes is very hot topic for the past 30 years. One of the best possible way to make traversable wormhole is using the thin-shells to cut and paste two spacetime which has tunnel from one region of space-time to another, through which a traveler might freely pass in wormhole throat. These geometries need an exotic matter which involves a stress-energy tensor that violates the null energy condition. However, this method can be used to minimize the amount of the exotic matter. The goal of this thesis study is to study on thin-shell and thin-shell wormholes in general …
We construct a new type of thin-shell wormhole for non-asymptotically flat charged black holes in generalized dilaton-axion gravity inspired by low-energy string theory using cut-and-paste technique. We have shown that this thin shell wormhole is stable. The most striking feature of our model is that the total amount of exotic matter needed to support the wormhole can be reduced as desired with the suitable choice of the value of a parameter. Various other aspects of thin-shell wormhole are also analyzed.
Previous analysis about thin-shell wormholes associated to cosmic strings are extended. More evidence is found supporting the conjecture that, under reasonable assumptions about the equations of state of matter on the shell, the configurations are not stable under radial velocity perturbations.
Geodesic motion in traversable Schwarzschild and Kerr thin-shell wormholes constructed by the cut-and-paste method introduced by Visser (1989 Nucl. Phys. B 328 203; 1995 Wormholes: from Einstein to Hawking (Woodbury, MN: American Institute of Physics)) is studied. The orbits are calculated exactly in terms of elliptic functions and visualized with the help of embedding diagrams.
We investigate the thin-shell wormholes constrained by cosmological observations for the first time in the literature. Without loss of generality, we study the thin-shell wormholes in $ω$CDM model and analyze their stability under perturbations preserving the symmetry. Firstly, we constrain the $ω$CDM model using a combination of Union 2.1 SNe Ia data, the latest $H(z)$ data and CMB data. Secondly, we use the constrained dark energy equation of state (EoS) $ω$ which lies in $[-1.05,-0.89]$ to investigate thin-shell wormholes of various black hole spacetimes. We find that the stable Schwarzschi…
We show that the cold horizon of the extremal Reissner-Nordström can be considered as the throat of a thin-shell wormhole with zero total exotic matter and positive angular pressure. Such a wormhole is physical and stable against radial perturbations provided an appropriate perfect fluid exists at the throat.
The class of spherically-symmetric thin-shell wormholes provides a particularly elegant collection of exemplars for the study of traversable Lorentzian wormholes. In the present paper we consider linearized (spherically symmetric) perturbations around some assumed static solution of the Einstein field equations. This permits us to relate stability issues to the (linearized) equation of state of the exotic matter which is located at the wormhole throat.
It is shown in this paper that thin-shell wormholes, mathematically constructed by the standard cut-and-paste technique, can, under fairly general conditions, be compatible with quantum field theory.
In this paper, we construct an intra-galactic thin shell wormhole joining two copies of identical galactic space times described by the Mannheim-Kazanas de Sitter solution in conformal gravity and study its stability under spherical perturbations. We assume the thin shell material as a Chaplygin gas and discuss in detail the values of the relevant parameters under which the wormhole is stable. We study the stability following the method by Eiroa and we also qualitatively analyze the dynamics through the method of Weierstrass. We find that the wormhole is generally unstable but there is a small…
We consider a topologically nontrivial thin-shell wormhole with a throat in the form of a $T^2$ torus. It is shown that: (i)~such a wormhole is stable with respect to excitations of the throat; (ii)~not all energy conditions are violated for such wormholes; (iii)~if any of the energy conditions is violated, this violation occurs only partially in some region near the throat, and in other regions the violation is absent. Also, we discuss the differences between spherical $S^2$ wormholes and toroidal $T^2$ wormholes under investigation.
We revisit the stability analysis of cylindrical thin shell wormholes which have been studied in literature so far. Our approach is more systematic and in parallel to the method which is used in spherically symmetric thin shell wormholes. The stability condition is summarized as the positivity of the second derivative of an effective potential at the equilibrium radius, i.e. $V^{\prime \prime}\left(a_{0}\right) >0$. This may serve as the master equation in all stability problems for the cylindrical thin-shell wormholes.
In this paper, we apply the cut and paste procedure to charged black string for the construction of thin-shell wormhole. We consider the Darmois-Israel formalism to determine the surface stresses of the shell. We take Chaplygin gas to deal with the matter distribution on shell. The radial perturbation approach (preserving the symmetry) is used to investigate the stability of static solutions. We conclude that stable static solutions exist both for uncharged and charged black string thin-shell wormholes for particular values of the parameters.
Spherically symmetric thin-shell wormholes are constructed within the framework of Brans-Dicke gravity. It is shown that, for appropriate values of the Brans-Dicke constant, these wormholes can be supported by matter satisfying the energy conditions.
We construct a static axisymmetric wormhole from the gravitational field of two charged shells which are kept in equilibrium by their electromagnetic repulsion. For large separations the exterior tends to the Majumdar-Papapetrou spacetime of two charged particles. The interior of the wormhole is a Reissner-Nordström black hole matching to the two shells. The wormhole is traversable and connects to the same asymptotics without violation of energy conditions. However, every point in the Majumdar-Papapetrou region lies on a closed timelike curve.
In this paper we construct charged thin-shell wormholes in (2+1)-dimensions applying the cut-and -paste technique implemented by Visser, from a BTZ black hole which was discovered by Banados, Teitelboim and Zanelli, and the surface stress are determined using the Darmois-Israel formalism at the wormhole throat. We analyzed the stability of the shell considering phantom-energy or generalised Chaplygin gas equation of state for the exotic matter at the throat. We also discussed the linearized stability of charged thin-shell wormholes around the static solution.
In this article, the stability of a general class of spherically symmetric thin-shell wormholes is studied under perturbations preserving the symmetry. For this purpose, the equation of state at the throat is linearized around the static solutions. The formalism presented here is applied to dilaton wormholes and it is found that there is a smaller range of possible stable configurations for them than in the case of Reissner-Nordstrom wormholes with the same charge.
In this paper, the gravitational wave generation by a slowly rotating thin-shell wormhole is considered. Since the rotating thin-shell wormhole is assumed to be an axisymmetric rigid body, the rotation axis coincides with the largest principal axis which means there is no precession motion. However, if there is a perturbation in the angular velocity, the rotating wormhole can move with precession by perturbation which make arise the gravitational waves. We derive the gravitational wave spectrum, energy loss rate, and angular momentum loss rate.
In this paper, we construct thin-shell wormholes by applying the cut and paste procedure to a regular charged black hole in nonlinear electrodynamics field. We discuss different physical aspects of wormholes such as, the possible equation of state to matter shell, attractive or repulsive nature of wormhole and total amount of exotic matter required. The thin-shell equation of motion with and without cosmological constant is also investigated under linearized perturbation. Finally, we explore the stability regions interpreted by the parameter $β$ (speed of sound) and conclude that there are rea…
The linearized stability of charged thin shell wormholes under spherically symmetric perturbations is analized. It is shown that the presence of a large value of charge provides stabilization to the system, in the sense that the constrains onto the equation of state are less severe than for non-charged wormholes.
We prove the impossibility of cylindrical thin-shell wormholes supported by matter satisfying the energy conditions everywhere, under reasonable assumptions about the asymptotic behaviour of the - in general different - metrics at each side of the throat. In particular, we reproduce for singular sources previous results corresponding to flat and conical asymptotics, and extend them to a more general asymptotic behaviour. Besides, we establish necessary conditions for the possibility of non exotic cylindrical thin-shell wormholes.
The aim of this paper is to construct regular Hayward thin-shell wormholes and analyze their stability. We adopt Israel formalism to calculate surface stresses of the shell and check the null and weak energy conditions for the constructed wormholes. It is found that the stress-energy tensor components violate the null and weak energy conditions leading to the presence of exotic matter at the throat. We analyze the attractive and repulsive characteristics of wormholes corresponding to $a^r>0$ and $a^r<0$, respectively. We also explore stability conditions for the existence of traversable thin-s…
