We measure the rest-frame B-band luminosity function of red-sequence galaxies (RSLF) of five intermediate-redshift (0.5 < z < 0.9), high-mass (sigma > 950 km/s) clusters. Cluster galaxies are identified through photometric redshifts based on imaging in seven bands (five broad, and two narrow) using the WIYN 3.5m telescope. The luminosity functions are well-fit down to M_B^*+3 for all of the clusters out to a radius of R_200. For comparison, the luminosity functions for a sample of 59 low redshift clusters selected from the SDSS are measured as well. There is a brightening trend (M_B^* increases by 0.7 mags by z=0.75) with redshift comparable to what is seen in the field for similarly defined galaxies, although there is a hint that the cluster red-sequence brightening is more rapid in the past (z>0.5), and relatively shallow at more recent times. Contrary to other claims, we find little evidence for evolution of the faint end slope. Previous indications of evolution may be due to limitations in measurement technique, bias in the sample selection, and cluster to cluster variation. As seen in both the low and high redshift sample, a significant amount of variation in luminosity functions parameters alpha and M^* exists between individual clusters.
We use the combination of the 2 Ms Chandra X-ray image, new J and H band images, and the Spitzer IRAC and MIPS images of the Chandra Deep Field-North to obtain high spectroscopic and photometric redshift completeness of high and intermediate X-ray luminosity sources in the redshift interval z=2-3. We measure the number densities of z=2-3 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and broad-line AGNs in the rest-frame 2-8 keV luminosity intervals 10^44-10^45 and 10^43-10^44 ergs/s and compare with previous lower redshift results. We confirm a decline in the number densities of intermediate-luminosity source…
Within the context of investigating possible differences between the mechanisms at play in Radio Loud AGN and those in Radio Quiet ones, we study the spectral characteristics of a selected sample of Intermediate-Luminosity Broad-Line Radio Galaxies in X-rays, optical, IR and radio. Here, we present the radio spectra acquired with the 100-m radio telescope in Effelsberg between 2.6 and 32 GHz. These measurements reveal a large variety of spectral shapes urging for radio imaging that would disclose the source morphology. Such studies could potentially discriminate between different mechanisms.
We present the analysis of archival data from ROSAT and ASCA of a serendipitous source PKS 2316-423. According to its featureless non-thermal radio/optical continuum, the object has been assumed as a BL Lac candidate in the literature. It was evident variable over the multiple X-ray observations. Specially, a variable high-energy tail of the synchrotron radiation is revealed. X-ray spectral analysis provided further evidence of its synchrotron-nature broad-band spectrum with steep and down-curved shape in the range of 0.1-10 keV. Further SED analysis suggest that it is a very low luminosity ``…
In this paper we present a rigorous derivation of the luminosity function (LF) in presence of a background. Our approach is free from the logical contradictions of assigning negative values to positively defined quantities and avoid the use of incorrect estimates for the 68 % confidence interval (error bar). It accounts for Poisson fluctuations ignored in previous approaches and does not requires binning of the data. The method is extensible to more complex situations, does not require the existence of an environment--independent LF, and clarifies issues common to field LF derivations. We appl…
In several nearby intermediate luminosity early-type galaxies, recent observations at large radii have shown a indications of a lack of dark matter, substantially at odds with the prediction from the CDM hierarchical merger models. Here we discuss a pilot observational project for the study of the internal kinematical and dynamical properties of this remarkable sample of galaxies. Using the VIMOS-IFU in its high spectral resolution mode, it would be possible to investigate the regions up to about 1.2 effective radii, taking advantage of the much larger field of view and telescope diameter. Thi…
The Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope has been used to obtain deep high-resolution images of the giant early-type galaxy NGC 1316 which is an obvious merger remnant. These observations supersede previous, shallower observations which revealed the presence of a population of metal-rich globular clusters of intermediate age (~ 3 Gyr). We detect a total of 1496 cluster candidates, almost 4 times as many as from the previous WFPC2 images. We confirm the bimodality of the color distribution of clusters, even in V-I, with peak colors 0.93 and 1.06. The large number of d…
We describe a new estimate of the radio galaxy 1.4 GHz luminosity function and its evolution at intermediate redshifts (z~0.4). Photometric redshifts and color selection have been used to select Bj<23.5 early-type galaxies from the Panoramic Deep Fields, a multicolor survey of two 25 sq deg fields. Approximately 230 radio galaxies have then been selected by matching early-type galaxies with NVSS radio sources brighter than 5 mJy. Estimates of the 1.4 GHz luminosity function of radio galaxies measure significant evolution over the observed redshift range. For an Omega_M=1 cosmology the evolutio…
We compare pure luminosity evolution (PLE) models with recent data at low and high redshift. These models assume that massive galaxies were assembled and formed most of their stars at high redshift (z > 3) and have evolved without merging or substantial dust obscuration since then. Our models span the full range of plausible metallicities, initial mass functions (IMF's) and star formation histories. We require them to reproduce the abundance of galaxies by colour and luminosity in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and we investigate whether they can simultaneously fit (i) the observed galaxy counts…
We present high S/N spectra of the H-beta region in 17 intermediate redshift (0.85 le z le 2.5) quasars. The spectra represent first results of our campaign to test the redshift/luminosity robustness of the so-called Eigenvector 1 (E1) parameter space as developed for low redshift AGN in Sulentic et al. (2000). The new quasars span the luminosity range -26 ge M_B ge -29 while most of our low redshift sample (n=215) involve sources in the range -19 ge M_B ge -26. The high redshift sources show E1 parameter values and domain occupation that are similar to our low redshift sample supporting earli…
We present the gas-phase oxygen abundance (O/H) for a sample of 131 star-forming galaxies at intermediate redshifts ($0.2<z<1.0$). The sample selection, the spectroscopic observations (mainly with VLT/FORS) and associated data reduction, the photometric properties, the emission-line measurements, and the spectral classification are fully described in a companion paper (Paper I). We use two methods to estimate the O/H abundance ratio: the {} "standard" $R\_{\mathrm{23}}$ method which is based on empirical calibrations, and the CL01 method which is based on grids of photo-ionization models and o…
We analyze a population of intermediate-redshift (z ~ 0.05-0.3), off-nuclear X-ray sources located within optically-bright galaxies in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) and Galaxy Evolution from Morphology and SEDs (GEMS) fields. A total of 24 off-nuclear source candidates are classified using deep Chandra exposures from the Chandra Deep Field-North, Chandra Deep Field-South, and Extended Chandra Deep Field-South; 15 of these are newly identified. These sources have average X-ray spectral shapes and optical environments similar to those observed for off-nuclear intermediate-l…
We take the established relation between black hole mass, X-ray luminosity, and radio luminosity and show that intermediate mass black holes, such as those predicted to exist at the centers of globular clusters, will be easily identifiable objects in deep radio observations. We show that the radio observations will be far more senstive than any possible X-ray observations. We also discuss the likely optical photometric and spectroscopic appearance of such systems in the event that radio detections are made.
We examine the evolution of the galaxy luminosity function (LF) using a sample of over 2000 galaxies, with 0.12 < z < 0.55 and 17.0 < Rc < 21.5, drawn from the Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (CNOC2), at present the largest such sample at intermediate redshifts. We use UBVRcIc photometry to classify our galaxies into early, intermediate, and late types, for which we compute luminosity functions in the rest-frame B, Rc, and U bandpasses. In particular, we adopt a parameterization of LF evolution including luminosity and number density evolution, and tak…
We study properties of the host galaxies of 15 hard X-ray selected type-2 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at intermediate redshifts (0.05$<z<$0.6) detected in $ASCA$ surveys. The absorption corrected hard X-ray luminosities $L_{\rm 2-10 keV}$ range from 10$^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$ to $10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We took the $R$-band image of these AGNs with the University of Hawaii 2.2 m telescope. Thanks to the intrinsic obscuration of nuclear light, we can decompose the galaxies with a spheroid component and a disk component. The resulting spheroid luminosities correlate with $L_{\rm 2-10 keV}$; higher …
AGN masses can be estimated by "single epoch" spectral measurements through a mass-luminosity- linewidth relation calibrated by echo mapping measurements of a reference sample of low redshift ($z < 0.3$) and low luminosity ($M_B > -26$) AGNs. To analyze the possible dependence of this relation on luminosity we selected a sample of bright, intermediate redhift ($z \sim 1$) objects and we started a spectrophotometric monitoring campaign with a typical sampling time of about one month. Variability observations of lines with shorter wavelength than H$_β$ will also provide new information on the st…
It has been shown that the luminosity of AGNs and the size of their broad line region obey a simple relation of the type R=a L^g, from faint Seyfert nuclei to bright quasars, allowing single-epoch determination of the central black hole mass M=b L^g D^2 from their luminosity L and width of H_beta emission line. Adopting this mass determination for cosmological studies requires the extrapolation to high z and L of a relation whose calibration relies so far on reverberation mapping measurements performed for L<10^46 erg/s and z<0.4. We initiated a campaign for the monitoring of a few luminous, i…
ROSAT, and now Chandra, X-ray images allow studies of extranuclear X-ray point sources in galaxies other than our own. X-ray observations of normal galaxies with ROSAT and Chandra have revealed that off-nuclear, compact, Intermediate-luminosity (Lx[2-10 keV] >= 1e39 erg/s) X-ray Objects (IXOs, a.k.a. ULXs [Ultraluminous X-ray sources]) are quite common. Here we present a catalog and finding charts for 87 IXOs in 54 galaxies, derived from all of the ROSAT HRI imaging data for galaxies with cz <= 5000 km/s from the Third Reference Catalog of Bright Galaxies (RC3). We have defined the cutoff Lx f…
We investigate bulge and disk scaling relations using a volume-corrected sample of early- to intermediate-type disk galaxies in which, importantly, the biasing flux from additional nuclear components has been modeled and removed. Structural parameters are obtained from a seeing-convolved, bulge+disk+nuclear-component decomposition applied to near-infrared surface brightness profiles spanning ~10 pc to the outer disk. Bulge and disk parameters, and bulge-to-disk ratios, are analyzed as a function of bulge luminosity, disk luminosity, galaxy central velocity dispersion, and galaxy Hubble type. M…
We present the first clustering results of X-ray selected AGN at z~3. Using Chandra X-ray imaging and UVR optical colors from MUSYC photometry in the ECDF-S field, we selected a sample of 58 z~3 AGN candidates. From the optical data we also selected 1385 LBG at 2.8<z< 3.8 with R<25.5. We performed auto-correlation and cross-correlation analyses, and here we present results for the clustering amplitudes and dark matter halo masses of each sample. For the LBG we find a correlation length of r_0,LBG = 6.7 +/- 0.5 Mpc, implying a bias value of 3.5 +/- 0.3 and dark matter (DM) halo masses of log(Mm…
To test the idea that ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) in external galaxies represent a class of accreting intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs), we have undertaken a program to identify ULXs and a lower luminosity X-ray comparison sample with the highest quality data in the {\it Chandra} archive. We establish as a general property of ULXs that the most X-ray-luminous objects possess the flattest X-ray spectra (in the {\it Chandra} bandpass). No prior sample studies have established the general hardening of ULX spectra with luminosity. This hardening occurs at the highest luminosities (absor…
AIMS. While observational evidence shows that most of the decline in a star's X-ray activity occurs between the age of the Hyades (~8 x 10^8 yrs) and that of the Sun, very little is known about the evolution of stellar activity between these ages. To gain information on the typical level of coronal activity at a star's intermediate age, we studied the X-ray emission from stars in the 1.9 Gyr old open cluster NGC 752. METHODS. We analysed a ~140 ks Chandra observation of NGC 752 and a ~50 ks XMM-Newton observation of the same cluster. We detected 262 X-ray sources in the Chandra data and 145 so…
The WFPC2 Camera on board HST has been used to obtain high-resolution images of NGC 3610, a dynamically young elliptical galaxy. These observations supersede shorter, undithered HST observations where an intermediate-age population of globular clusters was first discovered. The new observations show the bimodal color distribution of globular clusters more clearly, with peaks at (V-I)o = 0.95 and 1.17. The luminosity function (LF) of the blue, metal-poor population of clusters in NGC 3610 turns over, consistent with a Gaussian distribution with a peak Mv ~= -7.0, similar to old globular-cluster…
While many observed ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs, Lx > 10^39 erg s^-1) could be extragalactic X-ray binaries (XRBs) emitting close to the Eddington limit, the highest-luminosity ULXs (Lx > 3x10^39 erg s^-1) exceed the isotropic Eddington luminosity for even high-stellar-mass accreting black hole XRBs. It has been suggested that these highest-luminosity ULXs may contain accreting intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) binaries. We consider this hypothesis for dense, young (about 100 Myr) stellar clusters where we assume that a 50-500 solar mass central IMBH has formed through runaway growth …
We present the results of near-infrared H-band (1.65 microns) imaging of 19 steep spectrum radio quasars (SSRQ) in the redshift range 0.5 < z < 1.0. This sample of SSRQs is matched with our previously studied complete sample of 20 flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQ) with respect to redshift and optical and radio luminosity. We are able to clearly detect the host galaxy in 10 (53 %) SSRQs and marginally in 6 (32 %) others, while the host remains unresolved in 3 (16 %) SSRQs. The galaxies hosting the SSRQs are large (average bulge scale-length R(e) = 9.0+-1.7 kpc) and luminous (average M(H) = -27…
Recent observations of globular clusters in intermediate-age (2-4 Gyr old) merger remnants have provided the hitherto `missing link' between between young merger remnants and normal elliptical galaxies. The luminosity functions (LFs) of the `blue' globular clusters exhibit a Gaussian shape centered on M_V ~ -7.2 as found for giant ellipticals, while the `red' clusters exhibit LFs that are more extended towards both the bright and faint ends, as expected for a cluster population of intermediate age. Specific frequencies for these systems have been calculated by evolving both the LF of the `red'…
Redshift evolution of supermassive black hole mass functions (BHMFs) is investigated up to z ~ 1. BHMFs at intermediate redshifts are calculated in two ways. One way is from early-type galaxy luminosity functions (LFs); we assume an M_BH - L_sph correlation at a redshift by considering a passive evolution of L_sph in the local relationship. The resultant BHMFs (spheroid-BHMFs) from LFs of red sequence galaxies indicates a slight decrease of number density with increasing redshift at M_BH > 10^{7.5-8} M_solar. Since a redshift evolution in slope and zeropoint of the M_BH - L_sph relation is unl…
We present H and K photometry of 42,000 stars in an area of 250 arcmin$^{2}$ centered on the Galactic center. We use the photometry to construct a dereddened K band luminosity function (LF) for this region, excluding the excessively crowded inner 2' of the Galaxy. This LF is intermediate between the LF of Baade's window and the LF of inner 2' of the Galactic center. We speculate that the bright stars in this region have an age which is intermediate between the starburst population in the Galactic center and the old bulge population. We present the coordinates and mags for 16 stars with K_{0} <…
The dynamics of stars in the inner regions of nearby globular clusters (GCs) such as G1 indicate the presence of central concentrated dark masses, and one would like to know whether these are indeed intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs). As the number of surrounding stars, and their motions, are roughly known, the capture rate can be estimated; the question then arises of whether the apparent quiescence of the nuclei of these GCs is compatible with the IMBH's presence. The role of debris from disrupted stars in activating quiescent nuclei of GCs is studied here employing three-dimensional hydr…
[Abridged] We present new VLT ISAAC spectra for 30 quasars, which we combine with previous data to yield a sample of 53 intermediate redshift (z ~ 0.9 - 3.0) sources. The sample is used to explore properties of prominent lines in the Hbeta spectral region of these very luminous quasars. We find two major trends: (1) a systematic increase of minimum FWHM Hbeta with luminosity (discussed in a previous paper). This lower FWHM envelope is best fit assuming that the narrowest sources radiate near the Eddington limit, show line emission from a virialized cloud distribution, and obey a well defined b…
We discuss the prospects for detecting faint intermediate-mass black holes, such as those predicted to exist in the cores of globular clusters and dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We briefly summarize the difficulties of stellar dynamical searches, then show that recently discovered relations between black hole mass, X-ray luminosity and radio luminosity imply that in most cases, these black holes should be more easily detected in the radio than in the X-rays. Finally, we show upper limits from some radio observations of globular clusters, and discuss the possibility that the radio source in the cor…
Broad Fe K-alpha emission lines have recently been reported in a number of Galactic black holes. Such lines are useful accretion flow diagnostics because they may be produced at the inner accretion disk and shaped by relativistic effects, but in general they have only been observed at luminosities of L_X ~ 10^(37-38) erg/s in soft X-rays. The Galactic microquasar V4641 Sgr -- widely known for its 12.2 Crab (1.5-12 keV) outburst in 1999 September -- displayed low-level activity in 1999 March. BeppoSAX observed the source in this state and Fe K-alpha line emission was found (in 't Zand et al. 20…
Galaxy evolution during the last 9 Gyr is discussed. It can be traced back from well known present-day galaxies or directly observed for galaxies at different look back times. This requires clear and consistently matched selection criteria for galaxy samples. There is a net decrease of rest-frame, UV luminosity density, at least since z = 1. It is interpreted as an important decline of the star formation since the last ~9 Gyr. A similar trend is found for the evolution of the IR luminosity density which accounts for heavily extincted starbursts. Interestingly the global star formation density,…
We report the results of Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of a new outburst of an ultraluminous supersoft X-ray source in M101. CXOU J140332.3+542103 was observed in a low luminosity state (L_x~1e37 erg/s) between 2004 January and May. The low-state X-ray spectra were relatively hard; the combined low state spectrum can be fitted with a combination of a power-law with photon index of 1.4 and a blackbody of 63 eV. During 2004 July, the source underwent a strong outburst and the peak 0.3-7 keV luminosity reached 3e40 erg/s, with a bolometric luminosity of about 1e41 erg/s. The outburst spectr…
The origin and nature of Ultra-Luminous X-ray sources (ULXs) is a contentious and controversial topic. There are ongoing debates about the masses of the objects responsible, their sources of mass for accretion, and their relation to stellar populations in galaxies. A new picture of these objects is proposed in which they are intermediate-mass black holes confined to the disks of their host galaxies and accreting from the interstellar medium. They are then preferentially found in or near molecular clouds. This model correctly predicts the shape of the observed luminosity function and requires o…
We present a systematic X-ray study of eight AGNs with intermediate mass black holes (M_BH 8-95x10^4 Msun) based on 12 XMM-Newton observations. The sample includes the two prototype AGNs in this class - NGC4395 and POX52 and six other AGNs discovered with the SDSS. These AGNs show some of the strongest X-ray variability with the normalized excess variances being the largest and the power density break time scales being the shortest observed among radio-quiet AGNs. The excess variance -- luminosity correlation appears to depend on both the BH mass and the Eddington luminosity ratio. The break t…
We present new hard X-ray spectra of three radio-loud AGNs of moderately high X-ray luminosity (L_x ~ 10^45 erg/s; PKS 2349-01, 3C 323.1, and 4C 74.26) obtained with ASCA and BeppoSAX. The X-ray continua are described in all three cases with a power law model with photon indices of Gamma~1.85, modified at low energies by absorption in excess of the Galactic, which appears to be due to neutral gas. At higher energies, an Fe Ka emission line is detected in PKS 2349-01 and 4C 74.26, and is tentatively detected in 3C 323.1. The equivalent widths of the lines are consistent, albeit within large unc…
The transition between the low density groups of T Tauri stars and the high density clusters around massive stars occurs in the intermediate-mass (IM) range (M$_*$$\sim$2--8 M$_\odot$). High spatial resolution studies of IM young stellar objects (YSO) can provide important clues to understand the clustering in massive star forming regions. Aims: Our aim is to search for clustering in IM Class 0 protostars. The high spatial resolution and sensitivity provided by the new A configuration of the Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) allow us to study the clustering in these nearby objects. Methods…
This third paper in a series about the dwarf galaxy populations in groups within the Local Supercluster concerns the intermediate mass (2.1 x 10^13 solar) NGC 5353/4 Group with a core dominated by S0 systems and a periphery of mostly spiral systems. Dwarf galaxies are strongly concentrated toward the core. The mass to light ratio M/L_R=105 in solar units is a factor 3 lower than for the two groups studied earlier in the series. The properties of the group suggest it is much less dynamically evolved than those two groups of early type galaxies. By comparison, the NGC 5353/4 Group lacks superlum…
As the most extreme members of the rapidly evolving faint blue galaxy population at intermediate redshift, the compact narrow emission line galaxies (CNELGs) are intrinsically luminous (-22 < M_B < -18) with narrow emission linewidths (30 < σ< 125 km/s). Their nature is heavily debated: they may be low-mass starbursting galaxies that will fade to present-day dwarf galaxies or bursts of star formation temporarily dominating the flux of more massive galaxies, possibly related to in situ bulge formation or the formation of cores of galaxies. We present deep, high-quality (~0.6 - 0.8 arcsec) image…
The color-magnitude diagrams of the open clusters NGC 2420 and NGC 2506 have been investigated as intermediate links between the solar neighborhood and the Magellanic Clouds. Two sets of theoretical isochrones which include convective overshoot are zeroed to the sun at solar abundance and to the unevolved main sequence dwarfs of the Hipparcos catalog at [Fe/H] = -0.4, requiring a differential of 0.4 mag between the unevolved main sequences at a given color. Adopting E(B-V) = 0.04 and [Fe/H] = -0.39 for NGC 2506 and 0.04 and -0.29 for NGC 2420,the respective apparent moduli are 12.70 and 12.15,…
Recent observations of globular clusters (GCs) in intermediate-age (2-4 Gyr old), early-type merger remnants have provided the hitherto `missing link' between young merger remnants and `normal' elliptical galaxies in the form of a GC subsystem with colors and luminosities consistent with population synthesis model predictions for those ages and ~solar metallicity. Here we present new, deep observations of the GC system of the intermediate-age merger remnant NGC 1316, using the ACS camera aboard Hubble Space Telescope, which allowed us to create luminosity functions (LFs) as a function of galac…
We present near-infrared H-band imaging of 15 intermediate redshift (0.5<z<1) radio quiet quasars (RQQ) in order to characterize the properties of their host galaxies. We are able to clearly detect the surrounding nebulosity in 12 objects, whereas the object remains unresolved in three cases. For all the resolved objects, we find that the host galaxy is well represented by a de Vaucouleurs r^{1/4} surface brightness law. This is the first reasonably sized sample of intermediate redshift RQQs studied in the near-infrared. The RQQ host galaxies are luminous (average M_H=-26.3+-0.6) and large gia…
We examine the radius-luminosity (R-L) relation for blue galaxies in the Team Keck Redshift Survey (TKRS) of GOODS-N. We compare with a volume-limited, Sloan Digital Sky Survey sample and find that the R-L relation has evolved to lower surface brightness since z=1. Based on the detection limits of GOODS this can not be explained by incompleteness in low surface-brightness galaxies. Number density arguments rule out a pure radius evolution. It can be explained by a radius dependent decline in B-band luminosity with time. Assuming a linear shift in M_B with z, we use a maximum likelihood method …
Assuming a naive star formation history, we construct the synthetic X-ray source populations for comparison with the X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of the interacting galaxies NGC 4038/4039 using a population synthesis code. We have considered high- and intermediate-mass X-ray binaries, young rotation-powered pulsars and fallback disk-fed black holes in modeling the bright X-ray sources detected. We find that the majority of the X-ray sources are likely to be intermediate-mass X-ray binaries, but for typical binary evolution parameters, the predicted XLF seems to be steeper than observed. We …
We present J and K-band luminosity functions (LF) for the Group Evolution Multiwavelength Study (GEMS) sample of 60 nearby groups of galaxies, with photometry from the 2MASS survey. We find that, as seen in B and R-band photometry of a subsample of these groups in our earlier work, the LFs of the X-ray dim groups (L_X < 10^41.7 erg/s) show a depletion of galaxies of intermediate luminosity around M_K = -23, within a radius 0.3R_500 from the centres of these groups. This feature is not seen in the X-ray brighter groups, nor in either kind of group when the LFs are determined all the way out to …
We report on a new study aimed at understanding the diversity and evolutionary properties of distant galactic bulges in the context of well-established trends for pure spheroidal galaxies. Bulges have been isolated for a sample of 137 spiral galaxies in the GOODS fields within the redshift range 0.1 < z < 1.2. Using proven photometric techniques we determine for each galaxy the characteristic parameters (size, surface brightness, profile shape) in the 4 GOODS-ACS imaging bands of both the disk and bulge components. Using the DEIMOS spectrograph on Keck, precision stellar velocity dispersions w…
We present a pilot study of the X-ray properties of intermediate-mass (~10^5-10^6 M_sun) black holes in active galaxies using the Chandra X-ray telescope. Eight of the 10 active galaxies are detected with a significance of at least 3 sigma, with X-ray luminosities in the range L_(0.5-2 keV) ~ 10^41-10^43 ergs/s. The optical-to-X-ray flux ratios are consistent with expectations, given the known correlations between alpha_ox and ultraviolet luminosity, while a couple of objects appear to be anomalously X-ray weak. The range of 0.5--2 keV photon indices we measure, 1 < Gamma_s < 2.7, is entirely …
We have made a survey of quasar environments at 0.5 < z < 0.8, using a sample of both radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars matched in B-band luminosity. Our observations include images of background control fields to provide a good determination of the field galaxy counts. About 10 per cent of the quasars appear to live in rich clusters, whereas approximately 45 per cent live in environments similar to that of field galaxies. The richness of galaxies within a 0.5 Mpc radius around the radio-quiet quasars is found to be indistinguishable from the richness around the radio-loud quasars, correspond…
We examine the blue straggler populations of 13 low-luminosity (M_V_t >~ -6) globular clusters and 2 old open clusters. These clusters test blue straggler formation in environments intermediate between higher luminosity (and usually higher density) clusters and the Galactic field. The anti-correlation between the relative frequency of blue stragglers (F_BSS = N_BSS / N_HB) and cluster luminosity continues to the lowest luminosity clusters, which have frequencies meeting or exceeding that of field stars. In addition we find that the anti-correlation between straggler frequency and central densi…
We report the intermediate-scale (0.3 to 40 Mpc/h) clustering of 35,000 luminous early-type galaxies at redshifts 0.16 to 0.44 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We present the redshift-space two-point correlation function ξ(s), the projected correlation function w_p(r_p), and the deprojected real-space correlation function ξ(r), for approximately volume-limited samples. As expected, the galaxies are highly clustered, with the correlation length varying from 9.8 +/- 0.2 Mpc/h to 11.2 +/- 0.2 Mpc/h, dependent on the specific luminosity range. For the -23.2 < Mg < -21.2 sample, the inferred bias…
The deep near-infrared luminosity function of AC118, a cluster of galaxies at z=0.3, is presented. AC118 is a bimodal cluster, as evidenced both by our near-infrared images of lensed galaxies, by public X-ray Rosat images and by the spatial distribution of bright galaxies. Taking advantage of the extension and depth of our data, which sample an almost unexplored region in the depth vs. observed area diagram, we derive the luminosity function (LF), down to the dwarf regime (M*+5), computed in several cluster portions. The overall LF, computed on a 2.66 Mpc2 areas (H_0=50 km/s/Mpc), has an inter…
Luminosity Functions have been obtained for very faint dwarf galaxies in the cores of four rich clusters of galaxies (Abell 2052, 2107, 2199 and 2666). It is found that the luminosity function of dwarf galaxies rises very steeply in these clusters, with a power-law slope of α-2.2 (down to absolute limiting magnitudes M_I = -13 and M_B = -11 for H_0 = 75 km/s/Mpc). A steepening of the luminosity function at faint magnitudes may in fact be a common feature of both cluster and field populations. Such a result may explain the observed excess counts of faint, intermediate redshift galaxies in the U…
We present the first determination of the pairwise velocity dispersion of galaxies at different luminosity with the final release of the Two-Degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS). Our result surprisingly shows that the random velocities of the faint galaxies are very high, around $ 700 \kms$, reaching similar values as the brightest galaxies. At intermediate luminosities slightly brighter than the characteristic luminosity $M_\star$, the velocities exhibit a well defined steep minimum near $ 400 \kms$. The result challenges the current halo model of galaxies of Yang et al. that was obta…
The starburst galaxy M82 at a distance of 12 million light years, is the host of an unusually bright $2.4-16\times 10^{40}$ erg/s X-ray point source, which is best explained by an accreting black hole $10^{2}$ to $10^4$ times more massive than the Sun. Though the strongest candidate for a so called intermediate mass black hole, the only support stems from the observed luminosity and the 0.05-0.1 Hz quasi periodicity in its signal. Interestingly, the $7-12 $Myr old star cluster MGG-11 which has been associated with the X-ray source is sufficiently dense that an intermediate mass black hole coul…
From deep CCD observations of the cluster Abell 2554 we have recovered the cluster's luminosity distribution over a wide range of magnitude (-24 < M(R) < -16). We compare the derived A2554 cluster luminosity function (at redshift 0.1) with that of the local Coma Cluster (A1656) and the more distant (z = 0.2) cluster A963. The distribution is remarkably similar for these three clusters of comparable richness and morphology. All show a flat (α= -1.0) luminosity function for the giant galaxies (-24 < M(R) < -19.5) which exhibits a sharp upturn (α= -1.7) at some intermediate magnitude (M(R) = -19)…
In this work I report on the results of synthetic thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch models (TP-AGB) and compare the results to the abundance ratios in a sample of planetary nebulae. I use updated input parameters for mass-loss, the stellar luminosity, and dredge-up. I calculated models with masses between 0.8 solar masses and 8.0 solar masses. I also calculated models with [Fe/H] between -2.5 and 0.3. The effects of the first, second, third dredge-ups and hot-bottom burning are reported on. Models of the planetary nebula in M15 are reported on. The analysis of samples of Galactic bulge…
We apply the V/Vm test to a subsample of compact steep-spectrum sources from a complete sample of radio sources selected at 2.7 GHz. We find that the <V/Vm> has a value intermediate between those found for samples of extended steep-spectrum sources and those of compact flat-spectrum sources. If the sample is split into two further classes of sources having more steep and less steep spectra, the <V/Vm> values for these then tally roughly with those found for the extended steep-spectrum and compact flat-spectrum classes of sources. Implications of this result are discussed.
A tangential distortion of background source galaxies around foreground lens galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field is detected at the 99.3% confidence level. An important element of our analysis is the use of photometric redshifts to determine distances of lens and source galaxies and rest-frame B-band luminosities of the lens galaxies. The lens galaxy halos obey a Tully-Fisher relation between halo circular velocity and luminosity; the typical lens galaxy, at a redshift z = 0.6, has a circular velocity of 210 +/-40 km/s at M_B = -18.5, if q_0 = 0.5. Control tests, in which lens and source positio…
We describe new optical images and spectra of POX 52, a dwarf galaxy with an active nucleus that was originally detected in the POX objective-prism survey. While POX 52 was originally thought to be a Seyfert 2 galaxy, the new data reveal an emission-line spectrum very similar to that of the dwarf Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4395, with broad components to the permitted line profiles, and we classify POX 52 as a Seyfert 1 galaxy. The host galaxy appears to be a dwarf elliptical, and its brightness profile is best fit by a Sersic model with an index of 3.6+/-0.2 and a total magnitude of M_V = -17.6. App…
We present a new determination of the co-moving star formation density at redshifts z~<0.35 from the 1.4 GHz luminosity function of sub-mJy star-burst galaxies. Our sample, taken from Benn et al. (1993), is insensitive to dust obscuration. The shape of the Luminosity function of this sample is indistinguishable from a number of reasonable a prior models of the luminosity function. Using these shapes we calculate the modest corrections (typically ~< 20 per cent to the observed 1.4 GHz luminosity density. We find that the cosmic variance in our estimate of this luminosity density is large. We fi…
