We have used density functional theory to study the structural stability of surface alloys. Our systems consist of a single pseudomorphic layer of $M_xN_{1-x}$ on the Ru(0001) surface, where $M$ = Fe or Co, and $N$ = Pt, Au, Ag, Cd, or Pb. Several of the combinations studied by us display a preference for atomically mixed configurations over phase-segregated forms. We have also performed further {\it ab initio} calculations to obtain the parameters describing the elastic interactions between atoms in the alloy layer, including the effective atomic sizes at the surface. We find that while elastic interactions favor alloying for all the systems considered by us, in some cases chemical interactions disfavor atomic mixing. We show that a simple criterion (analogous to the Hume-Rothery first law for bulk alloys) need not necessarily work for strain-stabilized surface alloys, because of the presence of additional elastic contributions to the alloy heat of formation, that will tend to oppose phase segregation.
The precipitate shape, size and distribution are crucial factors which determine the properties of several technologically important alloys. Elastic interactions between the inclusions modify their morphology and align them along elastically favourable crystallographic directions. Among the several factors contributing to the elastic interaction energy between precipitating phases, anisotropy in elastic moduli is decisive in the emergence of modulated structures during phase separation in elastically coherent alloy systems. We employ a phase-field model incorporating elastic interaction energy…
In this work we present a detailed computational study of structural and elastic properties of cubic AlGaInN alloys in the framework of Keating valence force field model, for which we perform accurate parametrization based on state of the art DFT calculations. When analyzing structural properties, we focus on concentration dependence of lattice constant, as well as on the distribution of the nearest and the next nearest neighbour distances. Where possible, we compare our results with experiment and calculations performed within other computational schemes. We also present a detailed study of e…
Motivated by interest in the elastic properties of high strength amorphous metals, we examine the elastic properties of select crystalline phases. Using first principles methods, we calculate elastic moduli in various chemical systems containing transition metals, specifically early (Ta,W) and late (Co,Ni). Theoretically predicted alloy elastic properties are verified for Ni-Ta by comparison with experimental measurements using resonant ultrasound spectroscopy. Comparison of our computed elastic moduli with effective medium theories shows that alloying leads to enhancement of bulk moduli relat…
Strong compositional-dependent elastic properties have been observed theoretically and experimentally in Ti$_{1-x}$Al$_x$ N alloys. The elastic constant, C$_{11}$, changes by more than 50% depending on the Al-content. Increasing the Al-content weakens the average bond strength in the local octahedral arrangements resulting in a more compliant material. On the other hand, it enhances the directional (covalent) nature of the nearest neighbor bonds that results in greater elastic anisotropy and higher sound velocities. The strong dependence of the elastic properties on the Al-content offers new i…
We report on measurements of the adiabatic second order elastic constants of the off-stoichiometric Ni$_{54}$Mn$_{23}$Al$_{23}$ single crystalline Heusler alloy. The variation in the temperature dependence of the elastic constants has been investigated across the magnetic transition and over a broad temperature range. Anomalies in the temperature behaviour of the elastic constants have been found in the vicinity of the magnetic phase transition. Measurements under applied magnetic field, both isothermal and variable temperature, show that the value of the elastic constants depends on magnetic …
Conventional crystalline alloys usually possess a low atomic size difference in order to stabilize its crystalline structure. However, in this article, we report a single phase chemically complex alloy which possesses a large atomic size misfit usually unaffordable to conventional alloys. Consequently, this alloy develops a rather complex atomic-scale chemical order and a highly distorted crystalline structure. As a result, this crystalline alloy displays an unusually high elastic strain limit (~2%), about ten times of that of conventional alloys, and an extremely low internal friction (< 2E-4…
We combined descriptor-based analytical models for stiffness-matrix and elastic-moduli with mean-field methods to accelerate assessment of technologically useful properties of high-entropy alloys, such as strength and ductility. Model training for elastic properties uses Sure-Independence Screening (SIS) and Sparsifying Operator (SO) method yielding an optimal analytical model, constructed with meaningful atomic features to predict target properties. Computationally inexpensive analytical descriptors were trained using a database of the elastic properties determined from density functional the…
The martensitic start temperature ($M_{\text{s}}$) is a technologically fundamental characteristic of high-temperature shape memory alloys. We have recently shown [Phys. Rev. B 94, 224104 (2016)] that the two key features in describing the composition dependence of $M_\text{s}$ are the $T=0$ K phase stability and the difference in vibrational entropy which, within the Debye model, is directly linked to the elastic properties. Here, we use density functional theory together with special quasi-random structures to study the elastic properties of disordered martensite and austenite Ti-Ta alloys a…
Some issues that arise when modeling elastic energy for binary alloys are discussed within the context of a Keating model and density functional calculations. The Keating model is based on atomistic modeling of elastic interactions in binary alloy using harmonic springs with species dependent equilibrium lengths. It is demonstrated that the continuum limit for the strain field are the usual equations of linear elasticity for alloys and that they correctly capture the coarse-grained displacement field. In addition, it is established that Euler-Lagrange equation of the continuum limit of the ela…
The cyclic deformation behavior of extruded Mg-8.5wt.%Al alloy with a conventional extrusion texture and a modified texture is systematically investigated by in-situ neutron diffraction and elastic viscoplastic self-consistent (EVPSC) modeling incorporating a twinning/de-twinning (TDT) scheme. The role of twinning and de-twinning on the deformation behavior of Mg-8.5wt.% Al alloy is investigated in terms of the macroscopic stress-strain response, the evolution of the activities of various deformation mechanisms, the texture evolution, the evolution of the internal elastic strains, and the evol…
Deviations from randomicity in In(x)Ga(1-x) As semiconductor alloys induced by elastic effects are investigated within the Keating potential. Our model is based on Monte Carlo simulations on large (4096 atoms) supercells, performed with two types of boundary conditions: Fully periodic boundary conditions represent the bulk, while periodic boundary conditions along the x and y directions and a free surface in the z direction simulate the epitaxial growth environment. We show that In-In correlations identified in the bulk tend to be enhanced in the epitaxially grown samples.
In this paper, we analyze the dependence of elastic constants c_ij on composition for random wurtzite quater- nary AlGayInN alloy in the whole concentration range. The study takes as its starting point the c_ij parameters for zinc blende phase calculated earlier by the authors on the basis of valence force field model. To obtain the wurtzite constants from cubic material parameters the Martin transformation is used. The de- viations from linear Vegard-like dependence of c_ij on composition are analyzed and accurate quadratic fits to calculated moduli are presented. The influence of nonlinear i…
tructural transformation, pressure dependent elasticity behaviors, phonon, and thermodynamic properties of the equiatomic TiZr alloy are investigated by using first-principles density-functional theory. Our calculated lattice parameters and equation of state for $α$ and $ω$ phases as well as the phase transition sequence of $α$$\mathtt{\rightarrow}$$ω$$\mathtt{\rightarrow}$$β$ are consistent well with experiments. Elastic constants of $α$ and $ω$ phases indicate that they are mechanically stable. For cubic $β$ phase, however, it is mechanically unstable at zero pressure and the critical pressu…
Point defects in body-centred cubic Fe, Cr and concentrated random magnetic Fe-Cr are investigated using density functional theory and theory of elasticity. The volume of a substitutional Cr atom in ferromagnetic bcc Fe is approximately 18\% larger than the volume of a host Fe atom, whereas the volume of a substitutional Fe atom in antiferromagnetic bcc Cr is 5\% smaller than the volume of a host Cr atom. Elastic dipole $\boldsymbol{P}$ and relaxation volume $\boldsymbolΩ$ tensors of vacancies and self-interstitial atom (SIA) defects exhibit large fluctuations, with vacancies having negative a…
Si$_{y}$Ge$_{1-x-y}$(C,Sn,Pb)$_{x}$ alloys have attracted significant attention as a route to achieve a direct-gap group-IV semiconductor. Using density functional theory (DFT) - employing local density approximation and hybrid Heyd-Scuzeria-Ernzerhof exchange-correlation functionals - we compute the lattice parameters, relaxed and inner elastic constants, and internal strain (Kleinman) parameters for elemental (diamond) group-IV materials and zinc blende IV-IV compounds. Our DFT calculations support a little-known experimental re-evaluation of the $α$-Sn elastic constants, and contradict a re…
The elastic energy of mixing for multi-component solid solutions is derived by generalizing Eshelby's sphere-in-hole model for binary alloys. By surveying the dependence of the elastic energy on chemical composition and lattice misfit, we propose a lattice strain coefficient λ*. Applying to several high-entropy alloys and superalloys, we found that most solid solution alloys are stable when λ*<0.16, analogous to the Hume-Rothery atomic-size rule for binary alloys. We also reveal that the polydispersity index δ, frequently used for describing strain in multi-component alloys, is directly relate…
Refractory high entropy alloys containing elements from the Ti, V and Cr columns of the periodic table form body centered cubic (BCC) structures. Elements from the Ti column are noteworthy because they take the BCC structure at high temperature but undergo a shear instability and transform to the hexagonal (HCP) structure at low temperature. We show that the instability of these elements impacts the properties of the HEAs that contain them. In particular, the shear moduli are greatly reduced, causing increased dynamic contributions to lattice distortion. Relatively large size differences betwe…
The pressure-induced phase transition, elasticity behavior, thermodynamic properties, and $P\mathtt{-}T$ phase diagram of $α$, $ω$, and $β$ equiatomic HfTi alloy are investigated using first-principles density-functional theory (DFT). The simulated pressure-induced phase transition of the alloy follows the sequence of $α\mathtt{\rightarrow}ω\mathtt{\rightarrow}β$, in agreement with the experimental results of Hf and Ti metals. Our calculated elastic constants show that the $α$ and $ω$ phases are mechanically stable at ambient pressure, while the $β$ phase is unstable, where a critical pressure…
We report the synthesis of a bulk nanostructured alloy using the laser-powder bed fusion process. The equiatomic AlCoCrFeMnNi chemically complex alloy forms a nanoscale modulated structure, which is homogeneously distributed in the as-built condition. The nanostructure consisted of Al & Ni-rich ordered (B2) and Cr & Fe-rich disordered (A2) BCC phases. The two phases form an interconnected phase-network with coherent interface boundaries. Atom-probe-tomography and aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy analysis of the spatial distribution of the modulated structure sugge…
Most of the commercially important alloys are multicomponent, producing multiphase microstructures as a result of processing. When the coexisting phases are elastically coherent, the elastic interactions between these phases play a major role in the development of microstructures. To elucidate the key effects of elastic stress on microstructural evolution when more than two misfitting phases are present in the microstructure, we have developed a microelastic phase-field model in two dimensions to study phase separation in ternary alloy system. Numerical solutions of a set of coupled Cahn-Hilli…

The effect of elastic strain on catalytic activity of platinum (Pt) towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is investigated through de-alloyed Pt-Cu thin films; stress evolution in the de-alloyed layer and the mass of the Cu removed are measured in real-time during electrochemical de-alloying of (111)-textured thin-film PtCu (1:1, atom %) electrodes. In situ stress measurements are made using the cantilever-deflection method and nano-gravimetric measurements are made using an electrochemical quartz crystal nanobalance. Upon de-alloying via successive voltammetric sweeps between -0.05 and 1.15 …
We report on a study of (001) oriented fcc Fe-Ni alloy surfaces which combines first-principles calculations and low-temperature STM experiments. Density functional theory calculations show that Fe-Ni alloy surfaces are buckled with the Fe atoms slightly shifted outwards and the Ni atoms inwards. This is consistent with the observation that the atoms in the surface layer can be chemically distinguished in the STM image: brighter spots (corrugation maxima with increased apparent height) indicate iron atoms, darker ones nickel atoms. This chemical contrast reveals a c2x2 chemical order (50% Fe) …
A series of structural polytypes formed in an Mg-1at.%Zn-2at.%Y alloy has been identified, which are reasonably viewed as long-period stacking derivatives of the hcp Mg structure with alternate AB stacking of the close-packed atomic layers. Atomic-resolution Z-contrast imaging clearly revealed that the structures are long-period chemical-ordered as well as stacking-ordered; unique chemical order along the stacking direction occurs as being synchronized with a local faulted stacking of AB'C'A, where B' and C' layers are commonly enriched by Zn/Y atoms.
High-entropy alloys (HEAs) such as CrMnFeCoNi exhibit unconventional mechanical properties due to their compositional disorder. However, it remains a formidable challenge to estimate the local chemical-environment and magnetic effects of HEAs. Herein we identify the state-associated cohesive energy and band filling originated from the tight-binding and Friedel models as descriptors to quantify the site-to-site chemical bonding and magnetic moments of HEAs. We find that the s-state cohesive energy is indispensable in determining the bonding-strength trend of CrMnFeCoNi that differs from the bon…
Iron-chromium forms the basis of most of the stainless steel grades in the markets. Recently new insights into the physical and chemical properties of Fe-Cr based alloys have been obtained. Some of the new results are quite unexpected and call for further investigations. The present study addresses the magnetic contribution in the atomic driving forces behind the chemical composition in Fe-Cr alloyed with Al, Ti, V, Mn, Co, Ni, and Mo. Using the ab initio exact muffin-tin orbitals method and an Ising-type spin model, it is found that the magnetic moment of the solute atom combined with the ind…

The influence of the phase and structural state on the low-temperature elastic properties of molybdenum-alloyed non-equiatomic high-entropy alloys of the Fe-Co-Ni-Cr system
The structural and elastic properties as well as phonon-dispersion relations of the Heusler-type alloys Fe$_2$VAl and Fe$_2$VGa are computed using density-functional and density-functional perturbation theory within the generalized-gradient approximation. The calculated equilibrium lattice constants agree well with the experimental values. The elastic constants of Fe$_2$VAl and Fe$_2$VGa are predicted for the first time. From the elastic constants the shear modulus, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, sound velocities and Debye temperatures are obtained. By analyzing the ratio between the bulk a…
The current work reports on the elastic shear moduli, internal friction, and the specific heat of the B2 cubic ordered alloy AuZn as a function of temperature. Measurements were made on single-crystal and polycrystalline samples using Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy (RUS), semi-adiabatic calorimetry and stress-strain measurements. Our results confirm that this alloy exhibits the shape-memory effect and a phase transition at 64.75 K that appears to be continuous (second-order) from the specific heat data. It is argued that the combination of equiatomic composition and a low transformation temp…
In a nuclear reactor, the Zr-$x$Nb alloy, which is used as a structural material in the core region, is irradiated by energetic particles that cause the atoms to be displaced from their lattice sites and giving rise to crystal defects. The local changes in the atomic arrangements lead to local deformations of the solid and thereby changes of its local mechanical properties. Understanding the mechanisms behind this evolution in the core region of a reactor, and its monitoring or controlling is a critical task in nuclear industry. In this work, using extensive molecular dynamics simulations, we …
The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in L10 FePd1-xPtx alloy films is studied both experimentally and theoretically. We find that the intrinsic contribution (?sigma^int_AH) to the AHE can be significantly increased whereas the extrinsic side-jump contribution (sigma^?sj_AH) can be continuously reduced from being slightly larger than sigma^?int_AH in L10 FePd to being much smaller than sigma^?int_AH in L10 FePt, by increasing the Pt composition x. We show that this chemical composition tuning of the intrinsic contribution is afforded by the stronger spin-orbit coupling strength on the Pd/Pt site whe…
The electronic, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties of ordered and chemically disordered FeRh alloy is studied using ab-initio methods. The equiatomic Fe$_{50}$Rh$_{50}$ composition is reported for both ordered and disordered phases. Chemically disordered Fe$_x$Rh$_{100-x}$ is reported and the effect of disorder on electronic and magnetic properties is discussed. Further, We have reported the effects of stress and strain in both the order and disorder phases. The result is only for the cubic phase and no distortion has been taken into consideration. This study is motivated by the recent res…
Crystallization represents a fundamental process engendering solidification of a material and determines its microstructure. Driven by complex phenomena at the atomic scale, its understanding for alloys still remains elusive. The present work proposes a large scale molecular dynamics simulation study of the homogeneous crystal nucleation pathways of prototypical undercooled Al-Ni binary alloys. An unsupervised topological learning analysis shows that the nucleation sets in first from a chemical ordering, followed by a bond-orientational ordering of the underlying crystal phase. Our results ind…
We present systematic theoretical investigations to explore the microscopic mechanisms leading to the formation of antiferromagnetism in Ru2MnZ (Z= Sn,Sb,Ge,Si) full Heusler alloys. Our study is based on first-principles calculations of inter-atomic Mn-Mn exchange interactions to set up a suitable Heisenberg spin-model and on subsequent Monte-Carlo simulations of the magnetic properties at finite temperature. The exchange interactions are derived from the paramagnetic state, while a realistic account of long-range chemical disorder is made in the framework of the Coherent Potential Approximati…
First principles calculations were performed to study the structural, elastic, and bonding properties of hcp ZrxTi1-x binary alloy. The special quasi- random structure (SQS) method is employed to mimic the random hcp ZrxTi1-x alloy. It is found that Bulk modulus, B, Young's modulus, E, and shear modulus, G, exhibit decreasing trends as increasing the amount of Zr. A ductile behavior ZrxTi1-x is predicted in the whole composition range. In terms of Mulliken charge analisis, we found that the element Ti behaves much more electronegative than Zr in hcp ZrxTi1-x alloy, and the charge transfer of a…

The recently proposed pair-interaction model is applied to study a series of refractory high entropy alloys. The results demonstrate the simplicity, robustness, and high accuracy of this model in predicting the configuration energies of NbMoTaW, NbMoTaWV and NbMoTaWTi. The element-element pair interaction parameters obtained from the linear regression of first-principle data provide a new perspective to understand the strengthening mechanism in HEAs, as revealed by comparing the effects of adding vanadium and titanium. Using the pair-interaction model, an expression for the intrinsic energy fl…
We study the influence of the liquid-vapor surface on the crystallization kinetics of supercooled metal alloys. While a good glass former, $\rm{Cu}_{50}\rm{Zr}_{50}$, shows no evidence of surface enhancement of crystallization, $\rm{Ni}_{50}\rm{Al}_{50}$ exhibits an increased rate of crystallization due to heterogeneous nucleation at the free liquid surface. The difference in the compositional fluctuations at the interface is proposed as the explanation of the distinction between the two alloys. Specifically, we observe compositional ordering at the surface of $\rm{Ni}_{50}\rm{Al}_{50}$ while …
From electronic-structure-based thermodynamic linear-response, we establish chemical ordering behavior in complex solid solutions versus how Gibbs' space is traversed -- applying it on prototype refractory A2 Ta-Nb-Mo-W high-entropy alloys. Near ideal stoichiometry, this alloy has anomalous, intricate chemical ordering tendencies, with long-ranged chemical interactions that produce competing short-range order (SRO) with a crossover to spinodal segregation. This atypical SRO arises from canonical band behavior that, with alloying, create features near the Fermi-surface (well-defined even with d…
Body-centered cubic (bcc) Fe-Mn systems are known to exhibit a complex and atypical magnetic behaviour from both experiments and 0 K electronic-structure calculations, which is due to the half-filled 3d-band of Mn. We propose effective interaction models for these alloys, which contain both atomic spin and chemical variables. They were parameterized on a set of key density functional theory (DFT) data, with the inclusion of non-collinear magnetic configurations being indispensable. Two distinct approaches, namely a knowledge-driven and a machine-learning approach have been employed for the fit…
In this study we discuss the performance of approximate SQS supercell models in describing the cubic elastic properties of B1 (rocksalt) Ti$_{0.5}$Al$_{0.5}$N alloy by using a symmetry based projection technique. We show on the example of Ti$_{0.5}$Al$_{0.5}$N alloy, that this projection technique can be used to align the differently shaped and sized SQS structures for a comparison in modeling elasticity. Moreover, we focus to accurately determine the cubic elastic constants and Zener's type elastic anisotropy of Ti$_{0.5}$Al$_{0.5}$N. Our best supercell model, that captures accurately both th…
Deformation heterogeneities within microstructures of polycrystalline shape memory alloys (SMAs) during superelastic stressing are studied using both experiments and simulations. In situ X-ray diffraction, specifically the far-field high energy diffraction microscopy (ff-HEDM) technique was used to non-destructively measure the grain-averaged statistics of position, crystal orientation, elastic strain tensor and volume for hundreds of austenite grains in a superelastically loaded nickel-titanium (NiTi) SMA. This experimental data were also used to create a synthetic microstructure within a fin…
