We study the host galaxies and black holes of typical X-ray selected AGN at intermediate redshifts (z~0.5-1.4). The AGN are selected such that their spectral energy distributions are dominated by stellar emission, i.e., they show a prominent 1.6micron bump thus minimizing the AGN emission contamination. This AGN population comprises approximately 50% of the X-ray selected AGN at these redshifts. AGN reside in the most massive galaxies at the redshifts probed here, with characteristic stellar masses that are intermediate between those of local type 2 AGN and high redshift (z~2) AGN. The inferred black hole masses of typical AGN are similar to those of optically identified quasars at similar redshifts. Since the AGN in our sample are much less luminous than quasars, typical AGN have low Eddington ratios. This suggests that, at least at intermediate redshifts, the cosmic AGN 'downsizing' is due to both a decrease in the characteristic stellar mass of the host galaxies, and less efficient accretion. Finally there is no strong evidence in AGN host galaxies for either highly suppressed star formation, expected if AGN played a role in quenching star formation, or elevated star formation when compared to mass selected galaxies of similar stellar masses and redshifts.
Galaxies in the environments of 69 0.2<z<0.7 UBR selected AGN have been imaged to Bj~23.5. By applying photometric redshifts and color selection criteria to the galaxy catalogue, the AGN-galaxy cross-correlation function has been measured as a function of galaxy type. The spatial cross-correlation of AGN with red (early-type) galaxies is comparable to the autocorrelation function of elliptical galaxies at low redshift. In contrast, the cross-correlation of AGN with blue (late-type) galaxies is weak and has been detected with low significance. As blue galaxies dominate Bj~23.5 galaxy catalogues…
We have conducted a systematic search of AGNs with IMBHs from the SDSS DR4. As results we found 245 candidates of broad-line AGN with M_{BH}<10^6 \Msun estimated from the luminosity and width of the broad Halpha component. Compared to the pioneer Greene & Ho (2004) sample of 19 IMBH AGNs, our sample has improved in covering a larger range of the Eddington ratio, as well as black hole mass and redshift, taking the advantage of our AGN-galaxy spectral decomposition algorithm. Among these, thirty-six have L_{bol}/L_{Edd} < 0.1, hinting that a significant fraction of IMBHs might exist with weak or…
As a consequence of improved S/N, spectral resolution and wavelength coverage various authors have introduced, without strong justification, new emitting regions to account for various emission line profile differences in AGN. The so-called CIVlambda1549 intermediate line region (ILR) appears to be especially ill-defined. We present observational evidence that suggests the ILR is statistically indistinguishable from the classical narrow line region (NLR). We present the results of theoretical models showing that a smooth density gradient in the NLR can produce CIV and Balmer emission lines wit…
We present the first clustering results of X-ray selected AGN at z~3. Using Chandra X-ray imaging and UVR optical colors from MUSYC photometry in the ECDF-S field, we selected a sample of 58 z~3 AGN candidates. From the optical data we also selected 1385 LBG at 2.8<z< 3.8 with R<25.5. We performed auto-correlation and cross-correlation analyses, and here we present results for the clustering amplitudes and dark matter halo masses of each sample. For the LBG we find a correlation length of r_0,LBG = 6.7 +/- 0.5 Mpc, implying a bias value of 3.5 +/- 0.3 and dark matter (DM) halo masses of log(Mm…
A two-components model for Broad Line Region (BLR) of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) has been suggested for many years but not widely accepted (e.g., Hu et al. 2008; Sulentic et al. 2000; Brotherton et al. 1996; Mason et al. 1996). This model indicates that the broad line can be described with superposition of two Gaussian components (Very Broad Gaussian Component (VBGC) and InterMediate Gaussian Component (IMGC)) which are from two physically distinct regions; i.e., Very Broad Line Region (VBLR) and InterMediate Line Region (IMLR). We select a SDSS sample to further confirm this model and give …
We study properties of the host galaxies of 15 hard X-ray selected type-2 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at intermediate redshifts (0.05$<z<$0.6) detected in $ASCA$ surveys. The absorption corrected hard X-ray luminosities $L_{\rm 2-10 keV}$ range from 10$^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$ to $10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We took the $R$-band image of these AGNs with the University of Hawaii 2.2 m telescope. Thanks to the intrinsic obscuration of nuclear light, we can decompose the galaxies with a spheroid component and a disk component. The resulting spheroid luminosities correlate with $L_{\rm 2-10 keV}$; higher …
The cores of active galactic nuclei (AGN) harbor some of the most extreme conditions of matter and energy in the Universe. One of the major goals of high-energy astrophysics is to probe these extreme environments in the vicinity of supermassive black holes, which are intimately linked to the mechanisms that produce the continuum emission in AGN. X-ray studies seek to understand the physics responsible for the continuum emission, its point of origin, how nuclear activity is fueled, and how supermassive black holes evolve. The key to finding answers to these questions lies in measuring the intri…
Redshift evolution of supermassive black hole mass functions (BHMFs) is investigated up to z ~ 1. BHMFs at intermediate redshifts are calculated in two ways. One way is from early-type galaxy luminosity functions (LFs); we assume an M_BH - L_sph correlation at a redshift by considering a passive evolution of L_sph in the local relationship. The resultant BHMFs (spheroid-BHMFs) from LFs of red sequence galaxies indicates a slight decrease of number density with increasing redshift at M_BH > 10^{7.5-8} M_solar. Since a redshift evolution in slope and zeropoint of the M_BH - L_sph relation is unl…
We use one of the deepest spectroscopic samples of broad line active galactic nuclei (AGN) currently available, extracted from the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey (VVDS), to compute MgII and CIV virial masses estimate of 120 super-massive black holes in the redshift range 1.0<z<1.9 and 2.6<z<4.3. We find that the mass-luminosity relation shows considerably enhanced dispersion towards low AGN luminosities (log L_bol ~ 45). At these luminosities, there is a substantial fraction of black holes accreting far below their Eddington limit (L_bol/L_Edd < 0.1), in marked contrast to what is generally found for A…
We explore the properties of the submillijansky radio population at 20 cm by applying a newly developed optical color-based method to separate star forming (SF) from AGN galaxies at intermediate redshifts (z<1.3). Although optical rest-frame colors are used, our separation method is shown to be efficient, and not biased against dusty starburst galaxies. This classification method has been calibrated and tested on a local radio selected optical sample. Given accurate multi-band photometry and redshifts, it carries the potential to be generally applicable to any galaxy sample where SF and AGN ga…
We study the stellar and star formation (SF) properties of the host galaxies of 58 X-ray selected AGN in the GOODS portion of the Chandra Deep Field South (CDF-S) region at z~0.5-1.4. The AGN are selected such that their rest-frame UV to near-IR SEDs are dominated by stellar emission, i.e., they show a prominent 1.6micron bump, thus minimizing the AGN emission 'contamination'. This AGN population comprises approximately 50% of the X-ray selected AGN at these redshifts. Using models of stellar and dust emission we model their SEDs to derive stellar masses (M*) and total (UV+IR) star formation r…
We use the combination of the 2 Ms Chandra X-ray image, new J and H band images, and the Spitzer IRAC and MIPS images of the Chandra Deep Field-North to obtain high spectroscopic and photometric redshift completeness of high and intermediate X-ray luminosity sources in the redshift interval z=2-3. We measure the number densities of z=2-3 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and broad-line AGNs in the rest-frame 2-8 keV luminosity intervals 10^44-10^45 and 10^43-10^44 ergs/s and compare with previous lower redshift results. We confirm a decline in the number densities of intermediate-luminosity source…
We describe a new estimate of the radio galaxy 1.4 GHz luminosity function and its evolution at intermediate redshifts (z~0.4). Photometric redshifts and color selection have been used to select Bj<23.5 early-type galaxies from the Panoramic Deep Fields, a multicolor survey of two 25 sq deg fields. Approximately 230 radio galaxies have then been selected by matching early-type galaxies with NVSS radio sources brighter than 5 mJy. Estimates of the 1.4 GHz luminosity function of radio galaxies measure significant evolution over the observed redshift range. For an Omega_M=1 cosmology the evolutio…
AGN masses can be estimated by "single epoch" spectral measurements through a mass-luminosity- linewidth relation calibrated by echo mapping measurements of a reference sample of low redshift ($z < 0.3$) and low luminosity ($M_B > -26$) AGNs. To analyze the possible dependence of this relation on luminosity we selected a sample of bright, intermediate redhift ($z \sim 1$) objects and we started a spectrophotometric monitoring campaign with a typical sampling time of about one month. Variability observations of lines with shorter wavelength than H$_β$ will also provide new information on the st…
We have observed with XMM-Newton four radiatively efficient active type 1 galaxies with black hole masses < 10^6 Msun, selected optically from the SDSS. We show here that their soft X-ray spectrum exhibits a soft excess with the same characteristics as that observed ubiquitously in radio-quiet Seyfert 1 galaxies and type 1 quasars, both in terms of temperatures and strength. However, even when the soft X-ray excess is modelled with a pure thermal disc, its luminosity turns out to be much lower than that expected from accretion theory for the given temperature, casting further doubts on a therm…
We have undertaken a multiwavelength project to study the relatively unknown properties of groups and poor clusters of galaxies at intermediate redshifts. In this paper, we describe the XMM-Newton observations of six X-ray selected groups with 0.2<z<0.6. The X-ray properties of these systems are generally in good agreement with the properties of low-redshift groups. They appear to follow the scaling relations between luminosity, temperature, and velocity dispersion defined by low-redshift groups and clusters. The X-ray emission in four of the six groups is also centered on a dominant early-typ…
We employ UV and optical photometry, from the GALEX and SDSS surveys respectively, to study the star formation histories of 561 luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) in the nearby Universe. A small fraction (~4%) of these galaxies have spheroidal or near-spheroidal morphologies and could be progenitors of elliptical galaxies. The remaining galaxies are morphologically late-type or ongoing mergers. 61% of the LIRGs do not show signs of interactions, while the remaining objects are either interacting (~18%) or show post-merger morphologies (~19%). The (SSP-weighted) average age of the underlying st…
We derive black hole masses for a sample of about 300 AGNs in the redshift range 0 < z < 2.5. We use the same virial velocity measure (FWHM Hbeta broad component) for all sources which represents a significant improvement over previous studies. We review methods and caveats for determining AGN black hole masses via the virial assumption for motions in the gas producing low ionization broad emission lines. We derive a corrected FWHM measure for the broad component of H-beta that better estimates the virialized line emitting component by comparing our FWHM measures with a sample of reverberated …
During the final phases of inspiral, a massive black hole (MBH) binary experiences a recoil due to the asymmetric emission of gravitational waves. We use recent results from numerical relativity simulations together with models of the assembly and growth of MBHs in hierarchical cosmologies, to study the dynamics, statistics, and observability of recoling MBHs. We find that, at redshift z<3, kicked non-rotating holes are typically found between 1 and 30 kpc from their galaxy centers, while rapidly rotating ones are typically between 10 and a few hundred kpc. A recoiling hole that carries an acc…
(abridged) We have investigated 136 Chandra extragalactic sources without broad optical emission lines, including 93 galaxies with narrow emission lines (NELG) and 43 with only absorption lines (ALG). Based on fx/fo, Lx, X-ray spectral hardness and optical emission line diagnostics, we have conservatively classified 36 normal galaxies (20 spirals and 16 ellipticals) and 71 AGNs. We found no statistically significant evolution in Lx/LB, within the limited z range. We have built log(N)-log(S), after correcting for completeness based on a series of simulations. The best-fit slope is -1.5 for both…
We have selected a sample of X-ray emitting active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in low-mass host galaxies (5e9-2e10 Msun) out to z~1. By comparing to AGNs in more massive hosts, we have found that the AGN spatial number density and the fraction of galaxies hosting AGNs depends strongly on the host mass, with the AGN host mass function peaking at intermediate mass and with the AGN fraction increasing with host mass. AGNs in low-mass hosts show strong cosmic evolution in comoving number density, the fraction of such galaxies hosting active nuclei and the comoving X-ray energy density. The integrated X…
It is still a matter of debate whether the properties of galaxies hosting an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) are different from the properties of quiescent galaxies. We constructed a sample of ~50 AGN at a mean redshift of <z>~0.6 that lack a detectable optical nucleus. This characteristic allows to study the properties of the host galaxies with much higher accuracy than in the case of "normal" AGN which show a prominent central point source in optical images. A comparison sample of X-ray faint, quiescent galaxies at intermediate redshifts shows a clear bimodality in terms of both rest-frame col…
We present and discuss near-ultraviolet and optical ground-based spectra of the 20 brightest Seyfert 2 nuclei, and HST ultraviolet images and ultraviolet spectroscopy for a few of them. The goal is to study the starburst-AGN connection and the origin of the featureless continuum. The results indicate that half of the nuclei in the sample harbor a young and/or intermediate age population. These stars are formed in powerful and dusty starbursts of short duration, that have bolometric luminosities similar to the estimated bolometric luminosities of their obscured Seyfert 1 nuclei.
We present the two--point correlation function (2PCF) of narrow-line active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected within the First Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Using a sample of 13605 AGN in the redshift range 0.055 < z < 0.2, we find that the AGN auto--correlation function is consistent with the observed galaxy auto--correlation function on scales 0.2h^{-1}Mpc to >100h^{-1}Mpc. The AGN hosts trace an intermediate population of galaxies and are not detected in either the bluest (youngest) disk--dominated galaxies or many of the reddest (oldest) galaxies. We show that the AGN 2PCF is …
Within the context of investigating possible differences between the mechanisms at play in Radio Loud AGN and those in Radio Quiet ones, we study the spectral characteristics of a selected sample of Intermediate-Luminosity Broad-Line Radio Galaxies in X-rays, optical, IR and radio. Here, we present the radio spectra acquired with the 100-m radio telescope in Effelsberg between 2.6 and 32 GHz. These measurements reveal a large variety of spectral shapes urging for radio imaging that would disclose the source morphology. Such studies could potentially discriminate between different mechanisms.
