In this note we establish a uniform bound for the distribution of a sum $S_n=X_1+\cdots+X_n$ of independent non-homogeneous Bernoulli trials. Specifically, we prove that $σ_n \mathbb{P}(S_n\!=\!j)\leqη$ where $σ_n$ denotes the standard deviation of $S_n$ and $η$ is a universal constant. We compute the best possible constant $η\sim 0.4688$ and we show that the bound also holds for limits of sums and differences of Bernoullis, including the Poisson laws which constitute the worst case and attain the bound. We also investigate the optimal bounds for $n$ and $j$ fixed. An application to estimate the rate of convergence of Mann's fixed point iterations is presented.
The boundary problem is considered for inhomogeneous increasing random walks on the square lattice ${\mathbb Z}_+^2$ with weighted edges. Explicit solutions are given for some instances related to the classical and generalized number triangles.
We study the asymptotic behavior of the sums of divisors when the integers are modelled with the Bernoulli random walk; We prealably study the correlation properties of the corresponding system.
We analyse the asymptotic behaviour of the probability of observing the expected number of successes at each stage of a sequence of nested Bernoulli trials. Our motivation is the attempt to give a genuinely frequentist interpretation to the notion of probability based on finite sample sizes. The main result is that the probabilities under consideration decay asymptotically as $n^{-1/3}$, where $n$ is the common length of the Bernoulli trials. The main ingredient in the proof is a new fixed-point theorem for non-contractive symmetric functions of the unit interval.
We prove moment inequalities for a class of functionals of i.i.d. random fields. We then derive rates in the central limit theorem for weighted sums of such randoms fields via an approximation by $m$-dependent random fields.
The standard textbook method for estimating the probability of a biased coin from finite tosses implicitly assumes the sample sizes are large and gives incorrect results for small samples. We describe the exact solution, which is correct for any sample size.
The longest stretch $L(n)$ of consecutive heads in $n$ i.i.d. coin tosses is seen from the prism of large deviations. We first establish precise asymptotics for the moment generating function of $L(n)$ and then show that there are precisely two large deviation principles, one concerning the behavior of the distribution of $L(n)$ near its nominal value $\log_{1/p} n$ and one away from it. We discuss applications to inference and to logarithmic asymptotics of functionals of $L(n)$.
The aim of this paper is to study a dimorphic property associated with two different sums of identically independent Bernoulli random variables having two different families of probability mass functions. In addition, we give two expressions on sums of products of degenerate Stirling numbers of the second kind and Stirling numbers of the first kind connected with those two different sums of identically independent Bernoulli random variables.
Suppose you can color $n$ \emph{biased} coins with $n$ colors, all coins having the same bias. It is forbidden to color both sides of a coin with the same color, but all other colors are allowed. Let $X$ be the number of different colors after a toss of the coins. We present a method to obtain an upper bound on a median of $X$. Our method is based on the analysis of the probability distribution of the number of vertices with even in-degree in graphs whose edges are given random orientations. Our analysis applies to the distribution of the number of vertices with odd degree in random sub-graphs…
A novel multinomial theorem for commutative idempotents is shown to lead to new results about the moments, central moments, factorial moments, and their generating functions for any random variable $X = \sum_{i} Y_i $ expressible as a sum of Bernoulli indicator random variables $Y_i$. The resulting expressions are functions of the expectation of products of the Bernoulli indicator random variables. These results are used to derive novel expressions for the various moments in a large number of familiar examples and classic problems including: the binomial, hypergeometric, Poisson limit of the b…
Let $S_n=\e_1+...+\e_n$, where $ \e_i $ are i.i.d. Bernoulli r.v.'s. Let $0\le r_d(n)<2d$ be the least residue of $n$ mod$(2d)$, $\bar r_d(n)= 2d -r_d(n)$ and $\b(n,d)=\max ({1\over d}, {1\over \sqrt n})[e^{- {r_d(n)^2/2 n}} +e^{- {\bar r_d(n)^2/2 n}}]$. We show that $$\sup_{2\le d\le n} \big|¶\big\{d|S_n\big\}- E(n,d) \big|= {\cal O}\big({\log^{5/2} n \over n^{3/2}}\big), $$ where $E(n,d) $ verifies $c_1\b(n,d)\le E(n,d)\le c_2\b(n,d) $ and $c_1,c_2 $ are numerical constants.
This article derives quantitative limit theorems for multivariate Poisson and Poisson process approximations. Employing the solution of Stein's equation for Poisson random variables, we obtain an explicit bound for the multivariate Poisson approximation of random vectors in the Wasserstein distance. The bound is then utilized in the context of point processes to provide a Poisson process approximation result in terms of a new metric called $d_π$, stronger than the total variation distance, defined as the supremum over all Wasserstein distances between random vectors obtained by evaluating the …
Feller (1945) provided a coupling between the counts of cycles of various sizes in a uniform random permutation of $[n]$ and the spacings between successes in a sequence of $n$ independent Bernoulli trials with success probability $1/n$ at the $n$th trial. Arratia, Barbour and Tavaré (1992) extended Feller's coupling, to associate cycles of random permutations governed by the Ewens $(θ)$ distribution with spacings derived from independent Bernoulli trials with success probability $θ/(n-1+θ)$ at the $n$th trial, and to conclude that in an infinite sequence of such trials, the numbers of spacing…
In this paper we use probabilistic methods to derive some results on the generalized Bernoulli and generalized Euler polynomials. Our approach is based on the properties of Appell polynomials associated with uniformly distributed and Bernoulli distributed random variables and their sums.
We consider a random trial-based telegraph process, which describes a motion on the real line with two constant velocities along opposite directions. At each epoch of the underlying counting process the new velocity is determined by the outcome of a random trial. Two schemes are taken into account: Bernoulli trials and classical Pólya urn trials. We investigate the probability law of the process and the mean of the velocity of the moving particle. We finally discuss two cases of interest: (i) the case of Bernoulli trials and intertimes having exponential distributions with linear rates (in whi…
This paper considers the entropy of the sum of (possibly dependent and non-identically distributed) Bernoulli random variables. Upper bounds on the error that follows from an approximation of this entropy by the entropy of a Poisson random variable with the same mean are derived. The derivation of these bounds combines elements of information theory with the Chen-Stein method for Poisson approximation. The resulting bounds are easy to compute, and their applicability is exemplified. This conference paper presents in part the first half of the paper entitled "An information-theoretic perspectiv…
We propose an approach to construct Bernoulli trials $\{X_i, i\ge 1\}$ combining dependence and independence periods, and call it Bernoulli sequence with random dependence (BSRD). The structure of dependence, on the past $S_i = X_1 + \ldots + X_i$, {defines} a class of non-Markovian random walks of recent interest in the literature. In this paper, the dependence is activated by an auxiliary collection of Bernoulli trials $\{Y_i, i\ge 1\}$, called {\it memory switch sequence}. We introduce the concept of {\it memory lapses property}, which {is} characterized by intervals of consecutive independ…
We derive normal approximation bounds in the Kolmogorov distance for sums of discrete multiple integrals and $U$-statistics made of independent Bernoulli random variables. Such bounds are applied to normal approximation for the renormalized subgraphs counts in the Erd{\H o}s-Rényi random graph. This approach completely solves a long-standing conjecture in the general setting of arbitrary graph counting, while recovering and improving recent results derived for triangles as well as results using the Wasserstein distance.
Let $V(k)$ denote the waiting time, the number of trials needed to get a consecutive $k$ ones. We propose recurrence algorithms for the probability distribution function (pdf) and the probability generating function (pgf) of $V(k)$ in sequences of independent and Markov dependent Bernoulli trials using generalized Fibonacci sequences of order $k$. Maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) methods for the probability distributions are presented in both cases with simulation examples.
A result of Chebyshev (1864) and Hoeffding1956}, on bounding an expectation of a given function with respect to a Bernoulli convolution (also called Poisson binomial law, or law of the number of successes in independent trials) with any given first moment, is here generalised to the case of any given first few moments, as indicated in the title. A nonprobabilistic, and perhaps more obvious, reformulation is: Every permutation invariant and separately affine-linear function of $n$ real variables $x_i\in[a,b]$ assumes its extremal values given the power sums $\sum_{i=1}^nx_i^1,\ldots, \sum_{i=1}…
A stochastic ordering approach is applied with Stein's method for approximation by the equilibrium distribution of a birth-death process. The usual stochastic order and the more general s-convex orders are discussed. Attention is focused on Poisson and translated Poisson approximation of a sum of dependent Bernoulli random variables, for example k-runs in i.i.d. Bernoulli trials. Other applications include approximation by polynomial birth--death distributions.
In this article, we provide an extension of the Chen-Stein inequality for Poisson approximation in the total variation distance for sums of independent Bernoulli random variables in two ways. We prove that we can improve the rate of convergence (hence the quality of the approximation) by using explicitly constructed signed or positive probability measures, and that we can extend the setting to possibly dependent random variables. The framework which allows this is that of mod-Poisson convergence, and more precisely those mod-Poisson convergent sequences whose residue functions can be expressed…
We investigate the spectrum for partial sums of m position (or gaussian) operators on monotone Fock space based on $\ell^2(\mathbb{N})$. In the basic case of the first consecutive operators, we prove it coincides with the support of the vacuum distribution. Thus, the right endpoint of the support gives their norm. In the general case, we get the last property for norm still holds. As the single position operator has the vacuum symmetric Bernoulli law, and the whole of them is a monotone independent family of random variables, the vacuum distribution for partial sums of $n$ operators can be see…
