The principle that unitarity must be preserved in all processes, no matter how exotic, has led to deep insights into boundary conditions in cosmology and black hole theory. In the case of black hole evaporation, Horowitz and Maldacena were led to propose that unitarity preservation can be understood in terms of a restriction imposed on the wave function at the singularity. Gottesman and Preskill showed that this natural idea only works if one postulates the presence of "conspiracies" between systems just inside the event horizon and states at much later times, near the singularity. We argue that some AdS black holes have unusual internal thermodynamics, and that this may permit the required "conspiracies" if real black holes are described by some kind of sum over all AdS black holes having the same entropy.
We extend Horowitz and Maldacena's proposal about black hole final state to Dirac fields and find that if annihilation of the infalling positrons and the collapsed electrons inside the horizon is considered, then the nonlinear evolution of collapsing quantum state will be avoided. We further propose that annihilation also plays the central role in the process of black hole information escaping in both Dirac and scalar fields. The computation speed of a black hole is also briefly discussed.
We investigate instability of 4-dimensional Reissner-Nordström-anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS$_4$) black holes with various topologies by charged scalar field perturbations. We numerically find that the RN-AdS$_4$ black holes become unstable against the linear perturbations below a critical temperature. It is analytically shown that charge extraction from the black holes occurs during the unstable evolution. To explore the end state of the instability, we perturbatively construct static black hole solutions with the scalar hair near the critical temperature. It is numerically found that the entropy of…
We study the collision of two highly boosted equal mass, nonrotating black holes with generic impact parameter. We find such systems to exhibit zoom-whirl behavior when fine tuning the impact parameter. Near the threshold of immediate merger the remnant black hole Kerr parameter can be near maximal (a/M about 0.95) and the radiated energy can be as large as 35% of the center-of-mass energy.
We study two types of linear instabilities in Einstein-Born-Infeld-scalar field theory and show that small Born-Infeld (BI) black holes suffer from superradiant instability within a particular range of frequencies; the larger the BI coupling parameter, the slower the growth rate of the instability. It is predicted that a small BI black hole decays into a small hairy black hole that has a charged scalar condensate floating near the horizon. We numerically show that there is a phase transition between hairy and BI black holes. The metric solution shows the existence of a hairy black hole for $T<…
Black strings, one class of higher dimensional analogues of black holes, were shown to be unstable to long wavelength perturbations by Gregory and Laflamme in 1992, via a linear analysis. We revisit the problem through numerical solution of the full equations of motion, and focus on trying to determine the end-state of a perturbed, unstable black string. Our preliminary results show that such a spacetime tends towards a solution resembling a sequence of spherical black holes connected by thin black strings, at least at intermediate times. However, our code fails then, primarily due to large gr…
The interior of the black hole can be described by anisotropic cosmology. By quantizing the metric function, we can obtain the Wheeler-DeWitt equation for inside the horizon. In order to interpret the wave function consistently, one needs to impose a boundary condition. In this paper, we introduce a prescription for the Euclidean analytic continuation inside the horizon and the corresponding wave function solution.
Mathematical connection between the quantum teleportation, the most unique feature of quantum information processing, and the black hole final state is studied taking into account the non trivial spacetime geometry. We use the twist operatation for the generalized entanglement measurement and the final state boundary conditions to obtain transfer theorems for the black hole evaporation. This would enable us to put together the universal quantum teleportation and the black hole evaporation in the unified mathematical footing. For a renormalized post selected final state of outgoing Hawking radi…
Horowitz and Maldacena have suggested that the unitarity of the black hole S-matrix can be reconciled with Hawking's semiclassical arguments if a final-state boundary condition is imposed at the spacelike singularity inside the black hole. We point out that, in this scenario, departures from unitarity can arise due to interactions between the collapsing body and the infalling Hawking radiation inside the event horizon. The amount of information lost when a black hole evaporates depends on the extent to which these interactions are entangling.
In this paper, we adopt the so-called Buonanno-Kidder-Lehner (BKL) recipe to estimate the final spin of a rotating binary black hole merger in STU supergravity. According to the BKL recipe, the final spin can be viewed as the sum of the individual spins plus the orbital angular momentum of the binary system which could be approximated as the angular momentum of a test particle orbiting at the innermost stable circular orbit around the final black hole. Unlike previous works, we consider the contribution of the orbital angular momentum of the binary system to the final spin by requiring the tes…
We propose that in quantum gravity one needs to impose a final state boundary condition at black hole singularities. This resolves the apparent contradiction between string theory and semiclassical arguments over whether black hole evaporation is unitary.
It is shown that the internal stationary state of the Schwarzschild black hole can be represented by a maximally entangled two-mode squeezed state of collapsing matter and infalling Hawking radiation. The final boundary condition at the singularity is then described by the random unitary transformation acting on the collapsing matter field. The outgoing Hawking radiation is obtained by the final state projection on the total wave function, which looks like a quantum teleportation process without the classical information transmitted. The black hole evaporation process as seen by the observer o…
We study the field of an electric point charge that is slowly lowered into an $n + 1$ dimensional Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black hole. We find that if $n > 3$, then countably infinite nonzero multipole moments manifest to observers outside the event horizon as the charge falls in. This suggests the final state of the black hole is not characterized by a Reissner-Nordström-Tangherlini geometry. Instead, for odd $n$, the final state either possesses a degenerate horizon, undergoes a discontinuous topological transformation during the infall of the charge, or both. For even $n$, the final state …
It is shown that the usual entropy argument for the Gregory-Laflamme (GL) instability for $some$ appropriate black strings and $p$-branes gives surprising agreement up to a few percent. This may provide a strong support to the GL's horizon fragmentation, which would produce the array of higher-dimensional Schwarzschild-type's black holes finally. On the other hand, another estimator for the size of the black hole end-state relative to the compact dimension indicates a second order (i.e., smooth) phase transition for some $other$ appropriate compactifications and total dimension of spacetime wh…
In an attempt to restore the unitarity of the evaporation process, Horowitz and Maldacena recently proposed a boundary-condition constraint for the final quantum state of an evaporating black hole at its singularity. Gottesman and Preskill have argued that the proposed constraint must lead to nonlinear evolution of the initial (collapsing) quantum state. Here we show that in fact this evolution allows signaling, making it detectable outside the event horizon with entangled-probe experiments of the kind we proposed recently. As a result the Horowitz-Maldacena proposal may be subject to terrestr…
We consider the quantum vacuum effects of the massless scalar fields that are non-minimally coupled to the background geometry of a collapsing homogeneous ball of dust. It is shown that for a definite range of coupling constants, there are repulsive quantum vacuum effects, capable of stopping the collapse process inside the black hole and precluding the formation of singularity. The final fate of the collapse will be a black hole with no singularity, inside which the matter stays balanced. The density of the final static matter will be close to the Planck density. We show that the largest poss…
We find a gravitational instanton that connects an initial state corresponding to a single-centered extremal Reissner-Nordstrom (ERN) black hole configuration, to a final state corresponding to a multi-centered configuration. This instanton is interpreted as describing quantum tunneling between the two different black hole solutions. We evaluate the Euclidean action for this instanton and find that the amplitude for the tunneling process is equal to half the difference in entropy between the initial and final configurations.
The black hole final state projection model, also known as the Horowitz-Maldacena model has garnished new interest due to the current debate over black hole firewalls. The nonlinear quantum mechanics of post-selection preserves information and avoids the AMPS argument by relaxing monogamy of entanglement. While these are promising features there are also potentially observable predictions to be made.
A Reissner-Nordström black hole (BH) is superradiantly unstable against spherical perturbations of a charged scalar field, enclosed in a cavity, with frequency lower than a critical value. We use numerical relativity techniques to follow the development of this unstable system -- dubbed a charged BH bomb -- into the non-linear regime, solving the full Einstein--Maxwell--Klein-Gordon equations, in spherical symmetry. We show that: $i)$ the process stops before all the charge is extracted from the BH; $ii)$ the system settles down into a hairy BH: a charged horizon in equilibrium with a scalar f…
We withdraw our paper for one doubt on one of equations .Due to this reason we will check again our calculation and replace the revised version of this paper.
It is now established that small Kerr-Anti-de Sitter (Kerr-AdS) black holes are unstable against scalar perturbations, via superradiant amplification mechanism. We show that small Kerr-AdS black holes are also unstable against gravitational perturbations and we compute the features of this instability. We also describe with great detail the evolution of this instability. In particular, we identify its endpoint state. It corresponds to a Kerr-AdS black hole whose boundary is an Einstein universe rotating with the light velocity. This black hole is expected to be slightly oblate and to co-exist …
We show that the internal stationary state of a black hole for massless Dirac fields can be represented by an entangled state of collapsing matter and infalling Hawking radiation. This implies that the Horowitz-Maldacena conjecture for the black hole final state originally proposed for the massless scalar fields is also applicable to fermionic fields as well. For an initially mixed state we find that the measure of mixedness is expected to decrease under evaporation.
We describe the full nonlinear development of the superradiant instability for a charged massless scalar field, coupled to general relativity and electromagnetism, in the vicinity of a Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black hole. The presence of the negative cosmological constant provides a natural context for considering perfectly reflecting boundary conditions and studying the dynamics as the scalar field interacts repeatedly with the black hole. At early times, small superradiant perturbations grow as expected from linearized studies. Backreaction then causes the black hole to lose charge and mass un…
The black hole area theorem implies that when two black holes merge, the area of the final black hole should be greater than the sum of the areas of the two original black holes. We examine how this prediction can be tested with gravitational-wave observations of binary black holes. By separately fitting the early inspiral and final ringdown stages, we calculate the posterior distributions for the masses and spins of the two initial and the final black holes. This yields posterior distributions for the change in the area and thus a statistical test of the validity of the area increase law. We …
The black hole information paradox is the result of contradiction between Hawking's semi-classical argument, which dictates that the quantum coherence should be lost during the black hole evaporation and the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics, the evolution of pure states to pure states. For over three decades, this contradiction has been one of the major obstacles to the ultimate unification of quantum mechanics and general relativity. Recently, a final-state boundary condition inside the black hole was proposed to resolve this contradiction for bosons. However, no such a remedy exis…
A new kind of duality has been proposed by Carr related to the quantum description of black holes, the so-called Compton/Schwarzschild duality \cite{Carr:2015nqa}. In this context, a new form for a Generalized Uncertainty Principle has arisen, which must bring us an interesting new route to a quantum description of spacetime. In the present paper, we shall investigate the consequences of the Compton/Schwarzschild duality to black hole entropy. The results found out reinforce an interesting perspective on the relationship between black holes and quantum information theory that has been recently…
Since black holes can be formed through widely varying processes, the horizon structure is highly complicated in the dynamical phase. Nonetheless, as numerical simulations show, the final state appears to be universal, well described by the Kerr geometry. How are all these large and widely varying deviations from the Kerr horizon washed out? To investigate this issue, we introduce a well-suited notion of horizon multipole moments and equations governing their dynamics, thereby providing a coordinate and slicing independent framework to investigate the approach to equilibrium. In particular, ou…
In this paper, we critically revisit the Horowitz-Maldacena proposal and its generalization by Lloyd. In the original proposal, as well as in Lloyd's generalization, Hawking radiation involves a pair of maximally entangled quantum states in which the ingoing partner state and the collapsed matter form either a maximally entangled pair or a Schmidt decomposed random state near the singularity. We point out that the unitary matrix introduced in Lloyd's fidelity calculation depends on initial matter states; hence, his result on the high average fidelity may not represent an almost unitary evoluti…
There are some examples in the literature, in which despite the fact that the underlying theory or model does not impose a lower bound on the size of black holes, the final temperature under Hawking evaporation is nevertheless finite and nonzero. We show that under some loose conditions, the black hole is necessarily an effective remnant, in the sense that its evaporation time is infinite. That is, the final state that there is nonzero finite temperature despite having no black hole remaining cannot be realized. We discuss the limitations, subtleties, and the implications of this result, which…
We propose a modified version of the Horowitz-Maldacena final-state boundary condition based upon a matter-radiation thermalization hypothesis on the Black Hole interior, which translates into a particular entangled state with thermal Schmidt coefficients. We investigate the consequences of this proposal for matter entering the horizon, as described by a Canonical density matrix characterized by the matter temperature $T$. The emitted radiation is explicitly calculated and is shown to follow a thermal spectrum with an effective temperature $T_{eff}$. We analyse the evaporation process in the q…
We reconstruct the complete fermionic orbit of the non-extremal BTZ black hole by acting with finite supersymmetry transformations. The solution satisfies the exact supergravity equations of motion to all orders in the fermonic expansion and the final result is given in terms of fermionic bilinears. By fluid/gravity correspondence, we derive linearized Navier-Stokes equations and a set of new differential equations from Rarita-Schwinger equation. We compute the boundary energy-momentum tensor and we interpret the result as a perfect fluid with a modified definition of fluid velocity. Finally, …
Almheiri et al. have emphasized that otherwise reasonable beliefs about black hole evaporation are incompatible with the monogamy of quantum entanglement, a general property of quantum mechanics. We investigate the final-state projection model of black hole evaporation proposed by Horowitz and Maldacena, pointing out that this model admits cloning of quantum states and polygamous entanglement, allowing unitarity of the evaporation process to be reconciled with smoothness of the black hole event horizon. Though the model seems to require carefully tuned dynamics to ensure exact unitarity of the…
We present the state of the art regarding the relation between the physics of Quantum Black Holes and Noncommutative Geometry. We start with a review of models proposed in the literature for describing deformations of General Relativity in the presence of noncommutativity, seen as an effective theory of Quantum Gravity. We study the resulting metrics, proposed to replace or at least to improve the conventional black hole solutions of Einstein's equation. In particular, we analyze noncommutative-inspired solutions obtained in terms of quasi-classical noncommutative coordinates: indeed because o…
Radiation of conserved charges carried by a black hole is a rare process, whose probability is suppressed by the change in the entropy between the initial and final states. This universal result provides insight into the black hole's internal structure and dynamics.
When a black hole evaporates, there arises a net energy flow from black hole into its outside environment (heat bath). The existence of energy flow means that the thermodynamic state of the whole system, which consists of the black hole and the heat bath, is in a nonequilibrium state. Therefore, in order to study the detail of evaporation process, the nonequilibrium effects of the energy flow should be taken into account. Using the nonequilibrium thermodynamics which has been formulated recently, this paper shows the following: (1) Time scale of black hole evaporation in a heat bath becomes sh…
In this letter, we consider dark matter annihilation in the gravitational field of noncommutative black holes. At final stage of evaporation, we hypothesize the existence of a thermal equilibrium state composed of a burning black hole relics fueled by dark matter accretion.
We study the dynamics of black holes in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories that exhibit spontaneous black hole scalarization using recently introduced methods for solving the full, non-perturbative equations of motion. For one sign of the coupling parameter, non-spinning vacuum black holes are unstable to developing scalar hair, while for the other, instability only sets in for black holes with sufficiently large spin. We study scalarization in both cases, demonstrating that there is a range of parameter space where the theory maintains hyperbolic evolution and for which the instability sat…
The final (close to the singularity) dynamical behavior of the metric inside black holes with massive charged scalar or vector hair is analyzed for general anisotropic and inhomogeneous initial conditions. These solutions are relevant to a holographic realization of superconductivity. It is shown that the dynamics falls within the scope of the "cosmological billiard" description and that in both cases, the corresponding hyperbolic billiard region has infinite volume so that the system ultimately settles down to a final Kasner regime. For massive vector hair, the conclusion holds because the lo…
Final state of a black hole is studied by taking into account a general unitary evolution of a black hole matter state. It is found that the mixedness decreases under general unitary transformation when the initial matter state was in mixed state and the mean fidelity at the evaporation is smaller than the fidelity of the quantum teleportation by the factor of inverse square of the number of states of a black hole. The change of entanglement Alice-Bob pair at evaporation is also studied by calculating the entanglement fidelity and eigenvalues of the partial transposed block density matrix. We …
We try to shed some light on the role of matter in the final stages of black hole evaporation from the fundamental frameworks of classicalization and the black-to-white hole bouncing scenario. Despite being based on very different grounds, these two approaches attempt at going beyond the background field method and treat black holes as fully quantum systems rather than considering quantum field theory on the corresponding classical manifolds. They also lead to the common prediction that the semiclassical description of black hole evaporation should break down and the system be disrupted by int…
The black hole information paradox is the incompatibility of quantum mechanics with the semi-classical picture of Hawking radiation. Hawking radiation appears thermal and eventually leads to the complete disappearance of a black hole. However, black holes could be formed from a pure quantum state. The transition from such an initial state to the final state of pure Hawking radiation cannot be described by unitary time evolution. In this paper, we present an analysis in quantum gravity that shows how boundary conditions in the future prevent a loss of quantum mechanical information from the spa…
We present some arguments in support of a {\it zero} entropy for {\it extremal} black holes. These rely on a combination of both quantum, thermodynamic, and statistical physics arguments. This result may shed some light on the nature of these extreme objects. In addition, we show that within a {\it quantum} framework the capture of a particle by an initially extremal black hole always results with a final nonextremal black hole.
We establish a connection between the ultra-Planckian scattering amplitudes in field and string theory and unitarization by black hole formation in these scattering processes. Using as a guideline an explicit microscopic theory in which the black hole represents a bound-state of many soft gravitons at the quantum critical point, we were able to identify and compute a set of perturbative amplitudes relevant for black hole formation. These are the tree-level N-graviton scattering S-matrix elements in a kinematical regime (called classicalization limit) where the two incoming ultra-Planckian grav…
We study the coalescence of non-spinning binary black holes from near the innermost stable circular orbit down to the final single rotating black hole. We use a technique that combines the full numerical approach to solve Einstein equations, applied in the truly non-linear regime, and linearized perturbation theory around the final distorted single black hole at later times. We compute the plunge waveforms which present a non negligible signal lasting for $t\sim 100M$ showing early non-linear ringing, and we obtain estimates for the total gravitational energy and angular momentum radiated.
Within the scenario of large extra dimensions, the Planck scale is lowered to values soon accessible. Among the predicted effects, the production of TeV mass black holes at the {\sc LHC} is one of the most exciting possibilities. Though the final phases of the black hole's evaporation are still unknown, the formation of a black hole remnant is a theoretically well motivated expectation. We analyze the observables emerging from a black hole evaporation with a remnant instead of a final decay. We show that the formation of a black hole remnant yields a signature which differs substantially from …
Recently LIGO and VIRGO collaborations reported about observation of gravitational-wave signal corresponding to the inspiral and merger of two black holes, resulting into formation of the final black hole. It was shown that the observations are consistent with the Einstein theory of gravity with high accuracy limited mainly by the statistical error. Angular momentum and mass of the final black hole were determined with rather large allowance of tens of percents. Here we shall show that this indeterminacy in the range of the black-hole parameters allows for some not negligible deformations of t…
The black hole information loss paradox has plagued physicists since Hawking's discovery that black holes evaporate thermally in contradiction to the unitarity expected by quantum mechanics. Here we show that one of the central presumptions of the debate is incorrect. Ensuring that information not escape during the semi-classical evaporation process does not require that all the information remain in the black hole until the final stages of evaporation. Using recent results in quantum information theory, we find that the amount of information that must remain in the black hole until the final …

We report a new black hole scalarization mechanism and disclose novel dynamical critical phenomena in the process of the nonlinear accretion of the scalar field into black holes. The accretion process can transform a seed black hole into a final scalarized or bald black hole, depending on the initial parameter of the scalar field $p$. There is a critical parameter $p_{\ast}$ and near it all intermediate solutions are attracted to a critical solution and stay there for a time scaling as $T\propto-γ\ln|p-p_{\ast}|$. At late times, the solutions evolve into scalarized black holes if $p>p_{\ast}$,…
We construct three models to describe the scenario where two eternal black holes are separated by a flat space, and can eventually be entangled by exchanging radiations. In the doubly holographic setup, we compute the entanglement entropy and the mutual information among the subsystems and obtain the dynamic phase structure of the entanglement. The formation of entanglement between the two black holes is delayed by the space where the radiations must travel through. Finally, if the two black holes exchange sufficient Hawking modes, the final state is characterized by a connected entanglement w…
In low-scale gravity scenarios, quantum black holes could be produced at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) provided the Planck scale is not higher than a few TeV. Based on fundamental principles and a few basic assumptions, we have constructed a model for quantum black hole production and decay in proton-proton collisions. By performing a detailed particle-level simulation at LHC energies, we have estimated cross sections and branching fractions for final-state particle topologies that would uniquely identify quantum black holes in LHC detectors. If the Planck scale is about a TeV, even with the…
We study interaction of rotating higher dimensional black holes with a brane in space-times with large extra dimensions. We demonstrate that in a general case a rotating black hole attached to a brane can loose bulk components of its angular momenta. A stationary black hole can have only those components of the angular momenta which are connected with Killing vectors generating transformations preserving a position of the brane. In a final stationary state the null Killing vector generating the black hole horizon is tangent to the brane. We discuss first the interaction of a cosmic string and …
The thermodynamics and weak cosmic censorship conjecture in Reissner-Nordstr$\ddot{o}$m anti-de Sitter black holes are investigated by the scattering of the scalar field. The first law of thermodynamics in the non-extremal Reissner-Nordstr$\ddot{o}$m anti-de Sitter black hole is recovered by the scattering. The increase of the horizon radius indicates that the singularity is not naked in this black hole. For the near-extremal and extremal black holes, the validity is tested by the minimum values of the function $f$ at their final states. It is found that both of the near-extremal and extremal …
We study the growth of fluctuations in collapsing cosmologies, extending old work of Lifshitz and Khalatnikov. As examples of systems where the fluctuations have a different composition than the background we study scalar fields with general improvement terms. Fluctuations always grow, and often dominate the homogeneous background. We argue that even for very dilute fluctuations, scattering processes inevitably lead to a dense gas of black holes. This leads us to hypothesize that the generic final state of a Big Crunch is described by a collapsing $p=ρ$ FRW cosmology. We conjecture that the bl…
