In this work, we present the formation and characterization of a quaternary (pseudo ternary) icosahedral quasicrystal in Al65Ga5Pd17Mn13 alloy. The X ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy confirmed the formation of icosahedral B2 type and O crystalline (orthorhombic structure) phases in as cast alloy. The icosahedral phase gets formed after annealing at 800 C for 60 hours. The formation of icosahedral phase in AlGaPdMn quaternary alloy by present technique has been studied for the first time. The Energy dispersive X-ray analysis investigations suggest the presence of Ga (5 at) in the alloy. It is interesting to note that pseudo twelve fold pattern in the as cast alloy has been observed. Icosahedral AlGaPdMn provides a new opportunity to investigate the various characteristics including surface characteristics. Attempts will be made to discuss the micromechanisms for the formation of quasicrystalline phase in Al-Ga-Pd-Mn alloys.
Aluminium alloy AA7075 (Al-Zn-Mg-Cu) specimens were prepared using selective laser melting, also known as powder bed fusion additive manufacturing. In the as-manufactured state, which represents a locally rapidly solidified condition, the prevalence of a previously unreported icosahedral quasicrystal with 5-fold symmetry was observed. The icosahedral quasicrystal, which has been termed nu-phase, was comprised of Zn, Cu and Mg.
Although the existence of 13-atom icosahedral clusters in one-component close-packed undercooled liquids was predicted more than half a century ago by Frank, the existence of such icosahedral clusters is less clear in liquid alloys. We study the lowest-energy structures of 13-atom AxB13-x Lennard-Jones binary clusters using the modified space-fixed genetic algorithm and the artificial Lennard-Jones potential designed by Kob and Andersen. Curiously, the lowest-energy structures are non-icosahedral for almost all compositions. The role played by the icosahedral cluster in a binary glass is quest…
The structural properties of the simulated $\rm Cu_αZr_{1-α}$ glassy alloys are studied in the wide range of the copper concentration $α$ to clarify the impact of the composition on the number density of the icosahedral clusters. Both bond orientational order parameters and Voronoi tessellation methods are used to identify these clusters. Our analysis shows that abundance of the icosahedral clusters and the chemical composition of these clusters are essentially non monotonic versus $α$ and demonstrate local extrema. That qualitatively explains the existence of pinpoint compositions of high gla…
In a narrow composition range centered at Zn74.5Au10.5Yb15.0, Tsai-type icosahedral quasicrystal is formed in alloys quenched from 880 C. This quasicrystal belongs to the primitive type with the 6-dimensional lattice parameter a6D=7.378 A. The quasicrystal was not formed in the slowly cooled specimen, and was considered a metastable phase. The stable phase is a 2/1 approximant of the lattice parameter a2/1=23.271 A. This approximant forms exclusively in Zn76.0Au9.0Yb15.0 alloy annealed at 530 C. In addition, Zn70.5Au15.5Tb14.0 alloy annealed at 505 C forms a Tsai-type 1/1 approximant (a1/1=14.…
Starting from the Zn17Sc3 cubic approximant, new quasicrystal alloys were searched by replacement of Zn with transition elements, T. In the cases of T=Mn, Fe, Co and Ni, new icosahedral quasicrystals are formed in as-cast alloys as major phases at the alloy compositions of Zn75T10Sc15. All these quasicrystals belong to a primitive type, and have 6-dimensional lattice parameters, a6D, ranging from 7.044 to 7.107 A. They have the valence electron concentrations, e/a, ranging from 2.01 to 2.14, and almost the same ratios between the edge-length of the Penrose tile, aR, and the averaged atomic dia…
Intermetallic precipitates formed in heat-treated and aged Mg-Zn and Mg-Zn-Y alloys have been investigated via electron microscopy. Coarse spheroidal precipitates formed on deformation twin boundaries contained domains belonging to either the MgZn2 hexagonal Laves phase or the monoclinic Mg4Zn7 phase. Both phases are structurally related to the quasi-crystalline phase formed in Mg-Zn-Y alloys, containing icosahedrally coordinated zinc atoms arranged as a series of broad rhombohedral units. This rhombohedral arrangement was also visible in intragranular precipitates where local regions with the…
A P-type icosahedral quasicrystal is formed in Au-Al-Yb alloy of which 6-dimensional lattice parameter a6D = 7.448 Å. The composition of the quasicrystal was analyzed to be Au51Al34Yb15. This quasicrystal is formed in as-cast alloys, and is regarded as metastable because of decomposition into other crystalline phases by annealing at 700 \degree C. Among Tsai-type quasicrystals, this quasicrystal is situated just between Zn-Sc group with smaller a6D and larger Cd-Yb group. Intermediate valence of Yb recently observed in this quasicrystal may be due to this unique situation, namely smaller major…
A local and medium range atomic structure model for the face centred icosahedral (fci) Mg25Y11Zn64 alloy has been established in a sphere of r = 27 A. The model was refined by least squares techniques using the atomic pair distribution (PDF) function obtained from synchrotron powder diffraction. Three hierarchies of the atomic arrangement can be found: (i) five types of local coordination polyhedra for the single atoms, four of which are of Frank-Kasper type. In turn, they (ii) form a three-shell (Bergman) cluster containing 104 atoms, which is condensed sharing its outer shell with its neighb…
Selective laser melting (SLM) is rapidly evolving to become a mainstream technology. However, the fundamental mechanisms of solidification and microstructure development inherent to the non-equilibrium conditions of this additive manufacturing method, which differ largely from those typical of conventional processing techniques, remain widely unknown. In this work, an in-depth characterization of the microstructure of Al7075 SLM processed samples, built from powder mixtures containing ZrH2 microparticles, demonstrates the occurrence of icosahedral quasicrystal-enhanced nucleation during laser …
Structural studies on the icosahedral quasicrystals in Zn-Mg-Sc, Cu-Ga-Mg-Sc, and Zn-Mg-Ti alloys as well as their corresponding 1/1 cubic approximants, have revealed that these quasicrystals belong to a new structural group similar to Cd-based quasicrystals. This group is characterized by a triple-shell icosahedral cluster different from both Mackay- and Bergman-types. The presence of the atomic cluster has been deduced from the structure model of the approximant crystal, Zn17Sc3, in which the clusters are embedded in a periodic network of so-called "glue atoms". Density measurement suggested…
This paper presents a new highly stable periodic approximant to the Al-based F-type icosahedral quasicrystals, i-Al-Pd-TM (TM=transition metals). The structure of this intermetallic Al-Pd-Cr-Fe compound is determined ab initio using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, where the space group is identified to be Pa-3 and the lattice constant 40.5 angstrom. The structure is well described as a dense packing of clusters of two kinds, which are known in the literature as the pseudo-Mackay type and the Bergman type clusters. The clusters are centered at the vertices of a canonical cell tiling, in which…
Binary Cu-Zr system is a representative bulk glassformer demonstrating high glass forming ability due to pronounced icosahedral local ordering. From the first glance, Ni-Zr system is the most natural object to expect the same behavior because nickel and copper are neighbours in the periodic table and have similar physicochemical properties. However, doing molecular dynamics simulations of $\rm Ni_αZr_{1-α}$ alloys described by embedded atom model potential, we observe different behaviour. We conclude that the Ni-Zr system has the same glass-forming ability as an additive binary Lennard-Jones m…
Icosahedral quasicrystals spontaneously form from the melt in simulations of Al--Cu--Fe alloys. We model the interatomic interactions using oscillating pair potentials tuned to the specific alloy system based on a database of density functional theory (DFT)-derived energies and forces. Favored interatomic separations align with the geometry of icosahedral motifs that overlap to create face-centered icosahedral order on a hierarchy of length scales. Molecular dynamics simulations, supplemented with Monte Carlo steps to swap chemical species, efficiently sample the configuration space of our mod…
We report the discovery of a new binary icosahedral phase in a Sc-Zn alloy obtained through solution-growth, producing millimeter-sized, facetted, single grain, quasicrystals that exhibit different growth morphologies, pentagonal dodecahedra and rhombic triacontahedra, under only marginally different growth conditions. These two morphologies manifest different degrees of quasicrystalline order, or phason strain. The discovery of i-Sc$_12$Zn$_88$ suggests that a reexamination of binary phase diagrams at compositions close to crystalline approximant structures may reveal other, new binary quasic…
To understand the formation of the Bergman cluster in the F-type icosahedral quasicrystal, crystallographic relations between the quasicrystal and the intermetallic-compound H and Zn$_{23}$Y$_6$ phases in the Zn-Mg-Y alloy system were investigated mainly by transmission electron microscopy. It was found that, although sample rotations of about 1° were required to obtain simple crystallographic relations, the orientation relationship was established among the cubic-$Fm\overline{3}m$ Zn$_{23}$Y$_6$ structure, the hexagonal-$P6_3/mmc$ H structure, and the F-type icosahedral quasicrystal (IQ); tha…
Classical effective potentials are indispensable for any large-scale atomistic simulations, and the relevance of simulation results crucially depends on the quality of the potentials used. For complex alloys like quasicrystals, however, realistic effective potentials are practically inexistent. We report here on our efforts to develop effective potentials especially for quasicrystalline alloy systems. We use the so-called force matching method, in which the potential parameters are adapted so as to optimally reproduce the forces and energies in a set of suitably chosen reference configurations…
This paper reports formation enthalpies of phases in the Al-Mn-Pd ternary alloy system as calculated from first principles using electronic density functional theory. We consider all crystal structures as reported in the assessed phase diagrams of the ternary and its binary alloy subsystems (Al-Mn, Al-Pd, and Mn-Pd), as well as additional reported or hypothetical structures. Icosahedral and decagonal quasicrystalline approximants are among the structures that we predict to be stable, or nearly so. Our results suggest the need for careful experimental reexamination of phase stability in each of…
We investigate the vibrational stability and the electronic structure of the proposed icosahedral fullerene-like cage structure of B80 [Szwacki, Sadrzadeh, and Yakobson, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 98}, 166804 (2007)] by an all electron density functional theory using polarized Gaussian basis functions containing 41 basis functions per atom. The vibrational analysis of B$_{80}$ indicates that the icosahedral structure is vibrationally unstable with 7 imaginary frequencies. The equilibrium structure has $T_h$ symmetry and a {\em smaller} gap of 0.96 eV between the highest occupied and lowest unoccupi…
Understanding the mechanisms which relate properties of liquid and solid phases is crucial for fabricating new advanced solid materials, such as glasses, quasicrystals and high-entropy alloys. Here we address this issue for quasicrystal-forming Al-Cu-Fe alloys which can serve as a model for studying microscopic mechanisms of quasicrystal formation. We study experimentally two structural-sensitive properties of the liquid -- viscosity and undercoolability -- and compare results with \textit{ab initio} investigations of short-range order (SRO). We observe that SRO in Al-Cu-Fe melts is polytetrah…

Prediction of the glass forming ability (GFA) of alloys remains a major challenge. We are not able to predict the composition dependence of the GFA of even binary alloys. To investigate the effect of each element's propensity to form particular crystal structures on glass formation, we focus on binary alloys composed of elements with the same size, but different atomic symmetries using the patchy-particle model. For mixtures with atomic symmetries that promote different crystal structures, the minimum critical cooling rate $R_c$ is only a factor of $5$ lower than that for the pure substances. …
We investigate the binding surface along the Bain path and phonon dispersion relations for the cubic phase of the ferromagnetic binary alloys Fe3X (X = Ni, Pd, Pt) for L12 and DO22 ordered phases from first principles by means of density functional theory. The phonon dispersion relations exhibit a softening of the transverse acoustic mode at the M-point in the L12-phase in accordance with experiments for ordered Fe3Pt. This instability can be associated with a rotational movement of the Fe-atoms around the Ni-group element in the neighboring layers and is accompanied by an extensive reconstruc…
The origin of the phase stability of 18$R$ Mg-Zn-Y alloys with a long-period stacking order (LPSO) is studied using first-principles calculations. We calculate the heat of formation as a function of the number of Zn vacancies to discuss the role of Zn atoms. The calculated convex hull indicates that the Zn atoms in the LPSO alloys are stable even if they number about half of the Y atoms. The bonding state with Zn $p$ orbitals leads to the stability of the LPSO structure because the partial density of states of Mg nearest to the solute cluster forms a valley structure.
Building on the recent discovery of tough nanocrystalline Cu-Zr alloys with amorphous intergranular films, this paper investigates ternary nanocrystalline Cu-Zr-Hf alloys with a focus on understanding how alloy composition affects the formation of disordered complexions. Binary Cu-Zr and Cu-Hf alloys with similar initial grain sizes were also fabricated for comparison. The thermal stability of the nanocrystalline alloys was evaluated by annealing at 950 °C (>95% of the solidus temperatures), followed by detailed characterization of the grain boundary structure. All of the ternary alloys exhibi…
Bulk metallic glass forms when liquid metal alloys solidify without crystalization. In the search for Iron-based bulk glass-forming alloys of the metal-metalloid type (Fe-B- and Fe-C-based), crystals based on the structural prototype C6Cr23 often preempt the amorphous phase. Destabilizing this competing crystal structure could enhance glass-formability. We carry out first-principles total energy calculations of enthalpy of formation to identify third elements that can effectively destabilize C6Cr23. Yttrium appears optimal among transition metals, and rare earths also are suitable. Atomic size…
Practical applications of nanocrystalline metallic thin films are often limited by instabilities. In addition to grain growth, the thin film itself can become unstable and collapse into islands through solid-state dewetting. Selective alloying can improve nanocrystalline stability, but the impact of this approach on dewetting is not clear. In this study, two alloys that exhibit nanocrystalline thermal stability as ball milled powders are evaluated as thin films. While both alloys demonstrated dewetting behavior following annealing, the severity decreased in more dilute compositions. Ultimately…
We have used density functional theory to study the structural stability of surface alloys. Our systems consist of a single pseudomorphic layer of $M_xN_{1-x}$ on the Ru(0001) surface, where $M$ = Fe or Co, and $N$ = Pt, Au, Ag, Cd, or Pb. Several of the combinations studied by us display a preference for atomically mixed configurations over phase-segregated forms. We have also performed further {\it ab initio} calculations to obtain the parameters describing the elastic interactions between atoms in the alloy layer, including the effective atomic sizes at the surface. We find that while elast…
The phase stability of fcc and bcc magnetic binary Fe-Cr, Fe-Ni, Cr-Ni alloys and ternary Fe-Cr-Ni alloys is investigated using a combination of density functional theory (DFT), Cluster Expansion (CE) and Magnetic Cluster Expansion (MCE). Energies, magnetic moments, and volumes of more than 500 alloy structures are evaluated using DFT, and the most stable magnetic configurations are compared with experimental data. Deviations from the Vegard law in fcc Fe-Cr-Ni alloys, associated with non-linear variation of atomic magnetic moments as functions of alloy composition, are observed. Accuracy of t…
We resolve issues that have plagued reliable prediction of relative phase stability for solid-solutions and compounds. Due to its commercially important phase diagram, we showcase Al-Li system because historically density-functional theory (DFT) results show large scatter and limited success in predicting the structural properties and stability of solid-solutions relative to ordered compounds. Using recent advances in an optimal basis-set representation of the topology of electronic charge density (and, hence, atomic size), we present DFT results that agree reasonably well with all known exper…
Mn doping in dilute III-V alloys has been examined as a route to enhance ferromagnetic stability. Strong valence band bowing is expected at the dilute limit, implying a strong modification of the ferromagnetic stability upon alloying, with even an increase in some cases. Using first principle electronic structure calculations we show that while codoping with a group V anion enhances the ferromagnetic stability in some cases when the effects of relaxation of the lattice are not considered, strong impurity scattering in the relaxed structure result in a reduction of the ferromagnetic stability.
In order to clarify thermodynamic stability of Mg-based long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) structure, we systematically study energetic preference for alloys on multiple stacking with different composition for random mixing of constituent elements, Mg, Y, and Zn based on special quasirandom structure (SQS). Through calculation of formation free energy of SQS, Mg-Y-Zn alloy exhibits phase separation into Mg- and Y-Zn rich phase, which is consistent with previous theoretical studies. Bulk modulus of SQSs for multiple compositions, stacking sequences, and atomic configuratons ranges around 35 GP…
The icosahedral (i-) AlPdRe is the most resistive quasicrystalline alloy discovered so far. Resistivities ($ρ$) of $1Ωcm$ at 4K and correlated resistance ratios ($RRR = ρ_{4K}/ρ_{300K}$) of more than 200 are observed in polycrystalline samples. These values are two orders of magnitude larger than for the isomorphous i-AlPdMn phase. We discuss here the controversial microscopic origin of the i-AlPdRe alloy electrical specificity. It has been proposed that the high resistivity values are due to extrinsic parameters, such as secondary phases or oxygen contamination. From comprehensive measurement…
We have studied the problem of phase stability in Fe-Pt and Co-Pt alloy systems. We have used the orbital peeling technique in the conjunction of augmented space recursion based on the tight binding linear orbital method as the method for the calculation of pair interaction energies. In particular, we have generalized our earlier technique to take into account of magnetic effects for the cases where the magnetic transition is higher than the order disorder chemical transition temperature as in the case of Co$_3$Pt. Our theoretical results obtained within this framework successfully reproduce t…
For (CoCrFeMn)$_{100-x}$Al$_{x}$ high-entropy alloys, we investigate the phase evolution with increasing Al-content (0 $\le$ x $\le$ 20 at.%). From first-principles theory, the Al-doping drives the alloy structurally from FCC to BCC separated by a narrow two-phase region (FCC+BCC), which is well supported by our experiments. We highlight the effect of Al-doping on the formation enthalpy and electronic structure of (CoCrFeMn)$_{100-x}$Al$_{x}$ alloys. As chemical short-range order (SRO) in multicomponent alloys indicates the nascent local order (and entropy changes), as well as expected low-tem…
High entropy alloys (HEAs) are multicomponent compounds whose high configurational entropy allows them to solidify into a single phase, with a simple crystal lattice structure. Some HEA's exhibit desirable properties, such as high specific strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance, while challenging the scientist to make confident predictions in the face of multiple competing phases. We demonstrate phase stability in the multicomponent alloy system of Cr-Mo-Nb-V, for which some of its binary subsystems are subject to phase separation and complex intermetallic-phase formation. Our first-pri…
A novel y-y'-y" dual-superlattice superalloy, with promising mechanical properties up to elevated temperatures was recently reported. The present work employs state of the art chemical and spatial characterization techniques to study the effect systematic additions of Mo, W and Fe and variations in Nb and Al contents have on the phase fraction, thermal stability, elemental partitioning and mechanical properties. Alloys were produced through arc melting followed by heat treatment. Multi-scale characterization techniques and hardness testing were employed to characterize their microstructure, th…
Laves phases often form as secondary phases in metallic alloys and have a significant effect on their structural properties. Thus, phase stability studies for these chemically and structurally complex phases in addition to mechanical behavior studies are of great interest. In this work, we use the concept of metastable bulk phase and defect phase diagrams to augment the understanding of the bulk phase and defect phase stability in Laves phases in Mg-based alloys. In this way, we resolve the discrepancy between bulk phase diagrams and experimental observations regarding the formation of Mg-rich…
The elastic energy of mixing for multi-component solid solutions is derived by generalizing Eshelby's sphere-in-hole model for binary alloys. By surveying the dependence of the elastic energy on chemical composition and lattice misfit, we propose a lattice strain coefficient λ*. Applying to several high-entropy alloys and superalloys, we found that most solid solution alloys are stable when λ*<0.16, analogous to the Hume-Rothery atomic-size rule for binary alloys. We also reveal that the polydispersity index δ, frequently used for describing strain in multi-component alloys, is directly relate…
We show the differences in the stability of 3d-5d (NiPt and CuAu) and 3d-4d (NiPd and CuAg) alloys arise mainly due to relativistic corrections. The magnetic properties of disordered NiPd and NiPt alloys also differ due to these corrections which lead to increase in the separation between s-d bands of 5d elements in these alloys. For the magnetic case we analyze the results in terms of splitting of majority and minority spin d-band centers of the 3d elements. We further examine the effect of relativistic corrections to the pair energies and order disorder transition temperatures in these alloy…
The influence of geometry on the local and global packing of particles is important to many fundamental and applied research themes such as the structure and stability of liquids, crystals and glasses. Here, we show by experiments and simulations that a binary mixture of hard-sphere-like particles crystallizing into the MgZn2 Laves phase in bulk, spontaneously forms 3D icosahedral quasicrystals in slowly drying droplets. Moreover, the local symmetry of 70-80% of the particles changes to that of the MgCu2 Laves phase. Both of these findings are significant for photonic applications. If the stoi…
High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) contain near equimolar amounts of five or more elements and are a compelling space for materials design. Great emphasis is placed on identifying HEAs that form a homogeneous solid-solution, but the design of such HEAs is hindered by the difficulty of navigating stability relationships in high-component spaces. Traditional phase diagrams use barycentric coordinates to represent composition axes, which require D = (N - 1) spatial dimensions to represent an N-component system, meaning that HEA systems with N > 4 components cannot be readily visualized. Here, we propose …
We report on the various types of Peierls like two dimensional structural modulations and relative phase stability of 2H and 1T poly-types in MoS2-ReS2 and WS2-ReS2 alloy system. Theoretical calculation predicts a polytype phase transition cross over at ~50 at.% of Mo and W in ReS2 in both monolayer and bulk form, respectively. Experimentally, two different types of structural modulations at 50% and a modulation corresponding to trimerization at 75% alloy composition is observed for MoS2-ReS2 and only one type of modulation is observed at 50% WS2-ReS2 alloy system. The 50% alloy system is foun…
In this work we present an experimental study of structure and phase stability in ternary Cu-Sn-In alloys around 55 at.% Cu in the temperature range 100^{\circ}C < T < 550^{\circ}C. We have followed in real-time the sequence of phase transformations in succesive heating and cooling ramps, using state-of-the-art neutron powder thermodiffractometry. These experiments were complemented with calorimetric studies of the same alloys. Our results give experimental support to the current assessment of the ternary phase diagram in this composition and temperature range, yielding the sequence of transit…
The ability to predict the composition- and temperature-dependent stability of refractory complex concentrated alloys (RCCAs) is vital to the design of high-temperature structural alloys. Here, we present a model based on first-principles calculations to predict the thermodynamic stability of multicomponent equimolar solid solutions in a high-throughput manner and apply it to screen over 20,000 compositions. We develop a database that contains pairwise mixing enthalpy of 17 refractory metals using density-functional theory (DFT)-based total energy calculations. To these, we fit thermodynamic s…
Two different precipitate hardening aluminium alloys processed by friction stir welding were investigated. The microstructure and the hardness of the as delivered materials were compared to that of the weld nugget. Transmission electron microscopy observations combined with three-dimensional atom probe analyses clearly show that β;" precipitates dissolved in the nugget of the Al-Mg-Si giving rise to some supersaturated solid solution. It is shown that the dramatic softening of the weld could be partly recovered by post-welding ageing treatments. In the Al-Mg-Sc alloy, Al3Sc precipitate size an…
We use high-throughput first-principles sampling to investigate competitive factors that determine the crystal structure of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) and the energetics dependence of the stable phase on the atomic configuration of fully ordered L1$_2$, D0$_{22}$, and random solid solution (RSS) phases of equiatomic quaternary alloys comprising four of the six constituent elements (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu). Considering the configurational entropy, we demonstrate that valence electron concentration (VEC) and temperature are crucial to determine the phase stability of HEAs at finite temperatu…
