Within the context of investigating possible differences between the mechanisms at play in Radio Loud AGN and those in Radio Quiet ones, we study the spectral characteristics of a selected sample of Intermediate-Luminosity Broad-Line Radio Galaxies in X-rays, optical, IR and radio. Here, we present the radio spectra acquired with the 100-m radio telescope in Effelsberg between 2.6 and 32 GHz. These measurements reveal a large variety of spectral shapes urging for radio imaging that would disclose the source morphology. Such studies could potentially discriminate between different mechanisms.
We use the combination of the 2 Ms Chandra X-ray image, new J and H band images, and the Spitzer IRAC and MIPS images of the Chandra Deep Field-North to obtain high spectroscopic and photometric redshift completeness of high and intermediate X-ray luminosity sources in the redshift interval z=2-3. We measure the number densities of z=2-3 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and broad-line AGNs in the rest-frame 2-8 keV luminosity intervals 10^44-10^45 and 10^43-10^44 ergs/s and compare with previous lower redshift results. We confirm a decline in the number densities of intermediate-luminosity source…
We present the analysis of archival data from ROSAT and ASCA of a serendipitous source PKS 2316-423. According to its featureless non-thermal radio/optical continuum, the object has been assumed as a BL Lac candidate in the literature. It was evident variable over the multiple X-ray observations. Specially, a variable high-energy tail of the synchrotron radiation is revealed. X-ray spectral analysis provided further evidence of its synchrotron-nature broad-band spectrum with steep and down-curved shape in the range of 0.1-10 keV. Further SED analysis suggest that it is a very low luminosity ``…
In this paper we present a rigorous derivation of the luminosity function (LF) in presence of a background. Our approach is free from the logical contradictions of assigning negative values to positively defined quantities and avoid the use of incorrect estimates for the 68 % confidence interval (error bar). It accounts for Poisson fluctuations ignored in previous approaches and does not requires binning of the data. The method is extensible to more complex situations, does not require the existence of an environment--independent LF, and clarifies issues common to field LF derivations. We appl…
In several nearby intermediate luminosity early-type galaxies, recent observations at large radii have shown a indications of a lack of dark matter, substantially at odds with the prediction from the CDM hierarchical merger models. Here we discuss a pilot observational project for the study of the internal kinematical and dynamical properties of this remarkable sample of galaxies. Using the VIMOS-IFU in its high spectral resolution mode, it would be possible to investigate the regions up to about 1.2 effective radii, taking advantage of the much larger field of view and telescope diameter. Thi…
We measure the rest-frame B-band luminosity function of red-sequence galaxies (RSLF) of five intermediate-redshift (0.5 < z < 0.9), high-mass (sigma > 950 km/s) clusters. Cluster galaxies are identified through photometric redshifts based on imaging in seven bands (five broad, and two narrow) using the WIYN 3.5m telescope. The luminosity functions are well-fit down to M_B^*+3 for all of the clusters out to a radius of R_200. For comparison, the luminosity functions for a sample of 59 low redshift clusters selected from the SDSS are measured as well. There is a brightening trend (M_B^* increase…
The Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope has been used to obtain deep high-resolution images of the giant early-type galaxy NGC 1316 which is an obvious merger remnant. These observations supersede previous, shallower observations which revealed the presence of a population of metal-rich globular clusters of intermediate age (~ 3 Gyr). We detect a total of 1496 cluster candidates, almost 4 times as many as from the previous WFPC2 images. We confirm the bimodality of the color distribution of clusters, even in V-I, with peak colors 0.93 and 1.06. The large number of d…
We describe a new estimate of the radio galaxy 1.4 GHz luminosity function and its evolution at intermediate redshifts (z~0.4). Photometric redshifts and color selection have been used to select Bj<23.5 early-type galaxies from the Panoramic Deep Fields, a multicolor survey of two 25 sq deg fields. Approximately 230 radio galaxies have then been selected by matching early-type galaxies with NVSS radio sources brighter than 5 mJy. Estimates of the 1.4 GHz luminosity function of radio galaxies measure significant evolution over the observed redshift range. For an Omega_M=1 cosmology the evolutio…
We compare pure luminosity evolution (PLE) models with recent data at low and high redshift. These models assume that massive galaxies were assembled and formed most of their stars at high redshift (z > 3) and have evolved without merging or substantial dust obscuration since then. Our models span the full range of plausible metallicities, initial mass functions (IMF's) and star formation histories. We require them to reproduce the abundance of galaxies by colour and luminosity in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and we investigate whether they can simultaneously fit (i) the observed galaxy counts…
We present results of an analysis of broadband spectra of 14 intermediate polars obtained with the RXTE observatory (PCA and HEXTE spectrometers, 3-100 keV). By means of our calculations of the structure and the emergent spectrum of the post-shock region of intermediate polars we fitted the observed spectra and obtained estimates of the white dwarf masses. The estimated masses are compared with masses obtained by other authors.
A number of studies have shown that the visibility of scattered broad emission lines in Seyfert 2 galaxies is strongly dependent on the IRAS f_60/f_25 flux ratio, where those Seyfert 2s with `warm' IRAS colours show polarised broad line emission. It is now clear that this effect is due to the increasing dominance of the galactic rather than the AGN emission at 60um in less luminous `cool' Seyfert 2s. However, we present evidence that the 25um emission is a good measure of the AGN luminosity for most Seyfert 2s. Using this result, we show that the visibility of scattered broad line emission has…
We present high S/N spectra of the H-beta region in 17 intermediate redshift (0.85 le z le 2.5) quasars. The spectra represent first results of our campaign to test the redshift/luminosity robustness of the so-called Eigenvector 1 (E1) parameter space as developed for low redshift AGN in Sulentic et al. (2000). The new quasars span the luminosity range -26 ge M_B ge -29 while most of our low redshift sample (n=215) involve sources in the range -19 ge M_B ge -26. The high redshift sources show E1 parameter values and domain occupation that are similar to our low redshift sample supporting earli…
We present the gas-phase oxygen abundance (O/H) for a sample of 131 star-forming galaxies at intermediate redshifts ($0.2<z<1.0$). The sample selection, the spectroscopic observations (mainly with VLT/FORS) and associated data reduction, the photometric properties, the emission-line measurements, and the spectral classification are fully described in a companion paper (Paper I). We use two methods to estimate the O/H abundance ratio: the {} "standard" $R\_{\mathrm{23}}$ method which is based on empirical calibrations, and the CL01 method which is based on grids of photo-ionization models and o…
We analyze a population of intermediate-redshift (z ~ 0.05-0.3), off-nuclear X-ray sources located within optically-bright galaxies in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) and Galaxy Evolution from Morphology and SEDs (GEMS) fields. A total of 24 off-nuclear source candidates are classified using deep Chandra exposures from the Chandra Deep Field-North, Chandra Deep Field-South, and Extended Chandra Deep Field-South; 15 of these are newly identified. These sources have average X-ray spectral shapes and optical environments similar to those observed for off-nuclear intermediate-l…
We take the established relation between black hole mass, X-ray luminosity, and radio luminosity and show that intermediate mass black holes, such as those predicted to exist at the centers of globular clusters, will be easily identifiable objects in deep radio observations. We show that the radio observations will be far more senstive than any possible X-ray observations. We also discuss the likely optical photometric and spectroscopic appearance of such systems in the event that radio detections are made.
We study properties of the host galaxies of 15 hard X-ray selected type-2 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at intermediate redshifts (0.05$<z<$0.6) detected in $ASCA$ surveys. The absorption corrected hard X-ray luminosities $L_{\rm 2-10 keV}$ range from 10$^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$ to $10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We took the $R$-band image of these AGNs with the University of Hawaii 2.2 m telescope. Thanks to the intrinsic obscuration of nuclear light, we can decompose the galaxies with a spheroid component and a disk component. The resulting spheroid luminosities correlate with $L_{\rm 2-10 keV}$; higher …
AGN masses can be estimated by "single epoch" spectral measurements through a mass-luminosity- linewidth relation calibrated by echo mapping measurements of a reference sample of low redshift ($z < 0.3$) and low luminosity ($M_B > -26$) AGNs. To analyze the possible dependence of this relation on luminosity we selected a sample of bright, intermediate redhift ($z \sim 1$) objects and we started a spectrophotometric monitoring campaign with a typical sampling time of about one month. Variability observations of lines with shorter wavelength than H$_β$ will also provide new information on the st…
It has been shown that the luminosity of AGNs and the size of their broad line region obey a simple relation of the type R=a L^g, from faint Seyfert nuclei to bright quasars, allowing single-epoch determination of the central black hole mass M=b L^g D^2 from their luminosity L and width of H_beta emission line. Adopting this mass determination for cosmological studies requires the extrapolation to high z and L of a relation whose calibration relies so far on reverberation mapping measurements performed for L<10^46 erg/s and z<0.4. We initiated a campaign for the monitoring of a few luminous, i…
We report on a systematic investigation of the Hbeta and Fe II emission lines in a sample of 568 quasars within z < 0.8 selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The conventional broad Hbeta emission line can be decomposed into two components--one with intermediate velocity width and another with very broad width. The velocity shift and equivalent width of the intermediate-width component do not correlate with those of the very broad component of Hbeta, but its velocity shift and width do resemble Fe II. Moreover, the width of the very broad component is roughly 2.5 times that of the interme…
ROSAT, and now Chandra, X-ray images allow studies of extranuclear X-ray point sources in galaxies other than our own. X-ray observations of normal galaxies with ROSAT and Chandra have revealed that off-nuclear, compact, Intermediate-luminosity (Lx[2-10 keV] >= 1e39 erg/s) X-ray Objects (IXOs, a.k.a. ULXs [Ultraluminous X-ray sources]) are quite common. Here we present a catalog and finding charts for 87 IXOs in 54 galaxies, derived from all of the ROSAT HRI imaging data for galaxies with cz <= 5000 km/s from the Third Reference Catalog of Bright Galaxies (RC3). We have defined the cutoff Lx f…
We investigate bulge and disk scaling relations using a volume-corrected sample of early- to intermediate-type disk galaxies in which, importantly, the biasing flux from additional nuclear components has been modeled and removed. Structural parameters are obtained from a seeing-convolved, bulge+disk+nuclear-component decomposition applied to near-infrared surface brightness profiles spanning ~10 pc to the outer disk. Bulge and disk parameters, and bulge-to-disk ratios, are analyzed as a function of bulge luminosity, disk luminosity, galaxy central velocity dispersion, and galaxy Hubble type. M…
In order to determine whether unified models of active galactic nuclei apply to low-luminosity objects, we have undertaken a spectropolarimetric survey of of LINERs and Seyfert nuclei at the Keck Observatory. The 14 objects observed have a median H-alpha luminosity of 8x10^{39} erg/s, well below the typical value of ~10^{41} erg/s for Markarian Seyfert nuclei. Polarized broad H-alpha emission is detected in three LINERs: NGC 315, NGC 1052, and NGC 4261. Each of these is an elliptical galaxy with a double-sided radio jet, and the emission-line polarization in each case is oriented roughly perpe…
We present the first clustering results of X-ray selected AGN at z~3. Using Chandra X-ray imaging and UVR optical colors from MUSYC photometry in the ECDF-S field, we selected a sample of 58 z~3 AGN candidates. From the optical data we also selected 1385 LBG at 2.8<z< 3.8 with R<25.5. We performed auto-correlation and cross-correlation analyses, and here we present results for the clustering amplitudes and dark matter halo masses of each sample. For the LBG we find a correlation length of r_0,LBG = 6.7 +/- 0.5 Mpc, implying a bias value of 3.5 +/- 0.3 and dark matter (DM) halo masses of log(Mm…
To test the idea that ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) in external galaxies represent a class of accreting intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs), we have undertaken a program to identify ULXs and a lower luminosity X-ray comparison sample with the highest quality data in the {\it Chandra} archive. We establish as a general property of ULXs that the most X-ray-luminous objects possess the flattest X-ray spectra (in the {\it Chandra} bandpass). No prior sample studies have established the general hardening of ULX spectra with luminosity. This hardening occurs at the highest luminosities (absor…
AIMS. While observational evidence shows that most of the decline in a star's X-ray activity occurs between the age of the Hyades (~8 x 10^8 yrs) and that of the Sun, very little is known about the evolution of stellar activity between these ages. To gain information on the typical level of coronal activity at a star's intermediate age, we studied the X-ray emission from stars in the 1.9 Gyr old open cluster NGC 752. METHODS. We analysed a ~140 ks Chandra observation of NGC 752 and a ~50 ks XMM-Newton observation of the same cluster. We detected 262 X-ray sources in the Chandra data and 145 so…
The WFPC2 Camera on board HST has been used to obtain high-resolution images of NGC 3610, a dynamically young elliptical galaxy. These observations supersede shorter, undithered HST observations where an intermediate-age population of globular clusters was first discovered. The new observations show the bimodal color distribution of globular clusters more clearly, with peaks at (V-I)o = 0.95 and 1.17. The luminosity function (LF) of the blue, metal-poor population of clusters in NGC 3610 turns over, consistent with a Gaussian distribution with a peak Mv ~= -7.0, similar to old globular-cluster…
While many observed ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs, Lx > 10^39 erg s^-1) could be extragalactic X-ray binaries (XRBs) emitting close to the Eddington limit, the highest-luminosity ULXs (Lx > 3x10^39 erg s^-1) exceed the isotropic Eddington luminosity for even high-stellar-mass accreting black hole XRBs. It has been suggested that these highest-luminosity ULXs may contain accreting intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) binaries. We consider this hypothesis for dense, young (about 100 Myr) stellar clusters where we assume that a 50-500 solar mass central IMBH has formed through runaway growth …
(Abridged) Using an empirical relation between the broad line region size and optical continuum luminosity, we estimated the black hole mass and accretion rate for 135 AGNs with double-peaked broad emission lines in two samples. With black hole masses from $3\times 10^7M_\odot$ to $5\times 10^9M_\odot$, these AGNs have the dimensionless accretion rates (Eddington ratios) between 0.001 and 0.1, and the bolometric luminosity between $10^{43}erg/s$ and $10^{46}erg/s$, both being significantly larger than those of several previously known low-luminosity double-peaked AGNs. The optical-X-ray spectr…
We present the results of near-infrared H-band (1.65 microns) imaging of 19 steep spectrum radio quasars (SSRQ) in the redshift range 0.5 < z < 1.0. This sample of SSRQs is matched with our previously studied complete sample of 20 flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQ) with respect to redshift and optical and radio luminosity. We are able to clearly detect the host galaxy in 10 (53 %) SSRQs and marginally in 6 (32 %) others, while the host remains unresolved in 3 (16 %) SSRQs. The galaxies hosting the SSRQs are large (average bulge scale-length R(e) = 9.0+-1.7 kpc) and luminous (average M(H) = -27…
The cosmological expansion cannot produce the reported correlations of the gamma-ray burst timescale and spectral energy with peak flux if the burst model reproduces the BATSE 3B peak-flux distribution for a non-evolving burst source density. Power law luminosity distribution models proportional to L^{-beta} produce acceptables fits to the data for most values of the spectral parameters when beta < 1.6. In this model, gamma-ray bursts of a given peak flux have a distribution of redshifts, with a maximum redshift of > 3 for peak fluxes near the BATSE threshold, and with an average redshift of <…
Redshift evolution of supermassive black hole mass functions (BHMFs) is investigated up to z ~ 1. BHMFs at intermediate redshifts are calculated in two ways. One way is from early-type galaxy luminosity functions (LFs); we assume an M_BH - L_sph correlation at a redshift by considering a passive evolution of L_sph in the local relationship. The resultant BHMFs (spheroid-BHMFs) from LFs of red sequence galaxies indicates a slight decrease of number density with increasing redshift at M_BH > 10^{7.5-8} M_solar. Since a redshift evolution in slope and zeropoint of the M_BH - L_sph relation is unl…
We reinvestigate the relationship between the characteristic broad-line region size (R_blr) and the Balmer emission-line, X-ray, UV, and optical continuum luminosities. Our study makes use of the best available determinations of R_blr for a large number of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from Peterson et al. Using their determinations of R_blr for a large sample of AGNs and two different regression methods, we investigate the robustness of our correlation results as a function of data sub-sample and regression technique. Though small systematic differences were found depending on the method of a…
We present H and K photometry of 42,000 stars in an area of 250 arcmin$^{2}$ centered on the Galactic center. We use the photometry to construct a dereddened K band luminosity function (LF) for this region, excluding the excessively crowded inner 2' of the Galaxy. This LF is intermediate between the LF of Baade's window and the LF of inner 2' of the Galactic center. We speculate that the bright stars in this region have an age which is intermediate between the starburst population in the Galactic center and the old bulge population. We present the coordinates and mags for 16 stars with K_{0} <…
The dynamics of stars in the inner regions of nearby globular clusters (GCs) such as G1 indicate the presence of central concentrated dark masses, and one would like to know whether these are indeed intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs). As the number of surrounding stars, and their motions, are roughly known, the capture rate can be estimated; the question then arises of whether the apparent quiescence of the nuclei of these GCs is compatible with the IMBH's presence. The role of debris from disrupted stars in activating quiescent nuclei of GCs is studied here employing three-dimensional hydr…
We describe results from a new ground-based monitoring campaign on NGC 5548, the best studied reverberation-mapped AGN. We find that it was in the lowest luminosity state yet recorded during a monitoring program, namely L(5100) = 4.7 x 10^42 ergs s^-1. We determine a rest-frame time lag between flux variations in the continuum and the Hbeta line of 6.3 (+2.6/-2.3) days. Combining our measurements with those of previous campaigns, we determine a weighted black hole mass of M_BH = 6.54 (+0.26/-0.25) x 10^7 M_sun based on all broad emission lines with suitable variability data. We confirm the pre…
[Abridged] We present new VLT ISAAC spectra for 30 quasars, which we combine with previous data to yield a sample of 53 intermediate redshift (z ~ 0.9 - 3.0) sources. The sample is used to explore properties of prominent lines in the Hbeta spectral region of these very luminous quasars. We find two major trends: (1) a systematic increase of minimum FWHM Hbeta with luminosity (discussed in a previous paper). This lower FWHM envelope is best fit assuming that the narrowest sources radiate near the Eddington limit, show line emission from a virialized cloud distribution, and obey a well defined b…
Using a large sample of 90 Seyfert 2 galaxies (Sy2s) with spectropolarimetric observations, we tested the suggestion that the presence of hidden broad-line regions (HBLRs) in Sy2s is dependent upon the Eddington ratio. The stellar velocity dispersion and the extinction-corrected $\OIII$ luminosity are used to derive the mass of central super-massive black holes and the Eddington ratio. We found that: (1) below the Eddington ratio threshold of $10^{-1.37}$, all but one object belong to non-HBLRs Sy2s; while at higher Eddington ratio, there is no obvious discrimination in the Eddington ratio and…
We discuss the prospects for detecting faint intermediate-mass black holes, such as those predicted to exist in the cores of globular clusters and dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We briefly summarize the difficulties of stellar dynamical searches, then show that recently discovered relations between black hole mass, X-ray luminosity and radio luminosity imply that in most cases, these black holes should be more easily detected in the radio than in the X-rays. Finally, we show upper limits from some radio observations of globular clusters, and discuss the possibility that the radio source in the cor…
We present recent X-ray observations of intermediate BL Lac objects (IBLs), i.e. BL Lacs which are located between high-energy and low-energy peaked BL Lac objects with respect to alpha_rx. We briefly discuss the statistical properties of IBLs from the RGB sample and then focus on a detailed broad band spectral analysis of two objects, namely 1424+2401 and 1055+5644, which were observed with ASCA and SAX, respectively. In both cases the spectra are steep and we find significant curvature in 1424+2401 in the sense that the spectrum gets flatter at both low (< 1 keV) and high energies (> 5 keV).…
We have conducted a systematic search of AGNs with IMBHs from the SDSS DR4. As results we found 245 candidates of broad-line AGN with M_{BH}<10^6 \Msun estimated from the luminosity and width of the broad Halpha component. Compared to the pioneer Greene & Ho (2004) sample of 19 IMBH AGNs, our sample has improved in covering a larger range of the Eddington ratio, as well as black hole mass and redshift, taking the advantage of our AGN-galaxy spectral decomposition algorithm. Among these, thirty-six have L_{bol}/L_{Edd} < 0.1, hinting that a significant fraction of IMBHs might exist with weak or…
We propose that the scatter in line width versus luminosity of the BLR of AGN arises from a dependence on the line of sight to an axially symmetric BLR. Adopting a simple model for the line width as a function of luminosity and angle, and convolving this with the observed luminosity function, allows us to predict a line width distribution consistent with the available data. Furthermore, we use the relation between the equivalent width of a line and the luminosity in the continuum to predict an observed correlation between line width and equivalent width. The scatter on this correlation is agai…
Broad Fe K-alpha emission lines have recently been reported in a number of Galactic black holes. Such lines are useful accretion flow diagnostics because they may be produced at the inner accretion disk and shaped by relativistic effects, but in general they have only been observed at luminosities of L_X ~ 10^(37-38) erg/s in soft X-rays. The Galactic microquasar V4641 Sgr -- widely known for its 12.2 Crab (1.5-12 keV) outburst in 1999 September -- displayed low-level activity in 1999 March. BeppoSAX observed the source in this state and Fe K-alpha line emission was found (in 't Zand et al. 20…
Galaxy evolution during the last 9 Gyr is discussed. It can be traced back from well known present-day galaxies or directly observed for galaxies at different look back times. This requires clear and consistently matched selection criteria for galaxy samples. There is a net decrease of rest-frame, UV luminosity density, at least since z = 1. It is interpreted as an important decline of the star formation since the last ~9 Gyr. A similar trend is found for the evolution of the IR luminosity density which accounts for heavily extincted starbursts. Interestingly the global star formation density,…
A two-components model for Broad Line Region (BLR) of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) has been suggested for many years but not widely accepted (e.g., Hu et al. 2008; Sulentic et al. 2000; Brotherton et al. 1996; Mason et al. 1996). This model indicates that the broad line can be described with superposition of two Gaussian components (Very Broad Gaussian Component (VBGC) and InterMediate Gaussian Component (IMGC)) which are from two physically distinct regions; i.e., Very Broad Line Region (VBLR) and InterMediate Line Region (IMLR). We select a SDSS sample to further confirm this model and give …
We report the results of Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of a new outburst of an ultraluminous supersoft X-ray source in M101. CXOU J140332.3+542103 was observed in a low luminosity state (L_x~1e37 erg/s) between 2004 January and May. The low-state X-ray spectra were relatively hard; the combined low state spectrum can be fitted with a combination of a power-law with photon index of 1.4 and a blackbody of 63 eV. During 2004 July, the source underwent a strong outburst and the peak 0.3-7 keV luminosity reached 3e40 erg/s, with a bolometric luminosity of about 1e41 erg/s. The outburst spectr…
The origin and nature of Ultra-Luminous X-ray sources (ULXs) is a contentious and controversial topic. There are ongoing debates about the masses of the objects responsible, their sources of mass for accretion, and their relation to stellar populations in galaxies. A new picture of these objects is proposed in which they are intermediate-mass black holes confined to the disks of their host galaxies and accreting from the interstellar medium. They are then preferentially found in or near molecular clouds. This model correctly predicts the shape of the observed luminosity function and requires o…
Charge transfer (or exchange) reactions between hydrogen atoms and protons in collisionless shocks of supernova remnants (SNRs) are a natural way of producing broad Balmer, Lyman and other lines of hydrogen. We wish to quantify the importance of shock-induced, non-thermal hydrogen emission from SNRs in young galaxies. We present a method to estimate the luminosity of broad ($\sim 1000$ km s$^{-1}$) Ly$α$, Ly$β$, Ly$γ$, H$β$ and P$α$ lines, as well as the broad and narrow luminosities of the two-photon (2$γ$) continuum, from existing measurements of the H$α$ flux. The expected broad Ly$α$ lumin…
In this article, we demonstrate that PKSJ 1037-2705 has a weak accretion flow luminosity, well below the Seyfert1/QSO dividing line, weak broad emission lines (BELs) and moderately powerful FRII extended radio emission. It is one of the few documented examples of a broad-line object in which the time averaged jet kinetic luminosity, $\bar{Q}$, is larger than the total thermal luminosity (IR to X-ray) of the accretion flow, $L_{bol}$. The blazar nucleus dominates the optical and near ultraviolet emission and is a strong source of hard X-rays. The strong blazar emission indicates that the relati…
We present a systematic X-ray study of eight AGNs with intermediate mass black holes (M_BH 8-95x10^4 Msun) based on 12 XMM-Newton observations. The sample includes the two prototype AGNs in this class - NGC4395 and POX52 and six other AGNs discovered with the SDSS. These AGNs show some of the strongest X-ray variability with the normalized excess variances being the largest and the power density break time scales being the shortest observed among radio-quiet AGNs. The excess variance -- luminosity correlation appears to depend on both the BH mass and the Eddington luminosity ratio. The break t…
We present new hard X-ray spectra of three radio-loud AGNs of moderately high X-ray luminosity (L_x ~ 10^45 erg/s; PKS 2349-01, 3C 323.1, and 4C 74.26) obtained with ASCA and BeppoSAX. The X-ray continua are described in all three cases with a power law model with photon indices of Gamma~1.85, modified at low energies by absorption in excess of the Galactic, which appears to be due to neutral gas. At higher energies, an Fe Ka emission line is detected in PKS 2349-01 and 4C 74.26, and is tentatively detected in 3C 323.1. The equivalent widths of the lines are consistent, albeit within large unc…
I report on a sample of new type I X-ray bursters, firstly detected with the Wide Field Cameras on board BeppoSAX and then studied with the Narrow Field Instruments on a broad spectral range (0.1-200 keV). Properties of the transient/persistent emission are summarized and the broad band X-ray spectra discussed in detail for a few sources.
The transition between the low density groups of T Tauri stars and the high density clusters around massive stars occurs in the intermediate-mass (IM) range (M$_*$$\sim$2--8 M$_\odot$). High spatial resolution studies of IM young stellar objects (YSO) can provide important clues to understand the clustering in massive star forming regions. Aims: Our aim is to search for clustering in IM Class 0 protostars. The high spatial resolution and sensitivity provided by the new A configuration of the Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) allow us to study the clustering in these nearby objects. Methods…
The `Bloated Stars Scenario' proposes that AGN broad line emission originates in the winds or envelopes of bloated stars (BS). Alexander and Netzer (1994, 1996) established that ~ 5e4 BSs with dense, decelerating winds can reproduce the observed emission line spectrum and line profiles while avoiding rapid collisional destruction. Here, I investigate a third prediction of the model, related to the size of the broad line region, by deriving the emission line response to variations in the ionizing continuum (`line reverberation') and comparing it to observations. The expected time lags, as well …
We describe a new sample of Seyfert nuclei discovered during the course of an optical spectroscopic survey of nearby galaxies. The majority of the objects, many recognized for the first time, have luminosities much lower than those of classical Seyferts and populate the faint end of the AGN luminosity function. A significant fraction of the nuclei emit broad H-alpha emission qualitatively similar to the broad lines seen in classical Seyfert 1 nuclei and QSOs.
Deep hard X-ray and near infrared observations of a type-2 radio-quiet QSO candidate at z=0.9, AXJ08494+4454, are reported. The 0.5-10keV Chandra X-ray Observatory spectrum of AXJ08494+4454 is hard, and is explained well with a power-law continuum absorbed by a hydrogen column density of 2x10^23 cm^-2. The 2-10keV luminosity of the object reaches hard X-ray luminosity of QSOs. The large X-ray absorption and the large intrinsic luminosity support the original identification of AXJ08494+4454 as a type-2 radio-quiet QSO. Nevertheless, the deep Subaru/IRCS J-band spectroscopic observation suggests…
Using a complete, magnitude-limited sample of active galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) we show that the fraction of broad-line (Type 1) active galactic nuclei increases with luminosity of the isotropically-emitted [O III] narrow emission line. Our results are quantitatively in agreement with, and far less uncertain than, similar trends found from studies of X-ray and radio-selected active galaxies. While the correlation between broad-line fraction and luminosity is qualitatively consistent with the receding torus model, its slope is shallower and we therefore propose a modifica…
The nuclei of a wide class of active galaxies emit broad emission lines with widths at half maximum (FWHM) in the range $10^{3}-10^{4}$ km s$^{-1}$. This spread of widths is not solely a consequence of the range of the luminosities of these sources since a plot of width versus luminosity shows a large scatter. We propose that the broad line emission region (BLR) is axially symmetric and that this scatter in line width arises from an additional dependence on the angle of the line of sight to the axis of the emission region. Such a relation is natural in unified models of active nuclei which lin…
This third paper in a series about the dwarf galaxy populations in groups within the Local Supercluster concerns the intermediate mass (2.1 x 10^13 solar) NGC 5353/4 Group with a core dominated by S0 systems and a periphery of mostly spiral systems. Dwarf galaxies are strongly concentrated toward the core. The mass to light ratio M/L_R=105 in solar units is a factor 3 lower than for the two groups studied earlier in the series. The properties of the group suggest it is much less dynamically evolved than those two groups of early type galaxies. By comparison, the NGC 5353/4 Group lacks superlum…
We have computed the time evolution of bolometric, far-infrared, Halpha line, ultraviolet (both intrinsic and escaping the star forming region) and the nonthermal radio continuum luminosities for continuous and constant star formation. The luminosity rises to a plateau value and declines after the termination of starburst, but only gradually. The time evolution profiles are broad and different for different star formation indicators. The broad profiles lead to uncertainties in the star formation rate derived depending on the initial mass function, duration of starburst, its distribution and th…
As the most extreme members of the rapidly evolving faint blue galaxy population at intermediate redshift, the compact narrow emission line galaxies (CNELGs) are intrinsically luminous (-22 < M_B < -18) with narrow emission linewidths (30 < σ< 125 km/s). Their nature is heavily debated: they may be low-mass starbursting galaxies that will fade to present-day dwarf galaxies or bursts of star formation temporarily dominating the flux of more massive galaxies, possibly related to in situ bulge formation or the formation of cores of galaxies. We present deep, high-quality (~0.6 - 0.8 arcsec) image…
The color-magnitude diagrams of the open clusters NGC 2420 and NGC 2506 have been investigated as intermediate links between the solar neighborhood and the Magellanic Clouds. Two sets of theoretical isochrones which include convective overshoot are zeroed to the sun at solar abundance and to the unevolved main sequence dwarfs of the Hipparcos catalog at [Fe/H] = -0.4, requiring a differential of 0.4 mag between the unevolved main sequences at a given color. Adopting E(B-V) = 0.04 and [Fe/H] = -0.39 for NGC 2506 and 0.04 and -0.29 for NGC 2420,the respective apparent moduli are 12.70 and 12.15,…
