Considered is the multiplicative semigroup of ratios of products of principal minors bounded over all positive definite matrices. A long history of literature identifies various elements of this semigroup, all of which lie in a sub-semigroup generated by Hadamard-Fischer inequalities. Via cone-theoretic techniques and the patterns of nullity among positive semidefinite matrices, a semigroup containing all bounded ratios is given. This allows the complete determination of the semigroup of bounded ratios for 4-by-4 positive definite matrices, whose 46 generators include ratios not implied by Hadamard-Fischer and ratios not bounded by 1. For n > 4 it is shown that the containment of semigroups is strict, but a generalization of nullity patterns, of which one example is given, is conjectured to provide a finite determination of all bounded ratios.
A generalized tournament matrix $M$ is a nonnegative matrix that satisfies $M+M^{t}=J-I$, where $J$ is the all ones matrix and $I$ is the identity matrix. In this paper, a characterization of generalized tournament matrices with the same principal minors of orders $2$, $3$, and $4$ is given. In particular, it is proven that the principal minors of orders $2$, $3$, and $4$ determine the rest of the principal minors.
Our motivation comes from the work of Engel and Schneider (1980). Their main theorem implies that two symmetric matrices have equal corresponding principal minors of all orders if and only if they are diagonally similar. This study was continued by Hartfiel and Loewy (1984). They found sufficient conditions under which two $n\times n$ matrices\ $A$ and $B$ have equal corresponding principal minors of all orders if and only if $B$ or its transpose $B^{t}$ is diagonally similar to $A$. In this paper, we give a new way to construct a pair of skew-symmetric having equal corresponding principal min…
The algebraic relations between the principal minors of an $n\times n$ matrix are somewhat mysterious, see e.g. [lin-sturmfels]. We show, however, that by adding in certain \emph{almost} principal minors, the relations are generated by a single relation, the so-called hexahedron relation, which is a composition of six cluster mutations. We give in particular a Laurent-polynomial parameterization of the space of $n\times n$ matrices, whose parameters consist of certain principal and almost principal minors. The parameters naturally live on vertices and faces of the tiles in a rhombus tiling of …
Let $T$ be a tree with a vertex set $\{ 1,2,\dots, N \}$. Denote by $d_{ij}$ the distance between vertices $i$ and $j$. In this paper, we present an explicit combinatorial formula of principal minors of the matrix $(t^{d_{ij}})$, and its applications to tropical geometry, study of multivariate stable polynomials, and representation of valuated matroids. We also give an analogous formula for a skew-symmetric matrix associated with $T$.
A minor of a matrix is quasi-principal if it is a principal or an almost-principal minor. The quasi principal rank characteristic sequence (qpr-sequence) of an $n\times n$ symmetric matrix is introduced, which is defined as $q_1 q_2 \cdots q_n$, where $q_k$ is $\tt A$, $\tt S$, or $\tt N$, according as all, some but not all, or none of its quasi-principal minors of order $k$ are nonzero. This sequence extends the principal rank characteristic sequences in the literature, which only depend on the principal minors of the matrix. A necessary condition for the attainability of a qpr-sequence is es…
The signed enhanced principal rank characteristic sequence (sepr-sequence) of an $n \times n$ Hermitian matrix is the sequence $t_1t_2 \cdots t_n$, where $t_k$ is either $\tt A^*$, $\tt A^+$, $\tt A^-$, $\tt N$, $\tt S^*$, $\tt S^+$, or $\tt S^-$ based on the following criteria: $t_k = \tt A^*$ if $B$ has both a positive and a negative order-$k$ principal minor, and each order-$k$ principal minor is nonzero. $t_k = \tt A^+$ (respectively, $t_k = \tt A^-$) if each order-$k$ principal minor is positive (respectively, negative). $t_k = \tt N$ if each order-$k$ principal minor is zero. $t_k = \tt …
In this paper we explore determinantal representations of multiaffine polynomials and consequences for the image of various spaces of matrices under the principal minor map. We show that a real multiaffine polynomial has a definite Hermitian determinantal representation if and only if all of its so-called Rayleigh differences factor as Hermitian squares and use this characterization to conclude that the image of the space of Hermitian matrices under the principal minor map is cut out by the orbit of finitely many equations and inequalities under the action of $({\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{R}))^{n} \rti…
The almost-principal rank characteristic sequence (apr-sequence) of an $n\times n$ symmetric matrix is introduced, which is defined to be the string $a_1 a_2 \cdots a_{n-1}$, where $a_k$ is either $\tt A$, $\tt S$, or $\tt N$, according as all, some but not all, or none of its almost-principal minors of order $k$ are nonzero. In contrast to the other principal rank characteristic sequences in the literature, the apr-sequence of a matrix does not depend on principal minors. The almost-principal rank of a symmetric matrix $B$, denoted by ${\rm aprank}(B)$, is defined as the size of a largest non…
A half-tree is an edge configuration whose superimposition with a perfect matching is a tree. In this paper, we prove a half-tree theorem for the Pfaffian principal minors of a skew-symmetric matrix whose column sum is zero; introducing an explicit algorithm, we fully characterize half-trees involved. This question naturally arose in the context of statistical mechanics where we aimed at relating perfect matchings and trees on the same graph. As a consequence of the Pfaffian half-tree theorem, we obtain a refined version of the matrix-tree theorem in the case of skew-symmetric matrices, as wel…
Let $V$ be a nonempty finite set and $A=(a_{ij})_{i,j\in V}$ be a matrix with entries in a field $\mathbb{K}$. For a subset $X$ of $V$, we denote by $A[X]$ the submatrix of $A$ having row and column indices in $X$. We study the following problem. Given a positive integer $k$, what is the relationship between two matrices $A=(a_{ij})_{i,j\in V}$, $B=(b_{ij})_{i,j\in V}$ with entries in $\mathbb{K}$ and such that $\det(A\left[ X\right])=\det(B\left[ X\right])$ for any subset $X$ of $V$ of size at most $k$ ? The Theorem that we get in this Note is an improvement of a result of R. Loewy [5] for sk…
The Minor problem, namely the study of the spectrum of a principal submatrix of a Hermitian matrix taken at random on its orbit under conjugation, is revisited, with emphasis on the use of orbital integrals and on the connection with branching coefficients in the decomposition of an irreducible representation of U(n), resp. SU(n), into irreps of U(n-1), resp. SU(n-1).
A spanning tree of a graph is a connected subgraph on all vertices with the minimum number of edges. The number of spanning trees in a graph $G$ is given by Matrix Tree Theorem in terms of principal minors of Laplacian matrix of $G$. We show a similar combinatorial interpretation for principal minors of signless Laplacian $Q$. We also prove that the number of odd cycles in $G$ is less than or equal to $\frac{\det(Q)}{4}$, where the equality holds if and only if $G$ is a bipartite graph or an odd-unicyclic graph.
A conjecture of Barrett, Butler and Hall may be stated as follows: If $n \geq 3$ and $A \in \{0,1\}^{n \times n}$ (the family of $n \times n$ 0--1 matrices) is a nonsingular symmetric matrix, then the following two statements are equivalent: (a) All of the principal minors of $A$ of order $n-2$ are zero; and (b) $A^{-1}$ is a matrix all of whose entries have the same modulus and all of whose diagonal entries are equal. We show that this conjecture holds if $A$ does not have both a zero and a nonzero principal minor of order $n-4$ (if $n \geq 5$). The parity of the principal minors of nonsingul…

Kenyon and Pemantle (2014) gave a formula for the entries of a square matrix in terms of connected principal and almost-principal minors. Each entry is an explicit Laurent polynomial whose terms are the weights of domino tilings of a half Aztec diamond. They conjectured an analogue of this parametrization for symmetric matrices, where the Laurent monomials are indexed by Catalan paths. In this paper we prove the Kenyon-Pemantle conjecture, and apply this to a statistics problem pioneered by Joe (2006). Correlation matrices are represented by an explicit bijection from the cube to the elliptope…
