Local chemical order (LCO) is a key descriptor linking composition, atomic arrangement, and function in high-entropy alloys (HEAs), yet remains difficult to quantify. This Perspective highlights how X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) provides element-specific, quantitative insight into LCO in complex alloys. We outline practical considerations for XAS data collection and fitting, including width of spectra range, multi-temperature analysis, and X-ray absorption edge choice for 5d elements. We then highlight a coordination-number-based framework for LCO analysis and use model HEAs to show how single-atom and near-single-atom motifs naturally emerge as component number increases, bridging HEAs and single-atom alloys. Finally, we identify priorities including standardized protocols, uncertainty quantification, expanded operando and time-resolved XAS, and integration with complementary characterization and modelling.
Using the scheme of Delaunay and Gabriel graphs, we analyzed the amorphous structures of computationally created Nd-Fe alloys for several composition ratios based on melt quench simulations with finite temperature first-principles molecular dynamics.By the comparison of the radial distribution functions of the whole system and those derived from the Delaunay and Gabriel graphs, it was shown that the Gabriel graphs represent the first nearest neighbor networks well in the examined amorphous systems. From the Gabriel graph analyses, we examined the coordination structures of amorphous Nd-Fe allo…
In recent years, efficient inter-atomic potentials approaching the accuracy of density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been developed using rigorous atomic descriptors satisfying strict invariances, for example, to translation, rotation, permutation of homonuclear atoms, among others. In this work, we generalize the spectral neighbor analysis potential (SNAP) model to bcc-fcc binary alloy systems. We demonstrate that machine-learned SNAP models can yield significant improvements even over well-established, high-performing embedded atom method (EAM) and modified EAM (MEAM) potentials …
Effect of a quenching medium (water, liquid nitrogen and block of brass) on a short-range ordering in Fe(100-x)Cr(x) (x less than 19) alloys was studied with the Moessbauer spectroscopy. The distribution of Cr atoms was expressed in terms of the Cowley-Warren short-range order (SRO) parameters: alpha1 for the first neighbor-shell, alpha2 for the second neighbor-shell and alpha12 for both neighbor-shells. It was revealed that none of the quenching media resulted in a random distribution of atoms, yet the degree of randomness was the highest for the samples quenched onto the block of brass. The …
The effect of He-ion irradiation on a short-range ordering in model Fe100-xCrx (x=5.8, 10.75, 15.15) was studied by means of conversion electrons Mossbauer spectroscopy. The alloys were irradiated to the dose of 7.5 dpa with ions of 0.25 and 2.0 MeV. The short-range order was expressed in terms of the Warren-Cowley parameters: alpha1 (for the first nearest-neighbor shell), alpha2 (for the second nearest-neighbor shell) and alpha12 (for both shells). For all alloys and both energies a clustering of Cr atoms was revealed, as far as alpha1 and alpha2 are considered, yet its degree was found to be…
First-principles simulations have been performed for [001]-ordered Mn/Ge and Mn/GaAs "digital alloys", focusing on the effects of i) a larger band-gap and ii) a different semiconducting host on the electronic structure of the magnetic semiconductors of interest. Our results for the exchange constants in Mn/Ge, evaluated using a frozen-magnon scheme, show that a larger band-gap tends to give a stronger nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic coupling and an overall enhanced in-plane ferromagnetic coupling even for longer-ranged coupling constants. As for the chemical effects on the exchange constants, w…
Using a first-principles band-structure method and a special quasirandom structure (SQS) approach, we systematically calculate the band gap bowing parameters and \emph{p}-type doping properties of (Zn, Mg, Be)O related random ternary and quaternary alloys. We show that the bowing parameters for ZnBeO and MgBeO alloys are large and dependent on composition. This is due to the size difference and chemical mismatch between Be and Zn(Mg) atoms. We also demonstrate that adding a small amount of Be into MgO reduces the band gap indicating that the bowing parameter is larger than the band-gap differe…
The structural properties of the $Zn_xMg_{1-xS_ySe_{1-y}}$ solid solutions are determined by a combination of the computational alchemy and the cluster expansion methods with Monte Carlo simulations. We determine the phase diagram of the alloy and show that the homogeneous phase is characterized by a large amount of short-range order occurring among first-nearest neighbors. Electronic-structure calculations performed using the special quasi-random structures approach indicate that the energy gap of the alloy is rather sensitive to this short-range order.
The lattice dynamics for NiCo, NiFe, NiFeCo, NiFeCoCr, and NiFeCoCrMn medium to high entropy alloy have been investigated using the DFT calculation. The phonon dispersions along three different symmetry directions are calculated by the weighted dynamical matrix (WDM) approach and compared with the supercell approach and inelastic neutron scattering. We could correctly predict the trend of increasing of the vibrational entropy by adding the alloys and the highest vibrational entropy in NiFeCoCrMn high entropy alloy by WDM approach. The averaged first nearest neighbor (1NN) force constants betwe…
Proposed as blanket structural materials for fusion power reactors, reduced activation ferritic/martensitic (RAFM) steel undergoes volume expanding and contracting in a cyclic mode under service environment. Particularly, being subjected to significant fluxes of fusion neutrons RAFM steel suffers considerable local volume variations in the radiation damage involved regions. It is necessary to study the structure properties of the alloying elements in contraction and expansion states. In this paper we studied local substitution structures of thirteen alloying elements Al, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, Nb…
The local atomic order of an amorphous Ga$_{50}$Se$_{50}$ alloy produced by Mechanical Alloying (MA) was studied by the Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) techniques and by Reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) simulations of its total x-ray structure factor. The coordination numbers and interatomic distances for the first neighbors were determined by means of EXAFS analysis and RMC simulations. The RMC simulations also furnished the partial pair distribution functions $G^{\text{RMC}}_{\text{Ga-Ga}}(r)$, $G^{\text{RMC}}_{\text{Ga-Se}}(r)$ and $G^{\text{RMC}}_{\tex…
A Fe89.15Cr10.75 alloy in a heavily strained (by cold rolling) and strain-relaxed states was studied by means of the conversion electrons Mössbauer spectroscopy (CEMS). Analysis of the spectra in terms of a two-shell model revealed significant differences between the studied samples, in particular, in values of the hyperfine field, a distribution of Cr atoms within the first two neighbor-shells, the latter was expressed in terms of the short-range order parameters, and in the magnetic texture.
EXAFS analysis of pure elements, binary and ternary equiatomic refractory alloys within the Nb-Zr-Ti-Hf-Ta system is performed at the Nb and Zr K-edges to analyze the evolution of the chemical local environment and the lattice distortion. A good mixing of the elements is found at the atomic scale. For some compounds, a distribution of distances between the central atom and its neighbors suggests a distortion of the structure. Finally, analysis of the Debye-Waller parameters show some correlation with the lattice distortion parameter $δ^2$, and allows to quantify experimentally the static disor…
Redistribution of Cr atoms in a Fe85Cr15 alloy caused by its irradiation with 250 keV He ions to different doses viz. 5, 10 and 30 dpa was investigated by means of conversion electrons Mossbauer spectroscopy. The redistribution was expressed in terms of the Warren-Cowley short-range order parameters alpha1, alpha2 and alpha12 pertaining to the first, second and both neighbor shells, respectively. Clear evidence was found, both for non-irradiated and irradiated samples that the actual distribution of Cr atoms is characteristic of the shell, and for a given shell it depends on the irradiation do…
High real-space resolution atomic pair distribution functions (PDFs) have been obtained from ZnSe(1-x)Te(x) using neutron powder diffraction. Distinct Zn-Se and Zn-Te nearest neighbor (nn) bonds, differing in length by delta_r= 0.14Angstroms, are resolved in the measured PDF allowing the evolution with composition of the individual bond-lengths to be studied. The local bond-lengths change much more slowly with doping than the average bond-length obtained crystallographically. The nn bond-length distributions are constant with doping but higher-neighbor pair distributions broaden significantly …
Ferromagnetic properties of In1-xMnxAs thin films were investigated. Room temperature ferromagnetic order was observed in nominally single-phase films with x = 0.01-0.10. Magnetization measurements indicated that these In1-xMnxAs samples had a Curie temperature of 333 K. The Curie temperature was independent of Mn concentration. The temperature dependent magnetization along with the magnitude of the saturation magnetization and microstructural data indicate that the source of the high-temperature ferromagnetism in single-phase films is not attributable to MnAs nanoprecipitates. The high transi…
We expand our study on cubic BiFeO$_3$ alloys presented in [K. Koumpouras and I. Galanakis, \textit{J. Magn. Magn. Mater} 323, 2328 (2011)] to include also the BiMnO$_3$ and Bi$_2$MnFeO$_6$ alloys. For the latter we considered three different cases of distribution of the Fe-Mn atoms in the lattice and six possible magnetic configurations. We show that Fe and Mn atoms in all cases under study retain a large spin magnetic moment, the magnitude of which exceeds the 3 $μ_B$. Their electronic and magnetic properties are similar to the ones in the parent BiMnO$_3$ and BiFeO$_3$ compounds. Thus oxyge…
A redistribution of Cr atoms related to a phase decomposition (PD) caused by an isothermal annealing at 415 C in a 15.15 at%Cr Fe-Cr alloy was studied in an ex-situ way by the conversion electrons Mössbauer spectroscopy. Analysis of the spectra in terms of a two-shell model enabled determination of probabilities of 17 different atomic configurations and average numbers of Cr atoms within the first (1NN) and the second (2NN) neighbor shells versus annealing time, separately. The annealing-time evolution of these numbers, expressed in terms of the Cowley-Warren short-range order (SRO) parameters…
This paper compares two approaches for investigating the near-surface composition profile that results from surface segregation in the so-called Cantor alloy, an equi-molar alloy of CoCrFeMnNi. One approach consists of atomistic computer simulations by a combination of Monte Carlo, molecular dynamics and molecular statics techniques, and the other is a nearest neighbor analytical calculation performed in the regular solution approximation with a multilayer model, developed here for the first time for a N-component system and tested for the 5-component Cantor alloy. This type of comparison is u…
Due to their high strength and advantageous high-temperature properties, tungsten-based alloys are being considered as plasma-facing candidate materials in fusion devices. Under neutron irradiation, rhenium, which is produced by nuclear transmutation, has been found to precipitate in elongated precipitates forming thermodynamic intermetallic phases at concentrations well below the solubility limit. Recent measurements have shown that Re precipitation can lead to substantial hardening, which may have a detrimental effect on the fracture toughness of W alloys. This puzzle of sub-solubility preci…
In this paper we show that an effective Hamiltonian fit with first principles calculations predicts an order/disorder transition occurs in the high entropy alloy MoNbTaW. Using the Alloy Theoretic Automated Toolset, we find T=0K enthalpies of formation for all binaries containing Mo, Nb, Ta, and W, and in particular we find the stable structures for binaries at equiatomic concentrations are close in energy to the associated B2 structure, suggesting that at intermediate temperatures a B2 phase is stabilized in MoNbTaW. Our previously published hybrid Monte Carlo/molecular dynamics results for t…
This paper studies short-range order (SRO) in the semiconductor alloy (GaN)$_{1-x}$(ZnO)$_x$. Monte Carlo simulations performed on a density functional theory (DFT)-based cluster expansion model show that the heterovalent alloys exhibit strong SRO because of the energetic preference for the valence-matched nearest-neighbor Ga-N and Zn-O pairs. To represent the SRO-related structural correlations, we introduce the concept of Special Quasi-ordered Structure (SQoS). Subsequent DFT calculations reveal dramatic influence of SRO on the atomic, electronic and vibrational properties of the (GaN)$_{1-x…
Multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) continue to garner interest as structural and plasma-facing materials due to their structure stability and increased resistance to radiation damage. Despite sensitivity of mechanical behavior to irradiation and point-defect formation, there has been scant attention on understanding vacancy stability and diffusion in refractory-based MPEAs. Using density-functional theory, we examine vacancy stability and diffusion barriers in body-centered cubic (Mo0.95W0.05)0.85Ta0.10(TiZr)0.05. The results in this MPEA show strong dependence on environment, originating …
As pointed out by Linus Pauling in his classic work on the relationship between crystal packing and ionic radius ratio, a difference in atomic size can be accommodated more readily by an ordered structure than by a disordered one. Because of mathematical complexity, however, very few works have been reported for substitutional alloys. In this work, coherency-induced ordering in substitutional alloys is examined through a simple model based on a two-dimensional square lattice. Within the assumption of nearest neighbor interactions on a square lattice, both modified Bragg-Williams and Onsager ap…
We investigate the formation of long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) structure for Mg-Y-Zn ternary alloys based on the short-range order (SRO) tendency of energetically competitive disordered phases. We find that unisotropic SRO tendencies for structures with stacking faults cannot be simply interpreted by arithmetic average of SRO for constituent fcc and hcp stackings, indicating that the SRO should be significantly affected by periodically-introduced stacking faults. We also find that SRO for neighboring Y-Zn pair, which should have positive sign to form specific L12 type cluster found in LPS…
Vacancy is known to play a critical role in solid state diffusion and determine many properties of the materials. We report a proof-of-principle result on Mn in the role of tuning vacancy diffusion by an anomalous Friedel Oscillations effect in an equivalent NiCoFeCrMn high entropy alloy. The vacancy induced Friedel Oscillations is destroyed by the presence of the first nearest neighboring Mn, opening a channel for long-range influence on the surrounding atoms from the vacancy, resulting in a lower vacancy diffusion barrier energy, despite of the atom type. The effects lead to a remarkable dif…
Among the ferromagnetic binary alloys, body centered cubic (bcc) Fe-Co is the one showing the highest magnetization. It is known experimentally that ordered Fe-Co structures show a larger magnetization than the random solid solutions with the same Co content. In this work, based on density functional theory (DFT) studies, we aim at a quantitative prediction of this feature, and point out the role of the orbital magnetic moments. Then, we introduce a DFT-based analytical model correlating local magnetic moments and chemical compositions for Co concentrations ranging from 0 to 70 at.%. It is als…

The exceptional mechanical strengths of medium and high-entropy alloys have been attributed to hardening in random solid solutions. Here, we evidence non-random chemical mixings in CrCoNi alloys, resulting from short range ordering. A novel data-mining approach of electron nanodiffraction patterns enabled the study, which is assisted by neutron scattering, atom probe tomography, and diffraction simulation using first principles theory models. Results reveal two critical types of short range orders in nanoclusters that minimize the Cr and Cr nearest neighbors (L11) or segregate Cr on alternatin…
The superior properties of high-entropy multi-functional materials are strongly connected with their atomic heterogeneity through many different local atomic interactions. The detailed element-specific studies on a local scale can provide insight into the primary arrangements of atoms in multicomponent systems and benefit to unravel the role of individual components in certain macroscopic properties of complex compounds. Herein, multi-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy combined with reverse Monte Carlo simulations was used to explore a homogeneity of the local crystallographic ordering and spe…
The interaction between substitutional nitrogen atoms in graphene is studied by performing first principles calculations. The nearest neighbor interaction between nitrogen dopants is highly repulsive because of the strong electrostatic repulsion between nitrogen atoms, which prevents the full phase separation in nitrogen doped graphene. Interestingly, there are two relatively stable nitrogen-nitrogen pairs due to the anisotropy charge redistribution induced by nitrogen doping. We reveal two stable semiconducting ordered N doped graphene structures C3N and C12N through the cluster expansion tec…
Transport phenomena are studied for a binary (AB) alloy on a rigid square lattice with nearest-neighbor attraction between unlike particles, assuming a small concentration $c_v$ of vacancies $V$ being present, to which $A(B)$ particles can jump with rates $Γ_A (Γ_B)$ in the case where the nearest neighbor attractive energy $ε_{AB}$ is negligible in comparison with the thermal energy $k_BT$ in the system. This model exhibits a continuous order-disorder transition for concentrations $c_A,c_B=1-c_A-c_V$ in the range $c_{A,1}^{crit}\leq c_A \leq c_{A,2}^{crit}$, with $c_{A,1}^{crit}=(1-m^*-c_V)/2$…
High real-space resolution atomic pair distribution functions (PDF)s from the alloy series Ga_1-xIn_xAs have been obtained using high-energy x-ray diffraction. The first peak in the PDF is resolved as a doublet due to the presence of two nearest neighbor bond lengths, Ga-As and In-As, as previously observed using XAFS. The widths of nearest, and higher, neighbor pairs are analyzed by separating the strain broadening from the thermal motion. The strain broadening is five times larger for distant atomic neighbors as compared to nearest neighbors. The results are in agreement with model calculati…
In this study Mo-Nb-Ta-W refractory high-entropy alloys (R-HEAs) have been studied for their phase stability for a wide temperature range (100 K to 2000 K). The equilibrium thermodynamic phases are determined by the changes in enthalpy and entropy. The enthalpy changes at any temperature are simulated by embedded atom method (EAM) potential based hybrid Monte Carlo molecular dynamics (MC/MD) simulations. Configurational entropy was calculated by quasichemical method. The EAM potentials were all calculated based on the physical input parameters of elements like atomic volume, cohesive energy, e…
The development of machine learning sheds new light on the traditionally complicated problem of thermodynamics in multicomponent alloys. Successful application of such a method, however, strongly depends on the quality of the data and model. Here we propose a scheme to improve the representativeness of the data by utilizing the short-range order (SRO) parameters to survey the configuration space. Using the improved data, a pair interaction model is trained for the NbMoTaW high entropy alloy using linear regression. Benefiting from the physics incorporated into the model, the learned effective …
Microscopic structures for fcc-based quaternary high-entropy alloys (HEA) in thermodynamically equilibrium state is examined based on first-principles (FP) calculation combined with our recently-developed theoretical approach. We find that (i) hierarchical ordering tendency for whole quaternary, and ternary and binary subsystems for the present five HEAs cannot be reasonably characterized by conventional Goldschmidt atomic radius or by those obtained from unary system for FP calculation, but can be systematically characterized by atomic radius from specially fluctuated configuration. (ii) orde…
High-entropy alloys (HEAs) composed of multiple principal elements have been shown to offer improved radiation resistance over their elemental or dilute-solution counterparts. Using NiCoFeCrMn HEA as a model, here we introduce carbon and nitrogen interstitial alloying elements to impart chemical heterogeneities in the form of the local chemical order (LCO) and associated compositional variations. Density functional theory simulations predict chemical short-range order (CSRO) (nearest neighbors and the next couple of atomic shells) surrounding C and N, due to the chemical affinity of C with (Co…
We present an efficient and accurate method for calculating electronic structure and related properties of random alloys with a proper treatment of local environment effects. The method is a generalization of the locally self-consistent Green's function (LSGF) technique for the exact muffin-tin orbital (EMTO) method. An alloy system in the calculations is represented by a supercell with a certain set of atomic distribution correlation functions. The Green's function for each atom in the supercell is obtained by embedding the cluster of neighboring atoms lying within a local interaction zone (L…
The origin of the spin-glass state in (Fe,Sn)4N alloys is studied on the basis of a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with parameters derived from first principles within the magnetic force theorem applied in the framework of the disordered local moments method and local spin-density approximation. We show that in the alloy concentration range where the spin-glass state is stable only one Fe sublattice is intrinsically magnetic and the interatomic exchange magnetic interactions are essentially short ranged due to effects of chemical and magnetic disorder. The magnetic Fe atoms with well-localized spin mo…
A simple analytic model of point-ion electrostatics has been previously proposed in which the magnitude of the net charge q_i on each atom in an ordered or random alloy depends linearly on the number N_i^(1) of unlike neighbors in its first coordination shell. Point charges extracted from recent large supercell (256-432 atom) local density approximation (LDA) calculations of Cu-Zn random alloys now enable an assessment of the physical validity and accuracy of the simple model. We find that this model accurately describes (i) the trends in q_i vs. N_i^(1), particularly for fcc alloys, (ii) the …
We present an automated procedure for computing stacking fault energies in random alloys from large-scale simulations using moment tensor potentials (MTPs) with the accuracy of density functional theory (DFT). To that end, we develop an algorithm for training MTPs on random alloys. In the first step, our algorithm constructs a set of ~10000 or more training candidate configurations with 50-100 atoms that are representative for the atomic neighborhoods occurring in the large-scale simulation. In the second step, we use active learning to reduce this set to ~100 most distinct configurations - fo…
We present extensive first-principles calculations on the inverse full-Heusler compounds having the chemical formula X$_2$YZ where (X = Sc, Ti, V, Cr or Mn), (Z = Al, Si or As) and the Y ranges from Ti to Zn. Several of these alloys are identified to be half-metallic magnets. We show that the appearance of half-metallicity is associated in all cases to a Slater-Pauling behavior of the total spin-magnetic moment. There are three different variants of this rule for the inverse Heusler alloys depending on the chemical type of the constituent transition-metal atoms. Simple arguments regarding the …
Magnetic properties of a $σ-$Fe$_{16}$Cr$_{14}$ alloy calculated with the charge and spin self- consistent Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) and combined with coherent potential approximation (KKR-CPA) methods are reported. Non-magnetic state as well as various magnetic orderings were considered, i.e. ferromagnetic (FM) and more complex anti-parallel (called APM) arrangements for selected sublattices, as follows from the symmetry analysis. It has been shown that the Stoner criterion applied to non-magnetic density of states at the Fermi energy, $E_F$ is satisfied for Fe atoms situated on all five l…
GeSn on Si has attracted much research interest due to its tunable direct bandgap for mid-infrared applications. Recently, short-range order (SRO) in GeSn alloys has been theoretically predicted, which profoundly impacts the band structure. However, characterizing SRO in GeSn is challenging. Guided by physics-informed Poisson statistical analyses of Kth-nearest neighbors (KNN) in atom probe tomography, a new approach is demonstrated here for 3D nanoscale SRO mapping and semi-quantitative strain mapping in GeSn. For GeSn with ~14 at.% Sn, the SRO parameters of Sn-Sn 1NN in 10x10x10 nm$^{3}$ nan…
