We present fully ab-initio calculations of van der Waals coefficients for two different situations: i) the interaction between hydrogenated silicon clusters; and ii) the interactions between these nanostructures and a non metallic surface (a silicon or a silicon carbide surface). The methods used are very efficient, and allow the calculation of systems containing hundreds of atoms. The results obtained are further analyzed and understood with the help of simple models. These models can be of interest for molecular dynamics simulations of silicon nanostructures on surfaces, where they can give a very fast yet sufficiently accurate determination of the van der Waals interaction at large separations.
An advanced modeling approach is presented to shed light on the thermal transport properties of van der Waals materials (vdWMs) composed of single-layer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) stacked on top of each other with a total or partial overlap only in the middle region. It relies on the calculation of dynamical matrices from first-principle and on their usage in a phonon quantum transport simulator. We observe that vibrations are transferred microscopically from one layer to the other along the overlap region which acts as a filter selecting out the states that can pass through it. O…
We report ab initiocomputations with the Vienna ab Initio Simulation Package (VASP) aimed at elucidating the adsorption mechanism of graphene-like structures on (111) Pd, Pt, and Ni surfaces. To study the adsorption properties, we simulate an already-formed graphene layer. We present a comparative discussion of the graphene interactions with the three metals, focusing on the very particular adsorption of graphene over Pd.
In order to identify potential hydrogen storage materials, worldwide attention has been focused on hydrides with high gravimetric and volumetric capacity. Hydrogen is a unique element that possess positive, negative or neutral oxidation state in solids depending upon the chemical environment. If one can find hydrogen storage materials where hydrogen is present in both negative and positive oxidation state within the same structural framework then one can accommodate hydrogen with high volume density. So, it is fundamentally as well as technologically important to identify compounds in which hy…
We investigate the impact of mechanical strain, stacking order, and external electric fields on the magnetic interactions of a two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure in which a 2D ferromagnetic metallic Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ monolayer is deposited on germanene. Three distinct computational approaches based on \textit{ab initio} methods are used, and a careful comparison is given: (i) The Green's function method, (ii) the generalized Bloch theorem, and (iii) the supercell approach. First, the shell-resolved exchange constants are calculated for the three Fe atoms within the unit cell…
The recently discovered two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals magnet NiPS$_3$ provides a new route to examine many-body quasiparticles under 2D confinement. Excitons are of particular interest due to their strong coupling to the magnetic ground state in this material. Here, by using a first-principles based approach, we find bright excitons between 1.4 eV to 1.7 eV, similar to the sharp coherent and band edge excitons experimentally observed. Our analysis shows that each exciton in NiPS$_3$ is composed of a combination of $d$-$d$ and charge-transfer character, where the relative ratio of each pai…
We investigate the lattice and electronic structures of the bulk and surface of the prototypical layered topological insulators Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and Bi$_2$Te$_3$ using ab initio density functional methods, and systematically compare the results of different methods of including van der Waals (vdW) interactions. We show that the methods utilizing semi-empirical energy corrections yield accurate descriptions of these materials, with the most precise results obtained by properly accounting for the long-range tail of the vdW interactions. The bulk lattice constants, distances between quintuple layers …
In the last decade, several works have focused on exploring the material and electrical properties of $\text{GeTe/Sb}_{2}\text{Te}_{3}$ superlattices (SLs) in particular because of some first device implementations demonstrating interesting performances such as fast switching speed, low energy consumption, and non-volatility. However, the switching mechanism in such SL-based devices remains under debate. In this work, we investigate the prototype $\text{GeTe/Sb}_{2}\text{Te}_{3}$ SLs, to analyze fundamentally their electronic and thermal properties by ab initio methods. We find that the resist…
We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements of phonon spectra in the parent superconductor iron-tuned chalcogenide Fe$_{1+x}$Te, for two different x contents (x $\leq$ 0.11), using neutron time-of-flight technique. Thermal neutron spectroscopy allowed to collect the low-temperature Stokes spectra over an extended Q-range, at 2, 40 and 120K - hence covering both the magnetic monoclinic and the paramagnetic tetragonal phases. Whereas cold-neutrons allowed to measure high-resolution anti-Stokes spectra at 140, 220 and 300K, thus covering the tetragonal phase. Our results evidence a spin-p…
The electronic structure in unconventional superconductors holds a key to understand the momentum-dependent pairing interactions and the resulting superconducting gap function. In superconducting Fe-based chalcogenides, there have been controversial results regarding the importance of the $k_z$ dependence of the electronic dispersion, the gap structure and the pairing mechanisms of iron-based superconductivity. Here, we present a detailed investigation of the van der Waals interaction in FeSe and its interplay with magnetic disorder and real space structural properties. Using density functiona…
The dispersive interaction between nanotubes is investigated through ab initio theory calculations and in an analytical approximation. A van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 246401 (2004)] is used to determine and compare the binding of a pair of nanotubes as well as in a nanotube crystal. To analyze the interaction and determine the importance of morphology, we furthermore compare results of our ab initio calculations with a simple analytical result that we obtain for a pair of well-separated nanotubes. In contrast to traditional density functional theory calculatio…
The structure of liquid water at ambient conditions is studied in ab initio molecular dynamics simulations using van der Waals (vdW) density-functional theory, i.e. using the new exchange-correlation functionals optPBE-vdW and vdW-DF2. Inclusion of the more isotropic vdW interactions counteracts highly directional hydrogen-bonds, which are enhanced by standard functionals. This brings about a softening of the microscopic structure of water, as seen from the broadening of angular distribution functions and, in particular, from the much lower and broader first peak in the oxygen-oxygen pair-corr…
In 2012, Bjorkman et al. posed the question "Are we van der Waals ready?" [J. Phys.: Condens. Matter, 2012, 24, 424218] about the ability of ab initio modelling to reproduce van der Waals (vdW) dispersion forces in layered materials. The answer at that time was no, however. Here we report on a new generation of vdW dispersion models and show that one, fractionally-ionic atom (FIA) theory, offers close to quantitative predictions for layered structures. Furthermore, it does so from a qualitatively correct picture of dispersion forces. Other methods, such as D3 and optB88vdW also work well, albe…
The van der Waals dispersion coefficients of a set of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, ranging in size from the single-cycle benzene to circumovalene (C66H20), are calculated with a real-time propagation approach to time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). In the non-retarded regime, the Casimir-Polder integral is employed to obtain C6, once the dynamic polarizabilities have been computed at imaginary frequencies with TDDFT. On the other hand, the numerical coefficient that characterizes the fully retarded regime is obtained from the static polarizabilities. This ab initio strategy h…
Van der Waals (vdW) heterobilayers formed by two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) created a promising platform for various electronic and optical properties. ab initio band results indicate that the band offset of type-II band alignment in TMDCs vdW heterobilayer could be tuned by introducing Janus WSSe monolayer, instead of an external electric field. On the basis of symmetry analysis, the allowed interlayer hopping channels of TMDCs vdW heterobilayer were determined, and a four-level kp model was developed to obtain the interlayer hopping. Results indicate that the i…
We present a general picture of the exciton properties of layered materials in terms of the excitations of their single-layer building blocks. To this end, we derive a model excitonic hamiltonian by drawing an analogy with molecular crystals, which are other prototypical van der Waals materials. We employ this simplified model to analyse in detail the excitation spectrum of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) that we have obtained from the {\it ab initio} solution of the many-body Bethe-Salpeter equation as a function of momentum. In this way we identify the character of the lowest-energy excitons i…
Bi$_2$Te$_3$ is a material with high efficiency of thermoelectric energy conversion. Recently, it was also recognized as a topological insulator, and is often used as the basis for creation of other types of topological matter. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is widely considered as a simple method for growing of multicomponent films, but not as a tool for van der Waals epitaxy. We demonstrate here that the van der Waals epitaxy of Bi$_2$Te$_3$ is indeed impossible in vacuum PLD, but is possible in the presence of a background gas, which is confirmed by the results of scanning tunneling microsco…
Structural stability and vibrational properties of KN$_3$ have been studied under pressure using the first principles calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) as well as with semi empirical dispersion correction to the DFT to treat van der Waals interactions. The structural properties calculated through the dispersion correction are in good agreement with the experimental results when compared with the standard density functional theory. The lattice mode and the azide ion bending mode frequencies are found to be well reproduced by our calculations. As pressure increases, the E…
Achieving large-scale growth of two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic materials with high Curie temperature (TC) and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) is highly desirable for the development of ultra-compact magnetic sensors and magnetic memories. In this context, van der Waals (vdW) Cr2Te3 appears as a promising candidate. Bulk Cr2Te3 exhibits strong PMA and a TC of 180 K. Moreover, both PMA and TC might be adjusted in ultrathin films by engineering composition, strain, or applying an electric field. In this work, we demonstrate the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth of vdW heterostructur…
By investigating the optoelectronic properties of prototypical graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) heterostructures, we demonstrate how a nanostructured combination of these materials can lead to a dramatic enhancement of light-matter interaction and give rise to unique excitations. In the framework of ab initio many-body perturbation theory, we show that such heterostructures absorb light over a broad frequency range, from the near-infrared to the ultraviolet (UV), and that each spectral region is characterized by a specific type of excitations. Delocalized electron-hole pairs in graphene…
We examined the reliability of exchange-correlation functionals for molecular encapsulations combined by van der Waals forces, comparing their predictions with those of diffusion Monte Carlo method. We established that functionals with D3 dispersion force correction and including sufficient proportion of exact-exchange in long-ranged interaction can comparatively reliably estimate the binding strength. Our finding agrees with a previous ab initio study on argon dimer. However we found that even such functionals may not be able to distinguish the energy differences among different conformations…
A many-body expansion for mercury clusters of the form E = \sum_{i<j}Δε_{ij} + \sum_{i<j<k}Δε_{ijk} + ... \quad, does not converge smoothly with increasing cluster size towards the solid state. Even for smaller cluster sizes (up to n=6), where van der Waals forces still dominate, one observes bad convergence behaviour. For solid mercury the convergence of the many-body expansion can dramatically be improved by an incremental procedure within an embedded cluster approach. Here one adds the coupled cluster many-body electron correlation contributions of the embedded cluster to the bulk HF energy…
We use scanning tunneling microscopy to visualize and thermal desorption spectroscopy to quantitatively measure that the binding of naphthalene molecules to graphene (Gr), a case of pure van der Waals (vdW) interaction, strengthens with $n$- and weakens with $p$-doping of Gr. Density functional theory calculations that include the vdW interaction in a seamless, ab initio way accurately reproduce the observed trend in binding energies. Based on a model calculation, we propose that the vdW interaction is modified by changing the spatial extent of Gr's $π$ orbitals via doping.
Thermal equations of state (EoS) are essential in several scientific domains. However, experimental determination of EoS parameters may be limited at extreme conditions, therefore, {\it ab~initio} calculations have become an important method to obtain them. Density Functional Theory (DFT) and its extensions with various degrees of approximations for the exchange and correlation (XC) energy is the method of choice, but large errors in the EoS parameters are still common. The alkali halides have been problematic from the onset of this field and the quest for appropriate DFT functionals for such …
We propose a tubal van der Waals heterostructure by rolling up the graphene and MoS2 atomic layers into a tubal form. We illustrate that the interlayer space for the tubal van der Waals heterostructure can be varied in a specific range, which is determined by the competition between the interlayer van der Waals force and the mechanical properties of the atomic layers. The variability of the interlayer space can be utilized to efficiently tune mechanical properties of the tubal van der Waals heterostructure. More specifically, we demonstrate that the Poisson's ratio of the tubal van der Waals h…
The interaction of trimethyl methylcyclopentadienyl platinum (MeCpPtMe3) with a fully hydroxylated SiO2 surface has been explored by means of ab initio calculations. A large slab model cut out from the hydroxylated beta-cristobalite SiO2 (111) surface was chosen to simulate a silica surface. Density functional theory calculations were performed to evaluate the energies of MeCpPtMe3 adsorption to the SiO2 surface. Our results show that the physisorption of the molecule is dependent on both (i) the orientation of the adsorbate and (ii) the adsorption site on the substrate. The most stable config…
We derive the exchange-correlation potential corresponding to the nonlocal van der Waals density functional [M. Dion, H. Rydberg, E. Schroder, D. C. Langreth, and B. I. Lundqvist, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 246401 (2004)]. We use this potential for a self-consistent calculation of the ground state properties of a number of van der Waals complexes as well as crystalline silicon. For the latter, where little or no van der Waals interaction is expected, we find that the results are mostly determined by semilocal exchange and correlation as in standard generalized gradient approximations (GGA), with the…
A literature survey of experimentally measured mobility values for the two-dimensional materials MoS2, MoSe2, MoTe2, WS2, WSe2, and black phosphorous carried out during 2015.
The application of new materials in nanotechnology opens new perspectives and enables ground-breaking innovations. Two-dimensional van der Waals materials and more specific, 2D chalcogenides are a promising class of new materials awaiting their usage in the semiconductor industry. However, the integration of van der Waals materials relying on industry-compatible manufacturing processes is still a major challenge. This is currently restricting the application of these new materials to the research laboratories environment only. The large-area and single-crystalline growth of van der Waals mater…
The growing families of two-dimensional crystals derived from naturally occurring van der Waals materials offer an unprecedented platform to investigate elusive physical phenomena and could be of use in a diverse range of devices. Of particular interest are recently reported atomic sheets of non-van der Waals materials, which could allow a better comprehension of the nature of structural bonds and increase the functionality of prospective heterostructures. Here, we study the optostructural properties of ultrathin non-van der Waals InGaS3 sheets produced by standard mechanical cleavage. Our ab …
Among several well-known transition metal-based compounds, the van der Waals (vdW) Fe3-xGeTe2 (FGT) magnet is a strong candidate for use in two-dimensional (2D) magnetic devices due to its strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, sizeable Curie temperature (TC ~ 154 K), and versatile magnetic character that is retained in the low-dimensional limit. While the TC remains far too low for practical applications, there has been a successful push toward improving it via external driving forces such as pressure, irradiation, and doping. Here we present experimental evidence of a novel room-temperatu…
Although sheets of layered van der Waals solids offer great opportunities to custom-design nanomaterial properties, their weak interlayer adhesion challenges structural stability against mechanical deformation. Here, bending-induced delamination of multilayer sheets is investigated by molecular dynamics simulations, using graphene as an archetypal van der Waals solid. Simulations show that delamination of a graphene sheet occurs when its radius of curvature decreases roughly below $R_c=5.3\text{nm}\times (\text{number of layers})^{3/2}$ and that, as a rule, one-third of the layers get delamina…
Heat conduction mechanisms in superlattices could be different across different types of interfaces. Van der Waals superlattices are structures physically assembled through weak van der Waals interactions by design, and may host properties beyond the traditional limits of lattice matching and processing compatibility, offering new types of interfaces. In this work, natural van der Waals (SnS)1.17(NbS2)n superlattices are synthesized, and their thermal conductivities are measured by time-domain thermoreflectance as a function of interface density. Our results show that heat conduction of (SnS)1…
The valence band of a variety of few-layer, two-dimensional materials consists of a ring of states in the Brillouin zone. The energy-momentum relation has the form of a `Mexican hat' or a Rashba dispersion. The two-dimensional density of states is singular at or near the band edge, and the band-edge density of modes turns on nearly abruptly as a step function. The large band-edge density of modes enhances the Seebeck coefficient, the power factor, and the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT. Electronic and thermoelectric properties are determined from ab initio calculations for few-layer III-VI …
Adhesion is a key issue for researchers of various fields, it is therefore of uppermost importance to understand the parameters that are involved. Commonly, only surface parameters are employed to determine the adhesive forces between materials. Yet, van der Waals forces act not only between atoms in the vicinity of the surface, but also between atoms in the bulk material. In this review, we describe the principles of van der Waals interactions and outline experimental and theoretical studies investigating the influence of the subsurface material on adhesion. In addition, we present a collecti…
We establish a general equivalence between van der Waals interaction energies within the formalism of the non-local van der Waals functional of the density functional theory and within the formalism of the field approach based on the secular determinants of the electromagnetic field modes. We then compare the two methods explicitly in the case of a planparallel geometry with a continuously varying dielectric response function and show that their respective numerical implementations are not equivalent. This allows us to discuss the merits of the two approaches and possible advantages of either …
We propose a practical approach to spin-polarized systems within the van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF). The method was applied to a gas phase oxygen molecule and a parallel (H-type) pair of oxygen molecules. It was found that vdW-DF improves the equilibrium distance and binding energy. In particular, one type of vdW-DF can describe such systems reasonably well. The van der Waals interaction has been confirmed to have an energy comparable to the magnetic one, while emerging at a distance rather longer than the latter.
We used the binding energy-bond-charge model to study the atomic bonding and electrical properties of the two-dimensional graphene/BN van der Waals heterostructure. We manipulated its atomic bonding and electrical properties by manufacturing defects. We discovered that this process yielded a band structure with a flat band, i.e., a horizontal band structure without dispersion at the Fermi level. Thus, our research is significant because it is the first report on this flat band of defect graphene/BN van der Waals heterostructures.
A simple and computationally efficient scheme to calculate approximate imaginary-frequency dependent polarizability, hence asymptotic van der Waals coefficient, within density functional theory is proposed. The dynamical dipolar polarizabilities of atoms and molecules are calculated starting from the Thomas-Fermi-von Weizsäcker (TFvW) approximation for the independent-electron kinetic energy functional. The van der Waals coefficients for a number of closed-shell ions and a few molecules are hence calculated and compared with available values obtained by fully first-principles calculations. The…
The existence of strongly bound excitons is one of the hallmarks of the newly discovered atomically thin semi-conductors. While it is understood that the large binding energy is mainly due to the weak dielectric screening in two dimensions (2D), a systematic investigation of the role of screening on 2D excitons is still lacking. Here we provide a critical assessment of a widely used 2D hydrogenic exciton model which assumes a dielectric function of the form ε(q) = 1 + 2παq, and we develop a quasi-2D model with a much broader applicability. Within the quasi-2D picture, electrons and holes are d…
The exfoliation energy - quantifying the energy required to extract a two-dimensional (2D) sheet from the surface of a bulk material - is a key parameter determining the synthesizability of 2D compounds. Here, using ab initio calculations, we present a new group of non-van der Waals 2D materials derived from non-layered crystals which exhibit ultra low exfoliation energies. In particular for sulfides, surface relaxations are essential to correctly describe the associated energy gain needed to obtain reliable results. Taking into account long-range dispersive interactions has only a minor effec…
Van der Waals semiconductor heterostructures could be a platform to harness hot photoexcited carriers in the next generation of optoelectronic and photovoltaic devices. The internal quantum efficiency of hot-carrier devices is determined by the relation between photocarrier extraction and thermalization rates. Using \textit{ab-initio} methods we show that the photocarrier thermalization time in single-layer transition metal dichalcogenides strongly depends on the peculiarities of the phonon spectrum and the electronic spin-orbit coupling. In detail, the lifted spin degeneracy in the valence ba…
We examined what interactions control the sign and strength of the interlayer coupling in van der Waals ferromagnets such as Fe3-xGeTe2, Cr2Ge2Te6, CrI3 and VI3, to find that high-spin orbital interaction across the van der Waals gaps are a key to understanding their ferromagnetism. Interlayer ferromagnetic coupling in Fe3-xGeTe2 Cr2Ge2Te6, and CrI3 is governed by the high-spin two-orbital two-electron destabilization, but that in VI3 by the high-spin four-orbital two-electron stabilization. These interactions explain a number of seemingly puzzling observations in van der Waals fer-romagnets.
We study the dynamical properties of point-like defects, represented by monoatomic chalcogen vacancies, in WS$_2$-graphene and MoS$_2$-graphene heterobilayers. Employing a multidisciplinary approach based on the combination of ab initio, model Hamiltonian and density matrix techniques, we propose a minimal interacting model that allows for the calculation of electronic transition times associated to population and depopulation of the vacancy by an additional electron. We obtain the "coarse-grained" semiclassical dynamics by means of a master equation approach and discuss the potential role of …
We propose a robust and efficient way of controlling the optical spectra of two-dimensional materials and van der Waals heterostructures by quantum cavity embedding. The cavity light-matter coupling leads to the formation of exciton-polaritons, a superposition of photons and excitons. Our first principles study demonstrates a reordering and mixing of bright and dark excitons spectral features and in the case of a type II van-der-Waals heterostructure an inversion of intra and interlayer excitonic resonances. We further show that the cavity light-matter coupling strongly depends on the dielectr…
Ferroelectric van der Waals heterostructures provide a natural platform to design a variety of electrically controllable devices. In this work, we demonstrate that AB bilayer graphene encapsulated in MoTe$_2$ acts as a valley valve that displays a switchable built-in topological gap, leading to ferroelectrically driven topological channels. Using a combination of ab initio calculations and low energy models, we show that the ferroelectric order of MoTe$_2$ allows the control of the gap opening in bilayer graphene and leads to topological channels between different ferroelectric domains. Moreov…
Water is of the utmost importance for life and technology. However, a genuinely predictive ab initio model of water has eluded scientists. We demonstrate that a fully ab initio approach, relying on the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) density functional, provides such a description of water. SCAN accurately describes the balance among covalent bonds, hydrogen bonds, and van der Waals interactions that dictates the structure and dynamics of liquid water. Notably, SCAN captures the density difference between water and ice I{\it h} at ambient conditions, as well as many import…
Being used in optoelectronic devices as ultra-thin conductor-insulator junctions, detailed investigations are needed about how exactly h-BN and graphene hybridize. Here, we present a comprehensive ab initio study of hot carrier dynamics governed by electron-phonon scattering at the h-BN/graphene interface, using graphite (bulk), monolayer and bilayer graphene as benchmark materials. In contrast to monolayer graphene, all multilayer structures possess low-energy optical phonon modes that facilitate carrier thermalization. We find that the h-BN/graphene interface represents an exception with com…
The recent emergence of 2D van der Waals magnets down to atomic layer thickness provides an exciting platform for exploring quantum magnetism and spintronics applications. The van der Waals nature stabilizes the long-range ferromagnetic order as a result of magnetic anisotropy. Furthermore, giant tunneling magnetoresistance and electrical control of magnetism have been reported. However, the potential of 2D van der Waals magnets for magnonics, magnon-based spintronics, has not been explored yet. Here, we report the experimental observation of long-distance magnon transport in quasi-twodimensio…
We study the dependence of the heat transfer and the van der Waals friction between two semi-infinite solids on the dielectric properties of the bodies. We show that the heat transfer and van der Waals friction at short separation between the solids may increase by many orders of magnitude when the surfaces are covered by adsorbates, or can support low-frequency surface plasmons. In this case the heat transfer and van der Waals friction are determined by resonant photon tunneling between adsorbate vibrational modes, or surface plasmon modes. The enhancement of the van der Waals friction is esp…
