The cyclic deformation behavior of extruded Mg-8.5wt.%Al alloy with a conventional extrusion texture and a modified texture is systematically investigated by in-situ neutron diffraction and elastic viscoplastic self-consistent (EVPSC) modeling incorporating a twinning/de-twinning (TDT) scheme. The role of twinning and de-twinning on the deformation behavior of Mg-8.5wt.% Al alloy is investigated in terms of the macroscopic stress-strain response, the evolution of the activities of various deformation mechanisms, the texture evolution, the evolution of the internal elastic strains, and the evolution of the diffraction peak intensities. The alloy with the conventional extrusion texture undergoes twinning during initial compression and de-twinning during reverse tension. The same alloy does not favor twinning during initial tension, but rather during reverse compression. The alloy with a modified texture undergoes twinning during initial tension followed by detwinning during reverse compression. The results provide insights into the effect of initial texture, loading path, slip, twinning, de-twinning on the cyclic behavior of magnesium.
The purpose of this work is the development of an artificial neural network (ANN) for surrogate modeling of the mechanical response of viscoplastic grain microstructures. To this end, a U-Net-based convolutional neural network (CNN) is trained to account for the history dependence of the material behavior. The training data take the form of numerical simulation results for the von Mises stress field under quasi-static tensile loading. The trained CNN (tCNN) can accurately reproduce both the average response as well as the local von Mises stress field. The tCNN calculates the von Mises stress f…
In the automotive industry, thermoplastic polymers are used for a significant number of interior and exterior parts. These components have to pass all underlying crash and safety relevant tests, where a proper performance is desired in the range of low to high ambient temperatures. Today, the vehicle design is heavily aided by numerical simulation methods for advancing towards a prototype free vehicle development. This requires an accurate modeling of the temperature- and ratedependent, elasto-viscoplastic mechanical response of the polymer structures. In this work, the validation of a novel e…
We present a material (strength) model for describing the deformation of PBX under quasistatic mechanical and thermal loadings. It is a viscoelastic-viscoplastic model incorporating the effects of pressure and temperature on the strength of PBX. The model is calibrated using uniaxial tension and compression tests. Using FEM simulations in Ls-Dyna, we validated the model with creep and relaxation tests. To further validate the model, we performed an experiment with thermally loaded, biaxially strained, sample and measured its deformation using Digital Image Correlation method.
The two-phase composite approach of Estrin et al. (1998) describes an evolving dislocation cell structure. Mckenzie et al. (2007) enhanced the model to capture the effects of hydrostatic pressure and temperature during severe plastic deformation. The goal of the present study is to incorporate this microstructural model into the macroscopic viscoplasticity framework proposed by Shutov and Kreißig (2008a). Thereby, the two-phase composite approach is examined carefully. Both physical and numerical drawbacks are revealed and possible solutions are presented, thus leading to a refined micro model…
Amorphous silica deforms viscoplastically at elevated temperatures, as is common for brittle glasses. The key mechanism of viscoplastic deformation involves interatomic bond switching, which is known to be a thermally activated process. In this study, through systematic in-situ compression tests by scanning electron microscopy, the viscoplastic deformation of amorphous silica is observed without thermal activation. Furthermore, ductility does not increase monotonically with acceleration voltage and current density of the SEM e-beam but is maximized by a factor of three at a specific accelerati…
The viscoplastic behavior of polycrystalline Mg$_2$SiO$_4$ wadsleyite aggregates, a major high pressure phase of the mantle transition zone of the Earth (depth range: 410 -- 520 km), is obtained by properly bridging several scale transition models. At the very fine nanometric scale corresponding to the disloca-tion core structure, the behavior of thermally activated plastic slip is modeled for strain-rates relevant for laboratory experimental conditions, at high pressure and for a wide range of temperatures, based on the Peierls-Nabarro-Galerkin model. Corresponding single slip reference resol…
High-energy synchrotron x-rays are used to track grain rotations and the micromechanical evolution of a hexagonal Ti-7Al microstructure as it is cyclically loaded below its macroscopic yield stress. The evolution of the grains through 200 cycles reveals a continual change in von Mises stress and orientation across the entire specimen indicating a slow accumulation of plasticity even though the sample was cycled below its macroscopic yield. Grain reorientation is consistent with the development of a tension texture despite the negligible magnitude of (macroscopic) plastic strain. It is observed…
Tensile tests were conducted on dual-phase high-strength steel in a Split-Hopkinson Tension Bar at a strain-rate in the range of 150-600/s and in a servo-hydraulic testing machine at a strain-rate between 10-3 and 100/s. A novel specimen design was utilized for the Hopkinson bar tests of this sheet material. Digital image correlation was used together with high-speed photography to study strain localisation in the tensile specimens at high rates of strain. By using digital image correlation, it is possible to obtain in-plane displacement and strain fields during non-uniform deformation of the …
Hydrogen is an efficient energy carrier that can be produced from renewable sources, enabling the transition towards CO2-free energy. Hydrogen can be stored for a long period in the solid-state, with suitable alloys. Ti-rich TiFe0.90 compound exhibits a mild activation process for the first hydrogenation, and Ti(Fe,Mn)0.90 substituted alloys can lead to the fine tuning of equilibrium pressure as a function of the final application. In this study, the crystal structure of TiFe(0.90-x)Mnx alloys (x = 0, 0.05 and 0.10) and their deuterides has been determined by in-situ neutron diffraction, while…

Carbon nanotube (CNT) fibres are firmly established as a new high-performance fibre, but their tensile mechanical properties remain a relatively small fraction of those of the constituent CNTs. Clear structure-property relations and accurate mechanical models are pressing requirements to bridge this gap. In this work we analyse the structural evolution and molecular stress transfer in CNT fibres by performing in-situ synchrotron wide- and small-angle X-ray scattering and Raman spectroscopy during tensile deformation. The results show that CNT fibres can be accurately described as network of bu…
Upon loading, atomic networks can feature delayed viscoplastic relaxation. However, the effect of composition and structure on such a relaxation remains poorly understood. Herein, relying on accelerated molecular dynamics simulations and topological constraint theory, we investigate the relationship between atomic topology and stress-induced relaxation, by taking the example of creep deformations in calcium--silicate--hydrates, the binding phase of concrete. Under constant shear stress, C--S--H is found to feature delayed logarithmic shear deformations. We demonstrate that the propensity for r…
There is a long-standing technological problem in which a stress dwell during cyclic loading at room temperature in Ti causes a significant fatigue life reduction. It is thought that localised time dependent plasticity in soft grains favourably oriented for easy plastic slip leads to load shedding and an increase in stress within a neighbouring hard grain poorly oriented for easy slip. Quantifying this time dependent plasticity process is key to understand the complex cold dwell fatigue problem. Knowing the effect of operating temperature and oxygen content on cold dwell fatigue will be benefi…
This work presents a three-dimensional constitutive model for the martensitic transformation in polycrystalline Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) under large deformation. By utilizing the logarithmic strain and rate, the model is able to account for large strains and rotations that SMA-based components may undertake, but also resolves the artificial stress errors caused by the non-integrable objective rates that are widely used in current commercial finite element software. The model is developed through classical thermodynamic laws combined with the standard Coleman-Noll procedure. The scalar marten…
The first in situ quantitative synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) study of plastic strain-induced phase transformation (PT) has been performed on $α-ω$ PT in ultra-pure, strongly plastically predeformed Zr as an example, under different compression-shear pathways in rotational diamond anvil cell (RDAC). Radial distributions of pressure in each phase and in the mixture, and concentration of $ω$-Zr, all averaged over the sample thickness, as well as thickness profile were measured. The minimum pressure for the strain-induced $α-ω$ PT, $p^d_{\varepsilon}$=1.2 GPa, is smaller than under hydrostat…
The mechanisms of deformation and failure of Cu/Nb nanolaminates manufactured by accumulated roll bonding were analysed using in-situ TEM mechanical tests. Dog-bone small-scale tensile specimens were prepared using a FIB-based technique with the layers parallel and perpendicular to the loading axis. Load, deformation and TEM micrographs were recorded during the in-situ TEM mechanical tests. The specimens deformed parallel to the layers presented very high strain hardening and ductility while those deformed in the perpendicular orientation were more brittle. These results were rationalized in t…
A metastable austenitic Fe-Cr-Ni steel was processed by selective laser melting with low power, resulting in nearly random crystallographic texture. In-situ tensile loading and neutron diffraction experiments were undertaken and the results indicate high ductility, despite the presence of porosity, and pronounced strain-induced martensitic transformation. A secondary hardening is observed in the mechanical data due to the martensite carrying significant load, upon its formation. The pronounced martensitic transformation is discussed with respect to the initial and the evolving deformation text…
With decreasing system sizes, the mechanical properties and dominant deformation mechanisms of metals change. For larger scales, bulk behavior is observed that is characterized by a preservation and significant increase of dislocation content during deformation whereas at the submicron scale very localized dislocation activity as well as dislocation starvation is observed. In the transition regime it is not clear how the dislocation content is built up. This dislocation storage regime and its underlying physical mechanisms are still an open field of research. In this paper, the microstructure …
The creep behaviour and microstructural evolution of a Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu wt.% sample with a columnar microstructure have been investigated through in-situ creep testing under constant stress of 30 MPa at 298 K. This is important, as 298 K is high temperature within the solder system and in-situ observations of microstructure evolutions confirm the mechanisms involved in deformation and ultimately failure of the material. The sample has been observed in-situ using repeat and automatic forescatter diode and auto electron backscatter diffraction imaging. During deformation, polygonisation and recrysta…
Detailed microstructure characterisation and in-situ micropillar compression were coupled with crystal plasticity-based finite element modelling (CP-FEM) to study the micro-mechanisms of plastic anisotropy in lamellar TiAl alloys. The consideration of microstructure in both simulation and in-situ experiments enables in-depth understanding of micro-mechanisms responsible for the highly anisotropic deformation response of TiAl on the intra-lamella and inter-lamella scales. This study focuses on two specific configurations of γ/α_2 lamellar microstructure with the γ/α_2 interfaces being aligned {…
\textit{In situ} high-pressure Brillouin light scattering experiments along loading-unloading paths are used to investigate the compressibility of vitreous silica. An accurate equation of state is obtained below \SI{9}{GPa} using sound velocities corrected for dispersion. Conversely, huge inelastic effects are observed in the range \SIrange{10}{60}{GPa}, unveiling the reversible transformation from the fourfold-coordinated structure to the sixfold one. We find that the associated density changes fully correlate with the average Si coordination number. Decompression curves from above \SI{20}{GP…
Wood deformation, in particular when subject to compression, exhibits scale-free avalanche-like behavior as well as structure-dependent localization of deformation. We have taken three-dimensional (3D) x-ray tomographs during compression with constant stress rate loading. Using digital volume correlation, we obtain the local total strain during the experiment and compare it to the global strain and acoustic emission. The wood cells collapse layer by layer throughout the sample starting from the softest parts, i.e., the spring wood. As the damage progresses, more and more of the softwood layers…

The damage mechanisms and load redistribution of high strength TC17 titanium alloy/unidirectional SiC fibre composite (fibre diameter = 100 $μ$m) under high temperature (350 °C) fatigue cycling have been investigated in situ using synchrotron X-ray computed tomography (CT) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) for high cycle fatigue (HCF) under different stress amplitudes. The three-dimensional morphology of the crack and fibre fractures has been mapped by CT. During stable growth, matrix cracking dominates with the crack deflecting (by 50-100 $μ$m in height) when bypassing bridging fibres. A small numb…

Plastic yielding in solids strongly depends on various conditions, such as temperature and loading rate and indeed, sample-dependent knowledge of yield points in structural materials promotes reliability in mechanical behavior. Commonly, yielding is measured through controlled mechanical testing at small or large scales, in ways that either distinguish elastic (stress) from total deformation measurements, or by identifying plastic slip contributions. In this paper we argue that instead of separate elastic/plastic measurements, yielding can be unraveled through statistical analysis of total str…
