A two-components model for Broad Line Region (BLR) of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) has been suggested for many years but not widely accepted (e.g., Hu et al. 2008; Sulentic et al. 2000; Brotherton et al. 1996; Mason et al. 1996). This model indicates that the broad line can be described with superposition of two Gaussian components (Very Broad Gaussian Component (VBGC) and InterMediate Gaussian Component (IMGC)) which are from two physically distinct regions; i.e., Very Broad Line Region (VBLR) and InterMediate Line Region (IMLR). We select a SDSS sample to further confirm this model and give detailed analysis to the geometry, density and evolution of these two regions. Micro-lensing result of BLR in J1131-1231 and some unexplained phenomena in Reverberation Mapping (RM) experiment provide supportive evidence for this model. Our results indicate that the radius obtained from the emission line RM normally corresponds to the radius of the VBLR, and the existence of the IMGC may affect the measurement of the black hole masses in AGNs. The deviation of NLS1s from the M-sigma relation and the Type II AGN fraction as a function of luminosity can be explained in this model in a coherent way. The evolution of the two emission regions may be related to the evolutionary stages of the broad line regions of AGNs from NLS1s to BLS1s. Based on the results presented here, a unified picture of hierarchical evolution of black hole, dust torus and galaxy is proposed.
We propose a new diagnostic of the ``dusty torus'' model for Seyfert nuclei. Dust grains in the torus are heated by the nuclear continuum, and reradiate mostly in the mid-infrared wavelengths. From the torus geometry, it is predicted that the emission at lambda < 10 micron has strong dependence on the viewing angle. Since the dependence is predicted to be insignificant at lambda > 10 micron, we study the flux ratio between 3.5 micron (L band) and 25 micron; R(L,25) = log [(nu_3.5 um S_nu_3.5 um)/(nu_25 um S_nu_25 um)]. In three different samples (optically selected, X-ray selected, and infrare…
The presence of an obscuring torus around the nucleus of Seyfert galaxies, as supposed in the popular unification scheme, can strongly modify the X--ray spectrum for both type 1 and 2 Seyfert galaxies. We find that if the torus is Compton thick, it can scatter at small angles a significant fraction of the nuclear radiation, and contribute to the continuum of Seyfert 1 galaxies above $\sim$10 keV, and to the fluorescence iron line at 6.4 keV. At large inclination angles and for large torus column densities, the spectrum is attenuated by photoabsorption and Compton scattering, while the iron flu…
A number of studies have shown that the visibility of scattered broad emission lines in Seyfert 2 galaxies is strongly dependent on the IRAS f_60/f_25 flux ratio, where those Seyfert 2s with `warm' IRAS colours show polarised broad line emission. It is now clear that this effect is due to the increasing dominance of the galactic rather than the AGN emission at 60um in less luminous `cool' Seyfert 2s. However, we present evidence that the 25um emission is a good measure of the AGN luminosity for most Seyfert 2s. Using this result, we show that the visibility of scattered broad line emission has…
We report on observations of the narrow line Seyfert galaxy NGC 5506 with the Rossi X-ray TIming Explorer. The observations cover a time interval of ~1000 days during which the source showed strong flux and spectral variability. The spectrum clearly shows iron fluorescence emission at 6.4 keV and significant reflection features. Both the equivalent width of the iron line and the relative strength of the reflected continuum are higher during low flux states. The variability of the reflection features can be explained by the presence of two reflected components: one that responds rapidly to flux…
We use the radio axis as an indicator of the orientation of the obscuring torus in Seyfert galaxies, and analyze the difference between the position angles of extended radio structures and host galaxy major axis of Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 galaxies. We find that Seyfert 1's are less likely to have extended radio structures along the host galaxy major axis, while Seyfert 2's have these structures distributed in most directions. We also find a zone of avoidance in the distribution of position angles; both Seyfert 1's and Seyfert 2's seem to avoid close alignment between the radio axis and the hos…
Observations at ultraviolet, optical and near-infrared wavelengths have shown the existence of recent star formation in the nuclear regions of Seyfert 2 (Sy2) galaxies that suggest a connection between the Starburst and the Seyfert phenomenon. According with the standard unified models of AGN circumnuclear starbursts also have to be present (and in the same numbers) in Sy1 as in Sy2 galaxies. This review discuss evidence in favor of the Starburst-AGN connection, as well as possible differences in terms of star formation activity between Sy1 and Sy2, that suggest an alternative interpretation o…
We have studied the relationship between the high- and low-ionization [O IV] lambda 25.89 micron, [Ne III] lambda 15.56 micron and [Ne II] lambda 12.81 micron emission lines with the aim of constraining the active galactic nuclei (AGN) and star formation contributions for a sample of 103 Seyfert galaxies. We used the [O IV] and [Ne II] emission as tracers for the AGN power and star formation to investigate the ionization state of the emission-line gas. We find that Seyfert 2 galaxies have, on average, lower [O IV]/[Ne II] ratios than those of Seyfert 1 galaxies. This result suggests two possib…
We use a complete AGN sample (Ho et al. 1997) to study the environment of Seyferts, LINERs and HII galaxies. For each AGN we search for companions in the UZC redshift catalogue and compute local as well as large scale neighbour density and distance to the nearest neighbour. We find that on small scale (~ 0.2 h^-1 Mpc) LINERs exhibit denser environments than Seyferts and HII galaxies at 3 sigma significance level. The same result is not confirmed when densities are computed on large scales. LINERs also exhibit closer nearest neighbours than Seyferts and HII galaxies (at 2 sigma c.l.). However, …
Near-infrared $JHK'$ imaging photometry was obtained of 331 AGNs consisting mainly of Seyfert 1 AGNs and quasars (QSOs). This sample was selected to cover a range of radio emission strength, redshift from $z=0$ to 1, and absolute $B$-magnitude from $M_B=-29$ mag to -18 mag. Among low-$z$ AGNs with $z<0.3$, Seyfert $1-1.5$ AGNs are distributed over a region from a location typical of ``galaxies'' to a location typical of ``QSOs'' in the two-color $J-H$ to $H-K'$ diagram, but Seyfert $1.8-2$ AGNs are distributed around the location of ``galaxies''. Moreover, bright AGNs with respect to absolute …
We investigated the correlation between nuclear/circumnuclear starbursts around the active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and the AGN activities for 43 Seyfert galaxies in the CfA and 12 micron samples. We found that circumnuclear starburst luminosity as well as nuclear starburst luminosity are positively correlated with AGN luminosity. Moreover, nuclear starburst luminosity is more strongly correlated with the AGN luminosity normalized with AGN Eddington luminosity than is circumnuclear starburst luminosity. This implies that starbursts nearer the AGN could have a greater effect on AGN mass accretion…
Geometrical and physical properties of dusty tori of Seyfert nuclei probed by the water vapor maser emission at 22 GHz are discussed. We assume that the dusty torus has a simple cylindrical form and the maser emission can be detected only when we observe the torus from almost edge-on views. The observed low frequency of occurrence of the water vapor maser emission (less than 10 percent) suggests that the torus is a vertically thin cylinder whose outer radius between a few pc and ~ 10 pc. However, the observed masing regions are concentrated in the inner 1 pc regions of the torus. This property…
We present soft X-ray results from observations with the Chandra HETGS of the Seyfert I AGN NGC 4593 and Mrk 509. We discuss the photoionized outflows associated with Seyfert I AGN in terms of their absorption spectral signatures and discuss their kinematics, column density and ionization state. We discuss the link between UV and X-ray absorbers in Mrk 509 (which was simultaneously observed with Chandra and HST/STIS. We also briefly discuss the possibility of absorption due to neutral Fe embedded in the warm absorber of NGC 4593 versus an interpretation of the data in terms soft X-ray relativi…
A new BeppoSAX broad-band (0.6-150 keV) spectrum of the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mkn 3 is presented. The spectrum provides a direct measurement of a large, neutral column of gas with Nh~10**24 cm**-2 in the source direction. The source, as bright as 3C 273 above 10 keV, has a steep (Gamma~1.8) spectrum without any evidence of a high-energy cutoff up to at least 150 keV. At lower energies, the data are best modeled with the addition of an unabsorbed reflection component. Combining these data with previous Ginga and ASCA observations, the Fe K$_α$ and reflection continuum indicate that the reprocessed e…
We analyze the $2-10$~keV X-ray emission of complete samples of AGN and galaxies selected at 12$μ$m and recently compiled by Rush, Malkan \& Spinoglio (1993). As a necessary complement we also study the IR emissivity of the largest sample of hard X--ray selected AGN (Grossan 1992). Our purposes are to probe the unified scheme of active nuclei and to evaluate the local X--ray volume emissivity of low luminosity and `hidden' AGN. We confirm that X-ray emission is basically restricted to AGN, Seyfert 1's being much more powerful emitters than Seyfert 2's. We find no signal of X-ray emission for t…
We report on infrared K- (2-2.5 micron) and L-band (2.8-4.1 micron) slit spectroscopy of 23 Seyfert 1 galaxies in the CfA and 12 micron samples. A polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission feature at 3.3 micron in the L band is primarily used to investigate nuclear star-forming activity in these galaxies. The 3.3 micron PAH emission is detected in 10 sources (=43%), demonstrating that detection of nuclear star-formation in a significant fraction of Seyfert 1 galaxies is now feasible. For the PAH-detected nuclei, the surface brightness values of the PAH emission are as high as those of typ…
We present the first INTEGRAL AGN catalog, based on observations performed from launch of the mission in October 2002 until January 2004. The catalog includes 42 AGN, of which 10 are Seyfert 1, 17 are Seyfert 2, and 9 are intermediate Seyfert 1.5. The fraction of blazars is rather small with 5 detected objects, and only one galaxy cluster and no star-burst galaxies have been detected so far. A complete subset consists of 32 AGN with a significance limit of 7 sigma in the INTEGRAL/ISGRI 20-40 keV data. Although the sample is not flux limited, the distribution of sources shows a ratio of obscure…
Far-infrared flux densities are newly extracted from the IRAS database for the RSA and CfA complete samples of Seyfert galaxies. These data are used to classify the Seyfert galaxies into those where the far-infrared continuum emission is dominated by the active galactic nucleus (AGN), circumnuclear starburst, or host galaxy. While AGN-dominant objects consist of comparable numbers of Seyfert 1 and 2 galaxies, starburst- and host-dominant objects consist preferentially of Seyfert 2 galaxies. Thus, in addition to the dusty torus, the circumnuclear starburst region and host galaxy are important i…
Detailed modeling of the different regions of NGC 7130 is presented, accounting for its composite nature of AGN and starburst galaxy. Shock waves, created by stellar winds from hot massive stars and by supernova ejecta, are evident in the continuum and line spectra emitted from the clouds. The AGN starburst connection is discussed on the basis of model results, considering in particular the distribution of densities and velocities throughout the galaxy.
We present a simple population synthesis scheme which recognizes composite starburst+Seyfert 2 nuclei from a few easy-to-obtain optical measurements. Composite systems seem to evolve towards less luminous Seyfert 2's which do not harbor detectable circum-nuclear starbursts. We encourage applications of this cheap diagnostic tool to large samples of Seyfert 2's, as well as its extension to other activity classes, in order to test and refine this evolutionary scenario.
We have used X-ray spectra to measure attenuating columns in a large sample of Seyfert galaxies. Over 30 of these sources have resolved radio jets, allowing the relative orientation of the nucleus and host galaxy to be constrained. We have discovered that the distribution of absorbing columns is strongly correlated with the relative orientation of the Seyfert structures. This result is inconsistent with unification models including only a torus and is instead most readily explained if a second absorber is included: in addition to a Compton-thick, parsec-scale torus there would also be a larger…
In the unification scheme of Seyfert galaxies, a dusty torus blocks the continuum source and broad line region in Seyfert 2 galaxies. However it is not clear whether or not and to what extent the torus affects the narrow line spectra. In this paper, we show that Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 galaxies have different distributions on the [OIII]/H$β$ vs [NII]/H$α$ diagram (BPT diagram) for narrow lines. Seyfert 2 galaxies display a clear left boundary on the BPT diagram and only 7.3% of them lie on the left. By contrast, Seyfert 1 galaxies do not show such a cutoff and 33.0% of them stand on the left s…
ASCA observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 7582 revealed it was highly variable on the timescale of $\sim2\times10^4$ s in the hard X-ray (2-10 keV) band, while the soft X-ray (0.5-2 keV) flux remained constant during the observations. The spectral analysis suggests that this object is seen through an obscuring torus with the thickness of N$_{\rm H}\sim1.0\times 10^{23}\rm cm^{-2}$. The hard X-ray is an absorbed direct continuum from a hidden Seyfert 1 nucleus; the soft X-ray is dominated by the scattered central continuum from an extended spatial region. Thus we have an obscured/absorbed a…
The continuum variability of optically selected Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is found to be consistent with that expected from a simple Poissonian process, in which the total luminosity of an object is produced by the multiple superposition of identical pulses. The energies, time-scales and rates of the pulses are found to be in the range of those expected from supernovae which generate fast evolving remnants in a nuclear starburst. However, radio-loud AGN don't follow the predictions of that simple scenario.
This work studies the optical emission line properties of a sample of 155 low-redshift bright X-ray selected ROSAT Seyfert~1 type AGN for which adequate signal-to-noise ratio spectroscopic observations are available. We measured emission line properties by performing multi-component fits to the emission line profiles, covering the effect of blended iron emission. We also obtained continuum parameters, including 250eV X-ray luminosities derived from the ROSAT database. In addition, the measured properties are gathered for a correlation analysis, which confirms the well-known relations between t…
We have identified 12 Seyfert 1 galaxies that exhibit optical polarization spectra similar to those of Seyfert 2 galaxies in which polarized broad-lines are detected. We present new spectropolarimetric observations of 3 of them: Was 45, Mrk 231 and NGC 3227. These objects appear to be polarized as a result of far-field scattering in the polar illumination cones of the circum-nuclear torus. We estimate that they represent between 10 and 30 per cent of the Seyfert 1 population; they are found amongst all the main spectroscopic sub-types, including narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies. We have shown el…
It is well known that the [O {\sc iii}]$λ$5007 emission line and hard X-ray(2-10keV) luminosities are good indicators of AGN activities and that the near and mid-infrared emission of AGN originates from re-radiation of dusty clouds heated by the UV/optical radiation from the accretion disk. In this paper we present a study of the near-infrared K-band (2.2$μ$m) properties for a sample of 65 Seyfert 2 galaxies. By using the AGN/Bulge/Disk decomposition technique, we analyzed the 2MASS K$_{\rm S}$-band images for Seyfert 2 galaxies in order to derive the K$_{\rm S}$- band magnitudes for the centr…
We measure the metal abundance ratios in the X-ray photoionized gas located near the narrow line region of a sample of Seyfert 2 AGN. The high-resolution X-ray spectra observed with the Chandra high- and low-energy transmission grating spectrometers are compared with models of the resonant scattering and recombination emission from a plasma in thermal balance, and with multiple temperature zones. The abundance ratios in the sample are close to the Solar values, with slight over-abundances of N in NGC 1068, and of Ne in NGC 4151. Our X-ray spectral models use fewer degrees of freedom than previ…
We report R~4300 VLT SINFONI adaptive optics integral field K-band spectroscopy of the nucleus of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC3227 at a spatial resolution of 0.085" (7pc). We present the morphologies and kinematics of emission lines and absorption features, and give the first derivation of a black hole mass in a Seyfert 1 nucleus from spatially resolved stellar dynamics. We show that the gas in the nucleus has a mean column density of order 10^{24}-10^{25}cm^{-2} and that it is geometrically thick, in agreement with the standard `molecular torus' scenario. We discuss which heating processes may be…
We present nuclear spectral energy distributions (SEDs) in the range 0.4-16micron for an expanded CfA sample of Seyfert galaxies. The spectral indices from 1-16micron range from alpha_IR 0.9 to 3.8. The shapes of the spectra are correlated with Seyfert type in the sense that steeper nuclear SEDs (nu*f_nu increasing with increasing wavelength) tend to be found in Seyfert 2s and flatter SEDs (nu *f_nu constant) in Seyfert 1-1.5s. The galaxies optically classified as Seyferts 1.8s and 1.9s display values of alpha_IR as in type 1 objects, or values intermediate between those of Seyfert 1s and Seyf…
The most intense monitoring observations yet made were carried out on the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151 in the optical and near-infrared wave-bands. A lag from the optical light curve to the near-infrared light curve was measured. The lag-time between the V and K light curves at the flux minimum in 2001 was precisely 48+2-3 days, as determined by a cross-correlation analysis. The correlation between the optical luminosity of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) and the lag-time between the UV/optical and the near-infrared light curves is presented for NGC 4151 in combination with previous lag-time mea…
We summarize recent results on the infrared (IR) nuclear properties of Seyfert galaxies. 100% of all Seyfert 1-1.9$ and ~50% of all Seyfert 2s in the CfA and RSA samples observed with HST/NICMOS show nuclear point sources at 1.6micron. We find that the unresolved emission is variable in 9 out of the 14 Seyferts with duplicate observations, indicating a non-stellar origin. We have also put together non-stellar 0.4-16micron spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for the entire CfA sample of Seyfert galaxies. The shape of the SEDs for a complete sample of AGN can be used to constrain torus models.W…
We describe the results of a detailed study of the polarization properties of the broad H-alpha emission line in Type 1 Seyfert nuclei. Our analysis of these data points to a model in which the broad Balmer lines are emitted by a rotating disk, and are scattered in two main regions - one co-planar with the disk and within the circum-nuclear torus, the other, the polar scattering region, outside the torus but aligned with its axis. The relative importance of the two sources of polarized light is largely determined by the inclination of the system axis to the line-of-sight.
We use the CO band at 2.3 micron to constrain the populations of young stars in the central regions of Seyfert galaxies. We report new CO band spectroscopy of 46 Seyfert galaxies. In most cases, the observed CO indices appear diluted by the presence of a non-stellar component (most likely, warm dust surrounding the active nucleus). We used JHKL aperture photometry to estimate the non-stellar contribution at 2.3 micron. We successfully corrected the CO band for the dilution for 16 galaxies which were not dominated by the non-stellar component. Comparing with CO indices measured in elliptical an…
We present a series of statistical tests done to a sample of 29 Seyfert 1 and 59 Seyfert 2 galaxies selected from mostly isotropic properties, their far infrared fluxes and warm infrared colors. Such selection criteria provide a profound advantage over the criteria used by most investigators in the past, such as ultraviolet excess. These tests were done using ground based high resolution VLA A-configuration 3.6 cm radio and optical B and I imaging data. From the relative number of Seyfert 1's and Seyfert 2's we calculate that the torus half opening angle is 48deg. We show that, as seen in prev…
A modification of the popular unification model for Seyfert galaxies is proposed, which takes into account recent observational findings on the statistical properties of both type 1 and type 2 Seyferts. In the proposed scenario, Compton-thick Seyfert 2 galaxies are those sources observed through compact, thick matter (the `torus'), while Compton-thin/intermediate Seyfert galaxies are obscured by dust lanes at larger distances.
Half of the Seyfert-2 galaxies escaped detection of broad lines in their polarised spectra observed so far. Some authors have suspected that these non-HBLRs contain real Sy2 nuclei without intrinsic broad line region hidden behind a dust torus. If this were true, then their nuclear structure would fundamentally differ from that of Sy2s with polarised broad lines: in particular, they would not be explained by orientation-based AGN unification. Further arguments for two physically different Sy2 populations have been derived from the warm and cool IRAS F25/F60 ratios. These ratios, however, refer…
We present and discuss HST (WFPC2 and FOC) images and UV GHRS spectra plus ground-based near UV through to near IR spectra of three Seyfert 2 nuclei (NGC 7130, NGC 5135 and IC 3639). These galaxies, together to Mrk 477, were selected from a bigger sample that comprises the 20 brightest Seyfert 2 nuclei, with the goal to study the origin of the UV-optical-near IR featureless continuum in Seyfert 2 nuclei. These four galaxies have bolometric luminosities, as computed with the four IRAS bands, of 10^11 Lsol. They are close enough to be resolved with HST the nuclear zone. This makes these Seyfert …
Galactic superwinds occur in almost all infrared-luminous galaxies with star formation rates (SFRs) above 10 M_sun/yr, as shown by studies of the NaI D interstellar absorption line. We demonstrate that this result also applies to ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) which host an active galactic nucleus (AGN) embedded in a strong starburst (SFR > 100 M_sun/yr) by studying a sample of 26 Seyfert ULIRGs in NaI D. The infrared luminosity of these galaxies is powered jointly by the AGN and starburst. We find that there are hints of the influence of the AGN on outflows in Seyfert 2/starburst co…
The relation between the X-ray emission, the infrared emission and the coronal line emission in a sample of the brightest known Seyfert galaxies is analyzed. A close relationship between the absorption-corrected soft X-ray emission and both the mid-infrared and the coronal line emission is found among the Seyfert type 2 objects studied in this work. Being both the coronal line and the X-ray emissions main tracers of the AGN activity, their relation with the mid-infrared emission adds further support to the claim that the mid-infrared emission is primarily due to dust heated directly by the cen…
We collate the results of recent high resolution X-ray spectroscopic observations of 23 AGN, and use the resulting information to try to provide answers to some of the main open questions about warm absorbers: where do they originate, what effect do they have on their host galaxies, and what is their importance within the energetics and dynamics of the AGN system as a whole? We find that the warm absorbers of nearby Seyferts and certain QSOs are most likely to originate in outflows from the dusty torus, and that the kinetic luminosity of these outflows accounts for well under 1% of the bolomet…
The standard AGN unification models attempt to explain the diversity of observed AGN types by a few fundamental parameters, where orientation effects play a paramount role. Whether other factors, such as the evolutionary stage and the host galaxy properties are equally important parameters for the AGN diversity, is a key issue that we are addressing with the present data. Our sample of IR-selected Seyfert galaxies is based on the important discovery that their integrated IR spectrum contains an AGN signature. This being an almost isotropic property, our sample is much less affected by orientat…
We calculate the reflection component predicted by the anisotropic illumination model of Henri & Petrucci 1997. This component appears to be more important than for isotropic models. The overall X/gamma spectrum is found to be strongly angle-dependent. When the accretion disc is seen with a nearly edge-on orientation the reflection hump is weak, while a face-on viewing angle leads to a proeminent reflection hump with an equivalent reflection coefficient R close to 50. Such reflection dominated Seyfert 1s galaxies are not observed. By fitting observed X/gamma spectra, we derive inclination angl…
Morphological disturbances and gas kinematics of the SB0 galaxy NGC 7679=Arp 216 are investigated to get clues to the history of this highly composite object, where AGN and starburst signatures dominate each other in the X-ray and optical/IR regime, respectively. Perturbations of the ionized gas velocity field appear quite mild within 15'' (~5 kpc) from the center, so as it can be straightforwardly modeled as a circularly rotating disk. On the contrary, outside that radius, significant disturbances show up. In particular, the eastern distorted arm as well as the huge neutral hydrogen bridge co…
We discuss BeppoSAX observations and archive ASCA data of NGC 7679, a nearby, nearly face-on SB0 galaxy in which starburst and AGN activities coexist. The X-ray observations reveal a bright (L_{0.1-50 keV} \sim 2.9 \times 10^{43} erg s^{-1}) and variable source having a minimum observed doubling/halving time scale of \sim 10 - 20 ksec. A simple power law with photon index of Γ\sim 1.75 and small absorption (N_H < 4\times 10^{20} cm^{-2}) can reproduce the NGC 7679 spectrum from 0.1 up to 50 keV. These X-ray properties are unambiguous signs of Seyfert 1 activity in the nucleus of NGC 7679. The …
We use X-ray monitoring data obtained over a broad range of time-scales to measure the broadband power spectral density functions (PSDs) of two Seyfert galaxies, the broad line Seyfert 1 NGC 3227 and the Seyfert 2 NGC 5506, which has recently been identified as an obscured Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLS 1). Using a Monte-Carlo fitting technique we demonstrate that both PSDs are reminiscent of the PSD of black hole X-ray binaries (BHXRBs) in the high/soft state, and specifically rule out a low/hard state PSD shape in NGC 3227. This result demonstrates that, at least where variability is concerned, …
[ABRIDGED] We recently presented evidence of a connection between the brightness profiles of nearby early-type galaxies and the properties of the AGN they host. The radio loudness of the AGN appears to be univocally related to the host's brightness profile: radio-loud nuclei are only hosted by ``core'' galaxies while radio-quiet AGN are only found in ``power-law'' galaxies. We extend our analysis here to a sample of 42 nearby (V < 7000 km/s) Seyfert galaxies hosted by early-type galaxies. We used the available HST images to study their brightness profiles. Having excluded complex and highly nu…
Nuclear stellar clusters are a common phenomenon in spirals and in starbursts galaxies, and they may be a natural consequence of the star formation processes in the central regions of galaxies. HST UV imaging of a few Seyfert 2 galaxies have resolved nuclear starbursts in Seyfert 2 revealing stellar clusters as the main building blocks of the extended emission. However, we do not know whether stellar clusters are always associated with all types of nuclear activity. We present NUV and optical images provided by HST to find out the role that stellar clusters play in different types of AGNs (Sey…
We present an X-ray spectral analysis of a sample of 8 bona-fide Seyfert 2 galaxies, selected on the basis of their high $[OIII]\lambda5007$ flux, from the Ho et al. (1997) spectroscopic sample of nearby galaxies. We find that, in general, the X-ray spectra of our Seyfert 2 galaxies are complex, with some our objects having spectra different from the 'typical' spectrum of X-ray selected Seyfert 2 galaxies. Two (NGC3147 and NGC4698) show no evidence for intrinsic absorption. We suggest this is due to the fact that when the torus suppresses the intrinsic medium and hard energy flux, underlying e…
We analyze an X-ray flux-limited, complete sample of 93 AGN at z< 0.1, selected from the ROSAT Bright Survey. Two thirds of the sample are Seyfert 1 galaxies (Sy1) and one third are Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLSy1). We have obtained optical images of all objects. By modeling the host galaxy and the AGN central component we decompose the optical emission into nuclear, bulge and disk components, respectively. We find that the nuclear optical luminosity, thought to be associated with the accretion disk surrounding the active black hole, correlates with the X-ray luminosity, the radio lumino…
We present results based on the first INTEGRAL AGN catalogue. The catalogue includes 42 AGN, of which 10 are Seyfert 1, 17 are Seyfert 2, and 9 are intermediate Seyfert 1.5. The fraction of blazars is rather small with 5 detected objects, and only one galaxy cluster and no star-burst galaxies have been detected so far. The sample consists of bright (fx > 5e-12 erg/cm**2/s), low luminosity (L = 2e43 erg/s), local (z = 0.020) AGN. Although the sample is not flux limited, we find a ratio of obscured to unobscured AGN of 1.5 - 2.0, consistent with luminosity dependent unified models for AGN. Only …
The ROSAT ALL Sky Survey Bright Source Catalogue (RASS-BSC) has been correlated with the Catalogue of Principal Galaxies (PGC) to identify new extragalactic counterparts. 550 reliable optical counterparts have been detected. We took optical spectra of 176 X-ray candidates and companions at ESO, Calar Alto observatory and McDonald observatory. We discuss the redshift-, linewidth-, as well as optical and X-ray luminosity distribution of our ROSAT selected sample. 139 galaxies of our 166 X-ray counterparts have been identified as AGN with 93 being Seyfert 1 galaxies (61%). Eighteen of them (20%) …
Active galaxies are often associated with starbursts, which are possible sources of fuelling for the nuclear black holes. By means of optical (3500-7500 A) spectroscopic and narrow-band photometric data (H_alpha+[NII]6548,6583 and [OIII]5007) it is possible to detect starburst features in active nuclei and to study the correlation with Seyfert type and the surrounding environment. Here we present evidences of young stellar populations (HI high order Balmer lines) and extended H_alpha emission (indicative of HII regions) in 6 nearby Seyfert galaxies (z < 0.02). These very preliminary results se…
The participants in this meeting are almost all carrying out the hard work of making many different types of AGN surveys. Since it's so much easier to criticize other people's work than to do actual work myself, I'll just present some demurs regarding recent papers drawing conclusions from various AGN survey data. In particular I'll mention some questionable interpretations of surveys of Seyfert 2 near-UV polarization; interpreting the results of searches for polarized broad H-alpha lines in Seyfert 2s; testing the beam model for radio galaxies and quasars; testing the unification of Seyfert s…
We use the full broad-band XMM-Newton EPIC data to examine the X-ray spectrum of the nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068, previously shown to be complex with the X-ray continuum being a sum of components reflected/scattered from cold (neutral) and warm (ionised) matter, together with associated emission line spectra. We quantify the neutral and ionised reflectors in terms of the luminosity of the hidden nucleus. Both are relatively weak, a result we interpret on the Unified Seyfert Model by a near side-on view to the putative torus, reducing the visibility of the illuminated inner surface of the …
We model the spectral energy distribution of the ultrasoft broad-line AGN RE J2248-511 with Comptonised accretion disc models. These are able to reproduce the steep optical and ultrasoft X-ray slopes, and the derived black hole mass is consistent with independent mass estimates. This AGN displays properties of both broad and narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies, but we conclude that it is intrinsically a `normal' Seyfert 1 viewed at high inclination angle.
We measure the dependence of the AGN fraction on local environment at z~1, using spectroscopic data taken from the DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey, and Chandra X-ray data from the All-Wavelength Extended Groth Strip International Survey (AEGIS). To provide a clean sample of AGN we restrict our analysis to the red sequence population; this also reduces additional colour-environment correlations. We find evidence that high redshift LINERs in DEEP2 tend to favour higher density environments relative to the red population from which they are drawn. In contrast, Seyferts and X-ray selected AGN at z~1 …
We use the sample of emission-line nuclei derived from a recently completed optical spectroscopic survey of nearby galaxies to quantify the incidence of local (z = 0) nuclear activity. Consistent with previous studies, we find detectable amounts of ionized gas in the central few hundred parsecs of most (86%) galaxies. Half of the objects can be classified as H II or star-forming nuclei and the other half as some form of AGN, of which we distinguish three classes --- Seyfert nuclei, LINERs, and transition objects. The population of AGNs consequently is very large; approximately 43% of the galax…
We present infrared L-band (3-4 micron) nuclear spectra of a large sample of nearby ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs).ULIRGs classified optically as non-Seyferts (LINERs, HII-regions, and unclassified) are our main targets. Using the 3.3 micron polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission and absorption features at 3.1 micron due to ice-covered dust and at 3.4 micron produced by bare carbonaceous dust, we search for signatures of powerful active galactic nuclei (AGNs) deeply buried along virtually all lines-of-sight. The 3.3 micron PAH emission, the signatures of starbursts, is detect…
We report the discovery of the scattered emission from a hidden broad-line region (BLR) in a Seyfert 2 galaxy, Mrk 573, based on our recent spectropolarimetric observation performed at the Subaru Telescope. This object has been regarded as a type 2 AGN without a hidden BLR by the previous observations. However, our high quality spectrum of the polarized flux of Mrk 573 shows prominent broad (~3000 km/s) H_alpha emission, broad weak H_beta emission, and subtle Fe II multiplet emission. Our new detection of these indications for the presence of the hidden BLR in the nucleus of Mrk 573 is thought…
We have studied the relationship between the [O IV] lambda 25.89 micron emission line luminosities, obtained from Spitzer spectra, the X-ray continua in the 2-10 keV band, primarily from ASCA, and the 14-195 keV band obtained with the SWIFT/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT), for a sample of nearby (z < 0.08) Seyfert galaxies. For comparison, we have examined the relationship between the [O III] 5007, the 2-10 keV and the 14-195 keV luminosities for the same set of objects. We find that both the [O IV] and [O III] luminosities are well-correlated with the BAT luminosities. On the other hand, the [O I…
