The properties of matrix valued polynomials generated by the scalar-type Rodrigues' formulas are analyzed. A general representation of these polynomials is found in terms of products of simple differential operators. The recurrence relations, leading coefficients, completeness are established, as well as, in the commutative case, the second order equations for which these polynomials are eigenfunctions and the corresponding eigenvalues, and ladder operators.
The conjecture of Duran and Grunbaum that if the weights are self-adjoint and positive semidefinite then they are necessarily of scalar type is proved for Q(x)=x and Q(x)=x^2-1 in dimension two, and for any dimension under genericity assumptions.
Commutative classes of quasi-orthogonal polynomials are found, which satisfy all the properties usually associated to orthogonal polynomials.
By building a second order adjoint difference equations on nonuniform lattices, the generalized Rodrigues type representation for the second kind solution of a second order difference equation of hypergeometric type on nonuniform lattices is given. The general solution of the equation in the form of a combination of a standard Rodrigues formula and a generalized Rodrigues formula is also established.
Classical orthogonal polynomials in one variable can be characterized as the only orthogonal polynomials satisfying a Rodrigues formula. In this paper, using the second kind Kronecker power of a matrix, a Rodrigues formula is introduced for classical orthogonal polynomials in two variables.
Starting from the Rodrigues representation of polynomial solutions of the general hypergeometric-type differential equation complementary polynomials are constructed using a natural method. Among the key results is a generating function in closed form leading to short and transparent derivations of recursion relations and an addition theorem. The complementary polynomials satisfy a hypergeometric-type differential equation themselves, have a three-term recursion among others and obey Rodrigues formulas. Applications to the classical polynomials are given.
A hierarchy of matrix-valued polynomials which generalize the Jacobi polynomials is found. Defined by a Rodrigues formula, they are also products of a sequence of differential operators. Each class of polynomials is complete, satisfies a two-step recurrence relation, integral inter-relations, and quasi-orthogonality relations.
In this article, a class of analytic functions is investigated and their some properties are established. Several recurrence relations and various classes of bilinear and bilateral generating functions for these analytic functions are also derived. Examples of some members belonging to this family of analytic functions are given and differential equations satisfied by these functions are also obtained.
We give some structural formulas for the family of matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials of size $2\times 2$ introduced by C. Calderón et al. in an earlier work, which are common eigenfunctions of a differential operator of hypergeometric type. Specifically, we give a Rodrigues formula that allows us to write this family of polynomials explicitly in terms of the classical Jacobi polynomials, and write, for the sequence of orthonormal polynomials, the three-term recurrence relation and the Christoffel-Darboux identity. We obtain a Pearson equation, which enables us to prove that the sequence of …
Matrix-valued analogues of the little q-Jacobi polynomials are introduced and studied. For the 2x2-matrix-valued little q-Jacobi polynomials explicit expressions for the orthogonality relations, Rodrigues formula, three-term recurrence relation and their relation to matrix-valued q-hypergeometric series and the scalar-valued little q-Jacobi polynomials are presented. The study is based on a matrix-valued q-difference operator, which is a q-analogue of Tirao's matrix-valued hypergeometric differential operator.
Matrix valued Laguerre polynomials are introduced via a matrix weight function involving several degrees of freedom using the matrix nature. Under suitable conditions on the parameters the matrix weight function satisfies matrix Pearson equations, which allow to introduce shift operators for these polynomials. The shift operators lead to explicit expressions for the structures of these matrix valued Laguerre polynomials, such as a Rodrigues formula, the coefficients in the three-term recurrence, differential operators, and expansion formulas.
We study two families of orthogonal polynomials with respect to the weight function $w(t)(t^2-\|x\|^2)^{μ-\frac12}$, $μ> -\frac 12$, on the cone $\{(x,t): \|x\| \le t, \, x \in \mathbb{R}^d, t >0\}$ in $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$. The first family consists of monomial polynomials $\mathsf{V}_{\mathbf{k},n}(x,t) = t^{n-|\mathbf{k}|} x^\mathbf{k} + \cdots$ for $\mathbf{k} \in \mathbb{N}_0^d$ with $|\mathbf{k}| \le n$, which has the least $L^2$ norm among all polynomials of the form $t^{n-|\mathbf{k}|} x^\mathbf{k} + \mathsf{P}$ with $°\mathsf{P} \le n-1$, and we will provide an explicit construction for …
We introduce a new family of special functions, namely $q$-Charlier multiple orthogonal polynomials. These polynomials are orthogonal with respect to $q$-analogues of Poisson distributions. We focus our attention on their structural properties. Raising and lowering operators as well as Rodrigues-type formulas are obtained. An explicit representation in terms of a $q$-analogue of the second of Appell's hypergeometric functions is given. A high-order linear $q$-difference equation with polynomial coefficients is deduced. Moreover, we show how to obtain the nearest neighbor recurrence relation fr…
Complementary polynomials of Legendre polynomials are briefly presented, as well as those for the confluent and hypergeometric functions, relativistic Hermite polynomials and corresponding new pre-Laguerre polynomials. The generating functions are all given in closed form and are much simpler than the standard ones. Some are simply polynomials in two variables. New recursions and addition formulas are derived.
We generalize classical Hobson's formula concerning partial derivatives of radial functions on a Euclidean space to a formula in the Dunkl analysis. As applications we give new simple proofs of known results involving Maxwell's representation of harmonic polynomials, Bochner-Hecke identity, Pizzetti formula for spherical mean, and Rodrigues formula for Hermite polynomials.
We introduce matrix-valued weight functions of arbitrary size, which are analogues of the weight function for the Gegenbauer or ultraspherical polynomials for the parameter $ν>0$. The LDU-decomposition of the weight is explicitly given in terms of Gegenbauer polynomials. We establish a matrix-valued Pearson equation for these matrix weights leading to explicit shift operators relating the weights for parameter $ν$ and $ν+1$. The matrix coefficients of the Pearson equation are obtained using a special matrix-valued differential operator in a commutative algebra of symmetric differential operato…
We can write the polynomial solution of the second order linear differential equation of hypergeometric-type $$ ϕ(x)y''+ψ(x)y'+λy=0, $$ where $ϕ$ and $ψ$ are polynomials, $°ϕ\le 2$, $°ψ=1$ and $λ$ is a constant, among others, by using the Rodrigues operator $R_k(ϕ,{\bf u})$ (see \cite{coma2}) where $\bf u$ is certain linear operator which satisfies the distributional equation \begin{equation} \label{1} \frac{d}{dx}[ϕ{\bf u}]=ψ{\bf u}, \end{equation} as $$ P_n(x)=B_n R_n(ϕ,{\bf u})[1], \qquad B_n\ne 0,\quad n=0, 1, 2, ... $$ Taking this into account we construct the complementary polynomials. A…
Necessary and sufficient conditions for the regularity of solutions of the functional equation appearing in the theory of classical orthogonal polynomials on lattices are stated. Moreover, the functional Rodrigues formula and a closed formula for the recurrence coefficients are presented.
A general family of matrix valued Hermite type orthogonal polynomials is introduced and studied in detail by deriving Pearson equations for the weight and matrix valued differential equations for these matrix polynomials. This is used to derive Rodrigues formulas, explicit formulas for the squared norm and to give an explicit expression of the matrix entries as well to derive a connection formula for the matrix polynomials of Hermite type. We derive matrix valued analogues of Burchnall formulas in operational form as well explicit expansions for the matrix valued Hermite type orthogonal polyno…
The matrix-valued spherical functions for the pair (K x K, K), K=SU(2), are studied. By restriction to the subgroup A the matrix-valued spherical functions are diagonal. For suitable set of representations we take these diagonals into a matrix-valued function, which are the full spherical functions. Their orthogonality is a consequence of the Schur orthogonality relations. From the full spherical functions we obtain matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials of arbitrary size, and they satisfy a three-term recurrence relation which follows by considering tensor product decompositions. An explicit ex…
We consider multiple orthogonal polynomials corresponding to two Macdonald functions (modified Bessel functions of the second kind), with emphasis on the polynomials on the diagonal of the Hermite-Padé table. We give some properties of these polynomials: differential properties, a Rodrigues type formula and explicit formulas for the third order linear recurrence relation.
In this chapter are given necessary and sufficient conditions for the regularity of solutions of the functional equation appearing in the theory of classical orthogonal polynomials. In addition, we also present the functional Rodrigues formula and a closed formula for the recurrence coefficients. We finally used these results to solve some interesting research problems concerning characterization theorems.
This paper studies a suitably normalized set of generalized Hermite polynomials and sets down a relevant Mehler formula, Rodrigues formula, and generalized translation operator. Weighted generalized Hermite polynomials are the eigenfunctions of a generalized Fourier transform which satisfies an F. and M. Riesz theorem on the absolute continuity of analytic measures. The Bose-like oscillator calculus, which generalizes the calculus associated with the quantum mechanical simple harmonic oscillator, is studied in terms of these polynomials.
New sequences of orthogonal polynomials with respect to the weight functions $e^{-x} ρ_ν(x),\ e^{- 1/x} x^{-1} ρ_ν (x), ρ_ν(x)= 2 x^{ν/2} K_ν(2\sqrt x),\ x >0, ν\in \mathbb{R}$, where $K_ν(z)$ is the modified Bessel function, are investigated. The recurrence relations, explicit representations, generating functions and Rodrigues-type formulae are obtained.
Orthogonal polynomial solutions of an admissible potentially self-adjoint linear second-order partial $q$-difference equation of the hypergeometric type in two variables on $q$-linear lattices are analyzed. A $q$-Pearson's system for the orthogonality weight function, as well as for the difference derivatives of the solutions are presented, giving rise to a solution of the $q$-difference equation under study in terms of a Rodrigues-type formula. The monic orthogonal polynomial solutions are treated in detail, giving explicit formulae for the matrices in the corresponding recurrence relations t…
Consider a root system of type $BC_1$ on the real line $\mathbb R$ with general positive multiplicities. The Cherednik-Opdam transform defines a unitary operator from an $L^2$-space on $\mathbb R$ to a $L^2$-space of $\mathbb C^2$-valued functions on $\mathbb R^+$ with the Harish-Chandra measure $|c(\lam)|^{-2}d\lam$. By introducing a weight function of the form $\cosh^{-\sig}(t)\tanh^{2k} t$ on $\mathbb R$ we find an orthogonal basis for the $L^2$-space on $\mathbb R$ consisting of even and odd functions expressed in terms of the Jacobi polynomials (for each fixed $\sig$ and $k$). We find a R…
We introduce two kinds of multiple little q-Jacobi polynomials by imposing orthogonality conditions with respect to r discrete little q-Jacobi measures on the exponential lattice q^k (k=0,1,2,3,...), where 0 < q < 1. We show that these multiple little q-Jacobi polynomials have useful q-difference properties, such as a Rodrigues formula (consisting of a product of r difference operators). Some properties of the zeros of these polynomials and some asymptotic properties will be given as well.
Employing the Lagrange inverting series, a solution of the transcendental equation $(x-a)(x-b)=le^{x}$, that can be considered a quadratic generalization of the equation defining Lambert $W$ function, has been found in terms of Bessel orthogonal polynomials. Once again a transcendental equation can be formally solved by means of classic orthogonal polynomials, suggesting a link between Rodrigues formulas and the terms of Lagrange series. A novel representation for Bessel polynomials has been found, by means of differential identity : $\left(x^{2}D\right)^{n}=x^{n+1}D^{n}x^{n-1}$
We study the generalized fractional linear problem $D^ν_{a+*} f(x) =A(x)f(x)+g(x)$, where $D^ν$ is an arbitrary mixture of Caputo derivatives of order at most one and $A(x)$ a family of operators in a Banach space generating strongly continuous semigroups. For time homogeneous case, when $A(x)$ does not depend on time $x$, the solution is expressed by the generalized operator-valued Mittag-Leffler function. For the more involved time-dependent case we use the method of non-commutative operator-valued Feynman-Kac formula in combination with the probabilistic interpretation of Caputo derivatives…
We introduce two q-analogues of the 2D-Hermite polynomials which are functions of two complex variables. We derive explicit formulas, orthogonality relations, raising and lowering operator relations, generating functions, and Rodrigues formulas for both families. We also introduce a q-2D analogue of the disk polynomials (Zernike polynomials) and derive similar formulas for them as well including evaluating certain connection coefficients. Some of the generating functions may be related to Rogers-Ramanujan type identities.
The wave functions of the Calogero-Sutherland model are known to be expressible in terms of Jack polynomials. A formula which allows to obtain the wave functions of the excited states by acting with a string of creation operators on the wave function of the ground state is presented and derived. The creation operators that enter in this formula of Rodrigues-type for the Jack polynomials involve Dunkl operators.
We prove that the operator norm of every Banach space valued Calderon-Zygmund operator T on the weighted Lebesgue-Bochner space depends linearly on the Muckenhoupt A_2 characteristic of the weight. In parallel with the proof of the real-valued case, the proof is based on pointwise dominating every Banach space valued Calderon-Zygmund operator by a series of positive dyadic shifts. In common with the real-valued case, the pointwise dyadic domination relies on Lerner's local oscillation decomposition formula, which we extend from real-valued functions to Banach space valued functions. The extens…
The classical orthogonal polynomials are usually defined by the Rodrigues' formula. This paper refers to a fractional extension of the classical Hermite, Laguerre, Jacobi, Charlier, Meixner, Krawtchouk and Hahn polynomials. By means of the Caputo operator of fractional calculus, C-Hermite, C-Laguerre, C-Legndre and the C-Jacobi functions are defined and their representation in terms of the hypergeometric functions are provided. Also, by means of the Gray and Zhang fractional difference oparator, fractional Charlier, Meixner, Krawtchouk and Hahn functions are defined and their representation in…
