We associate to each unital $C^*$-algebra $A$ a geometric object---a diagram of topological spaces representing quotient spaces of the noncommutative space underlying $A$---meant to serve the role of a generalized Gel'fand spectrum. After showing that any functor $F$ from compact Hausdorff spaces to a suitable target category can be applied directly to these geometric objects to automatically yield an extension $\tilde{F}$ which acts on all unital $C^*$-algebras, we compare a novel formulation of the operator $K_0$ functor to the extension $\tilde K$ of the topological $K$-functor.
In this paper we study contravariant functors from the category of rings to the category of sets whose restriction to the full subcategory of commutative rings is isomorphic to the prime spectrum functor Spec. The main result reveals a common characteristic of these functors: every such functor assigns the empty set to M_n(C) for n >= 3. The proof relies, in part, on the Kochen-Specker Theorem of quantum mechanics. The analogous result for noncommutative extensions of the Gelfand spectrum functor for C*-algebras is also proved.
A covariant functor from the category of generic complex algebraic curves to a category of the AF-algebras is constructed. The construction is based on a representation of the Teichmueller space of a curve by the measured foliations due to Douady, Hubbard, Masur and Thurston. The functor maps isomorphic algebraic curves to the stably isomorphic AF-algebras.
We discuss various aspects of noncommutative geometry of a smooth subalgebra of the Toeplitz algebra. In particular, we study the structure of derivations on this subalgebra.
Observable properties of a classical physical system can be modelled deterministically as functions from the space of pure states to outcomes; dually, states can be modelled as functions from the algebra of observables to outcomes. The probabilistic predictions of quantum physics are contextual in that they preclude this classical assumption of reality: noncommuting observables, which are not assumed to be comeasurable, cannot be consistently ascribed deterministic values even if one enriches the description of a quantum state. Here, we consider the geometrically dual objects of noncommutative…
We define and study smooth subalgebras of Bunce-Deddens C*-algebras. We discuss various aspects of noncommutative geometry of Bunce-Deddens algebras including derivations on smooth subalgebras, as well as K-Theory and K-Homology.

We discuss the Fubini formula in Alain Connes' noncommutative geometry. We present a sufficient condition on spectral triples for which a Fubini formula holds true. The condition is natural and related to heat semigroup asymptotics. We provide examples of spectral triples for which the Fubini formula fails.
We review basic notions and methods of noncommutative geometry and their applications to analysis and geometry on foliated manifolds.
We use compactifications of C*-algebras to introduce noncommutative coarse geometry. We transfer a noncommutative coarse structure on a C*-algebra with an action of a locally compact Abelian group by translations to Rieffel deformations and prove that the resulting noncommutative coarse spaces are coarsely equivalent. We construct a noncommutative coarse structure from a cocompact continuously square-integrable action of a group and show that this is coarsely equivalent to the standard coarse structure on the group in question. We define noncommutative coarse maps through certain completely po…

This article is an introductory survey of index theory in the context of noncommutative geometry, written for the occasion of the 70th birthday of Alain Connes.
We study non-linear $σ$-models defined on noncommutative torus as a two dimensional string world-sheet. We consider a quantum group as a noncommutative space-time as well as two points, a circle, and a noncommutative torus. Using the establised results we show that the trivial harmonic unitaries of the noncommutative chiral model, which are known as local minima, are not global minima by comparing those with the symmetric unitaries coming from instanton solutions of noncommutative Ising model, which corresponds to the two points target space. In addition,we introduce a $\mathbb{Z}^2$-action on…
We give a survey on higher invariants in noncommutative geometry and their applications to differential geometry and topology.
This is a chapter in an incoming book on aperiodic order. We review results about the topology, the dynamics, and the combinatorics of aperiodically ordered tilings obtained with the tools of noncommutative geometry.
We build a toy model of differential geometry on the real line, which includes derivatives of the second order. Such construction is possible only within the framework of noncommutative geometry. We introduce the metric and briefly discuss two simple physical models of scalar field theory and gauge theory in this geometry.
In this paper we explain how to define "lower dimensional'' volumes of any compact Riemannian manifold as the integrals of local Riemannian invariants. For instance we give sense to the area and the length of such a manifold in any dimension. Our reasoning is motivated by an idea of Connes and involves in an essential way noncommutative geometry and the analysis of Dirac operators on spin manifolds. However, the ultimate definitions of the lower dimensional volumes don't involve noncommutative geometry or spin structures at all.
The results of this paper are outdated. Finer versions of them will appear elsewhere.
The book covers basics of noncommutative geometry and its applications in topology, algebraic geometry and number theory. A brief survey of main parts of noncommutative geometry with historical remarks, bibliography and a list of exercises is attached. Our notes are intended for the graduate students and faculty with interests in noncommutative geometry; they can be read by non-experts in the field.
Motivated by the search for new examples of ``noncommutative manifolds'', we study the noncommutative geometry (in the sense of Connes) of the group C*-algebra of the three dimensional discrete Heisenberg group. We present a unified treatment of the K-homology, cyclic cohomology and derivations of this algebra.
Noncommutative geometry (NCG) is a branch of mathematics concerned with a geometric approach to noncommutative algebras, and with the construction of spaces that are locally presented by noncommutative algebras of functions (possibly in some generalized sense). A noncommutative algebra is an associative algebra in which the multiplication is not commutative, that is, for which $xy$ does not always equal $yx$; or more generally an algebraic structure in which one of the principal binary operations is not commutative; one also allows additional structures, e.g. topology or norm, to be possibly c…
This text is an introduction to a few selected areas of Alain Connes' noncommutative geometry written for the volume of the school/conference "Noncommutative Geometry 2005" held at IPM Tehran. It is an expanded version of my lectures which was directed at graduate students and novice in the subject.
Quantum groups and quantum homogeneous spaces - developed by several authors since the 80's - provide a large class of examples of algebras which for many reasons we interpret as `coordinate algebras' over noncommutative spaces. This dissertation is an attempt to understand them from the point of view of Connes' noncommutative geometry.
We study a first variation formula for the eigenvalues of the Laplacian evolving under the Ricci flow in a simple example of a noncommutative matrix geometry, namely a finite dimensional representation of a noncommutative torus. In order to do so, we first show that the Ricci flow in this matrix geometry is analytic.
We construct a functor from the category of elliptic curves to a category of noncommutative tori. Our proof is based on an isomorphism between the Sklyanin algebras and dense sub-algebras of the noncommutative tori.
This is the text of a series of five lectures given by the author at the "Second Annual Spring Institute on Noncommutative Geometry and Operator Algebras" held at Vanderbilt University in May 2004. It is meant as an overview of recent results illustrating the interplay between noncommutative geometry and arithmetic geometry/number theory.
This paper gives a short and historical survey on the theory of pure motives in algebraic geometry and reviews some of the recent developments of this theory in noncommutative geometry. The second part of the paper outlines the new theory of endomotives and some of its relevant applications in number-theory.
The Jaffe-Lesniewski-Osterwalder (JLO) character is a homomorphism from K-homology to entire cyclic cohomology. This paper extends the domain of the JLO character to include Type II noncommutative geometry, the geometry represented by unbounded $θ$-summable Breuer-Fredholm modules; and shows that the JLO character coincides with the Chern-Connes character as a class in entire cyclic cohomolgoy.
We present a definition of Riemannian manifold in noncommutative geometry. Using products of unbounded Kasparov modules, we show one can obtain such Riemannian manifolds from noncommutative spin^c manifolds; and conversely, in the presence of a spin^c structure. We also show how to obtain an analogue of Kasparov's fundamental class for a Riemannian manifold, and the associated notion of Poincaré duality. Along the way we clarify the bimodule and first-order conditions for spectral triples.
Following the general principles of noncommutative geometry, it is possible to define a metric on the space of pure states of the noncommutative algebra generated by the coordinates. This metric generalizes the usual Riemannian one. We investigate some general properties of this metric in the finite commutative case which corresponds to a metric on a finite set, and also give some examples of computations in both commutative and noncommutative cases.
This text is written for the volume of the school/conference "Noncommutative Geometry 2005" held at IPM Tehran. It gives a survey of methods and results in noncommutative geometry, based on a discussion of significant examples of noncommutative spaces in geometry, number theory, and physics. The paper also contains an outline (the ``Tehran program'') of ongoing joint work with Consani on the noncommutative geometry of the adeles class space and its relation to number theoretic questions.
Our understanding of the notion of curvature in a noncommutative setting has progressed substantially in the past ten years. This new episode in noncommutative geometry started when a Gauss-Bonnet theorem was proved by Connes and Tretkoff for a curved noncommutative two torus. Ideas from spectral geometry and heat kernel asymptotic expansions suggest a general way of defining local curvature invariants for noncommutative Riemannian type spaces where the metric structure is encoded by a Dirac type operator. To carry explicit computations however one needs quite intriguing new ideas. We give an …
Spectral triples over noncommutative principal $\T^n$-bundles are studied, extending recent results about the noncommutative geometry of principal U(1)-bundles. We relate the noncommutative geometry of the total space of the bundle with the geometry of the base space. Moreover, strong connections are used to build new Dirac operators. We discuss as a particular case the commutative case, the noncommutative tori and theta deformed manifolds.
