Classical effective potentials are indispensable for any large-scale atomistic simulations, and the relevance of simulation results crucially depends on the quality of the potentials used. For complex alloys like quasicrystals, however, realistic effective potentials are practically inexistent. We report here on our efforts to develop effective potentials especially for quasicrystalline alloy systems. We use the so-called force matching method, in which the potential parameters are adapted so as to optimally reproduce the forces and energies in a set of suitably chosen reference configurations. These reference data are calculated with ab-initio methods. As a first application, EAM potentials for decagonal Al-Ni-Co, icosahedral Ca-Cd, and both icosahedral and decagonal Mg-Zn quasicrystals have been constructed. The influence of the potential range and degree of specialisation on the accuracy and other properties is discussed and compared.
By fitting to a database of ab-initio forces and energies, we can extract pair potentials for alloys, with a simple six-parameter analytic form including Friedel oscillations, which give a remarkably faithful account of many complex intermetallic compounds. Furthermore, such potentials are combined with a method of discovering complex zero-temperature structures with hundreds of atoms per cell, given only the composition and the con- straint of known lattice parameters, using molecular-dynamics quenches. We apply this approach to structure prediction in the Al-Cu-Sc quasicrystal-related system…
We discover the detailed atomic structure of $d$-MgZnY, a stable decagonal quasicrystal alloy of the layered Frank-Kasper type, and related phases, using the "tiling and decoration" approach. The atoms have invariable sites in the rectangle and triangle tiles of a 10-fold-symmetric planar tiling. To discover the lowest-energy structures, we combine the methods of density functional theory (DFT) total energy calculations, empirical oscillating pair potentials (fitted to DFT), fitting effective Hamiltonians for tilings, and discovering optimum tiling structures using a nonlocal tile-reshuffling …
This paper reports formation enthalpies of phases in the Al-Mn-Pd ternary alloy system as calculated from first principles using electronic density functional theory. We consider all crystal structures as reported in the assessed phase diagrams of the ternary and its binary alloy subsystems (Al-Mn, Al-Pd, and Mn-Pd), as well as additional reported or hypothetical structures. Icosahedral and decagonal quasicrystalline approximants are among the structures that we predict to be stable, or nearly so. Our results suggest the need for careful experimental reexamination of phase stability in each of…
We report on the synthesis of carbon nanotubes on quasicrystalline alloys. Aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) on the conducting faces of decagonal quasicrystals were synthesized using floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition. The alignment of the nanotubes was found perpendicular to the decagonal faces of the quasicrystals. A comparison between the growth and tube quality has also been made between tubes grown on various quasicrystalline and SiO2 substrates. While a significant MWNT growth was observed on decagonal quasicrystalline substrate, there was no significant growth observ…
Using molecular dynamics simulations, we study computational self-assembly of one-component three-dimensional dodecagonal (12-fold) quasicrystals in systems with two-length-scale potentials. Existing criteria for three-dimensional quasicrystal formation are quite complicated and rather inconvenient for particle simulations. So to localize numerically the quasicrystal phase, one should usually simulate over a wide range of system parameters. We show how to universally localize the parameters values at which dodecagonal quasicrystal order may appear for a given particle system. For that purpose,…
Understanding the mechanisms which relate properties of liquid and solid phases is crucial for fabricating new advanced solid materials, such as glasses, quasicrystals and high-entropy alloys. Here we address this issue for quasicrystal-forming Al-Cu-Fe alloys which can serve as a model for studying microscopic mechanisms of quasicrystal formation. We study experimentally two structural-sensitive properties of the liquid -- viscosity and undercoolability -- and compare results with \textit{ab initio} investigations of short-range order (SRO). We observe that SRO in Al-Cu-Fe melts is polytetrah…
Using pair potentials fitted to an ab--initio database, combined with replica--exchange simulated annealing, we show the complex, quasicrystal-related Al$_{11}$Ir$_4$ compound contains a new version of the "pseudo-Mackay" icosahedral cluster, with non-icosahedral inner Al$_{10}$Ir and/or Al$_9$Ir clusters that exist in various orientations and account for partial occupancies in the reported structure. Two different compositions show first-order transitions to orientationally ordered phases doubling the (cubic) unit cell, which are respectively metallic and insulating.
Icosahedral quasicrystals spontaneously form from the melt in simulations of Al--Cu--Fe alloys. We model the interatomic interactions using oscillating pair potentials tuned to the specific alloy system based on a database of density functional theory (DFT)-derived energies and forces. Favored interatomic separations align with the geometry of icosahedral motifs that overlap to create face-centered icosahedral order on a hierarchy of length scales. Molecular dynamics simulations, supplemented with Monte Carlo steps to swap chemical species, efficiently sample the configuration space of our mod…
This paper presents a new highly stable periodic approximant to the Al-based F-type icosahedral quasicrystals, i-Al-Pd-TM (TM=transition metals). The structure of this intermetallic Al-Pd-Cr-Fe compound is determined ab initio using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, where the space group is identified to be Pa-3 and the lattice constant 40.5 angstrom. The structure is well described as a dense packing of clusters of two kinds, which are known in the literature as the pseudo-Mackay type and the Bergman type clusters. The clusters are centered at the vertices of a canonical cell tiling, in which…
