We study the stellar and dust properties of a well-defined sample of local elliptical galaxies to investigate the relationship between host galaxy properties and nuclear activity. We select a complete sample of 45 ellipticals from the Palomar spectroscopic survey of nearby galaxies, which includes 20 low-luminosity active galactic nuclei classified as LINERs and 25 inactive galaxies. Using a stellar population synthesis method, we compare the derived stellar population properties of the LINER versus the inactive subsamples. We also study the dust and stellar surface brightness distributions of the central regions of these galaxies using high-resolution images obtained with the {\it Hubble Space Telescope}. Relative to the inactive subsample, ellipticals hosting LINERs share similar total optical and near-infrared luminosity, central stellar velocity dispersions, and nuclear stellar populations as judged from their luminosity-weighted ages and metallicities. LINERs, on the other hand, have a larger fraction of core-type central surface brightness profiles and a much higher frequency of circumnuclear dust structures. Our results support the suggestion that LINERs are powered by low-luminosity AGNs rather than by young or intermediate-age stars. Nuclear activity in nearby elliptical galaxies seems to occur preferentially in those systems where sufficient cold interstellar material has managed to accumulate, perhaps via cooling condensations from hot gas.
We have fitted the surface brightness of a sample of 79 elliptical galaxies pertaining to the Coma cluster of galaxies using the Sersic profile. This model is defined through three primary parameters: scale length (a), intensity (Σ_0), and a shape parameter (ν); physical and astrophysical quantities may be computed from these parameters. We show that correlations are stronger among primary parameters than the classical astrophysical ones. In particular, the galaxies follow a high correlation in νand a parameters. We show that the νand a correlation satisfies a constant specific entropy conditi…
We present new data on the globular cluster system of the elliptical galaxy NGC 3923 which show that it has the most globular clusters per unit luminosity of any non-cluster elliptical yet observed, with $S_N=6.4 \pm1.4$. NGC 3923 is also among the brightest ellipticals outside of a galaxy cluster for which the number of globular clusters has been determined. Our observation of a large number of clusters per unit luminosity (high $S_N$ value) for a bright elliptical in a sparse environment is consistent with the suggestion of Djorgovski \& Santiago that the number of globular clusters is a pow…
The stellar population, metallicity distribution and ionized gas in the elliptical galaxies NGC 6868 and NGC 5903 are investigated in this paper by means of long-slit spectroscopy and stellar population synthesis. Lick indices in both galaxies present a negative gradient indicating an overabundance of Fe, Mg, Na and TiO in the central parts with respect to the external regions. Concerning the emitting gas conspicuously detected in NGC 6868, we test three hypotheses as ionizing source: an H II region, post-AGB stars and an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN). Diagnostic diagrams involving the ratios …
There is growing evidence that, at the S(850) < 1 mJy level, the sub-mm galaxy population (and hence a potentially significant fraction of the sub-mm background) is associated with the star-forming Lyman-break population already detected at optical wavelengths. However, the implied star-formation rates in such objects (typically 3-30 solar masses per year) fall one or two orders of magnitude short of the level of star-forming activity required to produce the most massive elliptical galaxies on a timescale ~ 1 Gyr. If a significant fraction of massive ellipticals did form the bulk of their star…
We have observed three fields of the Coma cluster of galaxies with a narrow band (modified Stromgren) filter system. Observed galaxies include 31 in the vicinity of NGC 4889, 48 near NGC 4874, and 60 near NGC 4839 complete to M_5500=-18 in all three subclusters. Spectrophotometric classification finds all three subclusters of Coma to be dominated by red, E type (ellipticals/S0's) galaxies with a mean blue fraction, f_B, of 0.10. The blue fraction increases to fainter luminosities, possible remnants of dwarf starburst population or the effects of dynamical friction removing bright, blue galaxie…
We study the evolution of galaxies in clusters by the analysis of a sample of about 3000 galaxies, members of 59 clusters from the ESO Nearby Abell Cluster Survey (ENACS). We distinguish four cluster galaxy populations, based on their radial and velocity distributions within the clusters. Using the class of ellipticals and S0's (excluding the very bright ellipticals), we determine the average cluster mass profile, that we compare with mass models available from numerical simulations. We then use this cluster mass profile to solve for the anisotropy profiles of the three other cluster galaxy po…
After the discovery that supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are ubiquitous at the center of stellar spheroids and that their mass Mbh, in the range 10^6-10^9 Msun, is tightly related to global properties of the host stellar system, the idea of the co-evolution of elliptical galaxies and of their SMBHs has become a central topic of modern astrophysics. Here, I summarize some consequences that can be derived from the galaxy Scaling Laws (SLs) and present a coherent scenario for the formation and evolution of elliptical galaxies and their central SMBHs, focusing in particular on the establishment a…
We present results of a study of the stellar age distributions in the sample of elliptical-like objects (ELOs) identified at z=0 in four simulations operating in the context of a concordance cosmological model. The simulations show that the formation of most stars in each ELO of the sample is a consequence of violent dynamical events, either fast multiclump collapse at high z, or mergers at lower z. This second way can explain the age spread as well as the dynamical peculiarities observed in some ellipticals, but its relative weight is never dominant and decreases as the ELO mass at the halo s…
We present results of a study on the evolution of the parameters characterizing the structure and dynamics of the relaxed elliptical-like objects (ELOs) identified at z=0, z=1 and z=1.5 in a set of hydrodynamical, self-consistent simulations operating in the context of a concordance cosmological model. The values of the stellar mass, the stellar half-mass radius and the stellar mean-square velocity have been measured in each ELO and found to populate, at any z, a flattened ellipsoid close to a plane (the dynamical plane, DP). Our simulations indicate that, at the intermediate zs considered, in…
Using new observations for a sample of 931 early-type galaxies we investigate whether the \mg2--\so relation shows any dependence on the local environment. The galaxies have been assigned to three different environments depending on the local overdensity: clusters, groups, and field, having used our completeredshift database to guide the assignment of galaxies. It is found that cluster, group and field early-type galaxies follow almost identical \mg2--\so\ relations, with the largest \mg2 zero-point difference (clusters minus field) being only $0.007\pm 0.002$ mag. No correlation of the residu…
[Abridged] We have analysed the parameters characterising the mass, size and velocity dispersion both at the baryonic scale and at the halo scales of two samples of relaxed elliptical-like-objects (ELOs) identified, at z=0, in a set of self-consistent hydrodynamical simulations operating in the context of a concordance cosmological model. At the halo scale they have been found to satisfy virial relations; at the scale of the baryonic object the (logarithms of the) ELO stellar masses, projected stellar half-mass radii, and stellar central l.o.s. velocity dispersions define a flattened ellipsoid…
N-body simulations of collisionless collapse have offered important clues to the construction of realistic stellar dynamical models of elliptical galaxies. Such simulations confirm and quantify the qualitative expectation that rapid collapse of a self-gravitating collisionless system, initially cool and significantly far from equilibrium, leads to incomplete relaxation, that is to a quasi-equilibrium configuration characterized by isotropic, quasi-Maxwellian distribution of stellar orbits in the inner regions and by radially biased anisotropic pressure in the outer parts. In earlier studies, a…
The giant merger remnant galaxy NGC 1316 (Fornax A) is an ideal probe for studying the long-term effects of a past major merger on star cluster systems, given its spectroscopically derived merger age of ~3 Gyr which we reported in a recent paper. Here we present new ground-based, large-area optical and near-IR imaging of star clusters in NGC 1316, complemented with deep HST/WFPC2 imaging. We find that the optical-near-IR colours and luminosities of the brightest ~10 clusters in NGC 1316 are consistent with those of intermediate-age (2-3 Gyr) populations. Unlike `normal' giant ellipticals, the …
The molecular gas in (some) early type galaxies holds important clues to the history and the future of these galaxies. In pursuit of these clues we have used the BIMA millimeter array to map CO emission in the giant elliptical galaxies NGC 83 and NGC 2320 and to search for CO emission from the S0 galaxy NGC 5838. We also present V and R images of NGC 83 and NGC 2320 which trace their dust distributions and enable a search for disky stellar structures. The molecular gas in NGC 83 is well relaxed, but both CO and dust in NGC 2320 show asymmetric structures which may be linked to a recent acquisi…
Ellipticals in very low density environments are extremely rare but hold important clues about galaxy formation and evolution. In this paper we continue our study of isolated elliptical galaxies, presenting results on the radial stellar kinematics for 13 isolated early-type galaxies. We derive radial rotation velocity, velocity dispersion and hermite terms to ~1 effective radius. We observe a dichotomy in kinematic properties similar to that in the elliptical population as a whole, where low luminosity ellipticals tend to be rotationally supported. For all galaxies the V/sigma ratio increases …
What is the origin of the numerous population of diffuse elliptical galaxies (dE) in clusters? These galaxies formed their stars several billion years ago and lost their gas. Though the stellar winds resulting from star formation and the interactions with the environment undoubedtly play a role, their respective role and details of the mechanism of this evolution is still debated. In this presentation we will review the first 3D spectroscopic observations of a handful of dE galaxies. These data reveal complex kinematical structures, with embedded discs and counter rotating cores, and they open…
Recent claims in the literature (Bressan, Chiosi & Fagotto 1994) that the epoch describing the onset of galactic winds in spheroidal star systems has been severely overestimated in the past, due to the neglect of energy deposited in the interstellar medium from stellar winds, is evaluated in the light of a more conservative approach to modeling the input of thermal energy to the system from massive stars undergoing mass loss. Applying the most recent models of stellar kinetic energy deposition, coupled with reasonable assumptions regarding the efficiency of thermalisation, it is shown that con…
The stellar velocity fields of elliptical galaxies hold clues to their dynamical structure and origin. The construction of velocity field models is greatly simplified by assuming an approximate geometrical form for the streamlines of the mean stellar motions. We test the conjecture that confocal streamlines are a valid approximation for realistic triaxial systems. We numerically integrate orbits in Schwarzschild's logarithmic potential, and fit confocal streamlines to their mean velocity fields by minimizing the RMS magnitude of the cross product between the velocity vectors and the streamline…
We present a detailed analysis of the evolution of the rest-frame B-band morphology of K-selected galaxies with 0 < z < 2.5. This work is based on the K20 spectroscopic sample (Ks<20) located within the Chandra Deep Field South area, coupled with the public deep GOODS HST+ACSmulti-band optical imaging available in that field. Thanks to the spectroscopic completeness of this catalog reaching 94%, we can compare the morphological and spectroscopic properties of galaxies with unprecedented detail. Our morphological analysis includes visual inspection and automatic procedures using both parametric…
Surface photometry of 18 Virgo cluster dwarf elliptical (dE) and dwarf lenticular (dS0) galaxies, made by Gavazzi et al. (2001) in the H-band (1.65 micron) and in the B-band (0.44 micron), shows that the ratio of the effective radii of these stellar systems in the B- and H-band, r_{e B}/r_{e H}, ranges between 0.7 and 2.2. In particular, dwarf ellipticals and lenticulars with a red total color index B-H (i.e. with 3.2 < B-H < 4) have equal effective radii in these two pass-bands. By contrast, blue (i.e. with 2.5 < B-H < 3.1) dEs and dS0s have B-band effective radii about 50% longer than the H-…
We report on a study of the parameters characterizing the mass and velocity distributions of two samples of relaxed elliptical-like objects (ELOs) identified, at z=0, in a set of self-consistent hydrodynamical simulations operating in the context of a concordance cosmological model. Star formation (SF) has been phenomenologically implemented in the simulations in the framework of the turbulent sequential scenario through a threshold gas density and an efficiency parameter. Each ELO sample is characterized by the values these parameters take. We have found that the (logarithms of the) ELO stell…
We present H-band imaging of 23 low redshift (z < 0.3) BL Lac objects that were previously investigated by us in the R-band. For all the observed objects, the host galaxy is well represented by an elliptical model, with average scale length R(e) = 7.2 +- 3.6 kpc and average absolute magnitude M(H) = -25.9 +- 0.6. BL Lac hosts are therefore luminous elliptical galaxies indistinguishable from those of low redshift radio galaxies and inactive ellipticals. The best-fit H-band Kormendy relation of mu(e) = 3.7 log r(e) (kpc) + 14.8 mag arcsec^-2 agrees with that obtained for normal ellipticals and r…
Based upon QSO absorption line studies, galaxies at 0.3 < z < 1.0 are seen to have extended gaseous "halos". When the absorption lines are observed at high resolution, the velocity distribution of the absorbing gas gives clues as to where this gas actually arises in and around the galaxies. Cloud to cloud abundance ratios provide further clues, given that the ionization conditions and chemical evolution histories of outer halos clouds, spiral disk clouds, and clouds in elliptical galaxies are different. The key to interpreting the high redshift data is the Milky Way galaxy, the absorption line…
Chandra observations of elliptical galaxies have revealed large numbers of Low Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs) accreting at rates above 10^-9 solar masses per year. One scenario which generates this transfer rate from an old stellar population is nuclear driven mass transfer onto a neutron star or black hole from a Roche lobe filling red giant. However, in our Galaxy, most of these systems accrete sporadically as transients due to a thermal instability in the accretion disk. Using the common criterion for disk instability (including irradiation), we find that this mode of mass transfer leads to tr…
We present a study of the globular cluster (GC) systems of nearby elliptical and S0 galaxies at a variety of wavelengths from the X-ray to the infrared. Our analysis shows that roughly half of the low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), that are the luminous tracers of accreting neutron star or black hole systems, are in clusters. There is a surprisingly strong correlation between the LMXB frequency and the metallicity of the GCs, with metal-rich GCs hosting three times as many LMXBs as metal-poor ones, and no convincing evidence of a correlation with GC age so far. In some of the galaxies the LMXB f…
Models of chemical evolution of elliptical galaxies taking into account different escape velocities at different galactocentric radii are presented. As a consequence of this, the chemical evolution develops differently in different galactic regions; in particular, we find that the galactic wind, powered by supernovae (of type II and I) starts, under suitable conditions, in the outer regions and successively develops in the central ones. The rate of star formation (SFR) is assumed to stop after the onset of the galactic wind in each region. The main result found in the present work is that this…
A growing body of observational evidence suggests that the luminosity, photometric shape and amount of rotational or anisotropical support in elliptical galaxies may provide vital clues to how they formed. Elliptical galaxies appear to fall into two distinct categories based on these parameters: bright, boxy shaped, with little or no rotation, and less luminous, disky shaped with significant rotation. One viable formation scenario is the ``Merger hypothesis,'' in which two disk galaxies merge to form a new elliptical galaxy. A comparison of the luminosity, photometric shape, and amount of rota…
We use Schwarzschild's orbit superposition method to build self-consistent models of elliptical galaxies with scale-free potentials. Our exhaustive study of all physical shapes and central densities for galaxies with scale-free potentials establishes a relationship between the presence of chaos and self-consistency. The extent and the onset of chaos is studied by varying parameters of the model which are believed to be its inducers, such as the steepness of the central density cusp, flatness and triaxiality. We show that gravitational scattering of the central density cusp plays a dominant rol…
We report on a complete CCD imaging survey of 226 elliptical galaxies in the North-East quadrant of the Virgo cluster, representative of the properties of giant and dwarf elliptical galaxies in this cluster. We fit their radial light profiles with the Sersic r^(1/n) model of light distribution. We confirm the result of Graham & Guzman (2003) that the apparent dichotomy between E and dE galaxies in the luminosity-<mu>_e plane no longer appears when other structural parameters are considered and can be entirely attributed to the onset of "core" galaxies at B_T sim -20.5 mag. When "core" galaxies…
We link the lack of FR I type structure among quasars to the void of radio loud quasars below a critical disk luminosity of ~10^46 erg/sec in the PG sample. We argue that the opening angle of the obscuring torus in radio loud quasars depends on the power of the central engine, approaching the jet's beaming angle near the FR I/FR II break. Consequently, low power radio quasars would either be classified as radio galaxies (FR I) or strongly core-boosted (BL Lac) object, depending on the aspect angle, and no conspicuous transitional population would be expected for FR I sources. A closing torus w…
We investigate the locations of the satellites of relatively isolated host galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Millennium Run simulation. Provided we use two distinct prescriptions to embed luminous galaxies within the simulated dark matter halos (ellipticals share the shapes of their halos, while disks have angular momenta that are aligned with the net angular momenta of their halos), we find a fair agreement between observation and theory. Averaged over scales r_p \le 500 kpc, the satellites of red, high-mass hosts with low star formation rates are found preferentially near the …
Elliptical galaxies are the main contributors to the chemical enrichment of the intracluster and intergalactic medium; understanding how they form and evolve enables us to get important hints on the amounts of energy and processed matter that they eject into the ICM/IGM. Recent pieces of observational evidence point to a strong connection between high redshift quasars and their host galaxies. The aim of this paper is to prove that the main aspects of the chemical evolution of the spheroids can be reproduced in the framework of a model where the shining of the quasar is intimately related to th…
We numerically investigate chemodynamical evolution of interstellar medium (ISM) in gas-rich disk-disk galaxy mergers in order to explore the origin of fundamental chemical properties of halo ISM observed in elliptical galaxies. Main results obtained in this chemodynamical study are the following three. (1) Elliptical galaxies formed by gas-rich mergers show steep negative metallicity gradients of ISM especially in the outer part of galaxies. The essential reason for this is that chemical evolution of ISM in mergers proceeds in such an inhomogeneous way that in the central part of mergers, met…
The scope of this paper is two-fold: i) to test and improve our previous models of an outside-in formation for the majority of ellipticals in the context of the SN-driven wind scenario, by means of a careful study of gas inflows/outflows; ii) to explain the observed slopes, either positive or negative, in the radial gradient of the mean stellar [alpha/Fe], and their apparent lack of any correlation with all the other observables. In order to pursue these goals we present a new class of hydrodynamical simulations for the formation of single elliptical galaxies in which we implement detailed pre…
We present the results of an optical and near-IR spectroscopic study of giant nebular emission line halos associated with three z > 3 radio galaxies, 4C 41.17, 4C 60.07 and B2 0902+34. Previous deep narrow band Ly-alpha imaging had revealed complex morphologies with sizes up to 100 kpc), possibly connected to outflows and AGN feedback from the central regions. The outer regions of these halos show quiet kinematics with typical velocity dispersions of a few hundred km/s, and velocity shears that can mostly be interpreted as being due to rotation. The inner regions show shocked cocoons of gas cl…
We present measurements of the near-infrared Calcium II triplet (CaT, CaT*), Paschen (PaT) and Magnesium (MgI) indices for a well-studied sample of 19 bulges of early to intermediate spiral galaxies. We find that both the CaT* and CaT indices decrease with central velocity dispersion (sigma) with small scatter. This dependence is similar to that recently found by Cenarro (2002) for elliptical galaxies, implying an uniform CaT* -- sigma relation that applies to galaxies from ellipticals to intermediate-type spirals. The decrease of CaT and CaT* with sigma contrasts with the well-known increase …
We analyze single-stellar-population (SSP) equivalent parameters for 50 local elliptical galaxies as a function of their structural parameters. These galaxies fill a two-dimensional plane in the four-dimensional space of [Z/H], log t, log $σ$, and [E/Fe]. SSP age and velocity dispersion can be taken as the two independent parameters that specify a galaxy's location in this ``hyperplane.'' The hyperplane can be decomposed into two sub-relations: (1) a ``Z-plane,'' in which [Z/H] is a linear function of log $σ$ and log t; and (2) a relation between [E/Fe] and $σ$ in which [E/Fe] is larger in hig…
The halos of elliptical galaxies are faint and difficult to explore, but they contain vital clues to both structure and formation. We present the results of an imaging and spectroscopic survey for planetary nebulae (PNe) in the nearby elliptical NGC 5128. We extend the work of Hui et al.(1995) well into the halo of the galaxy--out to distances of 100 and 50 kpc along the major and minor axes. We now know of 1141 PNe in NGC 5128, 780 of which are confirmed. Of these 780 PNe, 349 are new from this survey, and 148 are at radii beyond 20 kpc. PNe exist at distances up to 80 kpc (~15 r_e), showing …
We present 3-band HST imaging of three z</=0.1 compact symmetric objects (CSOs): 4C 31.04, 1946+708 and 1146+596. These objects were chosen on the basis of proximity to Earth as well as HI 21 cm absorption. The inner H-band isophotes of these galaxies are well fit by "nuker" models, typical of nearby ellipticals. Each shows a significant flattening in the isophotal profile at radii ~0.5", as well as variations in ellipticity and PA. However, neither is uncommon for elliptical galaxies. All three show modest departures from nuker models at radii of 1-5 $h_{60}^{-1}$ kpc. Each shows large, well …
The impact of the cluster environment on the evolution of dwarf galaxies is investigated by comparing the properties of a sample of dwarf irregulars (dIs) in the Virgo Cluster with a control sample of nearby ("field") dIs having oxygen abundances derived from [O III]4363 measurements and measured distances from resolved stellar constituents. Spectroscopic data are obtained for H II regions in 11 Virgo dIs distributed in the central and outer regions of the cluster. To ensure that oxygen abundances are derived in a homogeneous manner, oxygen abundances for field and Virgo dIs are computed using…
We present B-band imaging of 18 low redshift (z<0.3) BL Lac objects for which their host galaxies were previously resolved in the R-band and the near-infrared H-band. For a subset of the objects, also U- and V-band imaging is presented. These data are used to investigate the blue-red-near-infrared colours and the colour gradients of the host galaxies of BL Lacs in comparison with other elliptical galaxies with and without nuclear activity. In all cases galaxies are well represented by an elliptical model, with average absolute magnitude M_B=-21.6+-0.7 and average scale length R_e=7.6+-3.2 kpc.…
This is the third paper in a series analyzing X-ray emission from the hot interstellar medium in a sample of 54 normal elliptical galaxies observed by Chandra, focusing on 36 galaxies with sufficient signal to compute radial temperature profiles. We distinguish four qualitatively different types of profile: positive gradient (outwardly rising), negative gradients (falling), quasi-isothermal (flat) and hybrid (falling at small radii, then rising). We measure the mean logarithmic temperature gradients in two radial regions: from 0--2 $J$-band effective radii $R_J$ (excluding the central point so…
The Nuker law was designed to match the inner few (~3-10) arcseconds of predominantly nearby (< 30 Mpc) early-type galaxy light-profiles; it was never intended to describe an entire profile. The Sersic model, on the other hand, was developed to fit the entire profile; however, due to the presence of partially depleted galaxy cores, the Sersic model cannot always describe the very inner region. We have therefore developed a new empirical model consisting of an inner power-law, a transition region, and an outer Sersic model to connect the inner and outer structure of elliptical galaxies. Moreove…
NGC 205 is the nearest example of a dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxy and the prototype of this enigmatic galaxy class. Photometric evidence suggests that NGC 205, a close satellite of the M31 galaxy, is tidally interacting with its parent galaxy. We present stellar radial velocity measurements out to a projected radius of 20' (5 kpc) in NGC 205 based on Keck/DEIMOS multislit spectroscopic observations of 725 individual red giant branch stars. Our kinematic measurements extend from the center out to six times the effective radius of NGC 205, well past the expected tidal radius. The contamination in…
[Abridged] N-body simulations of collisionless collapse have offered important clues to the construction of realistic stellar dynamical models of elliptical galaxies. Understanding this idealized and relatively simple process, by which stellar systems can reach partially relaxed equilibrium configurations (characterized by isotropic central regions and radially anisotropic envelopes), is a prerequisite to more ambitious attempts at constructing physically justified models of elliptical galaxies in which the problem of galaxy formation is set in the generally accepted cosmological context of hi…
We present here the first study of the X-ray properties of an evolutionary sample of merging galaxies. Both ROSAT PSPC and HRI data are presented for a sample of eight interacting galaxy systems, each believed to involve a similar encounter between two spiral discs of approximately equal size. The mergers span a large range in age, from completely detached to fully merged systems. A great deal of interesting X-ray structure is seen, and the X-ray properties of each individual system are discussed in detail. Along the merging sequence, several trends are evident: in the case of several of the i…
We review recent developments in theoretical studies of galaxy formation and evolution. In combination with new data from HST, Keck and other large telescopes, numerical and semi-analytic modelling is beginning to build up a coherent picture of galaxy formation. We summarize the current status of modelling of various galactic properties such as the structure of dark matter halos, the galaxy luminosity function, the Tully-Fisher relation, the colour-magnitude relation for ellipticals, the gross morphological properties of galaxies and the counts of faint galaxies as a function of magnitude, red…
Recent morphological studies of galaxies by the {\it Hubble Space Telescope (HST)} have revealed that actively star-forming galaxies at intermediate and high redshifts ($z=0.5-2.0$) have very clumpy and irregular distributions of stars. It is however unclear whether and how these clumpy galaxies evolve into the present spiral and elliptical galaxies with regular shapes. We here propose that spatial distributions of AGB stars, probing the different mean age and metallicity of the underlying stellar population, can provide vital clues to the evolution of these clumpy galaxies, in particular, tho…
