A significant fraction of nearby galaxies show evidence of weak nuclear activity unrelated to normal stellar processes. Recent high-resolution, multiwavelength observations indicate that the bulk of this activity derives from black hole accretion with a wide range of accretion rates. The low accretion rates that typify most low-luminosity active galactic nuclei induce significant modifications to their central engine. The broad-line region and obscuring torus disappear in some of the faintest sources, and the optically thick accretion disk transforms into a three-component structure consisting of an inner radiatively inefficient accretion flow, a truncated outer thin disk, and a jet or outflow. The local census of nuclear activity supports the notion that most, perhaps all, bulges host a central supermassive black hole, although the existence of active nuclei in at least some late-type galaxies suggests that a classical bulge is not a prerequisite to seed a nuclear black hole.
I discuss some recent observational results in the research of nearby active galactic nuclei (AGN). These results cover three main topics: (i) evidences for the current paradigm for AGN's, which include a nuclear supermassive blackhole (SMBH) fed via an accretion disk; (ii) evidence that this paradigm may also apply to LINER's, the lowest luminous AGN's and to normal galaxies; (iii) evidences of how the fueling of the SMBH occurs and its relation to recent and intermediate age (10^6 to 10^8 yrs old) episodes of star formation.
We present high-resolution echelle spectroscopy of 676 nearby M dwarfs. Our measurements include radial velocities, equivalent widths of important chromospheric emission lines, and rotational velocities for rapidly rotating stars. We identify several distinct groups by their H alpha properties, and investigate variations in chromospheric activity amongst early (M0-M2.5) and mid (M3-M6) dwarfs. Using a volume-limited sample together with a relationship between age and chromospheric activity, we show that the rate of star formation in the immediate Solar Neighbourhood has been relatively constan…
In order to determine the incidence of black hole accretion-driven nuclear activity in nearby galaxies, as manifested by their radio emission, we have carried out a high-resolution Multi-Element Radio-Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) survey of LINERs and composite LINER/H{\sc ii} galaxies from a complete magnitude-limited sample of bright nearby galaxies (Palomar sample) with unknown arcsecond-scale radio properties. There are fifteen radio detections, of which three are new subarcsecond-scale radio core detections, all being candidate AGN. The detected galaxies supplement the already kn…
This contribution reviews the properties of nuclear activity in nearby galaxies, with emphasis on their implications for the demography of nuclear black holes and the nature of accretion flows in the regime of very low accretion rates.
In this invited contribution I review the justifications for the attempts, currently very popular, to include in semi-analytic models of galaxy formation prescriptions to describe the mutual link between the star formation and nuclear activity in galaxies, which has been for surprisingly long time neglected.
We are conducting a search for supermassive black holes (SMBHs) with masses below 10^7 M_sun by looking for signs of extremely low-level nuclear activity in nearby galaxies that are not known to be AGNs. Our survey has the following characteristics: (a) X-ray selection using the Chandra X-ray Observatory, since x-rays are a ubiquitous feature of AGNs; (b) Emphasis on late-type spiral and dwarf galaxies, as the galaxies most likely to have low-mass SMBHs; (c) Use of multiwavelength data to verify the source is an AGN; and (d) Use of the highest angular resolution available for observations in x…
We discuss the dust attenuation and the star formation rates in the nearby universe obtained from a comparison of far-infrared (IRAS) and ultraviolet (GALEX) observations. The ratio of the dust to UV flux ratio is used to derive the dust attenuation: this dust attenuation is found to increase with the luminosity of the galaxies and from z=0 to z=1. The slope of the UV continuum is found to be a very poor tracer of the dust attenuation in "normal" galaxies. Galaxies selected by their UV emission are found to be rather quiescent with a recent star formation rate equal to only 25-30% of the past …
We present chromospheric CaII activity measurements, rotation periods and ages for ~1200 F-, G-, K-, and M- type main-sequence stars from ~18,000 archival spectra taken at Keck and Lick Observatories as a part of the California and Carnegie Planet Search Project. We have calibrated our chromospheric S values against the Mount Wilson chromospheric activity data. From these measurements we have calculated median activity levels and derived R'HK, stellar ages, and rotation periods for 1228 stars, ~1000 of which have no previously published S values. We also present precise time series of activity…
We analyse the level of nuclear activity in galaxies belonging to UZC-CGs. Spectra are available for 868 galaxies (90% of the whole catalog); 67 % of them show nuclear activity (AGN or Star formation). To carry out a detailed study about the nuclear activity and its relationship with properties of the host galaxy and parent group we select a sample of 215 groups with spectra available for all their members. From the analysis of this sample and using diagnostic diagrams to do the nuclear classification we found that 37% of emission galaxies host an HII nuclear region, 43% an AGN and 20% a Trans…
Active galaxies are often associated with starbursts, which are possible sources of fuelling for the nuclear black holes. By means of optical (3500-7500 A) spectroscopic and narrow-band photometric data (H_alpha+[NII]6548,6583 and [OIII]5007) it is possible to detect starburst features in active nuclei and to study the correlation with Seyfert type and the surrounding environment. Here we present evidences of young stellar populations (HI high order Balmer lines) and extended H_alpha emission (indicative of HII regions) in 6 nearby Seyfert galaxies (z < 0.02). These very preliminary results se…
(Abridged) We present a detailed study of the relation between circumnuclear dust morphology, host galaxy properties, and nuclear activity in nearby galaxies. We use our sample of 123 nearby galaxies with visible--near-infrared colormaps from the Hubble Space Telescope to create well-matched, "paired" samples of 28 active and 28 inactive galaxies, as well as 19 barred and 19 unbarred galaxies, that have the same host galaxy properties. Comparison of the barred and unbarred galaxies shows that grand design nuclear dust spirals are only found in galaxies with a large-scale bar. Tightly wound nuc…
Nuclear activity in galaxies is closely connected to galactic mergers and supermassive black holes (SBH). Galactic mergers perturb substantially the dynamics of gas and stellar population in the merging galaxies, and they are expected to lead to formation of supermassive binary black holes (BBH) in the center of mass of the galaxies merged. A scheme is proposed here that connects the peak magnitude of the nuclear activity with evolution of a BBH system. The scheme predicts correctly the relative fractions of different types of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and explains the connection between th…
A significant fraction of local galaxies show evidence of nuclear activity. I argue that the bulk of this activity, while energetically not remarkable, derives from accretion onto a central massive black hole. The statistics of nearby active galactic nuclei thus provide an effective probe of black hole demography. Consistent with the picture emerging from direct dynamical studies, the local census of nuclear activity strongly suggests that most, perhaps all, galaxies with a significant bulge component contain a central massive black hole. Although late-type galaxies appear to be generally defi…
Using recent high-resolution radio observations of a large sample of Seyfert galaxies (Roy et al. 1994), we analyze the relations between the compact radio core emission and several nuclear and host galaxy properties. Seyfert nuclei hosted in early-type galaxies or in object with nearby companions show stronger radio cores than the norm. Radio core emission show some correlation with total radio emission and with tracers of nuclear activity (mid-IR, hard X-ray and narrow-line emissions). This favours the view that Seyfert radio cores are powered by AGN rather than by radio supernovae.
This paper looks for any correlation between the internal dynamics of elliptical galaxies and the relatively mild nuclear activity found in many such systems. We show that there is such a relation in the sense that the active ellipticals tend to be significantly less rotationally supported than their inactive cousins. The correlation can partly be related to the galaxies' luminosities: the brightest galaxies tend to be more active and less rotationally supported. However, even at lower luminosities the active and inactive galaxies seem to have systematically different dynamics. This variation …
Dust enshrouded activity can ideally be studied by mid-infrared (MIR) observations. In order to explore the AGN versus star forming origin of the nuclear MIR emission of galaxies, observations of high spatial resolution are required. Here we report on 11.3mic. observations with VISIR at the VLT, reaching 0.35'' spatial resolution (FWHM). During the scientific verification of VISIR we have observed a sample of 36 nearby galaxies having a variety of optically classified nuclear activity: 17 black hole driven active galactic nuclei (AGN), 10 starbursts (SBs) and 9 quiet spirals. 16/17 AGN are det…
We present a statistical analysis of the largest X-ray survey of nearby spiral galaxies in which diffuse emission has been separated from discrete source contributions. Regression and rank-order correlation analyses are used to compare X-ray properties such as total, source and diffuse luminosities, and diffuse emission temperature, with a variety of physical and multi-wavelength properties, such as galaxy mass, type and activity, and optical and infrared luminosity. The results are discussed in terms of the way in which hot gas and discrete X-ray sources scale with the mass and activity of ga…
We present high quality long-slit spectra for three nearby powerful radio galaxies 3C293, 3C305, PKS1345+12. These were taken with the aim of characterising the young stellar populations (YSP), and thereby investigating the evolution of the host galaxies, as well as the events that triggered the activity. Isochrone spectral synthesis modelling of the wide wavelength coverage spectra of nuclear and off-nuclear continuum-emitting regions have been used to estimate the ages, masses and luminosities of the YSP component, taking full account of reddening effects and potential contamination by activ…
We have observed 14 nearby (z<0.16) Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) with Spitzer at 3.6-24 microns. The underlying host galaxies are well-detected, in addition to the luminous nuclear cores. While the spatial resolution of Spitzer is poor, the great sensitivity of the data reveals the underlying galaxy merger remnant, and provides the first look at off-nuclear mid-infrared activity.
Chandra observations of low-luminosity supermassive black holes in nearby elliptical galaxies provide tight limits on both their nuclear luminosities and on their Bondi accretion rates. We examine Chandra constraints on NGC 6166, the dominant galaxy in the cluster Abell 2199, which hosts a \sim 10^9 \Msun black hole. We measure a nuclear X-ray luminosity L_{x} \sim 10^{40} erg/s and show that the density and temperature profiles of the hot interstellar medium imply a Bondi accretion rate of Mdot_{Bondi} \sim 3 10^{-2} Msun/yr. This accretion rate predicts a nuclear luminosity of \sim 10^{44} e…
This contribution reviews the properties of nuclear activity in nearby galaxies, with emphasis on results obtained from current optical surveys and multiwavelength follow-up observations thereof.
We present an imaging survey of the CO(1--0), HCN(1--0), and HCO$^+$(1--0) lines in the nearby Seyfert galaxies using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array and RAINBOW Interferometer. Some of the observed Seyfert galaxies including NGC 1068, NGC 1097, NGC 5033, and NGC 5194 exhibit strong HCN(1--0) emission on a few 100 pc scales. The observed HCN(1--0)/CO(1--0) and HCN(1--0)/HCO$^+$(1--0) line ratios in the Seyfert nuclei ($>$0.2 and $>$1.8, respectively) have never been observed in the central regions of nuclear starburst galaxies. On the other hand, the molecular line ratios in the nuclei of NGC 30…
The interpretation of the difference observed between the radial distribution of globular clusters and that of halo-bulge stars in elliptical galaxies is discussed in terms of evolution of their globular cluster systems. I present a short summary of the evidence that dynamical evolution of globular cluster systems is not only able to explain the flattening of their distribution toward the galactic center, but also it may have played an important role on the primordial activity of the parent galaxy.
We derive the first luminosity-metallicity relation for a large objectively selected sample of local galaxy pairs and we compare the pairs LZ relation with the relation for the Nearby Field Galaxy Survey (NFGS). Galaxy pair members with small projected separations (s<20 kpc/h) have systematically lower metallicities (~0.2 dex on average) than the field galaxies, or than more widely separated pairs at the same luminosity. There is a strong correlation between metallicity and central burst strength in the galaxy pairs. All five galaxies in the pairs sample with strong central bursts have close c…
We present 3-band HST imaging of three z</=0.1 compact symmetric objects (CSOs): 4C 31.04, 1946+708 and 1146+596. These objects were chosen on the basis of proximity to Earth as well as HI 21 cm absorption. The inner H-band isophotes of these galaxies are well fit by "nuker" models, typical of nearby ellipticals. Each shows a significant flattening in the isophotal profile at radii ~0.5", as well as variations in ellipticity and PA. However, neither is uncommon for elliptical galaxies. All three show modest departures from nuker models at radii of 1-5 $h_{60}^{-1}$ kpc. Each shows large, well …
One of the least biased complete Seyfert sample available to date has been considered to perform an X-ray survey using the capabilities of XMM-Newton and Chandra satellites. The X-ray nuclear luminosities obtained have been used to perform a multi-wavelength analysis as a powerfull tool in the identification of heavily obscured objects. The new X-ray data, together with highest quality nuclear fluxes available from the radio to the optical band, allow us to obtain nuclear Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) for type 1 and type 2 objects in our sample. The results obtained from the analysis of…
We study the stellar and dust properties of a well-defined sample of local elliptical galaxies to investigate the relationship between host galaxy properties and nuclear activity. We select a complete sample of 45 ellipticals from the Palomar spectroscopic survey of nearby galaxies, which includes 20 low-luminosity active galactic nuclei classified as LINERs and 25 inactive galaxies. Using a stellar population synthesis method, we compare the derived stellar population properties of the LINER versus the inactive subsamples. We also study the dust and stellar surface brightness distributions of…
We report the results of the Chandra ACIS-S observations of the elliptical galaxy NGC 821, which harbors a supermassive nuclear black hole (of 3.5x10^7 solar masses), but does not show sign of AGN activity. A small, 8.5" long (~1 kpc at the galaxy's distance of 23 Mpc), S-shaped, jet-like feature centered on the nucleus is detected in the 38 ksec ACIS-S integrated exposure of this region. The luminosity of this feature is L_X ~ 2.6 x 10^39 erg/s (0.3-10 keV), and its spectrum is hard (described by a power-law of Gamma = 1.8^{+0.7}_{-0.6}; or by thermal emission with kT > 2 keV). We discuss two…
We report the results of the {\it Chandra} ACIS-S observations of the elliptical galaxy NGC 821, which harbors a supermassive nuclear black hole (of $3.5 \times 10^7 M_{\odot}$), but does not show sign of AGN activity. A small, 8.5$^{\prime\prime}$ long ($\sim 1$ kpc at the galaxy's distance of 23 Mpc), S-shaped, jet-like feature centered on the nucleus is detected in the 38 ksec ACIS-S integrated exposure of this region. The luminosity of this feature is $L_X \sim 2.6 \times 10^{39} \rm ergs s^{-1}$ (0.3-10 keV), and its spectrum is hard (described by a power-law of $Γ= 1.8^{+0.7}_{-0.6}$; or…
We present our recent spectrophotometric results of the infrared luminous Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 7679. We find compelling evidence of the presence of a recent nuclear starburst, revealed by the observations of a) the spectral features of high order Balmer absorption lines, b) the weak equivalent widths for CaIIK $λ$3933, CN $λ$4200, G-band $λ$4300 and MgIb $λ$5173, and c) the suggested UV stellar wind resonance lines (N V $λ$1240, Si IV $λ$1400 and C IV $λ$1550) in the IUE spectrum. Using the simple stellar population synthesis model, we find that in the nuclear 2" $\times$ 2" region, the contri…
Using HST/STIS, we have detected far-ultraviolet nuclear activity in the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 1399, the central and brightest galaxy in the Fornax I cluster. The source reached a maximum observed far-UV luminosity of \~1.2 x 10e39 ergs/s in January 1999. It was detectable in earlier HST archival images in 1996 (B band) but not in 1991 (V band) or 1993 (UV). It faded by a factor of ~4x by mid-2000. The source is almost certainly associated with the low luminosity AGN responsible for the radio emission in NGC 1399. The properties of the outburst are remarkably similar to the UV-bright nuc…
We investigate the central regions of 23 spiral galaxies using archival NICMOS imaging and STIS spectroscopy. The sample is taken from our program to determine the masses of central massive black holes (MBH) in 54 nearby spiral galaxies. Stars are likely to contribute significantly to any dynamical central mass concentration that we find in our MBH program and this paper is part of a series to investigate the nuclear properties of these galaxies. We use the Nuker law to fit surface brightness profiles, derived from the NICMOS images, to look for nuclear star clusters and find possible extended…
In order to investigate the nuclear activity of galaxies residing in compact groups of galaxies, we present results of our optical spectroscopic program made at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory. We have performed optical spectroscopy of 69 galaxies which belong to 31 Hickson Compact Groups (HCGs) of Galaxies. Among them, three galaxies have discordant redshifts. Further, spectral quality is too poor to classify other three galaxies. Therefore, we describe our results for the remaining 63 galaxies. Our main results are summarized below. (1) We have found in our sample; 28 AGN, 16 HII nuclei, a…
We have analyzed the frequency and properties of the nuclear activity in a sample of galaxies with circumnuclear rings and spirals (CNRs). This sample was compared with a control sample of galaxies with very similar global properties but without circumnuclear rings. We discuss the relevance of the results in regard to the AGN feeding processes and present the following results: (i) bright companion galaxies seem not to be important for the appearance of CNRs, which appear to be more related to intrinsic properties of the host galaxies or to minor merger processes; (ii) the proportion of strong…
Mid-infrared diagnostics are presented for a large portion of the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS) sample plus archival data from the Infrared Space Observatory and the Spitzer Space Telescope. Our main result is that these mid-infrared diagnostics effectively constrain a target's dominant power source. The combination of a high ionization line index and PAH strength serves as an efficient discriminant between AGN and star-forming nuclei, confirming progress made with ISO spectroscopy on starbursting and ultraluminous infrared galaxies. The sensitivity of Spitzer allows us to pr…
We use a recent near-infrared imaging survey of samples of Seyfert and normal galaxies to study the role of bars in the fueling of nuclear activity. The active galaxy sample includes Seyfert galaxies in the Revised Shapely-Ames (RSA) and Sandage & Tammann's (1987) extension to this catalog. The normal galaxies were selected to match the Seyfert sample in Hubble type, redshift, inclination and blue luminosity. All the galaxies in both samples classified as barred in the RSA catalog are also barred in the near-infrared. In addition, ~55% of the galaxies classified as non-barred in the RSA show e…
We present an analysis of the far-infrared (FIR)-radio correlation within a group of nearby star-forming galaxy disks observed as part of the {\it Spitzer} Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS). In our study we critically test a phenomenological model for the FIR-radio correlation which describes the radio image as a smeared version of the infrared image. The physical basis for this model is that cosmic-ray electrons (CR electrons) will diffuse significant distances from their originating sources before decaying by synchrotron emission. We find that this description generally works well, imp…
A handful of nearby supernovae (SNe) with visual extinctions of a few magnitudes have recently been discovered. However, an undiscovered population of much more highly extinguished (A(V) > 10) core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) is likely to exist in the nuclear (central kpc) regions of starburst galaxies. The high dust extinction means that optical searches for such SNe are unlikely to be successful. Here, we present preliminary results from our ongoing near-infrared Ks-band search programme for nuclear SNe in nearby starburst galaxies. We also discuss searches for SNe in Luminous and Ultralumin…
The dynamic evolution of binary systems of supermassive black holes (SMBH) may be a key factor affecting a large fraction of the observed properties of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and galaxy evolution. Different classes of AGN can be related in general to four evolutionary stages in a binary SMBH: 1) early merger stage; 2) wide pair stage; 3) close pair stage; and 4) pre-coalescence stage. This scheme can explain a variety of properties of AGN: radio and optical luminosity differences between different classes of AGN, long-term and short-term variability, quasi-periodic nuclear flares, recurr…
We present optical spectra of the nuclei of seven luminous (P(178MHz) > 10**25 W Hz**(-1) Sr**(-1)) nearby (z<0.08) radiogalaxies, which mostly correspond to the FR II class. In two cases, Hydra A and 3C 285, the Balmer and 4000A break indices constrain the spectral types and luminosity classes of the stars involved, revealing that the blue spectra are dominated by blue supergiant and/or giant stars. The ages derived for the last burst of star formation in Hydra A are between 7 and 40 Myr, and in 3C 285 about 10 Myr. The rest of the narrow-line radiogalaxies (four) have 4000A break and metalli…
In the course of the follow-up multiwavelength study of a deep radio survey we have discovered that the milli-Jansky radio source PDFJ011423 is a low-redshift (z = 0.65) extremely red galaxy (ERG) with K=15.3, R-K = 5.8 and J-K = 3.1. Optical, infrared and radio photometry, together with optical and near-infrared spectroscopy, reveal a heavily obscured galaxy (A_V=5-6, from the observed Balmer decrement) undergoing vigorous star formation and presenting an active galactic nucleus (AGN). PDFJ011423 is a representative member of the dusty ERG population, providing a local counterpart for studyin…
We present a study of the nuclear activity in a well-defined sample of the most isolated galaxies in the local Universe traced by their far-infrared (FIR) and radio continuum emission. We use the well-known radio continuum-FIR correlation to select radio-excess galaxies that are candidates to host an active galactic nucleus (AGN), as well as the FIR colours to find obscured AGN candidates. The existing information on nuclear activity in the Véron-Cetty catalogue and in the NASA Extragalactic Database are also used. A final catalogue of AGN-candidate galaxies has been produced. It contains 89 A…
Galaxy pairs are ideal sites in which to investigate the role of interaction on nuclear activity. For this reason we have undertaken a spectroscopic survey of a large homogeneous sample of galaxy pairs (UZC-BGP) and we present the results of the nuclear spectral classification of 48 pairs (more than half of the whole sample). The fraction of emission line galaxies is extremely large, especially among spirals (84 % and 95 %, for early and late spirals respectively). SB is the most frequent type of nuclear activity encountered (30 % of galaxies) while AGNs are only 19%. The fractions raise to 45…
Many nearby early-type (elliptical and S0) galaxies contain weak (milli-Jansky level) nuclear radio sources on scales a few hundred parsecs or less. The origin of the radio emission, however, has remained unclear, especially in volume-limited samples that select intrinsically less luminous galaxies. Both active galactic nuclei and nuclear star formation have been suggested as possible mechanisms for producing the radio emission. This paper utilizes optical spectroscopic information to address this issue. A substantial fraction of the early-type galaxies surveyed with the Very Large Array by Wr…
We use the extensive public archive of ROSAT High Resolution Imager (HRI) observations to carry out a statistical investigation of the X-ray properties of nearby galaxies. Specifically we focus on the sample of 486 bright (B_T < 12.5) northern galaxies studied by Ho, Filippenko and Sargent (HFS) in the context of their exploration of the optical spectroscopic properties of nearby galactic nuclei. Over 20% of HFS galaxies are encompassed in ROSAT HRI fields of reasonable (> 10ks) exposure. The X-ray sources detected within the optical extent of each galaxy are categorised as either nuclear or n…
A multi-line millimeter-wave study of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 4945 has been carried out using the Swedish-ESO Submillimeter Telescope (SEST). The study covers the frequency range from 82 GHz to 354 GHz and includes 80 transitions of 19 molecules. 1.3 mm continuum data of the nuclear source are also presented. A large number of molecular species indicate the presence of a prominent high density interstellar gas component characterized by $n_{\rm H_2}\sim10^5$ cm$^{-3}$. Abundances of molecular species are calculated and compared with abundances observed toward the starburst galaxies NGC…
We present some preliminary results from new Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observations of the nearby barred spiral galaxy NGC1672. It shows dramatic nuclear and extra-nuclear star formation activity, including starburst regions located near each end of its strong bar, both of which host ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). With the new high-spatial-resolution Chandra imaging, we show for the first time that NGC1672 possesses a faint ($L(X)~10^39 erg/s), hard central X-ray source surrounded by an X-ray bright circumnuclear starburst ring that dominates the X-ray emission in the region. The centr…
We report the discovery of two binary M dwarf systems in the immediate solar neighborhood using 2MASS. The first is an M6.5 companion to the nearby G star HD 86728 (Gl 376). The known properties of HD 86728 indicate that the M dwarf (Gl 376B) is old, metal-rich and only 14.9 parsecs away. The M dwarf is highly active with both H alpha and X-ray emission. Thus, Gl 376B offers the opportunity to study an old, bright, active M dwarf with known metallicity, age, and luminosity. We show that it is probable that Gl 376B is itself an unresolved pair. The other system consists of an M6.5 and an M8 dwa…
We report preliminary results from an arcsecond-resolution X-ray survey of nearby galaxies using ACIS on board Chandra. The total sample consists of 41 low-luminosity AGNs, including Seyferts, LINERs, and LINER/H II transition objects. In the initial subsample of 24 objects observed thus far, we detect in 62% of the objects a compact, pointlike source astrometrically coincident with either the optical or radio position of the nucleus. The high detection rate strongly suggests that the majority of the objects do contain weakly active, AGN-like cores, presumably powered by central massive black …
We use the sample of emission-line nuclei derived from a recently completed optical spectroscopic survey of nearby galaxies to quantify the incidence of local (z = 0) nuclear activity. Consistent with previous studies, we find detectable amounts of ionized gas in the central few hundred parsecs of most (86%) galaxies. Half of the objects can be classified as H II or star-forming nuclei and the other half as some form of AGN, of which we distinguish three classes --- Seyfert nuclei, LINERs, and transition objects. The population of AGNs consequently is very large; approximately 43% of the galax…
We present surface photometry for the central regions of a sample of 48 spiral galaxies (mostly unbarred and barred of types Sbc or Sc) observed with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope. Surface brightness profiles were derived and modeled with a Nuker law. We also analyzed archival Wide Field Planetary Camera~2 images with a larger field of view, available for 18 galaxies in our sample. We modeled the extracted bulge surface brightness profiles with an exponential, a de Vaucouleurs or a Sersic profile. In agreement with previous studies, we find that b…
(Abridged). We present new high spatial resolution narrowband imaging observations of extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (eDIG) in four late-type, actively star forming edge-on spirals, obtained with ACS on-board HST. Our F658N (H-alpha) observations reveal a multitude of structures on both small and large scales. Whereas all four galaxies have been studied with ground-based telescopes before, here the small scale structure of the extended emission line gas is presented for the first time at a spatial resolution of 0.05", corresponding to 5.0 pc at the mean distance to the target galaxies. The eD…
This is the second of a series of three papers exploring the connection between the multiwavelength properties of AGN in nearby early-type galaxies and the characteristics of their hosts. In Capetti et al. (2005) we presented a study of the surface brightness profiles for the 65 objects with available archival HST images out of the 116 radio-detected galaxies. We classified early-type galaxies into ``core'' and ``power-law'' galaxies, discriminating on the basis of the slope of their nuclear brightness profiles. Here we focus on the 29 core galaxies (hereafter CoreG). We used HST and Chandra d…
Seyfert nuclei are typical active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the local universe, which are thought to be powered by gas accretion onto a supermassive black hole (SMBH). The dynamical effect exerted either by non-axisymmetric gravitational potential (such as a stellar bar) or by interaction with other galaxies has been often considered to cause the efficient gas fueling. However, recent systematic studies for large samples of Seyfert nuclei have shown that; 1) Seyfert nuclei do not prefer barred galaxies as their hosts, and 2) only $\simeq$ 10% of Seyfert galaxies have companion galaxies. These …
In this paper, we present our preliminary results on Seyfert galaxies with circumnuclear/nuclear starburst(SB) activity. We have searched the recent available literature and found 76 active galaxies with clear evidence of nuclear SB activity, among which 16 are Seyfert 1s, 51 Seyfert 2s, and 9 LINERs. After studying the 51 Seyfert 2s, we find that those Seyfert 2s with hidden Seyfert 1 nuclei, have similar Infrared-Radio properties as Seyfert 1 galaxies, and are different from "real" Seyfert 2s without a hidden Seyfert 1 nucleus. The later are similar to starburst galaxies.
V,R,I continuum bands and Halpha + [NII] photometry for circumnuclear star forming regions (CNSFR) is presented, for galaxies with different kinds of nuclear activity: NGC 7469 (Sy 1), NGC 1068 (Sy 2), NGC 7177 (LINER) and NGC 3310 (Starburst). Their Halpha luminosities (0.02 - 7x10**40 erg/s; uncorrected for internal extinction), are comparable to those observed in other galaxies. No systematic differences in the broad band colours are found for the CNSFR in the different galaxies, except for those in NGC 3310 which are considerably bluer, partially due to a younger stellar population. Using …
We present high angular resolution (0".15-0".5) near infrared images and spectroscopy of the Circinus galaxy, the closest Seyfert 2 galaxy known. The data reveal a non-stellar nuclear source at 2.2 microns. The coronal line region and the hot molecular gas emission extend for 20-50 pc in the ionization cone. The data do not show evidence for a point-like concentration of dark mass; we set an upper limit of 4*10^6 Mo to the mass of a putative black hole. We find evidence for a young nuclear stellar population, with typical ages between 4*10^7 and 1.5*10^8 yrs. The luminosity of the starburst in…
We consider the sample of weakly active galaxies situated in 'Local Universe' collected in the paper of Pellegrini (2005) with inferred accretion efficiencies from $10^{-2}$ to $10^{-7}$. We apply a model of spherically symmetrical Bondi accretion for given parameters ($M_{BH}$,$T_{\infty}$,$ρ_{\infty}$,) taken from observation. We calculate spectra emitted by the gas accreting onto its central objects using Monte Carlo method including synchrotron and bremsstrahlung photons as seed photons. We compare our results with observed nuclear X-ray luminosities $L_{X,nuc}$ (0.3-10 keV) of the sample.…
With the aim of studying the influence of environment on the nuclear activity of galaxies, we have selected a well defined sample of 65 Compact Groups of galaxies with concordant redshift in the Hickson Catalog. In this proceeding, we present the results of the classification of nuclear activity for 42 galaxies, based on newly obtained spectral observations. In this subsample, 71% of the galaxies turned out to have emission lines in their nuclei. 73% of these emission-line galaxies were found to have characteristics consistent with low luminosity AGN (LLAGN), which makes compact groups extreme…
We present analyses of deep radio observations of M83 taken with the Very Large Array spanning fifteen years, including never before published observations from 1990 and 1998. We report on the evolution of 55 individual point sources, which include four of the six known historical supernovae in this galaxy. A total of 10 sources have X-ray counterparts from a {\em Chandra} survey. Each of these sources show non-thermal spectral indices, and most appear to be X-ray supernova remnants. Comparing the radio source list to surveys in optical and X-ray, we identify three optical/X-ray supernova remn…
