We study the Kondo lattice model which is modified by the Holstein term, involving both the Kondo exchange coupling and the electron-phonon coupling constants, characterized by $J$ and $g$, respectively. The model is solved by employing the dynamical mean-field theory in conjunction with exact diagonalization technique. A zero temperature phase diagram of symmetry unbroken states at half filling is mapped out which exhibits an interplay between the two interactions and accounts for both spin and charge fluctuations. When the Kondo exchange coupling is dominant the system is in Kondo insulator state. Increasing $g$ for small values of $J$ leads to a Kondo insulator-metal transition. Upon further enhancement of $g$ a transition to the bipolaronic insulating phase takes place. Also a small region with non-Fermi liquid behavior is found near the Kondo insulator-metal transition.
We study the Hubbard-Holstein model, which includes both the electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions characterized by $U$ and $g$, respectively, employing the dynamical mean-field theory combined with Wilson's numerical renormalization group technique. A zero temperature phase diagram of metal-insulator and insulator-insulator transitions at half-filling is mapped out which exhibits the interplay between $U$ and $g$. As $U$ ($g$) is increased, a metal to Mott-Hubbard insulator (bipolaron insulator) transition occurs, and the two insulating states are distinct and can not be adiabati…
We derive an effective electronic Hamiltonian for square lattice Hubbard-Holstein model (HHM) in the strong electron-electron (e-e) and electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling regime and under non-adiabatic conditions ($t/ω_0 \leq 1$), $t$ and $ω_0$ being the electron hopping and phonon frequency respectively. Using Density Matrix Renormalization Group method, we simulate this effective electronic model on $4-$Leg cylinder system at quarter-filling and present a phase diagram in $g-U$ plane where $g$ and $U$ are being the e-ph coupling constant and Hubbard on-site interaction respectively. For larger …
We study the Holstein-Hubbard model at half filling to explore the ordered phases such as the charge density wave and antiferromagnet. The Coulomb interaction is rewritten in terms of auxiliary fields. By treating the auxiliary fields and phonons as classical, we obtain real space features of the system and transition between the phases from weak to strong coupling. When both interactions are weak, mutual competition between them leads to a metallic phase in an otherwise insulator dominated phase diagram. Spatial correlations induced by thermal fluctuations lead to pseudogap features at interm…
Thermal and optical conductivity in the Holstein model at half filling and at finite temperature in the Luttinger-liquid and charge-density-wave regime
We derive an effective Hamiltonian for the two-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model in the regimes of strong electron-electron and strong electron-phonon interactions by using a nonperturbative approach. In the parameter region where the system manifests the existence of a correlated singlet phase, the effective Hamiltonian transforms to a $t_1-V_1-V_2-V_3$ Hamiltonian for hard-core-bosons on a checkerboard lattice. We employ quantum Monte Carlo simulations, involving stochastic-series-expansion technique, to obtain the ground state phase diagram. At filling $1/8$, as the strength of off-site re…
The ground state phase diagram of the half-filled one-dimensional Holstein-Hubbard model contains a charge-density-wave (CDW) phase, driven by the electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling, and a spin-density-wave (SDW) phase, driven by the on-site electron-electron (e-e) repulsion. Recently, the existence of a third phase, which is metallic and lies in a finite region of parameter space between these two gapped phases, has been claimed. We study this claim using a renormalization-group method for interacting electrons that has been extended to include also e-ph couplings. Our method treats e-e and e-ph…
We study the spin-$\frac32$ Hubbard-Kondo lattice model by means of the Composite Operator Method, after applying a Holstein-Primakov transformation. The spin and particle dynamics in the ferromagnetic state are calculated by taking into account strong on-site correlations between electrons and antiferromagnetic exchange among $\frac32$ spins, together with usual Hund coupling between electrons and spins.
We study the effects of anharmonicity on the physics of the Holstein model, which describes the coupling of itinerant fermions and localized quantum phonons, by introducing a quartic term in the phonon potential energy. We find that the presence of this anharmonic term reduces the extent of the charge density wave phase (CDW) at half-filling as well as the transition temperature to this phase. Doping away from half-filling, we observe a first order phase transition between the CDW and a homogeneous phase which is also present in the harmonic model. In addition, we study the evolution of the su…
Low-energy properties of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model are investigated by using bosonization and renormalization group methods. The formation of the spin and charge excitation gaps at half-filling is discussed in detail both for antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic Kondo couplings. Also, the effect of the interaction between conduction electrons on the gap formation is studied both for the Kondo insulating phase and for the Haldane gap phase. It is found that while the repulsive interaction changes the dependence of the excitation gap on the Kondo exchange coupling, the attractive in…
We study the one-dimensional Holstein model of spinless fermions interacting with dispersion-less phonons by using a recently developed projector-based renormalization method (PRM). At half-filling the system shows a metal-insulator transition to a Peierls distorted state at a critical electron-phonon coupling where both phases are described within the same theoretical framework. The transition is accompanied by a phonon softening at the Brillouin zone boundary and a gap in the electronic spectrum. For different filling, the phonon softening appears away from the Brillouin zone boundary and th…
We establish a mapping of a general spin-fermion system in one dimension into a classical generalized Coulomb gas. This mapping allows a renormalization group treatment of the anisotropic Kondo chain both at and away from half-filling. We find that the phase diagram contains regions of paramagnetism, partial and full ferromagnetic order. We also use the method to analyze the phases of the Ising-Kondo chain.
The normal state of the Holstein model is studied at half-filling in infinite dimensions and in the adiabatic regime. The dynamical mean-field equations are solved using perturbation expansions around the extremal paths of the effective action for the atoms. We find that the Migdal-Eliashberg expansion breaks down in the metallic state if the electron-phonon coupling $λ$ exceeds a value of about 1.3 in spite of the fact that the formal expansion parameter $λω_0/E_F$ ($ω_0$ is the phonon frequency, $E_F$ the Fermi energy) is much smaller than 1. The breakdown is due to the appearance of more th…
We have analyzed the antiferromagnetic (J>0) Kondo-Hubbard lattice with the band at half-filling by means of a perturbative approach in the strong coupling limit, the small parameter is an arbitrary tight-binding band. The results are valid for any band shape and any dimension. We have obtained the energies of elementary charge and spin excitations as well as the magnetic correlations in order to elucidate the magnetic and charge behavior of the Kondo lattice at half-filling. Finally, we have briefly analyzed the ferromagnetic case (J<0), which is shown to be equivalent to an effective antifer…
We present theoretical results for a Kondo-lattice model with spin-1/2 localized moments, including both the intrasite Kondo coupling and an intersite antiferromagnetic exchange interaction, treated within an extended mean-field approximation. We describe here the case of a non-integer conduction-band filling for which an ``exhaustion'' problem arises when the number of conduction electrons is not large enough to screen all the lattice spins. This is best seen in the computed magnetic susceptibility. The Kondo temperature so obtained is different from the single-impurity one, and increases for…
We discuss Kondo behavior of a conduction electron system coupled with local optical phonon by analyzing the Anderson-Holstein model with the use of a numerical renormalization group (NRG) method. There appear three typical regions due to the balance between Coulomb interaction $U_{\rm ee}$ and phonon-mediated attraction $U_{\rm ph}$. For $U_{\rm ee}>U_{\rm ph}$, we observe the standard Kondo effect concerning spin degree of freedom. Since the Coulomb interaction is effectively reduced as $U_{\rm ee}-U_{\rm ph}$, the Kondo temperature $T_{\rm K}$ is increased when $U_{\rm ph}$ is increased. On…
We study the competition between Kondo screening and frustrated magnetism on the non-symmorphic Shastry-Sutherland Kondo lattice at a filling of two conduction electrons per unit cell. A previous analysis of this model identified a set of gapless partially Kondo screened phases intermediate between the Kondo-destroyed paramagnet and the heavy Fermi liquid. Based on crystal symmetries, we argue that (i)~both the paramagnet and the heavy Fermi liquid are {\it semimetals} protected by a glide symmetry; and (ii)~partial Kondo screening breaks the symmetry, removing this protection and allowing the…
The usual Kondo-lattice, including an antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between nearest-neighboring localized spins, is treated here in a mean-field scheme that introduces two mean-field parameters: one associated with the local Kondo effect, and the other related to the magnetic correlations between localized spins. Phases with short-range magnetic correlations or coexistence between those and the Kondo effect are obtained. By varying the number of electrons in the conduction band, we notice that the Kondo effect tends to be suppressed away from half filling, while magnetic correlations …
We study one dimensional {\it extended} Kondo lattice model, described by the $t-J$ Hamiltonian for conduction electrons away from half filling and the Heisenberg Hamiltonian for localized spins at half filling. Following Shankar,\cite{Shankar} we find an effective field theory for this model, where doped holes are represented by massless Dirac fermions (holons) and spin excitations are fractionalized into relativistic bosons (spinons). These holons and spinons interact via U(1) gauge fluctuations. Effects of Berry phase to the localized spins disappear due to the presence of Kondo couplings, …
Among the mechanisms for lattice structural deformation, the electron-phonon interaction mediated Peierls charge-density-wave (CDW) instability in single band low-dimensional systems is perhaps the most ubiquitous. The standard mean-field picture predicts that the CDW transition occurs at all fillings and all values of the electron-phonon coupling $g$ and the adiabaticity parameter $t/ω_0$. Here, we correct the mean-field expression for the Peierls instability condition by showing that the non-interacting static susceptibility, at twice the Fermi momentum, should be replaced by the dynamic one…
We study the spectral properties of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model as function of the exchange coupling, the band filling, and the quasimomentum in the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phase. Using the density-matrix renormalization group method, we compute the dispersion relation of the quasiparticles, their lifetimes, and the Z-factor. As a main result, we provide evidence for the existence of the spinpolaron at partial band fillings. We find that the quasiparticle lifetime differs by orders of magnitude between the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phase and depends strongly on the quas…
An effective Hamiltonian for the localized spins in the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model is derived via a unitary transformation involving a bosonization of delocalized conduction electrons. The effective Hamiltonian is shown to reproduce all the features of the model as identified in various numerical simulations, and provides much new information on the ferro- to paramagnetic phase transition and the paramagnetic phase.
The Hubbard-Holstein model is one of the simplest to incorporate both electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions. In one dimension at half filling the Holstein electron-phonon coupling promotes onsite pairs of electrons and a Peierls charge density wave while the Hubbard onsite Coulomb repulsion U promotes antiferromagnetic correlations and a Mott insulating state. Recent numerical studies have found a possible third intermediate phase between Peierls and Mott states. From direct calculations of charge and spin susceptibilities, we show that (i) As the electron-phonon coupling is incre…
In one dimension the coupling of electrons to phonons leads to a transition from a metallic to a Peierls distorted insulated state if the coupling exceeds a critical value. On the other hand, in two dimensions the electron-phonon interaction may also lead to the formation of Cooper pairs. This competition of superconductivity and charge order (in conjunction with a lattice distortion) is studied in this letter by means of the projector-based renormalization method (PRM). Increasing the electron-phonon interaction, we find a crossover behavior between a purely superconducting state and a charge…
We have performed numerical studies of the Hubbard-Holstein model in two dimensions using determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC). Here we present details of the method, emphasizing the treatment of the lattice degrees of freedom, and then study the filling and behavior of the fermion sign as a function of model parameters. We find a region of parameter space with large Holstein coupling where the fermion sign recovers despite large values of the Hubbard interaction. This indicates that studies of correlated polarons at finite carrier concentrations are likely accessible to DQMC simulations. We…
The variational cluster approach (VCA) based on the self-energy functional theory is applied to the two-dimensional symmetric periodic Anderson model at half filling. We calculate a variety of physical quantities including the staggered moments and single-particle spectra at zero temperature to show that the symmetry breaking due to antiferromagnetic ordering occurs in the strong coupling region, whereas in the weak coupling region, the Kondo insulating state without symmetry breaking is realized. The critical interaction strength is estimated. We thus demonstrate that the phase transition due…
The single- and two-channel Kondo lattice model consisting of localized spins interacting antiferromagnetically with the itinerent electrons, are studied using dynamical mean field theory. As an impurity solver for the effective single impurity Anderson model we used the exact diagonalization (ED) method. Using ED allowed us to perform calculations for low temperatures and couplings of arbitrary large strength. Our results for the single-channel case confirm and extend the recent investigations. In the two-channel case we find a symmetry breaking phase transition with increasing coupling stren…
Numerical investigation on the thermodynamic properties of an Ising spin Kondo lattice model on a kagome lattice is reported. By using Monte Carlo simulation, we investigated the magnetic phases at 1/3-filling. We identified two successive transitions from high-temperature paramagnetic state to a Kosterlitz-Thouless-like phase in an intermediate temperature range and to a partially disordered phase at a lower temperature. The partially disordered state is characterized by coexistence of antiferromagnetic hexagons and paramagnetic sites with period $\sqrt3 \times \sqrt3$. We compare the results…
We present a method for solving impurity models with electron-phonon coupling, which treats the phonons efficiently and without approximations. The algorithm is applied to the Holstein-Hubbard model in the dynamical mean field approximation, where it allows access to strong interactions, very low temperatures and arbitrary fillings. We show that a renormalized Migdal-Eliashberg theory provides a reasonlable description of the phonon contribution to the electronic self energy in strongly doped systems, but fails if the quasiparticle energy becomes of order of the phonon frequency.
In order to clarify the physics of the crossover from a spin-density-wave (SDW) Mott insulator to a charge-density-wave (CDW) Peierls insulator in one-dimensional (1D) systems, we investigate the Hubbard-Holstein Hamiltonian at half filling within a density matrix renormalisation group (DMRG) approach. Determining the spin and charge correlation exponents, the momentum distribution function, and various excitation gaps, we confirm that an intervening metallic phase expands the SDW-CDW transition in the weak-coupling regime.
The competition between Kondo screening and indirect magnetic exchange is studied for a system with geometrical frustration using dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). We systematically scan the weak- to strong-coupling regime of the periodic Anderson model on the triangular lattice for a wide range of fillings n. The magnetic phase diagram is derived using a site-dependent DMFT approach by self-consistent mapping onto three independent single-impurity models corresponding to the three correlated f orbitals in the unit cell. At half-filling, the system is a non-magnetic Kondo insulator for all c…
Within a mean-field approximation, the ground state and finite temperature phase diagrams of the two-dimensional Kondo lattice model have been carefully studied as functions of the Kondo coupling $J$ and the conduction electron concentration $n_{c}$. In addition to the conventional hybridization between local moments and itinerant electrons, a staggered hybridization is proposed to characterize the interplay between the antiferromagnetism and the Kondo screening effect. As a result, a heavy fermion antiferromagnetic phase is obtained and separated from the pure antiferromagnetic ordered phase …
We present the phase diagram and dynamical correlation functions for the Holstein-Hubbard model at half filling and at zero temperature. The calculations are based on the Dynamical Mean Field Theory. The effective impurity model is solved using Exact Diagonalization and the Numerical Renormalization Group. Excluding long-range order, we find three different paramagnetic phases, metallic, bipolaronic and Mott insulating, depending on the Hubbard interaction U and the electron-phonon coupling g. We present the behaviour of the one-electron spectral functions and phonon spectra close to the metal…
We study higher-spin ($S \geq 1$) generalization of the one-dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg model, in which the local spin-$S$ moments of the Kondo lattice model interact with each other via the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction ($J_{\text{H}}$), by analytical and numerical methods. The strong-coupling (i.e., large Kondo-coupling) expansion maps out an insulating phase at half-filling whose magnetic correlation depends on the parity of $2S$ as well as a ferromagnetic metallic phase which dominates the strong-coupling region at generic fillings. Then, we carried out the Density-Matrix Renor…
We introduce a new type of Gutzwiller variational wavefunction for correlated electrons coupled to phonons, able to treat on equal footing electronic and lattice degrees of freedom. We benchmark the wavefunction in the infinite-$U$ Hubbard-Holstein model away from half-filling on a Bethe lattice, where we can directly compare with exact results by Dynamical Mean-Field Theory. For this model, we find that variational results agree perfectly well with the exact ones. In particular the wavefunction correctly describes the crossover to a heavy polaron gas upon increasing the electron-phonon coupli…
We derive an effective Hamiltonian for the one-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model, valid in a regime of both strong electron-electron (e-e) and electron-phonon (e-ph) interactions and in the non-adiabatic limit ($t/ω_0 \leq 1$), by using a non-perturbative approach. We obtain the phase diagram at quarter-filling by employing a modified Lanczos method and studying various density-density correlations. The spin-spin AF (antiferromagnetic) interactions and nearest-neighbor repulsion, resulting from the e-e and the e-ph interactions respectively, are the dominant terms (compared to hopping) and co…
We present a detailed numerical study of the Hubbard-Holstein model in one dimension at half filling, including full finite-frequency quantum phonons. At half filling, the effects of the electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions compete, with the Holstein phonon coupling acting as an effective negative Hubbard onsite interaction U that promotes on-site electron pairs and a Peierls charge-density wave state. Most previous work on this model has assumed that only Peierls or U>0 Mott insulator phases are possible at half filling. However, there has been speculation that a third metallic …
Recent experiments have suggested that the electron-phonon coupling may play an important role in the $γ\rightarrow α$ volume collapse transition in Cerium. A minimal model for the description of such transition is the periodic Anderson model. In order to better understand the effect of the electron-phonon interaction on the volume collapse transition, we study the periodic Anderson model with coupling between Holstein phonons and electrons in the conduction band. We find that the electron-phonon coupling enhances the volume collapse, which is consistent with experiments in Cerium. While we st…
The search for realistic one-dimensional (1D) models that exhibit dominant superconducting (SC) fluctuations effects has a long history. In these 1D systems, the effects of commensurate band fillings--strongest at half-filling--and electronic repulsions typically lead to a finite charge gap and the favoring of insulating density wave ordering over superconductivity. Accordingly, recent proposals suggesting a gapless metallic state in the Holstein-Hubbard (HH) model, possibly superconducting, have generated considerable interest and controversy, with the most recent work demonstrating that the …
We determine the boundary of the fully polarized ferromagnetic ground state in the one dimensional Kondo lattice model at partial conduction electron band filling by using a newly developed infinite size DMRG method which conserves the total spin quantum number. The obtained paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase boundary is below $J \approx 3.5$ for the whole range of band filling. By this we solve the controversy in the phase diagram over the extent of the ferromagnetic region close to half filling.
Motivated by the current interest in the understanding of the Mott insulators away from half filling, observed in many perovskite oxides, we study the Mott metal-insulator transition (MIT) in the doped Hubbard-Holstein model using the Hatree-Fock mean field theory. The Hubbard-Holstein model is the simplest model containing both the Coulomb and the electron-lattice interactions, which are important ingredients in the physics of the perovskite oxides. In contrast to the half-filled Hubbard model, which always results in a single phase (either metallic or insulating), our results show that away …
We investigate electron-phonon coupling in many-electron systems using dynamical mean-field theory in combination with the numerical renormalization group. This non-perturbative method reveals significant precursor effects to the gap formation at intermediate coupling strengths. The emergence of a soft phonon mode and very strong lattice fluctuations can be understood in terms of Kondo-like physics due to the development of a double-well structure in the effective potential for the ions.
Charge order is a commonly observed phenomenon in strongly correlated materials. However, most theories are based on a repulsive inter-site Coulomb interaction in order to explain charge order. We here show that only due to local interactions, charge order is favorable in heavy fermion systems at quarter filling. The driving force is the Kondo effect, which leads to a non-linear dependence on the filling of the lattice site for the energy gain. We use dynamical mean field theory combined with numerical renormalization group to demonstrate the existence of charge order at quarter filling for a …
The Kondo lattice model introduced in 1977 describes a lattice of localized magnetic moments interacting with a sea of conduction electrons. It is one of the most important canonical models in the study of a class of rare earth compounds, called heavy fermion systems, and as such has been studied intensively by a wide variety of techniques for more than a quarter of a century. This review focuses on the one dimensional case at partial band filling, in which the number of conduction electrons is less than the number of localized moments. The theoretical understanding, based on the bosonized sol…
We study spectral properties of quasiparticles in the Kondo lattice model in one and two dimensions including the coherent quasiparticle dispersions, their spectral weights and the full two-quasiparticle spectrum using a cluster expansion scheme. We investigate the evolution of the quasiparticle band as antiferromagnetic correlations are enhanced towards the RKKY limit of the model. In both the 1D and the 2D model we find that a repulsive interaction between quasiparticles results in a distinct antibound state above the two-quasiparticle continuum. The repulsive interaction is correlated with …
We study the spin-charge separation in a Kondo-like model for an impurity with a spin and a charge (isospin) degree of freedom coupled to a single conduction channel (the ``spin-charge'' Kondo model). We show that the spin and charge Kondo effects can occur simultaneously at any coupling strength. In the continuum (wide-band or weak coupling) limit, the Kondo screening in each sector is independent, while at finite bandwidth and strong coupling the lattice effects lead to a renormalization of the effective Kondo exchange constants; nevertheless, universal spin and charge Kondo effects still oc…
We show that a nearest-neighbor singlet phase results (from an effective Hamiltonian) for the one-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model in the regime of strong electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions and under non-adiabatic conditions ($t/ω_0 \leq 1$). By mapping the system of nearest-neighbor singlets at a filling $N_p/N$ onto a hard-core-boson (HCB) $t$-$V$ model at a filling $N_p/(N-N_p)$, we demonstrate explicitly that superfluidity and charge-density-wave (CDW) occur mutually exclusively with the diagonal long range order manifesting itself only at one-third filling. Furthermore, …
Numerical calculations simulate transport experiments in carbon nanotube quantum dots (P. Jarillo-Herrero et al., Nature 434, 484 (2005)), where a strongly enhanced Kondo temperature T_K ~ 8K was associated with the SU(4) symmetry of the Hamiltonian at quarter-filling for an orbitally double-degenerate single-occupied electronic shell. Our results clearly suggest that the Kondo conductance measured for an adjacent shell with T_K ~ 16K, interpreted as a singlet-triplet Kondo effect, can be associated instead to an SU(4) Kondo effect at half-filling. Besides presenting spin-charge Kondo screenin…
In this work, we study N-leg Kondo ladders at half-filling through the density matrix renormalization group. We found non-zero spin and charge gaps for any finite number of legs and Kondo coupling $J>0$. We also show evidence of the existence of a quantum critical point in the two dimensional Kondo lattice model, in agreement with previous works. Based on the binding energy of two holes, we did not find evidence of superconductivity in the 2D Kondo lattice model close to half-filling.
We derive an effective polaronic interaction Hamiltonian, {\it exact to second order in perturbation}, for the spinless one-dimensional Holstein model. The small parameter is given by the ratio of the hopping term ($t$) to the polaronic energy ($g^2 ω_0$) in all the region of validity for our perturbation; however, the exception being the regime of extreme anti-adiabaticity ($t/ω_0 \le 0.1$) and small electron-phonon coupling ($g < 1$) where the small parameter is $t/ω_0$. We map our polaronic Hamiltonian onto a next-to-nearest-neighbor interaction anisotropic Heisenberg spin model. By studyin…
We re-examine the Peierls insulator to Mott insulator transition scenario in the one-dimensional Holstein-Hubbard model where, at half-filling, electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions compete for establishing charge- and spin-density-wave states, respectively. By means of large-scale density-matrix renormalization group calculations we determine the spin, single-particle and two-particle excitation gaps and prove--in the course of a careful finite-size scaling analysis--recent claims for an intervening metallic phase in the weak-coupling regime. We show that for large phonon frequen…
We study the low energy states of the Kondo alloy model (KAM) as function of the magnetic impurity concentration per site, x, and the conduction electron average site occupation, nc. In previous works, two different Fermi liquid regimes had been identified at strong Kondo coupling JK, that may be separated by a transition at x=nc. Here, we analyze the KAM for finite JK on a Bethe lattice structure. First, using the mean-field coherent potential approximation (DMFT-CPA) which is exact at lattice coordination Z=infty, we show that the real part of the local potential scattering may be located ou…
We consider the potential for novel forms of magnetism arising from the subtle interplay between electrons and spins in the under-screened kagome Kondo lattice model. At weak coupling, we show that incommensurate non-coplanar multi-wave vector magnetic orders arise at nearly all fillings and that this results from Fermi surface effects that introduces competing interactions between the spins. At strong coupling, we find that such complex order survives near half filling despite the presence of ferromagnetism at all other fillings. We show this arises due to state selection among a massive dege…
We analyze the global ground-state (quantum) phase diagram of the one-dimensional Holstein model at half-filling as a function of the strength of the electron-phonon coupling (represented by the strength of the phonon-induced attraction, $U$) and the phonon frequency, $ω_0$. In addition to reanalyzing the various asymptotic regimes, we have carried out density-matrix renormalization group simulations to correct previous inferences concerning the anti-adiabatic (large $ω_0$) and strong coupling (large $U$) regimes. There are two distinct phases - a fully gapped commensurate charge-density-wave …
In the spinless Holstein model at half-filling the coupling of electrons to phonons is responsible for a phase transition from a metallic state at small coupling to a Peierls distorted insulated state when the electron-phonon coupling exceeds a critical value. For the adiabatic case of small phonon frequencies, the transition is accompanied by a phonon softening at the Brillouin zone boundary whereas a hardening of the phonon mode occurs in the anti-adiabatic case. The phonon dynamics studied in this letter do not only reveal the expected renormalization of the phonon modes but also show remar…
We investigate, through the density-matrix renormalization group and the Lanczos technique, the possibility of a two-leg Kondo ladder present an incommensurate orbital order. Our results indicate a staggered short-range orbital order at half-filling. Away from half-filling our data are consistent with an incommensurate quasi-long-range orbital order. We also observed that an interaction between the localized spins enhances the rung-rung current correlations.
We study a two-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model with phonons treated in the adiabatic limit. A Hartree-Fock decomposition is employed for the Hubbard term. A range of electronic densities are discussed with special emphasis on the quarter-filling ($n=0.5$). We argue that the quarter-filled system is relevant for the electronic properties observed at the interface between LaAlO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$, where half-electron per unit cell is transferred to the TiO$_2$ layer as a consequence of the polar discontinuity at the interface. In addition to presenting the overall phase diagrams, we identify a…
The Holstein Hamiltonian describes fermions hopping on a lattice and interacting locally with dispersionless phonon degrees of freedom. In the low density limit, dressed quasiparticles, polarons and bipolarons, propagate with an effective mass. At higher densities, pairs can condense into a low temperature superconducting phase and, at or near commensurate filling on a bipartite lattice, to charge density wave (CDW) order. CDW formation breaks a discrete symmetry and hence occurs via a second order (Ising) transition, and therefore at a finite $T_{\rm cdw}$ in two dimensions. Quantum Monte Car…
