A single linear optical set-up is used to observe an entire family of four-photon entangled states. This approach breaks with the inflexibility of present linear-optical set-ups usually designed for the observation of a particular multi-partite entangled state only. The family includes several prominent entangled states that are known to be highly relevant for quantum information applications.
We provide a multi-parameter family of 2-qudit PPT entangled states which generalizes the celebrated Horodecki state in 3 x 3. The entanglement of this family is identified via semidefinite programming based on "PPT symmetric extensions" by Doherty et al.
By modifying the method of Bruss and Peres, we construct two new families of entangled two qutrit states. For all density matrices in these families the (i,j)th entry is 0 for i+j odd. The first family depends on 27 independent real parameters and includes both PPT and NPT states. The second family consists of PPT entangled states. The number of independent real parameters of this family is at least 11.
We construct a family of map which is shown to be positive when imposing certain condition on the parameters. Then we show that the constructed map can never be completely positive. After tuning the parameters, we found that the map still remain positive but it is not completely positive. We then use the positive but not completely positive map in the detection of bound entangled state and negative partial transpose entangled states.
We construct ($d\times d$)-dimensional bound entangled states, which violate, for any $d>2$, a bipartite Bell inequality introduced in this paper. We conjecture that the proposed class of Bell inequalities acts as a dimension witness for bound entangled states: For any $d>2$ there exists a Bell inequality from this class that can be violated with bound entangled states only if their Hilbert space dimension is at least $d\times d$. Numerics supports this conjecture up to $d=8$.
By calculating entanglement measures and quantum violation of Bell-type inequality, we reveal the relationship between entanglement measure and the amount of quantum violation for a family of four-qubit entangled states. It has been demonstrated that the Bell-type inequality is completely violated by these four-qubit entangled states. The plot of entanglement measure as a function of the expectation value of Bell operator shows that entanglement measure first decreases and then increases smoothly with increasing quantum violation.
Bound entanglement, being entangled yet not distillable, is essential to our understandings of the relations between nonlocality and entanglement besides its applications in certain quantum information tasks. Recently, bound entangled states that violate a Bell inequality have been constructed for a two-qutrit system, disproving a conjecture by Peres that bound entanglement is local. Here we shall construct such kind of nonlocal bound entangled states for all finite dimensions larger than two, making possible their experimental demonstrations on most general systems. We propose a Bell inequali…
Measurement-based quantum computation (MQC) is a leading paradigm for building a quantum computer. Cluster states being used in this context act as one-way quantum computers. Here, we consider Z-states as a type of highly entangled states like cluster states, which can be used for one-way or measurement based quantum computation. We define Z-state basis as a set of orthonormal states which are as equally entangled as the cluster states. We design new quantum circuits to non-destructively discriminate these highly entangled Z-states. The proposed quantum circuits can be generalized for N-qubit …
We consider a family of continuous variable (CV) states being a superposition of displaced number states with equal modulo but opposite in sign displacement amplitudes. Either an even or odd CV state is mixed with a delocalized photon at a beam splitter with arbitrary transmittance and reflectance coefficients with the subsequent registration of the measurement outcome in an auxiliary mode to deterministically generate hybrid entanglement. We show that at certain values of the experimental parameters maximally entangled states are generated. The considered approach is also applicable to trunca…
For every $d \geq 2$, we present a generalization of the CHSH inequality with the property that maximal violation self-tests the maximally entangled state of local dimension $d$. This is the first example of a family of inequalities with this property. Moreover, we provide a conjecture for a family of inequalities generalizing the tilted CHSH inequalities, and we conjecture that for each pure bipartite entangled state there is an inequality in the family whose maximal violation self-tests it. All of these inequalities are inspired by the self-testing correlations of [Nat. Comm. 8, 15485 (2017)…
Bipartite maximally entangled states have the property that the largest Schmidt coefficient reaches its lower bound. However, for multipartite states the standard Schmidt decomposition generally does not exist. We use a generalized Schmidt decomposition and the geometric measure of entanglement to characterize three-qubit pure states and derive a single-parameter family of maximally entangled three-qubit states. The paradigmatic Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) and W states emerge as extreme members in this family of maximally entangled states. This family of states possess different trends o…
Every dXd bipartite system is shown to have a large family of undistillable states with nonpositive partial transpose (NPPT). This family subsumes the family of conjectured NPPT bound entangled Werner states. In particular, all one-copy undistillable NPPT Werner states are shown to be bound entangled.
We introduce a new family of indecomposable positive linear maps based on entangled quantum states. Central to our construction is the notion of an unextendible product basis. The construction lets us create indecomposable positive linear maps in matrix algebras of arbitrary high dimension.
We consider whether two copies of a noisy entangled state can be transformed into a single copy of greater purity using local operations and classical communication. We show that it is never possible to achieve such a purification with certainty when the family of noisy states is twirlable (i.e. when there exists a local transformation that maps all states into the family, yet leaves the family itself invariant). This implies that two copies of a Werner state cannot be deterministically purified. Furthermore, due to the construction of the proof, it will hold not only in quantum theory, but in…
We consider a family of vector and operator norms defined by the Schmidt decomposition theorem for quantum states. We use these norms to tackle two fundamental problems in quantum information theory: the classification problem for k-positive linear maps and entanglement witnesses, and the existence problem for non-positive partial transpose bound entangled states. We begin with an analysis of the norms, showing that the vector norms can be explicitly calculated, and we derive several inequalities in order to bound the operator norms and compute them in special cases. We then use the norms to e…
We describe quantum circuits generating four-qubit maximally entangled states, the amount of entanglement being quantified by using the absolute value of the Cayley hyperdeterminant as an entanglement monotone. More precisely, we show that this type of four-qubit entangled states can be obtained by the action of a family of CNOT circuits on some special states of the LU orbit of the state |0000 >.

We derive a family of necessary separability criteria for finite-dimensional systems based on inequalities for variances of observables. We show that every pure bipartite entangled state violates some of these inequalities. Furthermore, a family of bound entangled states and true multipartite entangled states can be detected. The inequalities also allow to distinguish between different classes of true tripartite entanglement for qubits. We formulate an equivalent criterion in terms of covariance matrices. This allows us to apply criteria known from the regime of continuous variables to finite-…
Witness Operator Provides Better Estimate of the Lower Bound of Concurrence of Bipartite Bound Entangled States in $d_{1}\otimes d_{2}$ Dimensional System
We provide a family of Non-Gaussian pure entangled states in a bipartite system as the eigen states of a quadratic Hamiltonian composed of the Einstein-Podolsky-and-Rosen-like operators. The ground state of the Hamiltonian corresponds to the two-mode-squeezed vacuum state, and belongs to the Gaussian states. In contrast, all of the excited states are Non-Gaussian states. A separable inequality maximally violated by the eigen states is derived.
We present a family of three-qubit quantum states with a basic local hidden variable model. Any von Neumann measurement can be described by a local model for these states. We show that some of these states are genuine three-partite entangled and also distillable. The generalization for larger dimensions or higher number of parties is also discussed. As a byproduct, we present symmetric extensions of two-qubit Werner states.
We consider a single copy of a pure four-partite state of qubits and investigate its behaviour under the action of stochastic local quantum operations assisted by classical communication (SLOCC). This leads to a complete classification of all different classes of pure states of four-qubits. It is shown that there exist nine families of states corresponding to nine different ways of entangling four qubits. The states in the generic family give rise to GHZ-like entanglement. The other ones contain essentially 2- or 3-qubit entanglement distributed among the four parties. The concept of concurren…
We introduce a new family of separability criteria that are based on the existence of extensions of a bipartite quantum state $ρ$ to a larger number of parties satisfying certain symmetry properties. It can be easily shown that all separable states have the required extensions, so the non-existence of such an extension for a particular state implies that the state is entangled. One of the main advantages of this approach is that searching for the extension can be cast as a convex optimization problem known as a semidefinite program (SDP). Whenever an extension does not exist, the dual optimiza…
In this letter, we report a polarization-entangled photon-pair source based on type-II spontaneous parametric down conversion at telecom O-band in periodically poled silica fiber (PPSF). The photon-pair source exhibits more than 130 nm (~24 THz) emission bandwidth centered at 1306.6 nm. The broad emission spectrum results in a short biphoton correlation time and we experimentally demonstrate a Hong-Ou-Mandel interference dip with a full width of 26.6 fs at half maximum. Owing to the low birefringence of the PPSF, the biphotons generated from type-II SPDC are polarization-entangled over the ent…
We present a Bell-type inequality for four-qubit systems. Using the inequality we investigate quantum nonlocality of a generic family of states $\left|G_{abcd}\right >$ [Phys. Rev. A 65, 052112 (2002)] and several canonical four-qubit entangled states. It has been demonstrated that the inequality is maximally violated by so called "four-qubit maximal entangled state $\left|G_{m}\right >$" and it is also violated by the four-qubit W state and a special family of states $\left|G_{ab00}\right >$. Moreover, a useful entanglement-nonlocality relationship for the family of states $\left|G_{ab00}\rig…
A recent experiment presented, for photons, the first violation of a Bell inequality closing the fair-sampling loophole, i.e., without having to assume that the sample of measured photons fairly represents the entire ensemble. In this note, we discuss a detailed quantum mechanical model for the experimental data. Within experimental error the experiment agrees with quantum mechanical prediction. We also discuss the effects of drifting laser intensity and show that it could not have mimicked a violation of the Bell inequality. Therefore, the experiment was immune to the "production-rate loophol…
We exhibit a two-parameter family of bipartite mixed states $ρ_{bc}$, in a $d\otimes d$ Hilbert space, which are negative under partial transposition (NPT), but for which we conjecture that no maximally entangled pure states in $2\otimes 2$ can be distilled by local quantum operations and classical communication (LQ+CC). Evidence for this undistillability is provided by the result that, for certain states in this family, we cannot extract entanglement from any arbitrarily large number of copies of $ρ_{bc}$ using a projection on $2\otimes 2$. These states are canonical NPT states in the sense t…
We present a strategy for implementing multiparty-controlled remote state preparation (MCRSP) for a family of four-qubit cluster-type states with genuine entanglements while employing, Greenberg-Horne-Zeilinger-class states as quantum channels. In this scenario, the encoded information is transmitted from the sender to a spatially separated receiver via the control of multi-party. Predicated on the collaboration of all participants, the desired state can be entirely restored within the receiver's place with high success probability by application of appropriate local operations and necessary c…
One of the important approaches to detect quantum entanglement is using linear entanglement witnesses EWs. In this paper, by determining the envelope of the boundary hyper-planes defined by a family of linear EWs, a set of powerful nonlinear optimal EWs is manipulated. These EWs enable us to detect some three qubits bound MUB (mutually unbiased bases) diagonal entangled states, i.e., the PPT (positive partial transpose) entangled states. Also, in some particular cases, the introduced nonlinear optimal EWs are powerful enough to separate the bound entangled regions from the separable ones. Fina…
We present the full experimental reconstruction of Gaussian entangled states generated by a type--II optical parametric oscillator (OPO) below threshold. Our scheme provides the entire covariance matrix using a single homodyne detector and allows for the complete characterization of bipartite Gaussian states, including the evaluation of purity, entanglement and nonclassical photon correlations, without a priori assumptions on the state under investigation. Our results show that single homodyne schemes are convenient and robust setups for the full characterization of OPO signals and represent a…
Entanglement is a universal resource in quantum networks, yet entangled photon sources are typically custom-made for a specific use case. Versatility, both in terms of state modulation and tunability of the temporal properties of the photons, is the key to flexible network architectures and cryptographic primitives that go beyond quantum key distribution. Here, we report on a flexible source design that produces high-quality entanglement in continuous-wave and GHz-rate-pulsed operation modes. Utilizing off-the-shelf optical components, our approach uses a fiber-based Sagnac loop to generate po…
We introduce a family of tensor network states that we term semi-injective Projected Entangled-Pair States (PEPS). They extend the class of injective PEPS and include other states, like the ground states of the AKLT and the CZX models in square lattices. We construct parent Hamiltonians for which semi-injective PEPS are unique ground states. We also determine the necessary and sufficient conditions for two tensors to generate the same family of such states in two spatial dimensions. Using this result, we show that the third cohomology labeling of Symmetry Protected Topological phases extends t…
We apply the support vector machine (SVM) algorithm to derive a set of entanglement witnesses (EW) to identify entanglement patterns in families of four-qubit states. The effectiveness of SVM for practical EW implementations stems from the coarse-grained description of families of equivalent entangled quantum states. The equivalence criteria in our work is based on the stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC) classification and the description of the four-qubit entangled Werner states. We numerically verify that the SVM approach provides an effective tool to address the …
We introduce a family of states, the fPEPS, which describes fermionic systems on lattices in arbitrary spatial dimensions. It constitutes the natural extension of another family of states, the PEPS, which efficiently approximate ground and thermal states of spin systems with short-range interactions. We give an explicit mapping between those families, which allows us to extend previous simulation methods to fermionic systems. We also show that fPEPS naturally arise as exact ground states of certain fermionic Hamiltonians. We give an example of such a Hamiltonian, exhibiting criticality while o…
We demonstrate that single-photon as well as biphoton revivals are possible in a new class of dynamic optical systems-the so-called Glauber-Fock oscillator lattices. In these arrays, both Bloch-like oscillations and dynamic delocalization can occur which can be described in closed form. The bunching and anti-bunching response of path-entangled photons can be pre-engineered in such coupled optical arrangements and the possibility of emulating Fermionic behavior in this family of lattices is also considered. We elucidate these effects via pertinent examples and we discuss the prospect of experim…
Vaidman has proposed a controversial criterion for determining the past of a single quantum particle based on the "weak trace" it leaves. We here consider more general examples of entangled systems and analyze the past of single, as well as pairs of entangled pre- and postselected particles. Systems with non-trivial time evolution are also analyzed. We argue that in these cases, examining only the single-particle weak trace provides information which is insufficient for understanding the system as a whole. We therefore suggest to examine, alongside with the past of single particles, also the p…
We construct entanglement witnesses with regard to the geometric structure of the Hilbert--Schmidt space and investigate the geometry of entanglement. In particular, for a two--parameter family of two--qutrit states that are part of the magic simplex we calculate the Hilbert--Schmidt measure of entanglement. We present a method to detect bound entanglement which is illustrated for a three--parameter family of states. In this way we discover new regions of bound entangled states. Furthermore we outline how to use our method to distinguish entangled from separable states.
Recently [Karimipour and Memarzadeh, PhysRevA 73, 012329 (2006)] posed the problem of finding a continuous family of orthonormal bases in a bipartite space of two identical systems with the following properties: i) in each basis, all states have to be equally entangled, and ii) the family continuously interpolate between the product basis and the maximally entangled basis. The authors provided a necessary condition and simple examples for relatively small dimensions, but questioned the existence of a general solution for arbitrary dimensions. Employing the properties of quadratic Gauss sums, w…
We report on the first experimental realization of the entanglement witness for polarization entangled photons. It represents a recently discovered significant quantum information protocol which is based on few local measurements. The present demonstration has been applied to the so-called Werner states, a family of ''mixed'' quantum states that include both entangled and non entangled states. These states have been generated by a novel high brilliance source of entanglement which allows to continuously tune the degree of mixedness.
Bound entangled (BE) states are strange in nature: non-zero amount of free entanglement is required to create them but no free entanglement can be distilled from them under local operations and classical communication (LOCC). Even though usefulness of such states has been shown in several information processing tasks, there exists no simple method to characterize them for an arbitrary composite quantum system. Here we present a $(d-3)/2$-parameter family of BE states each with positive partial transpose (PPT). This family of PPT-BE states is introduced by constructing an unextendible product b…
We discuss the generation of states close to the boundary-family of maximally entangled mixed states as defined by the use of concurrence and linear entropy. The coupling of two qubits to a dissipation-affected bosonic mode is able to produce a bipartite state having, for all practical purposes, the entanglement and purity properties of one of such boundary states. We thoroughly study the effects that thermal and squeezed character of the bosonic mode have in such a process and we discuss tolerance to qubit phase-damping mechanisms. The non-demanding nature of the scheme makes it realizable in…
Quantum teleportation faces increasingly demanding requirements for transmitting large or even entangled systems. However, knowledge of the state to be transmitted eases its reconstruction, resulting in a protocol known as remote state preparation. A number of experimental demonstrations to date have been restricted to single-qubit systems. We report the remote preparation of two-qubit "hybrid" entangled states, including a family of vector-polarization beams. Our single-photon states are encoded in the photon spin and orbital angular momentum. We reconstruct the states by spin-orbit state tom…
It has been shown by Versraete et. al [F. Versraete, J. Dehaene, B. De Moor, and H. Verschelde, Phys. Rev. A65, 052112 (2002)] that by stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC), a pure state of four qubits can be transformed to a state belonging to one of a set of nine families of states. By using selective partial transposition, we construct partial K-way negativities to measure the genuine 4-partite, tripartite, and bi-partite entanglement of single copy states belonging to the nine families of four qubit states. Partial K-way negativities are polynomial functions of lo…
Quantum nonlocality of several four-qubit states is investigated by constructing a new Bell inequality. These include the Greenberger-Zeilinger-Horne (GHZ) state, W state, cluster state, and the state $|χ>$ that has been recently proposed in [PRL, {\bf 96}, 060502 (2006)]. The Bell inequality is optimally violated by $|χ>$ but not violated by the GHZ state. The cluster state also violates the Bell inequality though not optimally. The state $|χ>$ can thus be discriminated from the cluster state by using the inequality. Different aspects of four-partite entanglement are also studied by consideri…
We show that with a new family of pyramidal site-controlled InGaAsN quantum dots it is possible to obtain areas containing as much as 15% of polarization-entangled photon emitters - a major improvement if compared to the small fraction achievable by other quantum dot systems. Entanglement is attested by a two-photon polarization state density matrix and the parameters obtained from it. Emitters showing fidelities up to 0.721+-0.043 were found.
We introduce a protocol that maps finite-dimensional pure input states onto approximately Gaussian states in an iterative procedure. This protocol can be used to distill highly entangled bi-partite Gaussian states from a supply of weakly entangled pure Gaussian states. The entire procedure requires only the use of passive optical elements and photon detectors that solely distinguish between the presence and absence of photons.
We study the degree of entanglement of arbitrary superpositions of $m,n$ photon-added coherent states (PACS) $|ψ\rangle \propto u |α,m\rangle |β,n \rangle+ v |β,n\rangle |α,m\rangle$ using the concurrence, and obtain the general conditions for maximal entanglement. We show that photon addition process can be identified as an entanglement enhancer operation for superpositions of coherent states (SCS). Specifically for the known bipartite positive SCS: $|ψ\rangle \propto |α\rangle_a |-α\rangle_b + |-α\rangle_a |α\rangle_b $ whose entanglement tends to zero for $α\to 0$, can be maximal if al leas…
We analyze a class of entangled states for bipartite $d \otimes d$ systems, with $d$ non-prime. The entanglement of such states is revealed by the construction of canonically associated entanglement witnesses. The structure of the states is very simple and similar to the one of isotropic states: they are a mixture of a separable and a pure entangled state whose supports are orthogonal. Despite such simple structure, in an opportune interval of the mixing parameter their entanglement is not revealed by partial transposition nor by the realignment criterion, i.e. by any permutational criterion i…
A model of single photon detection, illustrated by a photon-absorbing superfluid or superconducting microvolume, is formulated as a cascading pair of quantum phase transitions. In the first, the microvolume transitions to the normal state upon photon absorption, resulting in a superposition of macrostates depending on whether the photon is absorbed or not. The second enables subsequent "wavefunction collapse," producing a density matrix implementing the Born probability rule. Next, EPR-type measurements on space-like separated entangled photon pairs are considered. It is argued that macro-enta…
The violation of a Bell inequality is an experimental observation that forces one to abandon a local realistic worldview, namely, one in which physical properties are (probabilistically) defined prior to and independent of measurement and no physical influence can propagate faster than the speed of light. All such experimental violations require additional assumptions depending on their specific construction making them vulnerable to so-called "loopholes." Here, we use photons and high-efficiency superconducting detectors to violate a Bell inequality closing the fair-sampling loophole, i.e. wi…
Stokes parameters are a standard tool in quantum optics. They involve averaged intensities at exits of polarizers. If the overall measured intensity fluctuates, as e.g. for states with undefined photon numbers, the instances of its increased value contribute more to the parameters. One can introduce normalized quantum Stokes operators. Operationally, for a given single run of the experiment, their values are differences of measured intensities (or photon numbers) at the two exits of a polarizer divided by their sum. Effects of intensity fluctuations are removed. Switching to normalized Stokes …
We propose a way to prepare Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) entangled photon Fock states of three cavities, by using a superconducting flux qutrit coupled to the cavities. This proposal does not require the use of classical microwave pulses and measurement during the entire operation. Thus, the operation is greatly simplified and the circuit engineering complexity and cost is much reduced. The proposal is quite general and can be applied to generate three-cavity GHZ entangled photon Fock states when the three cavities are coupled by a different three-level physical system such as a supercond…
We present a new family of bound-entangled quantum states in 3x3 dimensions. Their density matrix depends on 7 independent parameters and has 4 different non-vanishing eigenvalues.
