We present a numerical model allowing to determine the electron and lattice temperature dynamics in a gold nanoparticle under subpicosecond pulsed excitation, as well as that of the surrounding medium. For this, we have used the electron-phonon coupling equation in the particle with a source term linked with the laser pulse, and the ballistic-diffusive equations for heat conduction in the host medium. Our results show that the heat transfer rate from the particle to the matrix is significantly smaller than the prediction of Fourier's law. Consequently, the particle temperature rise is much larger and its cooling dynamics is much slower than that obtained using Fourier's law, which is attributed to the nonlocal and nonequilibrium heat conduction in the vicinity of the nanoparticle. These results are expected to be of great importance for interpreting pump-probe experiments performed on single nanoparticles or nanocomposite media.
We report the studies of ultrafast electron nanocrystallography on size-selected Au nanoparticles (2-20 nm) supported on a molecular interface. Reversible surface melting, melting, and recrystallization were investigated with dynamical full-profile radial distribution functions determined with sub-picosecond and picometer accuracies. In an ultrafast photoinduced melting, the nanoparticles are driven to a non-equilibrium transformation, characterized by the initial lattice deformations, nonequilibrium electron-phonon coupling, and upon melting, the collective bonding and debonding, transforming…
We explore the influence of the nanoporous structure on the thermal relaxation of electrons and holes excited by ultrashort laser pulses ($\sim 7$ fs) in thin gold films. Plasmon decay into hot electron-hole pairs results in the generation of a Fermi-Dirac distribution thermalized at a temperature $T_{\mathrm{e}}$ higher than the lattice temperature $T_{\mathrm{l}}$. The relaxation times of the energy exchange between electrons and lattice, here measured by pump-probe spectroscopy, is slowed down by the nanoporous structure, resulting in much higher peak $T_{\mathrm{e}}$ than for bulk gold fil…
Ultrafast optical excitation of gold-cobalt bilayers triggers the nontrivial interplay between the electronic, acoustic, and magnetic degrees of freedom. Laser-heated electrons generated at the gold-air interface diffuse through the layer of gold and strongly overheat the lattice in cobalt resulting in the emission of ultrashort acoustic pulses and generation of exchange-coupled magnons. Time-resolved optical measurements allow for extracting the thermal boundary (Kapitza) resistances at metal/metal interfaces and the hot electron diffusion length in ferromagnetic materials. Both the experimen…
Spatially resolved measurements of quasi-ballistic precessional magnetic switching in a microstructure are presented. Crossing current wires allow detailed study of the precessional switching induced by coincident longitudinal and transverse magnetic field pulses. Though the response is initially spatially uniform, dephasing occurs leading to nonuniformity and transient demagnetization. This nonuniformity comes in spite of a novel method for suppression of end domains in remanence. The results have implications for the reliability of ballistic precessional switching in magnetic devices.
We measure nonlinear optical scattering from individual Au nanorods excited by ultrafast laser pulses on resonance with their longitudinal plasmon mode. Isolating single rods removes inhomogeneous broadening and allows the measurement of a large nonlinearity, much greater than that of nanorod ensembles. Surprisingly, the ultrafast nonlinearity can be attributed entirely to heating of conduction electrons and does not exhibit any response associated with coherent plasmon oscillation. This indicates a previously unobserved damping of strongly driven plasmons.
The femtosecond evolution of the electronic temperature of laser-excited gold nanoparticles is measured, by means of ultrafast time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy induced by extreme-ultraviolet radiation pulses. The temperature of the electron gas is deduced by recording and fitting high-resolution photo emission spectra around the Fermi edge of gold nanoparticles providing a direct, unambiguous picture of the ultrafast electron-gas dynamics. These results will be instrumental to the refinement of existing models of femtosecond processes in laterally-confined and bulk condensed-matter sys…
We report the investigation of the generation and detection of GHz coherent acoustic phonons in plasmonic gold nanoparticles superlattices (NPS). The experiments have been performed from an optical femtosecond pump-probe scheme across the optical plasmon resonance of the superlattice. Our experiments allow to estimate the collective elastic response (sound velocity) of the NPS as well as an estimate of the nano-contact elastic stiffness. It appears that the light-induced coherent acoustic phonon pulse has a typical in-depth spatial extension of about 45 nm which is roughly 4 times the optical …
We report ultrafast electron dynamics in gold nanorods investigated using 80 fs laser pulses centered at 1.57 eV. Five types of nanorod colloidal suspensions in water having their longitudinal surface plasmon peak (ELSP) on either side of the laser photon energy (EL) have been studied. For ELSP>EL, photo-induced absorption with single decay time constant is observed. On the other hand, for ELSP<EL, photo-bleaching is observed having biexponential decay dynamics; the faster one between 1-3 ps and slower one between 7ps to 22ps both of them increasing almost linearly with the difference |EL-ELSP…
We investigate the ultrafast electron dynamics triggered by terahertz and optical pulses in thin platinum and gold films by probing their transient optical reflectivity. The response of the platinum film to an intense terahertz pulse is similar to the optically-induced dynamics of both films and can be described by a two-temperature model. Surprisingly, gold can exhibit a much smaller terahertz pulse-induced reflectivity change and with opposite sign. For platinum, we estimate a 20% larger electron-phonon coupling for the terahertz-driven dynamics compared to the optically-induced one, which w…
A theoretical study is presented of the ballistic electron emission spectra (BEES) of individual insulating and conducting organic molecules chemisorbed on a silicon substrate and buried under a thin gold film. It is predicted that ballistic electrons injected into the gold film from a scanning tunneling microscope tip should be transmitted so weakly to the silicon substrate by alkane molecules of moderate length (decane, hexane) and their thiolates that individual buried molecules of this type will be difficult to detect in BEES experiments. However, resonant transmission by molecules contain…
Spin and charge-current dynamics after ultrafast spin-polarized excitation in a normal metal are studied theoretically using a wave-diffusion theory. It is shown analytically how this macroscopic approach correctly describes the ballistic and diffusive properties of spin and charge transport, but also applies to the intermediate regime between these two limits. Using the wave-diffusion equations we numerically analyze spin and charge dynamics after ultrafast excitation of spin polarized carriers in thin gold films. Assuming slightly spin-dependent momentum relaxation times, we find that a unif…
The out-of-equilibrium dynamics of electrons and phonons upon laser excitation are often described by the two-temperature model, which assumes that both subsystems are separately in thermal equilibrium. However, recent experiments show that this description is not sufficient to describe the out-of-equilibrium dynamics on ultrashort timescales. Here, we extend and apply a parameter-free microscopic out-of-equilibrium model to describe the ultrafast laser-induced system dynamics of archetypical metallic systems such as gold, aluminum, iron, nickel, and cobalt. We report strong deviations from th…
Harnessing short-lived photoexcited electron-hole pairs in metal nanostructures has the potential to define a new phase of optoelectronics, enabling control of athermal mechanisms for light harvesting, photodetection and photocatalysis. To date, however, the spatiotemporal dynamics and transport of these photoexcited carriers have been only qualitatively characterized. Plasmon excitation has been widely viewed as an efficient mechanism for generating non-thermal hot carriers. Despite numerous experiments, conclusive evidence elucidating and quantifying the full dynamics of hot carrier generati…
We demonstrate that the dispersion of surface plasmon polaritons in a periodically perforated gold film can be efficiently manipulated by femtosecond laser pulses with the wavelengths far from the intrinsic resonances of gold. Using a time- and frequency- resolved pump-probe technique we observe shifting of the plasmon polariton resonances with response times from 200 to 800 fs depending on the probe photon energy, through which we obtain comprehensive insight into the electron dynamics in gold. We show that Wood anomalies in the optical spectra provide pronounced resonances in differential tr…
Electronic excitations in a ferromagnet can trigger ultrafast spin dynamics with potential applications in a speed increase in magnetic recording. The project investigates ultrafast magnetization dynamics, which is driven in metallic layers by ballistic hot electrons. In a ferromagnet these electrons induce a change in the absolute value of the magnetization M through spin-dependent scattering. If the electrons are spin-polarized, scattering at the interface of a noble metal and a ferromagnet results in spin-transfer torque and hence modifies the direction of M. To reveal the underlying mechan…
Gold nanoparticles emit broad-band upconverted luminescence upon irradiation with pulsed infrared laser radiation. Although the phenomenon is widely observed, considerable disagreement still exists concerning the underlying physics - most notably over the applicability of concepts such as multiphoton absorption, inelastic scattering, and interband and intraband electronic transitions. Here, we study single particles and small clusters of particles by employing a spectrally resolved power-law analysis of the irradiation-dependent emission as a sensitive probe of these physical models. Two regim…
Excitation of coherent optical phonons in solids provides a pathway for ultrafast modulation of light on a sub-ps timescale. Here, we report on efficient 3.6 THz modulation of light reflected from hybrid metal/semiconductor plasmonic crystals caused by lattice vibrations in a few nm thick layer of elemental tellurium. We observe that surface plasmon polaritons contribute significantly to photoinduced formation of this thin layer at the interface between a telluride-based II-VI semiconductor, such as (Cd,Mg)Te or (Cd,Mn)Te, and a one-dimensional gold grating. The change in interface composition…
In metal nanoparticles (NPs) supracrystals, the metallic core provides some key properties, e.g. magnetization, plasmonic response or conductivity, with the ligand molecules giving rise to others like solubility, assembly or interaction with biomolecules. The formation of these supracrystals depends on a complex interplay between many forces, some stemming from the core, some from the ligands. At present, there is no known approach to characterize the local order of ligand molecules or their dynamics with atomic spatial resolution. Here, we develop a methodology based on small-angle ultrafast …
Fundamental interactions induced by lattice vibrations on ultrafast time scales become increasingly important for modern nanoscience and technology. Experimental access to the physical properties of acoustic phonons in the THz frequency range and over the entire Brillouin zone is crucial for understanding electric and thermal transport in solids and their compounds. Here, we report on the generation and nonlinear propagation of giant (1 percent) acoustic strain pulses in hybrid gold/cobalt bilayer structures probed with ultrafast surface plasmon interferometry. This new technique allows for un…
Metal-oxide-semiconductor junctions are central to most electronic and optoelectronic devices. Here, the element-specificity of broadband extreme ultraviolet (XUV) ultrafast pulses is used to measure the charge transport and recombination kinetics in each layer of a Ni-TiO2-Si junction. After photoexcitation of silicon, holes are inferred to transport from Si to Ni ballistically in ~100 fs, resulting in spectral shifts in the Ni M2,3 XUV edge that are characteristic of holes and the absence of holes initially in TiO2. Meanwhile, the electrons are observed to remain on Si. After picoseconds, th…
GaN is a key material for lighting technology. Yet, the carrier transport and ultrafast dynamics that are central in GaN light emitting devices are not completely understood. We present first-principles calculations of carrier dynamics in GaN, focusing on electron-phonon (e-ph) scattering and the cooling and nanoscale dynamics of hot carriers. We find that e-ph scattering is significantly faster for holes compared to electrons, and that for hot carriers with an initial 0.5$-$1 eV excess energy, holes take a significantly shorter time ($\sim$0.1 ps) to relax to the band edge compared to electro…
We demonstrate that highly-ordered two-dimensional crystals of ligand-capped gold nanoparticles display a local photo-mechanical stiffness as high as that of solids such as graphite. In out-of equilibrium electron diffraction experiments, a strong temperature jump is induced in a thin film with a femtosecond laser pulse. The initial electronic excitation transfers energy to the underlying structural degrees of freedom, with a rate generally proportional to the stiffness of the material. With femtosecond small-angle electron diffraction, we observe the temporal evolution of the diffraction feat…
Graphene is at the center of a significant research effort. Near-ballistic transport at room temperature and high mobility make it a potential material for nanoelectronics. Its electronic and mechanical properties are also ideal for micro and nanomechanical systems, thin-film transistors and transparent and conductive composites and electrodes. Here we exploit the optoelectronic properties of graphene to realize an ultrafast laser. A graphene-polymer composite is fabricated using wet-chemistry techniques. Pauli blocking following intense illumination results in saturable absorption, independen…
In this work, we present evidence for the existence of a magnonic current on the sub-picosecond time-scale in a ferrimagnetic bilayer and its effect on ultrafast spin dynamics. The ferrimagnet, GdFeCo, is a material known to undergo ultrafast switching within 1-2ps after excitation with femtosecond laser pulses. Here, we show that the strong thermal gradients induced by applying femtosecond laser pulses and the presence of chemical inhomogeneities lead to local imbalances in the effective temperatures of the spins that produces a rapid transfer of spin angular momentum, which we interpret as a…

We describe a theoretical approach for spin-polarized hot-electron transport, as it occurs after excitation by ultrafast optical pulses in heterostructures formed by ferromagnetic and normal metals. We formulate a spin-dependent particle-in-cell model that solves the Boltzmann equation for excited electrons. It includes lifetimes and transmission coefficients as parameters, which can be taken from ab-initio calculations or experiment, and can be easily extended to multilayer systems. This approach is capable of describing electron transport in the ballistic, super-diffusive and diffusive regim…
We describe the quantitative refinement of nanoparticle structures from gold nanoparticles probed by ultrafast electron crystallography (UEC). We establish the equivalence between the modified radial distribution function employed in UEC and the atomic pair distribution function (PDF) used in x-ray and neutron powder diffraction analysis. By leveraging PDF refinement techniques, we demonstrate that UEC data are of sufficient quality to differentiate between cuboctahedral, decahedral and icosahedral nanoparticle models. Furthermore, we identify the signatures of systematic errors that may occur…
Relaxation dynamics of embedded metal nanoparticles after ultrafast laser pulse excitation is driven by thermal phenomena of different origins the accurate description of which is crucial for interpreting experimental results: hot electron gas generation, electron-phonon coupling, heat transfer to the particle environment and heat propagation in the latter. Regardingthis last mechanism, it is well known that heat transport in nanoscale structures and/or at ultrashort timescales may deviate from the predictions of the Fourier law. In these cases heat transport may rather be described by the Bol…
The control of optically driven high-frequency strain waves in nanostructured systems is an essential ingredient for the further development of nanophononics. However, broadly applicable experimental means to quantitatively map such structural distortion on their intrinsic ultrafast time and nanometer length scales are still lacking. Here, we introduce ultrafast convergent beam electron diffraction (U-CBED) with a nanoscale probe beam for the quantitative retrieval of the time-dependent local distortion tensor. We demonstrate its capabilities by investigating the ultrafast acoustic deformation…
Here we carry out a first-principles time-dependent calculation to investigate how fast electrons actually move under laser excitation and how large the electron transport affects demagnetization on the shortest time scale. To take into account the transport effect, we implement the intraband transition in our theory. In the bulk fcc Ni, we find the effect of the spin transport on the demagnetization is extremely small, no more than 1\%. The collective electron velocity in Ni is 0.4 $\rm Å/fs$, much smaller than the Fermi velocity, and the collective displacement is no more than 0.1 $\rm Å$. B…
In ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) experiments, accurate retrieval of time-resolved structural parameters, such as atomic coordinates and thermal displacement parameters, requires an accurate scattering model. Unfortunately, kinematical models are often inaccurate even for relativistic electron probes, especially for dense, oriented single crystals where strong channeling and multiple scattering effects are present. This article introduces and demonstrates dynamical scattering models tailored for quantitative analysis of UED experiments performed on single-crystal films. As a case study, …

Phonon-phonon interaction is systematically studied by nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) formulism in momentum space at finite temperatures. Within the quasi-particle approximation, phonon frequency shift and lifetime are obtained from the retarded self-energy. The lowest order NEGF provides the same phonon lifetime as Fermi's golden rule. Thermal conductance is predicted by the Landauer formula with a phenomenological transmission function. The main advantage of our method is that it covers both ballistic and diffusive limits and thermal conductance of different system sizes can be easil…
Inorganic van der Waals bonded semiconductors like transition metal dichalcogenides are subject of intense research due to their electronic and optical properties which are promising for next-generation optoelectronic devices. In this context, understanding the ultrafast carrier dynamics, as well as charge and energy transfer at the interface between metals and semiconductors is crucial and yet quite unexplored. Here, we present an experimental study on how thermally induced ultrafast charge carrier injection affects the exciton formation dynamics in bulk WS2 by employing a pump-push-probe sch…
Current induced magnetization manipulation is a key issue for spintronic application. Therefore, deterministic switching of the magnetization at the picoseconds timescale with a single electronic pulse represents a major step towards the future developments of ultrafast spintronic. Here, we have studied the ultrafast magnetization dynamics in engineered Gdx[FeCo]1-x based structure to compare the effect of femtosecond laser and hot-electrons pulses. We demonstrate that a single femtosecond hot-electrons pulse allows a deterministic magnetization reversal in either Gd-rich and FeCo-rich alloys …
Eutectic related reaction is a special chemical/physical reaction involving multiple phases, solid and liquid. Visualization of phase reaction of composite nanomaterials with high spatial and temporal resolution provides a key understanding of alloy growth with important industrial applications. However, it has been a rather challenging task. Here we report the direct imaging and control of the phase reaction dynamics of a single, as-grown free-standing gallium arsenide nanowire encapped with a gold nanoparticle, free from environmental confinement or disturbance, using four-dimensional electr…
Copper (Cu), gold (Au) (111) crystals were illuminated with 120 fs pulses and probed by 600 fs X-ray pulses. Rocking curves were measured versus 267 nm (UV) pump- 0.154 nm probe delay time. Curve width broadening, peak diffracted intensity and angular shift were recorded for the range of UV excitation intensities of 2-8 mJ/cm2 . Observed oscillations in time delay dependences of shift, width and of peak intensity of rocking curves are correlated, as described by acoustic pulse bouncing between crystal surfaces. In (111) Au, acoustic pulse originates from pump absorption layer, and peak intensi…
Impacts of Hot Electron Diffusion, Electron-Phonon Coupling, and Surface Atoms on Metal Surface Dynamics Revealed by Reflection Ultrafast Electron Diffraction
The continuing miniaturization of microelectronics raises the prospect of nanometre-scale devices with mechanical and electrical properties that are qualitatively different from those at larger dimensions. The investigation of these properties, and particularly the increasing influence of quantum effects on electron transport, has therefore attracted much interest. Quantum properties of the conductance can be observed when `breaking' a metallic contact: as two metal electrodes in contact with each other are slowly retracted, the contact area undergoes structural rearrangements until it consist…
Heat transfer from irradiated metallic nanoparticles is relevant to a broad array of applications ranging from water desalination to photoacoustics. The efficacy of such processes relies on the ability of these nanoparticles to absorb the pulsed illuminating light and to quickly transfer energy to the environment. Here we show that compared to homogeneous gold nanoparticles having the same size, gold-silica core-shell nanoparticles enable heat transfers to liquid water that are faster. We reach this conclusion by considering both analytical and numerical calculations. The key factor explaining…
