Using a dynamical cluster quantum Monte Carlo approximation we investigate the d-wave superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ in the doped 2D repulsive Hubbard model with a weak inhomogeneity. The inhomogeneity is introduced in the hoppings $\tp$ and $t$ in the form of a checkerboard pattern where $t$ is the hopping within a $2\times2$ plaquette and $\tp$ is the hopping between the plaquettes. We find inhomogeneity suppresses $T_c$. The characteristic spin excitation energy and the strength of d-wave pairing interaction decrease with decreasing $T_c$ suggesting a strong correlation between these quantities.
The ferromagnetism of the checkerboard lattice Hubbard model at quarter filling is one of the few exact ferromagnetic ground states known in the family of Hubbard models. When the nearest neighbor hopping, t1, is negligible compared with the second neighbor one, t2, the system reduces to a collection of Hubbard chains. We find that the 1D character is surprisingly robust as long as t1 < t2. This phenomenon of dimensional reduction due to the geometrical frustration leads to peculiar magnetic orders with 1D character for intermediate U and is responsible for odd-frequency superconducting states…
The question of whether spatially inhomogeneous hopping in the two dimensional Hubbard model can lead to enhancement of superconductivity has been tackled by a number of authors in the context of the checkerboard Hubbard model (CHM). We address the effects of disorder on superconducting properties of the CHM by using exact diagonalization calculations for both potential and hopping disorder. We characterize the superconducting tendencies of the model by focusing on the pair binding energy, the spin gap, and d-wave pairing order parameter. We find that superconducting tendencies, particularly t…
We study signatures of superconductivity in a 2--leg "checkerboard" Hubbard ladder model, defined as a one--dimensional (period 2) array of square plaquettes with an intra-plaquette hopping $t$ and inter-plaquette hopping $t'$, using the density matrix renormalization group method. The highest pairing scale (characterized by the spin gap or the pair binding energy, extrapolated to the thermodynamic limit) is found for doping levels close to half filling, $U\approx 6t$ and $t'/t \approx 0.6$. Other forms of modulated hopping parameters, with periods of either 1 or 3 lattice constants, are also …
It has been argued that inhomogeneity generally can enhance superconductivity in the cuprate high-Tc materials. To check the validity of this claim, we study d-wave superconductivity on the checkerboard Hubbard model on a square lattice using the Cellular Dynamical Mean Field theory method with an exact diagonalization solver at zero temperature. The d-wave order parameter is computed for various inhomogeneity levels over the entire doping range of interest in both strong and weak coupling regimes. At a given doping, the size of the d-wave order parameter manifests itself directly in the heigh…
We present a controlled perturbative approach to the low temperature phase diagram of highly inhomogeneous Hubbard models in the limit of small coupling, $t'$, between clusters. We apply this to the dimerized and checkerboard models. The dimerized model is found to behave like a doped semiconductor, with a Fermi-liquid groundstate with parameters ({\it e.g.} the effective mass) which are smooth functions of the Hubbard interaction, $U$. By contrast, the checkerboard model has a nodeless d-wave superconducting state (preformed pair condensate, $d$-BEC) for $0 < U < U_c$, which smoothly crosses …
We use a renormalized mean field theory to study the Gutzwiller projected BCS states of the extended Hubbard model in the large $U$ limit, or the $t$-$t'$-$J$-$J'$ model on a two-dimensional checkerboard lattice. At small $t'/t$, the frustration due to the diagonal terms of $t'$ and $J'$ does not alter the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave pairing symmetry, and the negative (positive) $t'/t$ enhances (suppresses) the pairing order parameter. At large $t'/t$, the ground state has an extended s-wave symmetry. At the intermediate $t'/t$, the ground state is $d+id$ or $d+is$-wave with time reversal symmetry brok…
We study the effect of buckling and breathing phonons, relevant for cuprate superconductors, on the d-wave superconductivity in the two-dimensional Hubbard model by employing dynamical cluster Monte Carlo calculations. The interplay of electronic correlations and the electron-phonon interaction produces two competing effects, an enhancement of the effective d-wave pairing interaction, which favors d-wave superconductivity, and a strong renormalization of the single-particle propagator, which suppress superconductivity. Due to the later effect we find that buckling and breathing phonons suppres…
We report the results of exact diagonalization studies of Hubbard models on a $4\times 4$ square lattice with periodic boundary conditions and various degrees and patterns of inhomogeneity, which are represented by inequivalent hopping integrals $t$ and $t^{\prime}$. We focus primarily on two patterns, the checkerboard and the striped cases, for a large range of values of the on-site repulsion $U$ and doped hole concentration, $x$. We present evidence that superconductivity is strongest for $U$ of order the bandwidth, and intermediate inhomogeneity, $0 <t^\prime< t$. The maximum value of the `…
The two dimensional square lattice hard-core boson Hubbard model with near neighbor interactions has a `checkerboard' charge density wave insulating phase at half-filling and sufficiently large intersite repulsion. When doped, rather than forming a supersolid phase in which long range charge density wave correlations coexist with a condensation of superfluid defects, the system instead phase separates. However, it is known that there are other lattice geometries and interaction patterns for which such coexistence takes place. In this paper we explore the possibility that anisotropic hopping or…
The orbital degrees of freedom are of vital importance in explanation of various phenomena. Among them is the orbital-selective Mott transition (OSMT), which is thought to occur in several materials as Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$RuO$_4$ and La$_{n+1}$Ni${_n}$O$_{3n+1}$. OSMT is usually studied in the infinite-dimension limit, and for the time being, it is not clear if it could survive in one-dimensional (1D) case. There exist two scenarios for the OSMT: upon increasing the interaction in a two-band system i) one of the bands becomes insulating, while the other remains metallic and ii) one of the bands be…
We implement the contractor-renormalization method to study the checkerboard Hubbard model on various finite-size clusters as function of the inter-plaquette hopping t' and the on-site repulsion U at low hole doping. We find that the pair-binding energy and the spin gap exhibit a pronounced maximum at intermediate values of t' and U, thus indicating that moderate inhomogeneity of the type considered here substantially enhances the formation of hole pairs. The rise of the pair-binding energy for t'<t'_max is kinetic-energy driven and reflects the strong resonating valence bond correlations in t…
Extensive numerical studies have demonstrated that the two-dimensional single-band Hubbard model contains much of the key physics in cuprate high-temperature superconductors. However, there is no definitive proof that the Hubbard model truly possesses a superconducting ground state or, if it does, of how it depends on model parameters. To answer these longstanding questions, we study an extension of the Hubbard model including an infinite-range d-wave pair field term, which precipitates a superconducting state in the d-wave channel. Using exact diagonalization on 16-site square clusters, we st…
Previous studies have shown that bipartite Hubbard systems with inhomogeneous hopping amplitudes can exhibit higher pair-binding energies than the uniform model. Here we examine whether this result holds for systems with a more generic band structure. To this end, we use exact diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group method to study the 4x4 Hubbard cluster and the two-leg Hubbard ladder with checkerboard-modulated nearest-neighbor hopping, t, and next-nearest-neighbor (diagonal) hopping, t_d. We find that the strongest pairing continues to occur at an intermediate level of …
Inhomogeneous s-wave superconductivity is studied in the two-dimensional, square lattice attractive Hubbard Hamiltonian using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) mean field approximation. We find that at weak coupling, and for densities mainly below half-filling, an inhomogeneous interaction in which the on-site interaction $U_i$ takes on two values, $U_i=0, 2U$ results in a larger zero temperature pairing amplitude, and that the superconducting $T_c$ can also be significantly increased, relative to a uniform system with $U_i=U$ on all sites. These effects are observed for stripe, checkerboard, and…
We suppose that the doping of the 2D hard-core boson system away from half-filling may result in the formation of multi-center topological inhomogeneity (defect) such as charge order (CO) bubble domain(s) with Bose superfluid (BS) and extra bosons both localized in domain wall(s), or a {\it topological} CO+BS {\it phase separation}, rather than an uniform mixed CO+BS supersolid phase. Starting from the classical model we predict the properties of the respective quantum system. The long-wavelength behavior of the system is believed to remind that of granular superconductors, CDW materials, Wign…
The density of states of the organic superconductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br, measured by scanning tunneling spectroscopy on \textit{in-situ} cleaved surfaces, reveals a logarithmic suppression near the Fermi edge persisting above the critical temperature $T_\mathrm{c}$. A soft Hubbard gap as predicted by the Anderson-Hubbard model for systems with disorder exactly describes the experimentally observed suppression. The electronic disorder also explains the diminished coherence peaks of the quasiparticle density of states below $T_\mathrm{c}$.
We use two Quantum Monte Carlo algorithms to map out the phase diagram of the two-dimensional hardcore boson Hubbard model with near ($V_1$) and next near ($V_2$) neighbor repulsion. At half filling we find three phases: Superfluid (SF), checkerboard solid and striped solid depending on the relative values of $V_1$, $V_2$ and the kinetic energy. Doping away from half filling, the checkerboard solid undergoes phase separation: The superfluid and solid phases co-exist but not as a single thermodynamic phase. As a function of doping, the transition from the checkerboard solid is therefore first o…
The paper examines part of the ground state diagram of the extended Hubbard model, with the on-site attraction U<0 and intersite repulsion W>0 in the presence of charge density waves, superconducting and $η$-superconducting order parameters. We show the possibility of the stabilization of the mixed state, with all three nonzero order parameters, in the model with nearest neighbor interactions. The other result of the paper is application of the exact solution of the Schrodinger equation for the two electron bound state, as an additional bound for the phase diagram of the model, resulting in th…
Using dynamic cluster quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we study the superconducting behavior of a 1/8 doped two-dimensional Hubbard model with imposed uni-directional stripe-like charge density wave modulation. We find a significant increase of the pairing correlations and critical temperature relative to the homogeneous system when the modulation length-scale is sufficiently large. With a separable form of the irreducible particle-particle vertex, we show that optimized superconductivity is obtained for moderate modulation strength due to a delicate balance between the modulation enhanced pai…
The resistivity anisotropy unveiled in the study of detwinned single crystals of the undoped 122 pnictides is here studied using the two-dimensional three-orbital Hubbard model in the mean-field approximation. Calculating the Drude weight in the x and y directions at zero temperature for a Q=(π,0) magnetically ordered state, the conductance along the antiferromagnetic direction is shown to be larger than along the ferromagnetic direction. This effect is caused by the suppression of the d_{yz} orbital at the Fermi surface, but additional insight based on the momentum dependence of the transitio…
We study the effect of long-range hoppings on Tc for the two-dimensional (2D) Hubbard model with and without Holstein phonons using parameters evaluated from band-structure calculations for cuprates. Employing the dynamical cluster approximation (DCA) with a quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) cluster solver for a 4-site cluster, we observe that without phonons, the long-range hoppings, t' and t'', generally suppress Tc. We argue that this trend remains valid for larger clusters. In the presence of the Holstein phonons, a finite t' enhances Tc in the under-doped region for the hole-doped system, consist…
We study superconductivity in two-band models where one of the bands does or does not intersect the Fermi level depending on the parameter values. Applying a many-variable variational Monte-Carlo method for a Hubbard model on two-leg ladder and bilayer square lattices, we show that superconductivity can be enhanced in a parameter regime where the edge of one of the bands is near the Fermi energy, that is, when the band is incipient. The resemblence of the present results to those obtained by a weak coupling method in a recent study suggests that, even in the large $U$ regime, the suppression o…
In order to discuss superconductivity in orbital degenerate systems, a microscopic Hamiltonian is introduced. Based on the degenerate model, a strong-coupling theory of superconductivity is developed within the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approximation where spin and orbital fluctuations, spectra of electron, and superconducting gap function are self-consistently determined. Applying the FLEX approximation to the orbital degenerate model, it is shown that the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconducting phase is induced by increasing the orbital splitting energy which leads to the development and suppre…
Recently, ultra-small-diameter Single Wall Nano Tubes with diameter of $ \sim 0.4 nm$ have been produced and many unusual properties were observed, such as superconductivity, leading to a transition temperature $T_c\sim 15^oK$, much larger than that observed in the bundles of larger diameter tubes. By a comparison between two different approaches, we discuss the issue whether a superconducting behavior in these carbon nanotubes can arise by a purely electronic mechanism. The first approach is based on the Luttinger Model while the second one, which emphasizes the role of the lattice and short …
Using the Constrained Path Monte Carlo (CPMC) method, we simulated the two-dimensional, three-band Hubbard model to study pairing, charge, and spin correlations as a function of electron and hole doping and the Coulomb repulsion $V_{pd}$ between charges on neighboring Cu and O lattice sites. As a function of distance, both the $d_{x^2 - y^2}$-wave and extended s-wave pairing correlations decayed quickly. In the charge-transfer regime, increasing $V_{pd}$ decreased the long-range part of the correlation functions in both channels, while in the mixed-valent regime, it increased the long-range pa…
We investigate magnetic and superconducting instabilities of the two-dimensional t-t' Hubbard model on a square lattice at Van Hove densities from weak to intermediate coupling by means of the two-particle self-consistent approach. We find that as the next-nearest-neighbor hopping |t'| increases from zero, the leading instability is towards an incommensurate spin-density wave whose wave vector moves slowly away from (pi, pi). For intermediate values of |t'|, the leading instability is towards d_{x2-y2}-wave superconductivity. For larger |t'|>0.33t, there are signs of a crossover to ferromagnet…
We present a formulation of the Constrained Path Monte Carlo (CPMC) method for fermions that uses trial wave-functions that include many-body effects. This new formulation allows us to implement a whole family of generalized mean-field states as constraints. As an example, we calculated superconducting pairing correlation functions for the two-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model using a BCS trial state as the constraint. We compared the results with the case where a free-electron trial wave-function is used. We found that the correlation functions are independent of which state is used as the …
The spatial variations of the order parameter, and the local density of states (LDOS) on the corner of s-wave or $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductors, as well as in superconductor-insulator-normal metal interfaces, are calculated self consistently using the Bogoliubov-deGennes formalism within the two dimensional extended Hubbard model. The exact diagonalization method is used. Due to the suppression of the dominant d-wave order parameter, the extended s-wave order parameter is induced near the surface, that alternates its sign for the topmost sites at adjacent edges of the lattice and decays to…
We study s-wave superconductivity in the two-dimensional square lattice attractive Hubbard Hamiltonian for various inhomogeneous patterns of interacting sites. Using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) mean field approximation, we obtain the phase diagram for inhomogeneous patterns in which the on-site attractive interaction U_i between the electrons takes on two values, U_i=0 and -U/(1-f) (with f the concentration of non-interacting sites) as a function of average electron occupation per site n, and study the evolution of the phase diagram as f varies. In certain regions of the phase diagram, inho…
We investigate parity-mixing superconductivity in the two-dimensional Hubbard model with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, using Cellular Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (CDMFT). A superconducting state with mixed singlet $d$-wave and triplet $p$-wave character is found in a wide range of doping. The singlet component decreases with the amplitude of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling, whereas the triplet component increases, but both disappear at about 20\% doping. The effect of a Zeeman field is also investigated; it tends to suppress both types of superconductivity, but induces nontrivial topological prop…
For two-dimensional single-valley quadratic band crossing systems with weak repulsive electron-electron interactions, we show that upon introducing a chemical potential, particle-hole order is suppressed and superconductivity becomes the leading instability. In contrast to the two-valley case realized in bilayer graphene, the single-valley quadratic band touching is protected by crystal symmetries, and the different symmetries and number of fermion flavors can lead to distinct phase instabilities. Our results are obtained using a weak-coupling Wilsonian renormalization group procedure on a low…
