We propose a scheme for monitoring coherent quantum dynamics with good time-resolution and low backaction, which relies on the response of the considered quantum system to high-frequency ac driving. An approximate analytical solution of the corresponding quantum master equation reveals that the phase of an outgoing signal, which can directly be measured in an experiment with lock-in technique, is proportional to the expectation value of a particular system observable. This result is corroborated by the numerical solution of the master equation for a charge qubit realized with a Cooper-pair box, where we focus on monitoring coherent oscillations.

We study the decoherence effect of charge noise on a single flip-flop qubit and two dipole-coupled qubits. We find that a single flip-flop qubit is highly resistant to charge noise at its sweet spots. However, due to the proximity of the charge excited states to the flip-flop logical states, the presence of charge noise greatly reduces the fidelity of two-qubit operations. We identify leakage from the qubit Hilbert space as the main culprit for the reduced gate fidelity. We also explore different bias conditions to mitigate this decoherence channel.
Solid-state qubits incorporating quantum dots can be read out by gate reflectometry. Here, we theoretically describe physical mechanisms that render such reflectometry-based readout schemes imperfect. We discuss charge qubits, singlet-triplet spin qubits, and Majorana qubits. In our model, we account for readout errors due to slow charge noise, and due to overdriving, when a too strong probe is causing errors. A key result is that for charge and spin qubits, the readout fidelity saturates at large probe strengths, whereas for Majorana qubits, there is an optimal probe strength which provides a…
In this theoretical manuscript I propose a scheme for entangling a single electron semiconductor spin qubit with a single electron semiconductor charge qubit in a triangular triple quantum dot configuration. Two out of three quantum dots are used to define a single electron semiconductor charge qubit. Furthermore, the spin qubit is embedded in the Zeeman sub-levels of the third quantum dot. Combining single qubit gates with entangling CNOT gates allows one to construct a SWAP gate, and therefore to use the semiconductor spin qubit as a long-lived memory for the semiconductor charge qubit.
Charge noise is the main hurdle preventing high-fidelity operation, in particular that of two-qubit gates, of semiconductor-quantum-dot-based spin qubits. While certain sweet spots where charge noise is substantially suppressed have been demonstrated in several types of spin qubits, the existence of one for coupled singlet-triplet qubits is unclear. We theoretically demonstrate, using full configuration-interaction calculations, that a range of nearly sweet spots appear in the coupled singlet-triplet qubit system when a strong enough magnetic field is applied externally. We further demonstrate…
We propose the implementation of the Swap Test using a charge qubit in a double quantum dot. The Swap Test is a fundamental quantum subroutine in quantum machine learning and other applications for estimating the fidelity of two unknown quantum states by measuring an auxiliary qubit. Our proposal uses a controlled three-qubit gate which is natural to quantum-dot charge qubits. It allows us to implement a Swap Test with a circuit depth of six layers, and an estimated gate time of less than 3 ns, that is below the coherence time of double quantum dots. This work paves the way for enhancing the t…
Electron charge qubits are compelling candidates for solid-state quantum computing because of their inherent simplicity in qubit design, fabrication, control, and readout. However, all existing electron charge qubits, built upon conventional semiconductors and superconductors, suffer from severe charge noise that limits the coherence time to the order of 1 microsecond. Here, we report our experimental realization of ultralong-coherence electron charge qubits, based upon isolated single electrons trapped on an ultraclean solid neon surface in vacuum. Quantum information is encoded in the motion…
Improving Intrinsic Decoherence in Multi-Quantum-Dot Charge Qubits
A key challenge for semiconductor quantum-dot charge qubits is the realization of long-range qubit coupling and performing high-fidelity gates based on it. Here, we describe a new type of charge qubit formed by an electron confined in a triple-quantum-dot system, enabling single and two-qubit gates working in the dipolar and quadrupolar detuning sweet spots. We further present the form for the long-range dipolar coupling between the charge qubit and the superconducting resonator. Based on the hybrid system composed of the qubits and the resonator, we present two types of entangling gates: the …
