A new realist interpretation of quantum mechanics is introduced. Quantum systems are shown to have two kinds of properties: the usual ones described by values of quantum observables, which are called extrinsic, and those that can be attributed to individual quantum systems without violating standard quantum mechanics, which are called intrinsic. The intrinsic properties are classified into structural and conditional. A systematic and self-consistent account is given. Much more statements become meaningful than any version of Copenhagen interpretation would allow. A new approach to classical properties, quantum cosmology and measurement problem is suggested. A quantum definition of classical states is proposed.
The concept of intrinsic and operational observables in quantum mechanics is introduced. In any realistic description of a quantum measurement that includes a macroscopic detecting device, it is possible to construct from the statistics of the recorded raw data a set of operational quantities that correspond to the intrinsic quantum mechanical observable.
In this paper, it is pointed out that the Berry's phase is a good index of degree of no-commutativity of the quantum statistical model. Intrinsic relations between the `complex structure' of the Hilbert space and Berry's phase is also discussed.
A direct classical analog of the quantum dynamics of intrinsic decoherence in Hamiltonian systems, characterized by the time dependence of the linear entropy of the reduced density operator, is introduced. The similarities and differences between the classical and quantum decoherence dynamics of an initial quantum state are exposed using both analytical and computational results. In particular, the classicality of early-time intrinsic decoherence dynamics is explored analytically using a second-order perturbative treatment, and an interesting connection between decoherence rates and the stabil…
The intrinsic unsharpness of a quantum observable is studied by introducing the notion of resolution width. This quantification of accuracy is shown to be closely connected with the possibility of making approximately repeatable measurements. As a case study, the intrinsic unsharpness and approximate repeatability of position and momentum measurements are examined in detail.
Quantum coherence is a key resource in quantum information processing scenarios, and quantifying coherence is an important task for both quantum foundation and quantum technology. However, until now, all most of coherence measures are basis-dependent that does not accord with physical reality, since the physical properties of the physical system should not be changed with the different choice of coordinate systems. Here, we propose an \textit{intrinsic basis-independent quantum coherence measure} which satisfies all conditions for quantifying coherence. This measurement not only reveals physic…
Faraday rotation is one way to realize quantum non-demolition measurement of electron spin in quantum dots. To describe Faraday rotation, semiclassical models are typically used, based on quantized electron spin states and classical electromagnetic fields. Such treatments neglect the entanglement between electronic and photonic degrees of freedom that produce intrinsic quantum noise, limiting the ultimate sensitivity of this technique. We present a fully quantum-mechanical description of Faraday rotation, and quantify this intrinsic noise. A method for measuring the purity of a given spin stat…
Quantum decoherence happens when the system interacts with the environment. Quantum correlation behaviours in the two-qubit spin squeezing model are studied under the influence of intrinsic decoherence. Quantitative results were determined, which depend on parameters of the physical system by checking different quantifiers of quantum correlation such as entanglement, local quantum uncertainty, trace distance discord and uncertainty-induced quantum nonlocality. We show that the entanglement suffers from intrinsic decoherence and exhibits sudden death, whereas the other measures are more robust …
Quantum measurements can produce randomness arising from the uncertainty principle. When measuring a state with von Neumann measurements, the intrinsic randomness can be quantified by the quantum coherence of the state on the measurement basis. Unlike projection measurements, there are additional and possibly hidden degrees of freedom in apparatus for generic measurements. We propose an adversary scenario for general measurements with arbitrary input states, based on which, we characterize the intrinsic randomness. Interestingly, we discover that under certain measurements, such as the symmetr…
The paper attempts to convince that the orthodox interpretation of quantum mechanics does not contradict philosophical realism by throwing light onto certain properties of quantum systems that seem to have escaped attention as yet. The exposition starts with the philosophical notions of realism. Then, the quantum mechanics as it is usually taught is demoted to a mere part of the theory called phenomenology of observations, and the common impression about its contradiction to realism is explained. The main idea of the paper, the physical notion of intrinsic properties, is introduced and many ex…
Based on the theory of quantum mechanics, intrinsic randomness in measurement distinguishes quantum effects from classical ones. From the perspective of states, this quantum feature can be summarized as coherence or superposition in a specific (classical) computational basis. Recently, by regarding coherence as a physical resource, Baumgratz et al.~present a comprehensive framework for coherence measures. Here, we propose a quantum coherence measure essentially using the intrinsic randomness of measurement. The proposed coherence measure provides an answer to the open question in completing th…
The peculiar uncertainty or randomness of quantum measurements stems from coherence, whose information-theoretic characterization is currently under investigation. Under the resource theory of coherence, it is interesting to investigate interpretations of coherence measures and the interplay with other quantum properties, such as quantum correlations and intrinsic randomness. Coherence can be viewed as the resource for the intrinsic randomness in the measurement outcomes of a state in the computational basis. We observed in our previous work that the coherence of formation, which measures the …
Recently, a basis-invariant measure of coherence known as the intrinsic degree of coherence has been established for classical and single-particle quantum states [JOSA B {\bf 36}, 2765 (2019)]. Using the same mathematical construction, in this article, we define the intrinsic degree of coherence of two-qubit states and demonstrate its usefulness in quantifying two-particle quantum correlations and entanglement. In this context, first of all, we show that the intrinsic degree of coherence of a two-qubit state puts an upper bound on the violations of Bell inequalities that can be achieved with t…
The extrinsic quantum mechanical arrow of time is understood to be a consequence of the interaction between quantum systems and their environment. A choice of boundary conditions for the Schrödinger equation results in a different time asymmetry intrinsic to quantum mechanical dynamics and independent of environmental interactions. Correct application of the intrinsically asymmetric dynamics, however, leads unavoidably to predictions of the experimental signatures of the extrinsic arrow of time. We are led to a new, model-independent mechanism for quantum decoherence. We need not invoke a mast…
We investigate nonclassical properties of the output of a Bose-Einstein condensate in Milburn's model of intrinsic decoherence. It is shown that the squeezing property of the atom laser is suppressed due to decoherence. Nevertheless, if some very special conditions were satisfied, the squeezing properties of atom laser could be robust against the decoherence.
We show that some classically chaotic quantum systems uncoupled from noisy environments may generate intrinsic decoherence with all its associated effects. In particular, we have observed time irreversibility and high sensitivity to small perturbations in the initial conditions in a quasiperiodic version of the kicked rotor. The existence of simple quantum systems with intrinsic decoherence clarifies the quantum--classical correspondence in chaotic systems.
Duan-Lukin-Cirac-Zoller (DLCZ) quantum repeater protocol, which was proposed to realize long distance quantum communication, requires usage of quantum memories. Atomic ensembles interacting with optical beams based on off-resonant Raman scattering serve as convenient on-demand quantum memories. Here, a complete free space, three-dimensional theory of the associated read and write process for this quantum memory is worked out with the aim of understanding intrinsic retrieval efficiency. We develop a formalism to calculate the transverse mode structure for the signal and the idler photons and us…
We introduce ways to measure information storage in quantum systems, using a recently introduced computation-theoretic model that accounts for measurement effects. The first, the quantum excess entropy, quantifies the shared information between a quantum process's past and its future. The second, the quantum transient information, determines the difficulty with which an observer comes to know the internal state of a quantum process through measurements. We contrast these with von Neumann entropy and quantum entropy rate and provide a closed-form expression for the latter for the class of deter…
The concept of intrinsic and operational observables in quantum mechanics is introduced. It is argued that, in any realistic description of a quantum measurement that includes a detecting device, it is possible to construct from the statistics of the recorded raw data a set of operational quantities that correspond to the intrinsic quantum mechanical observable. Using the concept of the propensity and the associated operational positive operator valued measure (POVM) a general description of the operational algebra of quantum mechanical observables is derived for a wide class of realistic dete…
Intrinsic quantum correlations of weak coherent states are observed between two parties through a novel detection scheme, which can be used as a supplement to the existence decoy-state BB84 and differential phase-shift quantum key distribution (DPS-QKD) protocols. In a proof-of-principle experiment, we generate bi-partite correlations of weak coherent states using weak local oscillator fields in two spatially separated balanced homodyne detections. We employ nonlinearity of post-measurement method to obtain the bi-partite correlations from two single-field interferences at individual homodyne …
We study the intrinsic decoherence of coupled harmonic oscillators. The Milburn master equation is solved exactly, and the dynamics of virtual ground state excitations are investigated. The interaction of quantum correlations and virtual excitation was then studied. The following is a summary of our major findings. (i) The damped oscillatory profile of all three quantities is the same. (ii) Ultra-strong coupling combined with huge anisotropy values results in the reemergence of entanglement and steering. (iii) To sustain entanglement and steering, virtual excitations are required. (iv) The qua…
It is shown that the existence of a time operator in the Liouville space representation of both classical and quantum evolution provides a mechanism for effective entropy change of physical states. In particular, an initially effectively pure state can evolve under the usual unitary evolution to an effectively mixed state.
Entanglement and coherence are two essential quantum resources for quantum information processing. A natural question arises of whether there are direct link between them. And by thinking about this question, we propose a new measure for quantum state that contains concurrence and is called intrinsic concurrence. Interestingly, we discover that the intrinsic concurrence is always complementary to coherence. Note that the intrinsic concurrence is related to the concurrence of a special pure state ensemble. In order to explain the trade-off relation more intuitively, we apply it in some composit…
The quantum Cramér-Rao bound is a cornerstone of modern quantum metrology, as it provides the ultimate precision in parameter estimation. In the multiparameter scenario, this bound becomes a matrix inequality, which can be cast to a scalar form with a properly chosen weight matrix. Multiparameter estimation thus elicits tradeoffs in the precision with which each parameter can be estimated. We show that, if the information is encoded in a unitary transformation, we can naturally choose the weight matrix as the metric tensor linked to the geometry of the underlying algebra $\mathfrak{su}(n)$, wi…
Quantum simulations of molecular systems on quantum computers often employ minimal basis sets of Gaussian orbitals. In comparison with more realistic basis sets, quantum simulations employing minimal basis sets require fewer qubits and quantum gates, but yield results of lower accuracy. A natural strategy to achieve more accurate results is to increase the basis set size, which in turn requires increasing the number of qubits and quantum gates. Here we explore the use of intrinsic atomic orbitals (IAOs) in quantum simulations of molecules, to improve the accuracy of energies and properties at …
We reveal that quadrature squeezing can result in significantly better quantum-estimation performance with quantum heterodyne detection (of H. P. Yuen and J. H. Shapiro) as compared to quantum homodyne detection for Gaussian states, which touches an important aspect in the foundational understanding of these two schemes. Taking single-mode Gaussian states as examples, we show analytically that the competition between the errors incurred during tomogram processing in homodyne detection and the Arthurs-Kelly uncertainties arising from simultaneous incompatible quadrature measurements in heterody…
Following the information-based approach to Dirac spinors under a constant magnetic field, the phase-space representation of symmetric and anti-symmetric localized Dirac cat states is obtained. The intrinsic entanglement profile implied by the Dirac Hamiltonian is then investigated so as to shed a light on quantum states as carriers of qubits correlated by phase-space variables. Corresponding to the superposition of Gaussian states, cat states exhibit non-trivial elementary information dynamics which include the interplay between intrinsic entanglement and quantum superposition as reported by …
It is found that Grover's quantum search algorithm is not robust against phase inversion and Hadmard transformation inaccuracies. Imperfect phase inversions and Hadmard-Walsh transformations in Grover's quantum search algorithm lead to reductions in the maximum probability of the marked state and affect the efficiency of the algorithm. even in the absence of decoherence. Given the degrees of inaccuracies, we find that to guarantee half rate of success, the size of the database should be in the order of $O({1 \over δ^2})$, where $δ$ is the uncertainty.

Quantum key distribution provides unconditional security for communication. Unfortunately, current experiment schemes are not suitable for long-distance fiber transmission because of instability or backscattering. We present a uni-directional intrinsic-stabilization scheme that is based on Michelson-Faraday interferometers, in which reflectors are replaced with 90 degree Faraday mirrors. With the scheme, key exchange from Beijing to Tianjin over 125 kilometers with an average error rate is below 6% has been achieved and its limited distance exceeds 150 kilometers. Experimental result shows the…
In this paper, we introduce intrinsic non-locality as a quantifier for Bell non-locality, and we prove that it satisfies certain desirable properties such as faithfulness, convexity, and monotonicity under local operations and shared randomness. We then prove that intrinsic non-locality is an upper bound on the secret-key-agreement capacity of any device-independent protocol conducted using a device characterized by a correlation $p$. We also prove that intrinsic steerability is an upper bound on the secret-key-agreement capacity of any semi-device-independent protocol conducted using a device…
The non-Markovian master equation for open quantum systems is obtained by generalization of the standard Zwanzig-Nakajima (ZN) projection technique. To this end, a coupled chain of equations for the reduced density matrices of the bath $\varrho_{B}(t)$ and of the system $\varrho_{S}(t)$ are written. Formal solution of the equation for $\varrho_{B}(t)$ in the 2-nd approximation in interaction yields a specific extra term, related to the intrinsic bath dynamics. This term is nonlinear in the reduced density matrix $\varrho_{S}(t)$, and vanishes in the Markovian limit. To verify the consistence a…
In previous implementations of adiabatic quantum algorithms using spin systems, the average Hamiltonian method with Trotter's formula was conventionally adopted to generate an effective instantaneous Hamiltonian that simulates an adiabatic passage. However, this approach had issues with the precision of the effective Hamiltonian and with the adiabaticity of the evolution. In order to address these, we here propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel scheme for adiabatic quantum computation by using the intrinsic Hamiltonian of a realistic spin system to represent the problem Hamiltonian whi…
Quantum resources play crucial roles for displaying superiority in many quantum communication and computation tasks. To reveal the intrinsic relations hidden in these quantum resources, many efforts have been made in recent years. In this work, we investigate the correlations of the tripartite W-type states based on bipartite quantum resources. The interrelations among the degree of coherence, concurrence, Bell nonlocality and purity are presented. Considering Bell nonlocal and Bell local (satisfied the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality) states for the two-qubit subsystems derived from the…
After centuries of research, how subjective experience relates to physical phenomena remains unclear. Recent strategies attempt to identify the physical correlates of experience. Less studied is how scientists eliminate the "spurious" aspects of their subjective experience to establish an "objective" science. Here we model scientists doing science. This entails a dynamics formally analogous to quantum dynamics. The analogue of Planck's constant is related to the process of observation. This reverse-engineering of science suggests that some "non-spurious" aspects of experience remain: embodimen…

We study the multi-exciton optical spectrum of vertically coupled GaN/AlN quantum dots with a realistic three-dimensional direct-diagonalization approach for the description of few-particle Coulomb-correlated states. We present a detailed analysis of the fundamental properties of few-particle/exciton interactions peculiar of nitride materials. The giant intrinsic electric fields and the high electron/hole effective masses give rise to different effects compared to GaAs-based quantum dots: intrinsic exciton-exciton coupling, non-molecular character of coupled dot exciton wavefunction, strong de…
We show that classical-quantum correspondence of center of mass motion in two coupled delta-kicked rotors can be obtained from intrinsic decoherence of the system itself which occurs due to the entanglement of the center of mass motion to the internal degree of freedom without coupling to external environment.

Recent experiments by Hayashi et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 226804 (2003)] demonstrate coherent oscillations of a charge quantum bit (qubit) in laterally defined quantum dots. We study the intrinsic electron-phonon decoherence and gate performance for the next step: a system of two coupled charge qubits. The effective decoherence model contains properties of local as well as collective decoherence. Decoherence channels can be classified by their multipole moments, which leads to different low-energy spectra. It is shown that due to the super-Ohmic spectrum, the gate quality is limited by the si…
We study the intrinsic, disorder-induced decoherence of an isolated quantum system under its own dynamics. Specifically, we investigate the characteristic time scale (i.e., the decoherence time) associated with an interacting many-body system losing the memory of its initial state. To characterize the erasure of the initial state memory, we define a time scale, the intrinsic decoherence time, by thresholding the gradual decay of the disorder-averaged return probability. We demonstrate the system-size independence of the intrinsic decoherence time in different models, and we study its dependenc…
The so-called eigenvalue-eigenstate link states that no property can be associated to a quantum system unless it is in an eigenstate of the corresponding operator. This precludes the assignation of properties to unmeasured quantum systems in general. This arbitrary limitation of Orthodox quantum mechanics generates many puzzling situations such as for example the impossibility to uniquely define a work distribution, an essential building block of quantum thermodynamics. Alternatively, Modal theories (e.g., Bohmian mechanics) provide an ontology that always allows to define intrinsic properties…
The wave function in quantum mechanics presents an interesting challenge to our understanding of the physical world. In this paper, I show that the wave function can be understood as four intrinsic relations on physical space. My account has three desirable features that the standard account lacks: (1) it does not refer to any abstract mathematical objects, (2) it is free from the usual arbitrary conventions, and (3) it explains why the wave function has its gauge degrees of freedom, something that are usually put into the theory by hand. Hence, this account has implications for debates in phi…
We investigate the meaning of gravity-induced decoherence in quantum theory, known as `intrinsic' or `fundamental' decoherence in the literature. We explore a range of issues relevant to this problem, including the meaning of modified uncertainty relations, the interpretations of the Planck scale, the distinction between quantum and stochastic fluctuations and the role of the time variable in quantum mechanics. We examine the specific physical assumptions that enter into different approaches to the subject. In particular, we critique two representative approaches that identify time fluctuation…
A simple model is considered to study the effects of finite size and internal structure in the tunneling of bound two-body systems through a potential barrier. It is demonstrated that these effects are able to increase the tunneling probability. Applications may include nuclear fusion, hydrogen atom and Cooper pair tunneling.
