It has been recently shown that quantum Boltzman equations may be relevant for leptogenesis. Quantum effects, which lead to a time-dependent CP asymmetry, have been shown to be particularly important for resonant leptogenesis when the asymmetry is generated by the decay of two nearly degenerate states. In this work we investigate the impact of the use of quantum Boltzman equations in the framework ``soft leptogenesis'' in which supersymmetry soft-breaking terms give a small mass splitting between the CP-even and CP-odd right-handed sneutrino states of a single generation and provide the CP-violating phase to generate the lepton asymmetry.
We study the impact of flavour in ``soft leptogenesis'' (leptogenesis induced by soft supersymmetry breaking terms). We address the question of how flavour effects can affect the region of parameters in which successful soft leptogenesis induced by CP violation in the right-handed sneutrino mixing is possible. We find that for decays which occur in the intermediate to strong washout regimes for all flavours, the produced total $B-L$ asymmetry can be up to a factor ${\cal O}(30)$ larger than the one predicted with flavour effects being neglected. This enhancement, permits slightly larger values…
Soft leptogenesis is a scenario in which the cosmic baryon asymmetry is produced from a lepton asymmetry generated in the decays of heavy sneutrinos (the partners of the singlet neutrinos of the seesaw) and where the relevant sources of CP violation are the complex phases of soft supersymmetry-breaking terms. We explain the motivations for soft leptogenesis, and review its basic ingredients: the different CP-violating contributions, the crucial role played by thermal corrections, and the enhancement of the efficiency from lepton flavour effects. We also discuss the high temperature regime $T >…
We study ``soft leptogenesis'', a new mechanism of leptogenesis which does not require flavour mixing among the right-handed neutrinos. Supersymmetry soft-breaking terms give a small mass splitting between the CP-even and CP-odd right-handed sneutrino states of a single generation and provide a CP-violating phase sufficient to generate a lepton asymmetry. The mechanism is successful if the lepton-violating soft bilinear coupling is unconventionally (but not unnaturally) small. The values of the right-handed neutrino masses predicted by soft leptogenesis can be low enough to evade the cosmologi…
We investigate the possibility of low-scale leptogenesis in the minimal supersymmetric standard model extended with right handed (s)neutrinos. We demonstrate that successful leptogenesis can be easily achieved at a scale as low as ~ TeV where lepton number and CP violation comes from soft supersymmetry breaking terms. The scenario is shown to be compatible with neutrino masses data.
Soft supersymmetry breaking terms involving heavy singlet sneutrinos can be the dominant source of leptogenesis. The relevant range of parameters is different from standard leptogenesis: a lighter Majorana mass, M < 10^9 GeV (allowing a solution of the gravitino problem), and smaller Yukawa couplings, Y_N < 10^{-4}. We investigate whether the various couplings of the singlet sneutrinos, which are constrained by the requirement of successful `soft leptogenesis', can have observable phenomenological consequences. Specifically, we calculate the contributions of the relevant soft supersymmetric br…
We discuss the effective theory appropriate for studying soft leptogenesis at temperatures T>10^7 GeV. In this regime, the main source of the B-L asymmetry is the CP asymmetry of a new anomalous R-charge that couple to generalized anomalous electroweak processes. Baryogenesis thus occurs mainly through R-genesis, and with an efficiency that can be up to two orders of magnitude larger than in usual estimates. Contrary to common belief, a sizeable baryon asymmetry is generated also when thermal corrections to the CP asymmetries in sneutrino decays are neglected which, in soft leptogenesis, imply…
We analyze the connection between electric dipole moment of the electron and the soft leptogenesis in supersymmetric $B-L$ extension of the standard model. In this model, the $B-L$ symmetry is radiatively broken at TeV scale. Therefore, it is a natural framework for low scale seesaw mechanism and also for implementing the soft leptogenesis. We show that the phases of trilinear soft SUSY breaking couplings $A$, which are relevant for the lepton asymmetry, are not constrained by the present experimental bounds on electric dipole moment. As in the MSSM extended with right-handed neutrinos, succes…
We point out that the so-called ``soft leptogenesis'' can occur at TeV scale if the $B$ term is generated through radiative corrections which involve two-loop diagrams with the gaugino exchange. This mechasnism requires the non-trivial CP phase, ${Im}(A m_{1/2}^*)\neq 0$, and can naturally explain the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe associated with the TeV scale seesaw mechanism. Such a low scale leptogenesis would be a promising option in view of the tight upper limit on the reheat temperature avoiding the gravitino problem in supergravity models.
Successful soft leptogenesis requires small B-terms for the right-handed sneutrinos and a large CP violating phase between the A- and B-terms. We show that this situation is realized naturally within the framework of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking. The A-term is dominated by contribution from gauge mediation, while supergravity effects are more important for the B-term. The different origins naturally explain simultaneously the smallness of the B-term and the large CP violating phase. The most stringent bounds on the model come from the cosmological gravitino problem. We find a viable p…
Soft supersymmetry breaking terms involving heavy singlet sneutrinos provide new sources of lepton number violation and of CP violation. In addition to the CP violation in mixing, investigated previously, we find that `soft leptogenesis' can be generated by CP violation in decay and in the interference of mixing and decay. These additional ways to leptogenesis can be significant for a singlet neutrino Majorana mass that is not much larger than the supersymmetry breaking scale, $M < 100 m_{SUSY}$. In contrast to CP violation in mixing, for some of these new contributions the sneutrino oscillati…
We study soft leptogenesis in gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking models with an enhanced A-term for the right-handed neutrino. We find that this scenario can explain the baryon asymmetry of the present universe, consistently with the gravitino dark matter for a wide range of gravitino mass m_{3/2}=O(MeV)-O(GeV). We also propose an explicit model which induces the necessary A-term for the right-handed neutrino.
By including all leading quantum-statistical effects at finite temperature, we show that no net asymmetry of leptons and sleptons is generated from soft leptogenesis, save the possible contribution from the resonant mixing of sneutrinos. This result contrasts with different conclusions appearing in the literature that are based on an incomplete inclusion of quantum statistics. We discuss vertex and wave-function diagrams as well as all different possible kinematic cuts that nominally lead to CP-violating asymmetries. The present example of soft leptogenesis may therefore serve as a paradigm in…
We revisit flavour effects in soft leptogenesis relaxing the assumption of universality for the soft supersymmetry breaking terms. We find that with respect to the case in which the heavy sneutrinos decay with equal rates and equal CP asymmetries for all lepton flavours, hierarchical flavour configurations can enhance the efficiency by more than two orders of magnitude. This translates in more than three order of magnitude with respect to the one-flavour approximation. We verify that lepton flavour equilibration effects related to off-diagonal soft slepton masses are ineffective for damping th…
We consider the minimal supersymmetric triplet seesaw model as the origin of neutrino masses and mixing as well as of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe, which is generated through soft leptogenesis employing a CP violating phase and a resonant behavior in the supersymmetry breaking sector. We calculate the full gauge--annihilation cross section for the Higgs triplets, including all relevant supersymmetric intermediate and final states, as well as coannihilations with the fermionic superpartners of the triplets. We find that these gauge annihilation processes strongly suppress the resulting …
Successful Soft Leptogenesis (SL) requires a relatively low mass scale for the SU(2) singlet neutrinos of $10^5-10^8$ GeV. However, conventional SL (unflavoured) requires an unnaturally small soft supersymmetry(SUSY)-breaking bilinear $B \ll \mathcal{O}({\rm TeV})$ coupling for successful leptogenesis. On the other hand, in this regime, the interactions mediated by $τ$, $μ$ (and even $e$) charged lepton Yukawa interactions are in equilibrium, making the lepton number asymmetries and the washouts flavour dependent. Hence, it is crucial to take into account the flavour effects. Considering a gen…
We explore how the initial conditions affect the final lepton asymmetry in Soft Leptogenesis. It has been usually assumed that the initial state is a statistical mixture of sterile sneutrinos and anti-sneutrinos with equal abundances. We calculate the lepton asymmetry due to the most general initial mixture. The usually assumed equal mixture produces a small, but sufficient, lepton asymmetry which is proportional to the ratio of the supersymmetry breaking scale over the Majorana scale. A more generic mixture, still with equal contents of sneutrinos and anti sneutrinos, yields an unsuppressed l…
In this work, we explore soft leptogenesis in the NMSSM framework extended by a right-handed neutrino superfield. We calculate the CP asymmetry, $\varepsilon$, and find it to be non-zero at tree-level without using thermal effects for the final state particles. This is in contrast to soft leptogenesis in the MSSM extended by a right-handed neutrino superfield where thermal effects are essential. The difference arises due to the presence of a 3-body decay of the sneutrino in the NMSSM that violates lepton number at tree-level. Apart from this, we also find that $\varepsilon\neq 0$ if the additi…
We consider leptogenesis induced by soft supersymmetry breaking terms ("soft leptogenesis"), in the context of the inverse seesaw mechanism. In this model there are lepton number (L) conserving and L-violating soft supersymmetry-breaking B-terms involving the singlet sneutrinos which, together with the -- generically small-- L-violating parameter responsible of the neutrino mass, give a small mass splitting between the four singlet sneutrino states of a single generation. In combination with the trilinear soft supersymmetry breaking terms they also provide new CP violating phases needed to gen…
In the no-scale supergravity with Type-I Seesaw model of Non-minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM), we have analysed inflation, reheating and leptogenesis. A no-scale supergravity realization of Starobinsky model of inflation in simple Wess-Zumino model have been shown earlier by Ellis et al. Here we show a no-scale supergravity realization of Starobinsky model of inflation in Type-I Seesaw framework of NMSSM. In this framework an appropriate choice of no-scale Kähler potential results in Starobinsky like plateau inflation along a Higgs-sneutrino $D$-flat direction consistent with the …
We study the contributions to CP violation in right-handed sneutrino decays induced by soft supersymmetry-breaking gaugino masses including flavour effects and paying special attention to the role of thermal corrections. Using a field-theoretical as well as a quantum mechanical approach we compute the CP asymmetries and we conclude that for all the soft-supersymmetry breaking sources of CP violation considered, an exact cancellation between the asymmetries produced in the fermionic and bosonic channels occurs at T=0 up to second order in soft supersymmetry-breaking parameters. Once thermal eff…
We investigate lepton flavor violating decays in a SUSY SO(10) model with symmetric textures recently constructed by us. Unlike the models with lop-sided textures which give rise to a large decay rate for mu -> e gamma, the decay rate we get is much suppressed and yet it is large enough to be accessible to the next generation of experiments. We have also investigated the possibility of baryogenesis resulting from soft leptogenesis. We find that with the soft SUSY masses assuming their natural values, B^\prime \equiv \sqrt{BM_{1}} ~ 1.4 TeV and Im(A) ~ 1 TeV, the observed baryon asymmetry in th…
We have shown that non-zero U_{e3} is generated in a see-saw type softly broken A_4 symmetric model through a single parameter perturbation in m_D in a single element. We have explored all possible 9 cases to study the neutrino mixing angles considering the best fitted values of Δm_{\odot}^2 and Δm_{atm}^2 with all parameters real. We have extended our analysis for the complex case and demonstrated large low energy CP violation (J_{CP}\simeq 10^{-2}) and m_{ee} in addition to mixing and mass pattern. We have also investigated leptogenesis and for a reasonable choice of model parameters compati…
We have constructed a SUSY SO(10) x SU(2)_F model in which a set of symmetric mass matrices with five texture zeros (having 11 parameters) leads to 22 measurable fermion masses, mixing angles and CP phases, all in agreement with available experimental data within one sigma. The LMA solution for solar neutrinos is obtained as well as neutrino mixing angles and absolute values of neutrino masses. We have investigated the possibility of baryogenesis resulting from soft leptogenesis. We find that, with soft SUSY masses assuming their natural values of the order of a TeV, the observed baryon asymme…
Affleck-Dine leptogenesis after thermal inflation along the $LH_u$ direction requires $m_L^2+m_{H_u}^2 < 0$ up to the AD scale ($|L|\simeq |H_u|\sim 10^9$ GeV). We renormalised this condition from the AD scale to the soft supersymmetry breaking scale by solving the renormalisation group equations perturbatively in the Yukawa couplings to obtain a semi-analytic constraint on the soft supersymmetry breaking parameters. We also used a fully numerical method to renormalise the baryogenesis condition and constrained the Minimal Supersymmetric Cosmological Model using the resulting baryogenesis cond…
Motivated by the fact that, in some realistic models combining SO(10) GUTs and flavour symmetries, it is not possible to achieve the required baryon asymmetry through the CP asymmetry generated in the decay of right-handed neutrinos, we take a fresh look on how deep this connection is in SO(10). The common characteristics of these models are that they use the see-saw with right-handed neutrinos, predict a normal hierarchy of masses for the neutrinos observed in oscillating experiments and in the basis where the right-handed Majorana mass is diagonal, the charged lepton mixings are tiny. In add…
We consider the full Boltzmann equations for standard and soft leptogenesis, instead of the usual integrated Boltzmann equations which assume kinetic equilibrium for all species. Decays and inverse decays may be inefficient for thermalising the heavy-(s)neutrino distribution function, leading to significant deviations from kinetic equilibrium. We analyse the impact of using the full kinetic equations in the case of a previously generated lepton asymmetry, and find that the washout of this initial asymmetry due to the interactions of the right-handed neutrino is larger than when calculated via …
The framework for soft leptogenesis minimally extended with a DM sector is studied. A heavy singlet neutrino superfield acts as the source for (s)lepton asymmetry and by coupling to the singlet DM superfield it produces a DM particle density through decays. The nature of DM generated is twofold depending on whether the Yukawa and DM couplings are either small or large. With sufficiently small Yukawa and DM couplings DM annihilations into MSSM particles are slow and as a consequence all DM particles form the DM component. The solutions to Boltzmann equations are given and the dependence between…
We implement soft leptogenesis in a warped five dimensional scenario with two branes on the orbifold boundaries coming from an S^{1}/Z_{2} symmetry, and supersymmetry broken on the IR brane. The SM hypermultiplet fields (fermions and Higgs) live in the UV brane and we allow the vector supermultiplets corresponding to the gauge bosons and a hypermultiplet corresponding to the right handed neutrino to live in the bulk. We assume that there are Majorana mass terms for the right handed neutrino superfield fixed on each brane and that there is a Yukawa term involving the right handed neutrino, the …
We consider a model of dynamical neutrino masses via the see-saw mechanism. Nambu-Goldstone bosons (majorons) arise associated with the formation of the heavy right-handed majorana masses. These bosons then acquire naturally soft masses (become pNGB's) at loop level via the Higgs-Yukawa mass terms. These models, like the original neutrino pNGB quintessence schemes of the 1980's that proceed through the Dirac masses, are natural, have cosmological implications through mass varying neutrinos, long range forces, and provide a soft potential for dark energy. We further argue that these models can …
We show that in supersymmetric models with gauged B-L symmetry, there is a new source for cosmological lepton asymmetry. The Higgs bosons responsible for B-L gauge symmetry breaking decay dominantly into right-handed sneutrinos \tilde{N} and \tilde{N}* producing an asymmetry in \tilde{N} over \tilde{N}*. This can be fully converted into ordinary lepton asymmetry in the decays of \tilde{N}. In simple models with gauged B-L symmetry we show that resonant/soft leptogenesis is naturally realized. Supersymmetry guarantees quasi-degenerate scalar states, while soft breaking of SUSY provides the need…
Soft leptogenesis is a mechanism which generates the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe via the out-of-equilibrium decays of heavy sneutrinos in which soft supersymmetry breaking terms play two important roles: they provide the required $CP$ violation and give rise to the mass splitting between otherwise degenerate sneutrino mass eigenstates within a single generation. This mechanism is interesting because it can be successful at the lower temperature regime $T \lesssim 10^9$ GeV in which the conflict with the overproduction of gravitinos can possibly be avoided. In earlier works, the…
In the supersymmetric triplet (type-II) seesaw model, in which a single SU(2)_L-triplet couples to leptons, the high-energy neutrino flavour structure can be directly determined from the low-energy neutrino data. We show that even with such a minimal triplet content, leptogenesis can be naturally accommodated thanks to the resonant interference between superpotential and soft supersymmetry breaking terms.
We study how leptogenesis can be implemented in a seesaw model with $S_4$ flavor symmetry, which leads to the neutrino tri-bimaximal mixing matrix and degenerate right-handed (RH) neutrino spectrum. Introducing a tiny soft $S_4$ symmetry breaking term in the RH neutrino mass matrix, we show that the flavored resonant leptogenesis can be successfully realized, which can lower the seesaw scale much so as to make it possible to probe in colliders. Even though such a tiny soft breaking term is essential for leptogenesis, it does not significantly affect the low energy observables. We also investig…
Continuous $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$ symmetry can generate quasi degenerate mass spectrum for both left handed light and right handed heavy Majorana neutrinos assuming that the symmetry preserving non zero parameters are nearly same. There is an accidental $μτ$ exchange symmetry in the light and heavy neutrino Majorana mass terms. This implies $θ_{13}=0$ and $θ_{23}=\fracπ{4}$. In addition it generates another zero mixing angle and one zero mass difference. We restrict ourselves to type-I See-Saw mechanism for generation of light neutrino mass. We have found that under $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$ symmetry cosmolo…
Several classes of neutrino mass models, which can naturally account for hierarchical masses and the bi-large pattern of neutrino mixing, are constructed from a bottom-up perspective based on the idea of decoupling of one right-chiral neutrino from the seesaw mechanism. The interplay between the predictions for the lepton-flavour violation in the MSSM with universal soft masses and for leptogenesis is studied. In particular, classes of neutrino mass models in which successful leptogenesis implies BR(mu->e gamma) potentially observable in upcoming experiments are identified.
We study the role played in leptogenesis by the equilibration of lepton flavors, as could be induced in supersymmetric models by off diagonal soft breaking masses for the scalar lepton doublets $\tilde m_{αβ}$, or more generically by new sources of lepton flavor violation. We show that if $\tilde m_{αβ}\gsim 1 $GeV and leptogenesis occurs below $\sim 100 $TeV, dynamical flavor effects are irrelevant and leptogenesis is correctly described by a one-flavor Boltzmann equation. We also discuss spectator effects in low scale leptogenesis by taking into account various chemical equilibrium condition…
We propose an alternative mechanism for leptogenesis at the electroweak scale, through the decays of a left-handed sneutrino. This scenario may be realized in supersymmetric models with non-zero Majorana masses for the neutrino superfield that lead to mixing and mass splitting between the left-handed sneutrino and the corresponding antisneutrino. Soft supersymmetry breaking provides new sources of CP violation in sneutrino-antisneutrino mixing that can generate a lepton asymmetry in decays of the left-handed sneutrino. We show how the three Sakharov conditions for generating the observed baryo…
The closed time-path formalism is a powerful Green's function formulation to describe non-equilibrium phenomena in field theory and it leads to a complete non-equilibrium quantum kinetic theory. We make use of this formalism to write down the set of quantum Boltzmann equations relevant for leptogenesis. They manifest memory effects and off-shell corrections. In particular, memory effects lead to a time-dependent CP asymmetry whose value at a given instant of time depends upon the previous history of the system. This result is particularly relevant when the asymmetry is generated by the decays …
We demonstrate a common origin for high-scale leptogenesis and three-loop neutrino mass generation. Specifically we extend the standard model by two real singlet scalars, two singly charged scalars carrying different lepton numbers and two or more singlet fermions with Majorana masses. Our model respects a softly broken lepton number and an exactly conserved $Z_2^{}$ discrete symmetry. Through the lepton-number-violating decays of the real scalars and then the lepton-number-conserving decays of the charged scalars, we can obtain a lepton asymmetry stored in the standard model leptons. This lep…
In supersymmetric models with lepton-number violation, hence also R-parity violation, it is easy to have realistic neutrino masses, but then leptogenesis becomes difficult to achieve. After explaining the general problems involved, we study the details of a model which escapes these constraints and generates a lepton asymmetry, which gets converted into the present observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe through the electroweak sphalerons. This model requires the presence of certain nonholomorphic R-parity violating terms. For completeness we also present the most general R-parity violating …
We suppose that the baryon asymmetry is produced by thermal leptogenesis (with flavour effects), at temperatures $\sim 10^{9} - 10^{10}$ GeV, in the supersymmetric seesaw with universal and real soft terms. The parameter space is restricted by assuming that $l_α\to l_βγ$ processes will be seen in upcoming experiments. We study the sensitivity of the baryon asymmetry to the phases of the lepton mixing matrix, and find that leptogenesis can work for any value of the phases. We also estimate the contribution to the electric dipole moment of the electron, arising from the seesaw, and find that it …
We emphasize that the vanishing of the CP asymmetry in leptogenesis, previously observed for models with tri-bimaximal mixing and family symmetry, may be traced to a property of the type I see-saw mechanism satisfied by such models known as Form Dominance, corresponding to the case of a diagonal Casas-Ibarra R-matrix. Form Dominance leads to vanishing flavour-dependent CP asymmetries irrespective of whether one has tri-bimaximal mixing or a family symmetry. Successful leptogenesis requires violation of Form Dominance, but not necessarily violation of tri bimaximal mixing. This may be achieved …
By extending the lepton sector of standard model to include one sterile neutrino and two sets of new Higgs doublets and right-handed neutrinos, denoted by $(η_1, N_1, N_3)$ and $(η_2, N_2, N_4)$, with two $Z_2$ symmetries, the puzzles of neutrino masses, matter-antimatter asymmetry and cosmic-ray excess observed by Fermi-LAT and PAMELA can be resolved simultaneously. The characters of the model are: (a) neutrino masses arise from type-I and radiative seesaw mechanisms; (b) leptogenesis leading to baryon asymmetry at the energy scale of $O(1- 10\rm TeV)$ could be realized through soft $Z_2$ sym…
The mass term for Majorana neutrinos explicitly violates lepton number. Several authors have used this fact to create a lepton asymmetry in the universe by considering CP violating effects in the one loop self-energy correction for the decaying heavy Majorana neutrino. We compare and comment on the different approaches used to calculate the lepton asymmetry including those using an effective Hamiltonian and resummed propagators. We also recalculate the asymmetry in the small mass difference limit.
We study the evolution of a cosmological baryon asymmetry in leptogenesis when the right-handed neutrinos are produced in inflaton decays. By performing a detailed numerical study over a broad range of inflaton-neutrino couplings we show that the resulting asymmetry can be larger by two orders of magnitude or more than in thermal leptogenesis, if the reheating temperature T_{RH} is of the same order as the right-handed neutrino mass M_1. Hence, the lower limit on the baryogenesis temperature obtained in thermal leptogenesis can be relaxed accordingly.
We discuss the effects of various processes that can be active during the leptogenesis era, and present the Boltzmann equations that take them into account appropriately. A non-vanishing Higgs number asymmetry is always present, enhancing the washout of the lepton asymmetry. This is the main new effect when leptogenesis takes place at $T>10^{12}$ GeV, reducing the final baryon asymmetry and tightening the leptogenesis bound on the neutrino masses. If leptogenesis occurs at lower temperatures, electroweak sphalerons partially transfer the lepton asymmetry to a baryonic one, while Yukawa interac…
Minimal models exist in which thermal, resonant leptogenesis occurs at the electroweak scale. The effects of individual lepton flavours play a crucial role and allow successful leptogenesis with large couplings between some of the charged leptons and the heavy Majorana neutrinos. This leads to potentially observable signals for low energy experiments (such as MEG, MECO and PRIME) and future linear colliders.
This thesis is devoted to some forefront issues in the field of leptogenesis. After reviewing the simplest picture where flavor effects are neglected and only the lightest right-handed neutrino contributes to the generation of asymmetry, we discuss in detail the importance of flavor effects, the possible relevance of quantum effects, as well as the role played by the heavier right-handed neutrinos.
This is a mini-review on the mechanism of leptogenesis, with a special emphasis on low-scale leptogenesis models which are testable in foreseeable laboratory experiments at Energy and Intensity frontiers. We also stress the importance of flavor effects in the calculation of the lepton asymmetry and the necessity of a flavor-covariant framework to consistently capture these effects.
With the consideration of a fast expanding Universe in effect due to an additional scalar field, we present a study of leptogenesis in non-standard cosmology. The Hubble expansion rate is modified by the new added scalar field $φ$, which can change the abundance of lepton asymmetry resulted by the leptogenesis mechanism. We report a significant deviation from the standard unflavored leptogenesis scenario can be achieved in presence of the scalar field $φ$ that dominates the energy budget of the early Universe. We present our results for leptogenesis from type-I seesaw with heavy right-handed M…
We review recent developments in leptogenesis on flavor effects. Their account discloses an important connection between the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe and CP violation at low energies. Besides, they modify the upper bound on the neutrino masses holding in the unflavored case. In this respect, it is important to identify the exact condition for flavor effects to be relevant and for the `fully flavored' Boltzmann equations to be valid.
If the baryon asymmetry of the Universe is produced by leptogenesis, CP violation is required in the lepton sector. In the seesaw extension of the Standard Model with three hierarchical right-handed neutrinos, we show that the baryon asymmetry is insensitive to the PMNS phases: thermal leptogenesis can work for any value of the observable phases. This result was well-known when there are no flavour effects in leptogenesis; we show that it remains true when flavour effects are included.
We show that when the relevant CP violating interactions in leptogenesis are fast, the different matter density asymmetries are determined at each instant by a balance condition between the amount of asymmetry being created and destroyed. This fact allows to understand in a simple way many features of leptogenesis in the strong washout regime. In particular, we find some non-trivial effects of flavour changing interactions that conserve lepton number, which are specially relevant in models for leptogenesis that rely heavily on flavour effects.
We present a flavour-covariant formalism for scalar triplet leptogenesis, which takes into account the effects of the different lepton flavours in a consistent way. Our main finding is that flavour effects can never be neglected in scalar triplet leptogenesis, even in the temperature regime where all charged lepton Yukawa interactions are out of equilibrium. This is at variance with the standard leptogenesis scenario with heavy Majorana neutrinos. In particular, the so-called single flavour approximation leads to predictions for the baryon asymmetry of the universe that can differ by a large a…
