We have selected a sample of X-ray emitting active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in low-mass host galaxies (5e9-2e10 Msun) out to z~1. By comparing to AGNs in more massive hosts, we have found that the AGN spatial number density and the fraction of galaxies hosting AGNs depends strongly on the host mass, with the AGN host mass function peaking at intermediate mass and with the AGN fraction increasing with host mass. AGNs in low-mass hosts show strong cosmic evolution in comoving number density, the fraction of such galaxies hosting active nuclei and the comoving X-ray energy density. The integrated X-ray luminosity function is used to estimate the amount of the accreted black hole mass in these AGNs and places a strong lower limit of 12% to the fraction of local low-mass galaxies hosting black holes, though a more likely value is probably much higher (> 50%) once the heavily-obscured objects missed in current X-ray surveys are accounted for.
Four quiescent elliptical galaxies were imaged with the NRAO VLA at 8.5 GHz. Within the context of canonical advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAFs), these VLA images plus published black hole masses constrain the accretion rates to be $ <1.6\times10^{-4}$, $ <3.6\times10^{-4}$, $\le7.8\times10^{-4}$, and $\le7.4\times10^{-4}$ of the Eddington rates. These ADAF accretion rates derived at 8.5 GHz have important implications for the levels of soft and hard X-rays expected from these quiescent galaxies.
The distribution of gravitational torques and bar strengths in the local Universe is derived from a detailed study of 163 galaxies observed in the near-infrared. The results are compared with numerical models for spiral galaxy evolution. It is found that the observed distribution of torques can be accounted for only with external accretion of gas onto spiral disks. Accretion is responsible for bar renewal - after the dissolution of primordial bars - as well as the maintenance of spiral structures. Models of isolated, non-accreting galaxies are ruled out. Moderate accretion rates do not explain…
We study the orientation of accretion disks, traced by the position angle of the jet, relative to the dust disk major axis in a sample of 20 nearby Radio Galaxies. We find that the observed distribution of angles between the jet and dust disk major axis is consistent with jets homogeneously distributed over a polar cap of 77 degrees.
Gravitational microlensing is a very useful tool for investigating the innermost part of lensed quasars, especially for studying a relativistic accretion disk around a massive black hole (BH) supposed to exist in a quasar's center. Here we present a short overview of our recent investigations in this field.
Studies of the halo gas in the Milky Way and in nearby spiral galaxies show the presence of gas complexes that cannot be reconciled with an internal (galactic fountain) origin and are direct evidence of gas accretion. Estimating gas accretion rates from these features consistently gives values, which are one order of magnitude lower than what is needed to feed the star formation. I show that this problem can be overcome if most of the accretion is in fact "hidden" as it mixes with the galactic fountain material coming from the disk. This model not only provides an explanation for the missing g…
We present evidence for cosmological gas accretion onto spiral galaxies in the local universe. The accretion is seen through its effects on the dynamics of the extra-planar neutral gas. The accretion rates that we estimate for two nearby spiral galaxies are of the order of their star formation rates. Our model shows that most of the extra-planar gas is produced by supernova feedback (galactic fountain) and only 10-20 % comes from accretion. The accreting material must have low specific angular momentum about the disc's spin axis, although the magnitude of the specific angular-momentum vector c…
I discuss observations of magnitude residuals from the B-band Tully-Fisher relationship, B-V color, chemical abundance gradients, and asymmetries in the H I and stellar disks of nearby spiral galaxies within the context of a model in which small satellites or H I clouds are accreted onto the outer disks of spiral galaxies. Correlations between the various observables support the hypothesis that accretion dilutes the gas phase abundances in the outer disk, steepens the abundance gradient across the disk, increases the star formation rate, and creates asymmetries in the outer disk. By estimating…
X-ray spectral features which are unusually strong in many Narrow-Line Seyfert galaxies are found to be consistent with reflection from strongly ionized matter, providing further evidence of a high accretion rate in these objects and offering a unique signature of that key parameter in future observations.
The mass of the central black hole in Seyfert galaxies and QSOs can be determined from the broad emission lines and the reverberation method. Using the measured black hole mass and the bolometric or ionizing luminosity, the accretion rate can be estimated. Compiling a sample of Seyfert 1 galaxies and QSOs with reliable central masses, estimated ionizing luminosities and X-ray spectral slopes, we find that the X-ray spectral slope strongly correlates with the accretion rate. The objects in the sample are found to be distributed in two distinct classes in the spectral index versus Log(L_ion/L_Ed…
We used the standard geometrical thin accretion theory to obtain the accretion rates in Seyfert 1 galaxies and quasars. Combining accretion rates with the bolometric luminosity, we obtained the accretion efficiency. We found most of Seyfert 1 galaxies and radio quiet quasars have lower accretion efficiencies while most of the radio loud quasars possess higher accretion efficiencies. This finding further implies most of radio loud quasars possess Kerr black holes while Seyfert 1 galaxies and radio quiet quasars may not possess Kerr black holes. Considering the difference of the accretion effici…
Polar ring galaxies are flattened stellar systems with an extended ring of gas and stars rotating in a plane almost perpendicular to the central galaxy. We show that their formation can occur naturally in a hierarchical universe where most low mass galaxies are assembled through the accretion of cold gas infalling along megaparsec scale filamentary structures. Within a large cosmological hydrodynamical simulation we find a system that closely resembles the classic polar ring galaxy NGC 4650A. How galaxies acquire their gas is a major uncertainty in models of galaxy formation and recent theoret…
We use an X-ray stacking technique to investigate the evolution of the mean X-ray luminosity of ~21,000 red galaxies at 0.3 < z < 0.9 as a function of their stellar mass and redshift. The red galaxies are selected from the 9.3 deg^2 Bootes field of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey (NDWFS). The mean X-ray luminosity is an order of magnitude larger than we would expect from stellar sources alone and therefore must be primarily due to AGN emission. The X-ray luminosities (L_x ~ 10^41 ergs/s) imply that these must be sources with relatively low accretion rates and/or accretion efficiencies onto the…
We have analyzed the optical and radio properties of a sample of 3CR FR I radio galaxies which have Hubble Space Telescope imaging capable of detecting optical cores. The jet powers of the FR I radio galaxies are estimated from their low-frequency radio luminosities, and the optical core luminosity is taken as an upper limit on the emission from any unobscured accretion disc. We argue that if the accretion discs in these sources are assumed to be advection dominated accretion flows (ADAFs), or adiabatic inflow-outflow solution (ADIOS) flows, then the Blandford-Znajek mechanism (Blandford & Zna…
I summarize the main observational properties of low-luminosity AGNs in nearby galaxies to argue that they are the high-mass analogs of black hole X-ray binaries in the "low/hard" state. The principal characteristics of low-state AGNs can be accommodated with a scenario in which the central engine is comprised of three components: an optically thick, geometrically accretion disk with a truncated inner radius, a radiatively inefficient flow, and a compact jet.
We review the latest attempts to determine the accretion geometry in radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN). These objects, which comprise ~10-20% of the AGN population, produce powerful collimated radio jets that can extend thousands of parsecs from the center of the host galaxy. Recent multiwavelength surveys have shown that radio-loudness is more common in low-luminosity AGN than in higher luminosity Seyfert galaxies or quasars. These low-luminosity AGN have small enough accretion rates that they are most likely accreting via a geometrically thick and radiatively inefficient accretion flow…
We investigated the correlation between nuclear/circumnuclear starbursts around the active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and the AGN activities for 43 Seyfert galaxies in the CfA and 12 micron samples. We found that circumnuclear starburst luminosity as well as nuclear starburst luminosity are positively correlated with AGN luminosity. Moreover, nuclear starburst luminosity is more strongly correlated with the AGN luminosity normalized with AGN Eddington luminosity than is circumnuclear starburst luminosity. This implies that starbursts nearer the AGN could have a greater effect on AGN mass accretion…
Can the present dynamics of spiral galaxies tell us something about the merging history, the formation and evolution of disks? Galaxy interactions thicken or destroy disks; the simultaneous presence of thick and thin disks is a tracer of past accretion, and also of recent disk re-formation. Observation of a large number of counter-rotating disks is also evidence of past mergers, as well as the frequency of polar-ring galaxies. Finally, the ubiquitous presence of warps in the outer parts of HI disks might also provide a clue of how frequently disks accrete mass with different angular momentum.
We investigate accretion disc models for the X-ray emission of Seyfert-1 galaxies and the hard state of black-hole X-ray binaries. We concentrate on two hot accretion disc models: advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) and recently found luminous hot accretion flow (LHAF). We solve for the global solution of both ADAF and LHAF to obtain the electron temperature, $T_{\rm e}$, and Thompson optical depth, $τ$, at the radius where most of the radiation comes from. We adopt two kinds of electron energy equations. In one, only synchrotron and bremsstrahlung radiation and their Comptonization are …
We quantify the degree of lopsidedness for a sample of 149 galaxies observed in the near-infrared from the OSUBGS sample, and try to explain the physical origin for the observed disk lopsidedness. We confirm previous studies, but now for a larger sample, that a large fraction of galaxies show significant lopsidedness in their stellar disks, measured as the Fourier amplitude of the m=1 component, normalised to the average or m=0 component, in the surface density. Late-type galaxies are found to be more lopsided, while the presence of m=2 spiral arms and bars is correlated. The m=1 amplitude is …
Evidence for the accretion of cold gas in galaxies has been rapidly accumulating in the past years. HI observations of galaxies and their environment have brought to light new facts and phenomena which are evidence of ongoing or recent accretion: 1) A large number of galaxies are accompanied by gas-rich dwarfs or are surrounded by HI cloud complexes, tails and filaments. It may be regarded as direct evidence of cold gas accretion in the local universe. It is probably the same kind of phenomenon of material infall as the stellar streams observed in the halos of our galaxy and M31. 2) Considerab…
We investigate the relationship between the present day optical luminosity function of galaxies and the X-ray luminosity function of Seyfert 1s to determine the fraction of galaxies which host Seyfert 1 nuclei and their Eddington ratios. The local type 1 AGN X-ray luminosity function is well reproduced if ~ 1% of all galaxies are type 1 Seyferts which have Eddington ratios of ~ 10^{-3}. However, in such a model the X-ray luminosity function is completely dominated by AGN in E and S0 galaxies, contrary to the observed mix of Seyfert host galaxies. To obtain a plausible mix of AGN host galaxy mo…
In recent surveys of Radio-loud AGN, a new sub-class of objects, known as Weak-Line Radio Galaxies (WLRGs) has emerged. These radio galaxies have only weak, low-ionization optical emission lines. In the X-ray band, these objects are much fainter and have flatter spectra than broad-line and narrow-line radio galaxies. In these respects, WLRGs are reminiscent of Low Ionization Nuclear Emission Regions (LINERs). We have begun a multi-wavelength study of WLRGs to better understand their possible connection to LINERs and the structure of the accretion flow in both these systems. Here, we present ne…
A supermassive black hole binary may form during galaxy mergering. we investigate the interaction of the supermassive binary black holes (SMBBHs) and an accretion disk and show that the detected X-shaped structure in some FRII radio galaxies may be due to the interaction-realignment of inclined binary and accretion disk occurred within the pc scale of the galaxy center. We compare in detail the model and observations and show that the configuration is consistent very well with the observations of X-shaped radio sources. X-shaped radio feature form only in FRII radio sources due to the strong i…
Studies of the HI in galaxies have clearly shown that subtle details of the HI distribution and kinematics often harbour key information for understanding the structure and evolution of galaxies. Evidence for the accretion of material has grown over the past many years and clear signatures can be found in HI observations of galaxies. We have obtained new detailed and sensitive HI synthesis observations of three nearby galaxies which are suspected of capturing small amounts of HI and show that indeed accretion of small amounts of gas is taking place in these galaxies. This could be the same kin…
We consider the sample of weakly active galaxies situated in 'Local Universe' collected in the paper of Pellegrini (2005) with inferred accretion efficiencies from $10^{-2}$ to $10^{-7}$. We apply a model of spherically symmetrical Bondi accretion for given parameters ($M_{BH}$,$T_{\infty}$,$ρ_{\infty}$,) taken from observation. We calculate spectra emitted by the gas accreting onto its central objects using Monte Carlo method including synchrotron and bremsstrahlung photons as seed photons. We compare our results with observed nuclear X-ray luminosities $L_{X,nuc}$ (0.3-10 keV) of the sample.…
Evidence for the accretion of material in spiral galaxies has grown over the past years and clear signatures can be found in HI observations of galaxies. We describe here new detailed and sensitive HI synthesis observations of a few nearby galaxies (NGC 3359, NGC 4565 and NGC 6946) which show that indeed accretion of small amounts of gas is taking place. These should be regarded as examples illustrating a general phenomenon of gas infall in galaxies. Such accretion may also be at the origin of the gaseous halos which are being found around spirals. Probably it is the same kind of phenomenon of…
It has been suggested that the final stages of accretion in present--day giant elliptical galaxies occur in an advection-dominated mode. The poor radiative efficiency of this accretion solution accounts for the fact that massive black holes, which are believed to reside in the centres of these galaxies, do not have the luminosities expected if accretion from the hot interstellar medium occurs at the Bondi rate. We discuss the advection-dominated solution for the nucleus of M60 (NGC 4649) and show that accretion at the Bondi rate is consistent with the core flux from radio to X-ray. This soluti…
We study a sample of 44 low-luminosity radio-loud AGN, which represent a range of nuclear radio-power spanning 5 orders of magnitude, to unveil the accretion mechanism in these galaxies. We estimate the accretion rate of gas associated with their hot coronae by analyzing archival Chandra data, to derive the deprojected density and temperature profiles in a spherical approximation. Measuring the jet power from the nuclear radio-luminosity, we find that the accretion power correlates linearly with the jet power, with an efficiency of conversion from rest mass into jet power of ~0.012. These resu…
We model the spectral energy distribution of the type 1 Seyfert galaxies, fitting data from simultaneous optical, UV, and X-ray monitoring observations. We assume a geometry consisting of a hot central Comptonizing region surrounded by a thin accretion disk. The properties of the disk and the hot central region are determined by the feedback occurring between the hot Comptonizing region and thermal reprocessing in the disk that, along with viscous dissipation, provides the seed photons for the Comptonization process. The constraints imposed upon this model by existing multiwavelength data allo…
Using the BH masses deduced from the empirical relation of Kaspi et al. (2000) and assuming that the optical luminosity is provided by the accretion disc, we show that Narrow Line Seyfert Galaxies 1 (NLS1s) accrete at super-Eddington rates, while their luminosity stays of the order of the Eddington limit. We take into account the possibility of a non-viscous energy release in the gravitationally unstable region of the disc. It leads to a smaller accretion rate and to a redder continuum than a standard disc, which agrees better with the observations. The observed bolometric luminosities appear …
The radio emission from supermassive black holes in nearby early-type galaxies can be used to test possible explanations for their low luminosities. We calculate the expected contribution from thermal synchrotron emission from hot accretion flows to the high radio frequency observations of NGC 2300, NGC 1399, NGC 4278 and NGC 4594. We find that, in all cases, and in accordance with our previous findings, hot flows accreting close to their Bondi rates overestimate significantly the observed fluxes. This implies that simply assuming a low radiative efficiency for the accreting gas is not enough …
A significant fraction of nearby galaxies show evidence of weak nuclear activity unrelated to normal stellar processes. Recent high-resolution, multiwavelength observations indicate that the bulk of this activity derives from black hole accretion with a wide range of accretion rates. The low accretion rates that typify most low-luminosity active galactic nuclei induce significant modifications to their central engine. The broad-line region and obscuring torus disappear in some of the faintest sources, and the optically thick accretion disk transforms into a three-component structure consisting…
The Ultra-luminous Compact X-ray Sources (ULXs) in nearby spiral galaxies and the Galactic super-luminal jet sources share the common spectral characteristic that they have extremely high disk temperatures which cannot be explained in the framework of the standard accretion disk model in the Schwarzschild metric. We examine several possibilities to solve this ``too-hot'' disk problem. In particular, we have calculated an extreme Kerr disk model to fit the observed spectra. We found that the Kerr disk will become significantly harder compared to the Schwarzschild disk only when the disk is high…
Not the way one might have thought. In hydrodynamic simulations of galaxy formation, some gas follows the traditionally envisioned route, shock heating to the halo virial temperature before cooling to the much lower temperature of the neutral ISM. But most gas enters galaxies without ever heating close to the virial temperature, gaining thermal energy from weak shocks and adiabatic compression, and radiating it just as quickly. This ``cold mode'' accretion is channeled along filaments, while the conventional, ``hot mode'' accretion is quasi-spherical. Cold mode accretion dominates high redshif…
The validity of the hypothesis that the massive black holes in high redshift quasars grew from stellar-sized "seeds" is contingent on a seed's ability to double its mass every few ten million years. This requires that the seed accrete at approximately the Eddington-limited rate. In the specific case of radiatively efficient quasiradial accretion in a metal-poor protogalactic medium, for which the Bondi accretion rate is often prescribed in cosmological simulations of massive black hole formation, we examine the effects of the radiation emitted near the black hole's event horizon on the structu…
A self-similar solution for the 3D axi-symmetric radiative MHD equations, which revisits the formation and acceleration of accretion-powered jets in AGNs and microquasars, is presented. The model relies primarily on electromagnetic extraction of rotational energy from the disk plasma and forming a geometrically thin super-Keplerian layer between the disk and the overlying corona. The outflowing plasma in this layer is dissipative, two-temperature, virial-hot, advective and electron-proton dominated. The innermost part of the disk in this model is turbulent-free, sub-Keplerian rotating and adve…
We have recently shown that X-ray observations of the population of `low-excitation' radio galaxies, which includes most low-power, Fanaroff-Riley class I sources as well as some more powerful Fanaroff-Riley class II objects, are consistent with a model in which the active nuclei of these objects are not radiatively efficient at any waveband. In another recent paper Allen et al. have shown that Bondi accretion of the hot, X-ray emitting phase of the intergalactic medium (IGM) is sufficient to power the jets of several nearby, low-power radio galaxies at the centres of clusters. In this paper w…
Recent observations of UV-/optically selected, massive star forming galaxies at z~2 indicate that the baryonic mass assembly and star formation history is dominated by continuous rapid accretion of gas and internal secular evolution, rather than by major mergers. We use the Millennium Simulation to build new halo merger trees, and extract halo merger fractions and mass accretion rates. We find that even for halos not undergoing major mergers the mass accretion rates are plausibly sufficient to account for the high star formation rates observed in z~2 disks. On the other hand, the fraction of m…
We use the difference (delta) between the position angles of the nuclear radio emission and the host galaxy major axis to investigate the distribution of the angle (beta) between the axes of the nuclear accretion disk and the host galaxy disk in Seyfert galaxies. We provide a critical appraisal of the quality of all measurements, and find that the data are limited by observational uncertainties and biases, such as the well known deficiency of Seyfert galaxies of high inclination. There is weak evidence that the distribution of delta for Seyfert 2 galaxies may be different (at the 90% confidenc…
Most large elliptical galaxies should now host a massive black hole leftover from an earlier quasar phase. Such galaxies also have an extensive hot gaseous halo. Here we consider why the nuclei of elliptical galaxies are not luminous sources due to the accretion of the hot gas by the central black hole, yet have weak radio sources. In particular we suggest that accretion from the hot medium has low radiative efficiency and forms a hot ion torus surrounding the black hole. Synchrotron emission from the torus can account for at least part of the weak radio sources commonly seen in otherwise norm…
We compare the galaxy population of an SPH simulation to those predicted by the GalICS semi-analytic model and a stripped down version without supernova and AGN feedback. The SPH simulation and the no-feedback GalICS model make similar predictions for the baryonic mass functions of galaxies and for the dependence of these mass functions on environment and redshift. The two methods also make similar predictions for the galaxy content of dark matter haloes as a function of halo mass and for the gas accretion history of galaxies. Both the SPH and no-feedback GalICS models predict a bimodal galaxy…
The present work extends and deepens previous examinations of the evolution of globular cluster orbits in elliptical galaxies, by means of numerical integrations of a wide set of orbits in 5 self-consistent triaxial galactic models characterized by a central core and different axial ratios. These models constitute a valid and complete representation of regular orbits in elliptical galaxies. Dynamical friction is definitely shown to be an efficient cause of evolution for the globular cluster systems in elliptical galaxies of any mass and axial ratios. Moreover, our statistically significant sam…
A recent analysis of HST optical images of 34 nearby early-type active galaxies and of a matched sample of 34 inactive galaxies - both drawn from the Palomar survey - shows a clear excess of nuclear dusty structures (filaments, spirals and disks) in the active galaxies. This result supports the association of the dusty structures with the material which feeds the supermassive black hole (hereafter SMBH). Among the inactive galaxies there is instead an excess of nuclear stellar disks. As the active and inactive galaxies can be considered two phases of the "same" galaxy, the above findings and d…
We investigate the possible contribution from the emission of accretion flows around supermassive black holes in early type galaxies to current measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) at radio frequencies. We consider a range of luminosities suggested by targeted radio observations and accretion models and compute the residual contribution of these sources to the spectrum and bispectrum of the observed CMB maps. As for high-resolution CMB experiments, we find that the unresolved component of these sources could make up to ~40-50% of the observed CBI and BIMA power spectrum at l >…
The growth of supermassive black holes by merging and accretion in hierarchical models of galaxy formation is studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations. A tight linear relation between masses of black holes and masses of bulges arises if if the mass accreted by supermassive black holes scales linearly with the mass forming stars and if the redshift evolution of mass accretion tracks closely that of star formation. Differences in redshift evolution between black hole accretion and star formation introduce considerable scatter in this relation. A non-linear relation between black hole accretio…
In this work we focus on the properties of accretion onto galaxies. Through numerical simulations we investigate the geometrical properties of accretion. To span the scale range required in these simulations we have developed a new numerical technique: the multi-zoom method. We run a series of Tree-SPH simulations in smaller and smaller boxes at higher and higher mass resolution, using data recorded at the previous level to account for the matter inflow and the tidal field from outside matter. The code is parallelized using OpenMP. We present a validation test to evaluate the robustness of the…
We investigate the conjecture by Sikora, Stawarz & Lasota (2007) that the observed AGN--radio-loudness bimodality can be explained by the morphology-related bimodality of black-hole spin distribution in the centers of galaxies: central black holes in giant elliptical galaxies may have (on average) much larger spins than black holes in spiral/disc galaxies. We study how accretion from a warped disc influences the evolution of black hole spins and conclude that within the cosmological framework, where the most massive BHs have grown in mass via merger driven accretion, one indeed expects most su…
Polar ring galaxies are peculiar systems in which a gas rich, nearly polar ring surrounds an early-type or elliptical host galaxy. Two formation scenarios for these objects have been proposed: they are thought to form either in major galaxy mergers or by tidal accretion of the polar material from a gas rich donor galaxy. Both scenarios are studied through N-body simulations including gas dynamics and star formation. Constraints on physical parameters are drawn out, in order to determine which scenario is the most likely to occur. Polar ring galaxies from each scenario are compared with observa…
We study a phenomenological model for the continuum emission of Seyfert galaxies. In this quasi-spherical accretion scenario, the central X-ray source is constituted by a hot spherical plasma region surrounded by spherically distributed cold dense clouds. The cold material is radiatively coupled with the hot thermal plasma. Assuming energy balance, we compute the hard X-ray spectral slope Gamma and reflection amplitude R. This simple model enables to reproduce both the range of observed hard X-ray spectral slopes, and reflection amplitude R. It also predicts a correlation between R and Gamma w…
We demonstrate that the luminosity function of the recently detected population of star-forming galaxies and the QSO luminosity function at z=3 can be matched with the mass function of dark matter haloes predicted by hierarchical cosmogonies for lifetimes of optically bright QSOs in the range 10^6 to 10^8 yr. We suggest that the mass of supermassive black holes may be limited by the back-reaction of the emitted energy on the accretion flow in a self-gravitating disc. This would imply a relation of black hole to halo mass of the form M_bh ~(v_halo)^5 and a typical duration of the optically brig…
The discovery of hard, power-law X-ray emission from a sample of six nearby elliptical galaxies, including the dominant galaxies of the Virgo,Fornax and Centaurus clusters (M87, NGC 1399 and NGC 4696, respectively), and NGC 4472, 4636 and 4649 in the Virgo cluster, has important implications for the study of quiescent supermassive black holes. We describe how the broad band spectral energy distributions of these galaxies, which accrete from their hot gaseous halos at rates comparable to their Bondi rates, can be explained by low-radiative efficiency accretion flows in which a significant fract…
The growing evidence for supermassive black holes in the centres of nearby galaxies has brought into sharper focus the question of why elliptical galaxies, rich in hot gas, do not possess quasar-like luminosities. Recent studies suggest that advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAFs), with associated low radiative efficiency, might provide an explanation for the observed quiescence. Although ADAF models have been applied to a number of low-luminosity systems, compelling observational evidence for their existence is still required. Here, we examine new high-frequency radio observations of the …
The luminosities of the centers of nearby elliptical galaxies are very low compared to models of thin disc accretion to their black holes at the Bondi rate, typically a few hundredths to a few tenths of a solar mass per year. This has motivated models of inefficiently-radiated accretion that invoke weak electron-ion thermal coupling, and/or inhibited accretion rates due to convection or outflows. Here we point out that even if such processes are operating, a significant fraction of the accreting gas is prevented from reaching the central black hole because it condenses into stars in a gravitat…
We use hydrodynamic simulations to examine how the baryonic components of galaxies are assembled, focusing on the relative importance of mergers and smooth accretion in the formation of ~L_* systems. In our primary simulation, which models a (50\hmpc)^3 comoving volume of a Lambda-dominated cold dark matter universe, the space density of objects at our (64-particle) baryon mass resolution threshold, M_c=5.4e10 M_sun, corresponds to that of observed galaxies with L~L_*/4. Galaxies above this threshold gain most of their mass by accretion rather than by mergers. At the redshift of peak mass grow…
We present a measurement of lopsidedness for the stellar disks of 60 field spiral galaxies in terms of the azimuthal m=1 Fourier amplitude, A_1, of the stellar light. We conjecture that this lopsidedness is caused by tidal interactions and calculate an UPPER limit on the accretion rate of small galaxies. We exploit the correlation between lopsidedness and photometric measures of recent star formation (Zaritsky 1995) to obtain two independent estimates of the lifetime of these m=1 distortions. First, we show that lopsided galaxies have an excess of blue luminosity relative to that of symmetric …
We consider here the collective accretion of gas by globular clusters and dwarf galaxies moving through the interstellar medium. In the limit of high velocity and/or sound speed of the ISM, the collective potential of the cluster is insufficient to accrete significant amounts of gas, and stars within the systems accrete gas individually. We show, however, that when the sound speed or the relative velocity of the ambient medium is less than the central velocity dispersion of the cluster, it is accreted into the collective potential of the cluster prior to being accreted onto the individual star…
In this letter we revisit the idea of reionization feedback on dwarf galaxy formation. We show that primordial minihalos with v_cir<20 km/s stop accreting gas after reionization, as it is usually assumed, but in virtue of their increasing concentration and the decreasing temperature of the intergalactic medium as redshift decreases below z=3, they have a late phase of gas accretion and possibly star formation. We expect that pre-reionization fossils that evolved on the outskirts of the Milky Way or in isolation show a bimodal star formation history with 12 Gyr old and <10 Gyr old population of…
