This is a proof of an asymptotic formula which describes exponentially small splitting of separatrices in a generic analytic family of area-preserving maps near a Hamiltonian saddle-centre bifurcation. As a particular case and in combination with an earlier work on a Stokes constant for the Hénon map (Gelfreich, Sauzin (2001)), it implies exponentially small transversality of separatrices in the area-preserving Hénon family when the multiplicator of the fixed point is close to one.
We consider the conservative Hénon family at the period-doubling bifurcation of its fixed point and demonstrate that the separatrices of the fixed saddle point nearing the bifurcation split exponentially: given that $λ_+$ is the smaller of the eigenvalues of the saddle point, the angle between the separatrices along the homoclinic orbit satisfies $$\sin α= O(e^{-{π^2 \over \log |λ_+|}})+ O\left( e^{-2 (1-κ) {π^2 \over \log |λ_+|}} \right),$$ for any positive $κ<1$.
We study homoclinic orbits of the Swift-Hohenberg equation near a Hamiltonian-Hopf bifurcation. It is well known that in this case the normal form of the equation is integrable at all orders. Therefore the difference between the stable and unstable manifolds is exponentially small and the study requires a method capable to detect phenomena beyond all algebraic orders provided by the normal form theory. We propose an asymptotic expansion for an homoclinic invariant which quantitatively describes the transversality of the invariant manifolds. We perform high-precision numerical experiments to su…
We study the exponentially small splitting of separatrices in an analytic one-parameter family of area-preserving maps that generically unfolds a 1:3 resonance. Near the resonance the normal form theory predicts existence of a small triangle formed by separatrices of a period three hyperbolic point. We prove that in a generic family the separatrices split, provided that the Stokes constant of the map does not vanish. This constant describes the distance between the analytical continuations of invariant manifolds associated with the degenerate saddle of the map at the exact resonance. We provid…
We consider the effect of a non-autonomous periodic perturbation on a 2-dof autonomous system obtained as a truncation of the Hamiltonian-Hopf normal form. Our analysis focuses on the behaviour of the splitting of the invariant 2-dimensional stable/unstable manifolds. We analyse the different changes of dominant harmonic in the splitting functions. We describe how the dominant harmonics depend on the quotients of the continuous fraction expansion of the periodic forcing frequency. We have considered different frequencies including quadratic irrationals, frequencies having continuous fraction e…
The aim of this work is to provide asymptotic estimates for the splitting of separatrices in a perturbed 3-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian system, associated to a 2-dimensional whiskered torus (invariant hyperbolic torus) whose frequency ratio is a quadratic irrational number. We show that the dependence of the asymptotic estimates on the perturbation parameter is described by some functions which satisfy a periodicity property, and whose behavior depends strongly on the arithmetic properties of the frequencies.
In this paper we study the splitting of separatrices phenomenon which arises when one considers a Hamiltonian System of one degree of freedom with a fast periodic or quasiperiodic and meromorphic in the state variables perturbation. The obtained results are different from the previous ones in the literature, which mainly assume algebraic or trigonometric polynomial dependence on the state variables. As a model, we consider the pendulum equation with several meromorphic perturbations and we show the sensitivity of the size of the splitting on the width of the analyticity strip of the perturbati…
We study the problem of exponentially small splitting of separatrices of one degree of freedom classical Hamiltonian systems with a non-autonomous perturbation fast and periodic in time. We provide a result valid for general systems which are algebraic or trigonometric polynomials in the state variables. It consists on obtaining a rigorous proof of the asymptotic formula for the measure of the splitting. We obtain that the splitting has the asymptotic behavior $K \varepsilon^β \text{e}^{-a/\varepsilon}$, identifying the constants $K,β,a$ in terms of the system features. We consider several cas…
We study the splitting of invariant manifolds of whiskered tori with two frequencies in nearly-integrable Hamiltonian systems, such that the hyperbolic part is given by a pendulum. We consider a 2-dimensional torus with a fast frequency vector $ω/\sqrtε$, with $ω=(1,Ω)$ where $Ω$ is an irrational number of constant type, i.e. a number whose continued fraction has bounded entries. Applying the Poincaré-Melnikov method, we find exponentially small lower bounds for the maximal splitting distance between the stable and unstable invariant manifolds associated to the invariant torus, and we show tha…
We study the exponentially small splitting of invariant manifolds of whiskered (hyperbolic) tori with two fast frequencies in nearly-integrable Hamiltonian systems whose hyperbolic part is given by a pendulum. We consider a torus whose frequency ratio is the silver number $Ω=\sqrt{2}-1$. We show that the Poincaré-Melnikov method can be applied to establish the existence of 4 transverse homoclinic orbits to the whiskered torus, and provide asymptotic estimates for the tranversality of the splitting whose dependence on the perturbation parameter $\varepsilon$ satisfies a periodicity property. We…
Using stationary phase methods, we provide an explicit formula for the Melnikov function of the one and a half degrees of freedom system given by a Hamiltonian system subject to a rapidly oscillating perturbation. Remarkably, the Melnikov function turns out to be computable without an explicit knowledge of the separatrix and in the case of non-analytic systems. This is related to a priori stable systems coupled with low regularity perturbations. It also applies to perturbations controlled by wave-type equations, so in particular we also illustrate this result with the motion of charged particl…
We consider the problem of Arnold's diffusion for nearly integrable isochronous Hamiltonian systems. We prove a shadowing theorem which improves the known estimates for the diffusion time. We also justify for three time scales systems that the splitting of the separatrices is correctly predicted by the Poincare'-Melnikov function.
In this paper we consider general nearly integrable analytic Hamiltonian systems of one and a half degrees of freedom which are a trigonometric polynomial in the angular state variable. In the resonances of these systems generically appear hyperbolic periodic orbits. We study the possible transversal intersections of their invariant manifolds, which is exponentially small, and we give an asymptotic formula for the measure of the splitting. We see that its asymptotic first order is of the form $K \varepsilon^β \text{e}^{-a/\varepsilon}$ and we identify the constants $K,β,a$ in terms of the syst…
We study the splitting of invariant manifolds of whiskered tori with two or three frequencies in nearly-integrable Hamiltonian systems. We consider 2-dimensional tori with a frequency vector $ω=(1,Ω)$ where $Ω$ is a quadratic irrational number, or 3-dimensional tori with a frequency vector $ω=(1,Ω,Ω^2)$ where $Ω$ is a cubic irrational number. Applying the Poincare-Melnikov method, we find exponentially small asymptotic estimates for the maximal splitting distance between the stable and unstable manifolds associated to the invariant torus, showing that such estimates depend strongly on the arit…
The splitting of invariant manifolds of whiskered (hyperbolic) tori with two frequencies in a nearly-integrable Hamiltonian system, whose hyperbolic part is given by a pendulum, is studied. We consider a torus with a fast frequency vector $ω/\sqrt\varepsilon$, with $ω=(1,Ω)$ where the frequency ratio $Ω$ is a quadratic irrational number. Applying the Poincaré-Melnikov method, we carry out a careful study of the dominant harmonics of the Melnikov potential. This allows us to provide an asymptotic estimate for the maximal splitting distance, and show the existence of transverse homoclinic orbits…
We study particular solutions of the inner equation associated to the splitting of separatrices on generalized standard maps. An exponentially small complete expression for their difference is obtained. We also provide numerical evidence that the inner equation provides quantitative information of the splitting of separatrices even in the case when the limit flow does not.
In this work we study the splitting distance of a rapidly perturbed pendulum $H(x,y,t)=\frac{1}{2}y^2+(\cos(x)-1)+μ(\cos(x)-1)g\left(\frac{t}{\varepsilon}\right)$ with $g(τ)=\sum_{|k|>1}g^{[k]}e^{ikτ}$ a $2π$-periodic function and $μ,\varepsilon \ll 1$. Systems of this kind undergo exponentially small splitting and, when $μ\ll 1$, it is known that the Melnikov function actually gives an asymptotic expression for the splitting function provided $g^{[\pm 1]}\neq 0$. Our study focuses on the case $g^{[\pm 1]}=0$ and it is motivated by two main reasons. On the one hand the general understanding of…
We study the splitting of invariant manifolds of whiskered (hyperbolic) tori with three frequencies in a nearly-integrable Hamiltonian system, whose hyperbolic part is given by a pendulum. We consider a 3-dimensional torus with a fast frequency vector $ω/\sqrt\varepsilon$, with $ω=(1,Ω,\widetildeΩ)$ where $Ω$ is a cubic irrational number whose two conjugates are complex, and the components of $ω$ generate the field $\mathbb Q(Ω)$. A paradigmatic case is the cubic golden vector, given by the (real) number $Ω$ satisfying $Ω^3=1-Ω$, and $\widetildeΩ=Ω^2$. For such 3-dimensional frequency vectors,…
We study billiard dynamics inside an ellipse for which the axes lengths are changed periodically in time and an $O(δ)$-small quartic polynomial deformation is added to the boundary. In this situation the energy of the particle in the billiard is no longer conserved. We show a Fermi acceleration in such system: there exists a billiard trajectory on which the energy tends to infinity. The construction is based on the analysis of dynamics in the phase space near a homoclinic intersection of the stable and unstable manifolds of the normally hyperbolic invariant cylinder $Λ$, parameterised by the e…
The space of degree d single-variable monic and centered complex polynomial vector fields can be decomposed into loci in which the vector fields have the same topological structure. We analyze the geometric structure of these loci and describe some bifurcations, in particular, it is proved that new homoclinic separatrices can form under small perturbation. By an example, we show that this decomposition of parameter space by combinatorial data is not a cell decomposition. The appendix to this article, joint work with Tan Lei, shows that landing separatrices are stable under small perturbation o…
The connection between discrete and continuous dynamical systems through the unit-time map has shown a significant role in bifurcation theory. Recently, it has also been used in fractal analysis of bifurcations. We study fractal properties of the unit-time map near nilpotent nonmonodromic singularities of planar vector fields using normal forms. We are interested in nilpotent singularities because they are nonhyperbolic, and we know that near nonhyperbolic singularities the box dimension is nontrivial. We study discrete orbits generated by the unit-time map, on the separatrices at the bifurcat…
We study the number of limit cycles and the bifurcation diagram in the Poincaré sphere of a one-parameter family of planar differential equations of degree five $\dot {\bf x}=X_b({\bf x})$ which has been already considered in previous papers. We prove that there is a value $b^*>0$ such that the limit cycle exists only when $b\in(0,b^*)$ and that it is unique and hyperbolic by using a rational Dulac function. Moreover we provide an interval of length 27/1000 where $b^*$ lies. As far as we know the tools used to determine this interval are new and are based on the construction of algebraic curve…
Planar quadratic differential systems occur in many areas of applied mathematics. Although more than one thousand papers have been written on these systems, a complete understanding of this family is still missing. Classical problems, and in particular, Hilbert's 16th problem, are still open for this family. In this article we make a global study of the family QTN of all real quadratic polynomial differential systems which have a semi-elemental triple node (triple node with exactly one zero eigenvalue). This family modulo the action of the affine group and time homotheties is three-dimensional…
We discuss the splitting of a separatrix in a generic unfolding of a degenerate equilibrium in a Hamiltonian system with two degrees of freedom. We assume that the unperturbed fixed point has two purely imaginary eigenvalues and a double zero one. It is well known that an one-parametric unfolding of the corresponding Hamiltonian can be described by an integrable normal form. The normal form has a normally elliptic invariant manifold of dimension two. On this manifold, the truncated normal form has a separatrix loop. This loop shrinks to a point when the unfolding parameter vanishes. Unlike the…
We consider the problem of Arnold's diffusion for nearly integrable isochronous Hamiltonian systems. We prove a shadowing theorem which improves the known estimates for the diffusion time. We also develop a new method for measuring the splitting of the separatrices. As an application we justify, for three time scales systems, that the splitting is correctly predicted by the Poincaré-Melnikov function.
Collision of equilibria with a splitting manifold has been locally studied, but might also be a contributing factor to global bifurcations. In particular a boundary collision can be coincident with collision of a virtual equilibrium with a periodic orbit, giving an analogue to a homoclinic bifurcation. This type of bifurcation is demonstrated in a nonsmooth climate application. Here we describe the nonsmooth bifurcation structure, as well as the smooth bifurcation structure for which the nonsmooth homoclinic bifurcation is a limiting case.
The understanding and prediction of sudden changes in flow patterns is of paramount importance in the analysis of geophysical flows as these rare events relate to critical phenomena such as atmospheric blocking, the weakening of the Gulf stream, or the splitting of the polar vortex. In this work our aim is to develop first steps towards a theoretical understanding of vortex splitting phenomena. To this end, we study bifurcations of global flow patterns in parameter-dependent two-dimensional incompressible flows, with the flow patterns of interest corresponding to specific invariant sets. Under…
This is the first part of a series devoting to the generalizations and applications of common theorems in variational bifurcation theory. Using parameterized versions of splitting theorems in Morse theory we generalize some famous bifurcation theorems for potential operators by weakening standard assumptions on the differentiability of the involved functionals, which opens up a way of bifurcation studies for quasi-linear elliptic boundary value problems.
We introduce a new measure of instability of area-preserving twist diffeomorphisms, which generalizes the notions of angle of splitting of separatrices, and flux through a gap of a Cantori. As an example of application, we establish a sharp >0 lower bound on the topological entropy in a neighbourhood of a hyperbolic, unique action-minimizing fixed point, assuming only no topological obstruction to diffusion, i.e. no homotopically non-trivial invariant circle consisting of orbits with the rotation number 0. The proof is based on a new method of precise construction of positive entropy invariant…
Consider a symplectic map which possesses a normally hyperbolic invariant manifold of any even dimension with transverse homoclinic channels. We develop a topological shadowing argument to prove the existence of Arnold diffusion along the invariant manifold, shadowing some iterations of the inner dynamics carried by the invariant manifold and the outer dynamics induced by the stable and unstable foliations. In doing so, we generalise an idea of Gidea and de la Llave in [26], based on the method of correctly aligned windows and a so-called transversality-torsion argument. Our proof permits that…
Recent works related to Palis conjecture of J. Yang, S. Crovisier, M. Sambarino and D. Yang showed that any aperiodic class of a $C^1$-generic diffeomorphism far away from homoclinic bifurcations (or homoclinic tangencies) is partially hyperbolic. We show in this paper that, generically, a non-trivial dominated splitting implies partial hyperbolicity for an aperiodic class if it is Lyapunov stable. More precisely, for $C^1$-generic diffeomorphisms, if a Lyapunov stable aperiodic class has a non-trivial dominated splitting $E\oplus F$, then one of the two bundles is hyperbolic (either $E$ is co…
We propose a model for local dynamics of a perturbed convex real-analytic Liouville-integrable Hamiltonian system near a resonance of multiplicity $1+m, m\geq 0$. Physically, the model represents a toroidal pendulum, coupled with a Liouville-integrable system of $n$ non-linear rotators via a small analytic potential. The global bifurcation problem is set-up for the $n$-dimensional isotropic manifold, corresponding to a specific homoclinic orbit of the toroidal pendulum. The splitting of this manifold can be described by a scalar function on an $n$-torus, whose $k$th Fourier coefficient satisfi…
In this paper, we explore the three-dimensional chaotic set near a homoclinic cycle to a hyperbolic bifocus at which the vector field has negative divergence. If the invariant manifolds of the bifocus satisfy a non-degeneracy condition, a sequence of hyperbolic suspended horseshoes arises near the cycle, with one expanding and two contracting directions. We extend previous results on the field and we show that the first return map to a given cross section may be approximated by a map exhibiting heteroclinic tangencies associated to two periodic orbits. When the cycle is broken, under an additi…
