Relaxation dynamics of embedded metal nanoparticles after ultrafast laser pulse excitation is driven by thermal phenomena of different origins the accurate description of which is crucial for interpreting experimental results: hot electron gas generation, electron-phonon coupling, heat transfer to the particle environment and heat propagation in the latter. Regardingthis last mechanism, it is well known that heat transport in nanoscale structures and/or at ultrashort timescales may deviate from the predictions of the Fourier law. In these cases heat transport may rather be described by the Boltzmann transport equation. We present a numerical model allowing us to determine the electron and lattice temperature dynamics in a spherical gold nanoparticle core under subpicosecond pulsed excitation, as well as that of the surrounding shell dielectric medium. For this, we have used the electron-phonon coupling equation in the particle with a source term linked with the laser pulse absorption, and the ballistic-diffusive equations for heat conduction in the host medium. Either thermalizing or adiabatic boundary conditions have been considered at the shell external surface. Our results show that the heat transfer rate from the particle to the matrix can be significantly smaller than the prediction of Fourier's law. Consequently, the particle temperature rise is larger and its cooling dynamics might be slower than that obtained by using Fourier's law. This difference is attributed to the nonlocal and nonequilibrium heat conduction in the vicinity of the core nanoparticle. These results are expected to be of great importance for analyzing pump-probe experiments performed on single nanoparticles or nanocomposite media.
The femtosecond evolution of the electronic temperature of laser-excited gold nanoparticles is measured, by means of ultrafast time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy induced by extreme-ultraviolet radiation pulses. The temperature of the electron gas is deduced by recording and fitting high-resolution photo emission spectra around the Fermi edge of gold nanoparticles providing a direct, unambiguous picture of the ultrafast electron-gas dynamics. These results will be instrumental to the refinement of existing models of femtosecond processes in laterally-confined and bulk condensed-matter sys…
The full control of the fundamental photophysics of nanosystems at frequencies as high as few THz is key for tunable and ultrafast nano-photonic devices and metamaterials. Here we combine geometrical and ultrafast control of the optical properties of halide perovskite nanoparticles, which constitute a prominent platform for nanophotonics. The pulsed photoinjection of free carriers across the semiconducting gap leads to a sub-picosecond modification of the far-field electromagnetic properties that is fully controlled by the geometry of the system. When the nanoparticle size is tuned so as to ac…
Understanding and controlling properties of plasmon-induced hot carriers is a key step towards next-generation photovoltaic and photocatalytic devices. Here, we uncover a route to engineering hot-carrier generation rates of silver nanoparticles by designed embedding in dielectric host materials. Extending our recently established quantum-mechanical approach to describe the decay of quantized plasmons into hot carriers we capture both external screening by the nanoparticle environment and internal screening by silver d-electrons through an effective electron-electron interaction. We find that h…

The possibility of controlling the domain structure in spherical nanoparticles of uniaxial and multiaxial ferroelectrics using a shell with tunable dielectric properties is studied in the framework of Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory. Finite element modeling and analytical calculations are performed for Sn2P2S6 and BaTiO3 nanoparticles covered with high-k polymer, temperature dependent isotropic paraelectric strontium titanate, or anisotropic liquid crystal shells with a strongly temperature dependent dielectric permittivity tensor. It appeared that the tunable paraelectric shell with a tempe…

Controlling the transport, trapping, and filtering of nanoparticles is important for many applications. By virtue of their weak response to gravity and their thermal motion, various physical mechanisms can be exploited for such operations on nanoparticles. However, the manipulation based on optical forces is potentially most appealing since it constitutes a highly deterministic approach. Plasmonic nanostructures have been suggested for this purpose, but they possess the disadvantages of locally generating heat and trapping the nanoparticles directly on surface. Here, we propose the use of diel…
Heat transfer from irradiated metallic nanoparticles is relevant to a broad array of applications ranging from water desalination to photoacoustics. The efficacy of such processes relies on the ability of these nanoparticles to absorb the pulsed illuminating light and to quickly transfer energy to the environment. Here we show that compared to homogeneous gold nanoparticles having the same size, gold-silica core-shell nanoparticles enable heat transfers to liquid water that are faster. We reach this conclusion by considering both analytical and numerical calculations. The key factor explaining…
Using femtosecond optical pulses, we have investigated the ultrafast magnetization dynamics induced in a dielectric film of bismuth-substituted yttrium iron garnet (Bi-YIG) buried below a thick Cu/Pt metallic bilayer. We show that exciting the sample from Pt surface launches an acoustic strain pulse propagating into the garnet film. We discovered that this strain pulse induces a coherent magnetization precession in the Bi-YIG at the frequency of the ferromagnetic resonance. The observed phenomena can be explain by strain-induced changes of magnetocristalline anisotropy via the inverse magnetos…
Gold nanoparticles emit broad-band upconverted luminescence upon irradiation with pulsed infrared laser radiation. Although the phenomenon is widely observed, considerable disagreement still exists concerning the underlying physics - most notably over the applicability of concepts such as multiphoton absorption, inelastic scattering, and interband and intraband electronic transitions. Here, we study single particles and small clusters of particles by employing a spectrally resolved power-law analysis of the irradiation-dependent emission as a sensitive probe of these physical models. Two regim…
We examine the ultrafast optical response of the crystalline and amorphous phases of the phase change material Ge$_2$Sb$_2$Te$_5$ below the phase transformation threshold. Simultaneous measurement of the transmissivity and reflectivity of thin film samples yields the time-dependent evolution of the dielectric function for both phases. We then identify how lattice motion and electronic excitation manifest in the dielectric response. The dielectric response of both phases is large but markedly different. At 800 nm, the changes in amorphous GST are well described by the Drude response of the gene…
We demonstrate that highly-ordered two-dimensional crystals of ligand-capped gold nanoparticles display a local photo-mechanical stiffness as high as that of solids such as graphite. In out-of equilibrium electron diffraction experiments, a strong temperature jump is induced in a thin film with a femtosecond laser pulse. The initial electronic excitation transfers energy to the underlying structural degrees of freedom, with a rate generally proportional to the stiffness of the material. With femtosecond small-angle electron diffraction, we observe the temporal evolution of the diffraction feat…
In metal nanoparticles (NPs) supracrystals, the metallic core provides some key properties, e.g. magnetization, plasmonic response or conductivity, with the ligand molecules giving rise to others like solubility, assembly or interaction with biomolecules. The formation of these supracrystals depends on a complex interplay between many forces, some stemming from the core, some from the ligands. At present, there is no known approach to characterize the local order of ligand molecules or their dynamics with atomic spatial resolution. Here, we develop a methodology based on small-angle ultrafast …
We theoretically analyse the hybrid Mie-exciton optical modes arising from the strong coupling of excitons in organic dyes or transition-metal dichalcogenides with the Mie resonances of high-index dielectric nanoparticles. Detailed analytic calculations show that silicon--exciton core--shell nanoparticles are characterised by a richness of optical modes which can be tuned through nanoparticle dimensions to produce large anticrossings in the visible or near infrared, comparable to those obtained in plexcitonics. The complex magnetic-excitonic nature of these modes is understood through spectral…
Characterizing and controlling the out-of-equilibrium state of nanostructured Mott insulators hold great promises for emerging quantum technologies while providing an exciting playground for investigating fundamental physics of strongly-correlated systems. Here, we use two-colour near-field ultrafast electron microscopy to photo-induce the insulator-to-metal transition in a single VO2 nanowire and probe the ensuing electronic dynamics with combined nanometer-femtosecond resolution. We take advantage of a femtosecond temporal gating of the electron pulse mediated by an infrared laser pulse, and…
In the framework of the thermodynamic approach Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) combined with the equations of electrostatics, we investigated the effect of polarization surface screening on finite size effects of the phase diagrams, polar and dielectric properties of ferroelectric nanoparticles of different shapes. We obtained and analyzed the analytical results for the dependences of the ferroelectric phase transition temperature, critical size, spontaneous polarization and thermodynamic coercive field on the shape and size of nanoparticles. We develop multipolar theory of nonlinear generation of entangled photons from subwavelength dielectric particles due to the spontaneous parametric downconversion. We demonstrate that optical excitation in resonance with the high-quality supercavity mode of the aluminum gallium arsenide (AlGaAs) nanodisk leads to a strong enhancement of generation of entangled photon pairs associated with electric and magnetic dipole modes. Our rigorous numerical results are corroborated by an analytical model, universally describing formation of high-$Q$ resonant states and dark states due to the interference…

We consider a model of a nanocomposite based on non-interacting spherical single-domain ferroelectric nanoparticles of various sizes embedded in a dielectric matrix. The size distribution function of these nanoparticles is selected as a part of the Gaussian distribution from minimum to maximum radius (truncated normal distribution). For such nanocomposites, we calculate the dependences of the reversible part of the electric polarization, the electrocaloric temperature change, and the dielectric permittivity on the external electric field, which have the characteristic form of hysteresis loops.…
