We study a spinless hardcore boson model on checkerboard lattices by Green function Monte Carlo method. At half filling, the ground state energy is obtained up to $28\times 28$ lattice and extrapolated to infinite size, the staggered pseudospin magnetization is found to vanish in the thermodynamic limit. Thus the $(π,π)$ charge order is absent in this system. Away from half filling, two defects induced by each hole (particle) may carry fractional charge ($\pm e/2$). For one hole case, we study how the defect-defect correlation changes with $t/J$, which is the ratio between the hopping integral and cyclic exchange, equals to $V/2t$ when $V\gg t$. Moreover, we argue that these fractional defects may propagate independently when the concentration of holes (or defects) is large enough.
We study the ground state properties of the geometrically frustrated Hubbard model on the anisotropic checkerboard lattice with nearest-neighbor hopping $t$ and next nearest-neighbor hopping $t'$. By using the path-integral renormalization group method, we study the phase diagram in the parameter space of the Hubbard interaction $U$ and the frustration-control parameter $t'/t$. Close examinations of the effective hopping, the double occupancy, the momentum distribution and the spin/charge correlation functions allow us to determine the phase diagram at zero temperature, where the plaquette-sin…
We obtain the complete phase diagram of the hardcore Bose-Hubbard model in the presence of a period-two superlattice in two and three dimensions. First we acquire the phase boundaries between the superfluid phase and the `trivial' insulating phases of the model (the completely-empty and completely-filled lattices) analytically. Next, the boundary between the superfluid phase and the half-filled Mott-insulating phase is obtained numerically, using the stochastic series expansion (SSE) algorithm followed by finite-size scaling. We also compare our numerical results against the predictions of sev…
We discuss the appearance of supersolid phases for interacting hardcore bosons on the square lattice when, in addition to the standard nearest neighbor hopping and repulsion, correlated or next-nearest neighbor hopping is present. Having in mind dimer-based quantum magnets in a field described by effective bosonic models of this kind, we put special emphasis on a comparison between the different cases of relative signs of the kinetic processes, which correspond to unfrustrated or frustrated magnetic models. In the unfrustrated case, we compare Quantum Monte Carlo simulations with a mean-field …
For a systematic study of charge degrees of freedom in lattices with geometric frustration, we consider spinless fermions on the checkerboard lattice with nearest-neighbor hopping $t$ and nearest-neighbor repulsion $V$ at quarter-filling. An effective Hamiltonian for the limit $|t|\ll V$ is given to lowest non-vanishing order by the ring exchange ($\sim t^{3}/V^{2}$). We show that the system can equivalently be described by hard-core bosons and map the model to a confining U(1) lattice gauge theory.
Employing numerical linked-cluster expansions (NLCEs) along with exact diagonalizations of finite clusters with periodic boundary condition, we study the energy, specific heat, entropy, and various susceptibilities of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the checkerboard lattice. NLCEs, combined with extrapolation techniques, allow us to access temperatures much lower than those accessible to exact diagonalization and other series expansions. We find that the high-temperature peak in specific heat decreases as the frustration increases, consistent with the large amount of unquenched entro…
We introduce a new numerical technique -- bosonic auxiliary-field Monte Carlo (bAFMC) -- which allows to calculate the thermal properties of large lattice-boson systems within a systematically improvable semiclassical approach, and which is virtually applicable to any bosonic model. Our method amounts to a decomposition of the lattice into clusters, and to an Ansatz for the density matrix of the system in the form of a cluster-separable state -- with non-entangled, yet classically correlated clusters. This approximation eliminates any sign problem, and can be systematically improved upon by us…
We study the low-energy properties of the geometrically frustrated Hubbard model on a three-dimensional pyrochlore lattice and a two-dimensional checkerboard lattice on the basis of the renormalization group method and mean field analysis. It is found that in the half-filling case, a (semi-)metal to insulator transition (MIT) occurs. Also, in the insulating phase, which has a spin gap, the spin rotational symmetry is not broken, while charge ordering exists. The results are applied to the description of the MIT observed in the pyrochlore system ${\rm Tl_2Ru_2O_7}$.
We study an orbital compass model on a checkerboard lattice where orbital degree of freedom is represented by the pseudo-spin operator. Competition arises from an Ising interaction for the $z$ component of pseudo-spins along the vertical/horizontal bonds and an Ising interaction for the $x$ component along diagonal bonds. Classical and quantum compass models are analyzed by utilizing several analytical methods and numerical simulations. At a fully frustrated point where the two Ising interactions compete with each other, a macroscopic number of orbital configurations are degenerate in a classi…
The highly frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet on Checkerboard and Pyrochlore lattices is subject to strong quantum fluctuations. This problem is amenable to the Contractor Renormalization (CORE) algorithm, which systematically computes the effective interactions in a basis of local cluster eigenstates. CORE was recently used to derive the Plaquette Boson-Fermion model for the square lattice Hubbard model (cond-mat/0108087). For the spin half Checkerboard and Pyrochlore cases, we find singlet ground states which break lattice symmetry, and a gap to spin one excitations. The low excitations a…
The ferromagnetism of the checkerboard lattice Hubbard model at quarter filling is one of the few exact ferromagnetic ground states known in the family of Hubbard models. When the nearest neighbor hopping, t1, is negligible compared with the second neighbor one, t2, the system reduces to a collection of Hubbard chains. We find that the 1D character is surprisingly robust as long as t1 < t2. This phenomenon of dimensional reduction due to the geometrical frustration leads to peculiar magnetic orders with 1D character for intermediate U and is responsible for odd-frequency superconducting states…
By using a state of art tensor network state method, we study the ground-state phase diagram of an extended Bose-Hubbard model on the square lattice with frustrated next-nearest neighboring tunneling. In the hardcore limit, tunneling frustration stabilizes a peculiar half supersolid (HSS) phase with one sublattice being superfluid and the other sublattice being Mott Insulator away from half filling. In the softcore case, the model shows very rich phase diagrams above half filling, including three different types of supersolid phases depending on the interaction parameters. The considered model…
Chiral magnetic phases with an unconventional topological twist in the magnetization are of huge interest due to their potential in spintronics applications. Here, we present a general method to induce such exotic magnetic phases using interfacial phase frustration within artificially grown superlattices. To demonstrate our method, we consider a multilayer with two different chiral magnetic phases as the competing orders at the top and bottom and show, using Monte Carlo calculations, that the interfacial phase frustration is realized at the central layer. In particular, we obtain three unconve…
Quantum Hall effects with multicomponent internal degrees of freedom facilitate the playground of novel emergent topological orders. Here, we explore the correlated topological phases of two-component hardcore bosons at a total filling factor $ν=2/5$ in both lattice Chern band models and Landau level continuum model under the interplay of intracomponent and intercomponent repulsions. We give the numerically theoretical demonstration of the emergence of two competing distinct fractional quantum Hall states: Halperin (441) fractional quantum Hall effect and Halperin (223) fractional quantum Hall…
We investigate a (semi-)metal to insulator transition (MIT) realized in geometrically frustrated electron systems on the basis of the Hubbard model on a three-dimensional pyrochlore lattice and a two-dimensional checkerboard lattice. Using the renormalization group method and mean field analysis, we show that in the half-filling case, MIT occurs as a result of the interplay between geometrical frustration and electron correlation. In the insulating phase, which has a spin gap, the spin rotational symmetry is not broken, while charge ordering exists. The charge ordered state is stabilized so as…
We study the zero-temperature ground-state (GS) properties of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ anisotropic planar pyrochlore, using the coupled cluster method (CCM) implemented to high orders of approximation. The system comprises a $J_{1}$--$J_{2}$ model on the checkerboard lattice, with isotropic Heisenberg interactions of strength $J_{1}$ between all nearest-neighbour pairs of spins on the square lattice, and of strength $J_{2}$ between half of the next-nearest-neighbour pairs (in the checkerboard pattern). We calculate results for the GS energy and average local GS on-site magnetization, using vario…
We report the results of our theoretical and numerical study on electronic and transport properties of fermion systems with charge frustration. We consider an extended Falicov-Kimball model in which itinerant spinless fermions interact repulsively by U with localized particles whose distribution satisfies a local constraint under geometrical frustration, the so-called ice rule. We numerically calculate the density of states, optical conductivity, and inverse participation ratio for the models on the pyrochlore, checkerboard, and kagome lattices, and discuss the nature of metal-insulator transi…
We study magnetic order in the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the checkerboard lattice, a two-dimensional version of the pyrochlore network with strong geometric frustration. By employing the semiclassical (1/S) expansion we find that quantum fluctuations of spins induce a long-range order that breaks the four-fold rotational symmetry of the lattice. The ordered phase is a valence-bond crystal. We discuss similarities and differences with the extreme quantum case S = 1/2 and find a useful phenomenology to describe the bond-ordered phases.
Motivated by the realization of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in non-cubic lattices, in this work we study the phases and collective excitation of bosons with nearest neighbor interaction in a triangular lattice at finite temperature, using mean field (MF) and cluster mean field (CMF) theory. We compute the finite temperature phase diagram both for hardcore and softcore bosons, as well analyze the effect of correlation arising due to lattice frustration and interaction systematically using CMF method. A semi-analytic estimate of the transition temperatures between different phases are derive…
We present a study of the effects of simultaneous charge- and spin-frustration on the two-dimensional strongly correlated quarter-filled band on an anisotropic triangular lattice. The broken-symmetry states that dominate in the weakly frustrated region near the rectangular lattice limit are the well known antiferromagnetic state with in-phase lattice dimerization along one direction, and the Wigner crystal state with the checkerboard charge order. For moderate to strong frustration, however, the dominant phase is a novel spin-singlet paired-electron crystal (PEC), consisting of pairs of charge…
Evidence for strong pairing at arbitrary small J/t is provided in a t-J model on the checkerboard lattice for the sign of hopping leading to frustration in hole motion. Destructive quantum interferences suppress Nagaoka ferromagnetism when J->0 and reduce drastically coherent hole motion in the fluctuating singlet background. It is shown that, by pairing in various orbital symmetry channels, holes can benefit from a large gain of kinetic energy.
We present design techniques of special optical lattices that allow quantum simulation of spin frustration in two-dimensional systems. By carefully overlaying optical lattices with different periods and orientations, we are able to adjust the ratio between the nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor interaction strengths in a square spin lattice and realize frustration effects. We show that only laser beams of a single frequency is required, and the parameter space reachable in our design is broad enough to study the important phases in the $J_1$-$J_2$ frustrated Heisenberg model and checke…
We use large scale quantum Monte-Carlo simulations to study an extended Hubbard model of hardcore bosons on the kagome lattice. In the limit of strong nearest-neighbor interactions at 1/3 filling, the interplay between frustration and quantum fluctuations leads to a valence bond solid ground state. The system undergoes a quantum phase transition to a superfluid phase as the interaction strength is decreased. It is still under debate whether the transition is weakly first order or represents an unconventional continuous phase transition. We present a theory in terms of an easy-plane NCCP$^1$ ga…
Usually complex charge ordering phenomena arise due to competing interactions. We have studied how such ordered patterns emerge from the frustration of a long-ranged interaction on a lattice. Using the lattice gas model on a square lattice with fixed particle density, we have identified several interesting phases; such as a generalization of Wigner crystals at low particle densities and stripe phases at densities in between rho = 1/3 and rho = 1/2. These stripes act as domain walls in the checkerboard phase present at half-filling. The phases are characterised at zero temperatures using numeri…
We study fermions and hardcore bosons with long range dipolar interactions at fractional fillings in a topological checkerboard lattice with short-range hoppings up to next-next-nearest neighbors \cite{Neupert2011}. We consider the case that the dipoles are aligned in the perpendicular direction by an external field without the complication of anisotropic interaction. Using exact diagonalization, we find clear signatures of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states at filling factors 1/3 and 1/5 for fermions (1/2 and 1/4 for bosons) in the lowest Chern band with a robust spectrum gap at moderate di…
Monte Carlo simulations are performed on the three-dimensional (3D) Ising model with the 2-1-4 layered perovskite structure as a minimal model for checkerboard charge ordering phenomena in layered perovskite oxides. Due to the interlayer frustration, only 2D long-range order emerges with a finite correlation length along the c axis. Critical exponents of the transition change continuously as a function of the interlayer coupling constant. The interlayer long-range Coulomb interaction decays exponentially and is negligible even between the second-neighbor layers. Instead, monoclinic distortion …
