Following the information-based approach to Dirac spinors under a constant magnetic field, the phase-space representation of symmetric and anti-symmetric localized Dirac cat states is obtained. The intrinsic entanglement profile implied by the Dirac Hamiltonian is then investigated so as to shed a light on quantum states as carriers of qubits correlated by phase-space variables. Corresponding to the superposition of Gaussian states, cat states exhibit non-trivial elementary information dynamics which include the interplay between intrinsic entanglement and quantum superposition as reported by the corresponding Dirac archetypes. Despite the involved time-evolution as non-stationary states, the Wigner function constrains the elementary information quantifiers according to a robust framework which can be consistently used for quantifying the time-dependent $SU(2) \otimes SU(2)$ (spin projection and intrinsic parity) correlation profile of phase-space localized Dirac spinor states. Our results show that the Dirac Wigner functions for cat states -- described in terms of generalized Laguerre polynomials -- exhibit an almost maximized timely persistent mutual information profile which is engendered by either classical- or quantum-like spin-parity correlations, depending on the magnetic field intensity.
In this paper, we introduce an extension of the Dirac equation, very similar to Dirac oscillator, that gives stationary localized wave packets as eigenstates of the equation. The extension to the Dirac equation is achieved through the replacement of the momentum operator by a PT-symmetric generalized momentum operator. In the 1D case, the solutions represent bound particles carrying spin having continuous energy spectrum, where the envelope parameter defines the width of the packet without affecting the dispersion relation of the original Dirac equation. In the 2D case, the solutions are local…
In this paper a bound localized Dirac particle is shown to exhibit a revival of the zitterbewegung (ZB) oscillation amplitude. These revivals go beyond the known quasiclassical regenerations in which the ZB oscillation amplitude is decreasing from period to period. This phenomenon is studied in a Dirac oscillator and it is shown that it is possible to set up wave packets in which there is a regeneration of the initial ZB amplitude.
All known solutions of the Dirac equation describing states of electrons endowed with angular momentum are very far from our notion of the electron as a spinning charged bullet because they are not localized in the direction of propagation. We present here analytic exact solutions, eigenstates of the total angular momentum component $M_z$, that come very close to this notion. These new solutions of the Dirac equation have also intricate topological properties similar to the hopfion solutions of the Maxwell equations.
Localized solutions of the Dirac equation for an electron moving in free space and electromagnetic field lattices with periodic dependence on space-time coordinates (electromagnetic space-time crystals) are treated using the expansions in basis wave functions. The techniques for calculating these functions with any prescribed accuracy are presented. It is shown that in the crystals created by two counterpropagating plane electromagnetic waves with the same or the opposite circular polarizations, the Dirac equation describing the basis functions reduces to matrix ordinary differential equations…
Any positive-energy state of a free Dirac particle that is initially highly-localized, evolves in time by spreading at speeds close to the speed of light. This general phenomenon is explained by the fact that the Dirac evolution can be approximated arbitrarily closely by a quantum random walk, where the roles of coin and walker systems are naturally attributed to the spin and position degrees of freedom of the particle. Initially entangled and spatially localized spin-position states evolve with asymptotic two-horned distributions of the position probability, familiar from earlier studies of q…
This work is devoted to incorporating into QFT the notion that particles and hence the particle states should be localizable in space. It focuses on the case of the Dirac field in 1+1 dimensional flat spacetime, generalizing a recently developed formalism for scalar fields. This is achieved exploiting again the non-uniqueness of quantization process. Instead of elementary excitations carrying definite amounts of energy and momentum, we construct the elementary excitations of the field localized (at some instant) in a definite region of space. This construction not only leads to a natural notio…
It is shown that the carrier of a bounded localized free Dirac wavefunction shrinks from infinity and subsequently expands to infinity again. The motion occurs isotropicly at the speed of light. In between there is the phase of rebound, which is limited in time and space in the order of the diameter of the carrier at its minimal extension. This motion proceeds anisotropicly and abruptly as for every direction in space there is a specific time, at which the change from shrinking to expanding happens instantaneously. Asymptotically, regarding the past and the future as well, the probability of p…
In this paper we study the nonlinear Dirac (NLD) equation on noncompact metric graphs with localized Kerr nonlinearities, in the case of Kirchhoff-type conditions at the vertices. Precisely, we discuss existence and multiplicity of the bound states (arising as critical points of the NLD action functional) and we prove that, in the $L^2$-subcritical case, they converge to the bound states of the NLS equation in the nonrelativistic limit.
We show that the Dirac quantum cellular automaton [Ann. Phys. 354 (2015) 244] shares many properties in common with the discrete-time quantum walk. These similarities can be exploited to study the automaton as a unitary process that takes place at regular time steps on a one-dimensional lattice, in the spirit of general quantum cellular automata. In this way, it becomes an alternative to the quantum walk, with a dispersion relation that can be controlled by a parameter, which plays a similar role to the coin angle in the quantum walk. The Dirac Hamiltonian is recovered under a suitable limit. …
The lifelong efforts of Paul A. M. Dirac were to construct localized quantum systems in the Lorentz covariant world. In 1927, he noted that the time-energy uncertainty should be included in the Lorentz-covariant picture. In 1945, he attempted to construct a representation of the Lorentz group using a normalizable Gaussian function localized both in the space and time variables. In 1949, he introduced his instant form to exclude time-like oscillations. He also introduced the light-cone coordinate system for Lorentz boosts. Also in 1949, he stated the Lie algebra of the inhomogeneous Lorentz gro…
We analyze gravitationally localized states of multiple fermions with high angular momenta, in the formalism introduced by Finster, Smoller, and Yau [Phys Rev. D 59, 104020 (1999)]. We show that the resulting soliton-like wave functions can be naturally interpreted in terms of a form of self-trapping, where the fermions become localized on shells the locations of which correspond to those of `bulges' in the optical geometry created by their own energy density.
We show that a relativistic version of Schrodinger cat states, here called Dirac cat states, can be built in relativistic Landau levels when an external magnetic field couples to a relativistic spin 1/2 charged particle. Under suitable initial conditions, the associated Dirac equation produces unitarily Dirac cat states involving the orbital quanta of the particle in a well defined mesoscopic regime. We demonstrate that the proposed Dirac cat states have a purely relativistic origin and cease to exist in the non-relativistic limit. In this manner, we expect to open relativistic quantum mechani…
We present a new quantum algebraic description of an electron localized in space-time. Positions in space and time, mass and Clifford generators are defined as quantum operators. Commutation relations and relativistic shifts under frame transformations are determined within a unique algebraic framework. Redshifts, i.e. shifts under transformations to uniformly accelerated frames, are evaluated and found to differ from the expressions of classical relativity.
